RESUMO

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system and is a leading cause of disability in young adults. Most therapeutic strategies are based on immunosuppressant effects. However, none of the drugs showed complete remission and may result in serious adverse events such as infection. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have gained much attention and are considered a potential therapeutic strategy owing to their immunomodulatory effects and neuroprotective functions. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a classical animal model for MS, is widely used to explore the efficacy and mechanism of MSC transplantation. This review summarises the therapeutic mechanism of MSCs in the treatment of EAE, including the effects on immune cells (T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, natural killer cells) and central nervous system-resident cells (astroglia, microglia, oligodendrocytes, neurons) as well as various strategies to improve the efficacy of MSCs in the treatment of EAE. Additionally, we discuss the clinical application of MSCs for MS patients as well as the challenges and prospects of MSC transplantation.

RESUMO

Co-parenting, the undertaking of parents working together to raise their children, is well documented as an important consideration of children's adjustment in Western countries, but we know less about the role of co-parenting in other cultures. In China, for example, co-parenting has only recently emerged in the social science literature. This study aimed to examine the cultural sensitivity of the CoPAFS instrument among Chinese Mandarin-speaking parents. CoPAFS is a 27-item survey designed to assess co-parenting across married and unmarried family structures originally developed in English. Data were collected from 729 Chinese-speaking and 348 English-speaking respondents. Factor analyses and confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the overall model fit for the translated co-parenting measure was acceptable in Mandarin. However, the five CoPAFS subscales (trust, respect, communication, acrimony, and value) differed across comparison groups, with communication notable for its lack of endorsement among Chinese couples. Implications of measuring co-parenting within Chinese families are offered.

RESUMO

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a supremely valuable resource for the development of drug discovery. Few methods are capable of hunting for potential molecule ligands from TCM towards more than one single protein target. In this study, a novel dual-target surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor was developed to perform targeted compound screening of two key proteins involved in the cellular invasion process of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2): the spike (S) protein receptor binding domain (RBD) and the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). The screening and identification of active compounds from six Chinese herbs were conducted taking into consideration the multi-component and multi-target nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Puerarin from Radix Puerariae Lobatae was discovered to exhibit specific binding affinity to both S protein RBD and ACE2. The results highlight the efficiency of the dual-target SPR system in drug screening and provide a novel approach for exploring the targeted mechanisms of active components from Chinese herbs for disease treatment.

RESUMO

Mutations in the gene encoding the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GCase) are responsible for Gaucher disease (GD) and are considered the strongest genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD). GCase deficiency leads to extensive accumulation of glucosylceramides (GCs) in cells and contributes to the neuropathology of GD, PD, and LBD by triggering chronic neuroinflammation. Here, we investigated the mechanisms by which GC accumulation induces neuroinflammation. We found that GC accumulation within microglia induced by pharmacological inhibition of GCase triggered STING-dependent inflammation, which contributed to neuronal loss both in vitro and in vivo. GC accumulation in microglia induced mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) leakage to the cytosol to trigger STING-dependent inflammation. Rapamycin, a compound that promotes lysosomal activity, improved mitochondrial function, thereby decreasing STING signaling. Furthermore, lysosomal damage caused by GC accumulation led to defects in the degradation of activated STING, further exacerbating inflammation mediated by microglia. Thus, limiting STING activity may be a strategy to suppress neuroinflammation caused by GCase deficiency.

