Stroke is recognized as a network communication disorder. Advances in neuroimaging technologies have enhanced our comprehension of dynamic cerebral alterations. However, different levels of motor function impairment after stroke may have different patterns of brain reorganization. Abnormal and adaptive patterns of brain activity in mild-to-moderate motor function impairments after stroke remain still underexplored. We aim to identify dynamic patterns of network remodeling in stroke patients with mild-to-moderate impairment of motor function. fMRI data were obtained from 30 stroke patients and 31 healthy controls to establish a spatiotemporal multilayer modularity model. Then, graph-theoretic measures, including modularity, flexibility, cohesion, and disjointedness, were calculated to quantify dynamic reconfiguration. Our findings reveal that the post-stroke brain exhibited higher modular organization, as well as heightened disjointedness, compared to HCs. Moreover, analyzing from the network level, we found increased disjointedness and flexibility in the Default mode network (DMN), indicating that brain regions tend to switch more frequently and independently between communities and the dynamic changes were mainly driven by DMN. Notably, modified functional dynamics positively correlated with motor performance in patients with mild-to-moderate motor impairment. Collectively, our research uncovered patterns of dynamic community reconstruction in multilayer networks following stroke. Our findings may offer new insights into the complex reorganization of neural function in post-stroke brain.

Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) had been associated with asthma in observational studies, but the effect of OSA on the onset of asthma in childhood or adulthood remains unclear, and the causal inferences have not been confirmed. This study aims to investigate the potential causal association between OSA with asthma, including different age-of-onset subtypes, providing reliable basis for the clinical treatment of OSA and asthma. Patients and Methods: Causality between OSA and asthma was assessed using a two-sample bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. OSA data were obtained from the FinnGen consortium R9, while asthma and its subtypes (adult-onset asthma, child-onset asthma, and moderate-to-severe asthma) were sourced from the IEU OpenGWAS project. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was chosen as the primary analysis and was complemented by various sensitivity analyses. The MR-PRESSO outlier test was employed to systematically identify and remove outlier variants, mitigating heterogeneity and potential effects of horizontal pleiotropy. Results: The MR analyses provided evidence of genetically predicted OSA having a promoting effect on child-onset asthma (OR,1.49; 95% CI, 1.05-2.11; P=0.025) and moderate-to-severe asthma (OR,1.03; 95% CI, 1.00-1.06; P=0.046). However, no causal association between OSA with asthma and adult-onset asthma was observed. Conclusion: Our study revealed a causal association between OSA and child asthma, but not in adults. Moderate-to-severe asthma may have a potential promoting effect on OSA. These findings underscore the importance of age-specific considerations in managing asthma and suggests the need for personalized approaches in clinical practice.

High-voltage ultrahigh-Ni cathodes (LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2, x ≥ 0.9) can significantly enhance the energy density and cost-effectiveness of Li-ion batteries beyond current levels. However, severe Li-Ni antisite defects and their undetermined dynamic evolutions during high-voltage cycling limit the further development of these ultrahigh-Ni cathodes. In this study, we quantify the dynamic evolutions of the Li-Ni antisite defect using operando neutron diffraction and reveal its coupling relationship with anionic redox, another critical challenge restricting ultrahigh-Ni cathodes. We detect a clear Ni migration coupled with an unstable oxygen lattice, which accompanies the oxidation of oxygen anions at high voltages. Based on these findings, we propose that minimized Li-Ni antisite defects and controlled Ni migrations are essential for achieving stable high-voltage cycling structures in ultrahigh-Ni cathodes. This is further demonstrated by the optimized ultrahigh-Ni cathode, where reduced dynamic evolutions of the Li-Ni antisite defect effectively inhibit the anionic redox, enhancing the 4.5 V cycling stability.

