RESUMO

Increasing water pollution due to anthropogenic activities prompts the quest for an effective water treatment method. Polymeric materials have gained attention as adsorbents for water purification. Membranes are majorly made from homopolymeric materials. However, recent studies have focused on using copolymeric materials for improved performance. In this review, the basics of copolymerization including various types of copolymers, synthetic approaches, and their applications in various water pollutants removal are discussed in detail. Advances in water treatment technology using copolymeric materials as adsorbent/membranes in the last 4 years are covered with insights into the future outlook and areas of improvement in terms of copolymer composites for water treatment. Studies from the literature did not only reveal effectiveness of copolymer as a flocculant/antifouling materials and in removal of selective toxic metals, oil, and microbes but also demonstrated recyclability of the copolymer sorbents/membrane. Full exploration of unique copolymer textural and structural properties could lead to great advancement in water treatment process. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The copolymer types and synthetic methods are discussed. Application of copolymer as adsorbent/membranes for water treatment is presented. Recent advances show good pollutants removal for toxic metals, oil, and organics. Copolymer composites have great potential as adsorbent/membranes for future use in water treatment processes.

RESUMO

This study employs response surface methodology and a central composite design (CCD) to optimize hydrothermal treatment (HTT) conditions for the valorization of food waste (FW). Lab-scale pressure reactor-based HTT processes are investigated to detect the effects of temperature (220-340 °C) and resident time (90-260 min) on elemental composition and fatty acid recovery in the hydrothermal liquid. Central to the study is the identification of temperature as the primary factor influencing food waste conversion during the HTT process, showcasing its impact on HTT product yields. The liquid fraction, rich in saturated fatty acids (SFA), demonstrates a temperature-dependent trend, with higher temperatures favoring SFA recovery. Specifically, HTT at 340 °C in 180 min exhibits the highest SFA percentages, reaching up to 52.5 wt%. The study establishes HTT as a promising avenue for nutrient recovery, with the liquid fraction yielding approximately 95% at optimized conditions. Furthermore, statistical analysis using response surface methodology predicts the optimal achievable yields for hydrochar and hydrothermal liquid at 6.15% and 93.85%, respectively, obtained at 320 °C for 200 min.

RESUMO

Pyrolysis and related thermal conversion processes have shown increased research momentum in recent decades. Understanding the underlying thermal conversion process principles alongside the associated/exhibited operational challenges that are specific to biomass types is crucial for beginners in this research area. From an extensive literature search, the authors are convinced that a tutorial review that guides beginners particularly towards pyrolysis implementation, from different biomasses to the thermal conversion process and conditions, is scarce. An effective understanding of pre-to-main pyrolysis stages, alongside corresponding standard methodologies, would help beginners discuss anticipated results. To support the existing information, therefore, this review sought to seek how to navigate pyrolysis implementation, specifically considering factors and thermochemical operating methods for biomass conversion, drawing the ideas from: (a) the evolving nature of the thermal conversion process; (b) the potential inter-relatedness between individual components affecting pyrolysis-based research; (c) pre- to post-pyrolysis' engagement strategies; (d) potential feedstock employed in the thermal conversion processes; (e) the major pre-treatment strategies applied to feedstocks; (f) system performance considerations between pyrolysis reactors; and (g) differentiating between the reactor and operation parameters involved in the thermal conversion processes. Moreover, pre-pyrolysis activity tackles biomass selection/analytical measurements, whereas the main pyrolysis activity tackles treatment methods, reactor types, operating processes, and the eventual product output. Other areas that need beginners' attention include high-pressure process reactor design strategies and material types that have a greater potential for biomass.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: TMJ OA is characterized by severe osteocartilaginous degradation of the joint structure resulting in severe deterioration of both joint function as well as joint structure. bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) gained wide acceptance as an auspicious addition for regenerative medicine as it is confirmed to be a rich source of pluripotent mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors that produce promising relief of clinical symptoms with significant repair of the joint structure. Thus, the study aims at assessing the efficacy of bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) as a treatment modality for TMJ osteoarthritis and compare its efficacy with that of hyaluronic acid (HA). METHODS: 24 patients were included in the present study and divided into 12 patients in each group. Joint arthrocentesis was performed to all patients followed by intra-articular BMAC injection in Group I. While Group II received HA acid injection RESULTS: A trend towards long term joint repair at 12 and 18 months follow up period was observed in the bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) group as a therapeutic modality for TMJ OA by providing necessary growth factors and anti-inflammatories that impedes the progression of the osteoarthritic degeneration. On the contrary to the viscosupplementary action of hyaluronic acid (HA) that showed relapse of patients conditions. CONCLUSION: Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is able to reverse the degenerative effects of TMJ OA however, further studies are mandatory with larger population and longer follow-up time.

