BACKGROUND: Among Japanese pharmacists, there is a gap in their commitment to self-improvement and a possible gap in their ability to identify and solve problems. However, the factors causing this situation have not yet been clarified. This study was conducted to identify factors that influence the abilities of Japanese pharmacists to identify and solve problems, which are skills considered essential for this profession. A prior history of presenting at academic conferences was set as a surrogate outcome to clarify whether having this experience affects the factors. METHODS: A nationwide internet-based survey was conducted among 300 participating hospitals and 300 community pharmacists. The survey was discontinued when the sample size of each group reached 300. The respondents were categorized into two groups on the basis of their experience of presenting at academic conferences in the survey item "status of self-improvement after employment." Their association with other survey items was determined using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The multivariate analysis revealed that 152 (50.7%) hospital pharmacists and 41 (13.7%) community pharmacists had presented at academic conferences. Among the hospital pharmacists, the experience of presenting at academic conferences was significantly associated with the "age 30 s (*references 20 s)," "presence of pharmacists to consult," "experience supervising interns," and "number of types of self-improvement" factors. For the community pharmacists, prior conference presentation experience was significantly associated with "age over 70 s," "highest educational background (doctoral or master's degree)," and "number of types of self-improvement." CONCLUSION: This pioneering study suggests that having prior experience of presenting at academic conferences as a surrogate outcome of pharmacists' problem-finding and problem-solving skills may be related to the support provided by human environmental factors at the facility, the status of self-improvement, and the highest educational background.

The strain of Cellulomonas fimi NBRC 15513 can generate electricity with cellulose as fuel without mediator using a single chamber type microbial fuel cell (MFC) which had 100 mL of chamber and 50 cm2 of the air cathode. The MFCs were operated over five days and showed the maximum current density of 10.0 ± 1.8 mA/m2, the maximum power density of 0.74 ± 0.07 mW/m2 and the ohmic resistance of 6.9 kΩ. According to the results of cyclic voltammetry, the appearance of the oxidation or reduction peak was not observed from the cell removed solution. The fact is that C. fimi does not secrete mediator-like compounds, while the oxidation peak was observed at +0.68 V from the phosphate buffer containing the washed cell. The peak appearance was caused by the electron transfer activity of which corresponds to cytochrome c, and disappeared after adding antimycin A which inhibits the electron transfer activity. The cell was alive throughout the experiment as the result of a colony forming unit on Luria-Bertani agar plates. This was thought that cytochrome c was on the membrane surface of the living cell and played a role in the direct electron transfer between the cells and anode.

A single chamber type microbial fuel cell (MFC) with 100 mL of chamber volume and 50 cm2 of air-cathode was developed in this study wherein a developed iron-plated carbon-felt anode and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 were used. The performance of the iron-plated carbon-felt anode and the possibility of corn steep liquor (CSL) as a fuel, which was the byproduct of corn wet milling and contained lactic acid, was investigated here. MFCs equipped with iron-plated or non-plated carbon-felt anodes exhibited maximum current densities of 443 or 302 mA/m2 using 10 g/L of reagent-grade lactic acid, respectively. In addition, using centrifuged CSL without insoluble ingredients or non-centrifuged CSL as a fuel, the maximum current densities of the MFCs with iron-plated carbon-felt anode were 321 or 158 mA/m2, respectively. This report demonstrated the effect of iron-plated carbon-felt anode for electricity generation of MFC using S. oneidensis MR-1 and the performance of CSL as a fuel.

Dinitrogen fixation, the biological reduction in N2 gas to ammonia contributes to the supply of new nitrogen in the surface ocean. To understand the diversity and abundance of potentially diazotrophic (N2 fixing) microorganisms associated with marine zooplankton, especially copepods, the nifH gene was studied using zooplankton samples collected in the Pacific Ocean. In total, 257 nifH sequences were recovered from 23 nifH-positive DNA extracts out of 90 copepod samples. The nifH genes derived from cyanobacteria related to Trichodesmium, α- and γ-subdivisions of proteobacteria, and anaerobic euryarchaeota related to Methanosaeta concilii were detected. Our results indicated that Pleuromamma, Pontella, and Euchaeta were the major copepod genera hosting dinitrogen fixers, though we found no species-specific association between copepods and dinitrogen fixers. Also, the digital PCR provided novel data on the number of copies of the nifH gene in individual copepods, which we report the range from 30 to 1666 copies per copepod. This study is the first systematic study of zooplankton-associated diazotrophs, covering a large area of the open ocean, which provide a clue to further study of a possible new hotspot of N2 fixation.

