RESUMO

Beef and dairy products are rich in protein and amino acids, making them highly nutritious for human consumption. The increasing use of gene editing technology in agriculture has paved the way for genetic improvement in cattle breeding via the development of the CRISPR/Cas (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated protein) system. Gene sequences are artificially altered and employed in the pursuit of improving bovine breeding research through targeted knockout, knock-in, substitution, and mutation methods. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of the advancements in gene editing technology and its diverse applications in enhancing both quantitative and qualitative traits across livestock. These applications encompass areas such as meat quality, milk quality, fertility, disease resistance, environmental adaptability, sex control, horn development, and coat colour. Furthermore, the review considers prospective ideas and insights that may be employed to refine breeding traits, enhance editing efficiency, and navigate the ethical considerations associated with these advancements. The review's focus on improving the quality of beef and milk is intended to enhance the economic viability of these products. Furthermore, it constitutes a valuable resource for scholars and researchers engaged in the fields of cattle genetic improvement and breeding.

RESUMO

In recent decades, the term "ecosystem" has garnered substantial attention in scholarly and managerial discourse, featuring prominently in academic and applied contexts. While individual scholars have made significant contributions to the study of various types of ecosystem, there appears to be a research gap marked by a lack of comprehensive synthesis and refinement of findings across diverse ecosystems. This paper systematically addresses this gap through a hybrid methodology, employing bibliometric and content analyses to systematically review the literature from 1993 to 2023. The primary research aim is to critically examine theoretical studies on different ecosystem types, specifically focusing on business, innovation, and platform ecosystems. The methodology of this study involves a content review of the identified literature, combining quantitative bibliometric analyses to differentiate patterns and content analysis for in-depth exploration. The core findings center on refining and summarizing the definitions of business, innovation, and platform ecosystems, shedding light on both commonalities and distinctions. Notably, the research unveils shared characteristics such as openness and diversity across these ecosystems while highlighting significant differences in terms of participants and objectives. Furthermore, the paper delves into the interconnections within these three ecosystem types, offering insights into their dynamics and paving the way for discussions on future research directions. This comprehensive examination not only advances our understanding of business, innovation, and platform ecosystems but also lays the groundwork for future scholarly inquiries in this dynamic and evolving field.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: HY-088 injection is an ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (USPIOs) composed of iron oxide crystals coated with polyacrylic acid (PAA) on the surface. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and mass balance of HY-088 injection. METHODS: The pharmacokinetics of [55Fe]-HY-088 and [14C]-HY-088 were investigated in 48 SD rats by intravenous injection of 8.5 (low-dose group), 25.5 (medium-dose group), and 85 (high-dose group) mg/100 µCi/kg. Tissue distribution was studied by intravenous injection of 35 mg/100 µCi/kg in 48 SD rats, and its tissue distribution in vivo was obtained by ex vivo tissue assay. At the same time, [14C]-HY-088 was injected intravenously at a dose of 25.5 mg/100 µCi/kg into 16 SD rats, and its tissue distribution in vivo was studied by quantitative whole-body autoradiography. [14C]-HY-088 and [55Fe]-HY-088 were injected intravenously into 24 SD rats at a dose of 35 mg/100 µCi/kg, and their metabolism was observed. RESULTS: In the pharmacokinetic study, [55Fe]-HY-088 reached the maximum observed concentration (Cmax) at 0.08 h in the low- and medium-dose groups of SD rats. [14C]-HY-088 reached Cmax at 0.08 h in the three groups of SD rats. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of [55Fe]-HY-088 and [14C]-HY-088 increased with increasing dose. In the tissue distribution study, [55Fe]-HY-088 and [14C]-HY-088 were primarily distributed in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes of both female and male rats. In the mass balance study conducted over 57 days, the radioactive content of 55Fe from [55Fe]-HY-088 was primarily found in the carcass, accounting for 86.42 ± 4.18% in females and 95.46 ± 6.42% in males. The radioactive recovery rates of [14C]-HY-088 in the urine of female and male rats were 52.99 ± 5.48% and 60.66 ± 2.23%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Following single intravenous administration of [55Fe]-HY-088 and [14C]-HY-088 in SD rats, rapid absorption was observed. Both [55Fe]-HY-088 and [14C]-HY-088 were primarily distributed in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. During metabolism, the radioactivity of [55Fe]-HY-088 is mainly present in the carcass, whereas the 14C-labeled [14C]-HY-088 shell PAA is eliminated from the body mainly through the urine.

