Background: The lack of Physical Activity (PA) and prolonged Recreational Screen Time (RST) among children and adolescents has been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing this issue to escalate into a crucial public health concern. This study aims to investigate the trends in PA and RST among Chinese children and adolescents from 2019 to 2022, thereby analyzing the short-term and long-term effects of the pandemic on PA and RST among Chinese children and adolescents. Methods: A nationally representative sample of Chinese primary, middle, and high school students was surveyed annually between September and December from 2019 to 2022 using a consistent set of questionnaires. Trends in PA and RST across different school levels, genders, areas (urban/rural), and regions (north/south) were analyzed using Segmented Linear Regression. Results: From 2019 to 2022, the PA and RST of children and adolescents displayed an inverted U-shaped trend, initially increasing and subsequently declining. Specifically, from 2019 to 2021, the PA of children and adolescents significantly increased but dramatically declined from 2021 to 2022. This trend in PA is more pronounced among primary, male, urban, and northern children and adolescent. The RST of children and adolescents increased from 2019 to 2020 but significantly decreased from 2020 to 2022. This trend in RST is more pronounced among primary, urban, and southern children and adolescent. Conclusions: This research unveils the effects of the pandemic on PA and RST in children and adolescents, suggesting short-term beneficial and long-term adverse effects on PA and short-term adverse and long-term beneficial effects on RST. These findings provide a foundation for formulating policies related to children and adolescents' PA and RST during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior among children and adolescents is a growing public health concern. This study aims to examine the trends in Physical Activity (PA) and Recreational Screen Time (RST) amongst children and adolescents in China, considering variations in genders, school levels, areas (urban versus rural), and regions (north versus south). The findings provide a foundation to guide policy and strategy making for future health promotion and development. METHODS: An annual national cross-sectional survey was conducted in China from 2017 to 2019 cumulatively involving 52,503 (48% female) children and adolescents from grades 4 to 12 (aged 12.72 ± 2.12). Data on PA and RST were collected through self-administered questionnaires. Weighted least squares regression was used to analyze the trends and differences in PA and RST among the participants' profiles. RESULTS: There was an annual decreased in PA compliance rate of approximately 3.43% (95% CI: 0.79-6.08%) for primary school students, primarily among males residing in rural areas, and in northern regions. Middle school students experienced a yearly decrease of about 5.23% (95% CI: 2.55-7.92%) in PA compliance across all genders, regions, and urban areas. Similarly, the RST compliance rates for primary school students declined by approximately 3.18% (95% CI: 1.57-4.78%) annually for all genders and areas, but only in the northern regions. CONCLUSIONS: This research highlights a downward trend in PA and RST compliance amongst Chinese children and adolescents, with variations based on school level, gender, area, and region. Urgent policies and interventions are imperative to promote PA while mitigating excessive RST within these populations.

BACKGROUND: Leaf morphology is an important component of the idea plant architecture that extensively influences photosynthesis, transpiration, and ultimately grain yield in crops. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms regulating this morphology remain largely unclear. RESULTS: In this study, a mutant showing a narrow and stripe leaf phonotype, designated nsl2, was obtained. Histological analysis revealed defects in the vascular system and reduced epidermal cell number in the nsl2, while the cell size remained unchanged. Map-based cloning and genetic complementation experiments revealed that NSL2, which encodes a small subunit of ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs), is a null allelic with ST1 and SDL. The NSL2 was expressed in variety of tissues, with the highest levels detected in leaves, and its protein was localized in the nucleus and cytoplasm. The dNTPs level was altered in the nsl2 mutant, and thereby affecting the dNTPs pool balance. In addition, flow cytometric analysis and the altered transcript level of genes related to cell cycle indicated that NSL2 affects cell cycle progression. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings here suggest that NSL2 function in the synthesis of dNTP, the deficient of which leads to DNA synthesis block and in turn affects cell cycle progression, and ultimately decreased cell number and narrow leaf in the nsl2 plant.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has highlighted the importance of Physical Activity (PA), Sedentary Time (ST), and Physical Fitness (PF) for health. However, there is limited research on the association between PA, ST, and PF in the context of female college students, particularly in Eastern cultures. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the association between PA, ST, and PF among Eastern female college students to inform policy and practice. METHODS: The study was conducted from February to May 2022 at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China. A total of 512 Chinese female college students participated in this study through snowball sampling. Participants' PA and ST were investigated using the International PA Questionnaire, and PF was measured using the Chinese National Student Physical Fitness Test. Independent samples t-test and binary logistic regression were used to compare the differences in PF between Active Participants (AP) and Inactive Participants (IP), as well as between Low Sedentary Participants (LSP) and High Sedentary Participants (HSP). Multinomial logistic regression was used to compare the differences in PF between Active and Low Sedentary Participants (ALSP), Active and High Sedentary Participants (AHSP), Inactive and Low Sedentary Participants (ILSP), and Inactive and High Sedentary Participants (IHSP). Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 28. The level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS: AP showed significantly higher cardiorespiratory fitness (p < 0.05) and overall fitness (p < 0.01) than IP. Compared to IP, AP was less likely to be classified as unfit in terms of cardiorespiratory fitness [Odds Ratio (OR), 0.57; 95% Confidence Interval (CI), 0.38-0.85; p < 0.05]. Compared to IHSP, ALSP (OR, 0.44; 95% CI 0.25-0.76; p < 0.01) and AHSP (OR, 0.54; 95% CI 0.32-0.93; p < 0.05) were less likely to be classified as unfit in terms of cardiorespiratory fitness. Furthermore, compared to IHSP, AHSP (OR, 1.66; 95% CI 1.02-2.70; p < 0.05) and ILSP (OR, 2.09; 95% CI 1.16-3.77; p < 0.05) were more likely to be classified as unfit in terms of their flexibility. CONCLUSION: There was a positive association between PA, cardiorespiratory fitness, and overall fitness. There was also an association between cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, and the combination of PA and ST. These findings suggest that both PA and ST can influence different PF items. Therefore, we recommend that public health policy and practice for college female students should consider PF items when selecting different PA and ST intervention strategies.

