Sediments are critical pollution carriers in urban-rural rivers, which can threaten the water quality of the river and downstream lakes for a long time. However, it is still not clear whether conventional water pollution treatments could abate sediment pollution or not. In this study, heavy metals (HMs) and nutrient salts in the surface sediments and overlying water were investigated after decades' water pollution treatment in three urban-rural rivers. HM speciation was determined by the sequential extraction; diffusion fluxes were estimated using Fick's first law; HM ecological risk and nutrient pollution were evaluated; and pollution sources were identified by statistical analysis and GIS. The results showed that the HMs and nutrients were extremely serious in the urban regions. The accumulation level of Pb, Cu and Cd in the sediments of the three rivers were all much higher than the soil background value, and the labile fractions accounted for high proportions (57 % for Pb, 55 % for Cu and 43 % for Cd), which could be easily eluate from the sediments and caused hazards to the aquatic environment. The sediment diffusion fluxes of HMs and ammonia nitrogen were mostly positive, which indicated these sites currently released these pollutants from sediment to overlying water. Cd, Pb, Cu and Cr may mainly originate from industrial discharge and domestic sewage, while Cr was also greatly affected by crustal weathering; nutrient pollution may originate from agricultural activities and domestic sewage. Our study demonstrated that after decades' conventional water treatment in these rivers, the sediment pollution was still in a serious level with high ecological risk, and Cd was the dominant pollutant. At present, the external point source pollution has been effectively controlled, thus, the in-depth understanding of the sediment pollution characteristics after long-term water treatment could provide a scientific basis for the accurate elimination of river pollution.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive form of primary brain tumor, poses a considerable challenge in neuro-oncology. Despite advancements in therapeutic approaches, the prognosis for GBM patients remains bleak, primarily attributed to its inherent resistance to conventional treatments and a high recurrence rate. The primary goal of this study was to acquire molecular insights into GBM by constructing a gene co-expression network, aiming to identify and predict key genes and signaling pathways associated with this challenging condition. To investigate differentially expressed genes between various grades of Glioblastoma (GBM), we employed Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) methodology. Through this approach, we were able to identify modules with specific expression patterns in GBM. Next, genes from these modules were performed Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis using ClusterProfiler package. Our findings revealed a negative correlation between biological processes associated with neuronal development and functioning and GBM. Conversely, the processes related to the cell cycle, glomerular development, and ECM-receptor interaction exhibited a positive correlation with GBM. Subsequently, hub genes, including SYP, TYROBP, and ANXA5, were identified. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the existing research landscape on GBM, underscoring the challenges encountered by clinicians and researchers in devising effective therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

Breast cancer (BC) is a global health risk for women and has a high prevalence rate. The drug resistance, recurrence, and metastasis of BC affect patient prognosis, thus posing a challenge to scientists. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles (EVs) that originate from various cells; they have a double-layered lipid membrane structure and contain rich biological information. They mediate intercellular communication and have pivotal roles in tumor development, progression, and metastasis and drug resistance. Exosomes are important cell communication mediators in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Exosomes are utilized as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for estimating the treatment efficacy of BC and have the potential to function as tools to enable the targeted delivery of antitumor drugs. This review introduces recent progress in research on how exosomes influence tumor development and the TME. We also present the research progress on the application of exosomes as prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers and drug delivery tools.

