BACKGROUND: Blueberry fruit exhibit atypical climacteric ripening with a non-auto-catalytic increase in ethylene coincident with initiation of ripening. Further, application of ethephon, an ethylene-releasing plant growth regulator, accelerates ripening by increasing the proportion of ripe (blue) fruit as compared to the control treatment. To investigate the mechanistic role of ethylene in regulating blueberry ripening, we performed transcriptome analysis on fruit treated with ethephon, an ethylene-releasing plant growth regulator. RESULTS: RNA-Sequencing was performed on two sets of rabbiteye blueberry ('Powderblue') fruit: (1) fruit from divergent developmental stages; and (2) fruit treated with ethephon, an ethylene-releasing compound. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from divergent developmental stages clustered into nine groups, among which cluster 1 displayed reduction in expression during ripening initiation and was enriched with photosynthesis related genes, while cluster 7 displayed increased expression during ripening and was enriched with aromatic-amino acid family catabolism genes, suggesting stimulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis. More DEGs were apparent at 1 day after ethephon treatment suggesting its early influence during ripening initiation. Overall, a higher number of genes were downregulated in response to ethylene. Many of these overlapped with cluster 1 genes, indicating that ethylene-mediated downregulation of photosynthesis is an important developmental event during the ripening transition. Analyses of DEGs in response to ethylene also indicated interplay among phytohormones. Ethylene positively regulated abscisic acid (ABA), negatively regulated jasmonates (JAs), and influenced auxin (IAA) metabolism and signaling genes. Phytohormone quantification supported these effects of ethylene, indicating coordination of blueberry fruit ripening by ethylene. CONCLUSION: This study provides insights into the role of ethylene in blueberry fruit ripening. Ethylene initiates blueberry ripening by downregulating photosynthesis-related genes. Also, ethylene regulates phytohormone-metabolism and signaling related genes, increases ABA, and decreases JA concentrations. Together, these results indicate that interplay among multiple phytohormones regulates the progression of ripening, and that ethylene is an important coordinator of such interactions during blueberry fruit ripening.

Electron-coupled-proton buffers (ECPBs) store and deliver protons and electrons in a reversible fashion. We have recently reported an ECPB based on Cu and a redox-active ligand that promoted 4H+/4e- reversible transformations (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, 144, 16905). Herein, we report a series of Cu-based ECPBs in which the ability of these to accept and/or donate H• equivalents can be tuned via ligand modification. The thermochemistry of the 4H+/4e- ECPB equilibrium was determined using open-circuit potential measurements. The reactivity of the ECPBs against proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reagents was also analyzed, and the results obtained were rationalized based on the thermochemical parameters. Experimental and computational analysis of the thermochemistry of the H+/e- transfers involved in the 4H+/4e- ECPB transformations found substantial differences between the stepwise (namely, BDFE1, BDFE2, BDFE3, and BDFE4) and average bond dissociation free energy values (BDFEavg.). Our analysis suggests that this "redox unleveling" is critical to promoting the disproportionation and ligand-exchange reactions involved in the 4H+/4e- ECPB equilibria. The difference in BDFEavg. within the series of Cu-based ECPBs was found to arise from a substantial change in the redox potential (E1/2) upon modification of the ligand scaffold, which is not fully compensated for by a change in the acidity/basicity (pKa), suggesting "thermochemical decompensation".

