RESUMO

A contribution to the use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was made for bioactive compounds recovery, especially those with lipophilic character, from tomato and carrot samples rich in carotenoids. For the first time, a novel deep eutectic solvent was synthesized, comprising tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a hydrogen bond acceptor and acetic acid (AcOH) as a hydrogen bond donor. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of tomato and carrot extracts obtained by MAE, in which optimization of operational parameters and modeling were made with the use of Box-Behnken design of the response surface methodology (RSM), was evaluated using the Cupric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity (CUPRAC) method. For the highest TAC, operational parameters that best suit the MAE procedure were set at 80 °C, 35 min, and 25 mL/2.0 g. The TAC values of extracts obtained by MAE using TBP:AcOH, 1:2 (mol/mol) were examined against those of extracts acquired by classical solvent extraction using a mixture of hexane, ethanol and acetone (H:E:A, 2:1:1 (v/v/v)) mixture. TAC of extracts in DES varied between 5.10 and 0.71 lycopene equivalents (mmol LYC kg-1). The highest extraction yield comparable to conventional organic solvents was obtained with TBP:AcOH (1:2). It was observed that, in addition to lipophilic antioxidants, some hydrophilic antioxidant compounds were partially extracted with the proposed DES. Moreover, the extracted antioxidant compounds were identified and quantified by HPLC analysis. The proposed DES and MAE process will find potential application for hydrophobic antioxidant extraction from tomatoes and carrots on an industrial scale after further studies.

ChatGPT's role in creating multiple-choice questions (MCQs) is growing but the validity of these artificial-intelligence-generated questions is unclear. This literature review was conducted to address the urgent need for understanding the application of ChatGPT in generating MCQs for medical education. Following the database search and screening of 1920 studies, we found 23 relevant studies. We extracted the prompts for MCQ generation and assessed the validity evidence of MCQs. The findings showed that prompts varied, including referencing specific exam styles and adopting specific personas, which align with recommended prompt engineering tactics. The validity evidence covered various domains, showing mixed accuracy rates, with some studies indicating comparable quality to human-written questions, and others highlighting differences in difficulty and discrimination levels, alongside a significant reduction in question creation time. Despite its efficiency, we highlight the necessity of careful review and suggest a need for further research to optimize the use of ChatGPT in question generation. Main messages  Ensure high-quality outputs by utilizing well-designed prompts; medical educators should prioritize the use of detailed, clear ChatGPT prompts when generating MCQs. Avoid using ChatGPT-generated MCQs directly in examinations without thorough review to prevent inaccuracies and ensure relevance. Leverage ChatGPT's potential to streamline the test development process, enhancing efficiency without compromising quality.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to describe the comprehensive morphological and morphometric features of the foramina and canals at the base of the cranial cavity in Holstein cow using CT images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed on fourteen adult Holstein cow head cadavers. Images taken with MSCT were transferred to the DICOM Viewer program. The MPR and 3D reconstructive tools of the program were used to analyse the foramina and canals. RESULTS: Although they varied in shape and size, foramina and canals were found bilaterally in all animals. It was observed that the orbitorotund foramen, jugular foramen and oval foramen had a canalicular structure, with the distance between the extra-intra cranial openings measured as 15.0 mm, 5.9 mm and 6.2 mm, respectively. The hypoglossal canal, which was found to be single in 43%, double in 50% and triple in 7% in each body half, was the canal with the most variation in number and shape. The orbitorotund foramen, a canal with an area of 180.6 mm² and a diameter of 18.1 × 12.4 mm is the widest at the skull base, while the optic canal is the narrowest and longest opening with an area of 33.4 mm², a diameter of 8.4 × 5.5 and a length of 17.5 mm. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that our knowledge of skull base morphometry in animals is extremely limited. Although the study was conducted on a limited number of materials, it may benefit both regional anatomy knowledge in terms of the data presented and veterinary anatomists, radiologists and clinicians in terms of methodology.

