RESUMO

Solanum lyratum Thunb., a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has a promising background. However, the anti-inflammatory effects of its component steroid alkaloid have not been explored. In this study, animal and cell experiments were performed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanism of action of Solanum lyratum Thunb steroid alkaloid (SLTSA), in order to provide evidence for its potential utilization. SLTSA effectively inhibited ear swelling and acute abdominal inflammation of mice. We observed concentration-dependent inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines by SLTSA, as confirmed by the ELISA and RT-qPCR results. Flow cytometry, immunofluorescence and RT-qPCR analyses revealed that SLTSA suppressed TLR4 expression. Western blot results indicated that SLTSA inhibited the activation of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway. Our study demonstrated that SLTSA possesses anti-inflammatory properties.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to investigate the efficacy of different doses of levothyroxine therapy among pregnant women exhibiting high-normal thyroid stimulating hormone levels and positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies throughout the first half of pregnancy. METHODS: Pregnant women exhibiting high-normal thyroid stimulating hormone levels and thyroid peroxidase antibodies positivity throughout the initial half of pregnancy were selected from January 2021 to September 2023. Based on the different doses of levothyroxine, the pregnant women were categorized into the nonintervention group (G0, 122 women), 25 µg levothyroxine intervention group (G25, 69 women), and 50 µg levothyroxine intervention group (G50, 58 women). Serum parameters, gastrointestinal symptoms, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared after the intervention among the three groups. RESULTS: After the intervention, in the G25 and G50 groups, the thyroid stimulating hormone, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein levels were notably less in contrast to those in the G0 group (P < 0.05). The rates of abdominal distension and SIBO in the G25 and G50 groups were notably lower in contrast to the G0 group (P = 0.043 and 0.040, respectively). The G50 group had a lower rate of spontaneous abortion and premature membrane rupture than the G0 group (P = 0.01 and 0.015, respectively). Before 11+ 2 weeks of gestation and at thyroid peroxidase antibodies levels ≥ 117 IU/mL, in contrast to the G0 group, the G50 group experienced a decreased rate of spontaneous abortion (P = 0.008). The G50 group had significantly higher newborn weight than the G0 group (P = 0.014), as well as a notably longer newborn length than the G0 and G25 groups (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: For pregnant women with high-normal thyroid stimulating hormone levels and thyroid peroxidase antibodies positive during the first half of pregnancy, supplementation with 50 µg levothyroxine was more effective in improving their blood lipid status and gastrointestinal symptoms, reducing the incidence of SIBO and premature rupture of membranes, and before 11+2 weeks, TPOAb ≥ 117 IU/mL proved more beneficial in mitigating the risk of spontaneous abortion.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between hypothyroidism in early pregnancy and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and the effect of probiotics. Patients with hypothyroidism in early pregnancy and normal pregnant women during the same period were included in the methane-hydrogen breath test to compare the incidence of SIBO, smoothed curve fit, and differences in clinical symptoms. For those who combined with SIBO, the rate of clinical symptom conversion, thyroid hormones, and changes in associated inflammatory indexes were compared after 21 days of treatment with probiotics on top of conventional levothyroxine sodium tablets. The results are as follows: (1) The incidence of combined SIBO in patients with hypothyroidism in pregnancy was 56.0%, significantly higher than the 28.0% of normal pregnant women during the same period. (2) The highest value of hydrogen plus methane gas in 90 min in pregnancy hypothyroid patients showed a significant negative correlation with FT4 (p < .001, SD = 0.169). (3) Abdominal distension symptoms were significantly increased in both groups after combined SIBO (p = .036, p = .025), and the conversion rate after treatment was 69.2% and 75.0%, respectively. (4) In hypothyroidism, pregnancy combined with SIBO, TSH, and CRP was higher before treatment (p = .001, p = .012) and decreased significantly after treatment (p = .001, p = .008). Hypothyroidism in early pregnancy is associated with SIBO, and probiotic treatment is significantly effective.