RESUMO

Present research work represents antiviral and antibacterial value of body fat of Saara hardwickii commonly called as spiny tailed lizard. Oil was extracted from body fats located in the ventral region of this animal using hydrocarbons e.g., n-hexane, methanol, butanol and ethyl acetate as a solvent. The antibacterial activity of lizard oil was tested against standard as well as multi-resistant lines ofEscherichia coli, Styphalococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris alone and with antibiotic ampicillin. For antibacterial potential, Ethyl acetate and Butanol solvent extract showed best zone of inhibition (7mm) with P. aeruginosa and S. aureus respectively. For antiviral potential, Butanol and Methanol extract showed best HA (Hemagglutination) titer of 04 with NDV and IBV viral strain respectively. It is concluded that lizard oil has antimicrobial potential against different pathogens strains (virus, bacteria).

RESUMO

Objectives: Recent molecular studies show that breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease, and several molecular changes may accumulate over time to influence treatment response. As a result, employing reliable molecular biomarkers to monitor these modifications may help deliver personalised treatment. However, this may be unrealistic in the resource-limited parts of the world. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of hormone receptors and p53 tumour suppressor using immunohistochemistry (IHC) in BC compared to the traditional tumour grade. Methods: In total, 205 cases were investigated, and the Modified Bloom-Richardson score system was adopted in grading the tumours. The tissue sections of the cases were stained with specific primary antibodies at dilutions of 1:60 for oestrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR), 1:350 for the human epidermal growth factor (HER-2/neu) and 1:50 for p53. Results: Invasive ductal carcinoma of no-specific type (n = 190, 92.7%) was predominant and grade II tumour (n = 146, 71.2%) was the most frequent. Hormone receptors ER (n = 127) and PR (n = 145) had 62.0% and 70.7% positive cases, respectively; 34.1% (n = 70) were positive for HER-2/neu, while 76.1% (n = 156) were positive for p53. Significant associations between Nottingham grade and expression patterns of ER (P <0.01), PR (P <0.001), HER-2/neu (P <0.001) and p53 (P = 0.001) were observed. Conclusion: Nottingham grade had a high degree of concordance with the patterns of expression of hormone receptors, HER-2/neu and p53, suggesting that it may play an important role in connection with the predictive and prognostic biomarkers for BC.

RESUMO

CDK2 is a key player in cell cycle processes. It has a crucial role in the progression of various cancers. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) are two common cancers that affect humans worldwide. The available therapeutic options suffer from many drawbacks including high toxicity and decreased specificity. Therefore, there is a need for more effective and safer therapeutic agents. A series of new pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine analogs was designed, synthesized, and evaluated as anticancer agents against the CRC and HCC cells, HCT116, and HepG2, respectively. Pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidinone derivatives bearing N5-2-(4-halophenyl) acetamide substituents were identified as the most potent amongst evaluated compounds. Further evaluation of CDK2 kinase inhibition of two potential cytotoxic compounds 4a and 4b confirmed their CDK2 inhibitory activity. Compound 4a was more potent than the reference roscovitine regarding the CDK2 inhibitory activity (IC50 values: 0.21 and 0.25 µM, respectively). In silico molecular docking provided insights into the molecular interactions of compounds 4a and 4b with important amino acids within the ATP-binding site of CDK2 (Ile10, Leu83, and Leu134). Overall, compounds 4a and 4b were identified as interesting CDK2 inhibitors eliciting antiproliferative activity against the CRC and HCC cells, HCT116 and HepG2, respectively, for future further investigations and development.

