RESUMO

Under the background of new medicine, innovative reform of medical education is mushrooming in Mainland, China. New medicine advocates an innovative training mode supported by medicine + X discipline. In the present study, we made use of the advantages of medical colleges to reform the curriculum of applied psychology and constructed an innovative curriculum system by integrating medicine with psychology. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the innovative curriculum system on the curriculum satisfaction of applied psychology and investigate the key factors that impact students' curriculum satisfaction. The class of 2018-2022 college students from the Department of Applied Psychology who were under different course training systems were selected to complete the curriculum evaluation questionnaire to evaluate students' curriculum satisfaction. The results demonstrated that curriculum satisfaction of the innovative curriculum system was significantly higher than that the one prior to the curriculum reform (P < 0.001), curriculum design, and teaching effect are the significant predictors affecting curriculum satisfaction. The results of this research provide innovative ideas for curriculum reform in psychology and strategies for the integration and development of medicine and psychology.

RESUMO

A novel approach, the differential Barrett-Joyner-Halenda model (D-BJH), is proposed to address the limitations of the traditional BJH model in determining the pore size distribution (PSD). This method integrates multilayer adsorption and capillary condensation processes using advanced numerical techniques, notably, a Galerkin-based framework for solving the differential BJH equations. The D-BJH model offers a precise analytical framework, establishing itself as a benchmark in adsorption theory. It enables accurate PSD calculations and provides robust theoretical support for interpreting adsorption isotherms. Additionally, a simplified D-BJH method allows for direct point-by-point PSD calculation, reducing computational complexity and eliminating cumulative errors inherent in traditional methods like BJH, DH, CI, and VBS. The D-BJH model demonstrates that PSD is directly related to the differential function of the isotherm and pore size concerning relative pressure. Comparative analyses with BJH, DH, and NLDFT models show that D-BJH effectively explains fundamental adsorption mechanisms, such as the "spurious peak" observed in desorption branches. This work expands the applicability of the BJH model, proving that both the D-BJH model and its simplified method are accurate and comprehensive for characterizing the pore structures of microporous and mesoporous materials.

RESUMO

Retinal disease has become the major cause of visual impairment and vision loss worldwide. Carotenoids, which have the potential antioxidant and eye-care activities, have been widely used in functional foods. Our previous study showed that fucoxanthin could exert photoprotective activity in UVB-induced retinal müller cells (RMCs). To extend the application of fucoxanthin in food industry, fucoxanthin, Undaria pinnatifida pulp (UPP), carrageenan, and other ingredients were mixed to prepare seaweed-flavoured photoprotective gummies in this study. The structural and functional properties of the gummies were then evaluated by physicochemical test and cell experiments. As a result, fucoxanthin enriched gummies presented favourable structural properties and flavour. The hydroxyl groups in fucoxanthin and κ-carrageenan are bonded through hydrogen bonds, forming the spatial network structure inside the gummies, enhancing its elasticity. The gummies showed significant antioxidant effect and alleviated the UVB oxidation damage in RMCs. Moreover, the main ingredients carrageenan and UPP improved the stability of fucoxanthin during in vitro digestion. The results enhance the application of fucoxanthin in functional food with photoprotective activity.

RESUMO

This paper utilizes Benford's law, the distribution that the first significant digit of numbers in certain datasets should follow, to assess the accuracy of self-reported health expenditure data known for measurement errors. We provide both simulation and real data evidence supporting the validity assumption that genuine health expenditure data conform to Benford's law. We then conduct a Benford analysis of health expenditure variables from two widely utilized public datasets, the China Health and Nutrition Survey and the China Family Panel Studies. Our findings show that health expenditure data in both datasets exhibit inconsistencies with Benford's law, with the former dataset tending to be less prone to reporting errors. These results remain robust while accounting for variations in survey design, recall periods, and sample sizes. Moreover, we demonstrate that data accuracy improves with a shorter time interval between hospitalization and interviews, when the data is self-reported as opposed to proxy responses, and at the household level. We find no compelling evidence that enumerators' assessments of respondents' credibility or urgency to end interviews are indicative of data accuracy. This paper contributes to literature by introducing an easy-to-implement analytical framework for scrutinizing and comparing the reporting accuracy of health expenditure data.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a lethal malignancy with limited treatment options. Recent discoveries have highlighted the pivotal role of miRNAs in HCC progression. We previously reported that the expression of miR-200b-3p was decreased in HCC cells and exosomal miR-200b-3p from hepatocytes inhibited angiogenesis by suppressing the expression of the endothelial transcription factor ERG (erythroblast transformation-specific (ETS)-related gene), leading to the hypothesis that the delivery of this miRNA may inhibit angiogenesis and suppress HCC growth in vivo. Here, we tested this hypothesis by using human HCC inoculation models. First, we transfected the human HepG2 HCC cells and established a stable cell line that overexpressed a high level of miR-200b-3p. When miR-200b-3p-overexpressing cells were injected into severe combined immunedeficiency (SCID)-beige mice, tumor growth was significantly reduced compared to tumors of control cells, with a reduction in the expression of ERG and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and subsequent angiogenesis. Intra-tumoral injection of exosomes containing high levels of miR-200b-3p also reduced the growth of parental HepG2 tumors with reduced ERG and VEGF expression and angiogenesis. These results validate the inhibitory role of miR-200b-3p in tumor angiogenesis, thereby suppressing HCC tumor growth, and provide a novel insight into its potential therapeutic application.

