RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease resulting from deficits in synaptic transmission and homeostasis. The Alzheimer's disease brain tends to be hyperexcitable and hypersynchronized, thereby causing neurodegeneration and ultimately disrupting the operational abilities in daily life, leaving patients incapacitated. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a cost-effective, neuro-modulatory technique used for multiple neurological conditions. Over the past two decades, it has been widely used to predict cognitive decline; identify pathophysiological markers; promote neuroplasticity; and assess brain excitability, plasticity, and connectivity. It has also been applied to patients with dementia, because it can yield facilitatory effects on cognition and promote brain recovery after a neurological insult. However, its therapeutic effectiveness at the molecular and synaptic levels has not been elucidated because of a limited number of studies. This study aimed to characterize the neurobiological changes following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment, evaluate its effects on synaptic plasticity, and identify the associated mechanisms. This review essentially focuses on changes in the pathology, amyloidogenesis, and clearance pathways, given that amyloid deposition is a major hypothesis in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Apoptotic mechanisms associated with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation procedures and different pathways mediating gene transcription, which are closely related to the neural regeneration process, are also highlighted. Finally, we discuss the outcomes of animal studies in which neuroplasticity is modulated and assessed at the structural and functional levels by using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, with the aim to highlight future directions for better clinical translations.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a clinically challenging and refractory psychiatric disorder characterized by pathologically hyperactivated brain activity. Continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) is considered a potentially non-invasive treatment for inducing inhibitory effects on the underlying cortex. Numerous studies showed an unsatisfactory efficacy of cTBS for OCD. Accordingly, it seems that cTBS is ineffective for OCD. However, the neglect of varying OCD severities, modest sample size, absence of a multicenter design incorporating inpatients and outpatients, and lack of personalized imaging-guided targeting may constrain the conclusive findings of cTBS efficacy for OCD. In the preliminary experiment, 50 inpatients with OCD were enrolled to receive cTBS (10 sessions/day for five continuous days) or sham over the personalized right pre-supplementary motor area determined by the highest functional connectivity with the subthalamic nucleus according to our prior study. In the extension experiment, 32 outpatients with OCD received cTBS to generalize the treatment effects. The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) was assessed before and after treatment. In the preliminary experiment, the response rates in the cTBS group were 56.52%, respectively, significantly higher than those in the sham group. Further analysis revealed significant YBOCS improvement in patients with moderate OCD symptoms than those with severe OCD symptoms. In the extension experiment, the response rates were 50.00%. Additionally, a significant decrease in YBOCS scores was only found in patients with moderate OCD symptoms. This is the first study with an external validation design across two centers to identify OCD symptoms as playing an important role in cTBS treatment effects, especially in patients with moderate OCD symptoms.

The transition from the swimming larval stage to the settlement stage represents a significant node in the marine sponge developmental process. Previous research has shown that the outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from the bacterial species Tenacibaculum mesophilum associated with the sponge Tedania sp. influence larval settlement: low concentrations of OMVs increase the attachment rate, whereas high concentrations decrease the attachment rate. Here, by comparing the transcriptomes of sponge larvae in filtered seawater (FSW group) and in FSW supplemented with OMVs (FSW-OMV group), the results indicated that bacterial OMVs affected larval settlement by modulating the expression levels of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) in the host. Subsequently, quantitative real-time PCR revealed a decrease in aif expression near the time of settlement (SE) compared to that in the control group. RNA interference (RNAi) was used to target the aif gene, and the rate of larval settlement was significantly reduced, confirming the inhibitory effect of high concentrations of OMVs. Moreover, small RNA (sRNA) sequencing of OMVs revealed the existence of abundant AIF-sRNAs of 30 nt, further suggesting that one pathway for the involvement of sponge-associated bacteria in host development is the transport of OMVs and the direct function of cargo loading.

