RESUMO

Members of the CEP (C-terminally Encoded Peptide) gene family have been shown to be involved in various developmental processes and stress responses in plants. In order to understand the roles of CEP peptides in stress response, a comprehensive bioinformatics approach was employed to identify NtCEP genes in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and to analyze their potential roles in stress responses. Totally 21 NtCEP proteins were identified and categorized into two subgroups based on their CEP domains. Expression changes of the NtCEP genes in response to various abiotic stresses were analyzed via qRT-PCR and the results showed that a number of NtCEPs were significant up-regulated under drought, salinity, or temperature stress conditions. Furthermore, application of synthesized peptides derived from NtCEP5, NtCEP13, NtCEP14, and NtCEP17 enhanced plant tolerance to different salt stress treatments. NtCEP5, NtCEP9 and NtCEP14, and NtCEP17 peptides were able to promote osmotic tolerance of tobacco plants. The results from this study suggest that NtCEP peptides may serve as important signaling molecules in tobacco's response to abiotic stresses.

RESUMO

Plastics have become an essential part of life. When it enters the environment, it migrates and breaks down to form smaller size fragments, which are called microplastics (MPs). Compared with plastics, MPs are detrimental to the environment and pose a severe threat to human health. Bioremediation is being recognized as the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective degradation technology for MPs, but knowledge about the biodegradation of MPs is limited. This review explores the various sources of MPs and their migration behavior in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Among the existing MPs removal technologies, biodegradation is considered to be the best removal strategy to alleviate MPs pollution. The biodegradation potential of MPs by bacteria, fungi and algae is discussed. Biodegradation mechanisms such as colonization, fragmentation, assimilation, and mineralization are presented. The effects of MPs characteristics, microbial activity, environmental factors and chemical reagents on biodegradation are analyzed. The susceptibility of microorganisms to MPs toxicity might lead to decreased degradation efficiency, which is also elaborated. The prospects and challenges of biodegradation technologies are discussed. Eliminating prospective bottlenecks is necessary to achieve large-scale bioremediation of MPs-polluted environment. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the biodegradability of MPs, which is crucial for the prudent management of plastic waste.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Relatively few studies have focused on mortality risk factors for listeriosis in the literature. Information on the mortality of populations with listeriosis is needed. We aimed to explore the mortality risk factors related to listeriosis in this meta-analysis. METHODS: The studies were considered eligible for inclusion only if they directly compared the mortality risk factors for listeriosis between dead patients and surviving patients. The mortality risk factors included clinical predisposing factors and predisposing comorbidities. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included in this study. There were 12,265 listeriosis patients, including 2863 (23.3%) dead patients. The meta-analysis provided evidence that the mortality risk factors related to listeriosis were as follows: 1. Clinical predisposing factors included age ≥ 60 years, primary bacteremia and central nervous system involvement; 2. Predisposing comorbidities included non-hematological malignancies, alcoholism, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary disease. In addition, autoimmune disease comorbidity had a protective effect against listeriosis. CONCLUSION: The presence of older patients, primary bacteremia, central nervous system involvement, non-hematological malignancies, alcoholism, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary disease should alert physicians to the higher risk of mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) may reduce acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease through an antioxidant effect. Due to the heterogeneity in studies, the currently available data do not confirm the efficacy of oral NAC therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. We hypothesize that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients receiving regular oral NAC therapy do not achieve improved clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy of long-term oral NAC therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: The literature search was performed using the PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases to identify all included clinical studies. Studies were eligible for inclusion only if they directly compared the outcomes of NAC versus placebo in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease between 1 January 2000 and 30 May 2022. All studies were included if they reported one or more of the following outcomes: number of patients with no acute exacerbations, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), St George's Respiratory Questionnaire score, glutathione level, and adverse events. RESULTS: Nine randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis. There were 1061 patients in the NAC group and 1076 patients in the placebo group. The current meta-analysis provides evidence that the number of patients with no acute exacerbations (965 patients receiving NAC therapy, 979 control group patients), change in FEV1 (433 patients receiving NAC therapy, 447 control group patients), change in FVC (177 patients receiving NAC therapy, 180 control group patients), change in St George's Respiratory Questionnaire score (128 patients receiving NAC therapy, 131 control group patients), change in glutathione levels (38 patients receiving NAC therapy, 40 control group patients), and adverse events (832 patients receiving NAC therapy, 846 control group patients) were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: NAC did not reduce the risk of acute exacerbation or ameliorate the decline in lung volume in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

