RESUMO

Fermented Chinese medicine (FCM), as a functional feed additive, has been widely recognized to play a significant role in protecting the intestinal health of piglets and enhancing productive performance. However, the relationship between the active components of FCM, gut microbiota, and their beneficial effects on animal performance remains unclear. In this study, metabolomics analysis revealed a significant increase in the main contents of lactic acid and propionic acid in FCM, while most glycosides and their derivatives decreased after three days of microbial fermentation. Subsequently, piglets were fed a basic diet supplemented with 1% FCM, while the control group received only the basic diet. The results indicated a significant increase in feed intake and average daily gain within 14 days (P<0.05) due to FCM supplementation. Additionally, FCM significantly improved feed efficiency from 1.76 to 1.50 (P<0.05), and piglets in the FCM group exhibited significantly lower frequencies of diarrhea and coughing, which indicated improved health condition by FCM. Moreover, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed higher abundances of Lactobacillus agilis, Megasphaera elsdenii, Ligilactobacillus, and Veillonellaceae in FCM group. In summary, FCM increased the content of active metabolites through microbial fermentation and regulated the intestinal microbiota to improve the health of piglets. FCM offers a promising potential for enhancing production performance and economic efficiency in the livestock industry.

RESUMO

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) with solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) are highly promising for next-generation energy storage due to their enhanced safety and energy density. However, the stability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium metal/SPE interface is a major challenge, as continuous SEI degradation and regeneration during cycling lead to capacity fading. This article investigates the SEI formation on lithium anodes (l-SEI) and composite lithium anodes (c-SEI) in solid-state lithium metal batteries. The composite anodes form a uniform Li2S-rich inorganic SEI layer and a thinner organic SEI layer, effectively passivating the interface for enhanced cycling stability. Specifically, the full cells with c-SEI anodes sustain over 400 cycles at 0.5 C under a high areal capacity of 2.0 mAh cm-2. Moreover, the reversible high-loading solid-state pouch cells exhibit exceptional safety even after curling and cutting. These findings offer valuable insights into developing composite electrodes with robust SEI for solid-state polymer-based lithium metal batteries.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Asian woman was admitted with worsening chest tightness and dyspnea for 10 days. Computed tomography (CT) showed changes in the trachea and segmental bronchi. Pulmonary function results suggestive of severe obstructive ventilatory dysfunction. Bronchoscopic findings showed the presence of multiple nodular lesions in the patient's trachea and left and right main bronchi. Bronchoscopic biopsy, lymph node biopsy and bone marrow aspiration flow cytometry test results led to a definitive diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), staged as Binet stage B and Rai stage 2.

Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials (LRMO) are promising for enhancing energy density of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Nonetheless, the development of efficient Li+/e- pathways is hindered by the poor electrical conductivity of LRMO cathodes and their incompatible interfaces with solid electrolytes (SEs). Herein, we propose a strategy of in-situ bulk/interfacial structure design to construct fast and stable Li+/e- pathways by introducing Li2WO4, which reduces the energy barrier for Li+ migration and enhances the stability of the surface oxygen structure. The reversibility of oxygen redox was improved, and the voltage decay of the LRMO cathode was addressed significantly. As a result, the bulk structure of the LRMO cathodes and the high-voltage solid-solid interfacial stability are improved. Therefore, the ASSBs achieve a high areal capacity (∼3.15 mAh/cm2) and outstanding cycle stability of ≥1200 cycles with 84.1% capacity retention at 1 C at 25 °C. This study offers new insights into LRMO cathode design strategies for ASSBs, focusing on ultrastable high-voltage interfaces and high-loading composite electrodes.

Epoxide hydrolases (EHs) catalyze the conversion of epoxides into vicinal diols. The epoxide hydrolase gene from P. chrysosporium was previously cloned and subjected to site-directed mutation to study its enzyme activity, but the results were unsatisfactory. This study used error prone PCR and DNA shuffling to construct a PchEHA mutation library. We performed mutation-site combinations on PchEHA based on enzyme activity measurement results combined with directed evolution technology. More than 15,000 mutants were randomly selected for the preliminary screening of PchEHA enzyme activity alongside 38 mutant strains with increased enzyme activity or enantioselectivity. Protein expression and purification were conducted to determine the hydrolytic activity of PchEHA, and three mutants increased their activity by more than 95% compared with that of the wt. After multiple rounds of screening and site-specific mutagenesis, we found that F3 offers the best enzyme activity and enantioselectivity; furthermore, the molecular docking results confirmed this result. Overall, this study uncovered novel mutants with potential value as industrial biocatalysts.

