RESUMO

Background: Maedi-visna (MV) is a small ruminant lentiviral (SRLV) disease affecting sheep and goats, and causes pathological alterations in various organs including lungs, pulmonary lymph nodes, mammary glands, joints, and CNS. Aims: Present study was focused to detect the MV virus (MVV) nucleic acid and MVV p28 antigen in different organs of the spontaneously MVV affected sheep and goats. Methods: Total of 657 samples were collected from sheep and goats (169 blood, 136 lungs, 96 pulmonary lymph nodes, 74 brain, 54 mammary gland, 78 joints, and 50 spleen) and screened for MVV nucleic acid using nested PCR assay. Serum samples were screened for SRLV antibodies by cELISA. Immunolocalization of MVV was demonstrated by using the polyclonal antibody against p28 antigen by immunohistochemistry in lungs, lymph nodes, mammary glands, and joint tissues. Results: Out of 657 samples, 10.7% (70) were found positive for MVV. Among different organs, lungs showed highest positivity (25.7%) followed by mammary glands (14.8%), blood (9.5%), joint tissues (7.7%), brain (5.4%), and pulmonary lymph node (1.0%). SRLV antibodies were detected in 29.2% of the serum samples of both sheep and goats by cELISA. MVV p28 antigen immunostaining was observed in lungs, lymph nodes, mammary glands, and joint tissues. However, the presence of MVV p28 antigen could not be demonstrated in the brain tissues. Conclusion: The highest positivity of MVV in lung tissues indicated higher predilection of the virus in the pulmonary tissue.

RESUMO

The anaesthetic management of multiple traumatic injuries poses numerous challenges. In this report, we present the cases of two patients with polytrauma including pneumothoraces and multiple rib fractures. The first patient, a 39-year-old man, presented with multiple left upper limb fractures, multiple bilateral rib fractures, bilateral pneumothoraces and fractures of multiple facial and cranial bones. The second patient, a 39-year-old woman, presented with right-sided radial and ulnar fractures, a right-sided pelvic fracture, and multiple right-sided rib fractures with an associated pneumothorax. We used ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus, interscalene and supraclavicular blocks in the first case and a combined spinal and epidural after ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca and supraclavicular blocks in the second case. In both cases, the use of multiple regional techniques allowed us to avoid the risks of general anaesthesia in patients with conservatively managed pneumothoraces.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Extensive dilution of cattle semen with tris-based extender compromises certain sperm kinetic and functional traits following cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: To study sperm functions of buffalo bulls under high dilution rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four ejaculates were harvested twice a week from four buffalo bulls, and diluted to sperm concentrations of 80, 60, 40 and 20 million/mL. Diluted samples were filled in straws, equilibrated at refrigeration temperature for 4 h, and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Frozen sperm samples were thawed for evaluation of kinetic and functional attributes. RESULTS: Compared to 20 million/mL (million/mL) sperm sample, the total motility, progressive motility and rapid motility were reduced (P < 0.05) in 5 million/mL sample. The proportion of live sperm were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in 10, 15 and 20 million/mL samples than in 5 million/mL sample. The percentage of moribund sperm, dead sperm, and sperm with lipid per oxidation increased significantly (P < 0.05) in 5 million/mL sample. CONCLUSION: The reduction of sperm concentrations to < 10 million/mL affects post-thaw Buffalo sperm kinetic and functional attributes.. https://doi.org/10.54680/fr24110110712.