Patients with EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) respond poorly to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). It has been reported that the number of CD8+T cells is reduced in EGFR-mutated NSCLC. However, the extent of heterogeneity and effector function of distinct populations of CD8+T cells has not been investigated intensively. In addition, studies investigating whether a combination of radiotherapy and ICIs can improve the efficacy of ICIs in EGFR-mutated lung cancer are lacking. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was used to investigate the heterogeneity of CD8+T cell populations in EGFR-mutated NSCLC. The STING pathway was explored after hypofractionated radiation of EGFR-mutated and wild-type cells. Mice bearing LLC-19del and LLC-EGFR tumors were treated with radiotherapy plus anti-PD-L1. The scRNA-seq data showed the percentage of progenitor exhausted CD8+T cells was lower in EGFR-mutated NSCLC. In addition, CD8+T cells in EGFR-mutated NSCLC were enriched in oxidative phosphorylation. In EGFR-mutated and wild-type cells, 8 Gy × 3 increased the expression of chemokines that recruit T cells and activate the cGAS-STING pathway. In the LLC-19del and LLC-EGFR mouse model, the combination of radiation and anti-PD-L1 significantly inhibited the growth of abscopal tumors. The enhanced abscopal effect was associated with systemic CD8+T cell infiltration. This study provided an intensive understanding of the heterogeneity and effector functions of CD8+T cells in EGFR-mutated NSCLC. We showed that the combination of hypofractionated radiation and anti-PD-L1 significantly enhanced the abscopal responses in both EGFR-mutated and wild-type lung cancer by activating CD8+T cells in mice.

The nucleus of almost all massive galaxies contains a supermassive black hole (BH)1. The feedback from the accretion of these BHs is often considered to have crucial roles in establishing the quiescence of massive galaxies2-14, although some recent studies show that even galaxies hosting the most active BHs do not exhibit a reduction in their molecular gas reservoirs or star formation rates15-17. Therefore, the influence of BHs on galaxy star formation remains highly debated and lacks direct evidence. Here, based on a large sample of nearby galaxies with measurements of masses of both BHs and atomic hydrogen (HI), the main component of the interstellar medium18, we show that the HI gas mass to stellar masses ratio (µHI = MHI/M⋆) is more strongly correlated with BH masses (MBH) than with any other galaxy parameters, including stellar mass, stellar mass surface density and bulge masses. Moreover, once the µHI-MBH correlation is considered, µHI loses dependence on other galactic parameters, demonstrating that MBH serves as the primary driver of µHI. These findings provide important evidence for how the accumulated energy from BH accretion regulates the cool gas content in galaxies, by ejecting interstellar medium gas and/or suppressing gas cooling from the circumgalactic medium.

Background: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a valuable tool for detecting cognitive impairment, widely used in many countries. However, there is still a lack of large sample normative data and whose cut-off values for detecting cognitive impairment is considerable controversy. Methods: The assessment conducted in this study utilizes the MoCA scale, specifically employing the Mandarin-8.1 version. This study recruited a total of 3,097 healthy adults aged over 20 years. We performed multiple linear regression analysis, incorporating age, gender, and education level as predictor variables, to examine their associations with the MoCA total score and subdomain scores. Subsequently, we established normative values stratified by age and education level. Finally, we included 242 patients with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and 137 controls with normal cognition, and determined the optimal cut-off value of VCI through ROC curves. Results: The participants in this study exhibit a balanced gender distribution, with an average age of 54.46 years (SD = 14.38) and an average education period of 9.49 years (SD = 4.61). The study population demonstrates an average MoCA score of 23.25 points (SD = 4.82). The multiple linear regression analysis indicates that MoCA total score is influenced by age and education level, collectively accounting for 46.8% of the total variance. Higher age and lower education level are correlated with lower MoCA total scores. A score of 22 is the optimal cut-off value for diagnosing vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). Conclusion: This study offered normative MoCA values specific to the Chinese adults. Furthermore, this study indicated that a score of 26 may not represent the most optimal cut-off value for VCI. And for detecting VCI, a score of 22 may be a better cut-off value.

This study aimed to establish and validate the efficacy of a nomogram model, synthesized through the integration of multi-parametric magnetic resonance radiomics and clinical risk factors, for forecasting perineural invasion in rectal cancer. We retrospectively collected data from 108 patients with pathologically confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma who underwent preoperative multiparametric MRI at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College between April 2019 and August 2023. This dataset was subsequently divided into training and validation sets following a ratio of 7:3. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were implemented to identify independent clinical risk factors associated with perineural invasion (PNI) in rectal cancer. We manually delineated the region of interest (ROI) layer-by-layer on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences and extracted the image features. Five machine learning algorithms were used to construct radiomics model with the features selected by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method. The optimal radiomics model was then selected and combined with clinical features to formulate a nomogram model. The model performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, and its clinical value was assessed via decision curve analysis (DCA). Our final selection comprised 10 optimal radiological features and the SVM model showcased superior predictive efficiency and robustness among the five classifiers. The area under the curve (AUC) values of the nomogram model were 0.945 (0.899, 0.991) and 0.846 (0.703, 0.99) for the training and validation sets, respectively. The nomogram model developed in this study exhibited excellent predictive performance in foretelling PNI of rectal cancer, thereby offering valuable guidance for clinical decision-making. The nomogram could predict the perineural invasion status of rectal cancer in early stage.

