RESUMO

Diabetic complications present throughout a wide range of body tissues, however one of the most widely recognised complications remains to be chronic diabetic wounds. Current treatment options largely rely on standard wound treatment routines which provide no promotion of wound healing mechanisms at different physiological stages of repair. Recently materials produced using novel additive manufacturing techniques have been receiving attention for applications in wound care and tissue repair. Additive manufacturing techniques have recently been used in the interest of targeted drug delivery and production of novel materials resembling characteristics of native tissues. The potential to exploit these highly tailorable manufacturing techniques for the design of novel wound care remedies is highly desirable. In the present study two additive manufacturing techniques are combined to produce a scaffold for the treatment of diabetic wounds. The combination of microfluidic manufacturing of an antimicrobial liposome (LP) formulation and a coaxial electrospinning method incorporating both antimicrobial and proangiogenic factors allowed dual delivery of therapeutics to target both infection and lack of vascularisation at wound sites. The coaxial fibres comprised of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) core containing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and a poly (l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) shell blended with amoxicillin (Amox). Additionally, a liposomal formulation was produced to incorporate Amox and adhered to the surface of fibres loaded with Amox and VEGF. The liposomal loading provided the potential to deliver a much higher, more clinically relevant dose of Amox without detrimentally changing the mechanical properties of the material. The growth factor release was sustained up to 7-days in vitro. The therapeutic effect of the antibiotic loading was analysed using a disk diffusion method with a significant increase in zone diameter following LP adhesion, proving the full scaffold system had improved efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Additionally, the dual-loaded scaffolds show enhanced potential for supporting vascular growth in vitro, as demonstrated via a viability assay and tubule formation studies. Results showed a significant increase in the average total number of tubes from 10 in control samples to 77 in samples fully-loaded with Amox and VEGF.

RESUMO

Adverse outcomes associated with pregnancy, including severe acute maternal morbidity (SAMM) and mortality, are internationally regarded as important indicators of quality of maternity services. Varied definitions and processes are barriers for SAMM recording, reporting and review. Identifying and documenting these cases of SAMM is a critical first step. Case reviews allow exploration of factors contributing to SAMM. Translation of the lessons learnt into practice improvement strategies and dissemination of this knowledge is essential for continual quality improvement. This review will outline the current status of SAMM review internationally and in Australia.

The production of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) is challenging, especially when considering the incorporation of biologics. A novel in-house method of microfluidic production of biologic-encapsulated SLNs is proposed, using a variety of base materials for formulation to help overcome the barriers presented during manufacture and administration. Trypsin is used as a model drug for hydrophilic encapsulation whilst testosterone is employed as a positive non-biologic lipophilic control active pharmaceutical ingredient. Particle sizes obtained ranged from 160 to 320 nm, and a lead formulation has been identified from the combinations assayed, allowing for high encapsulation efficiencies (47-90%, respectively) of both the large hydrophilic and the small hydrophobic active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Drug release profiles were analysed in vitro to provide useful insight into sustained kinetics, providing data towards future in vivo studies, which displayed a slow prolonged release for testosterone and a quicker burst release for trypsin. The study represents a large leap forward in the field of SLN production, especially in the field of difficult-to-encapsulate molecules, and the technique also benefits from being more environmentally sustainable due to the use of microfluidics.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The sleep apnea multi-level surgery (SAMS) randomized clinical trial showed surgery improved outcomes at 6 months compared to ongoing medical management in patients with moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who failed continuous positive airway pressure therapy. This study reports the long-term outcomes of the multi-level surgery as a case series. METHODS: Surgical participants were reassessed >2 years postoperatively with the same outcomes reported in the main SAMS trial. Primary outcomes were apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), with secondary outcomes including other polysomnography measures, symptoms, quality of life, and adverse events. Long-term effectiveness (baseline to long-term follow-up [LTFU]) and interval changes (6 month to LTFU) were assessed using mixed effects regression models. Control participants were also reassessed for rate of subsequent surgery and outcomes. RESULTS: 36/48 (75%) of surgical participants were reevaluated (mean (standard deviation)) 3.5 (1.0) years following surgery, with 29 undergoing polysomnography. AHI was 41/h (23) at preoperative baseline and 21/h (18) at follow-up, representing persistent improvement of -24/h (95% CI -32, -17; p < 0.001). ESS was 12.3 (3.5) at baseline and 5.5 (3.9) at follow-up, representing persistent improvement of -6.8 (95% CI -8.3, -5.4; p < 0.001). Secondary outcomes were improved long term, and adverse events were minor. Interval change analysis suggests stability of outcomes. 36/43 (84%) of the control participants were reevaluated, with 25 (69%) reporting subsequent surgery, with symptom and quality of life improvements. CONCLUSION: Multi-level upper airway surgery improves OSA burden with long-term maintenance of treatment effect in adults with moderate or severe OSA in whom conventional therapy failed. With an increasing concern of global antimicrobial resistance, the efforts to improve the formulation of a narrowing library of therapeutic antibiotics must be confronted. The liposomal encapsulation of antibiotics using a novel and sustainable microfluidic method has been employed in this study to address this pressing issue, via a targeted, lower-dose medical approach. The study focusses upon microfluidic parameter optimisation, formulation stability, cytotoxicity, and future applications. Particle sizes of circa. 130 nm, with viable short-term (28-day) physical stability were obtained, using two different non-cytotoxic liposomal formulations, both of which displayed suitable antibacterial efficacy. The microfluidic method allowed for high encapsulation efficiencies (≈77 %) and the subsequent in vitro release profile suggested high limits of antibiotic dissociation from the nanovessels, achieving 90% release within 72 h. In addition to the experimental data, the growing use of poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG) within lipid-based formulations is discussed in relation to anti-PEG antibodies, highlighting the key pharmacological differences between PEGylated and non-PEGylated formulations and their respective advantages and drawbacks. It's surmised that in the case of the formulations used in this study, the addition of PEG upon the liposomal membrane would still be a beneficial feature to possess owing to beneficial features such as stability, antibiotic efficacy and the capacity to further modify the liposomal membrane.