RESUMO

Introduction: Silicosis is a type of diffuse interstitial lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silicon dioxide. The number of silicosis cases have been rapidly increasing over the years. Complete cure is not possible so early diagnosis and prevention is required. Case presentation: Our patient came with chief complaints of productive cough, breathlessness progressing to MRC grade 4 and fever. He worked in a flour mill for 15 years and has been symptomatic for the past 4-5 years. Chest examination showed tracheal deviation to the right, bilateral decreased breath sounds and fine crepitations. Chest X ray showed multiple tiny nodular opacities in all lung zones. Pulmonary function test confirmed restrictive lung disease. On CT scan, miliary mottled densities were noted bilaterally along with fibrosis in upper lobes and ground glass appearance in lower lobes. Echocardiography revealed mild pericardial effusion and Abdominal Ultrasound revealed coarse liver texture, splenomegaly and right sided pleural effusion. Patient was also Hepatitis B positive.Patient was treated with Prednisolone, Entecavir, Moxaclav along with symptomatic management. Discussion: Male gender, HIV infection, Smoking, Occupation, Age at first exposure, Duration of exposure and Concentration of inhaled silica dust are the risk factors of silicosis. Individuals with Silicosis are at high risk of developing Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B infection. Pulmonary function test, HRCT and Lung biopsies help in diagnosis of Silicosis. Serological markers and Liver Function Test helps in diagnosis of Hepatitis B infection. Early diagnosis and prevention is essential for better prognosis and Lung transplant is the only definitive management. Complications like progressive fibrosis, infections, cor pulmonale and pneumothorax may result due to Silicosis. Conclusion: Silicosis is a rare chronic inflammatory condition which leads to an immunosuppressed state and may predispose individuals to opportunistic conditions like Hepatitis B. Therefore, early identification of risk factors and clinical features is required.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The rational use of medicines as per the World Health Organization (WHO) should be practiced globally. However, data regarding the completeness of the prescriptions and their rational use is lacking from developing countries like India. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the prescribing patterns of drugs and completeness of prescriptions as per WHO core drug use and complementary indicators to provide real-life examples for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) online prescribing skill course for medical graduates. METHODS: Prescriptions of the patients, fulfilling inclusion criteria, attending Outpatient Departments of various specialties of tertiary care hospitals, were collected by thirteen ICMR Rational use of medicines centers located in tertiary care hospitals, throughout India. Prescriptions were evaluated for rational use of medicines according to the WHO guidelines and for appropriateness as per standard treatment guidelines using a common protocol approved by local Ethics committees. RESULTS: Among 4838 prescriptions, an average of about three drugs (3.34) was prescribed to the patients per prescription. Polypharmacy was noted in 83.05% of prescriptions. Generic drugs were prescribed in 47.58% of the prescriptions. Further, antimicrobials were prescribed in 17.63% of the prescriptions and only 4.98% of prescriptions were with injectables. During the prescription evaluation, 38.65% of the prescriptions were incomplete due to multiple omissions such as dose, duration, and formulation. CONCLUSION: Most of the parameters in the present study were out of the range of WHO-recommended prescribing indicators. Therefore, effective intervention program, like training, for the promotion of rational drug use practice was recommended to improve the prescribing pattern of drugs and the quality of prescriptions all over the country.

RESUMO

In the present report, we synthesized highly porous 1D nanobelt-like cobalt phosphate (Co2P2O7) materials using a hydrothermal method for supercapacitor (SC) applications. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized 1D nanobelt-like Co2P2O7 were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface morphology results indicated that the deposition temperatures affected the growth of the 1D nanobelts. The SEM revealed a significant change in morphological results of Co2P2O7 material prepared at 150 °C deposition temperature. The 1D Co2P2O7 nanobelt-like nanostructures provided higher electrochemical properties, because the resulting empty space promotes faster ion transfer and improves cycling stability. Moreover, the electrochemical performance indicates that the 1D nanobelt-like Co2P2O7 electrode deposited at 150 °C deposition temperature shows the maximum specific capacitance (Cs). The Co2P2O7 electrode prepared at a deposition temperature 150 °C provided maximum Cs of 1766 F g-1 at a lower scan rate of 5 mV s-1 in a 1 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, an asymmetric hybrid Co2P2O7//AC supercapacitor device exhibited the highest Cs of 266 F g-1, with an excellent energy density of 83.16 Wh kg-1, and a power density of 9.35 kW kg-1. Additionally, cycling stability results indicate that the 1D nanobelt-like Co2P2O7 material is a better option for the electrochemical energy storage application.

