RESUMO

Flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG), a solid waste produced during sulfur removal in coal-fired power plants, has applications in saline-alkali soil amelioration due to its function of calciumsodium ion exchange. Existing research has focused on the use of gypsum to improve saline-alkali soils in non-coastal areas. However, coastal areas are not only extensively salinized, but an important source of methane, and surprisingly, FGDG may assist to decrease methane formation mainly by the action of sulfate radical. This is the first critical review to systematically discuss the effects of FGDG on both saline-alkali soil improvement and carbon emission control in tidal flats, including application status, amendment principles, environmental risks and methane emission control. After adding FGDG, soil salinization degree was weakened via adjusting soil structure, pH, exchangeable sodium percentage and electric conductivity, introduction of nutrients also promotes crop growth. The optimal FGDG dosage in tidal flats seems to be higher (>2 %) than that in non-coastal areas (<1 %). Its environmental risks regarding heavy metals and eutrophication are evaluated safe. In tidal areas, more methane is produced in hot seasons and ebb tides. Plants and invertebrates also promote methane release. FGDG controls methane production by promoting the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria and inhibiting methanogens. Considering methane flux levels and seawater erosion, FGDG use in low tidal beach needs more research, while that in high and middle tidal beach is recommended. This review will expand applications and appropriate use of FGDG for reducing carbon emission and improving ecological services in coastal areas.

RESUMO

The interception of rivers leads to the accumulation of substantial organic matter in reservoirs, exerting a significant influence on greenhouse gas emissions. The diverse imported organic matter, coupled with sedimentary heterogeneity and intricate microbial processes, gives rise to seasonal variations in methane emissions from reservoirs. In this study, sediment cores were supplemented with terrestrial or autochthonous carbon to emulate reservoir carbon input across different seasons, thereby investigating methane emission potential and associated microbial mechanisms within the sediment cores. Results demonstrated that autochthonous organic matter enhanced sediment organic content, thereby providing more substrates for the methanogenic process and fostering the proliferation of methanogens (with a relative abundance of 47.17 % to 60.66 %). Notably, the dominant genera of Methanosaeta, Methanosarcina, and Candidatus Methanomethylicus were boost on the surface layer of sediment. Concurrently, the introduction of autochthonous organic carbon spurred an increase in methane-oxidizing microbe, reaching up to 5.59 %, with Methylobacter and Candidatus Methanoperedens as the predominant species, which led to a downward migration of the functional microbial group in the sediment. Under the priming impact of autochthonous carbon, however, the methane oxidation probably doesn't consume the substantial methane produced in sediment. Consequently, the sediment functions as a hotspot for methane release into the overlying water, highlighting the necessity to include summer as critical periods for integrated assessments, particularly during algae bloom.

RESUMO

Emerging research suggests a potential association of progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with alterations in synaptic currents and mitochondrial dynamics. However, the specific associations between these pathological changes remain unclear. In this study, we utilized Aß42-induced AD rats and primary neural cells as in vivo and in vitro models. The investigations included behavioural tests, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis, Nissl staining, thioflavin-S staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Golgi-Cox staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), immunofluorescence staining, proteomics, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assessment, mitochondrial morphology analysis, electrophysiological studies, Western blotting, and molecular docking. The results revealed changes in synaptic currents, mitophagy, and mitochondrial dynamics in the AD models. Remarkably, intervention with Dengzhan Shengmai (DZSM) capsules emerged as a pivotal element in this investigation. Aß42-induced synaptic dysfunction was significantly mitigated by DZSM intervention, which notably amplified the frequency and amplitude of synaptic transmission. The cognitive impairment observed in AD rats was ameliorated and accompanied by robust protection against structural damage in key brain regions, including the hippocampal CA3, primary cingular cortex, prelimbic system, and dysgranular insular cortex. DZSM intervention led to increased IDE levels, augmented long-term potential (LTP) amplitude, and enhanced dendritic spine density and length. Moreover, DZSM intervention led to favourable changes in mitochondrial parameters, including ROS expression, MMP and ATP contents, and mitochondrial morphology. In conclusion, our findings delved into the realm of altered synaptic currents, mitophagy, and mitochondrial dynamics in AD, concurrently highlighting the therapeutic potential of DZSM intervention.