RESUMO

Atherosclerosis is featured as chronic low-grade inflammation in the arteries, which leads to the formation of plaques rich in lipids. M2 macrophage-derived extracellular vesicles (M2EV) have significant potential for anti-atherosclerotic therapy. However, their therapeutic effectiveness has been hindered by their limited targeting capability in vivo. The objective of this study was to create the P-M2EV (platelet membrane-modified M2EV) using the membrane fusion technique in order to imitate the interaction between platelets and macrophages. P-M2EV exhibited excellent physicochemical properties, and microRNA (miRNA)-sequencing revealed that the extrusion process had no detrimental effects on miRNAs carried by the nanocarriers. Remarkably, miR-99a-5p was identified as the miRNA with the highest expression level, which targeted the mRNA of Homeobox A1 (HOXA1) and effectively suppressed the formation of foam cells in vitro. In an atherosclerotic low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (Ldlr-/-) mouse model, the intravenous injection of P-M2EV showed enhanced targeting and greater infiltration into atherosclerotic plaques compared to regular extracellular vesicles. Crucially, P-M2EV successfully suppressed the progression of atherosclerosis without causing systemic toxicity. The findings demonstrated a biomimetic platelet-mimic system that holds great promise for the treatment of atherosclerosis in clinical settings.

RESUMO

Objective: There is considerable debate as to whether the continuum of major psychiatric disorders exists and to what extent the boundaries extend. Converging evidence suggests that alterations in hippocampal volume are a common sign in psychiatric disorders; however, there is still no consensus on the nature and extent of hippocampal atrophy in schizophrenia (SZ), major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to verify the continuum of SZ - BD - MDD at the level of hippocampal subfield volume and to compare the volume differences in hippocampal subfields in the continuum. Methods: A total of 412 participants (204 SZ, 98 MDD, and 110 BD) underwent 3 T MRI scans, structured clinical interviews, and clinical scales. We segmented the hippocampal subfields with FreeSurfer 7.1.1 and compared subfields volumes across the three diagnostic groups by controlling for age, gender, education, and intracranial volumes. Results: The results showed a gradual increase in hippocampal subfield volumes from SZ to MDD to BD. Significant volume differences in the total hippocampus and 13 of 26 hippocampal subfields, including CA1, CA3, CA4, GC-ML-DG, molecular layer and the whole hippocampus, bilaterally, and parasubiculum in the right hemisphere, were observed among diagnostic groups. Medication treatment had the most effect on subfields of MDD compared to SZ and BD. Subfield volumes were negatively correlated with illness duration of MDD. Positive correlations were found between subfield volumes and drug dose in SZ and MDD. There was no significant difference in laterality between diagnostic groups. Conclusion: The pattern of hippocampal volume reduction in SZ, MDD and BD suggests that there may be a continuum of the three disorders at the hippocampal level. The hippocampus represents a phenotype that is distinct from traditional diagnostic strategies. Combined with illness duration and drug intervention, it may better reflect shared pathophysiology and mechanisms across psychiatric disorders.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is among the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders. The oral microbiota plays an important role in human health and may be altered by the presence of GERD. Here, we aimed to investigate the alterations of salivary microbiota in GERD patients. METHODS: We collected clinical information and salivary samples from 60 individuals. All participants underwent combined pH/impedance monitoring measurement and submitted samples for salivary microbiota sequencing. According to acid exposure time and DeMeester score, participants were divided into two groups: GERD + (Group G) and GERD - (Group C). RESULTS: There was no significant difference in alpha diversity between study groups. Regarding beta diversity, principal coordinate analysis plots indicated that the microbiota composition data of the participants were grouped within partial overlapping clusters. The statistical analysis of the distance matrices was performed using the Adonis test (p = 0.017). Based on linear discriminant analysis effect size, the relative abundances of the phylum Bacteroidetes, class Bacteroidia, order Bacteroidales, family Prevotellaceae, and genus unidentified_Prevotellaceae were enriched in Group G. Compared with Group C, the phylum Actinobacteria, classes unidentified_Actinobacteria and Bacilli, orders Micrococcales and Lactobacillales, families Micrococcaceae and Streptococcaceae, and genuses Rothia and Streptococcus were decreased in Group G. At the genus level, the abundances of Streptococcus and Rothia were negatively correlated with DeMeester score and acid exposure time. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed alterations of the salivary microbiota in GERD patients, suggesting that acid reflux changes the oral ecosystem.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is a promising strategy for those with peripheral artery disease. Macrophage-centered inflammation is intended to govern the deficiency of the angiogenic response after hindlimb ischemia. However, little is known about the mechanism of macrophage activation beyond signals from cytokines and chemokines. We sought to identify a novel mechanical signal from the ischemic microenvironment that provokes macrophages and the subsequent inflammatory cascade and to investigate the potential role of Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channels (Piezo) on macrophages during this process. METHODS: Myeloid cell-specific Piezo1 (Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1) knockout (Piezo1ΔMΦ) mice were generated by crossing Piezo1fl/fl (LysM-Cre-/-; Piezo1 flox/flox) mice with LysM-Cre transgenic mice to assess the roles of Piezo1 in macrophages after hindlimb ischemia. Furthermore, in vitro studies were carried out in bone marrow-derived macrophages to decipher the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: We found that tissue stiffness gradually increased after hindlimb ischemia, as indicated by Young's modulus. Compared to Piezo2, Piezo1 expression and activation were markedly upregulated in macrophages from ischemic tissues in concurrence with increased tissue stiffness. Piezo1ΔMΦ mice exhibited improved perfusion recovery by enhancing angiogenesis. Matrigel tube formation assays revealed that Piezo1 deletion promoted angiogenesis by enhancing FGF2 (fibroblast growth factor-2) paracrine signaling in macrophages. Conversely, activation of Piezo1 by increased stiffness or the agonist Yoda1 led to reduced FGF2 production in bone marrow-derived macrophages, which could be blocked by Piezo1 silencing. Mechanistically, Piezo1 mediated extracellular Ca2+ influx and activated Ca2+-dependent CaMKII (calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II)/ETS1 (ETS proto-oncogene 1) signaling, leading to transcriptional inactivation of FGF2. CONCLUSIONS: This study uncovers a crucial role of microenvironmental stiffness in exacerbating the macrophage-dependent deficient angiogenic response. Deletion of macrophage Piezo1 promotes perfusion recovery after hindlimb ischemia through CaMKII/ETS1-mediated transcriptional activation of FGF2. This provides a promising therapeutic strategy to enhance angiogenesis in ischemic diseases.

