RESUMO

The present work reports the rapid sweat detection inside a PPE kit using a flexible humidity sensor based on hydrothermally synthesized ZnO (zinc oxide) nanoflowers (ZNFs). Physical characterization of ZNFs was done using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-visible, particle size analysis, Raman analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and the hydrophilicity was investigated by using contact angle measurement. Fabrication of a flexible sensor was done by deposition on the paper substrate using the spin coating technique. It exhibited high sensitivity and low response and recovery times in the humidity range 10-95%RH. The sensor demonstrated the highest sensitivity of 296.70 nF/%RH within the humidity range 55-95%RH, and the rapid response and recovery times were also calculated and found as 5.10/1.70 s, respectively. The selectivity of the proposed sensor was also analyzed, and it is highly sensitive to humidity. The humidity sensing characteristics were theoretically witnessed in terms of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and electronic properties of sensing materials in ambient and humid conditions. These theoretical results are evidence of the interaction of ZnO with humidity. Overall, the present study provides a scope of architecture-enabled paper-based humidity sensors for the detection of sweat levels inside PPE kits for health workers.

The need for photosensors and gas sensors arises from their pivotal roles in various technological applications, ensuring enhanced efficiency, safety, and functionality in diverse fields. In this paper, interlinked PbS/Sb2O5thin film has been synthesized by a magnetron sputtering method. We control the temperature to form the nanocomposite by using their different nucleation temperature during the sulfonation process. A nanostructured PbS/Sb2O5with cross-linked morphology was synthesized by using this fast and efficient method. This method has also been used to grow a uniform thin film of nanocomposite. The photo-sensing and gas-sensing properties related to the PbS/Sb2O5compared with those of other nanomaterials have also been investigated. The experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the PbS/Sb2O5exhibits extraordinarily superior photo-sensing and gas-sensing properties in terms of providing a pathway for electron transport to the electrode. The attractive highly sensitive photo and gas sensing properties of PbS/Sb2O5make them applicable for many different kinds of applications. The responsivity and detectivity of PbS/Sb2O5are 0.28 S/mWcm-2and 1.68 × 1011Jones respectively. The sensor response towards NO2gas was found to be 0.98 at 10 ppb with an limit of detection (LOD) of 0.083 ppb. The PbS/Sb2O5exhibits high selectivity towards the NO2gas. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) were used to analyze the geometries, electronic structure, and electronic absorption spectra of a light sensor fabricated by PbS/Sb2O5. The results are very analogous to the experimental results. Both photosensors and gas sensors are indispensable tools that contribute significantly to the evolution of technology and the improvement of various aspects of modern life.

In this study, an enhanced photoresponse was observed in the Mn-Co Nanoferrites (MCFs)-Polyaniline (PANI) nanohybrid architecture due to the formation of interface between PANI and MCFs, which provided a conduction pathway for the movement of charge carriers, and these interfaces were observed in a high-resolution transmission electron micrograph (HR-TEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests that the carbon (C 1s) of the MCF-PANI nanohybrid shows peaks at 287.80 eV for CO, 286.17 eV for C-O, 285.24 eV for C-N, 284.50 eV for the sp3 hybridized carbon (C-C/C-H) and 283.84 eV for the sp2 hybridized carbon (CC). Current-voltage (I-V) curves reveal an ohmic nature of the MCF-PANI nanohybrid photodetector device. The photoresponse measurements were analyzed using the trap depth concept, demonstrating that the conductive polymer increases the photoconduction mechanism efficiency of MCFs. The constructed photodetector device exhibits a high photoresponsivity of 22.69 A W-1, a remarkable detectivity of 1.36 × 1012 cm Hz1/2 W-1 and a fast rise/decay time of 0.7/0.8 s. The excellent performance of the as-fabricated photodetector device could be explained by the intimate interaction between MCFs and PANI at their interface.