RESUMO

Strengthening tumor cellular adhesion through regulating the concentration of extracellular Ca2+ is highly challenging and promising for antimetastasis. Herein, a pH-responsive conjugated polymer-calcium composite nanoparticle (PFV/CaCO3/PDA@PEG) is developed for calcium-mediated cell adhesion enhancement-based antimetastasis and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-triggered calcium overload and photodynamic therapy (PDT) synergistic tumor treatment. PFV/CaCO3/PDA@PEG is mainly equipped with conjugated poly(fluorene-co-vinylene) (PFV-COOH)-composited CaCO3 nanoparticles, which can be rapidly decomposed under the tumor acidic microenvironment, effectively releasing Ca2+ and the photosensitizer PFV-COOH. The high extracellular Ca2+ concentration facilitates the generation of dimers between two adjacent cadherin ectodomains, which greatly enhances cell-cell adhesion and suppresses tumor metastasis. The inhibition rates are 97 and 87% for highly metastatic tumor cells 4T1 and MCF-7, respectively. Such a well-designed nanoparticle also contributes to realizing PDT, mitochondrial dysfunction, and ROS-triggered Ca2+ overload synergistic therapy. Furthermore, PFV/CaCO3/PDA@PEG displayed superior in vivo inhibition of 4T1 tumor growth and demonstrated a marked antimetastatic effect by both intravenous and intratumoral injection modes. Thus, this study provides a powerful strategy for calcium-mediated metastasis inhibition for tumor therapy.

RESUMO

Feature extraction plays a pivotal role in the context of single image super-resolution. Nonetheless, relying on a single feature extraction method often undermines the full potential of feature representation, hampering the model's overall performance. To tackle this issue, this study introduces the wide-activation feature distillation network (WFDN), which realizes single image super-resolution through dual-path learning. Initially, a dual-path parallel network structure is employed, utilizing a residual network as the backbone and incorporating global residual connections to enhance feature exploitation and expedite network convergence. Subsequently, a feature distillation block is adopted, characterized by fast training speed and a low parameter count. Simultaneously, a wide-activation mechanism is integrated to further enhance the representational capacity of high-frequency features. Lastly, a gated fusion mechanism is introduced to weight the fusion of feature information extracted from the dual branches. This mechanism enhances reconstruction performance while mitigating information redundancy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves stable and superior results compared to the state-of-the-art methods, as evidenced by quantitative evaluation metrics tests conducted on four benchmark datasets. Furthermore, our WFDN excels in reconstructing images with richer detailed textures, more realistic lines, and clearer structures, affirming its exceptional superiority and robustness.

RESUMO

Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) has been studied in remediation of heavy metal contaminated water or soil in recent years. This paper aims to investigate the immobilization mechanism of Zn2+, Ni2+, and Cr(VI) in contaminated sand, as well as strength enhancement of sand specimens by using EICP method with crude sword bean urease extracts. A series of liquid batch tests and artificially contaminated sand remediation experiments were conducted to explore the heavy metal immobilization efficacy and mechanisms. Results showed that the urea hydrolysis completion efficiency decreased as the Ca2+ concentration increased and the heavy metal immobilization percentage increased with the concentration of Ca2+ and treatment cycles in contaminated sand. After four treatment cycles with 0.5 mol/L Ca2+ added, the immobilization percentage of Zn2+, Ni2+, and Cr(VI) were 99.99 %, 86.38 %, and 75.18 %, respectively. The microscale analysis results presented that carbonate precipitates and metallic oxide such as CaCO3, ZnCO3, NiCO3, Zn(OH)2, and CrO(OH) were generated in liquid batch tests and sand remediation experiments. The SEM-EDS and FTIR results also showed that organic molecules and CaCO3 may adsorb or complex heavy metal ions. Thus, the immobilization mechanism of EICP method with crude sword bean urease can be considered as biomineralization, as well as adsorption and complexation by organic matter and calcium carbonate. The unconfined compressive strength of EICP-treated contaminated sand specimens demonstrated a positive correlation with the increased generation of carbonate precipitates, being up to 306 kPa after four treatment cycles with shear failure mode. Crude sword bean urease with 0.5 mol/L Ca2+ added is recommended to immobilize multiple heavy metal ions and enhance soil strength.