RESUMO

Significant amounts of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) are released into the atmosphere worldwide via freshwater sources. The surface methane maximum (SMM), where methane is supersaturated in surface water, has been observed in aquatic systems and contributes significantly to emissions. However, little is known about the temporal and spatial variability of SMM or the mechanisms underlying its development in artificial reservoirs. Here, the community composition of methanogens as major methane producers in the water column and the mcrA gene was investigated, and the cause of surface methane supersaturation was analyzed. In accordance with the findings, elevated methane concentration of SMM in the transition zone, with an annually methane emission flux 2.47 times higher than the reservoir average on a large and deep reservoir. In the transition zone, methanogens with mcrA gene abundances ranging from 0.5 × 103-1.45 × 104 copies/L were found. Methanobacterium, Methanoseata and Methanosarcina were the three dominate methanogens, using both acetic acid and H2/CO2 pathways. In summary, this study contributes to our comprehension of CH4 fluxes and their role in the atmospheric methane budget. Moreover, it offers biological proof of methane generation, which could aid in understanding the role of microbial methanogenesis in aerobic water.

RESUMO

The Yellow River water-sediment regulation (WSR) is a unique hydraulic engineering project that involves the resuspension and rapid discharge of sediment downstream under the influence of density currents. This process leads to short-term high-intensity sediment scouring, which in turn increases the output of organic carbon. The impact of WSR on the biogeochemical cycling of organic carbon in rivers has not been adequately explored. In this study, we applied stable isotope and 3-D fluorescence analyses to investigate the impact of WSR at the Xiaolangdi (XLD) Reservoir on the sources and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) in the Yellow River. The POC and DOC fluxes during WSR (∼51 days) accounted for 95.5 % and 28.3 % of the annual fluxes. According to the Bayesian model used in the study, the fluxes of POC from sediment, terrestrial plants, and sewage increased by 23.2, 13.36, and 56.55 times, respectively, during the WSR period. On the other hand, the flux from various sources of DOC decreased by ∼0.7 times during the WSR process. The three-dimensional fluorescence index (specific UV absorbance [SUVA254], humification index [HIX], biological index [BIX], and fluorescence index [FI]) further reveals that in the WSR process, more DOC comes from sediment and upstream water. This study provides quantitative insights into the effects of WSR on river organic carbon export dynamics and the driving mechanisms behind them. It also has important implications for understanding the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on the global carbon cycle.

RESUMO

Dam construction as an important anthropogenic activity significantly influences ecological processes in altered freshwater bodies. However, the effects of multiple cascade dams on microbial communities have been largely overlooked. In this study, the spatiotemporal distribution, co-occurrence relationships, assembly mechanisms, and functional profiles of sedimentary bacterial communities were systematically investigated in 12 cascade reservoirs across two typical karst basins in southwest China over four seasons. A significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity was observed in bacterial abundance and diversity. Co-occurrence patterns in the Wujiang Basin exhibited greater edge counts, graph density, average degree, robustness, and reduced modularity, suggesting more intimate and stronger ecological interactions among species than in the Pearl River Basin. Furthermore, Armatimonadota and Desulfobacterota, identified as keystone species, occupied a more prominent niche than the dominant species. A notable distance-decay relationship between geographical distance and community dissimilarities was identified in the Pearl River Basin. Importantly, in the Wujiang Basin, water temperature emerged as the primary seasonal variable steering the deterministic process of bacterial communities, whereas 58.5% of the explained community variance in the neutral community model (NCM) indicated that stochastic processes governed community assembly in the Pearl River Basin. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) revealed more pronounced seasonal dynamics in nitrogen functional compositions than spatial variation in the Wujiang Basin. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results indicated that in the Wujiang Basin, environmental factors and in Pearl River Basin, geographical distance, reservoir age, and hydraulic retention time (HRT), respectively, influenced the abundance of nitrogen-related genes. Notably, these findings offer novel insights: building multiple cascade reservoirs could lead to a cascading decrease in biodiversity and resilience in the river-reservoir ecosystem.