RESUMO

Parents play a key role in child CSA prevention, but the mechanisms underlying the intergenerational knowledge transmission are not fully understood. This study explores the role of two parenting practices - parent-child communication and parent's protective behavior - as mediating factors in the relation between parents' knowledge and their children's knowledge and skills. Four hundred and ten dyads of early adolescents and their mother or father from rural China participated in the study. Parents were surveyed on their knowledge, protective behaviors, and parent-child communication regarding CSA, while children answered questions on relevant knowledge and skills. Results revealed that parental knowledge was positively and significantly related to communication and protective behavior, protective behavior was positively related to children's knowledge and skills, but the coefficient between communication and children's knowledge and skills was insignificant. The findings highlight direct parental protection as one of the most important mechanism for intergenerational knowledge transmission.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the surgical amount of unilateral medial rectus recession and lateral rectus resection (RR) in patients with acute acquired comitant esotropia (AACE) versus common forms of esotropia and to provide dose-response reference for surgical planning in AACE. DESIGN: Retrospective study. PARTICIPANTS: Consecutive patients who underwent unilateral RR for AACE or common forms of esotropia correction from January 2018 to January 2022. Only patients who achieved motor and sensory success with a minimum follow-up of 3 months were analyzed. METHODS: Group differences in the amount of medial rectus (MR) recession and lateral rectus (LR) resection were analyzed using multivariate regression models. Surgical dose responses in AACE were analyzed using multivariable regression models. Regression models were performed with and without adjustment for clinical confounders. Piecewise analysis was used to detect segmented results. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Group difference in surgical amount and dose responses of unilateral RR in AACE. RESULTS: Fifty-four patients with AACE and 98 patients with common forms of esotropia were included. To correct comparable deviations, surgical amount performed was significant larger in AACE patients, with the adjusted group differences of 0.49 mm (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.34-0.65 mm; P < 0.001) in MR recession and 1.68 mm (95% CI, 1.25-2.11 mm; P < 0.001) in LR resection in patients with deviation < 40 prism diopters (Δ) and with a group difference of 1.22 mm (95% CI, 0.76-1.68 mm; P < 0.001) in LR resection in those with deviation ≥ 40 Δ. In AACE patients, in the adjusted model taking into account the intercept, dose responses of MR recession and LR resection in patients with deviation < 30 Δ were 5.11 Δ/mm (95% CI, 0.98-9.23 Δ/mm; P = 0.02) and 2.51 Δ/mm (95% CI, 0.57-4.45 Δ/mm; P = 0.02), respectively, and for those with deviation ≥ 30 Δ, the dose response of additional LR resection was 5.48 Δ/mm (95% CI, 4.56-6.40 Δ/mm; P < 0.001) to correct remaining deviation beyond 30 Δ. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide quantitative evidence that augmented-dose unilateral RR should be performed in AACE for favorable surgical outcomes. The new surgical dose calculation proposed provides reference for surgical planning. RESUMO

