RESUMO

Objective: Brucellosis is a serious public health issue in Qinghai (QH), China. Surveying the seroprevalence and isolation of B. abortus strains from marmots is key to understanding the role of wildlife in the maintenance and spread of brucellosis. Methods: In this study, a set of methods, including a serology survey, bacteriology, antibiotic susceptibility, molecular genotyping (MLST and MLVA), and genome sequencing, were employed to characterize the two B. abortus strains. Results: The seroprevalence of brucellosis in marmots was 7.0% (80/1146) by serum tube agglutination test (SAT); one Brucella strain was recovered from these positive samples, and another Brucella strain from a human. Two strains were identified as B. abortus bv. 1 and were susceptible to all eight drugs examined. The distribution patterns of the accessory genes, virulence associated genes, and resistance genes of the two strains were consistent, and there was excellent collinearity between the two strains on chromosome I, but they had significant SVs in chromosome II, including inversions and translocations. MLST genotyping identified two B. abortus strains as ST2, and MLVA-16 analysis showed that the two strains clustered with strains from northern China. WGS-SNP phylogenetic analysis showed that the strains were genetically homogeneous with strains from the northern region, implying that strains from a common lineage were spread continuously in different regions and hosts. Conclusion: Seroprevalence and molecular clues demonstrated frequent direct or indirect contact between sheep/goats, cattle, and marmots, implying that wildlife plays a vital role in the maintenance and spread of B. abortus in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

RESUMO

Since 2010, the cases and incidences of human brucellosis have been increasing annually in Qinghai (QH) Province. Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic analyses of strains from this region are crucial to better understand the transmission of the disease and the evolutionary patterns of Brucella strains. In this study, classical bio-typing assay, multilocus variable-number tandem repeat analysis, and the whole-genome sequencing-single-nucleotide polymorphism approach were used to illustrate the epidemiological and evolutionary patterns of Brucella melitensis. A total of 54 B. melitensis bv. 3 strains were isolated and molecularly characterized, with all strains belonging to the East Mediterranean lineages. Cross-regional transmission events (i.e., between counties) were caused by common sources of infection, suggesting that predominant circulating genotypes are endemic in different regions. Strengthening surveillance in animal brucellosis and controlling infected animals' cross-border movement are necessary. Two strains isolated from humans and marmots were clustered in the same sub-clade, implying the possible existence of direct and/or indirect contact between sheep (and goats) and wildlife (marmots), but this needs to be verified by further investigations. The global-scale phylogenetic analysis indicated that 54 strains sorted into six subclades, four of which formed independent lineages, suggesting that the increase in the incidence rate of human brucellosis may be caused by local circulating lineages. Further strengthening the serology and pathogen surveillance of animals (wildlife) and humans will contribute to an in-depth understanding of the transmission chain of human brucellosis in this region.

RESUMO

In this work, surface nano-stripes and a reflective grating have been fabricated on shape memory polymers (SMPs) to simulate the active color change of chameleons. The structural color resulting from the interference of reflected light exhibits high saturation and it can be regulated continuously based on the shape memory effect. In addition to the viewing angle, the attained color is sensitive to the deformation at the macroscale. Uniaxial tension along stripes at high temperature produces a remarkable blueshift of the resultant color (from red to green and blue) which can switch back to red after shape recovery upon heating. The evolution of structural color can be attributed to the lower and higher magnitudes of nano-structure periods in temporary (deformed) and permanent (recovery) states respectively. Based on the combination of angle and deformation dependences of structural color, a "colorful" product code has been fabricated. It exhibits enhanced ability to hide and display information which plays an important role in anti-counterfeiting.

RESUMO

The booming growth of all inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites in optoelectronic applications has prompted extensive research interest in the fabrication of ordered nanostructures or microarrays for enhanced device performances. However, the high cost and complexity of commercial lithographic approaches impede the facile fabrication of perovskite microarrays. Herein, CsPbBr3 microarrays with tunable periodicities have been fabricated using a self-assembled polystyrene nanosphere template and a co-evaporation method. The periodicity of CsPbBr3 microarrays is precisely manipulated by simply modifying the size of polystyrene nanospheres. These microarrays are beneficial for light harvesting, leading to better light absorption ability and prolonged photoinduced carrier lifetime. The longest average carrier lifetime of 58.3 ns is obtained for CsPbBr3 microarrays with a periodicity of 1.0 µm. More importantly, the periodic structures of CsPbBr3 microarrays result in a tunable density of emitter tips in field emission devices. Compared to compact CsPbBr3 films, a 68.2% decrease of the turn-on field is observed for CsPbBr3 microarrays when the periodicity is 150 nm. The higher density of emitter tips leads to larger local field enhancement, and hence the largest field enhancement factor of 3346.6. Finally, a good emission current stability for CsPbBr3 microarray-based field emission devices has been demonstrated.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of human brucellosis in Qinghai Province of China has been increasing rapidly, with confirmed cases distributed across 31 counties. However, the epidemiology of brucellosis transmission has not been fully elucidated. To characterize the infecting strains isolated from humans, multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) and whole-genome single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based approaches were employed. METHODS: Strains were isolated from two males blood cultures that were confirmed Brucella melitensis positive following biotyping and MLVA. Genomic DNA was extracted from these two strains, and whole-genome sequencing was performed. Next, SNP-based phylogenetic analysis was performed to compare the two strains to 94 B. melitensis strains (complete genome and draft genome) retrieved from online databases. RESULTS: The two Brucella isolates were identified as B. melitensis biovar 3 (QH2019001 and QH2019005) following conventional biotyping and were found to have differences in their variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) using MLVA-16. Phylogenetic examination assigned the 96 strains to five genotype groups, with QH2019001 and QH2019005 assigned to the same group, but different subgroups. Moreover, the QH2019005 strain was assigned to a new subgenotype, IIj, within genotype II. These findings were then combined to determine the geographic origin of the two Brucella strains. CONCLUSIONS: Utilizing a whole-genome SNP-based approach enabled differences between the two B. melitensis strains to be more clearly resolved, and facilitated the elucidation of their different evolutionary histories. This approach also revealed that QH2019005 is a member of a new subgenotype (IIj) with an ancient origin in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