RESUMO

Nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs) have been used to fabricate nanostructured materials for various energy devices, such as supercapacitors, sensors, batteries, and electrocatalysts. Nitrogen-doped carbon-based electrodes have been widely used to improve supercapacitor applications via various chemical approaches. Based on previous studies, CuO@MnO2 and CuO@MnO2/N-MWCNT composites were synthesized using a sonication-supported hydrothermal reaction process to evaluate their supercapacitor properties. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesized composite materials were characterized via Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, and SEM-EDX, and the morphological properties of the composite materials were confirmed by the nanostructured composite at the nanometer scale. The CuO@MnO2 and CuO@MnO2/N-MWCNT composite electrodes were fabricated in a three-electrode configuration, and electrochemical analysis was performed via CV, GCD, and EIS. The composite electrodes exhibited the specific capacitance of ~ 184 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 in the presence of a 5 M KOH electrolyte for the three-electrode supercapacitor application. Furthermore, it exhibited significantly improved specific capacitances and excellent cycling stability up to 5000 GCD cycles, with a 98.5% capacity retention.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate serum otolin-1 levels in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and to compare these levels with healthy individuals. METHOD: This was a case-control study. After obtaining institutional ethical committee clearance, the serum level of otolin-1 was calculated in adult individuals (18-75 years old) who were divided into group 1 (patients presenting with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) and group 2 (healthy patients without benign paroxysmal positional vertigo as the control group). Data analysis was carried out to compare the serum levels in the cases and controls. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 70 age-matched individuals (cases, n = 40; controls, n = 30) were included in the study. The mean serum level of otolin-1 was 636.8 pg/ml (range, 259-981 pg/ml) in the group of patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and 236.2 pg/ml (range, 189-370 pg/ml) in the control group. The difference was statistically significant (p = 0.0000). CONCLUSION: The serum levels of otolin-1 in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are significantly higher compared with individuals without benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

RESUMO

The present study compared the effect of mitochondria-targeted (Mitoquinone, MitoQ) and untargeted cytosolic antioxidant (Resveratrol, RESV) supplementation on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and in-vitro sperm functions of cryopreserved buffalo bull semen. To optimize additive's concentration, sperm pellet obtained from twenty-four ejaculates was supplemented with different concentrations of MitoQ (20 nM, 100 nM, 200 nM); and RESV (10 µM, 25 µM, 50 µM) against control in the extender. The post-thaw sperm motility, livability, and membrane integrity were higher (P < 0.05) in 200 nM MitoQ and 50 µM RESV than other concentrations used. In another experiment, sperm pellet from thirty-two ejaculates was supplemented with 200 nM MitoQ and 50 µM RESV in the extender. Pre-freeze and post-thaw progressive motility and livability were higher (P < 0.05) in MitoQ (200 nM) than RESV (50 µM) treatment. MitoQ supplementation improved post-thaw membrane integrity (CFDA-PI) higher (P < 0.05) than RESV, however, hypo-osmotic swelling response observed no improvement with RESV treatment. Post-thaw LPO rate was lower (P < 0.05) and Bovine cervical mucus penetration was higher (P < 0.05) in MitoQ than RESV treatment. In post-thaw semen, MitoQ showed higher (P < 0.05) proportion of acrosome intact (FITC-PNA), live non-apoptotic (P < 0.01) sperm with a higher reduction (P < 0.05) in membrane scrambling. MitoQ improved (P < 0.01) proportion of sperm with high Mitochondrial Membrane Potential and low LPO (P < 0.01) than RESV treatment. In conclusion, improvement in post-thaw in-vitro sperm functions and cryo-tolerance was more evident in MitoQ than RESV supplemented buffalo bull semen. Our study provides a better strategy to mitigate oxidative stress by enhancing mitochondrial antioxidant system with targeted antioxidants than cytosolic antioxidant supplementation.

RESUMO

In this study, a novel nanohybrid composite containing nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes/carboxymethylcellulose (N-MWCNT/CMC) was synthesized for supercapacitor applications. The synthesized composite materials were subjected to an ultrasonication-mediated solvothermal hydrothermal reaction. The synthesized nanohybrid composite electrode material was characterized using analytical methods to confirm its structure and morphology. The electrochemical properties of the composite electrode were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using a 3 M KOH electrolyte. The fabricated composite material exhibited unique electrochemical properties by delivering a maximum specific capacitance of approximately 274 F g-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1. The composite electrode displayed high cycling stability of 96% after 4000 cycles at 2 A g-1, indicating that it is favorable for supercapacitor applications.

