RESUMO

Quantifying terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET) and soil moisture dynamics accurately is crucial for understanding the global water cycle and surface energy balance. We present a novel, long-term dataset of global ET and soil moisture derived from the newly developed Simple Terrestrial Hydrosphere model, version 2 (SiTHv2). This ecohydrological model, driven by multi-source satellite observations and hydrometeorological variables from reanalysis data, provides daily global ET-related estimates (e.g., total ET, plant transpiration, soil evaporation, intercepted evaporation) and three-layer soil moisture dynamics at a 0.1° spatial resolution. Validation with in-situ measurements and comparisons with mainstream global ET and soil moisture products demonstrate robust performance of SiTHv2 in both magnitude and temporal dynamics of ET and soil moisture at multiple scales. The comprehensive water path characterization in the SiTHv2 model makes this seamless dataset particularly valuable for studies requiring synchronized water budget and vegetation response to water constraints. With its long-term coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution, the SiTHv2-derived ET and soil moisture product will be suitable to support analyses related to the hydrologic cycle, drought assessment, and ecosystem health.

RESUMO

Photocatalysis offers a direct, yet robust, approach to eradicate pathogenic bacteria. However, the practical implementation of photocatalytic disinfection faces a significant challenge due to low-efficiency photogenerated carrier separation and transfer. Here, we present an effective approach to improve photocatalytic disinfection performance by exploiting the pyro-phototronic effect through a synergistic combination of pyroelectric properties and photocatalytic processes. A set of comprehensive studies reveals that the temperature fluctuation-induced pyroelectric field promotes photoexcited carrier separation and transfer and thus facilitates the generation of reactive oxygen species and ultimately enhances photocatalytic disinfection performance. It is worth highlighting that the constructed film demonstrated an exceptional antibacterial efficiency exceeding 95% against pathogenic bacteria under temperature fluctuations and light irradiation. Moreover, the versatile modulation role of the pyro-phototronic effect in boosting photocatalytic disinfection was corroborated. This work paves the way for improving photocatalytic disinfection efficiency by harnessing the synergistic potential of various inherent material properties.

RESUMO

Background: Sleep disorders such as insomnia can lead to a range of health problems. The high risk of side effects and drug abuse of traditional pharmacotherapy calls for a safer non-pharmacotherapy. Aims: To examine the use and efficacy of weighted blankets in improving sleep and related disorders in different populations and explore the possible mechanisms. Methods: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library and CNKI databases. Eligible studies included an intervention with weighted blankets and outcomes covering sleep and/or related disorders (behavioral disturbance, negative emotions and daytime symptoms). Studies using other deep pressure, compression, or exercise-related interventions were excluded. Conclusions: Most of the included studies showed that weighted blankets could effectively improve sleep quality and alleviate negative emotions and daytime symptoms in patients with sleep disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and other related disorders, with a possible mechanism of deep pressure touch. Recommendations: Weighted blankets might be a promising tool for sleep interventions among individuals with sleep disorders in clinical settings. More high-quality and large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to further validate the safety and efficacy of weighted blankets and explore precise mechanisms.