BACKGROUND: Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most economically significant crops globally. Nevertheless, potato cultivation is becoming increasingly susceptible to a multitude of diseases, including bacterial wilt, which is caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. OBJECTIVE: To identify the GRF gene family in potatoes and to examine their expression profiles in response to hormones and R. solanacearum infection. METHODS: A comprehensive genome-wide analysis was conducted to identify the GRF gene family in the potato genome. RESULTS: A total of 13 GRF genes were identified from the latest potato genome, including five StGRFs belonging to the ɛ group and eight of the non-ɛ group. The transcriptional responses of the StGRFs to two biotic stress-related phytohormones (SA and MeJA) were defined, as well as the response to infection with R. solanacearum in a bacterial wilt-sensitive cultivar, S. tuberosum 'Qingshu 9'. Many StGRF genes exhibited high induction levels in response to R. solanacearum infection and SA treatment while displaying a marked decline in expression in the presence of MeJA. Furthermore, protein interaction network analysis revealed that the StGRF proteins interact with several candidate target proteins, indicating that GRF proteins are ubiquitous regulators in potatoes. However, the associations between two type III effectors (T3Es) RipAC/RipH2 from R. solanacearum isolates and StGRF7 were not detectable in a yeast two-hybrid assay. CONCLUSION: This study provides comprehensive information on the GRF gene family and lays a foundation for further research on the molecular mechanism of potato biotic stress adaptation.

The spoilage of irradiated ready-to-eat chicken feet (RTECF) seriously affects the food's quality, resulting in package swelling and off-flavors, both of which are highly undesirable to stakeholders and consumers. To investigate the spoilage characteristics of irradiated RTECF and the microorganisms responsible for the spoilage and swelling, the changes in physicochemical properties, microbial community, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) between normal and spoiled RTECF were evaluated. Compared with normal samples, the spoiled RTECF showed a higher pH value and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) value, lower color value, and texture features (P < 0.05). Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Lactobacillus, and Candida were the dominant genera responsible for RTECF spoilage as confirmed through both culture-dependent methods and high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The results of the verification for gas-producing strains showed that Lactobacillus brevis could cause RTECF packaging to swell. A total of 20 key VOCs were identified using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The results of Pearson correlation analysis (|r|>0.8, P < 0.05) showed that 12 dominant core microbial genera had a significant effect on the flavor of RTECF before and after spoilage. This study provides a theoretical reference for solving the problem of RTECF spoilage and improving the overall quality of RTECF products.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a highly contagious disease caused by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), which results in significant economic losses. PEDV infection causes severe damage to the midgut barrier in the small intestine. YBX3, an important protein in tight junctions, promotes epithelial cell proliferation. However, its role in the process of PEDV infection remains unclear. In this study, we observed a significant increase in mRNA expression of YBX3 following PEDV infection. Additionally, the protein expression of YBX3 showed an initial increase followed by a decrease over time. Furthermore, treatment with 2% DSS resulted in a significant down-regulation of YBX3 mRNA and protein expression. Furthermore, we successfully generated knockout and overexpression cell lines of YBX3. Preliminary assays indicated that elevated expression of YBX3 inhibited the PEDV replication, while knockout of YBX3 had the opposite effect. In conclusion, our study has preliminarily revealed the functional role of YBX3 during PEDV infection. This finding lays the foundation for further investigation into its mechanism in future and also provides new insights into the mechanism of PEDV-host interactions.