RESUMO

This study evaluates vacuum drying (VD), microwave drying (MD), hot air drying (HAD), and freeze drying (FD), on the color and microstructure changes of Ascophyllum nodosum (A. nodosum), which affect the extraction of polyphenols and flavonoids. During drying, VD and FD show slight color change and looser structure, aiding in active compound preservation and extraction. Polyphenols extracted from A. nodosum (PEAn) using these methods show higher anti-tyrosinase activity, with VD treatment exhibiting the strongest inhibition. Kinetic studies demonstrate competitive inhibition between PEAn and tyrosinase. The binding constant (Ki) values indicate that PEAn treated with VD exhibits the most effective inhibition on tyrosinase, and the Zeta potential suggests the formation of the most stable complex. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy shows significant enzyme rearrangement with VD-treated PEAn. Molecular docking confirms strong binding affinity. This study aims to enhance the utility of A. nodosum and develop novel uses for tyrosinase inhibitors in food.

RESUMO

Numerous applications at the photon-starved regime require a free-space coupling single-photon detector with a large active area, low dark count rate (DCR), and superior time resolutions. Here, we developed a superconducting microstrip single-photon detector (SMSPD), with a large active area of 260 µm in diameter, a DCR of ∼5k c p s, and a low time jitter of ∼171p s, operated at a near-infrared of 1550 nm and a temperature of ∼2.0K. As a demonstration, we applied the detector to a single-pixel galvanometer scanning system and successfully reconstructed the object information in depth and intensity using a time-correlated photon counting technology.

RESUMO

Chlorophyll (Chl) is the predominant pigment in green plants that can act as a food color and possesses various functional activities. However, its instability and rapid degradation on heating compromise the sensory qualities of its products. This study aimed to enhance the heat resistance of Chl by forming complex coacervates with two negatively charged polysaccharides, sodium alginate (SA) and K-carrageenan (KC). Dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed the formation of coacervates between Chl and the polysaccharides, whereas Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction were the primary forces behind complex formation. Electron spin resonance and thermodynamic studies further revealed that these complexes bolstered the thermal stability of Chl, with a maximum improvement of 70.38 % in t1/2 and a reduction of 50.72 % in the degradation rate constant. In addition, the antioxidant capacity of Chl was enhanced up to 35 %. Therefore, this study offers a novel approach to Chl preservation and suggests a viable alternative to artificial pigments in food products.

RESUMO

Adding natural bioactive ingredients to yogurt can improve the nutritional and physiological benefits. In this study, we used ultrasonic-assisted phlorotannin from Ascophyllum nodosum (A. nodosum) modified phycocyanin (PC) to form a complex (UPP) to produce a fortified fermented yogurt. The effects of PC and UPP on the structure, stability, and function of fermented yogurt within 7 days were assessed using physicochemical properties, texture analysis, rheological testing, 16S rDNA sequencing analysis, and lipidomics analysis. Molecular docking indicated that PC might bind to phlorotannin via ARG-77, ARG-84, LEU-120, ALA-81, CYS-82, and ASP-85 sites. When the mass ratio of the complex is 1:1, the ability of UPP1:1 to remove DPPH· scavenging ability in an acid environment increased by about 50 %. UPP1:1 with more acid stability changed the microstructure of the yogurt, enhanced the stability of the yogurt, improved the antioxidant properties, and inhibited the growth of harmful bacteria within 7 days. This work encouraged the extraction and use of phlorotannin from edible brown algae and offered a straightforward method for making yogurt supplemented with PC.