RESUMO

ZnO has broad applications in optoelectronic devices, including ultraviolet light emitters and photodetectors. Herein we report the impact of MoO3 surface functionalization on the photoresponse of epitaxially grown ZnO. Under illumination with 350 nm UV light, the photocurrent of ZnO is found to be enhanced by 2.87 times after the deposition of 0.2 nm MoO3. As corroborated by in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, the enhanced photoresponse derives from MoO3 related gap states within the band gap of ZnO and larger upward band bending at the interface, which is attributed to the strong electron transfer from ZnO to MoO3. Moreover, photoluminescence results reveal that the recombination probability of the photo-generated charge carriers in ZnO is reduced after MoO3 surface functionalization.

RESUMO

More and more attractive applications of two-dimensional (2D) materials in nanoelectronic devices are being achieved successfully, which promotes the rapid and extensive development of new 2D materials. In this work, the structural and electronic properties of the V structure aluminum phosphide (V-AlP) monolayer are examined by density functional calculations, and its electronic properties under strain and an electric field are also explored in detail. The computation results indicate that it has good stability. Interestingly, it possesses a wide direct gap (2.6 eV), and its band gap exhibits a rich behavior depending on the strain, E-field and layer stacking. Under biaxial strain, its band gap can be tuned from 1 eV to 2.6 eV. And a direct-indirect band gap transition is found when external tension is applied. The V-AlP monolayer also exhibits anisotropic behavior as its band structure variation trends under strains along different directions are obviously different. When the external E-field is changed from 0.5 V Å-1 to 1 V Å-1, the band gap of the V-AlP monolayer can be tuned linearly from 0 eV to 2.6 eV. Layer stacking narrows the band gap of the 2D V-AlP material. It is concluded that strain, E-field and layer stacking can all be used effectively to modify the electronic property of the V-AlP monolayer. Thus, these results indicate that the V-AlP monolayer will have promising applications in nanoelectric devices.

RESUMO

The ground state structures of copper clusters with different sizes along with their aggregation have been systematic investigated using Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) and Atomistix ToolKit (ATK) programs. On the basis of geometry optimization, some Cu clusters with more stable structures which were not reported previously have been revealed. In most cases, these Cu clusters prefer to adopt icosahedral structures which originate from the 13-atom icosahedron. It has also been demonstrated that the interaction between two Cu clusters is anisotropic, which is attributed to their charge distribution, especially the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of Cu clusters. Moreover, we have carried out the simulation of Cu clusters aggregation on the silicone oil substrate by means of Monte Carlo (MC) method, which shows good consistence with our previous experimental studies.

RESUMO

The impact of graphene work function (WF) on the electronic structure at the graphene/organic interface has been investigated. WF manipulation of graphene is realized using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with different end groups. With this method, the upper surface of the functionalized graphene remains intact, and thus precludes changes of molecular orientation and packing structures of subsequently deposited active materials. The WF of NH2-SAM functionalized graphene is ~3.90 eV. On the other hand, the WF of graphene increases to ~5.38 eV on F-SAM. By tuning the WF of graphene, an upward band bending is found at the ZnPc/graphene interface on F-SAM. At the interface between C60 and NH2-SAM modified graphene, a downward band bending is observed.

RESUMO

Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays were successfully synthesized by the combination of soft and hard templates. In the fabrication of them, anodic aluminum oxide membranes act as the hard template while the self-assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) complexed with titanium-tetraisopropoxide (TTIP, the precursor of TiO2) provides the soft template to control the grain size of TiO2 nanotubes. Our results indicate that the field emission (FE) performance depends crucially on the grain size of the calcinated TiO2 which is dominated by the PS-b-PEO and its blending ratio with TTIP. The optimized sample (with the TTIP/PEO ratio of 3.87) exhibits excellent FE performances involving both a low turn-on field of 3.3 V/um and a high current density of 7.6 mA/cm2 at 12.7 V/µm. The enhanced FE properties can be attributed to the low effective work function (1.2 eV) resulted from the smaller grain size of TiO2.

RESUMO

The manipulation of charge transfer at CuPc/graphene interface has been demonstrated by treating pristine graphene with O2 plasma. As revealed by in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, a much stronger interfacial charge transfer occurs when the pristine graphene is exposed to O2 plasma prior to the growth of CuPc films, which is attributed to the increased work function of graphene after O2 plasma treatment. Moreover, the highest occupied molecular orbital leading edge of CuPc locates at ∼0.80 eV below substrate Fermi level on O2 plasma treated graphene, whereas it locates at ∼1.10 eV on pristine graphene. Our findings provide detailed information regarding the electronic structure at CuPc/graphene and CuPc/O2 plasma treated graphene interfaces. The increased work function in combination with the relatively smaller energy offset between the highest occupied molecular orbital of CuPc and Fermi level of O2 plasma treated graphene facilitates the extraction of holes at the interface, and hence paves the way for improving the performance of graphene-based organic photovoltaic cells.
