OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Neiguan" (PC6) in impro-ving myocardial electrical remodeling in rats with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by enhancing transient outward potassium current. METHODS: A total of 30 male SD rats were randomly divided into control, model and EA groups, with 10 rats in each group. The AMI model was established by subcutaneous injection with isoprenaline (ISO, 85 mg/kg). EA was applied to left PC6 for 20 min, once daily for 5 days. Electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded after treatment. TTC staining was used to observe myocardial necrosis. HE staining was used to observe the pathological morphology of myocardial tissue and measure the cross-sectional area of myocardium. Potassium ion-related genes in myocardial tissue were detected by RNA sequencing. The mRNA and protein expressions of Kchip2 and Kv4.2 in myocardial tissue were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR and Western blot, respectively. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area in the model group was significantly increased (P<0.01), the ST segment was significantly elevated (P<0.01), and QT, QTc, QTd and QTcd were all significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01). After EA treatment, cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area was significantly decreased (P<0.01), the ST segment was significantly reduced (P<0.01), and the QT, QTc, QTcd and QTd were significantly decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05). RNA sequencing results showed that a total of 20 potassium ion-related genes co-expressed by the 3 groups were identified. Among them, Kchip2 expression was up-regulated most notablely in the EA group. Compared with the control group, the mRNA and protein expressions of Kchip2 and Kv4.2 in the myocardial tissue of the model group were significantly decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05), while those were increased in the EA group (P<0.01, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: EA may improve myocardial electrical remodeling in rats with myocardial infarction, which may be related to its functions in up-regulating the expressions of Kchip2 and Kv4.2.

OBJECTIVE: The study explores the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at the governing vessel (GV) on proteomic changes in the hippocampus of rats with cognitive impairment. METHODS: Healthy male rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: sham, model and EA. Cognitive impairment was induced by left middle cerebral artery occlusion in the model and EA groups. Rats in the EA group were treated with EA at Shenting (GV24) and Baihui (GV20) for 7 d. Neurological deficit was scored using the Longa scale, the learning and memory ability was detected using the Morris water maze (MWM) test, and the proteomic profiling in the hippocampus was analyzed using protein-labeling technology based on the isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ). The Western blot (WB) analysis was used to detect the proteins and validate the results of iTRAQ. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, the neurological deficit score was significantly reduced, and the escape latency in the MWM test was significantly shortened, while the number of platform crossings increased in the EA group. A total of 2872 proteins were identified by iTRAQ. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified between different groups: 92 proteins were upregulated and 103 were downregulated in the model group compared with the sham group, while 142 proteins were upregulated and 126 were downregulated in the EA group compared with the model group. Most of the DEPs were involved in oxidative phosphorylation, glycolipid metabolism and synaptic transmission. Furthermore, we also verified 4 DEPs using WB technology. Although the WB results were not exactly the same as the iTRAQ results, the expression trends of the DEPs were consistent. The upregulation of heat-shock protein ß1 (Hspb1) was the highest in the EA group compared to the model group. CONCLUSION: EA can effect proteomic changes in the hippocampus of rats with cognitive impairment. Hspb1 may be involved in the molecular mechanism by which acupuncture improves cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the pulse width of electroacupuncture (EA) in the treatment of denervation-induced skeletal muscle atrophy in rats and examine the role of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway during EA. METHODS: Sciatic nerve functional index (SFI), muscle wet weight and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the gastrocnemius muscle were analyzed after treatment in model rats with EA of various pulse widths (0.5, 50, 100 and 200 ms). The apoptosis index (AI) and paired box (PAX)3 and