This article focuses on a range of non-pharmacological strategies for managing sarcopenia in chronic diseases, including exercise, dietary supplements, traditional Chinese exercise, intestinal microecology, and rehabilitation therapies for individuals with limited limb movement. By analyzing multiple studies, the article aims to summarize the available evidence to manage sarcopenia in individuals with chronic diseases. The results strongly emphasize the role of resistance training in addressing chronic diseases and secondary sarcopenia. Maintaining the appropriate frequency and intensity of resistance training can help prevent muscle atrophy and effectively reduce inflammation. Although aerobic exercise has limited ability to improve skeletal muscle mass, it does have some positive effects on physical function. Building upon this, the article explores the potential benefits of combined training approaches, highlighting their helpfulness for overall quality of life. Additionally, the article also highlights the importance of dietary supplements in combating muscle atrophy in chronic diseases. It focuses on the importance of protein intake, supplements rich in essential amino acids and omega-3, as well as sufficient vitamin D to prevent muscle atrophy. Combining exercise with dietary supplements appears to be an effective strategy for preventing sarcopenia, although the optimal dosage and type of supplement remain unclear. Furthermore, the article explores the potential benefits of intestinal microecology in sarcopenia. Probiotics, prebiotics, and bacterial products are suggested as new treatment options for sarcopenia. Additionally, emerging therapies such as whole body vibration training, blood flow restriction, and electrical stimulation show promise in treating sarcopenia with limited limb movement. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into non-pharmacological strategies for managing sarcopenia in individuals with chronic diseases. It emphasizes the importance of a holistic and integrated approach that incorporates exercise, nutrition, and multidisciplinary interventions, which have the potential to promote health in the elderly population. Future research should prioritize high-quality randomized controlled trials and utilize wearable devices, smartphone applications, and other advanced surveillance methods to investigate the most effective intervention strategies for sarcopenia associated with different chronic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Prior scholarship has highlighted the importance of marriage for cognition. However, little research has considered how cognition-related concerns may impact marriage. In this study, we examine how aging couples view each other's memory and worry about their potential development of dementia in the future. Additionally, we investigate whether these cognition-related concerns may strain marriage, and how these dynamics differ for men and women in same- and different-sex marriages. METHODS: We used two waves of dyadic data from the Health and Relationships Project (HARP; 2015-2022), including 594 respondents from 297 same- and different-sex married couples (aged 41-71 at Time 2). We employed the Actor- Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) to explore associations between actor and partner reports of memory and dementia worry with marital strain. RESULTS: Men and women in same- and different-sex marriages were equally likely to report worries about their own potential development of dementia. However, women reported more concerns about their spouse developing dementia in the future than men did, regardless of whether they were married to a man or a woman. Both partners' reports of memory and dementia worry played a complex role in influencing marital strain, with variations observed across couple types. DISCUSSION: Concerns about cognitive decline and dementia are common in older populations, and for married couples, spouses have concerns about their own memory as well as that of their partner. Our findings identified the significance of concerns about a spouse's memory on marital dynamics among aging couples.

Poor adherence to antidepressants increases the risk of suicide, while greater mental health awareness promotes seeking appropriate treatment, highlighting the urgent need to assess depression knowledge. This study aimed to develop and assess the psychometrics of a Geriatric Depression Knowledge Scale (GDKS) for older adults with depression. In phase 1, 18 items were generated through an intensive literature review and clinical experiences. Phase 2 involved assessing content and face validities of the GDKS. In phase 3, a cross-sectional study (206 older adults, 100 psychiatric professionals) determined construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. GDKS demonstrated excellent content and face validity. Older participants scored significantly lower than psychiatric professionals, confirming excellent construct validity. Reliability was evident with a Kuder-Richardson formula 20 score of 0.72 and a 4-week test-retest reliability of 0.86 (p < 0.01). The GDKS provides a reliable tool for evaluating geriatric depression knowledge in psychiatric outpatient settings.

This study involved direct doping of In2O3 into silicon carbide (SiC) powder, resulting in 8.0 at% In-doped SiC powder. Subsequently, heating at 500 °C was performed to form a target, followed by the utilization of electron beam (e-beam) technology to deposit the In-doped SiC thin films with the thickness of approximately 189.8 nm. The first breakthrough of this research was the successful deposition of using e-beam technology. The second breakthrough involved utilizing various tools to analyze the physical and electrical properties of In-doped SiC thin films. Hall effect measurement was used to measure the resistivity, mobility, and carrier concentration and confirm its n-type semiconductor nature. The uniform dispersion of In ions in SiC was as confirmed by electron microscopy energy-dispersive spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses. The Tauc Plot method was employed to determine the Eg values of pure SiC and In-doped SiC thin films. Semiconductor parameter analyzer was used to measure the conductivity and the I-V characteristics of devices in In-doped SiC thin films. Furthermore, the third finding demonstrated that In2O3-doped SiC thin films exhibited remarkable current density. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Gaussian-resolved spectra further confirmed a significant relationship between conductivity and oxygen vacancy concentration. Lastly, depositing these In-doped SiC thin films onto p-type silicon substrates etched with buffered oxide etchant resulted in the formation of heterojunction p-n junction. This junction exhibited the rectifying characteristics of a diode, with sample current values in the vicinity of 102 mA, breakdown voltage at approximately -5.23 V, and open-circuit voltage around 1.56 V. This underscores the potential of In-doped SiC thin films for various semiconductor devices.