RESUMO

In this paper, a new carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNTFET)-based second-order fully differential all-pass filter circuit is presented. The realized filter uses CNTFET-based transconductors and grounded capacitors. An active-only second-order fully differential all-pass filter circuit topology is also presented by replacing the grounded capacitance with a CNTFET-based varactor to achieve filter tunability. By controlling the varactor capacitance, active-only second-order fully differential all-pass filter tunability in the range of 15 GHz to 27.5 GHz is achieved. The proposed active-only circuit works on -oltage, low-power dissipation and high tunable pole frequency. The realized circuit operations are verified through the HPSPICE simulation tool. Deng's CNTFET model is utilized to verify the filter performances at the 16 nm technology node. It is seen that the proposed filter simulation justifies the theoretical predictions and works efficiently in the deep-submicron technology.

RESUMO

The process of anaerobic digestion used for methane production can be enhanced by dosing various additive materials. The effects of these materials are dependent on various factors, including the processed substrate, process conditions, and the type and amount of the additive material. As part of the study, three different materials-iron powder, lime, and milled porous ceramic-were added to the 30-day anaerobic digestion of the brewer's spent grain to improve its performance. Different doses ranging from 0.2 to 2.3 gTS × L-1 were tested, and methane production kinetics were determined using the first-order model. The results showed that the methane yield ranged from 281.4 ± 8.0 to 326.1 ± 9.3 mL × gVS-1, while substrate biodegradation ranged from 56.0 ± 1.6 to 68.1 ± 0.7%. The addition of lime reduced the methane yield at almost all doses by -6.7% to -3.3%, while the addition of iron powder increased the methane yield from 0.8% to 9.8%. The addition of ceramic powder resulted in a methane yield change ranging from -2.6% to 4.6%. These findings suggest that the use of additive materials should be approached with caution, as even slight changes in the amount used can impact methane production.

RESUMO

Nitrite has been linked to a variety of health issues, as well as cancer and oxygen deficiency when its allowable limit is exceeded. Nitrite monitoring and detection are required due to the negative effects on public health. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based nanomaterials/composites have recently been shown to have the potential for various biological and medical applications like sensing, imaging, and drug delivery. As a result, this research creates an efficient electrochemical sensor by incorporating MOFs into polyaniline (PANI)/carbon nanotube (CNT) cast on the GCE. In situ oxidative polymerization was used to construct an aluminum succinate MOF (Al-Succin)-incorporated CNT/PANI nanocomposite (PANI/CNT@Al-Succin) and well characterized by various characterization techniques, namely, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and four probes to measure DC electrical conductivity. Cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry techniques were employed to detect nitrite on the surface of PANI/CNT@Al-Succin-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). PANI/CNT@Al-Succin-modified GCE demonstrated good current response and electrocatalytic property towards nitrite compared to bare GCE. The newly synthesized electrode exhibited a high electrocatalytic activity towards nitrite oxidation and showed a linear response ranging from 5.7 to 74.1 µM for CV and 8.55-92.62 µM for LSV. The obtained LOD values for CV (1.16 µM) and LSV (0.08 µM) were significantly below the WHO-defined acceptable nitrite limit in drinking water. Results of recovery studies for real samples of apple juice, orange juice, and bottled water were 98.92%, 99.38%, and 99.90%, respectively. These values show practical usability of PANI/CNT@Al-Succin in real samples.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To date, there are over 320 variants identified in the IRF6 gene that cause Van der Woude syndrome or popliteal pterygium syndrome. We sequenced this gene in a South African orofacial cleft cohort to identify the causal IRF6 variants in our population. METHOD: Saliva samples from 100 patients with syndromic and non-syndromic CL ± P were collected. Patients were recruited from the cleft clinics at two public, tertiary hospitals in Durban, South Africa (SA), namely Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) and KwaZulu-Natal Children's Hospital (KZNCH). We prospectively sequenced the exons of IRF6 in 100 orofacial cleft cases, and where possible, we also sequenced the parents of the individuals to determine the segregation pattern. RESULTS: Two variants were identified; one novel (p.Cys114Tyr) and one known (p.Arg84His) missense variant in IRF6 gene were identified. The patient with the p.Cys114Tyr variant was non-syndromic with no clinical VWS phenotype expected of individuals with IRF6 coding variants, and the patient with the p.Arg84His had phenotypic features of popliteal pterygium syndrome. The p.Arg84His variant segregated in the family, with the father also being affected. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that IRF6 variants are found in the South African population. Genetic counselling is essential for affected families, particularly in the absence of a known clinical phenotype since it helps with the plans for future pregnancies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Masked hypertension (HTN), especially, isolated nocturnal HTN (INH) has been shown to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) but is not studied well in pediatric heart transplant (PHT) patients. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is known to identify patients with HTN but is not used routinely in PHT. METHODS: A single-center, prospective, cross-sectional study of PHT recipients was performed to observe the incidence of masked HTN using 24-h ABPM. The relationship between ABPM parameters and clinical variables was assessed using Spearman correlation coefficient. p value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: ABPM was performed in 34 patients, mean age 14 ± 5 years, median 5.5 years post-PHT. All patients had normal cardiac function, left ventricular mass index and blood pressure measurements in the clinic. Four patients had known prior HTN and on medications, one of them was uncontrolled. Of the remaining 30 patients, 18 new patients were diagnosed with masked HTN, of which 14 had INH. Diurnal variation was abnormal in 82% (28/34) patients. 24-h diastolic blood pressure (DBP) index correlated with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) (r = - 0.44, p = 0.01). There was no correlation between other ABPM parameters with tacrolimus trough levels. CONCLUSIONS: ABPM identified masked HTN in 60% of patients, with majority being INH. Abnormal circadian BP patterns were present in 82% and an association was found between GFR and DBP parameters. HTN, especially INH, is under-recognized in PHT recipients and ABPM has a role in their long-term care.