RESUMO

Anthropogenic activity has caused rivers and reservoirs to become sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is thought to play an important role in global climate change. There are thermal and DO stratification in deep-water reservoirs with long hydraulic retention time, which change N2O production mechanism compared with shallow-water reservoirs. To promote our understanding of the relationship of N2O production in reservoirs at different depths, spatiotemporal variations in water environmental factors and N2O from cascade reservoirs of Chaishitan (CST), Longtan (LT), Yantan (YT) and Dahua (DH) reservoirs in the Zhujiang River were detected, and the LT and YT reservoirs were compared as representatives of deep-water and shallow-water reservoirs in April and July 2019. The average N2O concentrations in the LT and YT reservoirs were 22.82 ± 2.21 and 21.55 ± 1.65 nmol L-1, respectively. During spring and summer, the WT (water temperature) and DO (dissolved oxygen) concentrations in the YT reservoir were well mixed. In contrast, the LT reservoir, as a deep-water reservoir, had thermal and DO stratifications in both the shallow and middle water, especially in the summer when the solar radiation intensity was high. During summer stratification, the DO concentration in the LT reservoir showed obvious spatial variation, ranging from 1.23 to 9.84 mg L-1, while the DO concentration in the YT reservoir showed very little variation, ranging from 6.45 to 7.09 mg L-1. Structural equation modeling results showed that NH4+ was the main determinant of the N2O concentration in the YT reservoir, and DO was the most influential factor of the N2O concentration in the LT reservoir. These results suggest significant variations in the factors influencing N2O concentration among reservoirs. Additionally, the mechanisms of N2O production differ between deep-water and shallow-water reservoirs. This study highlights the spatio-temporal variations and influential factors contributing to N2O concentration. Furthermore, it discusses the production mechanisms of N2O in different types of reservoirs. These findings contribute to our understanding of N2O distribution in hydropower systems and provide valuable data for the management of hydropower facilities and research on greenhouse gas emissions.

RESUMO

Background: Avoidant attachment poses a serious risk to intimate relationships and offspring. However, there are few studies on the face-processing characteristics and impairments of avoidant individuals based on basic emotion theory. Therefore, this study investigated the issues of emotional processing and deactivation strategies in individuals with avoidant attachment. Methods: Avoidant and secure individuals were recruited to participate in an eye-tracking experiment and a two-choice oddball task in which they had to distinguish facial expressions of basic emotions (sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and neutral). Eye fixation durations to various parts of the face, including the eyes, nose, and mouth, were measured, and three event-related potentials (ERP) components (P100, N170, and P300) were monitored. Results: Avoidant individuals could not process facial expressions as easily as secure individuals. Avoidant individuals focused less on the eyes of angry faces when compared to secure individuals. They also exhibited a more positive P100 component and a less negative N170 component when processing faces and a larger amplitude of the P300 component than secure individuals when processing emotional expressions. Conclusion: Avoidant individuals use deactivating strategies and exhibit specific characteristics at different stages, which are of great significance in social interaction.

RESUMO

The phenomenon of subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer emerging at a certain water depth is commonly found in stratified water bodies. Also, it is a crucial contributing region to the primary productivity of the water column. Currently, there is a lack of concern about the occurrence of SCM phenomena in studies targeting inland water bodies such as natural lakes and artificial reservoirs. This led to a significant underestimation of the level of primary productivity in these water bodies and their trophic state. In this study, a subtropical reservoir (the Xinanjiang Reservoir, XAJR) was investigated, to understand the characteristics of SCM layer in deep-large reservoir and its contribution to the primary productivity of the water column. Water sampling were conducted from September 2020 to August 2021, and in September 2022. Buoy station data for this reservoir between 2019 and 2021 were also collected. Based on the detailed observations of the water column profile in riverine area (X1), transitional area (X2), and central area (X3 and X4) of this reservoir, it was found that there was an obvious SCM phenomenon, which was closely related to the characteristics of seasonal thermal stratification. The SCM layer of XAJR appeared at depth around 3-5 m underwater from May to August, and as the thermal stratification strength increased, so did the depth and thickness of the SCM layer. It was estimated that gross primary productivity of euphotic layer of XAJR ranged from 347.9 to 4508.6 mgC·m-2·d-1. The average primary productivity level of the SCM layer reached 1411.7mgC·m-2·d-1, accounting for about 40-90% of the gross primary productivity of euphotic layer. This study contributes to a better understanding of the factors influencing changes in the development of the SCM layer in large reservoirs, as well as its critical role in the inland water carbon cycle.