Brain structural circuitry shapes a richly patterned functional synchronization, supporting for complex cognitive and behavioural abilities. However, how coupling of structural connectome (SC) and functional connectome (FC) develops and its relationships with cognitive functions and transcriptomic architecture remain unclear. We used multimodal magnetic resonance imaging data from 439 participants aged 5.7 to 21.9 years to predict functional connectivity by incorporating intracortical and extracortical structural connectivity, characterizing SC-FC coupling. Our findings revealed that SC-FC coupling was strongest in the visual and somatomotor networks, consistent with evolutionary expansion, myelin content, and functional principal gradient. As development progressed, SC-FC coupling exhibited heterogeneous alterations dominated by an increase in cortical regions, broadly distributed across the somatomotor, frontoparietal, dorsal attention, and default mode networks. Moreover, we discovered that SC-FC coupling significantly predicted individual variability in general intelligence, mainly influencing frontoparietal and default mode networks. Finally, our results demonstrated that the heterogeneous development of SC-FC coupling is positively associated with genes in oligodendrocyte-related pathways and negatively associated with astrocyte-related genes. This study offers insight into the maturational principles of SC-FC coupling in typical development.

This study investigates the distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) within the Beijing water system, specifically examining the Yongding, Chaobai, Beiyun, Jiyun, and Daqing rivers. Results indicate that the Beiyun River exhibits the highest REE concentrations, ranging from 35.95 to 59.78 µg/mL, while the Daqing River shows the lowest concentrations, ranging from 15.79 to 17.48 µg/mL. LREEs (La to Nd) predominate with a total concentration of 23.501 µg/mL, leading to a notable LREE/HREE ratio of 7.901. Positive Ce anomalies (0.70-1.11) and strong positive Eu anomalies (1.38-2.49) were observed. The study suggests that the Beijing water system's REEs may originate from geological and anthropogenic sources, such as mining and industrial activities in neighboring regions, including Inner Mongolia. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring and effective water management strategies to address REE-related environmental concerns.

Upon uptake of toxins, insects launch a detoxification program. This program is deployed in multiple organs and cells to raise their tolerance against the toxin. The molecular mechanisms of this program inside the insect body have been studied and understood in detail. Here, we report on a yet unexplored extra-corporeal detoxification of insecticides in Drosophila melanogaster. Wild-type D. melanogaster incubated with DDT, a contact insecticide, in a closed environment died as expected. However, incubation of a second cohort in the same environment after removal of the dead flies was not lethal. The effect was significantly lower if the flies of the two cohorts were unrelated. Incubation assays with Chlorpyrifos, another contact insecticide, yielded identical results, while incubation assays with Chlorantraniliprole, again a contact insecticide, was toxic for the second cohort of flies. A cohort of flies incubated in a DDT environment after an initial incubation of a honeybee survived treatment. Together, our data suggest that insects including Apis mellifera and D. melanogaster have the capacity to modify their proximate environment. Consequently, in their ecological niche, following individuals might be saved from intoxication thereby facilitating colonisation of an attractive site.