RESUMO

Intramuscular fat (IMF) refers to the fat that accumulates between muscle bundles or within muscle cells, whose content significantly impacts the taste, tenderness, and flavor of meat products, making it a crucial economic characteristic in livestock production. However, the intricate mechanisms governing IMF deposition, involving non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), genes, and complex regulatory networks, remain largely enigmatic. Identifying adipose tissue-specific genes and ncRNAs is paramount to unravel these molecular mysteries. This study, conducted on Jiaxian red cattle, harnessed whole transcriptome sequencing to unearth the nuances of circRNAs and miRNAs across seven distinct tissues. The interplay of these ncRNAs was assessed through differential expression analysis and network analysis. These findings are not only pivotal in unveiling the intricacies of fat deposition mechanisms but also lay a robust foundation for future research, setting the stage for enhancing IMF content in Jiaxian red cattle breeding.

RESUMO

Feed efficiency is a major constraint in the beef industry and has a significant negative correlation with residual feed intake (RFI). RFI is widely used as a measure of feed efficiency in beef cattle and is independent of economic traits such as body weight and average daily gain. However, key traits with commonality or specificity among beef cattle breeds at the same level of RFI have not been reported. Accordingly, the present study hypothesized that signatures associated with feed efficiency would have commonality or specificity in the liver of cattle breeds at the same RFI level. By comparing and integrating liver transcriptome data, we investigated the critical signatures closely associated with RFI in beef cattle using weighted co-expression network analysis, consensus module analysis, functional enrichment analysis and protein network interaction analysis. The results showed that the consensus modules in Angus and Charolais cattle were negatively correlated, and four (turquoise, red, tan, yellow) were significantly positively correlated in Angus liver, while (turquoise, red) were significantly negatively correlated in Charolais liver. These consensus modules were found to be primarily involved in biological processes such as substance metabolism, energy metabolism and gene transcription, which may be one of the possible explanations for the difference in feed efficiency between the two beef breeds. This research also identified five key candidate genes, PLA2G12B, LCAT, MTTP, LCAT, ABCA1 and FADS1, which are closely associated with hepatic lipid metabolism. The present study has identified some modules, genes and pathways that may be the major contributors to the variation in feed efficiency among different cattle breeds, providing a new perspective on the molecular mechanisms of feed efficiency in beef cattle and a research basis for investigating molecular markers associated with feed efficiency in beef cattle.

RESUMO

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential regulators of numerous biological processes in animals, including adipogenesis. Despite the abundance of miRNAs associated with adipogenesis, their exact mechanisms of action remain largely unknown. Our study highlights the role of bta-miR-484 as a major regulator of adipocyte proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. Here, we demonstrated that the expression of bta-miR-484 initially increased during adipogenesis before decreasing. Overexpression of bta-miR-484 in adipocytes ultimately inhibited cell proliferation and differentiation, reduced the number of EdU fluorescence-stained cells, increased the number of G1 phase cells, reduced the number of G2 and S phase cells, and downregulated the expression of proliferation markers (CDK2 and PCNA) and differentiation markers (CEBPA, FABP4, and LPL). Additionally, overexpression of bta-miR-484 promoted the expression of apoptosis-related genes (Caspase 3, Caspase 9, and BAX), and increased the number of apoptotic cells observed via flow cytometry. In contrast, bta-miR-484 inhibition in adipocytes yielded opposite effects to those observed during bta-miR-484 overexpression. Moreover, luciferase reporter assays confirmed SFRP1 as a target gene of bta-miR-484, and revealed that bta-miR-484 downregulates SFRP1 mRNA expression. These findings offer compelling evidence that bta-miR-484 targets SFRP1, inhibits proliferation and differentiation, and promotes apoptosis. Therefore, these results offer novel insights into the bta-miR-484 regulation of adipocyte growth and development.