Combining radiotherapy with immune checkpoint blockade therapy offers a promising approach to treat glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), yet challenges such as limited effectiveness and immune-related adverse events (irAEs) persist. These issues are largely due to the failure in targeting immunomodulators directly to the tumor microenvironment. To address this, we developed a biomimetic nanoplatform that combines a genetically modified mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) membrane with a bioactive nanoparticle core for chemokine-directed radioimmunotherapy of GBM. The CCR2-overexpressing MSC membrane acts as a tactical tentacle to achieve radiation-induced tropism toward the abundant chemokine ligand CCL2 in irradiated gliomas. The nanoparticle core, comprising diselenide-bridged mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and PD-L1 antibodies (αPD-L1), enables X-ray-responsive drug release and radiosensitization. In two murine models with orthotopic GBM tumors, this nanoplatform reinvigorated immunogenic cell death, and augmented the efficacy and specificity of GBM radioimmunotherapy, with reduced occurrence of irAEs. This study suggests a promising radiation-induced tropism strategy for targeted drug delivery, and presents a potent nanoplatform that enhances the efficacy and safety of radio-immunotherapy. Sympathetic nerves play a pivotal role in promoting tumor growth through crosstalk with tumor and stromal cells. Chemotherapy exacerbates the infiltration of sympathetic nerves into tumors, thereby providing a rationale for inhibiting sympathetic innervation to enhance chemotherapy. Here, we discovered that doxorubicin increases the density and activity of sympathetic nerves in breast cancer mainly by upregulating the expression of nerve growth factors (NGFs) in cancer cells. To address this, we developed a combination therapy by co-encapsulating small interfering RNA (siRNA) and doxorubicin within breast cancer-targeted poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles, aiming to suppress NGF expression post-chemotherapy. Incorporating NGF blockade into the nanoplatform for chemotherapy effectively mitigated the chemotherapy-induced proliferation of sympathetic nerves. This not only bolstered the tumoricidal activity of chemotherapy, but also amplified its stimulatory impact on the antitumor immune response by increasing the infiltration of immunostimulatory cells into tumors while concurrently reducing the frequency of immunosuppressive cells. Consequently, the combined nanodrug approach, when coupled with anti-PD-L1 treatment, exhibited a remarkable suppression of primary and deeply metastatic tumors with minimal systematic toxicity. Importantly, the nanoplatform relieved chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathic pain (CIPNP) by diminishing the expression of pain mediator NGFs. In summary, this research underscores the significant potential of NGF knockdown in enhancing immunochemotherapy outcomes and presents a nanoplatform for the highly efficient and low-toxicity treatment of breast cancer.

In this study, 14 abietene and pimarene diterpenoids were isolated from the woods of Agathis dammara. Among them, 4 new compounds, dammarone A-C and dammaric acid A (1-4), were firstly reported, respectively. The structure of the new compounds was determined by HR ESI-MS and 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy, and their absolute configuration was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) exciton chirality method. The hypoglycemic effect of all compounds was evaluated by transgenic zebrafish model, and the structure-activity relationship was discussed. Hinokione (7, HO) has low toxicity and significant hypoglycemic effects on zebrafish, the mechanism is mainly by promoting the differentiation of zebrafish pancreatic endocrine precursor cells (PEP cells) into ß cells, thereby promoting the regeneration of pancreatic ß cells.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer patients receiving postoperative gemcitabine adjuvant therapy and specific clinical/pathological characteristics, as well as its impact on patient prognosis. METHODS: From June 2018 to June 2021, clinical and pathological data of 148 pancreatic cancer patients were collected, and 101 patients were followed up for tumor recurrence/metastasis and survival status. The correlation between chemoresistance and specific clinical/pathological characteristics or patient prognosis was retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 148 patients, 78 were in the chemoresistance group and 70 in the non-chemoresistance group. Univariate analysis showed that the development of chemoresistance may be related to patient age, combined diabetes, preoperative CA19-9 level, tumor size, AJCC stage, vascular invasion, and positive lymph node ratio. Furthermore, subsequent multivariate analysis incorporating these variables indicated that tumor size may be a key factor influencing chemoresistance (p < 0.001, OR = 1.584). Log-rank test showed patients in the chemoresistance group had worse overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.102, p = 0.018) and progression free survival (PFS) (HR = 3.208, p = 0.002) than patients in the non-chemoresistance group; and patients with smaller size tumors (diameter ≤3 cm) had significantly better OS (HR = 2.923, p < 0.001) and PFS (HR = 2.930, p = 0.003) than those with larger size tumors (diameter >3 cm). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with pancreatic cancer receiving postoperative gemcitabine adjuvant therapy are more likely to develop chemoresistance when their tumor sizes are larger (diameter >3 cm). Development of chemoresistance exacerbates the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer, and larger tumor size is also a risk factor for poor prognosis in these patients.