Given the escalating impact of climate change on agriculture and food security, gaining insights into the evolutionary dynamics of climatic adaptation and uncovering climate-adapted variation empower the breeding of climate-resilience crops to face future climate change. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa subsp. sativa), the queen of forages with remarkable adaptability across diverse global environments, is an excellent model for investigating species' responses to climate change. We conducted population genomic analyses to unravel alfalfa's climatic adaptation and genetic susceptibility to future climate change, utilizing genome resequencing data from 702 accessions of 24 Medicago species. We found that interspecific genetic exchange has fueled the gene pool of alfalfa, particularly enriching defense and stress response genes. Inter-subspecific introgression between Medicago sativa subsp. falcata (subsp. falcata) and alfalfa not only aids alfalfa's climatic adaptation but also introduces genetic burden. A total of 1671 genes were associated with climatic adaptation, and 5.7% of them were introgression from subsp. falcata. Integrating climate-associated variants and climate data, we identified vulnerable populations to future climate change, particularly in higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere, serving as a clarion call for targeted conservation initiatives and breeding efforts. Moreover, we unveil pre-adaptive populations demonstrating heightened resilience to climate fluctuations, illuminating a pathway for future breeding strategies. This study enhances our understanding of alfalfa's local adaptation and facilitates breeding of climate-resilient cultivars, contributing to effective agricultural strategies facing future climate change.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Acute gouty arthritis (AGA) is characterized by a rapid inflammatory reaction caused by the build-up of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in the tissues surrounding the joints. This condition often associated with hyperuricemia (HUA), is distinguished by its symptoms of intense pain, active inflammation, and swelling of the joints. Traditional approaches in AGA management often fall short of desired outcomes in clinical settings. However, recent ethnopharmacological investigations have been focusing on the potential of Traditional Herbal Medicine (THM) in various forms, exploring their therapeutic impact and targets in AGA treatment. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review briefly summarizes the current potential pharmacological mechanisms of THMs - including active ingredients, extracts, and prescriptions -in the treatment of AGA, and discusses the relevant potential mechanisms and molecular targets in depth. The objective of this study is to offer extensive information and a reference point for the exploration of targeted AGA treatment using THMs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review obtained scientific publications focused on in vitro and in vivo studies of anti-AGA THMs conducted between 2013 and 2023. The literature was collected from various journals and electronic databases, including PubMed, Elsevier, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The retrieval and analysis of relevant articles were guided by keywords such as "acute gouty arthritis and Chinese herbal medicine," "acute gouty arthritis herbal prescription," "acute gouty arthritis and immune cells," "acute gouty arthritis and inflammation," "acute gouty arthritis and NOD-like receptor thermoprotein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3)," "acute gouty arthritis and miRNA," and "acute gouty arthritis and oxidative stress." RESULTS: We found that AGA has a large number of therapeutic targets, highlighting the effectiveness the potential of THMs in AGA treatment through in vitro and in vivo studies. THMs and their active ingredients can mitigate AGA symptoms through a variety of therapeutic targets, such as influencing macrophage polarization, neutrophils, T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and addressing factors like inflammation, NLRP3 inflammasome, signaling pathways, oxidative stress, and miRNA multi-target interactions. The anti-AGA properties of THMs, including their active components and prescriptions, were systematically summarized and categorized based on their respective therapeutic targets. CONCLUSION: phenolic, flavonoid, terpenoid and alkaloid compounds in THMs are considered the key ingredients to improve AGA. THMs and their active ingredients achieve enhanced efficacy through interactions with multiple targets, of which NLRP3 is a main therapeutic target. Nonetheless, given the intricate composition of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), additional research is required to unravel the underlying mechanisms and molecular targets through which THMs alleviate AGA.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy and its incidence is increasing. It is currently mainly treated by clinical chemotherapy, but chemoresistance remains poorly understood. Prefolded proteins 4 (PFDN4) are molecular chaperone complexes that bind to newly synthesized polypeptides and allow them to fold correctly to stabilize protein formation. This study aimed to investigate the role of PFDN4 in chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer. Our study found that PFDN4 was highly expressed in breast cancer compared to normal tissues and was statistically significantly associated with stage, nodal status, subclasses (luminal, HER2 positive and triple negative), triple-negative subtype and disease-specific survival by TCGA database analysis. CRISPR knockout of PFDN4 inhibited the growth of 89% of breast cancer cell lines, and the triple-negative cell line exhibited a stronger inhibitory effect than the non-triple-negative cell line. High PFDN4 expression was associated with poor overall survival in chemotherapy and resistance to doxorubicin and paclitaxel through the CREBP1/AURKA pathway in the triple-negative MDAMB231 cell line. This study provides insightful evidence for the value of PFDN4 in poor prognosis and chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer patients.

The implantation of human embryos is a complex process involving various cytokines and receptors expressed by both endometrium and embryos. However, the role of cytokines produced by a single embryo in successful implantation is largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of IL-1ß expressed in a single-embryo-conditioned medium (ECM) in embryo implantation. Seventy samples of single ECM were analyzed by a specially designed magnetic-beads-based microfluidic chip from 15 women. We discovered that IL-1ß level increased as the embryo developed, and the difference was significant. In addition, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves analysis showed a higher chance of pregnancy when the IL-1ß level on day 5 ECM was below 79.37 pg/mL and the difference between day 5 and day 3 was below 24.90 pg/mL. Our study discovered a possible association between embryonic proteomic expression and successful implantation, which might facilitate single-embryo transfer in the future by helping clinicians identify the embryo with the greatest implantation potential.