RESUMO

ADAM metallopeptidase with thrombospondin type 1 motif (ADAMTS) are secreted, multi-domain matrix-related zinc endopeptidases that play a role in organogenesis, assembly and degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM), cancer and inflammation. Genome-wide identification and analysis of the bovine ADAMTS gene family has not yet been carried out. In this study, 19 ADAMTS family genes were identified in Bos taurus by genome-wide bioinformatics analysis, and they were unevenly distributed on 12 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis shows that the Bos taurus ADAMTS are divided into eight subfamilies, with highly consistent gene structures and motifs within the same subfamily. Collinearity analysis showed that the Bos taurus ADAMTS gene family is homologous to other bovine subfamily species, and many ADAMTS genes may be derived from tandem replication and segmental replication. In addition, based on the analysis of RNA-seq data, we found the expression pattern of ADAMTS gene in different tissues. Meanwhile, we also analyzed the expression profile of ADAMTS gene in the inflammatory response of bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) stimulated by LPS by qRT-PCR. The results can provide ideas for understanding the evolutionary relationship and expression pattern of ADAMTS gene in Bovidae, and clarify the theoretical basis of the function of ADAMTS in inflammation.

RESUMO

Circular RNAs (CircRNAs) are covalently closed-loop non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecules present in eukaryotes. Numerous studies have demonstrated that circRNAs are important regulators of bovine fat deposition, but their precise mechanisms remain unclear. Previous transcriptome sequencing studies have indicated that circADAMTS16, a circRNA derived from the a disintegrin-like metalloproteinases with the thrombospondin motif 16 (ADAMTS16) gene, is high expressed in bovine adipose tissue. This gives a hint that the circRNA may be involved in the process of bovine lipid metabolism. In this study, the targeting relationship between circADAMTS16 and miR-10167-3p was verified using a dual-luciferase reporter assay. Then, the functions of circADAMTS16 and miR-10167-3p in bovine adipocytes were explored through gain-of-function and lose-of-function. The mRNA expression levels of genes were detected by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), and lipid droplet formation was phenotypically evaluated by Oil Red O staining. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected using CCK-8, EdU, and flow cytometry. We demonstrated that circADAMTS16 targeted binding to miR-10167-3p. The up-regulation of circADAMTS16 inhibited the differentiation of bovine preadipocytes, and the overexpression of miR-10167-3p promoted the differentiation of bovine preadipocytes. Meanwhile, CCK-8 and EdU results indicated that circADAMTS16 promoted adipocyte proliferation. Subsequently, flow cytometry analysis showed that circADAMTS16 promoted cell transition from G0/G1 phase to S phase, and inhibited cell apoptosis. However, up-regulation of miR-10167-3p inhibited cell proliferation and promoted apoptosis. Briefly, circADAMTS16 inhibited the differentiation and promotes the proliferation of bovine adipocytes by targeting miR-10167-3p during bovine fat deposition, which provides new insights into the mechanism of circRNAs regulation of beef quality.

RESUMO

Background: Currently, few studies have examined the mental states of Women methamphetamine patients, and the influence of impulsivity and perceived social support on substance misuse-induced mental disorders is unclear. We want to examine the mental state of women with methamphetamine use disorder and compare it to the Chinese norm value of healthy women. Investigate the connection between impulsivity, perceived social support and mental state of women with methamphetamine use disorder. Method: Two hundred thirty women subjects with a history of methamphetamine usage were recruited. The Chinese version of the SCL-90-R, (SCL-90) was used to evaluate psychological health problems, while the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Barratt Impulsiveness Seale-11 (BIS-11) were utilized to evaluate perceived social support and impulsivity, respectively. The t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, multivariable linear regression, stepwise regression models, moderating effect analysis were used to analyze the statistics. Results: There was a noticeable difference between the Chinese norm and all participants' SCL-90 ratings, especially for Somatization (t = 24.34, p < 0.001), Anxiety (t = 22.23, p < 0.001), Phobic anxiety (t = 26.47, p < 0.001), and Psychoticism (t = 24.27, p < 0.001). In addition, perceived social support levels and impulsivity levels are independently predictive of SCL-90 scores. Lastly, the impact of Impulsivity on SCL-90 can be modulated by perceived social support. Conclusion: According to this study, women with methamphetamine use disorder have worse mental health conditions compared to healthy subjects. Furthermore, certain psychological symptoms associated with methamphetamine use in women can be aggravated by impulsivity, while perceived social support acts as a protective factor for methamphetamine-related psychiatric symptoms. Specifically, perceived social support weakens the impact of impulsivity on psychiatric symptoms in women with methamphetamine use disorder.