RESUMO

Background: Nanovaccines have emerged as a promising vaccination strategy, exhibiting their capacity to deliver antigens and adjuvants to elicit specific immune responses. Despite this potential, optimizing the design and delivery of nanovaccines remains a challenge. Methods: In this study, we engineered a dendritic mesoporous silica-based nanocarrier enveloped in a metal-phenolic network (MPN) layer containing divalent manganese ions and tannic acid (MSN@MT). This nanocarrier was tailored for antigen loading to serve as a nanovaccine, aiming to activate the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway in dendritic cells (DCs). Our experimental approach encompassed both cellular assays and mouse immunizations, allowing a comprehensive evaluation of the nanovaccine's impact on DC activation and its influence on the generation of antigen-specific T-cell responses. Results: MSN@MT demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in humoral and cellular immune responses in mice compared to control groups. This highlights the potential of MSN@MT to effectively trigger the cGAS-STING pathway in DCs, resulting in robust immune responses. Conclusion: Our study introduces MSN@MT, a unique nanocarrier incorporating divalent manganese ions and tannic acid, showcasing its exceptional ability to amplify immune responses by activating the cGAS-STING pathway in DCs. This innovation signifies a stride in refining nanovaccine design for potent immune activation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of 6 to 24 h endovascular therapy (EVT) in patients with wake-up stroke (WUS) with acute large vessel occlusion (LVO) of the anterior circulation guided by noncontrast computed tomography-Alberta stroke program early CT score (NCCT-ASPECTS). METHODS: Fifty-three patients with WUS with acute LVO of the anterior circulation who were treated at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital of Zhejiang Medical College from January 2018 to March 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into NCCT-ASPECTS or CT perfusion groups. Baseline data, perioperative data, and 90-d prognostic information were compared between the two groups. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent factors influencing outcomes. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the good prognosis, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, and mortality rates between the two groups (P > 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the puncture-recanalization time was an independent factor for good prognosis. CONCLUSION: Based on NCCT-ASPECTS guidance, EVT in patients with WUS for acute LVO of the anterior circulation within 6 to 24 h may be safe and effective.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate how the mounting location of wearable devices affects the measurement of light intensity. METHODS: Two commercially available wearable devices, HOBO and Clouclip, were used to compare the effects of different mount locations on light intensity measurement. We assessed the consistency of the measurements of the two devices by placing a HOBO and a Clouclip simultaneously in 26 different light environments and measuring the light intensity. To simulate the real-life usage scenarios of the two devices, we had 29 participants wear two HOBOs-one on the wrist and the other on the chest-along with a Clouclip on their spectacles for 1 day; meanwhile, the light intensity was measured and analysed. RESULTS: When under the same light environments, the light intensity measured by the Clouclip was 1.09 times higher than that by the HOBO, with an additional 82.62 units (r2=1.00, p<0.001). When simulating the real-life scenarios, the mean light intensity at the eye-level position was significantly lower than that at the chest position (189.13±665.78 lux vs 490.75±1684.29 lux, p<0.001) and the wrist position (189.13±665.78 lux vs 483.87±1605.50 lux, p<0.001). However, there was no significant difference in light intensity between the wrist and chest positions (483.87±1605.50 lux vs 490.75±1684.29 lux, p=1.00). Using a threshold of 1000 lux for outdoor exposure, the estimated light exposure at the eye-level position was significantly lower than that at the chest position (3.9% vs 7.8%, χ2=266.14, p<0.001) and the wrist position (3.9% vs 7.7%, χ2=254.25, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings revealed significant variations in light exposure among the wrist, chest and eye position. Therefore, caution must be exercised when comparing results obtained from different wearable devices.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of mangiferin combined with bortezomib on the proliferation, invasion, apoptosis and autophagy of human Burkitt lymphoma Raji cells, as well as the expression of CXC chemokine receptors (CXCRs) family, and explore the molecular mechanism between them to provide scientific basis for basic research and clinical work of Burkitt lymphoma. METHODS: Raji cells were intervened with different concentrations of mangiferin and bortezomib alone or in combination, then cell proliferation was detected by CCK-8 assay, cell invasion ability was detected by Transwell chamber method, cell apoptosis was detected by Annexin V/PI double-staining flow cytometry, apoptosis, autophagy and Akt/mTOR pathway protein expression were detected by Western blot, and the expression changes of CXCR family was detected by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). RESULTS: Different concentrations of mangiferin intervened Raji cells for different time could inhibit cell viability in a concentration- and time-dependent manner (r =-0.682, r =-0.836). When Raji cells were intervened by combination of mangiferin and bortezomib, compared with single drug group, the proliferation and invasion abilities were significantly decreased, while the apoptosis level was significantly increased (P <0.01). Mangiferin combined with bortezomib could significantly up-regulate the expression of pro-apoptotic protein Bax and down-regulate the expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 after intervention in Raji cells. Caspase-3 was also hydrolyzed and activated, and then induced the apoptosis of Raji cells. Mangiferin combined with bortezomib could up-regulate the expression of LC3Ⅱ protein in Raji cells, and the ratio of LC3Ⅱ/LC3Ⅰ in cells was significantly up-regulated compared with single drug or control group (P <0.01). Mangiferin combined with bortezomib could significantly inhibit the phosphorylation levels of Akt and mTOR, inhibit the proliferation and invasion of Raji cells by inhibiting Akt/mTOR pathway, and induce cell autophagy and apoptosis. Mangiferin and bortezomib could down-regulate the expressions of CXCR4 and CXCR7 mRNA after single-agent intervention in Raji cells, and the down-regulations of CXCR4 and CXCR7 mRNA expression were more significant when the two drugs were combined (P <0.01). Mangiferin alone or combined with bortezomib had no significant effect on CXCR5 mRNA expression in Raji cells (P >0.05), while the combination of the two drugs could down-regulate the expression of CXCR3 (P <0.05). CONCLUSION: Mangiferin combined with bortezomib can synergistically inhibit the proliferation and invasion of Raji cells, and induce autophagy and apoptosis. The mechanism may be related to the inhibition of Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, down-regulation of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and up-regulation of pro-apoptotic protein Bax, and the inhibition of the expression of CXCR family.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore and analyze the clinical effect and potential value of a double-capsule fecal catheter device in patients with fecal incontinence in the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: A total of 107 patients with fecal incontinence who were admitted to the ICU of the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University from May 2017 to April 2023 were selected and randomly divided into the observation group and the control group, with 68 cases in the observation group and 39 cases in the control group. The observation group was given a double-capsule fecal catheter device, and the control group was given an ordinary fecal catheter device for drainage. The clinical baseline data, adverse events, skin conditions, changes of patients' quality of life (QoL), indicators from laboratory test, working pressure and burden of nursing, average length of stay (ALOS) and prognosis of patients were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in age, gender, body mass index (BMI), hypertension history, diabetes mellitus history and smoking history between the observation group and the control group (all P>0.05). The occurrence probability of the number of catheter obstructions, perianal leakage, catheter prolapse and the incidence of discomfort reactions in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). After the use of the double-capsule fecal catheter device, the skin condition of the patient's perineum and perianal area was significantly improved and remained dry and comfortable for a long time, and the recovery of the primary disease in patients with fecal incontinence was also more optimistic. After application of the double-capsule fecal catheter device, the scores of QoL significantly increased in patients from the observation group (P<0.05). After using the double-capsule fecal catheter device, the levels of WBC, neutrophils count, PCT and IL-6 in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group after nursing (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in levels of CRP, TNF-α, albumin and prealbumin between the two groups (P>0.05). The responsible nurses of the patients in the control group expressed significantly higher nursing work burden than the observation group (P<0.05). Patients in the observation group had shorter ALOS and lower mortality than those in the control group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The application of the novel double-capsule fecal catheter device can reduce the adverse events and working pressure and burden of nursing, it also improved skin condition and patients' QoL. Correspondingly, it improved relevant prognostic indicators during the patient's hospitalization. It has beneficial clinical practicability and popularity for fecal incontinence in patients, and it is worthy of use and promotion.

