RESUMO

Microalgal biomass has received much attention as feedstock for biofuel production due to its capacity to accumulate a substantial amount of biocomponents (including lipid, carbohydrate, and protein), high growth rate, and environmental benefit. However, commercial realization of microalgal biofuel is a challenge due to its low biomass production and insufficient technology for complete utilization of biomass. Recently, advanced strategies have been explored to overcome the challenges of conventional approaches and to achieve maximum possible outcomes in terms of growth. These strategies include a combination of stress factors; co-culturing with other microorganisms; and addition of salts, flue gases, and phytohormones. This review summarizes the recent progress in the application of single and combined abiotic stress conditions to stimulate microalgal growth and its biocomponents. An innovative schematic model is presented of the biomass-energy conversion pathway that proposes the transformation of all potential biocomponents of microalgae into biofuels.

We synthesized a new organic fluorescent dye named resveratrone glucoside from the photoreaction of naturally-occurring phytoalexin compound resveratrol glucoside (resveratrol-3-ß-mono-d-glucoside), which is abundant in various plants such as berries, herbs, nuts and grapes. Just like its predecessor molecule resveratrone that was previously discovered by our group, resveratrone glucoside possesses excellent optical properties including a high fluorescence quantum yield, a large Stokes' shift, and a large two-photon absorption cross section. In addition to these highly desirable properties, both fluorescent molecules can also be used as ideal bio-compatible organic fluorophores since they have remarkably low cytotoxicity, which we verified through our cell morphological study, trypan blue exclusion assay, Western blot analysis and fluorescence imaging of various live biological specimens. In particular, we note that resveratrone glucoside is much more soluble in aqueous solution because of its glycosidic side chain and therefore highly suitable for in vivo imaging. We demonstrated that resveratrone and resveratrone glucoside can be used in one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopic imaging of E. coli, yeast (S. cerevisiae), and mammalian cell lines including HeLa and MCF10A cells as well as to the live imaging and real-time tracking of the zebrafish embryo development. Both organic fluorophores can be readily obtained from a simple photoreaction of commercially available, inexpensive samples.

We present time-gated femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (fSRS) under the pre-resonance Raman conditions of diethylthiatricarbocyanine (DTTC) iodide. A 'pseudo emission-free' condition is achieved by delivering the probe beam ahead of the pump beam. Regeneratively amplified pulse trains are employed to create an angle-geometry (non-collimated) mixing between the pump and probe beams, leading to highly sensitive measurement of the stimulated Raman gain. Time-integrated spectroscopy allows for a more quantitative distinction between the contributions of stimulated Raman scattering and stimulated emission. We successfully obtain a highly sensitive (signal-to-noise ratio >100) stimulated Raman spectrum under the optimized conditions, which compares favourably to results obtained using two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS). Given the optical pre-resonance of ∼0.1 eV, the background signals mostly originate from the stimulated emission of excited electrons and are significantly reduced by partial overlapping of the pump and probe beams; a genuine fSRS spectral profile is obtained for a temporal delay of ∼0.2 ps between the two beams.

We present a facile synthesis of europium-doped gadolinium sulfide (GdS:Eu(3+)) opto-magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) via sonochemistry. Their photoluminescence and strong paramagnetic properties enable these NPs to be utilized as an in vitro cell imaging and in vivo T(1)-weighted MR imaging probe. The GdS:Eu(3+) NPs have a prominent longitudinal (r(1)) relaxivity value, which is a critical parameter for T(1)-weighted MR imaging. Here, we showed not only their strong positive contrast effect to blood vessels and organs of mice, but also blood half-life and biodistribution including clearance from organs, in order to assess the GdS:Eu(3+) NPs as a competent nanocrystal-based T(1) contrast agent. We further showed confocal images of breast cancer cells containing GdS:Eu(3+) NPs to evaluate as a photoluminescence probe. Dual-mode imaging capability obtained from the GdS:Eu(3+) NPs will allow target-oriented cellular imaging as well as the resulting disease-specific MR imaging.

RESUMO

UV irradiation of trans-resveratrol leads to its photochemical transformation to a new, highly fluorescent compound, whose chemical structure was unambiguously identified. The new compound has large values of fluorescence quantum yield, Stokes' shift, and two-photon absorption cross section, which make it suitable for bio-imaging, multi-color labeling, and two-photon microscopy.

RESUMO

Highly stable and luminescent InP/GaP/ZnS QDs with a maximum quantum yield of 85% were synthesized by in situ method. The GaP shell rendered passivation of the surface and removed the traps. TCSPC data showed an evidence for the GaP shell. InP/GaP/ZnS QDs show better stability than InP/ZnS. We studied the optical properties of white QD-LEDs corresponding to various QD concentrations. Among various concentrations, the white QD-LEDs with 0.5 mL of QDs exhibited a luminous efficiency of 54.71 lm/W, Ra of 80.56, and CCT of 7864 K.