A nano-enabled low-trace monitoring system for acetone has the potential to revolutionize breath omics-based non-invasive diagnosis of human diabetes and environmental monitoring technologies. This unprecedented study presents the state-of-the-art facile and economic template-assisted hydrothermal route to fabricate novel CuMoO4 nanorods for room temperature breath and airborne acetone detection. Physicochemical attribute analysis reveals the formation of crystalline CuMoO4 nanorods with diameters ranging from 90 to 150 nm, and an optical band gap of approximately 3.87 eV. CuMoO4 nanorods-based chemiresistor demonstrates excellent acetone monitoring performance, with a sensitivity of approximately 33.85 at a concentration of 125 ppm. Acetone detection is rapid, with a response time of 23 s and fast recovery within 31 s. Furthermore, the chemiresistor exhibits long-term stability and selectivity towards acetone, compared to other interfering volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly found in human breath such as ethanol, propanol, formaldehyde, humidity, and ammonia. The linear detection range of acetone from 25 to 125 ppm achieved by the fabricated sensor is well-suited for human breath-based diagnosis of diabetes. This work represents a significant advancement in the field, as it offers a promising alternative to time-consuming and costly invasive biomedical diagnostics, with the potential for application in cleanroom facilities for indoor contamination monitoring. The utilization of CuMoO4 nanorods as sensing nanoplatform opens new possibilities for the development of nano-enabled, low-trace acetone monitoring technologies for non-invasive diabetes diagnosis and environmental sensing applications.

Background: Heterakidosis is one of the most prevalent parasitic diseases in birds, the caecae of a variety of wild and domestic birds are infected with these nematodes. In pheasants, nodular typhlitis is a lethal disease caused mainly by infection with Heterakis isolonche alone or in conjunction with Heterakis gallinarum. H. gallinarum has long been recognized to infect birds with low pathogenicity, with only a few fatal cases previously reported. Case description: This paper describes a case of fatal nodular typhlitis due to H. gallinarum in a male and female pair of adult golden pheasants (Chrysolophus pictus) from a zoological garden in Uttar Pradesh, India. Findings/treatment and outcome: The caecum had multiple serosal and mucosal nodules, the majority of which were found to contain various stages of parasites embedded in the center along with the free forms in the caecal contents. Histopathologically, these nodules were generally represented by granulomas centered on necrotic parasite debris, with the occasional reactive fibrous hyperplastic tissue reaction. Based on the morphology and nematode-specific internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ITS1-5.8 rRNA-ITS2 region-based PCR, the nematode was identified as H. gallinarum. The presence of H. gallinarum was further confirmed by sequencing the ITS region followed by phylogenetic analysis. According to the author's best knowledge, this is the first instance of H. gallinarum being linked to nodular typhlitis in pheasants in India. Conclusion: Our findings confirm that H. gallinarum, other than H. isolonche, can induce severe nodular typhlitis with a fatal outcome in pheasants.

Methotrexate (MTX) is the commonly preferred drug in the treatment of various chronic inflammatory conditions. An uncommon, life-threatening, and fatal event associated with methotrexate use is methotrexate-induced pneumonitis (M-pneu). M-pneu does not correlate with the dosage, duration, or method of administration. We present a case of M-pneu in a diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis patient after six years of initiation of MTX. Prompt recognition, withdrawal, and supportive therapy have a positive outcome. If untreated, M-pneu has a proven fatality of 17-30% in published cases.

In the present study, principal component analysis (PCA) is used to investigate the processes controlling groundwater salinity in the Mewat (Nuh) district, Haryana, India. Twenty groundwater samples were collected from salinity-affected areas in the March-April months of years 2018 and 2019 and were analyzed for chemical variables pH, EC, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, [Formula: see text], Cl-, SO42-, [Formula: see text], TDS, and total hardness. Three principal components were selected based on the eigen value, which explains 79.58% and 85.08% of the total variation in the years 2018 and 2019, respectively. The first principal component (PC-1) is identified with salinity, the second principal component (PC-2) with alkalinity, and the third principal component (PC-3) described the pollution. When the yearly comparison was made, the samples collected in 2019 were found to have an increased salinity compared to 2018, which shows an increased vulnerability to the aquifer of Mewat on account of the decline in rainfall recharge. It was also evident that declining recharge also triggered the recharge from other sources; thus, the impact of pollution is more pronounced in 2019 compared to 2018.

Variation in the transmitted light intensity from metal oxide thin films with moisture content provides a great opportunity to use them for humidity sensing. Herein, we have developed a novel and simple humidity sensor based on ZnO nanorod (ZNR) thin films which work as transmission-based sensing elements in an in-house fabricated sensing setup. The ZNR sensing element shows excellent linear sensing performance in the relative humidity (RH) range 10-90% and does not show any hysteresis. A maximum change in optical power of ∼95 µW is observed with the change in RH in the range 10-90%, for the sample with the smallest crystallite size (ZNR1) and highest pore diameter of the ZNR film. Also, a maximum sensitivity of 1.104 µW/% RH is observed for the ZNR1 sample which drops to 0.604 µW/% RH for the highest crystallite size sample (ZNR4). The presence of oxygen vacancies and the micro-porous nature of the film allow the absorption of water vapour on the film which deflects light at different angles that vary with the moisture content. The experimental results suggest that the ZNR film with a smaller crystallite size and larger pore diameter is more sensitive for humidity measurements. Further, an improved sensing performance is perceived in ZNRs because of the larger surface area of the nanorods. The ZNR based sensing elements do not suffer from ageing effects and exhibit high repeatability (88.74%). Further, the humidity sensor has a response time of 62 seconds and recovery time of 100 seconds which can be considered as a fairly quick response.

