Previous research has revealed two different old/new effects, the early mid-frontal old/new effect (a.k.a., FN400) and the late parietal old/new effect (a.k.a., LPC), which relate to familiarity and recollection processes, respectively. Although associative recognition is thought to be more based on recollection, recent studies have confirmed that familiarity can make a great contribution when the items of a pair are unitized. However, it remains unclear whether the old/new effects are sensitive to the nature of different semantic relations. The current ERP (event-related potentials) study aimed to address this, where picture pairs of thematic, taxonomic, and unrelated relations served as stimuli and participants were required to discriminate the pair type: intact, rearranged, "old + new", or new. We confirmed both FN400 and LPC. Our findings, by comparing the occurrence and the amplitudes of these two components, implicate that the neural activity of associative recognition is sensitive to the semantic relation of stimuli and depends more on stimulus properties, that the familiarity of a single item can impact the neural activities in discriminating associative pairs, and that the interval length between encoding and test modulates the familiarity of unrelated pairs. In addition, the dissociation between FN400 and LPC reinforces the dual-process models.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is associated with poor prognosis in cardiovascular disease patients or in diabetic patients. However, the relationship between malnutrition and clinical outcomes in diabetic patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is not well known. The aim of this study is to report the prevalence and prognostic consequences of malnutrition in diabetic patients with CAD. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score applied to 12,898 consecutive diabetic patients with CAD. The association between malnutrition and long-term all-cause mortality was examined using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS: According to CONUT score, 60.5% patients suffered from malnutrition; 46.4%, 13.2%, and 0.9% patients had mild, moderate, and severe malnutrition, respectively. During a median follow-up of 4.88 (2.83-7.51) years, 1973 (15.3%) patients died. After adjustment for confounders, malnutrition was associated with significantly increased risk for long-term all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio for mild malnutrition and moderate to severe malnutrition, respectively: 1.38 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.07-1.77]; P value = 0.012 and 1.63 [95% CI 1.18-2.24]; P value = 0.003). A similar association was observed around subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Malnutrition is common in diabetic patients with CAD and is strongly associated with increased mortality. It is necessary to adequately assess the nutritional status and take the effective nutritional guidance to improve the prognosis of diabetic patients with CAD.

In the present study, effect of Sophora subprosrate polysaccharide on PCV2 infection-induced inflammation and histone acetylation modification in swine alveolar macrophage 3D4/2 cells was described for the first time. The relationship between histone acetylation modifications and inflammation response was investigated. The results showed that PCV2 infection induced inflammation by promoting the secretion of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-10 in 3D4/2 cells. The production of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 and their mRNA expression levels markedly decreased while the level and mRNA expression of IL-10 were elevated when the cells were treated with Sophora subprosrate polysaccharide. The SSP also decreased the activity of HATs, histone H3 acetylation (Ac-H3) and histone H4 acetylation (Ac-H4), p65 phosphorylation (P-p65) in the cells infected with PCV2 while HDACs activity was down-regulated, which involved in the inhibitory effect of SSP on histone acetylation and NF-κB signaling pathways activation. Down-regulation of HAT1 mRNA expression and up-regulation of HDAC1 mRNA expression further support the inhibitory effect of SSP on histone acetylation. In conclusion, Sophora subprosrate polysaccharide antagonized inflammatory responses induced by PCV2, via mechanisms involved in histone acetylation and NF-κB signaling pathways.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of some Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) agents on bone resorption and morphometric features of osteoclasts as well as their relationships. TCM ShengGuZaiZaoSan and XianLingGuBao, were used to treat the experimental fracture. Thirty 6-month-old Chinchilla rabbits were used for the establishment of animal models each with a 3 mm bone defect in the middle of left radius as well as of right radius. These models were divided randomly into 3 groups : ShengGuZaiZaoSan Group (Group A), XianLingGuBao groups (Group B) and control-group (Group C). Every group was further divided into 2 subgroups: a former sacrificed group (14 days after operation) and a latter sacrificed group (31 days after operation). After the rabbits being killed, the samples of their undecalcified calli were subjected to the morphometry study of bone resorption and osteoclasts. Group A had more bone resorption, compared with Group B and C. Both Groups A and B exhibited some changed morphometric features of osteoclasts as compared with Group C (P < 0.05). Simple correlation analysis indicated that bone resorption is mainly correlated with osteoclast numbers, and that in individual group, bone resorption is correlated with osteoclast form factor, area and mean photodensity (P < 0.05). These allow us to conclude that ShengGuZaiZaoSan can increase bone resorption and accelerate bone remodeling by increasing osteoclast numbers at the former stage and can enhance osteoclast function at the latter stage. These changes are beneficial to fracture healing.