RESUMO

As an important step in image processing, image segmentation can be used to determine the accuracy of object counts, and area and contour data. In addition, image segmentation is indispensable in seed testing research. Due to the uneven grey level of the original image, traditional watershed algorithms generate many incorrect edges, resulting in oversegmentation and undersegmentation, which affects the accuracy of obtaining seed phenotype information. The DMR-watershed algorithm, an improved watershed algorithm based on distance map reconstruction, is proposed in this paper. According to the grey distribution characteristics of the image, the grey reduction amplitude h was selected to generate the mask image with the same grey distribution trend as that of the original image. The original greyscale map was reconstructed with corresponding thresholds selected according to the false minima of different regions that are to be segmented, which generates an accurate distance map that eliminates the wrong edges. An adzuki bean (Vigna angularis L.) image was selected as the experimental material and the residual rate of the segmentation counting results of each algorithm was investigated in two cases of two-particle adhesion and multiparticle adhesion. The results of the proposed algorithm were compared with those of the traditional watershed algorithm, edge detection algorithm and concave point analysis algorithm which are commonly used for seed segmentation. In the case of two-particle adhesion, the residual rates of the watershed algorithm and edge detection algorithm were 0.233 and 0.275, respectively, while the residual rate of the concave point analysis algorithm was 0 which proved to be suitable for two-particle adhesion. In the case of multiparticle adhesion, the concave point analysis algorithm was not applicable because it would destroy the seed image. The residual rates of the watershed algorithm and edge detection algorithm were 0.063 and 0.188, respectively, while the residual rate of the proposed algorithm in the two-particle adhesion cases was 0 and the counting accuracy reached 100%, which proved the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The algorithm in this paper significantly improves the accuracy of image segmentation of adherent seeds, and provides a new reference for image segmentation processing in seed testing.

RESUMO

With the development of social economics and the increase of working pressure, more and more women are suffering from long-term serious stress and showing symptoms of perimenopausal depression (PMD). The incidence rate of PMD is increasing, and the physical and mental health are seriously affected. However, due to the lack of accurate knowledge of pathophysiology, its diagnosis and treatment cannot be accurately executed. By consulting the relevant literature in recent years, this paper elaborates the neuroendocrine mechanism of perimenopausal depression from the aspects of epigenetic changes, monoamine neurotransmitter and receptor hypothesis, glial cell-induced neuroinflammation, estrogen receptor, interaction between HPA axis and HPG axis, and micro-organism-brain gut axis. The purpose is to probe into new ways of treatment of PMD by providing new knowledge about the neuroendocrine mechanism and treatment of PMD.

RESUMO

Background: Ovarian hormones play a critical role in emotion processing, which may be a major reason for the high rates of major depressive disorders in women. However, the exact roles of estradiol and progesterone in emotional processing remain unclear. To this end, we performed behavioral and rs-fMRI studies on the effects ovarian hormones on disgust emotion. Methods: In Experiment 1, 95 Chinese female undergraduates completed the single category implicit association test (SC-IAT) and explicit measures of disgust intensity task, 32 in the menstrual phase, 30 in the follicular phase, and 33 in the luteal phase. In Experiment 2, A total of 25 healthy female undergraduates completed three sessions of the rs-fMRI. The menstrual group was scanned during cycle days 2-5, the follicular group during cycle during days 10-13, and the luteal group was scanned 3-7 days before the next menstruation. Results: The behavioral results showed that women during the luteal phase had higher D scores and shorter response times (RTs) to disgust stimuli compared to the menses and follicular phases. In contrast, women during the follicular phase had fewer feelings of disgust and longer RTs to pathogen stimuli compared with that during the menses and luteal phases, but this effect was moderated by the intensity of the stimuli. rs-fMRI studies showed that women during the luteal phase have higher functional connectivity in the salience network than those in the follicular phase. Compared with the menstrual phase, women have lower functional connectivity in the amygdala during the follicular phase. Conclusion: In summary, a more negative attitude to disgust stimuli and the enhanced functional connectivity of the salience network during the luteal phase may be associated with high progesterone levels, whereas lower disgust feelings and reduced functional connectivity of the amygdala during the follicular phase may be associated with high estradiol levels.

