Research from the United States which explores events related to the surgical count has identified that there are opportunities to review our practice in order to reduce risks to surgical patients. The Safe Surgery Saves Lives Campaign highlights this aspect of perioperative patient safety, ensuring that poor processes and poor communication, often the reasons for retained surgical items, become part of the team 'sign-out' at the end of every operation.

The theme of last year's Congress was Realising Potential. The road to success is always under construction, and there are many choices that we make along the way, such as our partner in life, career, or how we spend spare time. A fortuitous choice of mine was to get involved with the Education Committee of NATN in 1994, as many of my lasting friendships have come as a result of my involvement with this organisation. Much of the richness and variety of life comes from the people we engage with and the networks which we develop.

The Code of Practice in the Health Act 2006 will assist NHS organisations plan and implement how they can prevent and control healthcare associated infections. Estates and facilities managers need to closely adhere to the Code, which has the potential of yielding significant benefits.

A request to the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN), by some nurses in Papua New Guinea led to Kate Woodhead and Phyllis Davis running a workshop in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. They set out to help the perioperative nurses establish their own organisation to advise the government on policy which affected their service, and to serve as a forum for perioperative education and motivation. This article describes the process, the enthusiasm which greeted them and the mechanisms by which the Papua New Guinea Perioperative Nurses Association came into being.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) chooses a theme each year to heighten awareness of an issue facing nurses working all over the world, and uses International Nurses Day, 12 May, to focus attention on the plight of patients' suffering. This year's theme is Fighting AIDS stigma: caring for all. This article looks at the current situation with regards to HIV/AIDS and how it affects the public, patients and healthcare staff.