Nickel-zinc iron oxide (NZF) was introduced into a polyaniline (PANI) matrix by an in situ chemical oxidation polymerization approach. The surface composition and chemical states were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which revealed an Fe 2p spectrum with the two peak positions of Fe 2p3/2 and Fe 2p1/2 at 711.00 and 724.48 eV, respectively. Deconvolution of the Fe 2p3/2 peak revealed two components with binding energies of 713.98 and 718.16 eV, corresponding to the presence of Fe cations in the octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Additionally, the Rietveld refinement of NZF showed a cubic system with the Fd3m space group. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis showed that the NZF material strongly interacts with polyaniline, while the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern perfectly matched with the XRD data. Lognormal distribution was used to determine the particle size, which was found to be in the range of 1-100 nm. A flexible photodetector device utilizing the NZF-PANI nanohybrid was fabricated on an environmentally friendly, biodegradable cellulose paper substrate and the device exhibited excellent performance, i.e., a responsivity of 0.069 A W-1 and detectivity of 7.258 × 1010 Jones at a very low voltage of 0.1 V. The non-stretched device showed a responsivity of 24.980 A W-1 at 5 V, whereas at 2 cm-1 bending curvature, the device showed a responsivity of 20.175 A W-1, which was much higher than the responsivity of a commercial photodetector (<0.5 A W-1).

OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors affecting mortality in acute invasive fungal sinusitis. METHOD: This observational cohort study was conducted over a five-year period. RESULTS: Of 109 recruited patients, 90 (82.6 per cent) had diabetes mellitus. Predominant fungi were zygomycetes (72.6 per cent) with Rhizopus arrhizus being most common. Of the patients, 12.8 per cent showed a positive biopsy report from radiologically normal sinuses. Factors affecting mortality on multivariate analysis were: female sex (p = 0.022), less than two weeks between symptoms and first intervention (p = 0.01), and intracranial involvement (p = 0.034). Other factors significant on univariate analysis were: peri-orbital swelling (p = 0.016), restricted ocular movements (p = 0.053), intracranial symptoms (p = 0.008), posterior disease (p = 0.058), imaging showing ocular involvement (p = 0.041), fungus being zygomycetes (p = 0.050) and post-operative cavity infection (p = 0.032). Bilateral, palatal and retromaxillary involvement were not associated with poor prognosis. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of acute invasive fungal sinusitis requires a high index of clinical suspicion. Recognition of factors associated with poor prognosis can help when counselling patients, and can help initiate urgent intervention by debridement and antifungal therapy. Post-operative nasal and sinus cavity care is important to reduce mortality.

The food products may attract unscrupulous vendors to dilute it with inexpensive alternative food sources to achieve more profit. The risk of high value food adulteration with cheaper substitutes has reached an alarming stage in recent years. Commonly available detection methods for food adulteration are costly, time consuming and requires high degree of technical expertise. However, a rapid and suitable detection method for possible adulterant is being evolved to tackle the aforesaid issues. In recent years, electronic nose (e-nose) system is being evolved for falsification detection of food products with reliable and rapid way. E-nose has the ability to artificially perceive aroma and distinguish them. The use of chemometric analysis together with gas sensor arrays have shown to be a significant procedure for quality monitoring in food. E-nose techniques with numerous provisions are reliable and favourable for food industry in food fraud detection. In the present review, the contributions of gas sensor based e-nose system are discussed extensively with a view to ascertain the adulteration of food products.