Over 10,000 metric-ton broiler livers are produced annually in Taiwan. Concerning unpleasant odor and healthy issue, broiler livers are not attractive to consumers. Although the patented chicken-liver hydrolysates (CLHs) through pepsin digestion possess several biofunctionalities, there is no study on hepatoprotection of CLH-based formula capsule (GBHP01) against binge drinking (Whiskey, 50% Alc./Vol.). GBHP01 led to an accelerated blood-alcohol clearance in rats, as evidenced by lowering blood-alcohol increment within 0 to 4 h, increasing blood-alcohol decrement within 4 to 8 h, and smaller blood alcohol concentration areas under the curve (BAC AUC) in the 8-h period (p < 0.05). The ameliorative effects of GBHP01 against binge drinking in rats over 6 wk were attributed to accelerated alcohol metabolism by further increasing alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities while downregulating cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) protein expression, elevating antioxidant capacity, decreasing zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) protein decrement and serum endotoxin, and reducing inflammation related protein levels, that is, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and proinflammatory cytokines. The development of CLH supplements could not only enhance the added value of broiler livers through nutraceutical development but also offer a strategy to maximize the utilization of poultry processing residues, as shown in this study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is closely related to obesity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of a novel anthropometric indicator weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) with UI. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2018. Weighted multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between WWI and three types of UI [stress UI (SUI), urgency UI (UUI), and mixed UI (MUI)]. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Delong et al.'s test were utilized for comparison of the predictive capability for UI between WWI and body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC). RESULTS: A total of 41,614 participants were included in this study, of whom 23.57% had SUI, 19.24% had UUI, and 9.43% had MUI. In the fully adjusted model, WWI was positively associated with three types of UI [SUI: odds ratio (OR) = 1.19, 95%Confidence interval (CI) 1.13-1.25; UUI: OR = 1.18, 95%CI 1.13-1.24; MUI: OR = 1.19, 95%CI 1.11-1.27, all p < 0.001]. Compared to the lowest WWI interval, the positive correlation between WWI and UI still existed in the highest WWI group after converting WWI to a categorical variable by quartiles (SUI: OR = 1.52, 95%CI 1.35-1.71, p < 0.001; UUI: OR = 1.50, 95%CI 1.33-1.69, p < 0.001; MUI: OR = 1.55, 95%CI 1.32-1.83, p < 0.001). WWI had a stronger prediction for three types of UI than BMI and WC (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: A higher WWI was linked with an increased likelihood of three types of UI (SUI, UUI, and MUI) in the United State population. Compared to BMI and WC, WWI had a stronger predictive power for UI. WWI may be a better adiposity parameter for evaluating UI.

The role of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) in predicting all-cause and cause-specific mortalities remains elusive. This study included 384,420 adults from the Shanghai cohort and the UK Biobank (UKB) cohort. After multivariable adjustment in the Cox models, FPG ≥7.0 mmol/L or HbA1c ≥ 6.5% increased the risk of all-cause mortality, FPG ≥5.6 mmol/L or HbA1c ≥ 6.5% increased CVD-related mortality, and higher or lower TyG index increased all-cause and CVD-related mortalities in the Shanghai cohort; FPG ≥5.6 mmol/L, HbA1c ≥ 5.7%, TyG index <8.31 or ≥9.08 increased the risks of all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related mortalities in the UKB cohort. FPG or HbA1c increased the discrimination of the conventional risk model in predicting all-cause and CVD-related mortalities in both cohorts. Thus, increased levels of FPG and HbA1c and U-shaped TyG index increase the risks of all-cause especially CVD-related mortalities.

Improving the practicality of rechargeable zinc-air batteries relies heavily on the development of oxygen electrode catalysts that are low-cost, durable, and highly efficient in performing dual functions. In the present study, a catalyst with atomic Ce and Co distribution on a nitrogen-doped carbon substrate was prepared by doping the rare earth elements Ce and Co into a metal-organic framework precursor. Rare earth element Ce, known for its unique structure and excellent oxygen affinity, was utilized to regulate the catalytic activity. The catalyst prepared in this study demonstrated an exceptional electrocatalytic performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm-2, the catalyst exhibited an overpotential of 340 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which was lower than that of commercial IrO2 (370 mV), while achieving a half-wave potential of 0.79 V for the process of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), exhibiting a similar level of effectiveness as commercially accessible Pt/C catalysts (0.8 V). The catalyst's porous structure, interconnected three-dimensional carbon network, and large specific surface area are the factors contributing to the significant improvement in catalytic performance. Furthermore, in comparison to commercial Pt/C+IrO2, the catalyst exhibited good cycling stability and high efficiency in rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

