Objective: To investigate whether anodal high-definition transcranial current stimulation (HD-tDCS) over the left dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex (DLPFC) could modulate the heart rate (HR) and heart-rate variability (HRV) in healthy young people. Methods: Forty healthy young people were enrolled in this randomized crossover trial. The participants were randomized to receive anodal HD-tDCS (n = 20) or sham HD-tDCS (n = 20) over the left DLPFC with a washout period of 1 week. Electrocardiogram (ECG) data were continuously recorded 20 min before the stimulation, during the session (20 min), and 20 min after the session. HR and the time- and frequency-domain indices of the HRV were measured to investigate the activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Results: Anodal HD-tDCS over the left DLPFC induced a significant decrease in HR and a significant increase in the average of normal-to-normal intervals (AVG NN), low-frequency (LF) power, total power (TP), and LF/high-frequency (HF) ratio in comparison with the sham stimulation and the baseline. However, sham HD-tDCS over the left DLPFC had no significant effect on HR or HRV. Conclusions: Anodal HD-tDCS over the left DLPFC could reduce HR and modulate the HRV in healthy young people. HD-tDCS may show some potential for acutely modulating cardiovascular function.

Preservation of the mitral valve (MV) size is essential for valve function, and a reduced MV coaptation-zone area increases the risk of developing functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). We aimed to determine if the MV leaflet and coaptation-zone areas were associated with the severity of atherosclerosis assessed by cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) in patients with normal left ventricle (LV) systolic function and size by real-time 3D echocardiography (RT3DE).We performed RT3DE analysis in 66 patients with normal LV size and ejection fraction who underwent 2D echocardiography and CAVI. MV coaptation-zone areas were measured by custom 3D software and indexed by body surface area (BSA). The associations of clinical factors and mean CAVI with MV leaflet and coaptation-zone areas were evaluated by univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses.On univariable analysis, MV leaflet area/BSA was significantly associated with age (r = -0.335, P = 0.0069) and mean CAVI (r = -0.464, P < 0.001), and MV coaptation-zone area was significantly associated with age (r = -0.626, P < 0.001), hypertension (r = -0.626, P < 0.001), dyslipidemia (r = -0.626, P < 0.001), E/e' (r = -0.626, P < 0.001), and CAVI (r = -0.740, P < 0.001). On multivariable analysis, mean CAVI was independently associated only with MV leaflet area/BSA (standardized coefficient = -0.611, P < 0.001) and MV coaptation-zone area/BSA (standardized coefficient = -0.74, P < 0.001).In patients with normal LV systolic function and size, MV leaflet and coaptation-zone areas might be reduced according to advancing atherosclerosis. Patients with atherosclerosis might be at increased risk of developing FMR.

Enlargement of the mitral valve (MV) has gained attention as a compensatory mechanism for functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). We aimed to determine if MV leaflet area is associated with MV coaptation-zone area and identify the clinical factors associated with MV leaflet size and coaptation-zone area in patients with normal left ventricle (LV) systolic function and size using real-time 3D echocardiography (RT3DE).We performed RT3DE in 135 patients with normal LV size and ejection fraction. MV leaflet and coaptation-zone areas were measured using custom 3D software. The clinical factors associated with MV leaflet and coaptation-zone areas were evaluated using univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses.There was a significant relationship between MV leaflet and coaptation-zone areas (r = 0.499, P < 0.001). MV leaflet area was strongly associated with body surface area (BSA) (r = 0.905, P < 0.001) rather than LV size and age. MV leaflet area/BSA was independently associated with male gender (P = 0.002), lower diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.042), and LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) index (P = 0.048); MV coaptation-zone area/BSA was independently associated with lower LVEDV index (P = 0.01).In patients with normal LV systolic function and size, MV leaflet size has a significant impact on competent MV coaptation. MV leaflet area might be intrinsically determined by body size rather than age and LV size, and the MV leaflet area/BSA is relatively constant. On the other hand, some clinical factors might also influence MV leaflet and coaptation-zone area.