RESUMO

Atherosclerosis, characterized by the accumulation of lipid plaques on the inner walls of arteries, is the leading cause of heart attack, stroke and severe ischemic injuries. Senescent cells have been found to accumulate within atherosclerotic lesions and contribute to the progression of atherosclerosis. In our previous study, we discovered that suppressing Larp7 accelerates senescence by inhibiting Sirt1 activity, resulting in increased atherosclerosis in high-fat diet (HFD) fed and ApoE deficient (ApoEKO) mice. However, there has been no direct evidence demonstrating Larp7 per se could attenuate atherosclerosis. To this end, we generated a tetO-controlled and Cre-activated Larp7 gain-of-function mouse. Through RT-PCR and western blotting, we confirmed Larp7 overexpression in the aortas of HFD-fed ApoEKO; Larp7tetO mice. Larp7 overexpression led to increased Sirt1 activity and decreased cellular senescence signals mediated by p53/p65 in the aortas. Additionally, Larp7 overexpression reduced the presence of p16-positive senescent cells in the aortic lesions. Furthermore, Larp7 overexpression resulted in a decrease in pro-inflammatory macrophages and SASP factors. Consequently, Larp7 overexpression led to a reduction in the area of atherosclerotic lesions in HFD-fed ApoEKO; Larp7tetO mice. In summary, our study provides evidence that Larp7 overexpression holds promise as an approach to inhibit cellular senescence and prevent atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a chemically reactive chemical substance containing oxygen and a natural by-product of normal oxygen metabolism. Excessive ROS affect the growth process of crops, which will lead to the decrease of yield. Nitrogen, as a critical nutrient element in plants and plays a vital role in plant growth and crop production. Nitrate is the primary nitrogen source available to plants in agricultural soil and various natural environments. However, the molecular mechanism of ROS-nitrate crosstalk is still unclear. In this study, we used the foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) as the material to figure it out. Here, we show that excessive NaCl inhibits nitrate-promoted plant growth and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). NaCl induces ROS accumulation in roots, and ROS inhibits nitrate-induced gene expression in a short time. Surprisingly, low concentration ROS slight promotes and high concentration of ROS inhibits foxtail millet growth under long-term H2O2 treatment. These results may open a new perspective for further exploration of ROS-nitrate signaling pathway in plants.

RESUMO

With the diversified development of big data, detection and precision guidance technologies, electromagnetic (EM) functional materials and devices serving multiple spectrums have become a hot topic. Exploring the multispectral response of materials is a challenging and meaningful scientific question. In this study, MXene/TiO2 hybrids with tunable conduction loss and polarization relaxation are fabricated by in situ atomic reconstruction engineering. More importantly, MXene/TiO2 hybrids exhibit adjustable spectral responses in the GHz, infrared and visible spectrums, and several EM devices are constructed based on this. An antenna array provides excellent EM energy harvesting in multiple microwave bands, with |S11| up to - 63.2 dB, and can be tuned by the degree of bending. An ultra-wideband bandpass filter realizes a passband of about 5.4 GHz and effectively suppresses the transmission of EM signals in the stopband. An infrared stealth device has an emissivity of less than 0.2 in the infrared spectrum at wavelengths of 6-14 µm. This work can provide new inspiration for the design and development of multifunctional, multi-spectrum EM devices.

RESUMO

Seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers is a significant problem that can be addressed through the construction of subsurface dams or physical cut-off barriers. An alternative method is the use of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) to reduce the hydraulic conductivity of the porous medium and create a physical barrier. However, the effectiveness of this method depends on various factors, and the scientific literature presents conflicting results, making it challenging to generalise the findings. To overcome this challenge, a statistical and machine learning (ML) approach is employed to infer the causes for the reduction in hydraulic conductivity and identify the optimum MICP parameters for preventing seawater intrusion. The study involves data curation, exploratory analysis, and the development of various models to fit the input data (k-Nearest Neighbours - kNN, Support Vector Regression - SVR, Random Forests - RF, Gradient Boosting - XgBoost, Linear model with interaction terms, Ensemble learning algorithms with weighted averages - EnL-WA and stacking - EnL-Stack). The models performed reasonably well in the region where permeability reduction is sensitive to carbonate increase capturing the permeability reduction profile with respect to cementation level while demonstrating that they can be used in initial assessments of the specific conditions (e.g., soil properties). The best performing algorithms were the EnL-Stack and RF followed by XgBoost and SVR. The MICP method is effective in reducing hydraulic conductivity provided that the various biochemical parameters are optimised. Critical biochemical parameters for successful MICP formulations are the bacterial optical density, the urease activity, calcium chloride concentration and flow rate as well as the interaction terms across the properties of the porous media and the biochemical parameters. The models were used to identify the optimum MICP formulation for various porous media properties and the maximum permeability reduction profiles across cementation levels have been derived.