RESUMO

Here, we developed a new approach to synthesize NiCo2S4 thin films for supercapacitor application using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method on Ni mesh with different molar ratios of Ni and Co precursors. The five different NiCo2S4 electrodes affect the electrochemical performance of the supercapacitor. The NiCo2S4 thin films demonstrate superior supercapacitance performance with a significantly higher specific capacitance of 1427 F g-1 at a scan rate of 20 mV s-1. These results indicate that ternary NiCo2S4 thin films are more effective electrodes compared to binary metal oxides and metal sulfides.

RESUMO

The porous materials of SnO2@NGO composite was synthesized by thermal reduction process at 550 °C in presence ammonia and urea as catalyst. In this process, the higher electrostatic attraction between the SnO2@NGO nanoparticles were anchored via thermal reduction reaction. These synthesized SnO2@ NGO composites were confirmed by Raman, XRD, XPS, HR-TEM, and EDX results. The SnO2 nanoparticles were anchored in the NGO composite in the controlled nanometer scale proved by FE-TEM and BET analysis. The SnO2@NGO composite was used to study the electrochemical properties of CV, GCD, and EIS analysis for supercapacitor application. The electrochemical properties of SnO2@NGO exhibited the specific capacitance (~378 F/g at a current density of 4 A/g) and increasing the cycle stability up to 5000 cycles. Therefore, the electrochemical results of SnO2@NGO composite could be promising for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

RESUMO

In this work, the extraordinary properties of CuO addition on the morphology and supercapacitive performance of Mn2O3 electrodes were demonstrated. Concisely, CuO/Mn2O3 thin films were prepared by an easy and inexpensive successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The prepared thin films were characterized by various sophisticated physiochemical systems. The results demonstrated formation of Mn2O3 thin films with noteworthy morphological alteration upon introduction of CuO. Furthermore, a significant effect of CuO introduction was observed on the electrocatalytic properties of the nanostructured Mn2O3 electrodes. At 3% CuO doping, the Mn2O3 electrodes displayed the maximum specific capacitance owing to formation of nanoplate-like structures. The enhanced specific capacitance attained for 3% CuO doping in the Mn2O3 electrode was 500 F/g at 5 mV/s in a 3 M KOH electrolyte. All results confirmed the plausible potential of the CuO/Mn2O3 electrode for supercapacitor applications.

RESUMO

We report the effect of ionic liquids on chemically synthesized hierarchical-like copper oxide (CuO) thin films for supercapacitor applications. Concisely, the CuO thin films were deposited via chemical bath deposition (CBD) using 2-dimethylimidazolium chloride [HPDMIM(C1)], 1-(2',3'-dihydroxypropyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride [DHPMIM(C1)], and N-(3-methyl-2-oxopropyl)pyridine chloride [MOCPP(C1)] ionic liquid solvents. The effects of the ionic liquid solvents on the morphological evolution of the as-prepared films were analyzed, and electrochemical properties were investigated. The highest specific capacitance was achieved for the electrode with a nanosheet-like structure produced by functionalization with the HPDMIM(C1) ionic liquid. The maximum specific capacitance achieved for the HPDMIM(C1):CuO hybrid electrode was 464 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1 in a 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Thus, our findings, in addition to the stability of the HPDMIM(C1):CuO, indicate that it is a candidate for energy-storage applications.