Evaluating efficacy of probiotics combined with prebiotics in small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) in the second trimester. We collected data from 78 pregnant women with SCH (SCH group) and 74 normal pregnant women (control group) in second trimester, compare the differences in high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), result of lactulose methane-hydrogen breath test and gastrointestinal symptoms assessed by GSRS scale between two groups. In SCH group, 32 patients with SIBO were selected as intervention group. Treatment with probiotics + prebiotics for 21 days; The differences of lipid metabolism, hsCRP, thyroid function level, methane-hydrogen breath test results and GSRS scores before and after treatment were compared to evaluate the therapeutic effect. (1) The positive rate of SIBO and methane, hsCRP levels in SCH group were higher than those in control group (P < 0.05), the total score of GSRS scale, mean score of indigestion syndrome, and constipation syndrome in SCH group were higher (P < 0.05). (2) The mean abundance of hydrogen and methane were higher in SCH group. (3) After treatment, serum levels of thyrotropin(TSH), total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and hsCRP in intervention group were decreased, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was increased compared with before treatment (P < 0.05). (4) After treatment, methane positive rate, total score of GSRS scale, mean score of diarrhea syndrome, dyspepsia syndrome, and constipation syndrome were decreased (P < 0.05). (5) The average abundance of methane and hydrogen were lower. Probiotics combined with prebiotics are effective in the treatment of SIBO in pregnant SCH patients.Clinical Trial Registration Number: ChiCTR1900026326.

BACKGROUND: Acquired symmastia is a rare complication after breast augmentation that is difficult to fix. METHODS: The medical records of 18 female patients with symmastia treated by our team were reviewed. Data collected included preoperative medical history, implant size, and breast base width. Surgical techniques were systematically reviewed and analyzed based on postoperative follow-up results. RESULTS: Of the 18 patients, 15 patients had undergone implanted breast augmentation and 3 had injected breast augmentation. All 18 patients underwent comprehensive repair with various surgical techniques. Three patients showed recurrence after operation. Four patients were dissatisfied with postoperative breast size and underwent 2-stage replacement surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Symmastia is an intractable surgical complication. Surgical classification can help assess the difficulty of surgery in advance, and the surgical strategy plan can help the surgeon to control the quality of the repair surgery.

BACKGROUND: Qizha Shuangye granules (QSG) comprise six traditional Chinese herbal medicines (TCHMs), which have a long history of treating hyperlipidemia (HLP) in China. This study aimed to evaluate the potential lipid-lowering effects of QSG in an HLP rat model and investigate possible mechanisms. The HLP rat model was induced by a high-fat diet. Lipid-related indicators in serum were detected. Serum and liver metabolites were investigated using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approach. A herb-compound-target-metabolite (H-C-T-M) network was further constructed to reveal the possible molecular mechanism of QSG to alleviate HLP. RESULTS: The administration of QSG inhibited the HLP-induced changes in total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) levels. Additionally, QSG significantly attenuated the liver histopathological changes induced by HLP. Metabolomic analysis showed the serum and liver metabolic disorders presented in HLP rats. QSG can reverse the abnormal metabolism caused by HLP. Through network pharmacology analysis, key proteins such as androgen receptor, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α were screened out, and they were speculated to be possible therapeutic targets for QSG to treat HLP. CONCLUSION: The present study integrated metabolomics and network pharmacology analysis to reveal the efficacy and possible mechanism of QSG in treating HLP, which provides a new reference for the research and development of QSG as a functional food. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