Purpose: To observe the relationship between myopia progression and changes in retinal thickness during one year of follow-up among primary school children. Methods: The study included 1161 eyes of 708 myopic children, with 616 (53.06%) right eyes and 545 (46.94%) left eyes. The participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, including visual acuity, axial length (AL), autorefraction, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination in 2016 and in 2017. An analysis was conducted on the differences in retinal thickness between different genders and between high myopia and nonhigh myopia. Furthermore, the study delved into the correlation between the progression of myopia and the changes of retinal thickness. Results: The average diopter was -1.83 ± 1.29D, average AL was 23.78 ± 0.94 mm, and average foveal thickness was 228.02 ± 23.00 µm. For the inner retina, the median value [the lower quartile value, the upper quartile value] of the foveal thickness was thicker in the high myopia group than the nonhigh myopia group (67 [64; 74] µm vs. 63 [56; 70] µm), while the parafoveal region and perifoveal region were thinner in the high myopia group than the nonhigh myopia group (106 [100; 123] µm vs. 124 [117; 130] µm; 95.0 [93; 102] µm vs. 104 [100; 108] µm). Among all the children with myopia, 67.53% (784/1161) of them have a diopter progression within one year. The AL progression was 95.43% (1108/1161). The retinal thickness of all children has slightly increased in various regions. As the AL of the eye increased and the diopter decreased, the progression degree of inner retinal thickness and full retinal thickness (exclusive of full fovea) decreased. Conclusion: For the school-age myopic children, the inner foveal retinal thickness were thicker in highly myopic students than in the nonhighly myopic students, while the parafoveal and perifoveal retina were thinner in highly myopic students. The inner and full retinal thicknesses of male students were thicker than that of females. The progression of myopia mainly affected the changes of the inner retinal thickness in the one-year follow-up.

The advancement of interface engineering has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in overcoming the primary impediment associated with sluggish reaction kinetics in supercapacitor electrodes. In this investigation, we employed a facile co-precipitation method to synthesize NiCoMoO4/MXene heterostructures utilizing Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets as carriers. This heterostructure inhibits the restacking of MXene nanosheets and simultaneously enhances the exposure of electrochemically active sites in NiCoMoO4 nanorods, thereby mitigating the reduction in specific capacitance resulting from volumetric fluctuations. The NiCoMoO4/MXene electrode, possessing pseudo-capacitance properties, demonstrates an impressive level of specific capacitance, exceptional performance across various charging rates, and consistent behavior throughout repeated cycles. By optimizing the mass ratio, this electrode achieves a specific capacity of 1900 F/g under a current density of 1 A/g. Even after enduring 10,000 cycles at a significantly higher current density of 5 A/g, it still maintains an impressive retention rate of 94.73 %. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the improved electronic coupling within the NiCoMoO4/MXene heterostructure. The integration of NiCoMoO4/MXene cathode and activated carbon (AC) anode with an alkaline gel electrolyte containing potassium ferricyanide in flexible quasi-solid-state supercapacitors (FSSCs) results in exceptional electrochemical performance and flexibility. These FSSCs demonstrate a maximum energy density of 72.89 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 850 W kg-1, while maintaining an impressive power output of 16,780 W kg-1 with an energy density of 37.28 Wh kg-1. Based on these outstanding properties, it is evident that the NiCoMoO4/MXene heterojunction possesses significant advantages as electrode material for supercapacitors, and the fabricated FSSCs devices pave a new pathway for flexible electronic devices.