RESUMO

High microwave-response cobalt-substituted manganese ferrite (CMFO-0.5) was successfully synthesized as a heterogeneous catalyst for efficient peracetic acid (PAA) activation and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation with singlet oxygen (1O2) as the dominated reactive oxidized species (ROS). The removal efficiency of TCH could reach 98.16% within 6 min under microwave irradiation when the CMFO-0.5 was added at 20 mg/L. It's found that the Co substitution could produce the oxygen vacancies (OVs), improve the microwave (MW) absorbing performance and enhance the internal electron transfer efficiency of materials. The phenomenon why 1O2 as the dominated ROS rather than hydroxyl radical (•OH) and organic radicals (R-O•) would be explained by the following aspects: the oxygen adsorbed on the OVs can accept the electron transformed from PAA to form superoxide radical (•O2-), which will disproportionate to form 1O2; the energy generated by the non-thermal effect of MW can dissociate PAA to generate peroxy-group for 1O2 generation. Furthermore, the possible TCH degradation pathways were proposed based on DFT theory calculations and product identification, and the toxicity predictions of the degradation products were also performed by the Ecological Structure-Activity Relationship Model (ECOSAR) software. Additionally, the decrease of acute toxicity of treated TCH, excellent stability and strong resistance towards water matrix fully demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system for practical application in wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Clinically, doripenem therapy for nosocomial pneumonia remains a serious concern. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to explore the efficacy and the safety of doripenem therapy for nosocomial pneumonia in comparison with other antimicrobial agents. METHODS: Studies were eligible for inclusion only if they directly compared the clinical effectiveness of doripenem and other antimicrobial agent therapies for nosocomial pneumonia in adult patients between 1 January 2000 and 30 April 2022. All studies were included if they reported one or more of the following outcomes: clinical cure rate, microbiological cure rate, all-cause mortality, and adverse events. RESULTS: Six randomized controlled trials and three retrospective studies were included in the meta-analysis. There were 952 patients in the doripenem group and 1183 patients in the comparator group. The comparator antimicrobial agents included imipenem/cilastatin, meropenem, and piperacillin/tazobactam. Seven studies had a high risk of bias. Doripenem therapy for nosocomial pneumonia had a microbiological cure rate, a clinical cure rate, an all-cause mortality, and adverse events similar to those of comparators. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy and the safety of doripenem therapy for nosocomial pneumonia were comparable with those of comparators. Randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the role of doripenem in nosocomial pneumonia therapy.

RESUMO

As a special type of wastewater produced in the landfill, leachate is mainly composed of organic pollutants, inorganic salts, ammonia nitrogen and heavy metals, and featured by high pollutants concentration, complex composition and large fluctuations in water quality and volume. Biological, chemical and physical methods have been proposed to treat landfill leachate, but much attention has been paid to the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), due to their high adaptability and organic degradation efficiency. This paper summarizes the recent findings on the AOPs based on hydroxyl radical (OH) (e.g., ozonation and catalyzed ozone oxidations, Fenton and Fenton-like oxidations) and sulfate radical (SO4-) (e.g., activated and catalyzed persulfate oxidations), especially the production routes of free radicals and mechanisms of action. When dealing with some special landfill leachates, it is difficult for a single advanced oxidation technology to achieve the expected results, but the synergistic combination with biological or physical methods can produce satisfactory outcomes. Therefore, this paper has summarized the application of these combined treatment technologies on landfill leachate.

RESUMO

Activation and proliferation of cancer stem cells exert an important role in the invasion, metastasis, and recurrence of malignant tumors, including lung cancer. Therefore, exploring molecular targets related to self-renewal and mobility of lung cancer stem cells has important clinical significance. In our present study, we aimed to explore the effects of miR-138-5p on lung cancer stem-like cells and associated regulatory mechanism. In our present study, enhanced self-renewal capacity and elevated expression of cancer stem cells markers CD133, CD44, aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 of lung cancer stem-like cells derived from A549 cells were firstly verified. Then, obviously enhanced autophagy was found in lung cancer stem-like cells compared with parental cells A549. Besides, we found that enhanced autophagy induced by rapamycin promoted self-renewal and cell mobility of lung cancer stem-like cells and suppression of autophagy by 3-methyladenine exerted just opposite effects. In addition, miR-138-5p was found to be downregulated in lung cancer stem-like cells compared with that in parental cell A549. At the same time, overexpression of miR-138-5p by transfected with miR-138-5p mimic was found to effectively suppress self-renewal and invasion of lung cancer stem-like cells. Further study revealed that ATG7 was a target of miR-138-5p and overexpressed miR-138-5p suppressed ATG7-mediated autophagy. In addition, specific small interference RNA-ATG7 strengthened the inhibiting effect of miR-138-5p mimic on self-renewal and invasion of lung cancer stem-like cells. Taken together, we found that autophagy helped to maintain self-renewal and invasion ability of lung cancer stem-like cells and overexpressed miR-138-5p exerted anti-tumor effects by blocking the self-renewal and invasion of lung cancer stem-like cells through suppressing ATG7-mediated autophagy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: As studies on mental disorders in victims of occupational injury or disease are limited, this study aims to evaluate the risk of, and factors associated with, the development of mental illness in patients with occupational injury or disease using insurance claims data from Taiwan. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed insurance records in Taiwan to identify 18,285 adults who experienced occupational injury or disease in 2002-2013 and 18,285 adults without occupational injury or disease who were matched by propensity score. The risks of mental disorders during a follow-up period of up to 2 years were estimated and compared between the two cohorts. RESULTS: After controlling for other variables, the odds of mental illness in patients with occupational injury or disease was significantly higher compared to patients without occupational injury or disease. Additional factors associated with higher odds of mental disorders included female gender, age ≥ 30 years (vs. 20-29 years), Charlson comorbidity index ≥ 1, occupation category of labor union member, soldier, insured by social security, religious group member (vs. private or government employee), lower premium-based monthly salary (≤ 576 US$), treatment at a district hospital or clinic (vs. medical center), treatment at a publically-owned or consortium-owned hospital (vs. private hospital), and central or southeast geographic location (vs. Taipei). The main types of mental illness were anxiety disorder (2.79%) and other psychoses (3.29%). CONCLUSION: The risk of mental illness slightly increased during the 2-year period after the diagnosis of occupational injury or disease.