In this study, the gas sensing properties of formaldehyde (HCHO) and benzene (C6H6) adsorbed on two-dimensional (2D) pristine GeSe and Pd-decorated GeSe (Pd-GeSe) monolayers are studied by using first-principles calculations. The adsorption energies, electronic properties, optical properties, sensitivity, and recovery time of the gas adsorption systems have been thoroughly investigated. It is found that the adsorption of C6H6 on two substrate surfaces and the adsorption of HCHO on pristine GeSe are examples of physical adsorption. However, after HCHO adsorption on the Pd-GeSe monolayer, the adsorption system exhibits an increased adsorption energy of -1.21 eV, which is more favorable compared with the other adsorption systems studied. Moreover, the electron localization function and charge transfer from Pd-GeSe to HCHO are significantly enhanced, indicating distinct chemical adsorption behavior. Furthermore, it demonstrates a larger band gap change rate of 18.8% and a significant enhancement of optical absorption upon the adsorption of HCHO on the Pd-GeSe monolayer. Additionally, the appropriate sensitivity and moderate recovery time for the adsorption of HCHO on the Pd-GeSe surface indicate that the Pd-GeSe monolayer possesses an outstanding sensing capability for HCHO gas.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Shegan Mahuang Decoction (SMD) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula for asthma treatment, but the anti-asthma mechanism of SMD is still not fully studied. AIMS OF THE STUDY: In this study, we established an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma rat model and treated it with SMD to observe its anti-asthma effect and explore the related mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the anti-inflammatory effect of SMD via testing the levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-6 (IL-6) in serum and performing the hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining of lung tissue slices. We analyzed the variations of metabolites and proteins in the lung tissue of different groups using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based untargeted metabolomics and TMT-based proteomics approaches. The metabolic biomarkers and differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were picked, and the related signal transduction pathways were also investigated. In addition, the key proteins on the signaling pathway were validated through western blotting (WB) experiment to reveal the anti-asthma mechanism of SMD. RESULTS: The results showed that the SMD could significantly reduce the serum levels of IgE, CRP, IL-4, and IL-6 and attenuate the OVA-induced pathological changes in lung tissue. A total of 34 metabolic biomarkers and 84 DEPs were screened from rat lung tissue, which were mainly associated with lipid metabolism, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase activation, the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lysosome pathway. Besides, SMD could inhibit the myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/inhibitor of kappa B kinase (IKK)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway to exhibit anti-inflammatory activities. CONCLUSIONS: SMD exhibited a therapeutic effect on asthma, which possibly be exerted by inhibiting the MyD88/IKK/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Our previous studies confirmed the efficacy of gross saponins of Tribulus terrestris L. fruit in treating cerebral ischemia. This study aimed to investigate the related mechanisms in vitro. The lipopolysaccharide-induced BV2 cells model was constructed and treated with gross saponins at different concentrations to explore its anti-inflammatory activity. The cell metabolite changes were tracked by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics, and the metabolic biomarkers and related metabolic pathways were analyzed. Molecular biochemistry analysis was further used to verify the relevant inflammatory pathways. The results showed that the saponins reduced nitric oxide release and the secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1ß, and interleukin-6 from lipopolysaccharide-induced BV2 cells. Metabolic perturbations occurred in lipopolysaccharide-treated BV2 cells, which could be reversed by drug treatment via mainly regulating glycerophospholipid metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, purine metabolism pathways, etc. The western blot analysis demonstrated that saponin could suppress the activation of the inflammatory-related signaling pathway. The present study explored the in vitro anti-inflammatory mechanism of gross saponins of Tribulus terrestris L. fruit using an LC-MS-based cell metabolomics approach, which confirms the great potential of LC-MS for drug efficacy evaluation and can be applied in other herbal medicine-related analyses.

SCOPE: Among herbal dietary supplements, the extract of Tribulus terrestris L. (TT) has been used as a commercially registered product in multiple studies. The previous studies demonstrate the protective effect of gross saponins of TT (GSTTF) on ischemic stroke. However, the mechanism by which GSTTF protects against ischemic stroke is still unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study applies molecular biology and unbiased transcriptomics to explore the pathways and targets underlying the therapeutic impact of GSTTF in treating ischemic stroke. The mRNA of brain tissues from different groups is analyzed using a transcriptomics method. The data reveal that treatment with GSTTF significantly reduces elevated CRP, IL-6, and Ca2+ levels induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). A total of 61 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are identified, GSTTF is found to effectively reverse the abnormal mRNA expression levels in rat brain tissues affected by ischemic stroke models. These positive effects of GSTTF are likely achieved through the suppression of calcium ion and the MyD88/IKK/NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: This study uncovers the mechanisms behind the efficacy of GSTTF in treating ischemic stroke, which not only expands its potential medicinal applications but also confirmed its potential as a dietary supplement.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the suitable regimens of induced termination of second-trimester pregnancy in women with prior cesareans. METHODS: A total of 204 s-trimester pregnant women with prior cesareans at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2019 to December 2020 were included in this retrospective study. Group A included pregnant women who were administered mifepristone with misoprostol, Group B included those administering mifepristone with misoprostol as well as a transcervical Cook double-balloon catheter, Group C included those receiving mifepristone with an intra-amniotic injection of ethacridine lactate, and Group D included those receiving mifepristone, transcervical Cook double-balloon catheter, and intra-amniotic injection of ethacridine lactate. Their characteristics, clinical outcomes, and complications among the four groups were compared. RESULTS: All women had similar profiles in maternal age, gravidity, and previous cesarean delivery (p > .05). There was no significant difference in successful abortion among the four groups (p > .05). Group C had a significantly shorter induction-to-abortion interval than Group D (p < .01). The blood loss after abortion at 2 h in Group B was much less than Group A (p < .05). It made a significant difference between Group B and Group D regarding the blood loss after abortion at 2 h (p < .01). With regard to total incidences of adverse reactions, there were much fewer in the group B than the group A (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The four regimens are all effective for the termination of second-trimester pregnancy in women with prior cesareans. The use of transcervical Cook double-balloon could reduce the risks caused by misoprostol, and the combination of these is feasible to induce second-trimester pregnancy termination in women with prior cesareans.