BACKGROUND: Recent progress in chemotherapy has prolonged the survival of patients with hematological diseases, but has also increased the number of patients with chemotherapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD). However, the causes of individual variations and risk factors for CTRCD have yet to be fully elucidated.Methods and Results:Consecutive echocardiograms of 371 patients were retrospectively evaluated for the presence of left ventricular (LV) non-compaction (LVNC). Individual LV ejection fraction (LVEF) outcome estimates were made using bivariate linear regression with log-transformed duration Akaike information criterion (AIC) model fitting. The prevalence of LVNC was 6-fold higher in patients with hematological diseases than in those with non-hematological diseases (12% vs. 2%; risk ratio 6.1; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.0, 18.2). Among patients with hematological diseases, the ratio of myeloid diseases was significantly higher in the group with LVNC (P=0.031). Deterioration of LVEF was more severe in patients with than without LVNC (-14.4 percentage points/year [95% CI -21.0, -7.9] vs. -4.6 percentage points/year [95% CI -6.8, -2.4], respectively), even after multivariate adjustment for baseline LVEF, background disease distributions, cumulative anthracycline dose, and other baseline factors. CONCLUSIONS: LVNC is relatively prevalent in patients with hematological diseases (particularly myeloid diseases) and can be one of the major risk factors for CTRCD. Detailed cardiac evaluations including LVNC are recommended for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined as a mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) ≥ 25 mmHg at rest as assessed by right heart catheterization (RHC), and Doppler-derived systolic PAP (sPAPECHO) or tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient (TRPG) is widely used to screen for PH. However, the cutoff value of sPAPECHO or TRPG for detecting a mean PAP ≥ 25 mmHg that was determined invasively has not been well defined.We studied 189 patients who underwent RHC. Echocardiography was performed within 24 hours of invasive evaluation, and sPAPECHO was defined as the TRPG with right atrial pressure estimated on the basis of the current guideline.From the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the optimal sPAPECHO, and TRPG cutoffs for detecting PH were 41 mmHg (sensitivity, 92%; specificity, 91%; area under the curve = 0.95) and 36 mmHg (sensitivity, 90%; specificity, 93%; area under the curve = 0.95), respectively. The area under the TRPG ROC curve was similar to the area under the sPAPECHO ROC curve.Given that Doppler echocardiography is required to accurately detect PH rather than to accurately estimate systolic PAP, our results provide useful information with regard to screening patients for PH and recommending further investigations on PH.

We evaluated the association between visceral adiposity and left ventricular (LV) diastolic function in association with plasma adiponectin levels in 213 subjects without overt cardiac diseases. Abdominal visceral fat area was quantified by computed tomography. Excessive visceral fat was significantly associated with impaired diastolic parameters including E/A, E' and E/E'. Although serum adiponectin levels decreased with increased visceral adiposity, there was no independent association between serum adiponectin levels and diastolic parameters, which suggest that the role of adiponectin in this association might be indirect.

Pyrolyzed base-metal-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with FeNx coordination are emerging as nonprecious metal catalysts for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, surprisingly, nonpyrolyzed MOFs involving Fe-N coordination have not been explored for the ORR. This study concerns the catalytic performance of a semiconducting nonpyrolyzed iron triazolate framework (FeTa2 ) for ORR in alkaline electrolyte. The FeTa2 catalyst is studied as composites with different amounts of conductive Ketjenblack carbon (KB). The performance of these FeTa2 -x KB (x denotes the KB/FeTa2 weight ratio) composites by onset and half-wave potentials of ORR appears to be superior to most previously documented nonpyrolyzed MOFs. Characterization by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry suggest that N-FeIII -OH- sites at the surface of FeTa2 function as the catalytic active sites. This FeTa2 also shows very stable activity during ORR, as supported by accelerated durability test of the FeTa2 -x KB sample (20 000 cycles, ca. 90 h). The framework structure of FeTa2 remains intact during the durability test, which would help to explain its excellent catalytic durability. This would be the first study demonstrating efficient and stable ORR catalysis by a nonpyrolyzed Fe-N coordination-based MOF material.