Under the dual constraints of economic development and ecological carrying capacity, it is necessary to explore more technical means to achieve carbon neutrality and peak in China. Plants are important carriers of terrestrial and marine carbon sink systems, whereas phytoremediation is also a scientific method to remedy environmental pollution. However, the current studies mostly focus on the single aspect of plant carbon sequestration (including both the reduction of pollutant concentrations in environmental media and degradation of pollutants) or plant pollution reduction, without considering the dual benefits of plant pollution reduction and carbon sequestration. In order to explore the carbon neutral effect of plants, we focused on the pollution reduction and carbon sequestration effect of carbon neutral plants and its progress and evaluated the pollution reduction and carbon sequestration potential of carbon neutral plants and other organisms (such as animals and soil microorganisms) and environmental functional materials. The mechanisms underlying the synergistic coupling of carbon neutral plants and animals, microorganisms, and environmental functional materials and ecosystems in reducing pollution and carbon sequestration were also explored. Finally, we proposed constructive prospects for future research on the effects of carbon neutral plants on pollution reduction and carbon sink.

N-Alkoxyphthalimides, one kind of phthalimide derivative, have great importance in synthesis, mainly used as free radical precursors. While the phthalimide unit, for a long time, was treated as part of the waste stream. Construction of C-N bonds has always been a hot spot, especially in reductive cross-coupling. Herein, a nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling reaction of N-methoxyphthalimides with alkyl halides is described, where N-methoxyphthalimides serve as nitrogen electrophiles. This tactic provides a new approach to construct C-N bonds under mild neutral conditions. Alkyl chlorides, bromides, iodides, and sulfonates are all fit to this transformation. Moreover, the reaction could tolerate a broad substrate scope, especially base-sensitive functional groups (boron or silicon groups), as well as competitive nucleophilic groups (phenols and amides), which are incompatible with traditional Gabriel synthesis under basic conditions, demonstrating a complementary role of this work to Gabriel synthesis.

Inhibition of nucleic acid targets is mediated by Argonaute (Ago) proteins guided by RNA or DNA. Although the mechanisms underpinning the functions of eukaryotic and "long" prokaryotic Ago proteins (pAgos) are well understood, those for short pAgos remain enigmatic. Here, we determine two cryoelectron microscopy structures of short pAgos in association with the NADase-domain-containing protein Sir2-APAZ from Geobacter sulfurreducens (GsSir2/Ago): the guide RNA-target DNA-loaded GsSir2/Ago quaternary complex (2.58 Å) and the dimer of the quaternary complex (2.93Å). These structures show that the nucleic acid binding causes profound conformational changes that result in disorder or partial dissociation of the Sir2 domain, suggesting that it adopts a NADase-active conformation. Subsequently, two RNA-/DNA-loaded GsSir2/Ago complexes form a dimer through their MID domains, further enhancing NADase activity through synergistic effects. The findings provide a structural basis for short-pAgo-mediated defense against invading nucleic acids.

Cosmic radiation exposure is one of the important health concerns for aircrews. In this work, we constructed a back propagation neural network model for the real-time and rapid assessment of cosmic radiation exposure to the public in aviation. The multi-dimensional dataset for this neural network was created from modeling the process of cosmic ray transportation in magnetic field by geomagnetic cutoff rigidity method and air shower simulation by a Monte Carlo based Geant4 code. The dataset was characterized by parameters including cosmic ray energy spectrum, Kp-index, coordinated universal time, altitude, latitude, and longitude. The effective dose and dose rate was finally converted from the particle fluxes at flight position by the neural network. This work shows a good agreement with other models from International Civil Aviation Organization. It is also illustrated that the effective dose rate by galactic cosmic ray is <10 µSv h-1 and the value during ground level enhancement (GLE) 42 is 4 ~ 10 times larger on the routes calculated in this work. In GLE 69, the effective dose rate reaches several mSv h-1 in the polar region. Based on this model, a real-time warning system is achieved.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are vital components of the innate immune system, serving as the first line of defense against pathogens by recognizing a wide array of molecular patterns. This review summarizes the critical roles of TLRs in immune surveillance and disease pathogenesis, focusing on their structure, signaling pathways, and implications in various disorders. We discuss the molecular intricacies of TLRs, including their ligand specificity, signaling cascades, and the functional consequences of their activation. The involvement of TLRs in infectious diseases, autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and cancer is explored, highlighting their potential as therapeutic targets. We also examine recent advancements in TLR research, such as the development of specific agonists and antagonists, and their application in immunotherapy and vaccine development. Furthermore, we address the challenges and controversies surrounding TLR research and outline future directions, including the integration of computational modeling and personalized medicine approaches. In conclusion, TLRs represent a promising frontier in medical research, with the potential to significantly impact the development of novel therapeutic strategies for a wide range of diseases.