Pod dehiscence brings much loss for modern agricultural production, and multiple pod dehiscence components have been identified in many plant species. However, the pod dehiscence regulation factors in soybean are limited. In this study, we investigate the function of GmDIR26, a close homologues gene of pod dehiscence genes GmPdh1, PvPdh1, and CaPdh1, in the regulation of pod dehiscence in soybean. The secondary and tertiary structure analysis reveals that GmDIR26 protein has a similar structure with GmPdh1, PvPdh1, and CaPdh1 proteins. Synteny analysis of soybean and chickpea genomes shows that the genomic region surrounding GmDIR26 and CaPdh1 might be evolved from the same ancestor, and these two genes might have similar function. GmDIR26 shows an increased expression pattern during pod development and reaches a peak at beginning seed stage. Meanwhile, GmDIR26 exhibits high expression levels in dorsal suture and pod wall, but low expression pattern in ventral suture. In addition, GmDIR26 shows higher expression levels in pod dehiscence genotype than that in pod indehiscence accessions. Overexpression of GmDIR26 in soybean increases pod dehiscence in transgenic plants, of which the lignin layer in inner sclerenchyma pods is thicker and looser. The expression levels of several pod dehiscence genes are altered. Our study provides important information for further modification of pod dehiscence resistance soybean and characterization of soybean pod dehiscence regulation network.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) influences neurodevelopment. Thyroid homeostasis disruption is thought to be a possible underlying mechanism. However, current epidemiological evidence remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the effects of prenatal PFAS exposure on the intelligence quotient (IQ) of school-aged children and assess the potential mediating role of fetal thyroid function. METHODS: The study included 327 7-year-old children from the Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort Study (SMBCS). Cord serum samples were analyzed for 12 PFAS concentrations and 5 thyroid hormone (TH) levels. IQ was assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Chinese Revised (WISC-CR). Generalized linear models (GLM) and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) were used to evaluate the individual and combined effects of prenatal PFAS exposure on IQ. Additionally, the impact on fetal thyroid function was examined using a GLM, and a mediation analysis was conducted to explore the potential mediating roles of this function. RESULTS: The molar sum concentration of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (ΣPFCA) in cord serum was significantly negatively associated with the performance IQ (PIQ) of 7-year-old children (ß = -6.21, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: -12.21, -0.21), with more pronounced associations observed among girls (ß = -9.57, 95 % CI: -18.33, -0.81) than in boys. Negative, albeit non-significant, cumulative effects were noted when considering PFAS mixture exposure. Prenatal exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid was positively associated with the total thyroxine/triiodothyronine ratio. However, no evidence supported the mediating role of thyroid function in the link between PFAS exposure and IQ. CONCLUSIONS: Increased prenatal exposure to PFASs negatively affected the IQ of school-aged children, whereas fetal thyroid function did not serve as a mediator in this relationship.

BACKGROUND: Gemcitabine is the first-line chemotherapy drug that can easily cause chemotherapy resistance. Huaier is a traditional Chinese medicine and shows an antitumor effect in pancreatic cancer, but whether it can enhance the gemcitabine chemotherapeutic response and the potential mechanism remain unknown. PURPOSE: This study was performed to explore the effect of Huaier in promoting the tumor-killing effect of gemcitabine and elucidate the possible mechanism in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: Cell Counting Kit-8 assays and colony formation assays were used to detect proliferation after different treatments. Protein coimmunoprecipitation was applied to demonstrate protein interactions. Nuclear protein extraction and immunofluorescence were used to confirm the intracellular localization of the proteins. Western blotting was performed to detect cell proliferation-related protein expression or cancer stem cell-associated protein expression. Sphere formation assays and flow cytometry were used to assess the stemness of pancreatic cancer cells. The in vivo xenograft model was used to confirm the inhibitory effect under physiological conditions, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect protein expression. RESULTS: Huaier suppressed the proliferation and stem cell-like properties of pancreatic cancer cells. We found that Huaier suppressed the expression of forkhead box protein M1 (FoxM1). In addition, Huaier inhibited FoxM1 function by blocking its nuclear translocation. Treatment with Huaier reversed the stemness induced by gemcitabine in a FoxM1-dependent manner. Furthermore, we verified the above results by an in vivo study, which reached the same conclusion as those in vitro. CONCLUSION: Overall, this study illustrates that Huaier augments the tumor-killing effect of gemcitabine through suppressing the stemness induced by gemcitabine in a FoxM1-dependent way. These results indicate that Huaier can be applied to overcome gemcitabine resistance.