The prognostic value of the right ventricular (RV) systolic to diastolic duration ratio (S/D ratio) in patients with advanced heart failure is not clear.We enrolled 45 patients with DCM (40 ± 13 years, 33 male) who were admitted to our hospital for evaluation or treatment of heart failure. The RV systolic and diastolic durations were measured using continuous Doppler imaging of tricuspid regurgitation, and the RV S/D ratio was calculated. Cardiac events were defined as cardiac death or left ventricular assist device implantation within the first year. Twenty-eight cardiac events occurred. The RV S/D ratio was significantly higher in the event group than in the event-free group (1.8 ± 0.8 versus 1.2 ± 0.5, P = 0.008). Univariate analysis showed that the RV S/D ratio, plasma brain natriuretic peptide concentration, left atrial volume index, and mitral deceleration time were associated with these events. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the optimal RV S/D cutoff value to predict events was 1.2 (sensitivity 79%, specificity 65%, area under the curve 0.745). Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated a significantly higher event rate in patients with an RV S/D ratio > 1.2 (log-rank test, P = 0.003). The addition of an RV S/D ratio > 1.2 improved the prognostic utility of a model that included conventional variables (P = 0.014).In patients with advanced heart failure with DCM, the RV S/D ratio was higher in patients with events than in those without events. The addition of the RV S/D ratio to conventional parameters may provide better prognostic information.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound measurements of the inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter (IVCD), together with its respiratory variation, provide a noninvasive estimate of right atrial pressure (RAP). However, there is a paucity of studies that have compared this technique with simultaneous catheterization. We explored the best cut-off values of IVC parameters for elevated RAP in comparison with RAP measured by catheterization.Methods and Results:We prospectively enrolled 120 East Asian patients who were scheduled for catheterization. The IVCD and IVC collapsibility index (IVCCI) were measured according to the current guidelines. The optimal maximum IVCD (IVCDmax) and IVCCI cut-offs for detecting elevated RAP (RAP ≥10 mmHg) were 17 mm and 40%, respectively. When we combined both in proportion to the guidelines, the sensitivity and specificity for detecting elevated RAP were 75% and 94%, respectively. When the cut-off values from the current guidelines (>21 mm and <50%) were applied, the respective sensitivity and specificity were 42% and 99%. Interestingly, the cut-off value of the optimal IVCDmax indexed by body surface area (11 mm/m2) was similar to previous Western population data. When we combined both cut-off values (11 mm/m2and 40%), the sensitivity and specificity were 75% and 95%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The optimal absolute IVCDmax and IVCCI cut-offs to detect elevated RAP were smaller than those in the current guidelines. Indexed IVCDmax may be an IVC parameter that can be used internationally.

RESUMO

A protocol to quantify the distribution of surface atoms of concave nanocatalysts according to their coordination number is proposed. The 3D surface of an Au@Pd concave nanocube is reconstructed and segmented. The crystallographic coordinates and low-coordinate surface atom densities of the concave facets are determined. The result shows that 32% of the surface atoms are low-coordinated, which may contribute to the high activity.

Iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon (Fe-N-C) materials are among the most active non-precious metal catalysts that could replace Pt-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. The synthesis of the Fe-N-C catalysts often involves the use of aniline as the precursor for both N and C and ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS) as an indispensable oxidative initiator for aniline polymerization. Herein, a detailed structure and catalytic ORR performance comparison of aniline-derived Fe-N-C catalysts synthesized with and without the use of APS is reported. The APS-free preparation, which uses Fe(III) ions as the Fe source as well as the aniline polymerization initiator, results in a simple Fe-N-C catalyst with a high activity for the ORR. We show that APS is not necessary for the preparation and even detrimental to the performance of the catalyst.