RESUMO

Downy mildew (DM) caused by Sclerospora graminicola is the most calamitous disease of pearl millet. Therefore, for introgression of DM resistance (DMR) in HHB 197 (MH-1302), an elite pearl millet hybrid, a marker-assisted breeding was undertaken by targeting three DMR loci on linkage groups (LGs) 1, 2 and 4. Breeding programme was initiated by crossing HBL 11 (DM susceptible), male parent of HHB 197 hybrid with ICMP 451 (DM-resistant) to produce true F1 plants. By conducting three rounds of backcrossing and selection, BC3F1 lines were generated. Foreground selection was employed using six polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers of the 18 total selected markers. Four of these markers were linked to LG 1, five to LG 2 and nine to LG 4. Background selection was performed in BC3F1 generation using 33 polymorphic SSR markers of a total of 56 evenly spread SSR markers in the pearl millet genome to check recovery of recurrent parent genome. On the basis of genotypic selection (foreground as well as background) using selected SSR markers, agronomic performance in field and DM screening in greenhouse; 10 improved HBL 11 lines were selected and crossed with ICMA 97111 to produce DM-resistant HHB 197 hybrid versions. Six putatively improved HHB 197 hybrids were successfully tested in first year trials at Hisar and Bawal locations of Haryana and two selected versions with higher yield and zero DM incidence will be further tested in multilocation trials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The membrane and acrosomal integrity of sperm play a vital role in fertilization process; however they are compromised upon cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrin (CLC) on membrane and acrosome status of Hariana bull sperm during cryopreservation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semen samples collected from Hariana bulls with mass motility ≥ 3+ and individual progressive motility ≥ 70% were utilized in the study. Each ejaculate was split into two parts, one part being evaluated freshly for various seminal attributes and the other part being diluted in Tris diluent (without egg yolk and glycerol) to obtain a final concentration of 120×106 sperm/mL. The diluted semen was divided into four treatments: Group I, without CLC (control); Group II, with CLC at 0.5 mg per 120 million sperm; Group III, at 1.0 mg per 120 million sperm; Group IV, at 2.0 mg per 120 million sperm. All aliquots were incubated for 15 min at 37°C and each sample was diluted with Egg yolk-Tris-Glycerol (EYTG) extender up to 80×106 sperm/mL. The diluted semen samples were packed in French mini straws (0.25 mL), sealed and equilibrated at 4°C for 4 h followed by cryopreservation. The samples at pre-freeze and post-thaw stage were evaluated for membrane and acrosomal integrity, as well as primary, secondary and tertiary acrosomal damages. RESULTS: The membrane and acrosomal integrity was significantly higher in group II as compared to groups I, III, and IV, at pre-freeze and post-thaw stage (P<0.05). The primary and secondary acrosomal damage were significantly reduced in group II compared to other groups (P<0.05). No significant difference in tertiary acrosomal damage was found among different groups. CONCLUSION: CLC improves the membrane and acrosomal integrity, and reduces primary and secondary acrosomal damages during cryopreservation of Hariana bull sperm.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is an effective mediator of ischemic preconditioning (IPC)-induced cardioprotection. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is downregulated after ovariectomy, which results in reduction in the level of NO. The present study deals with the investigation of the role of ANP in abrogated cardioprotective effect of IPC in the ovariectomized rat heart. METHODS: Heart was isolated from ovariectomized rat and mounted on Langendorff's apparatus, subjected to 30 min of ischemia and 120 min of reperfusion. IPC was given by four cycles of 5 min of ischemia and 5 min of reperfusion with Krebs-Henseleit solution. The myocardial infract size was estimated employing triphenyltetrazolium chloride stain, and coronary effluent was analyzed for creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release to consider the degree of myocardial injury. The cardiac release of NO was estimated by measuring the level of nitrite in coronary effluent. RESULTS: IPC-mediated cardioprotection was significantly attenuated in ovariectomized rat as compared to normal rat, which was restored by perfusion with ANP. However, this observed cardioprotection was significantly attenuated by perfusion with L-NAME, an endothelial nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, and Glibenclamide, a KATP channel blocker, alone or in combination noted in terms of increase in myocardial infract size, release of CK-MB and LDH, and also decrease in release of NO. CONCLUSION: Thus, it is suggested that ANP restores the attenuated cardioprotective effect of IPC in the ovariectomized rat heart which may be due to increase in the availability of NO and consequent increase activation of mitochondrial KATP channels.