AIMS: To report the effect of two three-muscle surgeries, inferior rectus belly transposition plus augmented superior rectus transposition plus medial rectus recession (ISM) and modified vertical rectus belly transposition plus medial rectus recession (VM), in the management of large-angle esotropia in Chinese patients with chronic sixth nerve palsy. METHODS: Twenty-eight consecutive patients with large-angle esotropia ≥50Δ were prospectively enrolled and underwent either ISM or VM. Main outcomes included preoperative and postoperative deviation in primary position, abduction limitation and complications. Follow-up was at least 6 months. RESULTS: Of the included patients, 13 underwent ISM and 15 underwent VM. Preoperatively, ISM group displayed larger esotropia and more severe abduction limitation. 27 patients completed the follow-up. The postoperative horizontal deviation and abduction limitation were similar in both groups. At the last follow-up, ISM group demonstrated greater improvement of abduction limitation than VM group in both grading (group difference -2.1, p<0.001) and quantitation (group difference 2.6 mm, p=0.001). However, eight (30%) patients revealed an induced adduction limitation ≤-1. Of the 22 patients with unilateral palsy, more esotropia of 14.8Δ was corrected in ISM group, compared with VM group (p=0.003). Three patients (14%) developed vertical diplopia and three (14%) developed torsional diplopia. Unexpectedly, keratitis was observed in 4 of 27 (15%) patients, all with concurrent fifth and/or seventh nerve palsy. Three patients aggravated to corneal ulceration. CONCLUSIONS: Two three-muscle surgeries, ISM and VM were both effective for large-angle esotropia in Chinese patients with chronic sixth nerve palsy. However, attention should be paid to potential complications.

RESUMO

Weight-related school bullying and victimization have become important public health issues among adolescents around the world. This study aims to examine gender differences in the effects of Body Mass Index (BMI) on school bullying and victimization among secondary school students. This study conducted a survey among 2849 adolescents-1393 girls (48.9%) and 1456 boys (51.1%). The students were between 12 and 18 years of age and were recruited from ten secondary schools in 2019 in Suqian City in China. The study showed that overweight boys were more likely to bully others and be bullied by peers compared to normal weight boys. In contrast, overweight girls reported less bullying than normal-weight girls. No significant relationship was found between overweight and victimization among female students. The implications for comprehensive sexuality education practices are also discussed.