Even in healthy subjects, the heart ages along with other organs of the body. A prominent change is progressive left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, even though LV mass increases slightly during aging. Accordingly, assessment of LV dysfunction can be employed as a surrogate marker of cardiac age. The clinical factors that may accelerate the cardiac aging process include visceral obesity, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. At the molecular level in cardiac myocytes, reactive oxygen species, transforming growth factor-ß, mitochondrial function, and lysosomal function are also related to cardiac age. Furthermore, age-related LV dysfunction has been shown to be one of the main risk factors for future heart failure. Consequently, assessment of LV diastolic function is necessary for both preventing cardiac events and assessing cardiac age. Echocardiography provides a noninvasive assessment of cardiac structure and function. This review describes how to assess cardiac aging using echocardiography, and how to interpret the clinical relevance of the findings.

The direct redox reaction (galvanic displacement) between Pd(2+) and substrate Si was used to deposit Pd on Si, and the Pd-Si catalysts enabled a chemoselective hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene with the selectivity for para-chloroaniline higher than 99.9% at complete conversion of para-chloronitrobenzene.

Gas-phase dehydration of lactic acid (LA) to acrylic acid (AA) was investigated over alkali-exchanged ß zeolite (M(x)Na(1-x)ß, M=Li(+), K(+), Rb(+), or Cs(+)) of different exchange degrees (x). The reaction was conducted under varying conditions to understand the catalyst selectivity for AA production and trends of byproduct formation. The nature and exchange degree of M(+) were found to be critical for the acid-base properties and catalytic performance of the exchanged zeolite. K(x)Na(1-x)ß of x=0.94 appeared to be the best performing catalyst whereas Li(x)Na(1-x)ß and Naß were the poorest in terms of AA selectivity and yield. The AA yield as high as 61 mol % (selectivity: 64 mol %) could be obtained under optimized reaction conditions for up to 8 h over the best performing K0.94Na0.06ß. The acid and base properties of the catalysts were probed, respectively by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of adsorbed NH3 and CO2, and were related to the electrostatic potentials of the alkali ions in the zeolite, which provided a basis for the discussion of the acid-base catalysis for sustainable AA formation from LA.

Copper and its salts are abundant, inexpensive, and eco-friendly and have been used as the surrogates of noble metals to effect arene C-H bond activation and transformations. Despite of the recent significant progress of the study, syntheses of high-valent arylcopper(II-III) compounds are still very rare and mechanisms of copper(II)-catalyzed reactions remain elusive. With the use of azacalix[1]arene[3]pyridines as a platform, a number of arylcopper(II) compounds were synthesized efficiently from the reaction of Cu(ClO4)2 under ambient conditions. The resulting aryl-Cu(II) compounds, which contain an unprecedented (substituted) phenyl-Cu(II) σ-bond, were stable under atmospheric conditions and can undergo facile oxidation reaction by free copper(II) ions or oxone to afford arylcopper(III) compounds in good yields. Both arylcopper(II) and arylcopper(III) compounds were characterized unambiguously by means of XRD, XPS, and NMR methods. Experimental evidence including reaction kinetics, LFER and KIE, and theoretical calculations indicated that the Cu(ClO4)2-mediated arene C-H bond activation proceeds plausibly through an electrophilic aromatic metalation pathway. The synthesis of high-valent arylcopper compounds and the reaction mechanism reported here highlight the diversity and richness of organocopper chemistry.

Nearly monodisperse Au nanorods (NRs) with different aspect ratios were separated from home-synthesized polydisperse samples using a gradient centrifugation method. The morphology, size and its distribution, and photo-absorption property were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. Subsequently, using colloidal Au NRs (36.2 nm ×10.7 nm) with 97.4% yield after centrifugation and Au nanospheres (NSs) (22.9 ± 1.0 nm in diameter) with 97.6% yield as Au substrates, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were recorded using laser excitation at 632.8 nm. Results show that surface enhancement factors (EF) for Au NRs and NSs are 6.2 × 10(5) and 5.7 × 10(4) using 1.0 × 10(-6) M 2,4-D, respectively, illustrating that EF value is a factor of ~10 greater for Au NRs substrates than for Au NSs substrates. As a result, large EF are a mainly result of chemical enhancement mechanisms. Thus, it is expected that Au NPs can find a comprehensive SERS application in the trace detection of pesticide residues.