PAX7 protein expression were also determined. Further, the mRNA and protein expressions of components of IGF-1/PI3K/Akt pathway and their downstream targets were determined, along with the inhibiting effect of the pathway with a PI3-specific inhibitor. RESULTS: EA with a pulse width of 200 ms was found to have the best effect with regard to increasing SFI, CSA and muscle weight, decreasing AI, and increasing the expression of PAX3 and PAX7. The IGF-1/PI3K/Akt pathway was found to be activated by denervation, although the downstream forkhead box O (FoxO) pathway was not suppressed by its activation. The PI3K/Akt pathway and its downstream molecule mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) were up-regulated further by EA to promote muscle protein synthesis. Meanwhile, the expressions of downstream FoxO and F-box protein 32 (ATROGIN-1) were down-regulated to reduce protein degradation. CONCLUSIONS: EA with 200-ms pulse width was found to have a more significant effect than 0.5-ms EA. The positive effects of EA disappeared after inhibition of the PI3K/Akt pathway.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect on essential hypertension of the topical application of TAT-Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (TAT-SOD) at left acupoint Zusanli (ST 36), and to observe whether the change of electrical potential difference (EPD) can be related to the change of blood pressure. METHODS: Sixteen patients with essential hypertension and 16 healthy subjects were included in the study. EPD between the left acupoints of Yanglingquan (GB 34) and Qiuxu (GB 40) was firstly screened out for the EPD detection. An intracellular superoxide quenching enzyme, TAT-SOD, was topically applied to the acupoint ST 36 within an area of 1 cm2 once a day, and the influence on EPD was investigated. The dosage applied to TAT-SOD group (n=8) was 0.2 mL of 3000 U/mL TAT-SOD cream prepared by adding purified TAT-SOD to a vehicle cream, while placebo group (n=8) used the vehicle cream instead. The left acupoints of Yanglingquan (GB 34) and Qiuxu (GB 40) were selected for EPD measurement after comparing EPD readings between 5 acupoints on each of all 12 meridians. RESULTS: EPDs between the left acupoints of GB 34 and GB 40 for 16 patients of essential hypertension and 16 healthy subjects were 44.9±6.4 and 5.6±0.9 mV, respectively. Daily application of TAT-SOD for 15 days at ST 36 of essential hypertension patients significantly decreased systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 179.6 and 81.5 mm Hg to 153.1 and 74.1 mm Hg, respectively. Responding to the change in blood pressure, EPD between the left acupoints of GB 34 and GB 40 also declined from 44.4 to 22.8 mV with the same trend. No change was observed with SBP, DBP and EPD between the left acupoints of GB 34 and GB 40 with the daily application of the placebo cream. CONCLUSION: Enzymatic scavenging of the intracellular superoxide at ST 36 proved to be effective in decreasing SBP and DBP. The results reconfirm the involvement of superoxide anions and its transportation along the meridians, and demonstrate that EPD between acupoints may be an indicator to reflect its functioning status. Moreover, preliminary results suggest a close correlation between EPD and blood pressure readings, implying a possibility of using EPD as a sensitive parameter for blood pressure and to monitor the effect of antihypertensive treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the specificity of the relevant points along the governor vessel in chronic gastritis through the synchronous observation of the tenderness reaction and tenderness threshold on the back along the governor vessel in the volunteers with chronic gastritis and make the comparison with healthy volunteers. METHODS: A chronic gastritis group and a healthy volunteer group were prepared, 30 cases in each one. Using synchronous comparison, the tenderness reaction at the point inferior to each of the spinous processes from T1 to L3 along the governor vessel was observed. The mechanical pressure pain threshold was determined. RESULTS: Regarding the tenderness reaction at the point inferior to each spinous process on the back along the governor vessel, the occurrence rate was different significantly between the chronic gastritis group and the healthy volunteer group (P<0.01). The tenderness threshold at the point inferior to each spinous process from T1 to L3 along the governor vessel in the chronic gastritis group was lower than the healthy volunteer group, the tenderness thresholds from T4 to T9 and T12 were different significantly between the two groups (P<0.01, P<0.05). The tenderness reaction at the point inferior to each spinous process on the back along the governor vessel presented the significant negative correlation with the tenderness threshold in the chronic