1,3-Bis(2-pyrryl)benzene was used to prepare dibenziamethyrin, in which two pyrrole units of [24]amethyrin(1.0.0.1.0.0) are replaced by benzene. 1,4-Bis(2-pyrryl)benzene, 2,5-bis(2-pyrryl)thiophene, and 4,4'-bis(2-pyrryl)biphenyl were also used in place of 2,2'-bipyrrole to give expanded analogues of [24]rosarin(1.0.1.0.1.0) and [32]octaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0). These large porphyrinoids can incorporate multiple metal units of Rh(CO)2 and Pd(π-allyl) with considerable deviation of the metal atoms from the dipyrrin planes, evidenced by X-ray crystallography. The coordinated Rh(CO)2 group shuttled between both sides of the macrocycle; the rate was dependent on the spacer, ring size, and number of metal atoms. Variable temperature (1) H NMR spectroscopy showed that the tris-rhodium complexes of the expanded rosarins with 1,4-phenylene or 2,5-thienylene spacers adopt a C3v -symmetric form and a Cs -symmetric form as a result of the Rh(CO)2 groups hopping through the macrocycle cavity. The C3v -symmetric form has a greater dipole moment and, therefore, is favored in solvents of greater polarity. The Rh(CO)2 groups in the tris-rhodium complex of the expanded rosarin with 4,4'-biphenylene spacers hop so fast that an averaged spectral pattern (D3h ) was seen in the (1) H NMR spectrum, even at -60 °C. Expanded octaphyrins with 1,4-phenylene and 2,5-thienylene spacers bind four Rh(CO)2 groups outside the macrocycle cavity to form a D2d -symmetric saddle-shaped structure that did not show any dynamic behavior on the NMR timescale, even at 80 °C. This tetranuclear complex is one of the largest porphyrinoid metal complexes characterized by X-ray crystallography to date.

2,5-Bis(4-propyl-2-pyrrolyl)thiophene was reacted with aryl aldehydes to afford large porphyrinoids; [24]dithiaamethyrin(1.0.0.1.0.0) and [36]trithianonaphyrin(1.0.0.1.0.0.1.0.0). X-ray crystallography of the dithiaamethyrin revealed a highly planar ring structure with mean plane deviation (MPD) value of 0.053 Å. A large positive NICS(0) value (+13.9 ppm) calculated for this planar 24π system unambiguously indicates an antiaromatic character that is consistent with a remarkably low field (1) H chemical shift of the inner NH proton at 24.0 ppm. The magnitude of the paratropic ring current effect in the 24π amethyrin framework in the free base form and the diprotonated form was discussed on the basis of the MPD value and the NICS value. The present dithiaamethyrin is much more strongly antiaromatic than the dodecaalkylamethyrin in their free base forms, but the order inversed in their diprotonated forms.

Vision-based target tracking and fixation to keep objects that move in three dimensions in view is important for many tasks in several fields including intelligent transportation systems and robotics. Much of the visual control literature has focused on the kinematics of visual control and ignored a number of significant dynamic control issues that limit performance. In line with this, this paper presents a neural network (NN)-based binocular tracking scheme for high-performance target tracking and fixation with minimum sensory information. The procedure allows the designer to take into account the physical (Lagrangian dynamics) properties of the vision system in the control law. The design objective is to synthesize a binocular tracking controller that explicitly takes the systems dynamics into account, yet needs no knowledge of dynamic nonlinearities and joint velocity sensory information. The combined neurocontroller-observer scheme can guarantee the uniform ultimate bounds of the tracking, observer, and NN weight estimation errors under fairly general conditions on the controller-observer gains. The controller is tested and verified via simulation tests in the presence of severe target motion changes.

RESUMO

We present a methodology of controlling machines using spoken language commands. The two major problems relating to the speech interfaces for machines, namely, the interpretation of words with fuzzy implications and the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words in natural conversation, are investigated. The system proposed in this paper is designed to overcome the above two problems in controlling machines using spoken language commands. The present system consists of a hidden Markov model (HMM) based automatic speech recognizer (ASR), with a keyword spotting system to capture the machine sensitive words from the running utterances and a fuzzy-neural network (FNN) based controller to represent the words with fuzzy implications in spoken language commands. Significance of the words, i.e., the contextual meaning of the words according to the machine's current state, is introduced to the system to obtain more realistic output equivalent to users' desire. Modularity of the system is also considered to provide a generalization of the methodology for systems having heterogeneous functions without diminishing the performance of the system. The proposed system is experimentally tested by navigating a mobile robot in real time using spoken language commands.