It is largely unknown how the tongue base and soft palate deform to alter the configuration of the oropharyngeal airway during respiration. This study is to address this important gap. After live sleep monitoring of 5 Yucatan and 2 Panepinto minipigs to verify obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), 8 and 4 ultrasonic crystals were implanted into the tongue base and soft palate to circumscribe a cubic and square region, respectively. The 3D and 2D dimensional changes of the circumscribed regions were measured simultaneously with electromyographic activity (EMG) of the oropharyngeal muscles during spontaneous respiration under sedated sleep. The results indicated that both obese Yucatan and Panepinto minipigs presented spontaneous OSA, but not in 3 non-obese Yucatan minipigs. During inspiration, the tongue base showed elongation in both dorsal and ventral regions but thinning and thickening in the anterior and posterior regions respectively. The widths showed opposite directions, widening in the dorsal but narrowing in the ventral regions. The soft palate expanded in both length and width. Compared to normal controls, obese/OSA ones showed similar directions of dimensional changes, but the magnitude of change was two times larger in the tongue base and soft palate, and obese/OSA Panepinto minipigs presented 10 times larger changes in all dimensions of both the tongue base and the soft palate. The opposite direction of the respiratory spatial relationship between these two structures was seen in obese/OSA as compared to normal minipigs.

For cancer therapy, paclitaxel (PX) possesses several limitations, including limited solubility and untargeted effects. Loading PX into nanoliposomes to enhance PX solubility and target their delivery as a drug delivery system has the potential to overcome these limitations. Over the other conventional method to prepare liposomes, a microfluidic system is used to formulate PX-loaded PEGylated liposomes. The impact of changing the flow rate ratio (FRR) between the aqueous and lipid phases on the particle size and polydispersity index (PDI) is investigated. Moreover, the effect of changing the polyethylene glycol (PEG) lipid ratio on the particle size, PDI, stability, encapsulation efficiency % (EE %), and release profile is studied. The physicochemical characteristics of the obtained formulation were analyzed by dynamic light scattering, FTIR spectroscopy, and AFM. This work aims to use microfluidic technology to produce PEGylated PX-loaded liposomes with a diameter of <200 nm, low PDI < 0.25 high homogeneity, and viable 28 day stability. The results show a significant impact of FRR and PEG lipid ratio on the empty liposomes' physicochemical characteristics. Among the prepared formulations, two formulations produce size-controlled, low PDI, and stable liposomes, which make them preferable for PX encapsulation. The average EE % was >90% for both formulations, and the variation in the PEG lipid ratio affected the EE % slightly; a high packing for PX was reported at different drug concentrations. A variation in the release profiles was notified for the different PEG lipid ratios.