gastritis group (P<0.01), and the correlation was not displayed in the healthy volunteer group (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The point inferior to the spoinous process of T4 on the governor vessel, Shendao (GV 11, T5) and Lingtai (GV 10, T6) are the points with the high specificity in chronic gastritis, which provides the reference to clinical treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion. The occurrence rate of high tenderness reaction and the low tenderness threshold may be the important manifestation of the point specificity on the back along the governor vessel in chronic gastritis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on learning-memory ability and its correlation with miR-664-3p levels in the hippocampus in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CI/RI) rats. METHODS: A total of 27 male SD rats were randomly divided into sham operation, CI/RI model and EA groups (nï¼9 in each group). The CI/RI model was established by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MACO) according to the modified Longa methods. EA was applied to "Baihui" (GV20) and "Shenting" (GV24) for 20 min, once a day for 7 days. The Morris water maze tests (place navigation tasks and spatial probe trials) were used to evaluate the rats' learning-memory ability. After EA intervention, the hippocampal tissue was collected to measure the mRNA and miRNA expression profiles by using high-throughput next generation sequencing. Bioinformatics analyses including Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were performed to screen the most abundant differentially-expressed miRNAs and mRNAs, particularly the target genes of miR-664-3p. Their biological functional categories including the key biochemical metabolic pathways and signaling pathways involved in CI and EA effect in the left hippocampus tissue were analyzed. RESULTS: The average escape latency of place navigation tests was significantly longer in the CI/RI model group than in the sham operation group (P<0.01), and obviously shorter in the EA group than in the model group (P<0.01); and the times of escape-platform quadrant crossing of the spatial probe trials were considerably fewer in the CI/RI model group than in the sham operation group (P<0.05), and markedly more in the CI/RI EA group than in the model group (P<0.05). Combined analysis of miRNA and mRNA showed that the differentially-expressed target genes of miR-664-3p were significantly up-regulated after CI/RI relevant to the sham operation rats (P<0.05) and notably down-regulated in the EA group relevant to the CI/RI model group (P<0.05). The GO analysis displayed that the target genes of miR-664-3p were significantly enriched in the category of cell transportation activity, ion bindingï¼and transmembrane transporter activity, the production of precursor metabolites and energy, transportation, signal transductionï¼localization, etc. KEGG analysis showed that the target genes of miR-664-3p in this study were mainly enriched in the thyroid hormone pathway, Hippo signaling pathway, MAPK signal transduction pathwayï¼cAMP signaling pathway, neurotrophic factor signal transduction pathway, etc. CONCLUSION: EA of GV20 and GV24 can improve the learning-memory ability of CI/RI rats, which is closely related to its effect in down-regulating the levels of hippocampal target genes of miR-664-3p involving cellular transmembrane transportationï¼cell to environment interactionï¼cell-cell communication, etc.

OBJECTIVE: To observe changes of skin temperature along the Governor Vessel (GV) after moxibustion stimulation. METHODS: A total of 36 healthy volunteer subjects were recruited in the present study. The skin temperature of Mingmen (GV 4), Dazhui (GV 14), Shenzhu (GV 12), Zhiyang (GV 9), Zhongshu (GV 7), Yaoyangguan (GV 3) regions and their bilateral control sites (1.5 cun lateral to GV 4) was detected by using a Thermo Tracer TH 9100. RESULTS: Following moxibustion stimulation of GV 4 region, a marked infrared radiant track along the central part of the back covering the GV was observed in the healthy volunteer subjects, and the skin temperature levels of both GV 4 and its bilateral control points were significantly increased (P < 0.001). The skin temperature of GV 4 was remarkably higher than those of both left and right control points (P < 0.001). After moxibustion stimulation, the average skin temperature levels of GV 9, GV 7, GV 4 and GV 3 were all up-regulated in comparison with pre-moxibustion (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion stimulation of Mingmen (GV 4) can induce an infrared radiant track along the central part of the back covering the GV and raise skin temperature of acupoint areas of the GV.