The genus Hepacivirus comprises a diverse range of genetically distinct viruses that infect both mammalian and non-mammalian hosts, with some posing significant risks to human and animal health. Members of the genus Hepacivirus are typically classified into fourteen species (Hepacivirus A-N), with ongoing discoveries of novel hepaciviruses like Hepacivirus P and Hepacivirus Q. In this study, a novel Hepacivirus was identified in duck liver samples collected from live poultry markets in Hunan province, China, using unbiased high-throughput sequencing and meta-transcriptomic analysis. Through sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis, it was determined that this newly discovered Hepacivirus belongs to a new subspecies of Hepacivirus Q. Moreover, molecular screening revealed the widespread circulation of this novel virus among duck populations in various regions of Hunan province, with an overall prevalence of 13.3%. These findings significantly enhence our understanding of the genetic diversity and evolution of hepaciviruses, emphasizing the presence of genetically diverse hepaciviruses duck populations in China. Given the broad geographical distribution and relatively high positive rate, further investigations are essential to explore any potential associations between Hepacivirus Q and duck-related diseases.

Multiferroic materials, which simultaneously exhibit ferroelectricity and magnetism, have attracted substantial attention due to their fascinating physical properties and potential technological applications. With the trends towards device miniaturization, there is an increasing demand for the persistence of multiferroicity in single-layer materials at elevated temperatures. Here, we report high-temperature multiferroicity in single-layer CuCrSe2, which hosts room-temperature ferroelectricity and 120 K ferromagnetism. Notably, the ferromagnetic coupling in single-layer CuCrSe2 is enhanced by the ferroelectricity-induced orbital shift of Cr atoms, which is distinct from both types I and II multiferroicity. These findings are supported by a combination of second-harmonic generation, piezo-response force microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, magnetic, and Hall measurements. Our research provides not only an exemplary platform for delving into intrinsic magnetoelectric interactions at the single-layer limit but also sheds light on potential development of electronic and spintronic devices utilizing two-dimensional multiferroics.

Aflatoxins (AFs) including AFB1, AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2 are widely found in agriculture products, and AFB1 is considered one of the most toxic and harmful mycotoxins. Herein, a highly sensitive (at the pg mL-1 level) and group-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of AFB1 in agricultural and aquiculture products was developed. The AFB1 derivative containing a carboxylic group was synthesized and covalently linked to bovine serum albumin (BSA). The AFB1-BSA conjugate was used as an immunogen to immunize mice. A high-quality monoclonal antibody (mAb) against AFB1 was produced by hybridoma technology, and the mAb-based ELISA for AFB1 was established. IC50 and limit of detection (LOD) of the ELISA for AFB1 were 90 pg mL-1 and 18 pg mL-1, respectively. The cross-reactivities (CRs) of the assay with AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2 were 23.6%, 42.5%, and 1.9%, respectively, revealing some degree of group specificity. Corn flour, wheat flour, and crab roe samples spiked with different contents of AFB1 were subjected to ELISA procedures. The recoveries and relative standard deviation (RSD) of the ELISA for AFB1 in spiked samples were 78.3-116.6% and 1.49-13.21% (n = 3), respectively. Wheat flour samples spiked with the mixed AF (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2) standard solution were measured by ELISA and LC-MS/MS simultaneously. It was demonstrated that the proposed ELISA can be used as a screening method for evaluation of AFs (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2) in wheat flour samples.

