RESUMO

Metastasis remains a major challenge in the successful management of malignant diseases. The liver is a major site of metastatic disease and a leading cause of death from gastrointestinal malignancies such as colon, stomach, and pancreatic cancers, as well as melanoma, breast cancer, and sarcoma. As an important factor that influences the development of metastatic liver cancer, alternative splicing drives the diversity of RNA transcripts and protein subtypes, which may provide potential to broaden the target space. In particular, the dysfunction of splicing factors and abnormal expression of splicing variants are associated with the occurrence, progression, aggressiveness, and drug resistance of cancers caused by the selective splicing of specific genes. This review is the first to provide a detailed summary of the normal splicing process and alterations that occur during metastatic liver cancer. It will cover the role of alternative splicing in the mechanisms of metastatic liver cancer by examining splicing factor changes, abnormal splicing, and the contribution of hypoxia to these changes during metastasis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects and possible mechanisms of negative air ions(NAIs) on blood pressure, oxidative stress, and inflammatory status in spontaneous hypertension rats(SHR). METHODS: A total of 60 SHR(half male and half female) were randomly divided into one-month and three-month groups, 30 rats per groups, based on the duration of the intervention. Each group was further randomized into three groups based on the daily intervention time: SHR control group, 2 h NAIs-SHR group, and 6 h NAIs-SHR group, 10 rats per groups. In addition, 20 Wistar Kyoto(WKY)(half male and half female), were randomized into one-month WKY group and three-month WKY group, 10 rats per groups, based on the intervention time. The 2 h NAIs-SHR group and 6 h NAIs-SHR group were exposed to an environment with NAIs concentrations of 4.5×10~4-5×10~4 cm~3 per day for 2 h and 6 h. The WKY group and SHR group were exposed to normal air on a daily basis. Blood pressure of rats in each group was measured every three days, while weight was measured once a week. After sacrificing the rats in the first month and the third month of rearing, wet weight of the organs was weighed. The enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to detect 8-hydroxylated deoxyguanosine(8-OHdG), interleukin-6(IL-6), interleukin-8(IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), nitric oxide(NO) and endothelin-1(ET-1) levels. Reactive oxygen species(ROS) detection kit was used to detect ROS level. Malondialdehyde(MDA) and superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione(GSH) and glutathione disulfide(GSSG) were measured by colorimetric analysis. HE staining was conducted to observe the histopathological morphological changes of the thoracic aorta in each group, and Western blot was conducted to detect the thoracic aortap38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(p38 MAPK), extracellular signal-regulated kinases(ERK), c-Jun n-terminal kinase(JNK), c-fos proteins, c-jun proteins and their phosphorylated proteins level. RESULTS: The weight of WKY male mice in the same week age group was higher than that of SHR control group, and there was no significant difference in the weight between the other groups. The coefficient of heart in SHR control group(4.66±0.48) was higher than that in WKY group(3.73±0.15)(P<0.05), while there were no significant differences in the coefficients of brain, kidney, liver and spleen among the groups. Blood pressure in WKY group at the same age was lower than that in SHR group, and blood pressure in SHR control group at 2-5 and 8-11 weeks was higher than that in 2 h NAIs-SHR and 6 h NAIs-SHR groups(P<0.05). HE staining showed that the internal, middle and external membranes of thoracic aorta in 2 h NAIs-SHR group and 6 h NAIs-SHR group were improved to varying degrees compared with those in SHR control group, including disordered internal membrane structure, thickened middle membrane and broken external membrane. In terms of oxidative stress levels, compared with the SHR control group, the ROS(0.66%±0.17%, 0.49%±0.32%) and 8-OHdG((48.29±8.00) ng/mL, (33.13±14.67)ng/mL) levels were lower in the 6 h NAIs-SHR group(P<0.05), while the GSH/GSSG ratio was higher in the one-month 6 h NAIs-SHR group(10.08±4.93). Compared with the 2 h NAIs-SHR group, the ROS level(0.99%±0.19%) was lower in the 6 h NAIs-SHR group(P<0.05). In terms of inflammatory factor levels, compared with the SHR control group, the IL-8 levels((160.44±56.54) ng/L, (145.77±38.39) ng/L) were lower in the 6 h NAIs-SHR group(P<0.05), while the ET-1 level((249.55±16.98) ng/L) was higher in the one-month WKY group. There was no significant difference in NO levels among the groups. The relative expression of p-p38 protein in the thoracic aorta of rats in the one-month SHR control group was lower than that in the WKY group(P<0.05). The relative expression of p-p38 and p-c-fos proteins in the thoracic aorta of rats at three-months was higher in the SHR control group than in the 2 h NAIs-SHR and 6 h NAIs-SHR groups(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The intervention of NAIs at a concentration of 4.5×10~4-5×10~4/cm~3 may regulate the partial oxidation and inflammatory state of SHR rats through the ROS/MAPK/AP1 signaling pathway, thereby reducing their blood pressure level.