Cynomorium songaricum Rupr. is a valuable food and medicinal plant with functions, such as an increase in sexual function, mainly attributed to its complex secondary metabolites. However, the effect of internal microbes on metabolite production in C. songaricum is still largely unclear. In this study, the relationship between endophytes and differential secondary metabolites in C. songaricum from seven major producing regions of China were explored based on established methods of metabolomics and high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that there were 13 different marker metabolites, seven shared fungal OTUs, and numerous unshared OTUs among C. songaricum distributed at different locations in China and identified significant correlations between metabolites and endophytic fungi. Our study revealed that endophytic fungi may be one possible factor that can affect the plant secondary metabolite composition.

RESUMO

Vitamin D has been widely used as a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of bone disorders. Epidemiological and preclinical studies demonstrated the anticancer action of vitamin D in a variety of cancers including those in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In these studies the inhibitory action of vitamin D on cancer stem cells (CSCs) has been a focus and is also an important subject to revolutionize the therapeutic potential of vitamin D on cancer treatment. Here, we summarize the involvement of CSC markers and factors and also their signaling pathways in the development of cancers in the esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas and also liver. It is also evidenced that vitamin D could inhibit these markers and factors and their related signaling pathways to suppress tumor progression. All these information could provide new strategies in repurposing vitamin D as therapeutic agent to inhibit cancers in the GI tract.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGE) and the inflammatory response of skin and wound in diabetic patients, and to analyze their relationship in vitro. METHODS: Histological staining and immunohistochemical staining was respectively performed on skin and wound tissue specimens collected from 10 patients with Type II diabetes mellitus (diabetes group) and 12 non-diabetic patients with skin injury (control group) to observe the arrangement of collagen and the distribution of inflammatory cells, and to determine the expression levels of AGE and its receptor (RAGE). Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in skin and wound tissue homogenates were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In vitro, human neutrophils were isolated and treated with RPMI-1640 culture medium or that containing AGE-human serum albumin in the concentration of 0.315, 0.625, 1.250 mg/mL, and they were identified as normal control (NC) group, low concentration (L) group, moderate concentration (M) group, and high concentration (H) group. Cell viability in each group was determined by MTT colorimetric assay, and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cell was measured with 2', 7'-dichlorofluorescein-diacetate. Data were processed with t test. RESULTS: Compared with those of skin in control group, collagens of skin tissues in diabetes group atrophied and disorderly arranged. Inflammatory cells in wounds in diabetes group were dispersed, in which collagens arranged loosely and irregularly, as compared with those of wounds in control group. Expression levels of AGE and RAGE of skin in diabetes group were higher than those in control group. In diabetes and control groups, especially in diabetes group, the numbers of RAGE-positive cells in wound tissue were more than those in skin tissue. Large amount of inflammatory cells with positive expression of RAGE were observed in diabetes group. MDA level of skin and wound tissue in diabetes group was respectively (6.3 ± 1.0), (7.1 ± 2.4) nmol per milligram protein, which were obviously higher than those in control group [(2.9 ± 1.0), (3.6 ± 1.4) nmol per milligram protein, with t value respectively 8.017, 4.349, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01]. Cell viability and ROS levels in neutrophils were increased in L, M, and H groups [(59 ± 8)%, (77 ± 5)%, (67 ± 6)% and 1.67 ± 0.14, 2.13 ± 0.17, 3.48 ± 0.48] as compared with those in NC group [(34 ± 5)% and 0.58 ± 0.06, with t value respectively 7.195, 14.890, 11.130 and 20.195, 24.905, 16.864, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01]. CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal oxidative stress in diabetic skin leads to an atypical origin of wound repair. AGE-RAGE effect is a critical mediator for oxidative stress in diabetic wound tissue during wound healing.