A functional female gametophyte is the basis of successful sexual reproduction in flowering plants. During female gametophyte development, the megaspore mother cell (MMC), differentiated from a single subepidermal somatic cell in the nucellus, undergoes meiosis to produce four megaspores; only the one at the chalazal end, referred to as functional megaspore (FM), undergoes three rounds of mitosis and develops into a mature embryo sac. Here, we reported that RING1A and RING1B (RING1A/B), two functionally redundant Polycomb proteins in Arabidopsis, are critical for female gametophyte development. The mutations of RING1A/B resulted in defects in MMC and FM's specification and subsequent mitosis of FM, thereby leading to aborted ovules. Gene expression analysis revealed several genes essential for female gametophyte development, including Argonaute (AGO) family genes and critical transcription factors, were ectopically expressed in ring1a ring1b. Furthermore, RING1A/B bound some of these genes to promote H2A monoubiquitination (H2Aub) deposition. Together, RING1A/B promote H2Aub modification at genes essential for female gametophyte development, suppressing their expression to ensure the progression of female gametophyte development.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the characteristic of corrective epithelial thickness after femtosecond laser-assisted lenticule intrastromal keratoplasty (LIKE) to correct moderate-to-high hyperopia. METHODS: The prospective case series study of the LIKE procedure was performed to correct moderate-to-high hyperopia. The epithelial thickness map was generated by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in the corneal central 9-mm zone. Keratometry and corneal higher order aberrations were analyzed by Pentacam (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH) preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: In the 26 eyes of 13 participants who underwent the LIKE procedure for moderate-to-high hyperopia, the attempted spherical equivalence (SEQ) was +6.50 ± 1.09 diopters (D). Compared to the preoperative epithelial thickness maps, the postoperative epithelial thickness had become significantly thinner in the central 5-mm zone; the difference was 6 to 7 µm. The paracentral epithelium performed nonuniform remodeling; the thinnest epithelial thickness was located in the inferotemporal section, which has the greatest difference from the superonasal; the difference between these two was approximately 3 µm. Through correlation analysis, it was found that the sections with thinner epithelium were significantly related to corneal curvature and corneal vertical coma. CONCLUSIONS: The LIKE procedure can be used to correct moderate-to-high hyperopia. This study further indicated the epithelial remodeling characteristic after the LIKE procedure: the central and paracentral corneal epithelial thickness becomes thinner, and the epithelial thickness distributes non-uniformly, which may be the important factor of the postoperative curvature asymmetric distribution and induction of corneal vertical coma. Slow dissolution/hydrolysis of insoluble/macromolecular organics and poor sludge filterability restrict the application potential of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Bubble-free membrane microaeration was firstly proposed to overcome these obstacles in this study. The batch anaerobic digestion tests feeding insoluble starch and soluble peptone with and without microaeration showed that microaeration led to a 65.7-144.8% increase in methane production and increased critical flux of microfiltration membrane via driving the formation of large sludge flocs and the resultant improvement of sludge settleability. The metagenomic and bioinformatic analyses showed that microaeration significantly enriched the functional genes and bacteria for polysaccharide and protein hydrolysis, microaeration showed little negative effects on the functional genes involved in anaerobic metabolisms, and substrate transfer from starch to peptone significantly affected the functional genes and microbial community. This study demonstrates the dual synergism of microaeration to enhance the dissolution/hydrolysis/acidification of insoluble/macromolecular organics and sludge filterability for AnMBR application.

Losartan is widely used in the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and has achieved good clinical efficacy, but its exact mechanism is not clear. We performed high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technology to screen the potential target of losartan in treating CKD. According to the HTS results, we found that the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signal pathway was enriched. Therefore, we conducted in vivo and in vitro experiments to verify it. We found that TNF signal pathway was activated in both unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) rats and human proximal renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) treated with transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1), while losartan can significantly inhibit TNF signal pathway as well as the expression of fibrosis related genes (such as COL-1, α-SMA and Vimentin). These data suggest that losartan may ameliorate renal fibrosis through modulating the TNF pathway.