Cornus officinalis, a medicinal and edible plant known for its liver-nourishing properties, has shown promise in inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), crucial indicators of hepatic fibrosis, especially when processed by high pressure wine steaming (HPWS). Herein, this study aims to investigate the regulatory effects of cornus officinalis, both in its raw and HPWS forms, on inflammation and apoptosis in liver fibrosis and their underlying mechanisms. In vivo liver fibrosis models were established by subcutaneous injection of CCl4, while in vitro HSCs were exposed to transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß). These findings demonstrated that cornus officinalis with HPWS conspicuously ameliorated histopathological injury, reduced the release of proinflammatory factors, and decreased collagen deposition in CCl4-induced rats compared to its raw form. Utilizing ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) combined with network analysis, we identified that the pharmacological effects of the changed components of cornus officinalis before and after HPWS, primarily centered on the adenosine phosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. Of note, cornus officinalis activated AMPK and Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3), promoting the apoptosis of activated HSCs through the caspase cascade by regulating caspase3, caspase6 and caspase9. siRNA experiments showed that cornus officinalis could regulate AMPK activity and its mediated-apoptosis through SIRT3. In conclusion, cornus officinalis exhibited the ability to reduce inflammation and apoptosis, with the SIRT3-AMPK signaling pathway identified as a potential mechanism underlying the synergistic effect of cornus officinalis with HPWS on anti-liver fibrosis.

Purpose: To develop an individualized predictive model for postoperative recurrent lumbar disc herniation (PRLDH) in patients undergoing percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal discectomy (PETD) by considering postoperative activity factors. Patients and Methods: Retrospectively collected data from 612 LDH patients who underwent PETD in our institution from January 2017 to June 2023. They were divided into a training group (429 cases) and a validation group (183 cases). Lasso regression (Model 1) and random forest (Model 2) were applied for variable selection in the training group. The two models were compared in terms of discrimination (the area under curve, AUC), calibration (calibration curve), and clinical utility (decision curve analysis, DCA). Akaike information criterion (AIC) was used for model comparison, and internal validation employed 1000 times Bootstrap + 10-fold cross-validation. Finally, a Nomogram was constructed to display the results and uploaded to the web version. Results: Among 612 treated LDH patients, 66 (10.78%) developed PRLDH. Model 1, superior in AUC, calibration, DCA, and AIC over Model 2, was chosen as the predictive model. Logistic regression in the training group identified BMI, smoking, activity level score, time to first ambulation, diabetes, Modic change, and Pfirrmann grade as independent predictors of PRLDH. Model 1 exhibited a training group AUC of 0.813 (95% CI 0.753-0.872) and a validation group AUC of 0.868 (95% CI 0.773-0.962). At a Youden index of 0.50, sensitivity was 0.73, specificity was 0.77. Internal validation (1000 times Bootstrap + 10-fold cross-validation) for the training group showed accuracy of 0.889, kappa consistency of 0.112, and AUC of 0.757. The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit tests indicated good discriminative ability for Model 1 in both the training (χ2=2.895, P=0.941) and validation groups (χ2=8.197, P=0.414). Conclusion: The Nomogram predictive model, developed based on postoperative activity factors in this study, demonstrates excellent predictive capability, facilitating risk assessment for the occurrence of PRLDH after PETD.

Activated carbon-supported CuO catalysts were prepared by an ammonia evaporation method and applied to catalyze the selective oxidation of glycerol to lactic acid. The effects of CuO loadings on the structure and catalytic performance of the catalyst were investigated. Results showed that CuO could be dispersed uniformly on the surface of activated carbon, promoting the increase of the reaction rate and accelerating the glycerol conversion significantly. As CuO loadings increased, the rate of glycerol consumption and yield to lactic acid was increased. However, too high CuO loadings would destroy the original pore structure of activated carbon and aggravate the agglomeration of CuO, resulting in a decrease in the catalytic performance of the catalyst. The best catalytic performance was obtained over 10% CuO/AC when the reaction temperature was 190 °C and the reaction time was 5 h. At this point, the selectivity to lactic acid reached 92.61%. In addition, power-function type reaction kinetic equations were used to evaluate the effect of glycerol and NaOH concentrations and the reaction temperature on the oxidation of glycerol to lactic acid over 10% CuO/AC. The activation energy of the reaction is 134.39 kJ·mol-1, which is higher than that using single CuO as the catalyst. This indicates that CuO/AC is more temperature-sensitive than CuO and can probably achieve a higher lactic acid yield at high temperatures. At the same time, it is indicated that CuO supported on activated carbon can enhance the catalytic activity of CuO effectively.