RESUMO

Deep-tissue optical imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) remain a big challenge for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Chemiluminescence (CL) has emerged as a promising tool for biological imaging and in vivo therapy. The development of covalent-binding chemiluminescence agents with high stability and high chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) efficiency is urgent. Herein, we design and synthesize an unprecedented chemiluminescent conjugated polymer PFV-Luminol, which consists of conjugated polyfluorene vinylene (PFV) main chains and isoluminol-modified side chains. Notably, isoluminol groups with chemiluminescent ability are covalently linked to main chains by amide bonds, which dramatically narrow their distance, greatly improving the CRET efficiency. In the presence of pathologically high levels of various reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially singlet oxygen (1O2), PFV-Luminol emits strong fluorescence and produces more ROS. Furthermore, we construct the PFV-L@PEG-NPs and PFV-L@PEG-FA-NPs nanoparticles by self-assembly of PFV-Luminol and amphiphilic copolymer DSPE-PEG/DSPE-PEG-FA. The chemiluminescent PFV-L@PEG-NPs nanoparticles exhibit excellent capabilities for in vivo imaging in different inflammatory animal models with great tissue penetration and resolution. In addition, PFV-L@PEG-FA-NPs nanoparticles show both sensitive in vivo chemiluminescence imaging and efficient chemiluminescence-mediated PDT for antitumors. This study paves the way for the design of chemiluminescent probes and their applications in the diagnosis and therapy of diseases.

RESUMO

Currently, people eat Undaria pinnatifida (UP) in a single way, and processing homogeneity is serious. However, UP has not gained any traction in the 3D printing industry to date. This study explored the incorporation of soy protein isolate (SPI), pea protein (PP), xanthan gum (XG), guar gum (GG), corn starch (CS), and potato starch (PS) into UP slurry liquid, the primary component of the study, to formulate a UP gel ink. The UP gel 3D printing ink system based on UP paste was established and characterized. The results show that hydrogen bonds are formed, and three-dimensional gel network structure is formed in all UP gel inks. UP gel inks containing high concentrations of SPI and GG exhibited good texture and rheological qualities and good 3D printing effect, with storage modulus (G') values of 8440.405 ± 3.893 and 8111.730 ± 3.585 Pa. The loss of modulus (G″) values were 1409.107 ± 3.524 and 1071.673 ± 3.669 Pa. Unfortunately, the properties of other UP gel inks are not suitable, resulting in poor 3D printing results. The food 3D printing method developed in this study provides valuable insights for expanding food 3D printing material choices and achieving high-value applications of UP.

RESUMO

Background: Sepsis is a clinical syndrome with high mortality. Subtype identification in sepsis is meaningful for improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The purpose of this research was to identify subtypes of sepsis using RNA-seq datasets and further explore key genes that were deregulated during the development of sepsis. Methods: The datasets GSE95233 and GSE13904 were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differential analysis of the gene expression matrix was performed between sepsis patients and healthy controls. Intersection analysis of differentially expressed genes was applied to identify common differentially expressed genes for enrichment analysis and gene set variation analysis. Obvious differential pathways between sepsis patients and healthy controls were identified, as were developmental stages during sepsis. Then, key dysregulated genes were revealed by short time-series analysis and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model. In addition, the MCPcounter package was used to assess infiltrating immunocytes. Finally, the dysregulated genes identified were verified using 69 clinical samples. Results: A total of 898 common differentially expressed genes were obtained, which were chiefly related to increased metabolic responses and decreased immune responses. The two differential pathways (angiogenesis and myc targets v2) were screened on the basis of gene set variation analysis scores. Four subgroups were identified according to median expression of angiogenesis and myc target v2 genes: normal, myc target v2, mixed-quiescent, and angiogenesis. The genes CHPT1, CPEB4, DNAJC3, MAFG, NARF, SNX3, S100A9, S100A12, and METTL9 were recognized as being progressively dysregulated in sepsis. Furthermore, most types of immune cells showed low infiltration in sepsis patients and had a significant correlation with the key genes. Importantly, all nine key genes were highly expressed in sepsis patients. Conclusion: This study revealed novel insight into sepsis subtypes and identified nine dysregulated genes associated with immune status in the development of sepsis. This study provides potential molecular targets for the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.

RESUMO

We propose a method for coupling a tapered optical fiber to an inverted tapered SiN waveguide by fabricating a microfiber using 3D nanoprinting lithography. The microfiber consists of three parts: a tapered cladding cap, an S-bend, and a straight part, all composed of high-refractive-index material. Light is adiabatically coupled from the tapered fiber to the printed microfiber through the cladding cap. The light is then transmitted through the S-bend and the straight part with low loss and is finally coupled to the waveguide through the evanescent field. In the simulation, our design can achieve a high coupling efficiency (TE mode) of ∼97% at a wavelength of 1542 nm with a wide bandwidth of ∼768n m at the 1-dB cutoff criterion.