RESUMO

Despite extensive research on astrocytic Ca2+ in synaptic transmission, its contribution to the modulation of sensory transmission during different brain states remains largely unknown. Here, by using two-photon microscopy and whole-cell recordings, we show two distinct astrocytic Ca2+ signals in the murine barrel cortex: a small, long-lasting Ca2+ increase during sleep and a large, widespread but short-lasting Ca2+ spike when aroused. The large Ca2+ wave in aroused mice was inositol trisphosphate (IP3)-dependent, evoked by the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system, and enhanced sensory input, contributing to reliable sensory transmission. However, the small Ca2+ transient was IP3-independent and contributed to decreased extracellular K+, hyperpolarization of the neurons, and suppression of sensory transmission. These events respond to different pharmacological inputs and contribute to distinct sleep and arousal functions by modulating the efficacy of sensory transmission. Together, our data demonstrate an important function for astrocytes in sleep and arousal states via astrocytic Ca2+ waves.

RESUMO

The water level fluctuation zone is a unique ecological zone exposed to long-term drying and flooding and plays a critical role in the transport and transformation of carbon and nitrogen materials in reservoir-river systems. Archaea are a vital component of soil ecosystems in the water level fluctuation zones, however, the distribution and function of archaeal communities in responde to long-term wet and dry alternations are still unclear. The community structure of archaea in the drawdown areas at various elevations of the Three Gorges Reservoir was investigated by selecting surface soils (0-5 cm) of different inundation durations at three sites from upstream to downstream according to the flooding pattern. The results revealed that prolonged flooding and drying increased the community diversity of soil archaea, with ammonia-oxidizing archaea being the dominant species in non-flooded regions, while methanogenic archaea were abundant in soils that had been flooded for an extended period of time. Long-term alternation of wetting and drying increases methanogenesis but decreases nitrification. It was determined that soil pH, NO3--N, TOC and TN are significant environmental factors affecting the composition of soil archaeal communities (P = 0.02). Long-term flooding and drying changed the community composition of soil archaea by altering environmental factors, which in turn influenced nitrification and methanogenesis in soils at different elevations. These findings contribute to our understanding of soil carbon and nitrogen transport transformation processes in the water level fluctuation zone as well as the effects of long-term wet and dry alternation on soil carbon and nitrogen cycles. The results of this study can provide a basis for ecological management, environmental management, and long-term operation of reservoirs in water level fluctuation zones.

RESUMO

Major Depression disorder (MDD) is a potentially life-threatening mental illness, however, many patients have a poor response to current treatments. Recent studies have suggested that stress- or trauma-induced oxidative stress and inflammation could be important factors involved in the development of MDD, but the mechanisms remain unclear. We showed that the glymphatic system is a recently discovered structure in the brain that may be involved in the clearance of large molecular and cell debris in extracellular space. In addition, the glymphatic system can help with the removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytokines such as IL-1ß and HIF-1α. Glymphatic impairment can lead to ROS accumulation in the microenvironment, inducing cellular injury signaling and activating NLRP3 in microglia to induce inflammation and, thus, many brain diseases, including psychiatric disorders. Therefore, trauma-induced glymphatic impairment could induce oxidative stress and inflammation, and thus MDD. This paper will review recent advances with regard to stress-induced glymphatic system impairment and ROS-mediated inflammation in MDD.

RESUMO

Chromosome rearrangements play an important role in the speciation of plants and animals, and the recognition of chromosome rearrangement patterns is helpful to elucidate the mechanism of species differentiation at the chromosome level. However, the existing chromosome rearrangement recognition methods have some major limitations, such as low quality, barriers to parental selection, and inability to identify specific rearrangement patterns. Based on the whole genome protein sequences, we constructed the combined figure according to the slope of the collinear fragment, the number of homologous genes, the coordinates in the top left and bottom right of the collinear fragment. The standardized combination figure is compared with the four standard pattern figures, and then combined with the information entropy analysis strategy to automatically classify the chromosome images and identify the chromosome rearrangement pattern. This paper proposes an automatic karyotype analysis method EntroCR (intelligent recognition method of chromosome rearrangement based on information entropy), which integrates rearrangement pattern recognition, result recommendation and related chromosome determination, so as to infer the evolution process of ancestral chromosomes to the existing chromosomes. Validation experiments were conducted using whole-genome data of Gossypium raimondii and Gossypium arboreum, Oryza sativa and Sorghum bicolor. The conclusions were consistent with previous results. EntroCR provides a reference for researchers in species evolution and molecular marker assisted breeding as well as new methods for analyzing karyotype evolution in other species.