Subdural hematoma is defined as blood collection in the subdural space between the dura mater and arachnoid. Subdural hematoma is a condition that neurosurgeons frequently encounter and has acute, subacute and chronic forms. The incidence in adults is reported to be 1.72-20.60/100.000 people annually. Our study aimed to evaluate the quality, reliability and readability of the answers to questions asked to ChatGPT, Bard, and perplexity about "Subdural Hematoma." In this observational and cross-sectional study, we asked ChatGPT, Bard, and perplexity to provide the 100 most frequently asked questions about "Subdural Hematoma" separately. Responses from both chatbots were analyzed separately for readability, quality, reliability and adequacy. When the median readability scores of ChatGPT, Bard, and perplexity answers were compared with the sixth-grade reading level, a statistically significant difference was observed in all formulas (P < .001). All 3 chatbot responses were found to be difficult to read. Bard responses were more readable than ChatGPT's (P < .001) and perplexity's (P < .001) responses for all scores evaluated. Although there were differences between the results of the evaluated calculators, perplexity's answers were determined to be more readable than ChatGPT's answers (P < .05). Bard answers were determined to have the best GQS scores (P < .001). Perplexity responses had the best Journal of American Medical Association and modified DISCERN scores (P < .001). ChatGPT, Bard, and perplexity's current capabilities are inadequate in terms of quality and readability of "Subdural Hematoma" related text content. The readability standard for patient education materials as determined by the American Medical Association, National Institutes of Health, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services is at or below grade 6. The readability levels of the responses of artificial intelligence applications such as ChatGPT, Bard, and perplexity are significantly higher than the recommended 6th grade level.

Background: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the most common obstructive diseases. Based on the similarities, we aimed to evaluate sinonasal symptoms in patients with asthma or COPD, and compare the two diseases with regard to upper-airway involvement. Methods: Patients with asthma or with COPD who were followed up at Ankara University Immunology and Allergy or Chest Diseases Departments were included in the study. The participants went through pulmonary function tests, skin-prick tests, and disease severity assessment of either disease. Nasal endoscopic evaluations of all the patients were performed in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Lund-Mackay scoring was performed on the computed tomography of the paranasal sinus. Chronic rinosinusitis (CRS) diagnosis was made as recent guidelines. Results: A total of 112 subjects (number of women/men: n = 67/45; median age, 49 years [The range for IQR was 22 years]) were included in the study. Fifty-five patients had asthma, 33 had COPD, and 24 were healthy controls. Nasal symptoms were more frequent in the patients with asthma (patients with asthma, n = 52 [98%]; patients with COPD, n = 17 [52%]; controls, n = 9 [38%]) (p < 0.001). The median (IQR) 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) questionnaire score was higher in the patients with asthma (33 [20-50]) than in the patients with COPD (8 [1.5-18.7]) and the control group (3.5 [0-18.7]) (p < 0.01). Patients with asthma had significantly higher prevalence rates of rhinosinusitis than did those in the COPD and the control groups (36%, 15.6%, 8.3%, respectively; p < 0.01). The SNOT-22 optimal cutoff score was calculated as ≥11 to detect the score limit for CRS prediction with the best sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion: As a result, patients with both asthma and COPD may have upper-airway symptoms. CRS, was primarily seen in the patients with asthma. Accordingly, SNOT-22 scores were higher in the patients with asthma than in those in the COPD and the control groups. A referral to the Ear Nose Throat department for further evaluation with nasal endoscopy and computed tomography of the paranasal may be required in a subgroup of patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether preclinical medical students can develop their illness scripts to a level comparable to that of clerkship students through test-only learning using repeated formative online testlets. METHODS: In this experimental study, participants were 52 preclinical and 53 clinical medical students. The intervention group consisted of preclinical medical students, and the control group consisted of clinical medical students. The intervention group responded to online testlets containing feedback, an innovative formative assessment method called ContExtended Questions, on general surgery for 8 days by spending no more than 30 minutes each day. The control group completed the general surgery clerkship. The performances were assessed using 20 Key-Feature Question items. The intervention group was assessed twice: immediately after the intervention (the immediate test), and again 1 month later (the delayed test). The control group was assessed once, immediately after the clerkship. All performance tests were identical. RESULTS: The preclinical students had a significantly higher mean score on the immediate test (83.1 ± 9.6) compared to the clinical students (75.4 ± 8.9), P < .001. The effect size (Cohen's d) was .83. However, the mean score in the delayed test (76.9 ± 13.6) was not significantly different from clinical students' mean score (75.4 ± 8.9), P > .05. CONCLUSIONS: Test-only learning as a spaced repetition of online formative testlets is effective in preparing preclinical medical students to the clinical clerkship. Through using this approach in preclinical period, they can prepare themselves for the clinical environment to optimize the benefits derived from clerkships.