RESUMO

Background: Skeletal muscle is not only an important tissue involved in exercise and metabolism, but also an important part of livestock and poultry meat products. Its growth and development determines the output and quality of meat to a certain extent, and has an important impact on the economic benefits of animal husbandry. Skeletal muscle development is a complex regulatory network process, and its molecular mechanism needs to be further studied. Method: We used a weighted co-expression network (WGCNA) and single gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to study the RNA-seq data set of bovine tissue differential expression analysis, and the core genes and functional enrichment pathways closely related to muscle tissue development were screened. Finally, the accuracy of the analysis results was verified by tissue expression profile detection and bovine skeletal muscle satellite cell differentiation model in vitro (BSMSCs). Results: In this study, Atp2a1, Tmod4, Lmod3, Ryr1 and Mybpc2 were identified as marker genes in muscle tissue, which are mainly involved in glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, AMPK pathway and insulin pathway. The assay results showed that these five genes were highly expressed in muscle tissue and positively correlated with the differentiation of bovine BSMSCs. Conclusions: In this study, several muscle tissue characteristic genes were excavated, which may play an important role in muscle development and provide new insights for bovine molecular genetic breeding.

RESUMO

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have been powerful solutions used to improve food yield, quality, and nutrition, increase safety and traceability while decreasing resource consumption, and eliminate food waste. Compared with several qualitative reviews on AI in food safety, we conducted an in-depth quantitative and systematic review based on the Core Collection database of WoS (Web of Science). To discover the historical trajectory and identify future trends, we analysed the literature concerning AI technologies in food safety from 2012 to 2022 by CiteSpace. In this review, we used bibliometric methods to describe the development of AI in food safety, including performance analysis, science mapping, and network analysis by CiteSpace. Among the 1855 selected articles, China and the United States contributed the most literature, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences released the largest number of relevant articles. Among all the journals in this field, PLoS ONE and Computers and Electronics in Agriculture ranked first and second in terms of annual publications and co-citation frequency. The present character, hot spots, and future research trends of AI technologies in food safety research were determined. Furthermore, based on our analyses, we provide researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with the big picture of research on AI in food safety across the whole process, from precision agriculture to precision nutrition, through 28 enlightening articles.

RESUMO

Ferroptosis plays a pivotal role in regulating various physiological processes and quality of post-mortem muscle. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis remain unclear. The study investigated how ferroptosis was induced in beef during cold storage. Results showed that the expression of autophagy-related genes, LC3, ATG5, ATG7, and NCOA4 in beef during cold storage promoted the degradation of ferritin heavy chains. Ferritin evoked ferroptosis by releasing free iron, inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and inhibiting the glutathione (GSH)-glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) pathway. Furthermore, treatment of myoblasts with GSK 2656157 (autophagy inhibitor) showed that ferritin degradation was lower in the GSK 2656157-treated myoblasts than in the control, while GSH content and GPX4 activity were higher than the control (P < 0.05), and the contents of free iron, ROS and malondialdehyde, and apoptosis were lower than the control (P < 0.05). These results suggest that ferroptosis is induced by degradation of ferritin via the autophagic pathway.

RESUMO

MicroRNAs have been recently reported to act as key regulators of adipogenesis, a multifactorial complex process. One miRNA, miR-302b, is an important regulator of cell proliferation and differentiation and controls cancer development, but we speculate that miR-302b may also regulate bovine adipogenesis. Herein we have evaluated the role of this miRNA in bovine adipocyte differentiation using quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR), Oil Red O staining, a dual-luciferase reporter. CDK2 was identified as the target gene of miR-302b, and miR-302b agomir promoted mRNA and protein expression levels of adipocyte-specific genes. In addition, a CCK-8 kit was used to show that miR-302b agomir, but not the negative control, inhibits preadipocyte proliferation. In conclusion, miR-302b promotes bovine preadipocyte differentiation and inhibits proliferation by targeting CDK2.