BACKGROUND: Postcholecystectomy diarrhea (PCD) is among the most distressing and well-known clinical complications of cholecystectomy. Despite various available treatment options, clinical outcomes are greatly limited by unclear pathophysiological mechanisms. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is widely used as a complementary and alternative therapy for the treatment of functional diarrhea. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CHM for the treatment of PCD. METHODS: Electronic database searches were conducted using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Chinese Scientific Journal Database. All RCTs on CHMs for managing patients with PCD were included. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS: The present meta-analysis included 14 RCTs published between 2009 and 2021 in China. The primary findings indicated that CHM had a higher total efficacy and cure rate as a monotherapy for PCD (P < .00001). Two trials reported the scores of the main symptoms with statistically significant differences in stool nature (P < .00001), defecation frequency (P = .002), and abdominal pain and bloating (P < .00001). In addition, CHM reduced CD3+ and CD4+ levels more effectively in terms of T lymphocyte subset determination (P < .00001). The main symptoms of PCD in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are splenic deficiency and liver stagnation. All treatments were used to strengthen the spleen and (or) soothing the liver. CONCLUSION: CHM had a favorable effect on PCD. No adverse events were observed. Larger, high-quality RCTs are warranted to draw definitive conclusions and standardize treatment protocols.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, often requiring intestinal resection as a common treatment. However, recurrence after surgery is common. The anastomotic configuration after bowel resection appears to be associated with the recurrence of CD. Previous studies have suggested that the Kono-S anastomosis may help to reduce the recurrence rate. However, the results remain controversial. Therefore, evidence-based evidence is needed to prove the advantages of Kono-S anastomosis. AIM: To measure the influence of anastomosis techniques on the long-term relapse rate of CD by conducting a meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were searched until October 8, 2023. Patients who underwent intestinal resection due to CD were included. The intervention measures included Kono-S anastomosis, whereas the control group received traditional anastomosis such as end-to-end, end-to-side, and side-to-side anastomosis. Only randomized clinical trials and observational studies were included. The primary outcome measures were hospital stay post-surgery, overall postoperative complication incidence, the proportion of Clavien-Dindo grade IIIa or higher, overall postoperative recurrence rate, and Rutgeerts score. RESULTS: From 2011 to 2023, six articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results indicated that Kono-S anastomosis can reduce the hospital stay post-surgery of patients with CD [MD = -0.26, 95%CI: -0.42 to -0.10, P = 0.002] than other traditional anastomosis methods. Compared to other traditional anastomosis methods, Kono-S anastomosis can significantly reduce the total recurrence rate [MD = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.17 to 0.98, P = 0.05] and postoperative Rutgeerts score [MD = -0.81, 95%CI: -0.96 to -0.66, P < 0.001] in patients with CD. However, there is no significant disparity in the overall occurrence of postoperative complications and the proportion of Clavien-Dindo ≥ IIIa. CONCLUSION: Kono-S anastomosis has the potential to expedite the recuperation of CD and diminish relapse hazards; however, additional larger trials are necessary to authenticate its effectiveness.

Objective: The five-needle pancreato-intestinal anastomosis method is used in laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD). The aim of this study was to explore the clinical efficacy and adverse reactions of this new surgical method and to provide a scientific reference for promoting this new surgical method in the future. Methods: A single-centre observational study was conducted to evaluate the safety and practicality of the five-needle method for pancreatojejunostomy in LPD surgeries. The clinical data of 78 patients who were diagnosed with periampullary malignancies and underwent LPD were collected from the 1st of August 2020 to the 31st of June 2023 at Lanzhou University First Hospital. Forty-three patients were treated with the 'Five-Needle' method (test groups), and 35 patients were treated with the 'Duct-to-Mucosa' method (control group) for pancreatojejunostomy. These two methods are the most commonly used and highly preferred pancreatointestinal anastomosis methods worldwide. The primary outcome was pancreatic fistula, and the incidence of which was compared between the two groups. Results: The incidence of pancreatic fistula in the five-needle method group and the duct-to-mucosa method group was not significantly different (25.6% vs. 28.6%, p=0.767). Additionally, there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of intraoperative blood loss (Z=-1.330, p=0.183), postoperative haemorrhage rates (p=0.998), length of postoperative hospital stay (Z=-0.714, p=0.475), bile leakage rate (p=0.745), or perioperative mortality rate (p=0.999). However, the operative time in the 'Five-Needle' method group was significantly shorter than that in the 'Duct-to-Mucosa' method group (270 ± 170 mins vs. 300 ± 210 mins, Z=-2.336, p=0.019). Further analysis revealed that in patients with pancreatic ducts smaller than 3 mm, the incidence of pancreatic fistula was lower for the 'Five-Needle' method than for the 'Duct-to-Mucosa' method (12.5% vs. 53.8%, p=0.007). Conclusion: The five-needle method is safe and efficient for pancreatojejunostomy in LPD, and is particularly suitable for anastomosis in nondilated pancreatic ducts. It is a promising, valuable, and recommendable surgical method worthy of wider adoption.