RESUMO

TrialDesign. Patients undergoing laminoplasty and laminectomy often experience severe postoperative pain. Local infiltration analgesia during spine surgery significantly reduces postoperative pain, which only upholds for a short time. Whether methylprednisolone and local anaesthetics are better than local anaesthetics alone in postoperative analgesia is yet to be determined. The primary aim of this research was the postoperative evaluation of efficacy and safety of methylprednisolone when used as an adjunct to local anaesthesia, ropivacaine, before wound closure after surgical procedures, laminoplasty or laminectomy. Methods. 132 patients were divided with a ratio of 1 : 1 into methylprednisolone-ropivacaine and ropivacaine alone groups. Every 30 ml of local infiltration solution consisted of 15 ml of 1% ropivacaine with 14 ml of saline along with 1 ml of 40 mg methylprednisolone and 15 ml of 1% ropivacaine with 15 ml of saline in methylprednisolone-ropivacaine group and ropivacaine group, respectively. The standardization of the study solution depended on the number of levels involved in surgery. Primary outcome was the 48-hour cumulative sufentanil demand. Results. Demographic characters and surgical variables among the groups were identical. The average 48-hour cumulative sufentanil demand was 32.5 ± 20.6 µg in the methylprednisolone-ropivacaine group and 50.9 ± 27.2 µg in the ropivacaine group (p < 0.001). The estimated median time of demand of the first analgesia via patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump was 2.5 hours and 2 hours in the methylprednisolone-ropivacaine group and the ropivacaine group, respectively (hazard ratio (HR) was 0.53, with 95% Cl 0.33 to 0.87 and Log-rank of p = 0.0019). Conclusion. The infiltration of methylprednisolone as adjunct ropivacaine before wound closure is a safe and efficient strategy for pain management following laminoplasty or laminectomy.

RESUMO

Homophobic teasing or name-calling, one form of school-related gender-based violence, refers to the use of derogatory language or actions towards sexual- or gender-nonconforming individuals. Research in the Global North has indicated that it is highly prevalent among adolescents, and is associated with a broad range of negative outcomes for both victims and perpetrators. However, such behaviors remain understudied in China. Using a cross-sectional design, the present study investigated the structural relations between homophobic teasing, bullying perpetration, and gender role attitudes among 1915 Chinese high school students. The results showed that 11.5% of the participants had perpetrated such harassment in the past month. Structural equation analyses revealed that bullying perpetration predicted more teasing involvement, and that the relationship was partially mediated by gender role attitudes among both female and male youth. The moderation effect of sex was found only for the direct effect of bullying; such that males who engaged in bullying were more likely to perpetrate homophobic teasing than females. These findings suggest the need for further examination and effective interventions and preventions for the behavior in Chinese contexts.

RESUMO

This study investigated the association between gender role attitudes, perceived friend support, and school bullying among male adolescents from 11 schools in two cities in China. A total of 3172 Chinese adolescents between 12 and 20 years of age (48.80% girls and 51.20% boys) completed questionnaires that included measures of bullying, gender role attitudes, and perceived social support. In terms of outcome measures, the Chinese version of the Illinois Bully Scale (IBS), Attitudes toward Women Scale for Adolescents (AWSA), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used to assess bullying perpetration, gender role attitudes, and perceived friend support, respectively. Based on masculinity theories and the stress-buffering theory, the study found that male adolescents held more traditional gender role attitudes (t = 30.78, p < 0.001) and reported higher prevalence of bullying behaviors (36.02%) than girls (31.20%). In addition, boys' bullying behaviors were significantly predicted by gender role attitudes through perceived friend support. That is, male youth with more conservative gender role attitudes reported less perceived friend support (adjusted OR = 1.055; SE = 0.013), which elevated their risks of bullying perpetration (adjusted OR = 2.082; SE = 0.302). These findings have critical implications for bullying intervention and prevention through gender equity education.