In this study, liposomes enclosing eugenol were prepared using microfluidics. Two lipids-1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, 18:0 (DSPC) and 2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, 14:0 (DMPC)-and microfluidic chips with serpentine and Y-shaped micromixing designs were used for the liposomal formulation. Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values indicated that eugenol was more effective against Gram-negative than Gram-positive bacteria. Four different flow-rate ratios (FRR 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1) were explored. All liposomes' encapsulation efficiency (EE) was determined: 94.34% for DSPC 3:1 and 78.63% for DMPC 5:1. The highest eugenol release of 99.86% was observed at pH 4, DMPC 3:1 (Y-shaped chip). Liposomes were physically stable at 4, 20 and 37 °C for 60 days as determined by their size, polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential (ZP). The most stable liposomes were observed at FRR 5:1 for DSPC. EE, stability, and eugenol release studies proved that the liposomal formulations produced can be used as delivery vehicles to increase food safety.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Polysomnography parameters measure treatment efficacy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), such as reduction in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). However, for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, polysomnography measures do not factor in adherence and thus do not measure effectiveness. Mean disease alleviation (MDA) corrects polysomnography measures for CPAP adherence and was used to compare treatment effectiveness between CPAP and multilevel upper airway surgery. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study consisted of a consecutive sample of 331 patients with OSA managed with multilevel airway surgery as second-line treatment (N = 97) or CPAP (N = 234). Therapeutic effectiveness (MDA as % change or as corrected change in AHI) was calculated as the product of therapeutic efficacy (% or absolute change in AHI) and adherence (% time on CPAP of average nightly sleep). Cardinality and propensity score matching was utilized to manage confounding variables. RESULTS: Surgery patients achieved greater MDA % than CPAP users (67 ± 30% vs. 60 ± 28%, p = 0.04, difference 7 ± 3%, 95% confidence interval 4% to 14%) in an unmatched comparison, despite a lower therapeutic efficacy seen with surgery. Cardinality matching demonstrated comparable MDA % in surgery (64%) and CPAP (57%) groups (p = 0.14, difference 8 ± 5%, 95% confidence interval -18% to 3%). MDA measured as corrected change in AHI showed similar results. CONCLUSIONS: In adult patients with OSA, multilevel upper airway surgery and CPAP provide comparable therapeutic effectiveness on polysomnography. For patients with inadequate CPAP use, surgery should be considered.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a crucial complication of diabetes, as in a diabetic wound, each step of the physiological healing process is affected. This entails a more easily infectable wound, and delayed tissue regeneration due to the inflammation that occurs, leading to a drastic decrease in the overall patient's quality of life. As a strategy to manage DFUs, skin alternatives and wound dressings are currently receiving a lot of attention as they keep the wound environment "under control", while providing bioactive compounds that help to manage infection and inflammation and promote tissue repair. This has been made possible thanks to the advent of emerging technologies such as 3D Bioprinting to produce skin resembling constructs or microfluidics (MFs) that allows the manufacture of nanoparticles (NPs) that act as drug carriers, in a prompt and less expensive way. In the present proof-of-concept study, the possibility of combining two novel and appealing techniques in the manufacturing of wound dressings has been demonstrated for first time. The novelty of this work consists in the combination of liposomes (LPs) encapsulating the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) into a hydrogel that is further printed into a three-dimensional scaffold for wound dressing; to the knowledge of the authors this has never been done before. A grid-shaped scaffold has been produced through the coaxial 3D bioprinting technique which has allowed to combine, in one single filament, two different bioinks. The inner core of the filament is a nanocomposite hydrogel consisting of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and PEGylated LPs encapsulated with thyme oil (TO) manufactured via MFs for the first time. The outer shell of the filament, instead, is represented by a hybrid hydrogel composed of sodium alginate/cellulose nanocrystals (SA/CNC) and enriched with free TO. This provides a combination of two different release ratios of the API, a bulk release for the first 24 h thanks to the free TO in the shell of the filament and a sustained release for up to 10 days provided from the API inside the LPs. Confocal Microscopy verified the actual presence of the LPs inside the scaffold after printing and evaluation using the zone of inhibition test proved the antibacterial activity of the manufactured scaffolds against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