RESUMO

The present study describes the haematological profile, feeding preference, and comparison of morphometric characters of blue rock pigeon (Columba livia) breeding pairs. For this purpose, 25 pairs (25 samples per sex) were sampled through Mist nets from district Okara and Bahawalnagar, Punjab, Pakistan. Birds were then anaesthetized with a combination of ketamine HCL (10 mg/kg) and diazepam (0.2 mg/kg) and subjected to morphometric measurements. 5µL blood also was taken from the jugular vein of each anaesthetized bird for haematological analysis. Few pairs were also dissected to remove gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) for food preferences. Results revealed that there are no significant differences in the haematological parameters and feeding preference of breeding pairs of Columba livia. The gut analysis further revealed, the major portion of gut contents consisted of pea and corn in most of the pairs. Regarding the mensural measurements, significant differences were recorded in the body weight, length of the longest primary feather, and chest circumference, whereas the rest of the studied parameters remain nonsignificant between sexes. So, it is concluded that apart from 3 morphometric parameters (body weight, length of longest primary feather and chest circumference), both sexes are alike in term of morphometry, haematology and food preference.

Background: Heart failure is now a significant contributor to the burden of non-communicable diseases in developing countries like Nigeria which is experiencing epidemiologic and demographic transition. The epidemiology of heart failure in this country is poorly characterized. The aim of the review is to determine the prevalence of heart failure, the associated risk factors, the aetiology, management, and outcomes of the condition in the country. Methods: Relevant databases such as PubMed /Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, African Index Medicus, and African journal online would be searched for articles published in English from January 2000 to December 2021. The analysis will include observational studies conducted among Nigerian adults aged 12 years and above. Article selection shall be conducted by pairs of independent reviewers. Data extraction shall be done by 2 independent reviewers. Results: The primary outcome would be the pooled prevalence of heart failure while the secondary outcomes would be to identify the risk factors and management of heart failure in Nigeria. Conclusion: This will be the first systematic review and meta-analysis of heart failure epidemiology in Nigeria which will hopefully identify gaps for future research and guidance for policy interventions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To detect cathelicidin levels in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) as a potential marker for diabetic vascular complications and to assess its relation to diastolic dysfunction as an index for subclinical macrovasculopathy. METHODS: Totally, 84 patients with T1D were categorized into three groups; newly diagnosed diabetes group (28 patients with a mean age of 12.38 ± 1.99) years, T1D without microvascular complications group (28 patients with a mean age of 13.04 ± 2.27), and T1D with microvascular complications group (28 patients with a mean age of 13.96 ± 2.30). Patients were evaluated using serum cathelicidin levels and echocardiography. RESULTS: Total cholesterol, microalbuminuria, and cathelicidin levels were significantly higher in patients with microvascular complications when compared to the other two groups (p<0.001). Additionally, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) echocardiography values and diastolic functions were significantly higher in patients with complications (p<0.001). Cathelicidin was positively correlated to the duration of diabetes (r=0.542, p<0.001), total cholesterol (r=0.346, p=0.001), recurrence of hypoglycemia (r=0.351, p=0.001), recurrence of diabetes ketoacidosis (r=0.365, p=0.001), CIMT (r=0.544, p<0.001), and E/A values (r=0.405, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Serum cathelicidin levels can be used as an early marker for the occurrence and progression of vascular complications in patients with T1D.