In the present study, we evaluate the relative content of chlorophyll and spectral reflectance variations in the visible light under different intensity of UVB (L-UVB, CK and UVB) of three typical evergreen broadleaf plants in China subtropical area. In different simulated UVB condition, the experiment shows that different tree species have different UVB sensitivity, and chlorophyll content varies greatly with species, and the chlorophyll relative content with the filter UVB w as significantly higher than with enhanced UVB. In the spectral reflectance of the visible part, it is generally higher with enhanced UVB's treatment than with L-UVB treatment; and any treatments present adaptation, species under different stress. After roles of the different UVB intensity, for each tree species the visible part of the spectral reflectance shows difference between green and red mainly. The study results show that the subtropical evergreen broad-leaved species has a strong sensitivity to the UVB, and UVB response of different tree species varies greatly.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of aminoguanidine cream on the proliferation of keratinocytes (KC), content of advanced glycosylation end products (AGE) and oxidative stress in skin tissue of rats with diabetes. METHODS: Stearic acid, liquid paraffin, vaseline, lanolin, isopropyl myristate fat, glycerol, 50 g/L alcohol paraben, aminoguanidine hydrochloride etc. were mixed in certain proportion to make aminoguanidine cream, and cream without aminoguanidine was used as matrix. The dorsal skin of normal rats were harvested and treated by aminoguanidine cream with dose of 5, 10 g/L, or 5 g/L together with 10 g/L azone. The transdermal effect was respectively measured at post treatment hour 2, 4, 7, 10, 12, 24. Thirty SD rats were divided into normal control (NC, n = 6), diabetes (D, n = 8), aminoguanidine cream-interfered (AI, n = 8), matrix cream-interfered groups (MI, n = 8) according to the random number table. Diabetes was reproduced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ (65 mg/kg) in rats of D, AI, and MI groups, and rats in NC group were injected with 0.05 mmol/L citrate buffer as control. One week later, dorsal skin of rats in AI and MI groups were respectively treated with 10 g/L aminoguanidine cream and matrix cream by external use for 4 weeks. AGE content was determined with fluorescence detection from skin collagen extract. KC cell cycle was detected by flow cytometry. Skin tissue specimens were obtained for determination of levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and total antioxidant capacity. Data were processed with t test. RESULTS: Transdermal effect of aminoguanidine cream with dose of 10 g/L was better than that with 5 g/L or 5 g/L + 10 g/L azone cream. One rat was not induced successfully in MI group. Four weeks after model reproduction, 4 rats died in D group and 1 rat died in AI group. The AGE content in D group was obviously higher than that in NC group [(36.8 +/- 2.6), (24.6 +/- 2.7) U per milligram hydroxyproline, respectively, t = 7.2, P < 0.01], and that in AI group [(28.6 +/- 3.7) U per milligram hydroxyproline] was also lower as compared with that in D group (t = -3.9, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in AGE content between MI [(32.2 +/- 5.2) U per milligram hydroxyproline] and D groups (t = 1.6, P > 0.05). The percentage of KC in S phase was obviously lower in D group than in NC group [(5.3 +/- 0.6)%, (7.6 +/- 0.9)%, respectively, t = 4.50, P < 0.01], while that in MI group [(9.2 +/- 1.5)%] was higher as compared with that in D group ( t = 4.90, P < 0.01). It was more higher in AI group than in D group on KC percentage in S and G2/M phase (with t value respectively 6.80, 3.17, P values all below 0.01). The oxidative stress indexes of skin tissue in D group were all higher than those in NC group, in which levels of MPO and SOD showed statistical difference (with t value respectively 4.4, 3.7, P values all below 0.05). The oxidative stress indexes were all lower in AI group than in D group, especially in SOD level (t = -1.4, P < 0.05). Levels of MAD, MPO in MI group were significantly lower than those in D group (with t value respectively 2.6, 2.9, P values all below 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Aminoguanidine cream can promote KC proliferation and appropriately reduce oxidative stress through inhibiting AGE formation to a certain extent in skin tissue of rats with diabetes. Signal use of matrix cream can also reduce oxidative stress in skin tissue of rats with diabetes.