A new technological passage has emerged in the pharmaceutical field, concerning the management, application, and transfer of knowledge from humans to machines, as well as the implementation of advanced manufacturing and product optimisation processes. Machine Learning (ML) methods have been introduced to Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Microfluidics (MFs) to predict and generate learning patterns for precise fabrication of tailor-made pharmaceutical treatments. Moreover, regarding the diversity and complexity of personalised medicine, ML has been part of quality by design strategy, targeting towards the development of safe and effective drug delivery systems. The utilisation of different and novel ML techniques along with Internet of Things sensors in AM and MFs, have shown promising aspects regarding the development of well-defined automated procedures towards the production of sustainable and quality-based therapeutic systems. Thus, the effective data utilisation, prospects on a flexible and broader production of "on demand" treatments. In this study, a thorough overview has been achieved, concerning scientific achievements of the past decade, which aims to trigger the research interest on incorporating different types of ML in AM and MFs, as essential techniques for the enhancement of quality standards of customised medicinal applications, as well as the reduction of variability potency, throughout a pharmaceutical process.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Physician-patient interactions influence the immediate encounter and leave lasting impressions for future health care encounters. We aimed to understand patient experiences and decision-making for considering sleep surgery, in terms of barriers and communication behaviors that facilitate or hinder referral for consideration of sleep surgery management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) when continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has failed. METHODS: We employed qualitative methods, using semistructured interviews of adults with OSA who presented for sleep surgery consultation after unsatisfactory therapy with CPAP. Open-ended questions traced symptoms and progression of sleep apnea burden, trials of noninvasive OSA therapies, outcomes, and patient expectations and concerns. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis to identify themes. RESULTS: Ten adult patients with OSA were enrolled March through April 2021 and reached predominant thematic saturation. Barriers to sleep surgery consultation included: (1) delays in OSA diagnosis due to limited OSA awareness among patients or primary providers and patients' perceived inconvenience of sleep testing, (2) patients faulted for slow progress, (3) patient-reported lack of urgency by providers in troubleshooting noninvasive management options, (4) scheduling delays and waitlists, and (5) cost. Patients were receptive to noninvasive treatment options, but inadequate improvement led to frustration after multiple encounters. Patients appreciated empathetic providers who shared information through transparent and understandable explanations and who presented multiple treatment options. CONCLUSIONS: Experiences of patients with OSA highlight the need for shared decision-making through improved communication of unresolved concerns and alternative management options, including timely referral for sleep surgery consultation when indicated. OBJECTIVES: The process of 3D printing to produce microfluidic chips is becoming commonplace, due to its quality, versatility and newfound availability. In this study, a UV liquid crystal display (LCD) printer has been implemented to produce a progression of microfluidic chips for the purpose of liposomal synthesis. The emphasis of this research is to test the limitations of UV LCD printing in terms of resolution and print speed optimisation for the production of microfluidic chips. KEY FINDINGS: By varying individual channel parameters such as channel length and internal geometries, the essential channel properties for optimal liposomal formulation are being investigated to act as a basis for future experimentation including the encapsulation of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Using the uniquely designed chips, liposomes of ≈120 nm, with polydispersity index values of ≤0.12 are able to be reproducibly synthesised. CONCLUSIONS: The influence of total flow rates and lipid choice is investigated in depth, to provide further clarification on how a microfluidic setup should be optimised. In-depth explanations of the importance of each channel parameter are also explained throughout, with reference to their importance for the properties of a successful liposome.