OBJECTIVES: Prognostic impact of lung ultrasound-derived B-lines (LUS-BL) in heart failure with mildly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFmrEF) patients remains elusive. We evaluated the correlation between LUS-BL and prognosis in HFmrEF patients. METHODS: This is a subgroup analysis based on our previously published retrospective study with 1691 HFmrEF patients. This subgroup analysis involved 574 patients with LUS-BL results at admission. After discharge, patients underwent clinical follow-up for a minimum of 1 year through telephone, clinical visits or community visits. The primary endpoint was defined as cardiovascular (CV) event, including CV-related mortality or HF hospitalisation at 90 days and 1 year after discharge. RESULTS: CV event at 90 days was significantly increased with higher LUS-BL number (0, 1-2, 3-9 and ≥10: 20%, 14%, 18% and 33%, p=0.008), while CV event rate at 1 year was similar among groups (45% vs 45% vs 42% vs 50%, p=0.573). Older age, hypertension (HR=2.06, 95% CI 1.31 to 3.25), higher right ventricular diameter (>23 mm, HR=2.008, 95% CI 1.37 to 2.94), increased ratio of early transmitral flow velocity to early mitral annular velocity (>24, HR=1.79, 95% CI 1.11 to 2.26) and higher LUS-BL number (>11, HR=1.510, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.26) were identified as independent determinants associated with increased risk of CV event at 90 days after discharge. The Harrell's C-Statistic analysis, based on the Cox regression models, demonstrated a significant improvement in the predictive ability of the model that incorporated both clinical and echocardiographic risk factors along with LUS-BL (areas under the curve (AUC)=0.72) compared with the model comprising only clinical risk factors and LUS-BL (AUC=0.69, p=0.036), or to the model with echocardiographic risk factors and LUS-BL (AUC=0.68, p=0.025). CONCLUSION: In HFmrEF patients with ischaemic heart disease, admission LUS-BL>11 is independently associated with an increased risk of CV event at 90 days following discharge.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to exert significant influence on various physiological processes and diseases, including cancers. The primary objective of this present study was to examine the impact of eight single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in miRNA on the susceptibility to lung cancer (LC) within the Chinese Southern population. METHODS: The genotypes of these eight polymorphisms were determined in 132 LC patients and 214 cancer-free controls. RESULTS: In overall analyses, GG genotype of miRNA-6811 rs2292879 polymorphism was significantly correlated with increased risk of LC (GG vs. AA, adjusted OR = 5.10, 95% CI = 1.02-25.43, P=0.047), yet the genotype frequencies of rs2292879 SNP in controls did not met the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) (P=0.001) in present study. Stratified analyses by smoking revealed that miRNA-423 rs6505162 variants significantly decreased the LC risk in heterozygous (CA vs. CC, adjusted OR = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.03-0.81, P=0.028) and recessive (AA vs. CA + CC, adjusted OR = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.03-0.90, P=0.038) genetic models in smoking population. However, miRNA-196A2 rs11614913, miRNA-196A2 rs12304647, miRNA-146A rs2910164, miRNA-16-1 rs1022960, miRNA-608 rs4919510, and miRNA-27a rs895819 polymorphisms were not significantly associated with LC. CONCLUSION: The findings of our study indicate a potential decrease in LC risk among smokers with the miRNA-423 rs6505162 variants, while an increase in risk is associated with miRNA-6811 rs2292879 polymorphisms in the population of Southern Chinese. However, further well-designed research is necessary to fully understand the precise impact of these two SNPs on the development of LC.