In this paper, the structural stability, optoelectronic and magnetic properties of silicene and germanene monolayers Janus-functionalized simultaneously with hydrogen and alkali metal atoms (Li and Na) are investigated systematically by using first-principles calculations. The calculated results of theab initiomolecular dynamics simulations and cohesive energies indicate that all functionalized cases have good stability. Meanwhile, the calculated band structures show that all functionalized cases retain the Dirac cone. Particularly, the cases of HSiLi and HGeLi show metallic nature but retain semiconducting characteristics. Besides, the above two cases can present obvious magnetic behavior and their magnetic moments are mainly originated by the p states of Li atom. The metallic property and weak magnetic character can also be found in the case of HGeNa. While the case of HSiNa exhibits the nonmagnetic semiconducting property with a indirect band gap of 0.42 eV calculated by the HSE06 hybrid functional. It is also found that the optical absorption in the visible region of silicene and germanene can be effectively improved by Janus-functionalization. Specifically, a high optical absorption of visible light in an order of 4.5 × 105cm-1can be observed in the case of HSiNa. Furthermore, in the visible region, the reflection coefficients of all functionalized cases can also be enhanced. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the Janus-functionalization method to modulate the optoelectronic and magnetic properties of silicene and germanene, expanding their potential applications in the fields of spintronics and optoelectronics.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between intestinal microflora characteristics and the peripheral blood T helper cell (Th)1/Th2 balance in patients with hypothyroidism during the first half of pregnancy. Methods: The Th1/Th2 ratios in the peripheral blood of pregnant women in the hypothyroidism and control groups were determined using flow cytometry. The cytometric bead array assay was used to determine the serum levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon (IFN)-γ. Moreover, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was used to determine the intestinal microbial composition in the two groups. Finally, the relationships between intestinal microflora, Th1/Th2 cells, cytokines, and clinical indicators were analyzed. Results: C-reactive protein levels were higher in the hypothyroidism group than in the control group. In contrast to the control group, the hypothyroidism group showed an increase in Th1 cells and the Th1/Th2 ratio, and a decrease in Th2 cells. The hypothyroidism group had higher serum IL-2, TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels, and lower IL-10 levels, than the control group. The richness of the intestinal microflora in the hypothyroidism group increased whereas the diversity decreased. The linear discriminant analysis effect size revealed that the hypothyroidism group had a higher abundance of Prevotella and Faecalibacterium, but a lower abundance of Bacteroides, compared to the control group. Prevotella was positively correlated with Th1 cells, the Th1/2 ratio, and TNF-α. Bacteroides was positively correlated with Th2 cells and IL-10, but negatively correlated with Th1 cells, the Th1/2 ratio, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. The thyroid peroxidase antibody level was directly proportional to TNF-α. Conclusion: A Th1/Th2 imbalance occurs in patients with hypothyroidism during the first half of pregnancy. Disorders of the intestinal microflora may lead to hypothyroidism during pregnancy by affecting the Th1/Th2 balance.

Tribulus terrestris L. fruit (TT) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine used to treat ischemic stroke (IS). This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of TT extract, named TT15, on middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rats using metabolomics and molecular docking and find the targets of action and the material basis of TT15 against IS. The results of the infarct volume and neurological defect scores confirmed the efficacy of TT15. Serum metabolomics analysis using LC-MS revealed that model group animals experienced a variety of metabolic disturbances when compared to the sham group. TT15 can restore the MCAO-induced serum metabolite changes by modulating multiple metabolic pathways. Six enzymes were highlighted by the metabolite-reaction-enzyme-gene (M-R-E-G) network analysis, which might be the possible targets for the TT15 against IS. Molecular docking analysis was applied to show the binding affinities between active compounds and these enzymes. The representative docking mode with the lowest binding energy between three compounds and phospholipase A 2 (PLA2) and peroxidase (POD) was displayed by the ribbon binding map. This study profiles the metabolic changes in MCAO-induced IS and investigates the efficacy and the corresponding mechanism of TT15 in the treatment of IS.

