RESUMO

Background: Previous studies have suggested that point-of-care ultrasound could help to evaluate and diagnose pediatric skull fracture for the closed scalp hematoma from blunt trauma. However, relevant data in Chinese children are missing, especially in children 0-6 years old. Objectives: Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of point-of-care ultrasound to diagnose skull fracture in children 0-6 years old with scalp hematoma in China. Methods: We performed a prospective observational study and screened children 0-6 years old with closed scalp hematoma and a Glasgow coma scale of 14-15 at Hospital in China. Enrolled children (N = 152) were first evaluated for skull fracture with point-of-care ultrasound by the emergency physician and then received a head computed tomography scan. Results: The point-of-care ultrasound examination and computed tomography scan revealed skull fracture in 13 (8.6%) and 12 (7.9%) children, respectively. The kappa test showed a satisfactory agreement between two examinations (P < 0.0001), with kappa = 0.87 (95% confidence interval, i.e., 95% CI, [0.69, 1.00]) and area under the curve = 0.95 (95% CI [0.86, 1], P < 0.0001). The point-of-care ultrasound examination had the sensitivity of 91.7% (95% CI [62.5%, 100%]), specificity of 98.6% (95% CI [94.6%, 100%]), positive predictive value of 84.6% (95% CI [56.5%, 96.9%]), negative predictive value of 99.2% (95% CI [95.6%, 100%]), and accuracy of 98.0% (95% CI [94.1%, 99.6%]). Conclusions: While our study is preliminary in nature, our findings may guide future larger studies in assessing the utility of point-of-care ultrasound examination in diagnosing skull fractures in children with scalp hematoma from minor head trauma.

Sexual dimorphism has commonly been found in many species. The phenotypes of Salix matsudana females and males are different under salinity stress. An F1 population was selected to compare the differences between males and females. As a result, males showed stronger roots and heavier dry weights than females. The unique molecular mechanisms of males and females under salinity stress were further analyzed based on the root transcriptome of males and females. Both males and females up-regulated systemic acquired resistance genes, such as ADH and oxygenase-related genes, to resist salt. Moreover, many other abiotic stress response genes were up-regulated in males to adjust to salinity stress, while females showed more down-regulation of nitrogen metabolism-related genes to decrease the harm from salinity stress. The research on salinity tolerance in Salix matsudana males and females would help to further understand sexual dimorphism under selection pressure and provide benefits to the ecological environment.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to the impaired identification of the second target (T2) when presented within approximately 500ms after the first target (T1). Although the AB is eliminated when two targets can be integrated into a single compound word, it remains unclear whether the lexico-semantic organization of translation equivalents modulates the magnitude of the AB. In the present study, we examined consecutive targets' processing in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm using Chinese-English translation equivalents and non-translation equivalents. The results demonstrated that an overall presence of the AB effect was observed when T1 and T2 were non-translation equivalents. However, the AB effect disappeared completely when the two target words were translation equivalents. Taken together, these findings suggest that Chinese-English bilinguals are translating intentionally between Mandarin and English, which facilitates lexical access to word meaning from the two languages at the initial stages of visual word processing. Furthermore, such lexico-semantic activation of translation equivalents attributes to the elimination of the AB.

The present study investigated the electrophysiological correlates of morpheme transposition in two-character Chinese compound words (canonical words and transposed words) and pseudowords at a very short stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) of 83 ms, employing a dual-target rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. Event-related potential (ERP) results showed that, relative to pseudowords, canonical words elicited increased positivity or decreased negativity in ERP amplitudes beginning with the 200-300 ms (P200) and continuing through the 300-450 ms (N400) into the late time window of 450-600 ms (late positive component, LPC). Critically, the morpheme transposition effects were found on the N400 component and LPC, with larger N400 and smaller LPC amplitudes in the transposed words than in the canonical words. Taken together, these results demonstrated that morpheme transposition hindered the semantic extraction and combinatorial processing of the whole word entities in very rapid succession, as reflected by the modulations of N400 and LPC.

Teachers' adaptive expertise (TAE) has received increasing attention in the current English as foreign language (EFL) teaching field, however, it has seldom been examined with adaptive practices by teachers in on-going classes among existing literature. Adopting a mixed-method design with data triangulation, this study was conducted to explore the complexity of teachers' adaptive expertise (TAE) and adaptive teaching practices that an EAP writing teacher demonstrated in academic writing courses, from a Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) perspective. Semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and questionnaires were arranged to collect qualitative and quantitative data from an EAP writing teacher and 43 EFL learners in a Chinese university. Thematic analysis and SPSS were mainly used in the current work for data analysis. Our findings confirmed (1) the complexity of TAE and ATP with specific features of non-linearity, interconnectedness, and self-organization, which are classic CDST characteristics; (2) the TAE evolved with meta-cognitive, cognitive, affective and social components that are intertwined and contributed to the teacher's adaptive teaching practices (ATP) in her academic writing course; (3) being facilitated by TAE, the teacher's adaptive teaching practices significantly enhanced EFL learners, learning motivation of academic writing and their learning efficiency. Findings of the current work pave the way for future studies in researching TAE and ATP with a thorough consideration of language teachers, students and contexts from the CDST perspective. Moreover, pedagogical contributions are highlighted through the detailed examinations of the EAP writing teacher's ATP, including the class design, teaching plans, and methods, which would be fruitful for the development of tertiary EAP writing research.
