RESUMO

Many primary care clinics struggle with rapid implementation and systematic expansion of primary care behavioral health (PCBH) services. Often, an uneven course of program development is due to lack of attention to preparing clinic leadership, addressing operational factors, and training primary care providers (PCPs) and nurses. This article offers competency tools for clinic leaders, PCPs, and nurses to use in assessing their status and setting change targets. These tools were developed by researchers working to disseminate evidence-based interventions in primary care clinics that included fully integrated behavioral health consultants and were then used by early adaptors of the PCBH model. By deploying these strategies, both practicing and teaching clinics will take a big step forward in developing the primary care workforce needed for primary care teams, where the behavioral health needs of a patient of any age can be addressed at the time of need.

RESUMO

This study investigated the accuracy with which 30 young adults without disabilities learned abbreviation expansion codes associated with specific vocabulary items that were stored in an AAC device with two accessing methods: mouse access and keyboard access. Both accessing methods utilized a specialized computer application, called AAC Menu, which allowed for errorless practice. Mouse access prompted passive learning, whereas keyboard access prompted active learning. Results revealed that participants who accessed words via a keyboard demonstrated significantly higher mastery of abbreviation-expansion codes than those who accessed words via a computer mouse.

RESUMO

Mutations in the human gene TCOF1 cause a mandibulofacial dysostosis known as Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS). An infant rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) that displayed the TCS phenotype was identified at the California National Primate Research Center. The TCOF1 coding region was cloned from a normal rhesus macaque and sequenced. The rhesus macaque homolog of TCOF1 is 91.6% identical in cDNA sequence and 93.8% identical in translated protein sequence compared to human TCOF1. Sequencing of TCOF1 in the TCS-affected rhesus macaque showed no mutations within the coding region or splice sites; however, real-time quantitative PCR showed an 87% reduction of spleen TCOF1 mRNA level in the TCS affected macaque when compared with normal macaque spleen.