Diabetic wounds are a difficult medical challenge. Excessive secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in diabetic wounds further degrades the extracellular matrix and growth factors and causes severe vascular damage, which seriously hinders diabetic wound healing. To solve these issues, a double-network porous hydrogel composed of poly (methyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) (p(MMA-co-AM)) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was constructed by the high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) technique for the delivery of potassium sucrose octasulfate (PSO), a drug that can inhibit MMPs, increase angiogenesis and improve microcirculation. The hydrogel possessed a typical polyHIPE hierarchical microstructure with interconnected porous morphologies, high porosity, high specific surface area, excellent mechanical properties and suitable swelling properties. Meanwhile, the p(MMA-co-AM)/PVA@PSO hydrogel showed high drug-loading performance and effective PSO release. In addition, both in vitro and in vivo studies showed that the p(MMA-co-AM)/PVA@PSO hydrogel had good biocompatibility and significantly accelerated diabetic wound healing by inhibiting excessive MMP-9 in diabetic wounds, increasing growth factor secretion, improving vascularization, increasing collagen deposition and promoting re-epithelialization. Therefore, this study provided a reliable therapeutic strategy for diabetic wound healing, some theoretical basis and new insights for the rational design and preparation of wound hydrogel dressings with high porosity, high drug-loading performance and excellent mechanical properties.

Previous works have focused on enhancing the tensile properties, mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability of wearable devices for real-time and continuous health management. Silk proteins, including silk fibroin (SF) and sericin, show great advantages in wearable devices due to their natural biodegradability, excellent biocompatibility, and low fabrication cost. Moreover, these silk proteins possess great potential for functionalization and are being explored as promising candidates for multifunctional wearable devices with sensory capabilities and therapeutic purposes. This review introduces current advancements in silk-based constituents used in the assembly of wearable sensors and adhesives for detecting essential physiological indicators, including metabolites in body fluids, body temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG), pulse, and respiration. SF and sericin play vital roles in addressing issues related to discomfort reduction, signal fidelity improvement, as well as facilitating medical treatment. These developments signify a transition from hospital-centered healthcare toward individual-centered health monitoring and on-demand therapeutic interventions.

The associations between metallic elements and ovarian reserve function have remained uncertain yet. In this case-control study, we involved 149 women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) and 151 women with normal ovarian reserve, and assessed the levels of six heavy metallic (Cr, Cd, As, Hg, Pb, and Mn) and seven trace essential (Se, Fe, Zn, Co, Mo, Cu, I) elements in their follicular fluid with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Associations were examined with logistic regressions and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). As a result, we found that the medium and the highest tertiles of Pb were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of DOR compared to the lowest tertile, while the medium or/an the highest tertiles of Cu, I, and Fe showed significantly lower likelihoods of DOR compared to the lowest tertiles. Cu and Pb showed significantly non-linear associations with ovarian reserve markers such as follicle-stimulating, anti-mullerian hormone levels, and antral follicle count. With the rising overall concentrations of heavy metals, the likelihood of DOR increased although not significant. There was a trend of a "U-shaped" association across the whole concentration range of trace essential elements and the likelihood of DOR. Our study revealed that avoiding heavy metallic elements and properly supplementing trace essential elements are conducive to ovarian function.