RESUMO

Phosphorus is an essential element for all life forms. Phosphate solubilizing bacteria are capable of converting phosphate into a bioavailable form through solubilization and mineralization processes. Hence in the present study a phosphate solubilizing bacterium, PSB-37, was isolated from mangrove soil of the Mahanadi river delta using NBRIP-agar and NBRIP-BPB broth containing tricalcium phosphate as the phosphate source. Based on phenotypic and molecular characterization, the strain was identified as Serratia sp. The maximum phosphate solubilizing activity of the strain was determined to be 44.84 µg/ml, accompanied by a decrease in pH of the growth medium from 7.0 to 3.15. During phosphate solubilization, various organic acids, such as malic acid (237 mg/l), lactic acid (599.5 mg/l) and acetic acid (5.0 mg/l) were also detected in the broth culture through HPLC analysis. Acid phosphatase activity was determined by performing p-nitrophenyl phosphate assay (pNPP) of the bacterial broth culture. Optimum acid phosphatase activity was observed at 48 h of incubation (76.808 U/ml), temperature of 45 °C (77.87 U/ml), an agitation rate of 100 rpm (80.40 U/ml), pH 5.0 (80.66 U/ml) and with glucose as a original carbon source (80.6 U/ml) and ammonium sulphate as a original nitrogen source (80.92 U/ml). Characterization of the partially purified acid phosphatase showed maximum activity at pH 5.0 (85.6 U/ml), temperature of 45 °C (97.87 U/ml) and substrate concentration of 2.5 mg/ml (92.7 U/ml). Hence the present phosphate solubilizing and acid phosphatase production activity of the bacterium may have probable use for future industrial, agricultural and biotechnological application.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Attenuated cardioprotective effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) by reduced nitric oxide (NO) is a hallmark during diabetes mellitus (DM). Recently, we reported that the formation of caveolin-endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) complex decreases the release of NO, which is responsible for attenuation of IPC-induced cardioprotection in DM rat heart. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) facilitates release of NO by disrupting caveolin-eNOS complex. The activity of HO-1 is decreased during DM. This study was designed to investigate the role of hemin (HO-1 inducer) in attenuated cardioprotective effect of IPC in isolated diabetic rat heart. METHODS: DM was induced in male Wistar rat by single dose of streptozotocin. Cardioprotective effect was assessed in terms of myocardial infarct size and release of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase in coronary effluent. The release of NO was estimated indirectly by measuring the release of nitrite in coronary effluent. Perfusion of sodium nitrite, a precursor of NO, was used as a positive control. RESULT: IPC-induced cardioprotection and increased release of nitrite were significantly attenuated in a diabetic rat as compared to a normal rat. Pretreatment with hemin and daidzein, a caveolin inhibitor, alone or in combination significantly restored the attenuated cardioprotection and increased the release of nitrite in diabetic rat heart. Zinc protoporphyrin, a HO-1 inhibitor, significantly abolished the observed cardioprotection and decreased the release of nitrite in hemin pretreated DM rat heart. CONCLUSION: Thus, it is suggested that hemin restores the attenuated cardioprotective effect in diabetic rat heart by increasing the activity of HO-1 and subsequently release of NO.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To find out clinical and laboratory profile of patients of chikungunya outbreak in 2006 in Bikaner (North-West Rajasthan) and follow up of chikungunya patients for 5 years. METHODS: Study was conducted among 50 chikungunya patients. For this study the inclusion criteria was clinical presentation consistent with chikungunya virus infection (e.g. abrupt onset of fever and/or polyarthralgia) and laboratory confirmation of chikungunya virus infection by IgM-capture ELISA. All patients were subjected for thorough clinical and general physical examination, investigations like CBC, ESR, CRP, rheumatoid factor, ECG, LFT, RFT, anti-CCP antibody were done in all patients and their follow up was done for 5 years. RESULTS: Among the 50 patients of chikungunya arthritis 34 (68%) patients developed persistent arthritis. Among the patients with persistent arthritis 70.58% were shown positive for anti-ccp antibody. CRP (95.24%) and ESR level were raised (68%) in patient with persistent arthralgia. Level of CRP and ESR was proportionally related to number of partially recovered joints, higher the CRP positivity and raised ESR levels severe were the persistent arthralgias. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that chikungunya patients who had persistent arthralgia on 5 year follow up mimicked rheumatological disorder like rheumatoid arthritis in 70.58%. Therefore DMARD can be effective.