Moiré superlattices, consisting of rotationally aligned 2D atomically thin layers, provide a highly novel platform for the study of correlated quantum phenomena. However, reliable and efficient construction of moiré superlattices is challenging because of difficulties to accurately angle-align small exfoliated 2D layers and the need to shun wet-transfer processes. Here, efficient and precise construction of various moiré superlattices is demonstrated by picking up and stacking large-area 2D mono- or few-layer crystals with predetermined crystal axes, made possible by a gold-template-assisted mechanical exfoliation method. The exfoliated 2D layers are semiconductors, superconductors, or magnets and their high quality is confirmed by photoluminescence and Raman spectra and by electrical transport measurements of fabricated field-effect transistors and Hall devices. Twisted homobilayers with angle-twisting accuracy of ≈0.3°, twisted heterobilayers with sub-degree angle-alignment accuracy, and multilayer superlattices are precisely constructed and characterized by their moiré patterns, interlayer excitons, and second harmonic generation. The present study paves the way for exploring emergent phenomena in moiré superlattices.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacteria bloodstream infections are common in immunocompromised people and usually have disastrous consequences. As the primary phagocytes in the bloodstream, monocytes and neutrophils play critical roles in the fight against bloodstream mycobacteria infections. In contrast to macrophages, the responses of monocytes infected with the mycobacteria have been less investigated. RESULTS: In this study, we first established a protocol for infection of non-adherent monocyte-like THP-1 cells (i.e. without the differentiation induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) by bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). Via the protocol, we were then capable of exploring the global transcriptomic profiles of non-adherent THP-1 cells infected with BCG, and found that NF-κB, MAPK and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways were enhanced, as well as some inflammatory chemokine/cytokine genes (e.g. CCL4, CXCL10, TNF and IL-1ß) were up-regulated. Surprisingly, the Akt-HIF-mTOR signaling pathway was also activated, which induces trained immunity. In this in vitro infection model, increased cytokine responses to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) restimulation, higher cell viability, and decreased Candida albicans loads were observed. CONCLUSIONS: We have first characterized the transcriptomic profiles of BCG-infected non-adherent THP-1 cells, and first developed a trained immunity in vitro model of the cells.

The explosive growth of massive-data storage and the demand for ultrafast data processing require innovative memory devices with exceptional performance. 2D materials and their van der Waal heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces hold great promise for innovations in memory devices. Here, this work presents non-volatile, floating-gate memory devices with all functional layers made of 2D materials, achieving ultrafast programming/erasing speeds (20 ns), high extinction ratios (up to 108), and multi-bit storage capability. These devices also exhibit long-term data retention exceeding 10 years, facilitated by a high gate-coupling ratio (GCR) and atomically sharp interfaces between functional layers. Additionally, this work demonstrates the realization of an "OR" logic gate on a single-device unit by synergistic electrical and optical operations. The present results provide a solid foundation for next-generation ultrahigh-speed, ultralong lifespan, non-volatile memory devices, with a potential for scale-up manufacturing and flexible electronics applications.

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver is a rare mesenchymal tumor with a highly malignant potential. It occurs almost exclusively in the pediatric population and typically has a poor outcome. Although previous studies have reported dismal prognoses, recent advances in combined treatment modalities, e.g., surgery and chemotherapy, have given cause for optimism. Even in those diseases not amenable to complete surgical resection or refractory diseases, other treatment modalities, such as liver transplant, have yielded promising results. This paper provides a review of the current treatment modalities for hepatic undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma in children.

This comprehensive review delves into the multifaceted roles of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in leukemia, focusing on their interactions within the bone marrow microenvironment and their impact on leukemia pathogenesis, progression, and treatment resistance. MSCs, characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell types and modulate the immune system, are integral to the BM niche, influencing hematopoietic stem cell maintenance and functionality. This review extensively explores the intricate relationship between MSCs and leukemic cells in acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. This review also addresses the potential clinical applications of MSCs in leukemia treatment. MSCs' role in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, their antitumor effects, and strategies to disrupt chemo-resistance are discussed. Despite their therapeutic potential, the dual nature of MSCs in promoting and inhibiting tumor growth poses significant challenges. Further research is needed to understand MSCs' biological mechanisms in hematologic malignancies and develop targeted therapeutic strategies. This in-depth exploration of MSCs in leukemia provides crucial insights for advancing treatment modalities and improving patient outcomes in hematologic malignancies.