BACKGROUND: Maternal preference for warm water immersion (WWI) and waterbirth is increasing, but adoption into obstetric guidelines and clinical practice remains limited. Concerns regarding safety and a paucity of evidence have been cited as reasons for the limited adoption and uptake. AIM: The aim was to investigate maternal and neonatal outcomes after WWI and/or waterbirth compared with land birth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted in an Australian public maternity hospital between 2019 and 2020. Maternal and neonatal outcomes for 1665 women who had a vaginal birth were studied. Primary outcome was admission to the neonatal unit (NNU). Secondary outcomes included neonatal antibiotic administration, maternal intrapartum fever, epidural use and perineal injury. Multivariate logistical regression analyses compared the outcomes between three groups: waterbirth, WWI only and land birth. RESULTS: NNU admissions for a suspected infectious condition were significantly higher in the land birth group (P = 0.035). After accounting for labour duration, epidural use and previous birth mode, no significant difference was detected between groups in the odds of NNU admission (P = 0.167). No babies were admitted to NNU with water inhalation or drowning. Women birthing on land were more likely to be febrile (2 vs 0%; P = 0.007); obstetric anal sphincter injury and postpartum haemorrhage were similar between groups. Regional analgesia use was significantly lower in the WWI group compared to the land birth group (21.02 vs 38.58%; P = <0.001). There was one cord avulsion in the waterbirth group (0.41%). CONCLUSION: Maternal and neonatal outcomes were similar between groups, with no increased risk evident in the waterbirth and WWI groups.

OBJECTIVE: There are several obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment options available to patients, including surgery and less invasive therapies. Little is known about the factors that influence patient preferences for treatment. We aimed to understand factors influencing patient experience and decision making for undergoing sleep surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective qualitative study. SETTING: Tertiary sleep surgery clinic. METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with adults who previously underwent any nasal and/or pharyngeal sleep surgery. We asked open-ended questions about their decision-making process within a preconceived thematic framework of chief OSA symptoms, expectations for recovery, and sources of information. The interviews were audio recorded and transcribed, and content was analyzed for defined, emergent, and prevalent themes. RESULTS: Ten patients were interviewed from December 11, 2020 through January 29, 2021. Six patients underwent nasal surgery, 1 underwent pharyngeal surgery, and 3 underwent staged nasal and pharyngeal procedures. All patients were beyond the acute recovery phase. Reasons for pursuing surgical consultation varied from sleep apnea burden to external factors, such as recommendations from significant others. Duration of sleep surgery consideration varied from months to years. Major concerns about sleep surgery involved anesthesia and postoperative pain. External factors influencing patients' decisions to pursue sleep surgery included family and friend support. Postoperative outcomes of surgery included patient satisfaction with decision for surgery, given OSA improvements. CONCLUSION: Understanding patient factors that influence decision making for sleep surgery may guide clinicians in patient-centered counseling that engages patients in decision making, aligning with clinical symptoms and patient preferences.

OBJECTIVES: Suicide is a leading cause of maternal mortality. Suicidality during and around the time of pregnancy can have detrimental impacts on a child's development and outcomes. This paper examines prevalence, demographic characteristics, and timing of initial contact with first responders and health services for a cohort of women who experienced suicidality during and around the time of pregnancy. METHODS: Findings are drawn from the Partners in Prevention (PiP) study, a population-wide linked data set of suicide-related attendances by police or paramedics in Queensland, Australia. A sub-cohort of women was identified, who were between 6 months preconception and 2 years postpartum at the time of a suicide-related contact with police or paramedics (PiP-Maternal). Findings are compared to other girls and women who had a suicide-related contact with police or paramedics (PiP-Female). Prevalence, demographic characteristics, timing of contact with first responders and health services, re-presentations, and mortality are reported. RESULTS: The PiP-Maternal cohort comprised 3020 individuals and 3400 births. Women in the PiP-Maternal cohort were younger, more likely to be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and live outside of a major city than the PiP-Female cohort. There were high rates of out-of-hours calls to police and ambulance, and similar perceived seriousness of the call between women in the PiP-Maternal and PiP-Female cohorts. Women in the PiP-Maternal cohort were less likely to be admitted to an emergency department within 24 hours, even after matching on covariates. Prevalence of suicidality for women who were pregnant and up to 2 years postpartum was 1.32% (95% CI = [1.27, 1.37]). CONCLUSION: Vulnerabilities and high rates of contact with police or paramedics, coupled with lower levels of follow-up, highlight the critical need to improve service responses for women with mental health needs during these phases of life.