RESUMO

Economic development and population growth lead to the increased production of chicken manure, which is a problematic organic waste in terms of its amount, environmental threats, and moisture content. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization, an emerging way of waste disposal, was performed on chicken manure to produce an energy-rich material called hydrochar. The effects of hydrothermal carbonization temperature (180, 240, 300 °C) and process time (30, 90, 180 min) were summarized. Proximate and ultimate analysis, as well as low and high heating values were applied both on raw material and derived hydrochars. Additionally, the performance of the process was examined. The obtained results show that hydrothermal carbonization is a feasible method for chicken manure disposal and valorization. Although the process time did not influence the fuel properties of chicken manure considerably, a higher temperature led to a significantly higher heating value, reaching 23,880.67 ± 34.56 J × g-1 at 300 °C and 180 min with an improvement of ~8329 J × g-1 compared with raw chicken manure (15,551.67 J × g-1). Considering the energy gain value, the hydrochar derived at 240 °C in 30 min had the best result. Moreover, the energy consumption for this process was relatively low (124.34 ± 8.29 kJ × g-1). With its still feasible fuel properties and high heating value of 20,267.00 ± 617.83 kJ × g-1, it was concluded that these parameters of chicken manure hydrochar are the most beneficial and present a potential alternative for conventional fuel.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed invasive non-skin malignancy in women worldwide, and it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in them. Nigella sativa Linn. seed oil has been found to be effective in cancer treatment as well as having anti-cancer properties in some other types of cancers. The study looked into the synergistic cytotoxic effects of N. sativa Linn. seed oil and doxorubicin in the treatment of human breast cancer cells (MCF-7). METHODS: Nigella sativa Linn. seed oil was used to evaluate its effect on human breast cancer cells, either alone or in conjunction with doxorubicin. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) tests were used to examine cell proliferation and cell viability, while phase-contrast inverted microscopy was used to examine cellular morphology. Furthermore, the role of N. sativa seed oil in decreasing cell tumorigenicity features was highlighted by testing the cancer cell migration using the wound healing assay. RESULTS: Results showed that higher concentrations (50 µg/mL) of N. sativa Linn. seed oil changed the breast cancer cell morphology and decreased the cell proliferation and viability. Breast cancer cells treated with black seed oil decreased cell movement after 24 hours compared to the untreated cell in the wound healing assay. Whereas, only the higher concentration of doxorubicin (0.5-2.5 µg/mL) reduced cell proliferation and cell viability. Moreover, the combination treatment of 50 µg/mL of black seed oil with different concentrations of doxorubicin caused a significant cell proliferation reduction and decreased cell viability. The activity was seen optimum at lower concentration (0.1 µg/mL) of doxorubicin. CONCLUSIONS: There was decreased cell proliferation and cell viability when N. sativa seed oil was used alone or in conjunction with doxorubicin in Breast cancer cells (MCF-7) revealing potential opportunities in the field of cancer treatment.