Background: Owing to the advancement in organ transplantation, treating an individual with organ failure in today's world has become possible. However, organ transplantation is lagging in the absence of adequate organ donations. Shortage of organs for transplantation is a challenge to developing countries like Nepal and developed countries like the USA and UK. Despite various efforts to increase the rate of organ donation, the problem persists. The primary reason for the failure to accomplish adequacy in organ do-nation is the immediate dependency on an available donor. On top of that, reluctance to decide on organ donation after death, regarded as an onerous moment, at least by the general public, has another impact on the subject. Some countries have shifted while some are planning to change from an informed consent system to a presumed consent system, in which if an individual does not make any decision during life-time, it is presumed that his/her organ can be removed for organ transplantation after death. Objective: To perceive the perception of healthcare professionals of the tertiary care centre of eastern Nepal regarding the presumed consent system. Methods: Purposive sampling of 221 health care professionals (Faculties, Nursing In-charges, Lab-technicians, and Radiology technicians) participated in the study. Results: Most healthcare professionals (90.5%) support using a presumed consent system in Nepal and agree on considering the family's opinion in the decision-making for cadaveric organ donation. Conclusion: Most healthcare professionals have shown their perception in favors of presumed consent to support the increasing organ donation rate.

Eusporangiate fern genus Ophioglossum L. is commonly known as Adder's tongue fern as its fertile frond gives the appearance of snake tongue. A new species in this fern genus, O. trilokinathii belonging to Ophioglossaceae family has been discovered from the plateau region of Rajasthan State of northwestern India. The new species can be distinguished from other taxa of this genus by its smaller habit, subglobose-tuberous rhizome, basipetal emergence of young roots, aggregation of old decaying roots on rhizome apex, fertile stalk as well as spike short and thick, trophophylls in rosette, ovate or orbicular and a unique sporoderm sculpture pattern under SEM having broad reticulations with thick and raised muri enclosing large hexagonal or irregular areas on the distal and proximal faces of the spores hitherto unreported in any of the presently known taxa of Ophioglossum. In addition, comparative study of stomatal structure, foliar anatomy and nucleotide sequence data of its three chloroplast DNA markers (trnL-F, rbcL and psbA-trnH) was carried out. In view of all the attributes including habitat, ecology, morphology, foliar anatomy, stomatal features, palynology and molecular phylogenetic data, the present study suggests that the Ophioglossum specimen collected from plateau region of Rajasthan represents a hitherto undescribed species thereby warranting its establishment as O. trilokinathii sp. nov. A detailed comparative account of the new taxon with its allied species has also been provided.

The present experiment was aimed to study differential expression of miRNAs and related mRNAs during heat stress (HS) in buffalo heifers. Twelve Murrah buffalo heifers aged between 1.5 and 2.0 years, weighting between 250 and 300 Kg were randomly assigned into two equal groups. The animals were kept in the psychrometric chamber under Thermo-neutral (TN; THI = 72) and HS (THI = 87-90) conditions for 6 h every day between 1000 and 1600 h for 21 days. The blood sampling was done at 1500 h on 15th day of the experiment and physiological parameters viz. pulse rate (PR), respiratory rate (RR) and rectal temperature (RT) were recorded at 1500 h on day -5, -3, -1, 0, +1, +3, +5 with respect to blood sampling. PBMCs were used for extraction of miRNAs and total RNA; and first strand cDNA was synthesized. qPCR was performed for relative gene expression studies. Physiological, hematological (erythrocytic indices), biochemical (triglycerides, urea, ALT, AST, LDH), redox (SOD, ROS) and endocrine parameters (T4) altered significantly (P < 0.05) during HS as compared to TN. Out of eight targeted miRNAs only four were expressed in buffalo heifers. The relative expression of bta-mir-142, bta-mir-1248 and bta-mir-2332 was significantly (P < 0.05) up-regulated whereas expression of bta-mir-2478 was significantly (P < 0.05) down-regulated during HS as compared to TN. The relative expression of the predicted target genes i.e. HSF1, HSP60, HSP70, HSPA8 and HSP90 were significantly (P < 0.05) up-regulated whereas HSF4 expression was significantly (P < 0.05) down-regulated during HS as compared to TN. It can be concluded that a THI of 87-90 could lead to a moderate HS in buffalo heifers. Differential expression studies of miRNAs and related mRNAs in present study deciphers the role of miRNAs in the heat tolerance in buffalo heifers.