OBJECTIVE: CRC patients with sarcopenia often have a poor prognosis, and the timing for preoperative intervention to improve sarcopenia is unclear. Sarcopenia can affect the body's overall inflammatory status. This study aims to investigate whether sarcopenia exacerbates the inflammatory response in colorectal cancer patients following surgical stimulation, and consequently, its impact on their prognosis. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 215 CRC patients, who were categorized into either a sarcopenia group or a non-sarcopenia group based on their Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI) values. Inflammation-related indicators were collected from patients both before and after surgery, allowing for the calculation of the differences in preoperative and postoperative changes. The correlation between inflammatory markers and postoperative complications was also assessed. All patients were followed up for a period ranging from 2 to 5 years, with an average follow-up duration of 3 years, during which their recurrence and mortality rates were recorded. Additionally, the relationship between inflammation indicators was explored. RESULTS: 45 out of 215 patients with sarcopenia had higher levels of preoperative baseline inflammation markers such as CRP (P=0.002), IBI (P<0.001), SIRI (P=0.009), and SII (P=0.002) compared to non-sarcopenia patients. There was a significant difference in inflammatory indicators before and after surgery between dIBI, dSIRI, and dSII, with the largest effect observed. Additionally, the predictive capabilities of dIBI, dSIRI, and dSII on postoperative complications, as measured by AUROC, were found to be 0.938, 0.877, and 0.818 respectively. Furthermore, survival analysis indicated that dIBI, dSIRI,and dSII were all effective in predicting long-term postoperative mortality in patients. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest sarcopenia plays a significant role in exacerbating postoperative inflammatory response in CRC patients, leading to an increased risk of postoperative complications and influencing long-term survival outcomes.

Organic-metal coordination materials with rich structural diversity are considered as promising electrode materials for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries. However, the electrochemical performance can be constrained by the limited number of active sites and structural instability under the discharge/charge process. Herein, organometallic polymer microspheres (Fe-PDA-220) with a unique d-π conjugated structure was designed and successfully constructed through a simple synchronous polymerization and coordination reactions. Polymerization of phenylenediamine was initiated by Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions generated synchronously during the polymerization integrated with poly-aminoquinone chains to form Fe-C12N8 active centers. Used as electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries, the distinctive Fe-C bond significantly boosts the structural stability, and the π-d conjugation system could facilitate electron transfer. A high reversible capacity of 345 mAh g-1 was delivered at 0.1 A g-1 and a capacity of 106 mAh g-1 was maintained even after discharged/charged at 1.0 A g-1 for 5000 cycles, outperforming most reported coordination materials. Spectroscopic and electronic analyses revealed that a two-electron reaction occurred per active unit, accompanied by the reversible redox evolution of the C=N groups and Fe ions during  sodiation/desodiation. This work provides a promising and efficient strategy for boosting the electrochemical performance of organic electrode materials by the design of organometallic polymers.

We have developed a global optimization program named PGA based on particle swarm optimization algorithm coupled with genetic operators for the structures of atomic clusters. The effectiveness and efficiency of the PGA program can be demonstrated by efficiently obtaining the tetrahedral Au20 and double-ring tubular B20, and identifying the ground state ZrSi 17 - 20 - $$ {\mathrm{ZrSi}}_{17\hbox{--} 20}^{-} $$ clusters through the comparison between the simulated and the experimental photoelectron spectra (PESs). Then, the PGA was applied to search for the global minimum structures of Mg n - $$ {\mathrm{Mg}}_n^{-} $$ (n = 3-30) clusters, new structures have been found for sizes n = 6, 7, 12, 14, and medium-sized 21-30 were first determined. The high consistency between the simulated spectra and the experimental ones once again demonstrates the efficiency of the PGA program. Based on the ground-state structures of these Mg n - $$ {\mathrm{Mg}}_n^{-} $$ (n = 3-30) clusters, their structural evolution and electronic properties were subsequently explored. The performance on Au20, B20, ZrSi 17 - 20 - $$ {\mathrm{ZrSi}}_{17\hbox{--} 20}^{-} $$ , and Mg n - $$ {\mathrm{Mg}}_n^{-} $$ (n = 3-30) clusters indicates the promising potential of the PGA program for exploring the global minima of other clusters. Diminished testosterone levels have been documented as a key factor in numerous male health disorders. Both human and animal studies have consistently demonstrated that cadmium (Cd), a pervasive environmental heavy metal, results in decreased testosterone levels. However, the exact mechanism through which Cd interferes with testosterone synthesis remains incompletely elucidated. This research sought to examine the impact of cellular senescence on Cd-suppressed testosterone synthesis. We also investigated the related m6A modification mechanism. The results demonstrated that Cd (100 mg/L) led to a decrease in testosterone levels, along with downregulated expression of testosterone synthase in C57BL/6 N male mice. Furthermore, Cd significantly increased ß-galactosidase staining intensity, senescence-related proteins, and senescence-related secretory phenotypes in mouse testicular Leydig cells. Subsequent investigations revealed that Cd decreased the mRNA and protein levels of NAD-dependent deacetylase Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) in Leydig cells. Mechanistically, mice treated with resveratrol (50 mg/kg), a specific SIRT1 activator, mitigated Leydig cell senescence and reversed Cd-reduced testosterone levels in mouse testes. These effects were also restored by SIRT1 overexpression in Leydig cells. Additionally, we found that Cd increased the level of methyltransferase enzyme METTL3 and Sirt1 m6A modification in Leydig cells. Mettl3 siRNA effectively restored Cd-enhanced Sirt1 m6A level and reversed Cd-downregulated Sirt1 mRNA expression in Leydig cells. Overall, our findings suggest that Cd exposure inhibits testosterone synthesis via Sirt1 m6A modification-mediated senescence in mouse testes. These results offer an experimental basis for investigating the causes and potential treatments of hypotestosteronemia induced by environmental factors.