RESUMO

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore two-dimensional peripheral refraction and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) induced by orthokeratology lens decentration. Methods: Two-dimensional peripheral refraction and HOAs in a rectangular field (horizontally 60 degrees and vertically 36 degrees) were obtained using an open-view Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. The peripheral field was divided into 8 regions according to a combination of superior (UZ) or inferior (LZ) and a value, 1 (T25 to T30), 2 (T20 to T25), 3 (N20 to N25), or 4 (N25 to N30). The decentration of the lens was evaluated based on the change of power in the front of the tangential corneal map. All measurements were taken at the baseline and 1 month after lens fitting. Results: In total, 134 myopic children (age = 12.47 ± 1.70 years, SER = -2.44 ± 1.10 diopters [D]) were recruited. In general, horizontally asymmetrical change was observed in relative peripheral refraction (RPR), spherical aberration (SA), and horizontal coma. The root-mean square of higher order aberration (RMSHOA) and vertical coma demonstrated radial symmetrical change and vertically asymmetric change, respectively. Relative peripheral myopia was significantly increased after the treatment, with more myopic refraction in the temporal side. RPR changes in UZ2, UZ3, UZ4, LZ1, and LZ2 were related to the amount of lens decentration (r ≈ 0.4, P < 0.05). All HOAs increased after lens fitting (around 0.03 um, 0.02 um, 0.04 um, and 0.41 um for SA, horizontal COMA, vertical COMA, and RMSHOA in the periphery region). Conclusions: RPR and HOAs are related to lens decentration, which might contribute to the efficacy of orthokeratology. Translational Relevance: The study found a decentration-related optical feature after 1 month of lens wear, which is a suggested protective factor in myopia treatment. The findings might provide new insights for customized contact lens myopia treatment based on optics.