RESUMO

The preclinical assessment of efficacy and safety is essential for cardiovascular drug development in order to guarantee effective prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and avoid human health endangerment and a huge waste of resources. Rhythmic mechanical beating as one of the crucial cardiomyocyte properties has been exploited to establish a drug assessment biosensing platform. However, the conventional label-free biosensing platforms are difficult to perform high-throughput and high-resolution mechanical beating detection for a single cardiomyocyte, while label-based strategies are limited by pharmacologically adverse effects and phototoxicity. Herein, we propose a biosensing platform involving the multichannel electrode array device and the universal mechanical beating detection system. The platform can determine the optimal characteristic working frequency of different devices and dynamically interrogate the viability of multisite single cardiomyocytes to establish the optimized cell-based model for sensitive drug assessment. The subtle changes of mechanical beating signals induced by cardiovascular drugs can be detected by the platform, thereby demonstrating its high performance in pharmacological assessment. The universal and sensitive drug assessment biosensing platform is believed to be widely applied in cardiology investigating and preclinical drug screening.

RESUMO

Buffalo meat is of good quality because it is lean and tender, and could bring significant cardiovascular benefits. The underlying difference in muscle development and meat quality is a complex and precisely orchestrated process which has been demonstrated to be regulated by long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). However, the regulatory role of lncRNAs in the growth and development of buffalo skeletal muscle is still unclear. In this study, the Ribo-Zero RNA-Seq method was used to explore the lncRNA expression profiles of buffalo myoblasts during the proliferation and differentiation phases. A specific set of 9,978 lncRNAs was found. By comparing the expression profiles of lncRNAs, it was found that there were 1,576 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) during buffalo myoblast differentiation. Twelve DELs were chosen and subsequently verified in eight different buffalo tissues during fetal and adult stages by using qPCR. Gene11007 was found to be one of the most down-regulated lncRNAs during buffalo myoblasts differentiation and it was subsequently characterized. EdU, CCK-8, qPCR and western blotting assays showed that gene11007 promoted the proliferation of buffalo myoblasts but it had no effect on cell differentiation. Our research may enrich the genome annotations of buffalo and provide a new molecular target for the in-depth understanding of the regulation of lncRNAs in skeletal muscle.

RESUMO

Adipogenesis is a complex and precisely orchestrated process mediated by a series of adipogenic regulatory factors. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of microRNAs (miRNAs) in diverse biological processes, most specifically in regulating cell differentiation and proliferation. However, the mechanisms of miRNAs in adipogenesis are largely unknown. In this study, we found that miR-107 expression was higher in bovine adipose tissue than that in other tissues, and there was a downregulation trend during adipocyte differentiation. To explore the function of miR-107 in adipocyte differentiation, agomiR-107 and antiagomiR-107 were transfected into bovine adipocytes, respectively. Oil Red O staining, CCK-8, EdU assays, RT-qPCR, and Western blotting were performed, and the results showed that overexpressed miR-107 significantly suppressed fat deposition and adipocyte differentiation, while knockdown of miR-107 promoted fat deposition and adipocytes differentiation. In addition, through bioinformatics analysis, luciferase reporter assays, RT-qPCR, and Western blotting, we identified apolipoprotein 2 (APOC2) as a target of miR-107. Transfection of siRNA-APOC2 into adipocytes led to suppression in adipocyte differentiation and proliferation, suggesting a positive role of APOC2 in bovine lipogenesis. In summary, our findings suggested that miR-107 regulates bovine adipocyte differentiation and lipogenesis by directly targeting APOC2, and these results. These theoretical and experimental basis for future clarification of the regulation mechanism of adipocyte differentiation and lipogenesis. Moreover, for the highly conserved among different species, miR-107 may be a potential molecular target to be used for the treatment of lipid-related diseases in the future.

RESUMO

Background: Fat deposition is an important economic trait in livestock and poultry production. However, the relationship between various genes and signal pathways of fat deposition is still unclear to a large extent. The purpose of this study is to analyze the potential molecular targets and related molecular pathways in bovine subcutaneous adipose tissue. Results: We downloaded the GSE116775 microarray dataset from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). The weighted gene co-expression network (WGCNA) was used to analyze the gene expression profile, and the key gene modules with the highest correlation with subcutaneous adipose tissue were identified, and the functional enrichment of the key modules was analyzed. Then, the "real" Hub gene was screened by in-module analysis and protein-protein interaction network (PPI), and its expression level in tissue samples and adipocytes was verified. The study showed that a total of nine co-expression modules were identified, and the number of genes in these modules ranged from 101 to 1,509. Among them, the blue module is most closely related to subcutaneous adipose tissue, containing 1,387 genes. These genes were significantly enriched in 10 gene ontologies including extracellular matrix organization, biological adhesion, and collagen metabolic process, and were mainly involved in pathways including ECM-receptor interaction, focal adhesion, cAMP signaling pathway, PI3K-AKT signaling pathway, and regulation of lipolysis in adipocytes. In the PPI network and coexpression network, five genes (CAV1, ITGA5, COL5A1, ABL1, and HSPG2) were identified as "real" Hub genes. Analysis of Hub gene expression by dataset revealed that the expression of these Hub genes was significantly higher in subcutaneous adipose tissue than in other tissues. In addition, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis based on tissue samples and adipocytes also confirmed the above results. Conclusion: In this study, five key genes related to subcutaneous adipose tissue were discovered, which laid a foundation for further study of the molecular regulation mechanism of subcutaneous adipose tissue development and adipose deposition.