Background: The survival rates of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have improved significantly, but there is no consensus on whether they can be considered cured. We aimed to determine whether a statistical cure could be achieved for patients with NPC in the contemporary therapeutic landscape. Methods: This retrospective multicenter study enrolled 6315 patients with nonmetastatic NPC from nonendemic and endemic regions of China from 2007 to 2020. We applied mixture and nonmixture cure models to estimate the cure probabilities and cure times by incorporating background mortality for the general population, matching by gender, age, and diagnosed year. Findings: With death as the uncured event, the probability of patients with NPC achieving a life expectancy at par with the general population was 78.1%. Considering progression as the uncured event, the likelihood of patients attaining a life expectancy without progression equivalent to that of the general population was 72.4%. For individuals, the probabilities of achieving cure were conditional and time-dependent, requiring approximately 7.1 and 4.7 years with 95% certainty, respectively. The corresponding cure times for uncured patients were 8.9 and 6.8 years, respectively. The cure probability was correlated with age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score, TNM staging, Epstein-Barr virus DNA copies, and lactate dehydrogenase. The correlation was excellent between 5-year overall survival/progression-free survival and cure fractions. Interpretation: Statistical cure is potentially achievable among patients with NPC undergoing contemporary treatment modalities. The results hold significant potential implications for both clinical practice and patient perspectives. BACKGROUND: Despite the recognized role of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in carcinogenesis, its independent association with cancer risk beyond traditional obesity measures remains unknown due to limited availability of imaging data. METHODS: We developed an estimation equation for VAT volume (L) using Elastic Net Regression based on demographic and anthropometric data in a subcohort of participants in the UK Biobank (UKB; N = 23,148) with abdominal MRI scans. This equation was externally validated in 2,713 participants from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) according to sex, age, and race groups. We then applied the equation to the overall UKB cohort of 461,665 participants to evaluate the prospective association between estimated VAT (eVAT) and cancer risk using Cox proportional hazards models. We also calculated the population attributable risk (PAR) of cancer associated with eVAT and BMI. RESULTS: eVAT showed a high correlation with measured VAT in internal and external validations (r = 0.81-0.86). During a median 12-year follow-up in the UKB, we documented 37,397 incident cancer cases; eVAT was significantly associated with elevated risk of obesity-related and individual cancers, independent of BMI and waist circumference. PAR for total cancer associated with high (quartiles 2-4 vs 1) eVAT (9.0-11.6%) was higher than high BMI (Q2-4 vs 1; 5.0-8.2%). CONCLUSIONS: eVAT showed robust performance in both UKB and NHANES and was associated with cancer risk independent of BMI and waist circumference. This study provides a potential clinical tool for VAT estimation and underscores that VAT can be an important target for cancer prevention.