BACKGROUND: Worsening of heart failure (HF) symptoms is the leading cause of medical contact and hospitalization of patients with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF). The prognostic value of signs and symptoms for patients with HFmrEF is currently unclear. This study investigated the prognostic impact of signs and symptoms in HFmrEF patients. METHODS: A Cox proportional risk regression model analyzed the relationship between the number of signs/symptoms and outcomes in 1691 hospitalized HFmrEF patients. Ten significant signs and symptoms were included. Patients were divided into three groups (A: ≤2, B: 3-5, C: ≥6 signs/symptoms). Stratified analysis on male and female patients was performed. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality, and the secondary outcome was a composite of cardiovascular death and heart failure readmission (CV events) post-discharge. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 33 months, all-cause mortality occurred in 457 patients and CV events occurred in 977 patients. Incidence of all-cause mortality was 20.7%, 32.3%* and 49.4%*† in group A, B and C of male patients, (*P < 0.05 vs. A, †P < 0.05 vs. B) and 18.8%, 33.6% and 55.8%* in group A, B and C of female patients. Incidence of CV events was 64.8%, 70.1%* and 87.5%* in group A, B and C of male patients, 61.9%, 75.3%, and 86.1%* in group A, B and C of female patients. Multivariate Cox regression showed older age, renal insufficiency, higher number of signs and symptoms (≥ 3, hazard ratio [HR] 1.317, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.070-1.621, P = 0.009; ≥6, HR 1.982, 95% CI 1.402-2.801, P < 0.001), myocardial infarction, stroke, faster heart rate on admission, and diabetes were independently associated with all-cause mortality(all P < 0.05). Similarly, higher number of signs and symptoms (≥ 3, HR 1.271, 95% CI 1.119-1.443, P < 0.001; ≥6, HR 1.955, 95% CI 1.524-2.508, P < 0.001), older age, renal insufficiency, atrial fibrillation, and diabetes were independently associated with cardiovascular events (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Higher number of symptoms and signs is associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality and CV events in HFmrEF patients. Our results highlight the prognostic importance of careful inquiry on HF symptoms and related physical examination in HFmrEF patients.

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) often co-exist and are closely intertwined. The impact of AF on the outcome of patients with heart failure with mildly-reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) is not fully clear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of AF on the outcomes of hospitalized HFmrEF patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study included 1691 consecutive patients with HFmrEF (mean 68.2 years, 64.8% male) including 296 AF patients. Patients completed 1 year and mean of 33 month clinical follow-up after discharge by telephone interview, clinical visit, or community visit. The primary endpoint was cerebro-cardiovascular events (CCE, composite of HF rehospitalization, stroke, or cardiovascular death). After propensity score matching, 296 patients were included into the AF group (mean 71.5 years) and 592 patients into the non-AF group (mean 70.6 years). After propensity score matching, CCE at 1 year (59.1% vs. 48.5%, P = 0.003) and at a mean of 33 month (77.0% vs. 70.6%, P = 0.043). AF was independently associated with increased CCE within 1 year (HR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.61, P = 0.010) and at 33 months (HR = 1.20, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.43, P = 0.050) post-discharge after adjusted for other clinical confounders including discharge heart rate, NT-proBNP, haemoglobin, and uric acid. CONCLUSIONS: AF is independently associated with an increased risk of CCE in HFmrEF patients within 1 year and at a mean of 33 months after discharge.