RESUMO

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is closely related to higher intracellular oxidative stress. Therefore, developing a novel method to scavenge the harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) and alleviate colon inflammation to treat IBD is a promising strategy. Methods: CeO2@PDA-PEG (CeO2@PP) were synthesized by modifying ceria (CeO2) nanorods with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The ROS scavenging ability of CeO2@PP was detected by using flow cytometry and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The anti-inflammatory ability of CeO2@PP was determined in vitro by treating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. The biocompatibility of CeO2@PP was evaluated in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, the therapeutic effects of CeO2@PP in vivo were estimated in a dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. Results: Physicochemical property results demonstrated that PDA and PEG modification endowed CeO2 nanorods with excellent dispersibility and colloidal stability. CeO2@PP maintained superior enzyme-like activity, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), indicating antioxidant ability. Moreover, in vitro results showed that CeO2@PP with PDA promotes LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages into M2-type polarization. In addition, in vitro and in vivo results showed that CeO2@PP have great biocompatibility and biosafety. Animal experiments have shown that CeO2@PP have excellent anti-inflammatory effects against DSS-induced colitis and effectively alleviated intestinal mucosal injury. Conclusion: The nanoplatform CeO2@PP possessed excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties for scavenging ROS and modulating macrophage polarization, which is beneficial for efficient colitis therapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the role of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in post stroke anxiety (PSA) in noncardiogenic ischemic stroke patients. METHODS: 180 patients with noncardiogenic ischemic stroke were consecutively enrolled from January 2019 to December 2019. All patients underwent polysomnography (PSG) to assess for OSA. OSA severity was identified based on the apnea hypopnea index (AHI), i.e., no OSA (AHI <5), mild OSA (5 = AHI <15), and moderate to severe OSA (AHI ≥15). Neuropsychological assessments were performed at acute phase and 6 months later to evaluate anxiety (Chinese version of the Zung self-rating anxiety scale [SAS], and Beck Anxiety Inventory [BAI]), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9, [PHQ-9]), and cognition (Mini-mental state examination, [MMSE], and Montreal Cognitive Assessment, [MOCA]). Clinical diagnoses of PSA were made based on interviews and the anxiety scales. The correlations between PSA and OSA were investigated in Logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of acute-phase and 6-month PSA were 27 (15%) and 52 (28.9%) respectively. Moderate to severe OSA and post-stroke depression (PSD) were the influencing factors of acute-phase PSA. 6-Month PSA was not associated with OSA but was associated with acute-phase anxiety, education status and MOCA. Logistic regression analysis including respiratory and sleeping parameters showed that AHI and micro-arousal index contributed to acute-phase PSA. CONCLUSIONS: Acute-phase PSA was associated with OSA severity, potentially through OSA-caused sleep discontinuity. While 6-month PSA was associated with acute-phase anxiety, highlighting the need for integration of screening for and management of OSA and PSA at acute phase.

RESUMO

With the widespread prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens, traditional antibiotics have limited effectiveness and do not yield the desired outcomes. Recently, alternative antibacterial therapies based on ultrasound (US) have been explored to overcome the crisis of bacterial pathogens. Antimicrobial sonodynamic therapy (aSDT) offers an excellent solution that relies on US irradiation to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and achieve antibiotic-free mediated antimicrobial effects. In addition, aSDT possesses the advantage of superior tissue penetrability of US compared to light irradiation, demonstrating great feasibility in treating deep infections. Although existing conventional sonosensitizers can produce ROS for antimicrobial activity, some limitations, such as low penetration rate, nonspecific distribution and poor ROS production under hypoxic conditions, result in suboptimal sterilization in aSDT. Recently, emerging nanosonosensitizers have enormous advantages as high-performance agents in aSDT, which overcome the deficiencies of conventional sonosensitizers as described above. Thus, nanosonosensitizer-mediated aSDT has a bright future for the management of bacterial infections. This review classifies the current available nanosonosensitizers and provides an overview of the mechanisms, biomedical applications, recent advances and perspectives of aSDT.