RESUMO

Importance: Both vertical rectus belly transposition (VRBT) and superior rectus transposition (SRT) can be performed simultaneously with ipsilateral medial rectus recession (MRc) and have been shown to be effective for chronic sixth nerve palsy. However, it is unclear whether VRBT is superior to SRT in correcting esotropia. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of modified VRBT plus MRc (mVRBT-MRc) vs augmented SRT plus MRc (aSRT-MRc) in Chinese patients with chronic sixth nerve palsy. Design, Setting, and Participants: This parallel-design, double-masked, single-center, randomized clinical trial was conducted from January 15, 2018, to May 24, 2021. The follow-up visits were scheduled at 1 month and 6 months. Eligible Chinese participants with unilateral chronic sixth nerve palsy were randomly assigned to receive either mVRBT-MRc (VRBT group) or aSRT-MRc (SRT group). Interventions: mVRBT-MRc or aSRT-MRc. Main Outcomes and Measures: Change of horizontal deviation in primary position from baseline to 6 months. Results: Of the total 25 eligible participants, the mean (SD) age was 45.4 (12.6) years, with 10 male participants (40%) and 15 female participants (60%). Thirteen participants (52%) were randomly assigned to the VRBT group, and 12 (48%) were randomly assigned to the SRT group. At baseline, the mean (SD) horizontal deviation was 65.7 (10.8) prism diopters (Δ) in the VRBT group and 60.5Δ(14.1Δ) in the SRT group. Similar amounts of MRc were performed in both groups. At 6 months, the horizontal deviation changed from baseline by 66.3Δ in the VRBT group and by 51.5Δ in the SRT group. The adjusted group difference was 10.9Δ (95% CI, 5.3Δ-16.6Δ), favoring the VRBT group (P = .001). Four times as many participants corrected more than 60Δ with mVRBT-MRc compared with aSRT-MRc. The group difference of the improvement of abduction limitation was -0.2 (95% CI, -0.8 to 0.5; P = .64). Although there was a higher proportion of undercorrection in the SRT group (difference, 45%; 95% CI, 16%-75%; P = .01), no differences were identified for other suboptimal outcomes between groups. Conclusions and Relevance: Compared with aSRT-MRc, mVRBT-MRc showed better effect in correcting esotropia with no differences detected for other suboptimal outcomes. mVRBT-MRc may be a promising alternative surgical procedure for chronic sixth nerve palsy, particularly for large esotropia of more than 60Δ, if these results are confirmed in larger, diverse cohorts with longer follow-up. Trial Registration: ChiCTR Identifier: ChiCTR-INR-17013705.