Environmental pollution seriously affects human health. The concentration of negative air ions (NAIs), which were discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, is one of the factors used to evaluate air quality. Additionally, NAIs have been widely considered markers by scholars due to their unique biological function. The aim of this study was to summarize existing research and propose future research on the generation and temporal and spatial dynamic patterns of NAIs concentrations as well as the relationship between NAIs and human health. We identified 187 studies (published January 2013-January 2023) that met our inclusion criteria. Fourteen English studies evaluated the effects of NAIs on depression, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, reproduction and development, cognition, and sports muscle injury. Only two studies reported the associations of NAIs exposure with metabolic omics. NAIs concentrations vary temporally with solar radiation, air temperature, and relative humidity, while the temporal dynamic patterns of NAIs are affected by season, time, meteorological factors, air quality index, geographical location, forest vegetation, and other factors. Researchers have shown that exposure to NAIs may benefit our health by changing amino acid metabolism, which mainly manifests as increased anti-inflammation and reduced inflammation and antioxidation. Furthermore, exposure to NAIs promotes energy production, affects the expression of c-fos, and regulates 5-HT levels. There has been considerable interest in the potential effects of NAIs on human health and well-being, but the conclusions have been inconsistent and the mechanisms remain unclear. The use of omics to elucidate the biological mechanism of NAIs is relatively new and has some advantages.

Although previous graph-based multi-view clustering (MVC) algorithms have gained significant progress, most of them are still faced with three limitations. First, they often suffer from high computational complexity, which restricts their applications in large-scale scenarios. Second, they usually perform graph learning either at the single-view level or at the view-consensus level, but often neglect the possibility of the joint learning of single-view and consensus graphs. Third, many of them rely on the k -means for discretization of the spectral embeddings, which lack the ability to directly learn the graph with discrete cluster structure. In light of this, this article presents an efficient MVC approach via unified and discrete bipartite graph learning (UDBGL). Specifically, the anchor-based subspace learning is incorporated to learn the view-specific bipartite graphs from multiple views, upon which the bipartite graph fusion is leveraged to learn a view-consensus bipartite graph with adaptive weight learning. Furthermore, the Laplacian rank constraint is imposed to ensure that the fused bipartite graph has discrete cluster structures (with a specific number of connected components). By simultaneously formulating the view-specific bipartite graph learning, the view-consensus bipartite graph learning, and the discrete cluster structure learning into a unified objective function, an efficient minimization algorithm is then designed to tackle this optimization problem and directly achieve a discrete clustering solution without requiring additional partitioning, which notably has linear time complexity in data size. Experiments on a variety of multi-view datasets demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of our UDBGL approach. The code is available at https://github.com/huangdonghere/UDBGL.

INTRODUCTION: Burkholderia pseudomallei is a gram-negative environmental bacterium and aetiological agent of melioidosis, a tropical infectious disease with diverse clinical presentations. We aimed to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of melioidosis in northern Hainan and to determine the meteorological factors affecting its morbidity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicentre, observational cohort study of 90 patients with melioidosis admitted to four general hospitals in northern Hainan from 2010 to 2020. Epidemiological, clinical presentation, laboratory and treatment outcome data were collected and analysed. The monthly incidence of melioidosis and meteorological data, including precipitation, temperature, humidity, air pressure and wind speed, for the same period were collected to analyse the relationship between meteorological factors and the incidence of melioidosis. RESULTS: Of the 90 patients included in the study, 79 (87.78%) were male. Patient age ranged from 10 to 81 years old, but most patients, namely, 78 (86.67%), were middle-aged and elderly people aged 41-81 years old. Forty-six patients (51.11%) were farmers. The number of cases increased significantly after 2014, with the highest numbers occurring in 2014 and 2016. The highest number of cases occurred in summer and autumn and were associated with abundant rainfall, and 58 cases (64.44%) occurred from July to December. The patients showed diverse presentations and abnormal laboratory parameters: 69 patients (76.67%) had a history of diabetes mellitus; bacteremia was present in 50 patients (55.56%), sepsis was present in 39 patients (43.33%) and pneumonia in 19 patients (21.11%). An average high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level of 149.57 ± 13.65 mg/L and a median procalcitonin (PCT) level of 1.31 (0.39, 6.21) ng/mL were observed. Among all the cases, 21 (23.33%) were identified as acute infections, 51 (56.67%) as subacute infections and 18 (20.00%) as chronic infections. Six patients (6.67%) died of illness; five of these patients were male, and five of these patients were middle-aged and elderly patients. The monthly average precipitation was significantly positively correlated with the monthly average incidence of melioidosis (r = 0.74, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Male patients, farmers and especially middle-aged and elderly individuals with a history of diabetes mellitus accounted for most of the patients. The majority of cases were concentrated in coastal areas. Most cases of melioidosis occurred during the rainy seasons, and the monthly average precipitation was an independent factor affecting the average monthly incidence of melioidosis.