Nanotechnology applications have emerged as one of the most actively researched areas in recent years. As a result, substantial study into nanoparticulate lipidic systems and liposomes (LPs) has been conducted. Regardless of the advantages, various challenges involving traditional manufacturing processes have hampered their expansion. Here, the combination of microfluidic technology (MF) and 3D printing (3DP) digital light processing (DLP) was fruitfully investigated in the creation of novel, previously unexplored "diamond shaped" devices suitable for the production of LPs carrying lysozyme as model drug. Computer-aided design (CAD) software was used designing several MF devices with significantly multiple and diverse geometries. These were printed using a high-performance DLP 3DP, resulting in extremely high-resolution chips that were tested to optimize the experimental condition of MF-based LPs. Monodisperse narrow-sized lysozyme-loaded PEGylated LPs were produced using in-house devices. The developed formulations succumbed to stability tests to determine their consistency, and then an encapsulation efficacy (EE) study was performed, yielding good findings. The in vitro release study indicated that lysozyme-loaded LPs could release up to 93% of the encapsulated cargo within 72 h. Therefore, the proficiency of the association between MF and 3DP was demonstrated, revealing a potential growing synergy.

Nanoparticle technology has promising effects on multiple therapeutic purposes, particularly in controlling drug delivery as Drug Delivery System. The unique properties of nanoparticles significantly enhance drug delivery, efficiency, and toxicity. For cancer therapy, controlling chemotherapy delivery can increase the drug concentration in the desired locations, improve drug efficacy, and limit drug toxicity. Liposomes are used in this project to encapsulate paclitaxel due to their ability to carry hydrophobic molecules, low toxicity, and prolonged half-life. Among the multiple liposome preparation methods, microfluidic technology was used to produce liposomes. Microfluidics excels in other conventional methods by offering a high-level control of the process's parameters, which help control particle size, size distribution, and physiochemical properties. This project aims to produce paclitaxel-loaded liposomes with a diameter below 200 nm with low polydispersity index, high homogeneity, and good stability. Different lipid types (DMPC, DPPC, DSPC, and DOPC) were used with different ratios to investigate their impact on empty liposome formulation. Alongside changing the different microfluidic parameters including the total flow ratio and flow rate ratio to study their effects on liposomes' physiochemical properties. The obtained formulations were tested to analyse different physiochemical properties (DLS, FTIR) and stability studies. DMPC and DPPC are determined to study their encapsulation efficiency and in vitro drug release of paclitaxel at total flow rate 1 ml min-1 and 1:4 flow rate ratio. The paclitaxel-loaded liposomes are subjected to the same physiochemical characteristics and stability study. Promising encapsulation efficiency was reported from both DPPC and DMPC, and sustained drug release was observed.

INTRODUCTION: Covid-19, alongside previous pandemics, has highlighted the need for the continued development of technologies that are at our disposal. Emerging technologies are those that show true promise in achieving such a goal and have begun to form sturdy independent research areas. Technological advances in healthcare must continually develop to ensure that the world is prepared for any future diseases that may ensue. As such, a strategic review into 43 manuscripts since 2019 has been conducted to determine the prominence of emerging technologies since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. AREAS COVERED: Relating to their use in a pandemic state, additive manufacturing (AM), biofabrication, microfluidics, biomedical microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS), and artificial intelligence (AI) are described. Applications over the past 2-3 years, as well as future developments, are considered throughout. EXPERT OPINION: All the technologies mentioned in this review are sure to develop further, having shown their importance and value during the covid-19 pandemic. As research continues within the area, their efficacy will increase to the point where it likely will become gold standard for pandemic control. Combining certain technologies mentioned has also proved to have had great success in improving the final results obtained.

Salmonella is a global health threat, with pig production being one of the main sources of human salmonellosis. The current study investigated the antivirulence properties of geraniol for inhibiting the in vitro colonization of Salmonella. The minimum inhibitory (MIC) and bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of geraniol against Salmonella typhimurium followed by the sub-MIC of geraniol were determined. Results provided clear evidence that geraniol at 1/8 MIC can be used as an effective, non-toxic antivirulence compound to inhibit virulence factors (motility, adhesion, and invasiveness) affecting the colonization of S. typhimurium on IPEC-J2 cells. Additionally, the findings signified that microfluidics is an emerging technology suitable for the preparation of stable liposomes with a small size (<200 nm) and high encapsulation efficiency (EE) of up to 92.53%, which can act as effective carriers of geraniol into the pig gastrointestinal tract (GIT), targeting Salmonella, preventing colonization, and thus increasing the safety of the food supply chain.