Rett syndrome (RTT), a severe neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the MeCP2 gene, is characterized by cognitive and social deficits. Previous studies have noted hypoactivity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) pyramidal neurons of MeCP2-deficient mice (RTT mice) in response to both social and nonsocial stimuli. To further understand the neural mechanisms behind the social deficits of RTT mice, we monitored excitatory pyramidal neurons in the prelimbic region of the mPFC during social interactions in mice. These neurons' activity was closely linked to social preference, especially in wild-type mice. However, RTT mice showed reduced social interest and corresponding hypoactivity in these neurons, indicating that impaired mPFC activity contributes to their social deficits. We identified six mPFC neural ensembles selectively tuned to various stimuli, with RTT mice recruiting fewer neurons to ensembles responsive to social interactions and consistently showing lower stimulus-ON ensemble transient rates. Despite these lower rates, RTT mice exhibited an increase in the percentage of social-ON neurons in later sessions, suggesting a compensatory mechanism for the decreased firing rate. This highlights the limited plasticity in the mPFC caused by MeCP2 deficiency and offers insights into the neural dynamics of social encoding. The presence of multifunctional neurons and those specifically responsive to social or object stimuli in the mPFC emphasizes its crucial role in complex behaviors and cognitive functions, with selective neuron engagement suggesting efficiency in neural activation that optimizes responses to environmental stimuli.

Chronic diabetic wounds are difficult to treat due to imbalanced inflammatory responses, high blood glucose levels, and bacterial infections. Novel therapeutic approaches based on nucleic acid analogues have been proposed, with unique advantages in improving angiogenesis, increasing collagen synthesis, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. However, the inherent electronegativity of nucleic acids makes them less susceptible to cellular uptake. In this paper, a kind of near infrared (NIR)-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel loaded with nucleic acid vectors was proposed for promoting wound healing. The redox system composed of molybdenum disulphide nanosheets (MoS2 NSs) initiated the copolymerization of quaternized chitosan containing double bonds and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) to form the matrix. In addition, MoS2 NSs with photothermal conversion performance endow the nanocomposite hydrogel to have NIR-response property and act as physical crosslinking points in the matrix. Polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN), which have the effect of promoting wound healing, were made into nucleic acid vectors, and loaded into the NIR-responsive hydrogel. MoS2 NSs can convert NIR irradiation into heat, causing phase transitions of temperature-sensitive segments that trigger volume contraction of the hydrogel to extrude the nucleic acid vector. Promoting angiogenesis, slowing inflammation, and guiding tissue regeneration were demonstrated in the diabetic wound model treated with the NIR-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel.

BACKGROUND: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is known to be associated with a negative emotional state. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are important tools for evaluating the endpoints of AF management. This study aims to examine the correlation between personality types and PROs in patients with AF. METHODS: All included subjects were newly diagnosed with AF fewer than one month, and their personality types were assessed using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Quality of life (QoL) was measured using the Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality of Life (AFEQT) questionnaire. Anxiety and depression were assessed using the General Anxiety Scale (GAD-7) and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. We constructed stepwise linear regression analyses for factors related to the QoL and emotional state in patients with AF. RESULTS: A total of 531 AF patients completed the survey and were categorized into four groups based on their personality types. Of these patients (mean age: 67.12 ± 10.93 years, 50.28% male), 357 (67.23%) had paroxysmal AF, and 16.95% (n = 90) had a sanguine personality. Compared to patients with other personality types, those with a sanguine personality had the highest average AFEQT scores (P < 0.001) and the lowest scores of GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scales (P < 0.05). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analyses suggested that sanguine personality was also independently associated with better QoL and emotional states (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There is a significant association between the personality types and PROs in AF patients.

Solid-state polymer lithium metal batteries are an important strategy for achieving high safety and high energy density. However, the issue of Li dendrites and inherent inferior interface greatly restricts practical application. Herein, this study introduces tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)phosphate solvent with moderate solvation ability, which can not only complex with Li+ to promote the in-situ ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL), but also build solvated structure models to explore the effect of different solvation structures in the polymer electrolyte. Thereinto, it is dominated by the contact ion pair solvated structure with pDOL chain segments forming less lithium bonds, exhibiting faster kinetic process and constructing a robust anion-derived inorganic-rich interphase, which significantly improves the utilization rate of active Li and the high-voltage resistance of pDOL. As a result, it exhibits stable cycling at ultra-high areal capacity of 20 mAh cm-2 in half cells, and an ultra-long lifetime of over 2000 h in symmetric cells can be realized. Furthermore, matched with LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode, the capacity retention after 60 cycles is as high as 96.8% at N/P value of 3.33. Remarkably, 0.7 Ah Li||LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 pouch cell with an energy density of 461 Wh kg-1 can be stably cycled for five cycles at 100% depth of discharge.