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of different acupoints at the distal ends of the limbs on cardiac function in volunteers with acute hypoxia, so as to determine if its actions are realized by way of segmental innervations or meridians. METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers were divided into control, Quze (PC 3), Shousanli (LI 10), Guangming (GB 37) and Zusanli (ST 36) groups (both PC 3 and LI 10 are innervated by spinal C3-C6, and both ST 36 and GB 37 innervated by L5-S1). Acute hyoxia (simulating the conditions of about 5,000 m height above the sea level) was induced by asking the volunteers to inhale low-oxygen gas mixture (10.8% O2 + 89.2% N2) for 30 min, when, the participants' cardiac output (CO), heart rate (HR), left cardiac work (LOW), left ventricular ejection time (LVET)were measured using a ICG Monitor and EA stimulation (10 Hz/20 Hz, 1-2 V) was also conducted for 20 min following inhaling low-oxygen for 10 min. RESULTS: Before low-oxygen inhale, the levels of CO, HR, LCW and LVET ratios (test value/basic value) of the control, PC 3, LI 10, ST 36 and GB 37 groups were comparable (P > 0.05). After inhaling low-oxygen gas mixture for 10 min, the levels of CO, HR, and LCW ratios were significantly increased, and the LVET ratios were notably decreased in the five groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the 10 min-low-oxygen inhale of the same one group, CO and HR ratios at both EA 10 min and 20 min in the PC 3 and ST 36 groups, LCW ratios at EA 10 min in both PC 3 and ST 36 groups were notably down-regulated (P < 0.05), while the LVET ratios of both PC 3 and ST 36 groups was significantly prolonged (P < 0.05). No significant changes of CO, HR, LCW and LVET ratios were found in the LI 10 and GB 37 groups after EA for 10 min and 20 min (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of Quze (PC 3) and Zusanli (ST 36), but not Shousanli (LI 10) and Guangming (GB 37) can lower CO, HR and LCW levels and increase LVET in volunteer subjects undergoing acute hypoxia, suggesting that the therapeutic effect of EA maybe not rely on the segmental innervations, but rather, depend on the meridians to which the acupoints belong.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation at Zhongwan (CV 12) on the skin microcirculatory blood flow along the Conception Vessel (CV) in yin-deficiency constitution volunteers. METHODS: A total of 16 yin-deficiency constitution volunteers (9 woman and 6 men) from 200 students of Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine finished a body constitution questionnaire and showed a yin-deficiency constitution. Skin microcirculatory blood perfusion units (MBPU) at Danzhong (CV 17), Xiawan (CV 10) , and Qihai (CV 6) of the CV were measured by using a Laser Doppler Flowmetry (Peri Flux 5000) in normal constitution, before and after EA stimulation of Zhongwan (CV 12) for 20 min. RESULTS: Under normal condition, the cutaneous MBPU values were significantly lower in the Qihai (CV 6) than in both Danzhong (CV 17) and Xiawan (CV 10) (P < 0.01). After EA stimulation of CV 12 for 20 min, the MBPU values were significantly decreased in the CV 17 and CV 6 acupoint regions compared with pre-stimulation (P < 0.05). No significant changes of skin MBPU were found in Xiawan (CV 10) after EA stimulation of CV 12 (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: EA at Zhongwan (CV 12) can reduce the skin MBPU values of CV 6 and CV 17 of the Conception Vessel in yin-deficiency constitution volunteers.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of different-frequency-electroacupuncture (EA) and moxibustion stimulation on rabbits' arrhythmias. METHODS: Newzealand rabbits were randomly divided into arrhythmia model (n = 18), EA-3 Hz (n = 19), EA-20 Hz (n = 19), EA-100 Hz (n = 18) and moxibustion (n = 18) groups. The arrhythmia model was induced by intravenous injection of 25 µg/kg aconitine. EA (3 Hz, 20 Hz or 100 Hz, 3.5-4 V) or moxibustion was applied to bilateral "Neiguan" (PC 6) for 20 min and electrocardiogram (ECG) of the standard limb lead II was recorded by using a Biosignal Processing Instrument. The concentration of serum hypersensitive C reactive protein (hs-CRP) content was detected by using ELISA method. RESULTS: Following EA intervention, the duration of aconitine-induced arrhythmia was significantly shorter in both EA-20 Hz and EA-100 Hz groups than in the model group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), and the serum hs-CRP level in the EA-20 Hz group was significantly lower than that of the model group ( P < 0.05). No significant changes were found in the duration of arrhythmia in both EA-3 Hz and moxibustion groups, and in the serum hs-CRP level in the EA-3 Hz, EA-100.Hz and the moxibustion groups (P > 0. 05). CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of PC 6 at 20 Hz and 100 Hz has an anti-arrhythmic effect in aconitine-induced arrhythmia rabbits.