New biocontrol strategies are urgently needed to combat vector-borne infectious diseases. This study presents a low-cost method to produce a potential mosquito insecticide that utilizes the microalgae released into suburban water sources to control mosquito populations. Chlorella microalgae are ubiquitous in local waters, which were chosen as the host for genetic transfection. This species facilitated the recombinant algae to adapt to the prevailing environmental conditions with rapid growth and high relative abundance. The procedure involved microalgae RNAi-based insecticides developed using short hairpin RNAs targeting the Aedes aegypti chitin synthase A (chsa) gene in Chlorella. These insecticides effectively silenced the chsa gene, inhibiting Aedes metamorphosis in the laboratory and simulated-field trials. This study explored the impact of recombinant microalgae on the phytoplankton and zooplankton in suburban waters. High-throughput sequencing revealed that rapid reproduction of recombinant Chlorella indirectly caused the disappearance of some phytoplankton and reduced the protozoan species. This study demonstrated that a recombinant microalgae-based insecticide could effectively reduce the population of Aedes mosquitoes in the laboratory and simulated field trials. However, the impact of this technology on the environment and ecology requires further investigation.

BACKGROUND: More than half of the world's population suffers from epidemic diseases that are spread by mosquitoes. The primary strategy used to stop the spread of mosquito-borne diseases is vector control. Interference RNA (RNAi) is a powerful tool for controlling insect populations and may be less susceptible to insect resistance than other strategies. However, public concerns have been raised because of the transfer of antibiotic resistance marker genes to environmental microorganisms after integration into the recipient genome, thus allowing the pathogen to acquire resistance. Therefore, in the present study, we modified the 3-hydroxykynurenine transaminase (3hkt) and hormone receptor 3 (hr3) RNAi vectors to remove antibiotic resistance marker genes and retain the expression cassette of the inverse repeat sequence of the 3hkt/hr3 target gene. This recombinant microalgal marker-free RNAi insecticide was subsequently added to the suburban water in a simulated-field trial to test its ability to control mosquito population. METHODS: The expression cassette of the 3hkt/hr3 inverted repeat sequence and a DNA fragment of the argininosuccinate lyase gene without the ampicillin resistance gene were obtained using restriction enzyme digestion and recovery. After the cotransformation of Chlamydomonas, the recombinant algae was then employed to feed Aedes albopictus larvae. Ten and 300 larvae were used in small- and large-scale laboratory Ae.albopictus feeding trials, respectively. Simulated field trials were conducted using Meishe River water that was complemented with recombinant Chlamydomonas. Moreover, the impact of recombinant microalgae on phytoplankton and zooplankton in the released water was explored via high-throughput sequencing. RESULTS: The marker-free RNAi-recombinant Chlamydomonas effectively silenced the 3hkt/hr3 target gene, resulting in the inhibition of Ae. albopictus development and also in the high rate of Ae. albopictus larvae mortality in the laboratory and simulated field trials. In addition, the results confirmed that the effect of recombinant Chlamydomonas on plankton in the released water was similar to that of the nontransgenic Chlamydomonas, which could reduce the abundance and species of plankton. CONCLUSIONS: The marker-free RNAi-recombinant Chlamydomonas are highly lethal to the Ae. albopictus mosquito, and their effect on plankton in released water is similar to that of the nontransgenic algal strains, which reduces the abundance and species of plankton. Thus, marker-free recombinant Chlamydomonas can be used for mosquito biorational control and mosquito-borne disease prevention.