The extract of Tribulus terrestris (TT) has been used as a component of several nutritional supplements for enhancing human vitality. However, its protective effect on ischemic stroke has yet to be fully investigated. In this study, the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat model was established and treated with gross saponin of TT fruit (GSTTF) by gavage to explore its anti-ischemic stroke efficacy. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics was applied to profile the brain tissue metabolite changes and further obtain the metabolic pathways that were greatly involved in the efficacy of GSTTF. Subsequent molecular biology experiments were applied to validate the findings from metabolomics analysis. The results showed that GSTTF administration remarkably decreased the infarction volume of brain tissue and improved the neurobehavioral scores of MCAO rats. Metabolomics analysis revealed that pathways, including glycerophospholipid metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, and arachidonic acid metabolism, were considered associated with the protective effect of GSTTF against MCAO, which were greatly involved in the inflammatory responses. The results of the biochemistry analysis showed that GSTTF treatment significantly reduced the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in brain tissue after MCAO. The anti-inflammatory mechanism of GSTTF was further investigated, which revealed that GSTTF could inhibit the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway to exert protective effects on MCAO. This study provides the underlying anti-inflammatory mechanism of GSTTF for ischemic stroke protection, which has important implications for the development of GSTTF-related functional foods or food supplements.

BACKGROUND: The reference intervals (RIs) of laboratory tests are essential for disease diagnosis, therapy monitoring, and health assessment. They are also significant for clinicians to discriminate between subjects with disease and healthy subjects. However, RIs for complete blood count (CBC) parameters in capillary blood for children are deficient. This study aimed to establish capillary blood RIs for blood cell parameters in neonates and infants from birth to 2 years of age in Zhengzhou. METHODS: We prospectively collected a total of 1840 capillary blood specimens from healthy subjects from birth to 2 years of age. Hematology RIs were established by analyzing capillary blood sample data, and RIs and 90 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) C28-A3 guidelines. RESULTS: RIs were established for hematological parameters of capillary blood in neonates and infants from birth to 2 years of age. The levels of almost all hematological parameters, except for the lymphocyte (LYMPH), platelet (PLT), and thrombocytocrit (PCT) parameters, peaked in the first month after birth and then decreased to lower levels within 6 months. There were significant sex differences in most erythrocyte-related parameters, with higher levels in males than in females. Erythrocyte-related parameters showed an increasing tendency with increasing age after the second month. Neutrophil (NEUT) levels were high on the third day of life, declined to a nadir in the first month, and then slowly increased with age. LYMPH levels were low at birth and began to increase after birth, peaked at approximately-six months of age and then gradually declined with age. PLT and PCT levels showed an increasing trend during the first month, while the other parameters showed a decreasing trend. All platelet-related and leukocyte-related parameters showed no significant difference with sex. CONCLUSION: We provide comprehensive age- and sex-specific RIs, including RIs for neonates in Henan. Our study provides more comprehensive reference ranges for Child Health Hospital and children's medical institutions, which may facilitate preliminary screening, diagnosis, and therapy.

Objective: To explore the effect of probiotics combined with prebiotics on clinical hypothyroidism during pregnancy combined with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Methods: (1) In total, 441 pregnant women were included in this study. A total of 231 patients with clinical hypothyroidism during the second trimester of pregnancy and 210 normal pregnant women were enrolled in the lactulose methane-hydrogen breath test. The positive rate of intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), gastrointestinal symptoms, thyroid function and inflammatory factors were compared between the two groups by chi-square test and two independent sample t-test. (2) SIBO-positive patients in the clinical hypothyroidism group during pregnancy (n=112) were treated with probiotics combined with prebiotics based on conventional levothyroxine sodium tablets treatment. The changes in the methane-hydrogen breath test, gastrointestinal symptoms, thyroid function and inflammatory factors were compared before treatment (G0) and 21 days after treatment (G21) by chi-square test and paired sample t test. Results: (1) The positive rates of SIBO in pregnant women in the clinical hypothyroidism group and control group were 48.5% and 24.8%, respectively. (2) The incidence of abdominal distention and constipation in the clinical hypothyroidism group was significantly higher than that in the control group, and the risk of abdominal distention and constipation in SIBO-positive pregnant women was higher than that in SIBO-negative pregnant women. (3) The serum levels of hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), IL-10, IL-6, TNF-α, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), free fatty acids (FFAs) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) in the hypothyroidism group during pregnancy were higher than those in the control group. (4) After 21 days of probiotics combined with prebiotics, the incidence of pure methane positivity in the methane-hydrogen breath test in the G21 group was significantly reduced, and the average abundance of hydrogen and methane at each time point in the G21 group was lower than that in the G0 group. (5) The incidence of constipation in the G21 group was significantly lower than before treatment. (6) The levels of serum TSH, hsCRP, IL-6, TNF-α, TC and LDL in pregnant women after probiotics combined with prebiotics were lower than those before treatment. Conclusion: Probiotics combined with prebiotics are effective in the treatment of pregnant patients with clinical hypothyroidism complicated with SIBO, providing a new idea to treat pregnant patients with clinical hypothyroidism complicated with SIBO.