Platinum is a widely used precious metal in many catalytic nanostructures. Engineering the surface electronic structure of Pt-containing bi- or multimetallic nanostructure to enhance both the intrinsic activity and dispersion of Pt has remained a challenge. By constructing Pt-on-Au (Pt^Au) nanostructures using a series of monodisperse Au nanoparticles in the size range of 2-14 nm, we disclose herein a new approach to steadily change both properties of Pt in electrocatalysis with downsizing of the Au nanoparticles. A combined tuning of Pt dispersion and its surface electronic structure is shown as a consequence of the changes in the size and valence-band structure of Au, which leads to significantly enhanced Pt mass-activity on the small Au nanoparticles. Fully dispersed Pt entities on the smallest Au nanoparticles (2 nm) exhibit the highest mass-activity to date towards formic acid electrooxidation, being 2 orders of magnitude (75-300 folds) higher than conventional Pt/C catalyst. Fundamental relationships correlating the Pt intrinsic activity in Pt^Au nanostructures with the experimentally determined surface electronic structures (d-band center energies) of the Pt entities and their underlying Au nanoparticles are established.

The effect of zinc promotion on the oxidation state of cobalt in Co/ZrO(2) catalysts was investigated and correlated with the activity and selectivity for ethanol steam reforming (ESR). Catalysts were synthesized by applying incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Higher ethanol conversion and lower CH(4) selectivity are observed for the Co/ZrO(2) catalyst promoted with Zn as compared to the Co/ZrO(2) catalyst alone. Addition of Zn inhibits the oxidation of metallic cobalt (Co(0) ) particles and results in a higher ratio of Co(0) /Co(2+) in the Zn-promoted Co/ZrO(2) catalyst. These results suggest that metallic cobalt (Co(0) ) is more active than Co(2+) in the ethanol conversion through dehydrogenation and that Co(2+) may play a role in the CH(4) formation. TPR measurements, on the other hand, reveal that Zn addition inhibits the reduction of Co(2+) and Co(3+) , which would lead to the false conclusion that oxidized Co is required to reduce the CH(4) formation. Therefore, TPR measurements may not be appropriate to correlate the degree of metal reducibility (in this case Co(0)) with the catalyst activity for reactions, such as ESR, where oxidizing conditions exist.

Pt(m)^Ag nanostructures (m being the atomic Pt/Ag ratio, m = 0.1-0.6) were prepared by reflux citrate reduction of PtCl(6)(2-) ions in aqueous solution containing colloidal Ag (6.3 ± 3.9 nm). A distinct alloying of Pt with Ag was detected due to an involvement of the galvanic replacement reaction between PtCl(6)(2-) and metallic Ag colloids. The nanostructure transformed from a structure with an Ag-core and an alloyed PtAg-shell to a hollow PtAg alloy structure with the increase in m. Compared to a commercial E-TEK Pt/C catalyst, the catalytic performance of Pt in the Pt(m)^Ag/C samples for the cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) strongly correlated with the electronic structure of Pt, as a consequence of varied Pt dispersion and Pt-Ag interaction. With either H(2)SO(4) or KOH as an electrolyte, Pt in the Pt(m)^Ag nanostructures with a relatively high m (≥0.4) showed significantly enhanced intrinsic activity whereas Pt in those catalysts with low m (≤0.2) appeared less active than the Pt/C catalyst. These data are used to discuss the role of electronic structure and geometric effects of Pt toward ORR.

RESUMO

Adding a small amount of fully dispersed Pt entities onto the Au surface in Au/SiO(2) catalyst is found to be an efficient approach to improve the catalytic activity of Au (up to 70-fold) for the hydrogenation of α,ß-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, without alternating its selectivity towards C=O or C=C bond hydrogenation.