RESUMO

Xiang pig (XP) is one of the best-known indigenous pig breeds in China, which is characterized by its small body size, strong disease resistance, high adaptability, favorite meat quality, small litter sizes, and early sexual maturity. However, the genomic evidence that links these unique traits of XP is still poorly understood. To identify the genomic signatures of selection in XP, we performed whole-genome resequencing on 25 unrelated individual XPs. We obtained 876.70 Gb of raw data from the genomic libraries. The LD analysis showed that the lowest level of linkage disequilibrium was observed in Xiang pig. Comparative genomic analysis between XPs and other breeds including Tibetan, Meishan, Duroc and Landrace revealed 3062, 1228, 907 and 1519 selected regions, respectively. The genes identified in selected regions of XPs were associated with growth and development processes (IGF1R, PROP1, TBX19, STAC3, RLF, SELENOM, MSTN), immunity and disease resistance (ZCCHC2, SERPINB2, ADGRE5, CYP7B1, STAT6, IL2, CD80, RHBDD3, PIK3IP1), environmental adaptation (NR2E1, SERPINB8, SERPINB10, SLC26A7, MYO1A, SDR9C7, UVSSA, EXPH5, VEGFC, PDE1A), reproduction (CCNB2, TRPM6, EYA3, CYP7B1, LIMK2, RSPO1, ADAM32, SPAG16), meat quality traits (DECR1, EWSR1), and early sexual maturity (TAC3). Through the absolute allele frequency difference (ΔAF) analysis, we explored two population-specific missense mutations occurred in NR6A1 and LTBP2 genes, which well explained that the vertebrae numbers of Xiang pigs were less than that of the European pig breeds. Our results indicated that Xiang pigs were less affected by artificial selection than the European and Meishan pig breeds. The selected candidate genes were mainly involved in growth and development, disease resistance, reproduction, meat quality, and early sexual maturity. This study provided a list of functional candidate genes, as well as a number of genetic variants, which would provide insight into the molecular basis for the unique traits of Xiang pig.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report the surgical effects of a combination treatment comprising the lateral rectus belly transposition (LRBT) procedure, without muscle splitting or disinsertion, and ipsilateral antagonist recession for vertical rectus palsy. METHODS: The medical records of consecutive patients who underwent the LRBT procedure between 2017 and 2020 were reviewed. Preoperative and postoperative deviation in primary position, preoperative and postoperative scale of duction of the palsied muscle, any induced horizontal or torsional deviation, and other complications were collected. RESULTS: Thirteen patients were identified: 10 with inferior rectus palsy and 3 with superior rectus palsy. The mean postoperative follow-up time was 20.4 ± 8.0 months. Eleven patients (84.6%) underwent simultaneous recession of the ipsilateral antagonist muscle of the palsied vertical rectus. After surgery, the mean vertical deviation improved from 31.4 ± 16.4 to 1.9 ± 3.6 prism diopters (PD) (P < .001). The mean vertical duction limitation of the palsied muscle improved from -2.7 ± 0.6 to -0.6 ± 0.5 (P = .001). In one patient, the scleral fixation suture was removed due to continuous reverse vertical diplopia. The total success rate was 76.9%. No induced horizontal deviation was noted. Anterior segment ischemia or other severe surgical complications did not occur. CONCLUSIONS: The LRBT procedure can be effective, safe, and reversible in patients with vertical rectus palsy. It allows for the option of simultaneous ipsilateral antagonist recession, and it is especially valuable in patients whose vertical duction deficiency is worse in abduction but mild in adduction. RESUMO

Although there exists a growing body of research on female same-sex intimate partner violence (FSSIPV) as well as bidirectional intimate partner violence (BIPV) among lesbian women, much of this literature focuses on the IPV experience of women living in Western societies such as the United States. The current study represents the very first to explore BIPV among lesbian women in China. In this study, we analyze a survey sample of 225 self-identified lesbian women in China to examine FSSBIPV patterns, pattern-specific rates, and risk factors of FSSBIPV. Using the Latent Class Analysis technique, we discover three main patterns of partner abuse, including bidirectional psychological violence (60%), bidirectional violence multiple types with physical abuse (79.1%), and minimal violence (20.9%). Logistic regressions show that there is no significant demographic, socioeconomic, or attitudinal difference between the bidirectional psychological violence group and the minimal violence group while being younger, cohabitating, and holding pro-IPV attitudes significantly predicted higher odds of experiencing multiple types of bidirectional violence. Contributions to the literature, as well as policy implications, are also discussed.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: School bullying is a serious social and public health problem. This article aims to explore the association between experiences of childhood abuse and involvement in school bullying, especially considering the mediating effects of depression. METHODS: The sample of this study was 3059 students (1584 males and 1475 females) aged from 12 to 20, in eleven Chinese secondary schools, which included six middle schools, four high schools, and one vocational high school in both urban and rural areas. The multinomial logit regression and linear regression were conducted by the two gender groups, to determine the mediating effect of depression in the association between child abuse experiences and involvement in school bullying. RESULTS: This study indicated that female students were less likely to be involved in school bullying. Male students were more represented in the bully-victim group and experienced more physical and mental abuse during childhood. Depression was a mediator between childhood abuse and involvement in school bullying. Nevertheless, there was a gender difference in that depression fully mediated the relationship between the two variables among female students, while it only partially meditated such a relationship for male students. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that more school-based service interventions and evidence-based research are needed to more thoroughly investigate school bullying and its predictors in China.