AIMS: To explore the ATF2 expression of preeclampsia patients and investigate whether the level of ATF2 expression impacted the low-dose aspirin treatment of preeclampsia patients. BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a severe pregnancy-related hypertension disorder and refers to hypertension. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore the activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2) expression of preeclampsia patients and investigate whether the level of ATF2 expression impacted the low-dose aspirin treatment of preeclampsia patients. METHODS: Firstly, we collected the plasma of normal and preeclampsia pregnancies and quantified the expressions of ATF2 by ELISA. Then we quantified the expression of the three downstream target genes of ATF2 (IL-8, IL-6 and MMP-2). Finally, we collected and quantified the interventional and observational group plasma. All data were compared by t-test (p<0.05). RESULTS: ATF2 and its target genes (IL-6, IL-8 and MMP-2) were upregulated in preeclampsia patients. In addition, ATF2 and its target genes were downregulated in the interventional group (LDA-treated group). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that LDA could inhibit ATF2 expression in preeclampsia. It suggests that ATF2 may be a potential target of LDA in the prevention of preeclampsia.

As an important environmental protection measure, the Poplar Ecological Retreat (PER) project aims to restore the ecology of the Dongting Lake (DL, China's second largest freshwater lake) wetland. And its ecological impact is yet to be revealed. This study selected soil bacterial community structure (BCS) as an indicator of ecological restoration to explore the ecological impact of PER project on DL wetland. Soil samples were collected from reed area (RA, where poplar had never been planted, as the end point of ecological restoration for comparison in this study), poplar planting area (PA), poplar retreat for 1-year area (PR1A) and poplar retreat for 2 years area (PR2A), then their soil properties and BCS were measured. The results showed that the PER project caused significant changes in soil properties, such as the soil organic matter (SOM) and moisture, and an increase in the diversity and richness index of soil BCS. The Shannon-wiener index of RA, PA, PR1A and PR2A were 3.3, 2.63, 2.75 and 2.87, respectively. The number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) changed similarly to the Shannon-wiener index. The Pearson correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the poplar retreat time, SOM and moisture content were the main factors leading to the increase of BCS diversity. All of these indicated that after the implementation of the PER project, the ecology of the lake area showed a trend of gradual recovery.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is more and more widely used in cancer, which is of great help to doctors in diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to summarize the current research hotspots in the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Cancer (AAIC) and to assess the research trends in AAIC. Methods: Scientific publications for AAIC-related research from 1 January 1998 to 1 July 2022 were obtained from the Web of Science database. The metrics analyses using bibliometrics software included publication, keyword, author, journal, institution, and country. In addition, the blustering analysis on the binary matrix was performed on hot keywords. Results: The total number of papers in this study is 1592. The last decade of AAIC research has been divided into a slow development phase (2013-2018) and a rapid development phase (2019-2022). An international collaboration centered in the USA is dedicated to the development and application of AAIC. Li J is the most prolific writer in AAIC. Through clustering analysis and high-frequency keyword research, it has been shown that AI plays a significantly important role in the prediction, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of cancer. Classification, diagnosis, carcinogenesis, risk, and validation are developing topics. Eight hotspot fields of AAIC were also identified. Conclusion: AAIC can benefit cancer patients in diagnosing cancer, assessing the effectiveness of treatment, making a decision, predicting prognosis and saving costs. Future AAIC research may be dedicated to optimizing AI calculation tools, improving accuracy, and promoting AI.