The mutual interactions of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident proteins in the ER maintain its functions, prompting the protein folding, modification, and transportation. Here, a new method, named YST-PPI (YESS-based Split fast TEV protease system for Protein-Protein Interaction) was developed, targeting the characterization of protein interactions in ER. YST-PPI method integrated the YESS system, split-TEV technology, and endoplasmic reticulum retention signal peptide (ERS) to provide an effective strategy for studying ER in situ PPIs in a fast and quantitative manner. The interactions among 15 ER-resident proteins, most being identified molecular chaperones, of S. cerevisiae were explored using the YST-PPI system, and their interaction network map was constructed, in which more than 74 interacting resident protein pairs were identified. Our studies also showed that Lhs1p plays a critical role in regulating the interactions of most of the ER-resident proteins, except the Sil1p, indicating its potential role in controlling the ER molecular chaperones. Moreover, the mutual interaction revealed by our studies further confirmed that the ER-resident proteins perform their functions in a cooperative way and a multimer complex might be formed during the process.

OBJECTIVE: We intended to map the single-cell profile of OLP, explore the molecular characteristics of unconventional T cells in OLP tissues. METHODS: Buccal mucosa samples from OLP patients and healthy individuals were used to prepare single-cell suspension. Single-cell RNA sequencing was used to analyze the proportion of all the cells, and the molecular characteristics of unconventional T cells. Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of unconventional T cells marker genes. RESULTS: The cell clusters from buccal mucosa were categorized into immune cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells. Unconventional T cells with phenotype of CD247+TRDC+NCAM1+ were identified. Immunohistochemical staining revealed higher expression of unconventional T cell marker genes in OLP tissue, predominantly in the lamina propria. In OLP, unconventional T cells are in a unique stress response state, exhibited enhanced NF-κB signaling and apoptosis inhibition, enhanced heat shock protein genes expression, weakened cytotoxic function. A large number of ligand-receptor pairs were found between unconventional T cells and other cells, particularly with fibroblasts and endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS: This study mapped the single-cell profile of OLP, delineated the molecular characteristics of unconventional T cells in OLP, and uncovered that these unconventional T cells are in a stress response state.

BACKGROUND: Investigating the spatial distribution of muscle activity would facilitate understanding the underlying mechanism of spasticity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of spastic muscles during passive stretch and active contraction by high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG). METHODS: Fourteen spastic hemiparetic subjects and ten healthy subjects were recruited. The biceps brachii (BB) muscle activity of each subject was recorded by HD-sEMG during passive stretch at four stretch velocities (10, 60, 120, 180˚/s) and active contraction at three submaximal contraction levels (20, 50, 80%MVC). The intensity and spatial distribution of the BB activity were compared by the means of two-way analysis of variance, independent sample t-test, and paired sample t-test. RESULTS: Compared with healthy subjects, spastic hemiparetic subjects showed significantly higher intensity with velocity-dependent heterogeneous activation during passive stretch and more lateral and proximal activation distribution during active contraction. In addition, spastic hemiparetic subjects displayed almost non-overlapping activation areas during passive stretch and active contraction. The activation distribution of passive stretch was more distal when compared with the active contraction. CONCLUSIONS: These alterations of the BB activity could be the consequence of deficits in the descending central control after stroke. The complementary spatial distribution of spastic BB activity reflected their opposite motor units (MUs) recruitment patterns between passive stretch and active contraction. This HD-sEMG study provides new neurophysiological evidence for the spatial relationship of spastic BB activity between passive stretch and active contraction, advancing our knowledge on the mechanism of spasticity. Herba Epimedii's leaves are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine for their substantial concentration of flavonoids, which play a crucial role in manifesting the plant's therapeutic properties. This study investigated the metabolomic, transcriptomic and proteomic profiles of leaves from two Herba Epimedii cultivars, Epipremnum sagittatum (J) and Epipremnum pubescens (R), at three different developmental stages. Metabolite identification and analysis revealed a total of 1,412 and 1,421 metabolites with known structures were found. Flavonoids made up of 33%, including 10 significant accumulated icariin analogues. Transcriptomic analysis unveiled totally 41,644 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) containing five encoded genes participated in icariin biosynthesis pathways. Totally, 9,745 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were found, including Cluster-47248.2.p1 (UDP-glucuronosy/UDP-glucosyltransferase), Cluster-30441.2.p1 (O-glucosyltransferase), and Cluster-28344.9.p1 (anthocyanidin 3-O-glucoside 2 "-O-glucosyltransferase-like) through proteomics analysis which are involved to icariin biosynthesis. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) assay exhibited, totally 12 proteins showing a strong relationship of false discovery rate (FDR) <0.05 with these three proteins containing 2 leucine-rich repeat receptor kinase-like protein SRF7, and 5 methyl jasmonate esterase 1. Multi-omics connection networks uncovered 237 DEGs and 72 DEPs exhibited significant associations with the 10 icariin analogues. Overall, our integrated omics approach provides comprehensive insights into the regulatory network underlying icariin synthesis in Herba Epimedii, offering valuable resources for further research and development in medicinal plant cultivation and pharmaceutical applications.