RESUMO

Introduction: The health issues that afflict middle-aged people and older individuals are a significant factor that affects their quality of life. It is crucial to investigate the impact of health shocks on the subjective wellbeing of this demographic and the mechanisms that underlie this impact to promote healthy aging. Methods: This study utilized data from the China Family Panel Study in 2018 and 2020 to analyze the effects of HSs and their categories on the subjective wellbeing of middle-aged people and older individuals using the propensity score matching difference-in-differences method. Additionally, the study explored the mediating role of social participation. Results: The findings indicate that health shocks, both chronic and acute, diminish the subjective wellbeing of middle-aged people and older adults. Furthermore, these shocks have a more significant negative effect on the subjective wellbeing of individuals aged 60 and above, women in the middle-aged and older demographic, individuals in rural areas who belong to the middle-aged and older age groups, and individuals possessing activities of daily living. The mechanism analysis revealed that health shocks, both chronic and acute, reduce the subjective wellbeing of middle-aged people and older individuals by disrupting partnerships. Discussion: Lowering the possibility of health shocks, the government should build a strong health management system and improve the health insurance system to enable timely treatment for persons suffering from health shocks. Individuals and families should live healthy lives and engage in social activities to avoid health shocks and improve subjective wellbeing.

RESUMO

Purpose: This study investigated the associations of peripheral iron status with different manifestations of restless legs syndrome (RLS), including leg movements (LMs) on polysomnography (PSG), disease severity, and impact on patients. Patients and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 108 patients with RLS were enrolled at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital's Center for Sleep Medicine. Demographic information, disease characteristics, RLS severity, and impact on patients were assessed through a semi-structured questionnaire. Peripheral iron indicators [serum ferritin, iron, and transferrin concentrations; unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC) and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC); transferrin saturation (TSAT)] were measured following PSG to assess sleep stages, respiratory events, microarousals and LM parameters. Data from patients with and without ferritin concentration < 50 µg/L were compared in crude analyses, and Spearman correlations of other iron indicators with RLS data were examined. An ordinal logistic regression model was used to adjust for age, sex, body mass index, years of education, age at the time of RLS onset, prior treatment (yes/no), C-reactive protein (CRP)/hemoglobin level, total sleep time and apnea-hypopnea index. Results: Multivariate analysis showed that periodic LMs during sleep (PLMS) and other LM parameters were significantly associated with a ferritin concentration < 50 µg/L, UIBC, TIBC, and serum transferrin concentration, but not serum iron or TSAT. By contrast, the severity and impact of RLS were not associated with a ferritin concentration < 50 µg/L or other peripheral iron indicators in the multivariate model. Conclusion: In this study, peripheral iron status was associated mainly with motor components (LMs on PSG) rather than sensory components (severity and impact of RLS) after adequately controlling for potential confounders, such as CRP and hemoglobin levels. Commonly used peripheral iron metabolism indicators may therefore not be ideal biomarkers of RLS severity or impact on patients.

RESUMO

Tonsillectomy is a common, minimally invasive, and relatively safe surgical operation. Although the surgical technology for such minor operations is mature and widely available in most countries worldwide, postoperative adverse complications occur and may be hazardous and fatal. Our article presents the details of a 4-year-old boy who suddenly developed pneumothorax and systemic extensive subcutaneous emphysema after tonsillectomy. He received professional treatment from a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and timely rescue in our hospital; however, he died tragically. To this end, there is an urgent need to raise clinicians' awareness of the potentially fatal and rare complications that can occur after tonsillectomy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive value of lung ultrasound score (LUS) combined with central venous oxygen saturation variations (ΔScvO2) in the outcome of ventilator weaning in patients after thoracic surgery. METHODS: The clinical data of 60 patients who received tracheal intubation ventilator-assisted breathing after thoracic surgery were retrospectively analyzed, and they were divided into successful (n = 35) and failed (n = 25) groups according to the postoperative weaning outcomes. The factors influencing the failure of weaning in patients after thoracic surgery were compared and analyzed, and the values of LUS, ΔScvO2 as well as the combination of both were calculated to predict the failure of weaning in patients after thoracic surgery. RESULTS: The results of logistic regression analysis showed that LUS, ΔScvO2, and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) may be risk factors influencing weaning failure in patients after thoracic surgery (OR = 1.844, 4.006, 1.271, P < 0.001 for all), while diaphragm thickening fraction (DTF) and partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) may be protective factors (OR = 0.852, 0.674, P = 0.002 for all). Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve showed that area under the curves (AUCs) of LUS, ΔScvO2, and the combination of the two was 0.865 (95% CI: 0.766-0.964), 0.874 (95% CI: 0.781-0.967), and 0.925 (95% CI: 0.860-0.990), respectively, in predicting failure of weaning in patients after thoracic surgery. CONCLUSION: LUS and ΔScvO2 were closely related to chest ultrasound index and arterial blood gas index in patients after thoracic surgery, both of which may be risk factors for weaning failure in patients after thoracic surgery, and their combination can effectively predict the occurrence of weaning failure.