Previous studies suggest that superoxide anions are possibly traveling along acupuncture meridians. The electrical potential difference (EPD) between acupoints may be related to the movement. To test the above hypothesis, we conducted a study investigating the effects of acupoint antioxidant interventions on the meridian EPD. Firstly, ST39 (L) and ST44 (L) were screened out for the EPD detection along the stomach meridian, and ST36 (L) was selected for interventions including acumassage with the control cream, as well as the TAT-SOD cream for 30 minutes, or injection with reduced glutathione sodium. The EPD between ST39 and ST44 was recorded for 80 minutes and measured again 48 h later. While the EPD increased during the acumassage, the acumassage with TAT-SOD cream and the glutathione injection generated waves of EPD increased, indicating the migration or removal from the visceral organ of a greater quantity of superoxide. Remarkably lower EPD readings 48 h later with both antioxidant acupoint interventions than the mere acumassage imply a more complete superoxide flushing out due to the restored superoxide pathway at the acupoint after interventions. The results confirm superoxide transportation along the meridians and demonstrate a possibility of acupoint EPD measurement as a tool to monitor changes in the meridians and acupoints.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) is a traditional Chinese medicine treatment guided by meridian theory. As it gradually gains more worldwide acceptance, a clarification of its mechanisms is extremely urgent. We observed variations in transcutaneous oxygen pressure/carbon dioxide pressure (tcpO2/tcpCO2) and microcirculation blood perfusion units (BPU) along the pericardium meridian, and cardiac function during EA at Neiguan (PC6) to explore variations in energy metabolism and its relationship with visceral function adjustments during EA. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy volunteers participated in this study. Three channel laser Doppler flowmetry and tcpO2/tcpCO2 detection systems were used to detect tcpO2/tcpCO2 and microcirculation BPU along the pericardium meridian. A hemodynamic monitor was used to detect cardiac function. RESULTS: In the normal state, the microcirculatory BPU along the pericardium meridian were significantly higher than that of their bilateral corresponding control points (p < 0.05). During EA at PC6, the values of the microcirculatory BPU along the pericardium meridian did not vary, and few increased. In the normal state, the values of tcpO2 along the pericardium meridian were significantly higher than those of their bilateral corresponding control points (p < 0.05). In addition, the values of tcpCO2 along the pericardium meridian were lower than those of their bilateral corresponding control points. In comparison with the normal state, EA could decrease tcpO2 along the meridian significantly (p < 0.05) and increase tcpCO2. During EA at PC6 in healthy volunteers treated by artificial acute mild hypoxia, cardiac output and cardiac index (p < 0.05) decreased and systemic vascular resistance increased significantly (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In the normal state, the values of microcirculatory BPU and tcpO2 along the pericardium meridian were both higher than those of their bilateral corresponding control points. Energy metabolism was vigorous along the meridian. During EA, the decrease in oxygen partial pressure along the pericardium meridian might be a result of strengthened energy metabolism of associated tissue and increased oxygen consumption. The variations in energy metabolism along the pericardium meridian during the course of EA had a close relationship with visceral function adjustments. OBJECTIVE: To observe the difference of the microcirculatory blood perfusion between acupoints and non-acupoints of the Stomach Meridian and its bilateral control points and to analyze the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on subcutaneous microcirculatory perfusion in healthy volunteers. METHODS: A total of 21 healthy adult volunteers were recruited in the present study. Subcutaneous microcirculatory blood perfusion units (BPU) of Shangjuxu (ST 37), Liangqiu (ST 34), Yinshi (ST 33), Futu (ST 32) and non-acupoint (the midpoint between ST 33 and ST 32) of the Stomach Meridian and their bilateral on-meridian points were measured by using Laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF, PeriFlux 5000). EA (0.5 Hz,duration 0.2 ms, 3-4 V) was applied to Zusanli (ST 36) for 10 min. The subcutaneous microcirculatory perfusion was detected under room temperature of (28 +/- 1) degree C and humidity of about 60% after inserting a single-use syringe needle into the subcutaneous tissues (about 1 cm in depth). RESULTS: In comparison with the bilateral control points, the subcutaneous microcirculatory BPU values of Shangjuxu (ST 37), Liangqiu (ST 34), Yinshi (ST 33), Futu (ST 32) and non-acupoint regions of the Stomach Meridian were significantly higher (P < 0.01). In comparison with pre-EA, the cutaneous microcirculatory BPU was increased mildly after EA of ST 36 (P > 0.05). Following EA for 5 to 10 min, the waveforms of LDF of the Stomach Meridian got regular and smooth. CONCLUSION: The microcirculatory blood perfusion of acupoints and non-acupoint of the Stomach Meridian in the deeper subcutaneous tissues are significantly higher than that of their bilateral corresponding control points, suggesting that subcutaneous microvascular blood flow may be the heat source for forming infrared radiation trace along the meridian in the human body observed in our past studies.