RESUMO

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are important transcriptional regulatory RNA molecule that can regulate the transcription of downstream genes by competitive binding of miRNAs or coding proteins or by blocking mRNAs translation. Numerous studies have shown that circRNAs are extensively involved in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, gene transcription and signal transduction. Fat deposition and muscle development have important effects on beef traits. CircRNAs are involved in regulating bovine fat and muscle cells and are differentially expressed in the tissues composed of these cells, suggesting that circRNAs play an important role in regulating bovine fat formation and muscle development. This review describes differential expression of circRNAs in bovine fat and muscle tissues, research progress in understanding how circRNAs regulate the proliferation and differentiation of bovine fat and muscle cells through competing endogenous RNAs networks, and provide a reference for the subsequent research on the molecular mechanism of circRNAs in regulating fat deposition and muscle development in cattle.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the physio-chemical properties of a structural lipid (SL) obtained by the enzymatical incorporation of flaxseed oil into mutton tallow (MT). By measuring the melting point, colour, safety, fatty acids, apparent viscosity, shear stress and volatile compounds of the samples, the results showed that compared to MT, SL exhibited lower L∗(lightness) value, melting point, apparent viscosity and shear stress (p < 0.05). Noteworthy, the Saturated fatty acids (SFA)content of MT was reduced from 61.46% to 25.49% (p < 0.05), although SL was found to be more prone to oxidation during storage. The clearest discrepancy in volatile compounds was the increase of heterocyclic compounds in SL. In summary, improving the edible properties of animal fats by adding vegetable oils is an effective solution, and SL may have a great potential to be developed into a high-quality product with improved nutritional composition of animal fat.

RESUMO

Background: Substantive evidence has confirmed that nutrition state is associated with health risk and the onset of pubertal and metabolic profile. Due to heterogeneity, adipose tissues in different anatomical positions tend to show various metabolic mechanisms for nutrition. To date, the complicated molecular mechanisms of early calf-hood nutrition on bovine adipose tissue are still largely unknown. This study aimed to identify key genes and functionally enriched pathways associated with early calf-hood nutrition in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. Results: The RNA-seq data of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues of calves feeding on low and high dietary nutrition for more than 100 days were downloaded and analyzed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Two modules that positively associated with a low plane of nutrition diet and two modules with a high plane of nutrition diet were identified in the subcutaneous adipose tissue. The blue and yellow modules, most closely associated with low and high nutrition, were selected for the functional enrichment analysis and exploration of hub genes. The results showed that genes in the blue module were significantly enriched in pathways that related to fat metabolism, reproduction, and cell communication. Genes in the yellow module were enriched in pathways related to fat metabolism, reproduction, cell proliferation, and senescence. Meanwhile, the blue and brown modules in visceral adipose tissue were most closely associated with low and high nutrition, respectively. Notably, genes of the blue module were significantly enriched in pathways related to substance metabolism, and genes in the brown module were significantly enriched in energy metabolism and disease pathways. Finally, key genes in subcutaneous adipose tissue for low nutrition (PLCG1, GNA11, and ANXA5) and high nutrition (BUB1B, ASPM, RRM2, PBK, NCAPG, and MKI67), and visceral adipose tissue for low nutrition (RPS5, RPL4, RPL14, and RPLP0) and high nutrition (SDHA and AKT1) were obtained and verified. Conclusion: The study applied WGCNA to identify hub genes and functionally enriched pathways in subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue and provided a basis for studying the effect of early calf-hood nutrition on the two adipose tissue types.