Background: Neutrophils play important roles in atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is mainly expressed in the granules of human neutrophils in response to inflammatory stress. This observational, cross-sectional study investigated the plasma level of BPI in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and its correlation with blood neutrophil counts and circulating inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: A total of 367 patients who had acute chest pain and who were admitted to our hospital for coronary angiography (CAG) and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from May 1, 2020 to August 31, 2020 were recruited. Among them, 256 had a cardiac troponin value above the 99th percentile upper reference limit and were diagnosed with ACS. The remaining patients (n = 111) were classified as non-ACS. The TIMI and GRACE scores were calculated at admission. The Gensini score based on CAG was used to determine atherosclerotic burden. Plasma levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß, myeloperoxidase-DNA (MPO-DNA), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), S100A8/A9, and BPI were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Correlations of plasma BPI levels with examination scores and levels of circulating inflammatory biomarkers were explored. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine the diagnostic efficacy of BPI for ACS and myocardial infarction. Results: Patients in the ACS group showed significantly higher plasma BPI levels compared to the non-ACS group (46.42 ± 16.61 vs. 16.23 ± 6.19 ng/mL, p < 0.05). Plasma levels of IL-1ß, MPO-DNA, hs-CRP, and S100A8/A9 in the ACS group were also significantly higher than those in the non-ACS group (all p < 0.05). In addition, plasma BPI levels were positively correlated with the TIMI, GRACE, and Gensini scores (r = 0.176, p = 0.003; r = 0.320, p < 0.001; r = 0.263, p < 0.001, respectively) in patients with ACS. Plasma BPI levels were also positively correlated with blood neutrophil counts (r = 0.266, p < 0.001) and levels of circulating inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1ß, r = 0.512; MPO-DNA, r = 0.452; hs-CRP, r = 0.554; S100A8/A9, r = 0.434; all p < 0.001) in patients with ACS. ROC curve analysis revealed that the diagnostic efficacy of BPI for ACS was not inferior to that of IL-1ß, MPO-DNA, hs-CRP, S100A8/A9, or blood neutrophil counts. ROC analysis also showed that the diagnostic efficacy of BPI for myocardial infarction was not inferior to that of creatine kinase (CK)-MB or cardiac troponin I. Conclusion: BPI is associated with systemic inflammation in ACS and may be involved in the process of atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. The potential of BPI as a prognostic and diagnostic biomarker for ACS should be investigated in clinical settings.