The present study was attempted to identify an appropriate THI model and threshold THI for goats of semi-arid regions of India. Sixty non-pregnant goats each from Jamunapari and Barbari breeds were selected for the study. The study was conducted from last week of February to first week of June, during which average THI ranged between 53 and 92. Pulse rate (PR), respiration rate (RR) and rectal temperature (RT) were recorded at 1430 h on alternate days from six goats of each breed randomly during the experiment. Nine THI models were used to calculate THI. An appropriate THI model was predicted on the basis of correlation between THIs calculated from each model and physiological responses. The data of physiological parameters were linked to the THI calculated from identified THI model and threshold THI for each parameter was determined using segmented regression analysis (SegReg Software). The THI models; THI1{(1.8 × Tdb+32)-[(0.55-0.0055 × RH) × (1.8 × Tdb-26.8)]} and THI8{(0.8 × Tdb)+[(RH/100) × (Tdb-14.4)]+46.4)} were found to be equally appropriate for assessing environmental heat stress. Threshold THIs with respect to PR, RR and RT in Jamunapari goat were 71.78, 75.14 and 85.94, respectively and in Barbari goats, threshold THIs for PR and RR were 79.48 and 84.40, respectively. A threshold THI could not be identified for RT in Barbari goats. It can be concluded that THI1 and THI8 were the appropriate THI models for measuring environmental heat stress in goats. Results suggested that PR is the first physiological parameter which alters after the onset of heat stress and is followed by changes in RR and RT. On the basis of differential threshold THIs, it can be concluded that Barbari is better adapted than Jamunapari goats in semi-arid regions of India.

Green synthesis of nanoparticles is an important area in the field of nanotechnology, which has cost effective and environment friendly benefit over physical and chemical methods. The present study aims at preparation of silver nanoparticles through green route using leaves of Ocimum canum Sims, a widely distributed medicinal herb. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by SEM and XRD. The spherical and rod like morphological shapes were proven by SEM techniques. Crystallographic structure was confirmed by XRD and average particle size of synthesized silver nanoparticles was calculated which was found to be of 15.72 nm. The antibacterial activity of these prepared silver nanoparticles against pathogenic bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) has shown the highest ZOI of 2.45 cm at 30 ppm.

The experiment was conducted to assess the impact of arsenic (As)-contaminated groundwater irrigation on soil health and crop quality. Geo-referenced groundwater, soil, and crop produce samples were collected from the middle Gangetic plains of Maner block of Patna and were analyzed for As content. The result showed that long-term application of As-contaminated groundwater (0.017 to 0.677 mg L-1) buildup significant amount of As in the soil (0.41 to 8.66 mg kg-1). A significant correlation (r2 = 0.922) was also observed between As content in groundwater and the soil. The content of As in groundwater also affected crop quality and accumulated metal content in different crop parts. Total As content in crop samples ranged from 0.010 to 0.963 µg g-1 of dry weight. The average As content in crop followed order: oilseeds > cereals > vegetables > pulses. Therefore, produce quality should be monitored frequently for As uptake as there is a great chance of As accumulation in food crops. Hence, these approaches are useful for the formulation of policy guidelines for the management of As-containing groundwater and routine risk assessment of As-contaminated soils.

OBJECTIVES: Haematological toxicity and treatment breaks are common during cranio-spinal irradiation (CSI) due to irradiation of large volume of bone marrow. We conducted this study to see the effect of prophylactic granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF) in reducing treatment breaks. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted over a period of 15 months from August 2017 to November 2018. Histopathologically proven Medulloblastoma patients received prophylactic GCSF during CSI. Acute hematological toxicities and treatment breaks were noted and effect of age and pretreatment blood counts were analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 23. RESULTS: A total of 28 patients were included in the study. During CSI, hematological toxicity leading to treatment breaks was observed in 11 (39.3 %) patients, of which grade 3 and 2 toxicities were seen in ten and one patients respectively. Younger age (<10 years) at diagnosis was significantly associated with the development of hematological toxicity (p = 0.028, Chi-Square). No correlation was found with pre-treatment blood counts. CONCLUSION: Prophylactic use of GCSF may be effective in preventing radiation induced hematological toxicity and treatment breaks.

RESUMO

A sensor displaying a rapid response and high sensitivity was developed by following a simple route. Ionic defects in this sensor were explored using X-ray diffraction analysis. In general, such defects arise from a mismatch of ionic radii, which actually improves the sensing performance. SEM and TEM images of the currently produced particles demonstrated negligible agglomeration, which greatly enhanced the flow of water molecules through the particles. The current sensor showed a rapid response to changes in humidity. Its sensing performance was classified into three different ranges of humidity. Of these humidity ranges, the sensor showed the highest sensitivity (8.84 MΩ per %RH) at low relative humidity (10-20% RH). Furthermore, the sensitivity fall off as the RH was increased from 20 to 99%. The sensor showed a rapid response time of 20 s. Also, the sensor showed 92.98% reproducibility and few effects of aging.