RESUMO

Narcolepsy is the most common cause of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) following obstructive sleep apnea. Its treatment aims to reduce EDS and cataplexy, improve nighttime sleep disturbance, sleep paralysis and sleep-related hallucinations. Pitolisant (a histamine H3 receptor antagonist) and solriamfetol (a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) have recently been approved effective for narcolepsy in the United States and the European Union. Pitolisant has proved to be effective for both EDS and cataplexy. Besides being effective on EDS, solriamfetol seems to have advantages in abuse potential and withdrawal syndrome. As potential treatments for EDS and cataplexy associated with narcolepsy, several new drugs are being developed and tested. These new drugs include new hydroxybutyrate preparations (controlled release sodium hydroxybutyrate FT218, low sodium hydroxybutyrate JZP-258), selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (AXS-12), and modafinil combined with astroglial junction protein inhibitor (THN102). This paper reviews the recently approved drugs and potential treatments for narcolepsy.

RESUMO

Herein, we construct a new series of N-heterocyclic ligand bipyridine-based porous hybrid polymers (denoted Bpy-PHPs) from the Heck reaction of a rigid building unit octavinylsilsesquioxane (VPOSS) and 5,5'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine. Surprisingly, the typical sample Bpy-PHP-4 was found to be a metal-/halogen-free heterogeneous catalyst in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with a few epoxides under atmospheric pressure. After coordination with ZnBr2, the resultant ZnBr2@Bpy-PHP-4 afforded largely enhanced heterogeneous catalytic activities upon the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and various epoxides into cyclic carbonates without using any co-catalysts under mild conditions. The moderate catalytic activities of Bpy-PHP-4 may be due to the presence of hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), i.e., polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-derived Si-OH groups and N active sites from Bpy linkers. In comparison, the high catalytic efficiency of ZnBr2@Bpy-PHP-4 should be attributed to the synergistic catalysis of Si-OH groups, N active atoms, and Bpy-coordinated ZnBr2. Moreover, the catalyst ZnBr2@Bpy-PHP-4 can be easily recovered and reused ten times without any significant loss of catalytic activities. This work affords an efficient metal-based porous hybrid polymer heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides under mild and co-catalyst-free conditions.

RESUMO

SYNOPSIS: Both optimal stereoacuity and integration time to achieve that are impaired in patients with intermittent exotropia. The deterioration of stereoacuity is more revealing since it correlates well with exotropia control score. BACKGROUND: Despite the periodic misalignment of two eyes, some intermittent exotropia (IXT) patients exhibit normal stereoacuity, particularly when evaluated with static tests. It is not clear if the temporal integration process of stereopsis is altered in IXT patients, thus warranting further research. METHODS: IXT patients (n = 29) and age-matched normal controls (n = 36) were recruited. Static stereopsis was measured with the Titmus stereoacuity test. In computer-generated random dots tests, stereoacuity was measured with a stimuli presentation duration varying from 100 to 1,200 ms. And the relationship between stereoacuity and stimuli duration was fitted into a quadratic model. Optimal stereoacuity was achieved when fitted curve flattened and the critical integration time was the duration needed to achieve optimal stereoacuity. RESULTS: IXT patients were not found to differ significantly from control subjects under the Titmus test, while the Random Dots stereotest showed significantly worse optimal stereoacuity and significantly longer critical integration time. Multiple regression analysis showed that age (R = -4.83; P = 0.04) had statistically significant negative correlation on the critical integration time, age (R = -6.45; P = 0.047) and exotropia control scores (R = 60.71; P = 0.007) had statistically significant effects on optimal stereoacuity. CONCLUSION: The temporal integration for stereopsis is impaired in IXT patients, requiring longer critical integration time to achieve elevated optimal stereoacuity.