OBJECTIVE: To find out the regular pattern of pain reaction by pressing along the Governor Vessel at the levels of T3 to L4 on the back in patients with digestive system disease, so as to provide references for diagnosis of the disease. METHODS: Thirty patients diagnosed with digestive system disease by gastroscopy and colonoscopy as well as 16 patients with digestive symptoms without accurate diagnosis by endoscopy checks were observed. Pressing was applied from Zhiyang (GV 9) to Yaoyangguan (GV 3), including non-acupoints along the Governor Vessel. Positive reaction was recognized since pain, soreness or distension sensation appeared in the space between the spinous process. RESULTS: The positive ratios of 30 patients with endoscopy checks and 16 without the check accounted for 100.0%. The tender spots, usually 5 to 9 in number, were mainly focused on the relative acupoints and non-acupoints along the Governor Vessel from T6 to T10. CONCLUSION: The pain reaction from Lingtai (GV 10) to Zhongshu (GV 7), which are at the level of T6 to T10, along the Governor Vessel is closely related with digestive system disease. And it can be regarded as function criterion of the digestive system and important reference of auxiliary diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of different acupoints on electroretinogram (ERG) and cerebral visual evoked potentials (VEP) in healthy subjects so as to evaluate the relative specificity of the function of acupoints. METHODS: A total of 33 healthy adult volunteers were observed in the present study. The subject was asked to lie on a testing bed for a while, two disk electrodes were respectively fixed to the suborbital region and the occiput (the crossing point, 5 cm apart from the right median line of the head and 5 cm above the ear), and the reference electrode was fixed to the medial side of the earlobe for recording ERG and cerebral VEP separately. The testing room was asked to keep faint light during the whole recording process. A flash stimulation (frequency 1 Hz) was applied to the subject's eye (with a distance of about 50 cm between the light source and the tested eye, and the other eye was covered by an eyepatch). EA (0.5 Hz, 0.2 ms and 3-4 V) was applied to Guangming (GB 37), Neiguan (PC 6) and Zusanli (ST 36) for 30 min respectively in different testing days (with the interval being 3 days at least). ERG and cerebral VEP were recorded by using Polygraphy (RM-6200). RESULTS: Following EA of Guangming (GB 37), Neiguan (PC 6) and Zusanli (ST 36),the changing values (increase and decrease) of the amplitude of b waves of ERG and P100 waves of cerebral VEP were (19.68 +/- 12.61)% and (12.84 +/- 14.08)%, (6.09 +/- 14.06)% and (5.61 +/- 8.01)%, (2.39 +/- 3.52)% and (5.43 +/- 8.22)%, respectively, while those of b waves of ERG and P100 waves of cerebral VEP of GB 37 were significantly bigger than those of PC 6 and ST 36 (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: EA of Guangming (GB 37)can significantly change the amplitude of both ERG and cerebral VEP in volunteer subjects, which is markedly bigger than those of EA of Zusanli (ST 36) and Neiguan (PC 6), suggesting a relative specificity of the effect of EA of different acupoints.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the difference of the microcirculation blood perfusion volume between the Governor Vessel (GV) running course and its bilateral control points in healthy volunteers. METHODS: A total of 53 healthy volunteers were recruited in the present study. Cutaneous and muscular microvascular blood perfusion units (BPU) of Mingmen (GV 4), Jizhong (GV 6), Zhiyang (GV 9), Shenzhu (GV 12) and non-acupoint (at the 12th thoracic vertebra level) of GV and their bilateral non-meridian points (1 cm lateral to the above mentioned GV-acupoints and non-acupoint on both sides) were measured by using a Laser Doppler Flowmetry (PeriFlux 5000). RESULTS: 1) In comparison with bilateral control points, the cutaneous microvascular BPU values of Mingmen (GV 4), Jizhong (GV 6), Zhiyang (GV 9), Shenzhu (GV 12) and non-acupoint of GV Meridian were significantly higher (P < 0.01). 