OBJECTIVE: The noninvasive right ventricular pressure-strain loop (PSL) represents a novel method for the quantitative assessment of right ventricular myocardial function. Given that atrial septal defect (ASD) is a prevalent congenital heart anomaly associated with right ventricular volume overload, this study aimed to quantitatively assess the myocardial function of the right ventricle in ASD patients pre- and post-occlusion by noninvasive right ventricular PSL. METHODS: This study included 36 patients diagnosed with secundum ASD group and 30 healthy adults (control group). We compared conventional right ventricular echocardiographic parameters, right ventricular strain, and myocardial work in the ASD group before occlusion, two days post-occlusion, and three months post-occlusion, with those in the control group. RESULTS: Prior to and two days following occlusion, the ASD group exhibited higher right ventricular global work index (RVGWI), right ventricular global wasted work (RVGWW), and right ventricular global constructive work (RVGCW) compared to the control group (P < .05). Within the ASD group, post-occlusion, RVGWI, RVGCW, and RVGWW values were significantly reduced compared to pre-occlusion values (P < .001). Furthermore, RVGWI and RVGCW showed a significant decrease three months after occlusion compared to two days post-occlusion (P < .05). Multivariate regression analysis identified ASD diameter and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) as independent predictors of RVGWI (ß = .405, P < .001; ß = 2.307, P = .037) and RVGCW(ß = .350, P<.001; ß = 1.967, P = .023). CONCLUSIONS: The noninvasive right ventricular PSL effectively demonstrates the alterations in right ventricular myocardial function in ASD patients, pre- and post-occlusion. The metrics of right ventricular myocardial work (RVMW) offer a novel indicator for evaluating right ventricular myocardial function in these patients. Moreover, ASD diameter and PASP emerge as independent determinants of RVGWI and RVGCW.

A novel surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME) system was proposed in this study, and applied in the crude oil removal and recovery from oily sludge (OS). Based on an investigation of the SFME phase behavior and solution properties, a complete ternary phase diagram was constructed. The SFME with three-liquid phase equilibrium (Winsor III type) was selected for the treatment of OS to achieve simultaneous efficient removal (up to 95.1 %) and recovery (up to 83.2 %) of crude oil. The SFME could be reused continuously for OS treatment without purification. The removal efficiency could still keep >75.9 % after 5 times of reuse, showing high reusability. The detached crude oil could be automatically recovered based on the phase equilibrium principle without additional separation. In the washing experiments, single-factor and multi-factor orthogonal tests were applied to investigate the effects of different experimental conditions on oil removal efficiency and determine the optimal experimental scheme. The treated OS was sufficiently decontaminated according to the morphology, composition, and properties analysis by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle. The composition of the recovered crude oil was identical to that of commercial crude oil according to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, showing a high recovery value. The kinetic analysis revealed that crude oil desorption experienced three main stages: membrane diffusion, intra-particle diffusion and surface desorption, and identified the chemisorption was the main interaction between the oil-soil. Finally, the mechanism of SFME action was assessed for dissolution and activation based on ultra-low IFT.

BACKGROUND: Melilotus, a member of the Fabaceae family, is a pivotal forage crop that is extensively cultivated in livestock regions globally due to its notable productivity and ability to withstand abiotic stress. However, the genetic attributes of the chloroplast genome and the evolutionary connections among different Melilotus species remain unresolved. RESULTS: In this study, we compiled the chloroplast genomes of 18 Melilotus species and performed a comprehensive comparative analysis. Through the examination of protein-coding genes, we successfully established a robust phylogenetic tree for these species. This conclusion is further supported by the phylogeny derived from single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the entire chloroplast genome. Notably, our findings revealed that M. infestus, M. siculus, M. sulcatus, and M. speciosus formed a distinct subgroup within the phylogenetic tree. Additionally, the chloroplast genomes of these four species exhibit two shared inversions. Moreover, inverted repeats were observed to have reemerged in six species within the IRLC. The distribution patterns of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions/deletions (InDels) within protein-coding genes indicated that ycf1 and ycf2 accumulated nonconservative alterations during evolutionary development. Furthermore, an examination of the evolutionary rate of protein-coding genes revealed that rps18, rps7, and rpl16 underwent positive selection specifically in Melilotus. CONCLUSIONS: We present a comparative analysis of the complete chloroplast genomes of Melilotus species. This study represents the most thorough and detailed exploration of the evolution and variability within the genus Melilotus to date. Our study provides valuable chloroplast genomic information for improving phylogenetic reconstructions and making biogeographic inferences about Melilotus and other Papilionoideae species.