AIMS: To investigate the impact of different corneal diameters on corneal morphology and biomechanical outcome during preoperative screening for corneal refractive surgery. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 300 patients who underwent corneal refractive surgery at Eye and ENT Hospital, Fudan University between October 2023 and December 2023. All patients had no history of keratoconus or previous corneal surgery. Patients were categorized into two groups based on corneal topography measurements: (1) normal corneal diameter group (n=159), those with corneal diameter ranging from 11.5 mm to 12.0 mm; (2) abnormal corneal diameter group (n=141), those with corneal diameter smaller than 10.0 mm or larger than 12.5 mm. Corneal thickness, morphologic data, and biomechanical data were measured using Pentacam corneal topography. Correlation analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between corneal diameter and various corneal topography and biomechanical data. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in corneal topography data including BFSf (F=43.21), BFSb (F=30.24), Df (F=15.32), Dp (F=32.36), Da (F=9.66), D (F=58.36), PPIavg (F=32.64), and ARTmax (F=12.06) between the groups (P<0.05). Additionally, BFSf, BFSb, Db, Dp, D, and PPIavg exhibited statistically significant differences between any two groups (P<0.05). Significant differences were also found in Df, Da, and ARTmax between small and large corneas, as well as between normal-sized and large corneas (P<0.05). Correlation analysis indicated negative correlations between corneal diameter and A1V (r=-0.12), HCdArcLength (r=-0.17), CBI (r=-0.27), bIOP (r=-0.13), Df (r=-0.025), PPIavg (r=-0.028), and TBI (r=-0.27). Conversely, BFSf (r=0.009), BFSb (r=0.001), PD (r=0.15), and ARTH (r=0.37) displayed positive correlations with corneal diameter. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal diameter significantly affects preoperative screening for corneal refractive surgery. Smaller corneal diameters exhibit a greater influence on the corneal topography BAD analysis system.

As an important sustainable method for chemical synthesis, organic electrosynthesis experienced a renaissance in recent years for its excellent atom economy. Although microchannel reactors have been proposed to advanced electrosynthesis devices to obtain low energy cost and high reaction performance, the complex multiphasic flow in the electrochemical microchannels are very less reported and the effects of flow condition on the electrosynthesis reaction are less reported. Taking the electrosynthesis of tetraethyl thiuram disulfide (TETD) as a typical case, we developed a visualized electrochemical microchannel reactor equipped with fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) loaded glass electrode to investigate the gas-liquid-liquid triple phase flow pattern and the main factors influenced the response current at certain applied cell voltage. The gas-liquid-liquid hybrid flow with low gas hold-up and high liquid flow rate was found crucial for preventing coverage of TETD on the electrode, which provided 23.1% low current attenuation ratio at 3.0 V cell voltage. The research not only exhibited the complex evolution mechanism of the response current, but also showed the importance of flow condition control for balancing the work efficiency and energy consumption of electrosynthesis process.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Epidemiologic evidence for dietary influence on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk through the gut microbiome remains limited. METHODS: Leveraging 307 men and 212 women with stool metagenomes and dietary data, we characterized and validated a sex-specific dietary pattern associated with the CRC-related gut microbial signature (CRC Microbial Dietary Score [CMDS]). We evaluated the associations of CMDS with CRC risk according to Fusobacterium nucleatum, pks+Escherichia coli, and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) status in tumor tissue using Cox proportional hazards regression in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2018), Nurses' Health Study (NHS) (1984-2020), and NHS II (1991-2019). RESULTS: The CMDS was characterized by high industrially processed foods and low unprocessed fiber-rich foods intakes. In 259,200 participants, we documented 3,854 incident CRC cases over 6,467,378 person-years of follow-up. CMDS was associated with a higher risk of CRC (Ptrend<0.001), with a multivariable hazard ratio (HRQ5vs.Q1) of 1.25 (95%CI, 1.13-1.39). The association remained after adjusting for previously established dietary patterns, e.g., the Western and prudent diets. Notably, the association was stronger for tumoral F. nucleatum-positive (HRQ5vs.Q1, 2.51; 95%CI, 1.68-3.75; Ptrend<0.001) (Pheterogeneity=0.03, positivity vs. negativity), pks+E. coli-positive (HRQ5vs.Q1, 1.68; 95%CI, 0.84-3.38; Ptrend=0.005) (Pheterogeneity=0.01, positivity vs. negativity), and ETBF-positive CRC (HRQ5vs.Q1, 2.06; 95%CI, 1.10-3.88; Ptrend=0.016) (Pheterogeneity=0.06, positivity vs. negativity), compared with their negative counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: CMDS was associated with increased CRC risk, especially for tumors with detectable F. nucleatum, pks+E. coli, and ETBF in tissue. Our findings support a potential role of the gut microbiome underlying the dietary effects on CRC.