PURPOSE: To investigate the short-term and long-term effects of all-ceramic onlay on restoration of premolars and its influence on dental function. METHODS: Ninety-five premolars receiving root canal treatment in People's Hospital of Peking University from January 2017 to January 2018 were enrolled, and randomly divided into two groups based on different repairing methods. Patients in the control group (n=47) received full crown restoration, while patients in the experimental group(n=48) received all-ceramic onlay restoration. The success, survival and failure rates of the teeth were compared. The United States Public Health Service(USPHS) and occlusal function of the prosthesis were compared 6, 12 and 36 months after treatment. The data were processed using SPSS 19.0 software package. RESULTS: The success and survival rate of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group, but without significant difference (P>0.05). The morphology, marginal integrity, marginal coloration, surface texture, secondary caries, gingival health and proximal contacts showed no significant difference between the two groups 12 months after treatment(P>0.05). Thirty-six months after treatment, the marginal integrity, marginal coloration and surface texture showed no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05), while the morphology, secondary caries, gingival health and proximal contacts were significantly better in the experimental group than in the control group (P<0.05). The occlusal function between the affected side and contralateral side of both groups showed no significant difference 6, 12 and 36 months after treatment(P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: All-ceramic onlay restoration of premolars has high success and survival rate, and good short-term and long-term restoration effect, which is beneficial to improve the occlusal function of the affected teeth.

Background: High body mass index increases the risk of heart failure morbidity and mortality. It is unclear whether a high body mass index is associated with prognosis in patients with heart failure with mildly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFmrEF). We retrospectively analyzed the effect of a high body mass index on the prognosis of patients with HFmrEF. Methods: We investigated the association between body mass index and cardiovascular death (death from any cardiovascular mechanism) in 1,691 HFmrEF patients (mean age, 68 years; 35% female) in Xiangtan Central Hospital. Using Cox proportional hazards models, body mass index was assessed as a continuous and a categorical variable. Results: Cardiovascular death occurred in 133 patients (82 males and 51 females) after 1 year of follow-up. After adjustment for established risk factors, there was a 7.5% increase in the risk of cardiovascular death for females for each increment of 1 in BMI. In contrast, changes in male body mass index were not significantly associated with cardiovascular death (P = 0.097). Obese subjects had a 1.8-fold increased risk of cardiovascular death compared with subjects with a normal body mass index. The hazard ratio for females was 2.163 (95% confidence interval: 1.150-4.066). Obesity was not significantly associated with cardiovascular death in males (P = 0.085). Conclusion: An increased body mass index is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death in patients with HFmrEF; however, this risk was mainly associated with female patients with HFmrEF and less with male patients with HFmrEF.

Depression increases the risk of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia, where impaired emotion regulation is a core symptom of depression. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the decreased emotion regulation in individuals with MCI combined with depressive symptoms are not precise. We assessed the behavioral performance by emotion regulation tasks and recorded event-related electroencephalography (EEG) signals related to emotion regulation tasks simultaneously. EEG analysis, including event-related potential (ERP), event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP), functional connectivity and graph theory, was used to compare the difference between MCI individuals and MCI depressed individuals in behavioral performance, the late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes, neural oscillations and brain networks during the processing of emotional stimuli. We found that MCI depressed individuals have negative preferences and are prone to allocate more attentional resources to negative stimuli. Results suggested that theta and alpha oscillations activity is increased, and gamma oscillations activity is decreased during negative stimulus processing in MCI depressed individuals, thus indicating that the decreased emotion regulation in MCI depressed individuals may be associated with enhanced low-frequency and decreased high-frequency oscillations activity. Functional connectivity analysis revealed a decrease in functional connectivity in the left cerebral hemisphere of the alpha band and an increase in functional connectivity in the right cerebral hemisphere of the alpha band in MCI depressed individuals. Graph theory analysis suggested that global network metrics, including clustering coefficients and disassortative, decreased, while nodal and modular network metrics regarding local nodal efficiency, degree centrality, and betweenness centrality were significantly increased in the frontal lobe and decreased in the parieto-occipital lobe, which was observed in the alpha band, further suggesting that abnormal alpha band network connectivity may be a potential marker of depressive symptoms. Correlational analyses showed that depressive symptoms were closely related to emotion regulation, power oscillations and functional connectivity. In conclusion, the dominant processing of negative stimuli, the increased low-frequency oscillations activity and decreased high-frequency activity, so as the decrease in top-down information processing in the frontal parieto-occipital lobe, results in the abnormality of alpha-band network connectivity. It is suggested that these factors, in turn, contribute to the declined ability of MCI depressed individuals in emotion regulation.