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula Shegan Mahuang Decoction (SMD) has been used for treating asthma with significant clinical efficacy, but its mechanism of action has not been well investigated. This study aimed to investigate the anti-asthma effects of SMD on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in rats and its potential mechanisms using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics combined with Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) data mining. The results showed that the administration of SMD significantly attenuated OVA-induced lung histopathological changes. OVA-induced elevation of the immunoglobulin (IgE) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels was also inhibited by SMD. A total of 28 significantly changed metabolites in plasma were selected from metabolomics analysis. After treatment with SMD, 24 of them were negatively regulated and the related metabolisms were involved in multiple metabolic pathways such as sphingolipid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained by GEO data mining. The integrated pathway analysis highlighted 11 signaling pathways that were associated with the anti-asthma effect of SMD. Among them, the metabolite-gene-pathway network showed that the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) signaling pathway might be the most significant one. This study revealed that SMD exerted an anti-asthma effect against OVA-induced AHR via comprehensively modulating the sphingolipid metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, and PPAR signaling, which indicated the synergistic effect of multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway of TCM in the treatment of the disease. This study expands our understanding of SMD in the treatment of asthma from a metabolomics perspective.

The oxygen-deficient bismuth oxide, Bi2O4, synthesized by a typical hydrothermal method using commercial NaBiO3·2H2O as a raw material only has a relatively low concentration of surface oxygen vacancies (OVs). How to improve the visible light photocatalytic performance of Bi2O4 via tuning its surface OV concentration is still a huge challenge. In this study, improving the surface OVs of Bi2O4 was successfully realized through the pretreatment of commercial NaBiO3·2H2O, including thermal treatment in air and hydrothermal treatment in 10 M NaOH solution, forming NaBiO3·xH2O intermediate products first, and then hydrothermal preparation of Bi2O4 target products using NaBiO3·xH2O instead of commercial NaBiO3·2H2O as the precursor. The enhanced surface OV content not only narrows the band gap of Bi2O4 and thus extends its optical response range but also captures more photoexcited electrons and thus increases the charge carriers' separation efficiency and prolongs the charge carriers' lifetime of Bi2O4. Among the above-mentioned two pretreatment methods, the effects of the hydrothermal pretreatment are superior to those of the thermal treatment, involving the increase of surface OVs, the optical harvesting capacity, and the charge carriers' separation efficiency. Accordingly, Bi2O4 prepared by the hydrothermal pretreatment route exhibits the optimal visible light catalytic performance toward the removal of methyl orange (MO) and phenol due to its most abundant surface OV concentration, which is 2.59 times and 4.26 times higher than that of Bi2O4 synthesized directly by the commercial NaBiO3·2H2O route, respectively. Holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (•O2-) are identified as the main active species, while singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are verified as the second and third important active species for organic pollutant removal, respectively. This work has developed a novel strategy to promote the catalytic performance of single Bi2O4 induced by the enhanced surface OV concentration through the pretreatment of the precursor, commercial NaBiO3·2H2O.

Co3O4 is a P-type metal-oxide semiconductor which can realize acetone detection at a lower temperature, but the lower working temperature brings the enhanced humidity effect. In order to solve the problem of a Co3O4 gas sensor being easily affected by humidity, an acetone-sensing material of Co3O4 mixed with Pr/Zn was prepared by electrospray in this work. The optimal working temperature of Pr/Zn-Co3O4 is 160 °C, and the detection limit can reach 1 ppm. The fluctuation of the acetone response is about 7.7% in the relative humidity range of 30-90%. Compared with pure Co3O4, the anti-humidity property of this material is obviously enhanced, but the gas-sensing response deteriorates. Compared with Pr-Co3O4, the anti-humidity and acetone sensing properties of Pr/Zn-Co3O4 were both improved. The morphology, composition, crystal state and energy state of the material were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD and XPS. The material of Pr/Zn-Co3O4 is a multi-component mixed material composed of PrCoO3, ZnO, Pr6O11 and Co3O4. The improved anti-humidity and acetone sensing properties exhibited by this material are the result of the synergistic effect of ZnO and Pr3+.