2) Compared with bilateral control points, BPU values of GV4, GV6, GV9, GV12 and non-acupoint of GV Meridian 1 cm, 1.5 cm and 2 cm beneath the skin were significantly higher (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the bilateral corresponding control points of GV4, GV6, GV9, GV12 and non-acupoint of GV in cutaneous BPU values, and between bilateral control points and GV4 in BPU values of deep (2.5 cm beneath the skin) tissues (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Blood flow perfusion volumes in the skin and deeper tissues along GV are significantly higher than those of their bilateral corresponding control points, indicating that cutaneous microvascular blood flow and shallower muscular blood flow may be the heat source for forming infrared radiation trace along meridian (IRRTM) in our past studies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate six trace elements including Cr, Zn, Mn, Se, Cu and V of 13 traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) commonly used in diet therapy of diabetes mellitus. METHOD: The samples were prepared through digesting in a microwave oven and determined with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). RESULT: The correlative coefficients of the calibration curves were above 0.999. Standard addition recovery was 88.7% - 110.0% and RSD < or = 7.0%. Under the given analytical conditions, the results obtained showed that the contents of the six trace elements varied in these TCM samples, for element Cr, ranging between 0-11.82 microg x g(-1), Mn in 4.36-564.3 microg x g(-1), Cu in 0.55-13.34 microg x g(-1), Zn in 3.19-86.23 microg x g(-1) Se in 0-0.39 microg x g(-1) and V in 0.05-12.04 microg x g(-1), respectively. CONCLUSION: The possible relationship between the content of the six trace elements and 13 TCM samples for dietetic therapy of diabetes mellitus was also discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermal conductivity of the related tissues along meridian line and non-meridian area. METHODS: Forty healthy volunteers were observed with a infrared thermal imaging system. RESULTS: During heating the acupoint or the non-acupoint along the meridian line, the velocity of spreading of the temperature-increasing response along the meridian line was more easy and rapid, with a definite direction. However, during heating the non-meridian spots, the change of temperature was confined to the local area, with no definite direction. The spreading of skin temperature response along the meridian line was more rapid than the non-meridian area during both the two were heated simultaneously, and finally, 3 infrared radiant tracks along the meridian courses conformed basically with that of the classical three yin- meridians of the hand appeared. CONCLUSION: The thermal conductivity of the related tissues along the meridian line is better than that of non-meridian area and has definite direction, with differences in physical characteristics between them.

Fluo-3/AM, a calcium indicator, was introduced by low temprature loading method into callus protoplasts of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. The microscope observation results showed that NaCl in different concentrations (30-200mmol/L) can elevate the intracellular calcium concentration in protoplasts. The elevation was related to the amount of salinity. The effect of salinity stress was inhibited by LiCl pretreatment but restored by inositol pretreatment. This suggested that salinity stress promoted the cytoplasmic calcium activity, perhaps by activating the phosphoinoditide system. As a result of salinity stress signals, elevated calcium activity may trigger corresponding metabolic changes, such as synthesis of enzyme via activating other members of calcium signal system, fit the cells for the change of the environment.