Lung cancer poses a global health challenge, necessitating advanced diagnostics for improved outcomes. Intensive efforts are ongoing to pinpoint early detection biomarkers, such as genomic variations and DNA methylation, to elevate diagnostic precision. We conducted long-read sequencing on cancerous and adjacent non-cancerous tissues from a patient with lung adenocarcinoma. We identified somatic structural variations (SVs) specific to lung cancer by integrating data from various SV calling methods and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) that were distinct between these two tissue samples, revealing a unique methylation pattern associated with lung cancer. This study discovered over 40,000 somatic SVs and over 180,000 DMRs linked to lung cancer. We identified approximately 700 genes of significant relevance through comprehensive analysis, including genes intricately associated with many lung cancers, such as NOTCH1, SMOC2, CSMD2, and others. Furthermore, we observed that somatic SVs and DMRs were substantially enriched in several pathways, such as axon guidance signaling pathways, which suggests a comprehensive multi-omics impact on lung cancer progression across various biological investigation levels. These datasets can potentially serve as biomarkers for early lung cancer detection and may hold significant value in clinical diagnosis and treatment applications.

High-grade hemorrhoids are usually recommended to receive operational treatments. However, these traditional surgeries are associated with severe postoperative pain. A procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids (PPH), a circular staple device, has been developed to improve short-term outcomes, including reducing the severity of postoperative pain. PPH, compared to conventional surgery, has been associated with the incidence of anatomical anal stenosis. The causes of stenosis after PPH are not yet clear. We first analyzed the complications of our patients with PPH, and then developed a rat model to verify the tension force of PPH using Hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence staining. Our clinical data showed that PPH significantly improved postoperative pain, but that it resulted in higher incidences of complications, including anal stenosis, than hemorrhoidectomy. We simulated the status of PPH and developed a rat model to verify PPH's tension force, including the scarring area and the deposition of proinflammatory factors, angiogenic factors, and fibrotic factors. The tension wound histological data showed more extensive granulation tissue and inflammatory cell infiltration and a thicker epidermis than the control group on day 12 post-operation and tension treatment. In addition to IL-1ß and IL-10 cytokines on day 3 and IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-10 cytokines on day 12 post-operation in the tension group, two angiogenic factors, CD31 and VEGF-A, were found to have a more significant expression on day 7 post-operation in the tension group. The mean scar area was larger and the distribution of fibrotic proteins (collagen 1, α-SMA, CTGF, and MMP2) in the tension group was significantly broader than in the control on day 12 post-operation and tension treatment. Based on the findings of our animal model, the development of a lesser tensile force for PPH to decrease the deposition of proinflammatory factors, angiogenic factors, and fibrotic factors is urgently required.

Various approaches have been taken over the years to quantify event-related potential (ERP) responses and these approaches may vary in their utility connecting empirical research and scientific claims. In this work we compared different quantification methods as well as the influence of three reference methods (linked mastoids, average reference, and current source density) on the resulting ERP amplitude. We use the experimental effects and effect sizes (Cohen's d) to evaluate the different methodological variants and we calculate intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). In addition, the bootstrapped standard error of the means (SME, Luck et al., 2021), which was recently suggested as a quality criterion for ERP research, is used for this purpose. Our example for an ERP is the feedback-related negativity (FRN) to feedback about trustee behavior in a trust game with participants in the trustor position. We found that the quantification methods concerning the FRN influenced the absolute value of condition effects in the experimental paradigm. Yet, the patterns of effects were detected by all chosen methods, except for the 'individual difference wave'-based peak window approach. In addition, our findings stress the importance of checking the reference electrodes concerning effects of the experimental conditions. Furthermore, interactions of topographical distribution and reference choice should be considered. Finally, we were able to show that the SME is lower for more datapoints that are given in the quantification period of the FRN, and higher for more negative FRN amplitudes. These biases may lead to divergence of SME and effect size detection. Therefore, if the SME was used to compare different processing choices one should consider controlling for these important aspects of the data and possibly include other quality criteria like effect sizes.