A simple and efficient approach for the high-purity CaSO4·2H2O (DH) whiskers and α-CaSO4·0.5H2O (α-HH) whiskers derived from such phosphogypsum (PG) was proposed. The impact of different experimental parameters on supersaturated dissolution-recrystallization and preparation processes of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O was elaborated. At 3.5 mol/L HCl concentration, the dissolution temperature and time were 90 °C and 20 min, respectively. After eight cycles and 5-8 times cycles, total crystallization amount of CaSO4·2H2O was 21.75 and 9.97 g/100 mL, respectively, from supersaturated HCl solution. The number of cycles affected the shape and amount of the crystal. Higher HCl concentration facilitated CaSO4·2H2O dissolution and created a much higher supersaturation, which acted as a larger driving force for phase transformation of CaSO4·2H2O to α-CaSO4·0.5H2O. The HCl solution system's optimum experimental conditions for HH whiskers preparation involved acid leaching of CaSO4·2H2O sample, with HCl concentration 6.0 mol/L, reaction temperature 80 °C, and reaction time 30 min-60 min. Under the third cycle conditions, α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers were uniform in size, clear, and distinct in edges and angles. The length range of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers was from 106 µm to 231 µm and diameter range from 0.43 µm to 1.35 µm, while the longest diameter ratio was 231. Purity of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers was approximately 100%, where whiteness reached 98.6%. The reuse of the solution enables the process to discharge no waste liquid. It provides a new reference direction for green production technology of phosphogypsum.

AIMS: Clinical data on the prognostic determinants over varying periods within the same cohort of heart failure with mid-range or mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) remain scarce. This study aimed to identify the short-term, intermediate-term, and long-term risk factors of adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in patients hospitalized for HFmrEF. METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective study included 1691 consecutive HFmrEF patients admitted to our hospital between January 2015 and August 2020. Baseline data including clinical characteristics, laboratory and cardiac imaging examinations were obtained. Patients completed at least 1 year clinical follow-up after discharge by telephone interview, clinical visit, or community visit. The primary endpoint was defined as a composite of CV death or rehospitalization for heart failure (CV events) at 3, 12, and 33 months after the diagnosis of HFmrEF. Mean age of the whole cohort was 69 (61-77) years and 64.8% were male. The median clinical follow-up was 33 (20-50) months. CV events were 17.5%, 28.2%, and 57.8% at 3, 12, and 33 months after discharge, respectively. Independent risk factors for CV events were uric acid >382 µmol/L, creatinine >100 µmol/L, N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) > 3368 pg/mL and haemoglobin <120 g/L for men and <110 g/L for women at 3 and 12 months. Pulmonary artery systolic pressure >35 mmHg and the ratio of early transmitral flow velocity to early mitral annular velocity >18 served as independent risk factors for CV events at 12 months. At 33 months, uric acid > 382 µmol/L, NT-proBNP >3368 pg/mL, and pulmonary artery systolic pressure >35 mmHg were the independent risk factors of CV events. CONCLUSIONS: Higher uric acid, creatinine, NT-proBNP, and lower haemoglobin levels at baseline are valuable serum biomarkers for risk stratification of short-term and long-term CV outcomes of HFmrEF patients. Future studies are needed to verify if intensive heart failure therapy for identified high-risk HFmrEF patients based on these four serum biomarkers could improve their short-term and long-term CV outcomes or not.