OBJECTIVE: The homogeneous distribution of physicians is important for ensuring patients' access to health services. To encourage physicians to work in underserved areas, policymakers create incentives. Understanding physicians' employment preferences is essential when developing these incentive packages. This study aims to quantitatively reveal the preferences of cardiologists in Türkiye using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). METHODS: A DCE questionnaire was distributed electronically to all cardiologists in Türkiye. It included 14 different pairs of hypothetical job offers based on seven parameters likely to influence their employment preferences. The data were analyzed using a conditional logit model. The coefficients (CEs) of conditional logistic regression and the willingness-to-accept (WTA) values were calculated. RESULTS: The analysis included 278 cardiologists. It revealed that the most influential parameter was location (CE: 2.86). To move to an undesirable location, the average participant would require an earnings increase of at least 123.3% relative to the average potential earnings of a cardiologist. Other parameters included availability of suitable facilities (CE: 1.07, WTA: 46.3%), harmony with co-workers (CE: 0.92, WTA: 39.61%), working conditions (CE: 0.68, WTA: 29.26%), and the number of night shifts (CE: 0.61, WTA: 26.34%). CONCLUSION: 'Location' emerged as the most important factor in the employment preferences of cardiologists in Türkiye. However, several other monetary and non-monetary factors were also influential, suggesting that policymakers should adopt a holistic approach when developing incentives for cardiologists.

Concept Development [CD] in the early years cannot be complete without teachers' support. However, limited research exists. This research aimed to assess CD classroom interactional quality and its relationship with other quality dimensions/domains and children's overall development using the data collected in State Pre-K/Head Start classrooms with Pre-K CLASS and LAP-3. Data collected from 171 classrooms underwent analysis with Python and SPSS. Pre-K CLASS scores showed that with the exception of one high-quality classroom, all other classrooms were categorized as either mid-quality or low-quality CD. Moreover, most teachers showed lower interactional quality not only in the CD dimension but also in the Quality of Feedback [QF] and Language Modeling [LM] dimensions of Instructional Support [IS], than in the dimensions of Emotional Support [ES] and Classroom Organization [CO] domains. The results indicated that CD, QF, and LM quality dimensions did not differ across the classrooms or districts. However, ES, CO, and IS domains differed significantly. While the observed differences for ES and CO were similar between the two districts, District 1 had higher mean IS scores than District 2. Furthermore, LAP-3 scores of 2514 children showed that 26.7 % of children scored below the expected level in cognitive development and 35.5 % scored below in language development by the end of the school year, with a higher proportion of male children falling in this category. Nonetheless, children attending State Pre-K/Head Start classrooms demonstrated an average gain of 4 months beyond their chronological age. The multi-level regression analysis of Pre-K CLASS and those LAP-3 scores showed no statistically significant relationship between interactional quality and children's developmental progress. Children in mid-quality CD classrooms showed slightly more progress in all areas of development, except in personal/social, compared to children in low-quality CD classrooms. Similarly, children in mid-quality IS classrooms outperformed those in low-quality IS classrooms in all LAP-3 areas except personal/social and pre-writing as well. In conclusion, the current research suggests that many teachers struggle not only to effectively provide high-quality CD teacher-child interactions but also high-quality IS teacher-child interactions in their classrooms. Comprehensive in-service training on CD and an alternative assessment tool that extends beyond the 72-month age limit are strongly recommended. This is important to ensure that teachers are equipped with the necessary skills and motivation to provide high-quality education to young children to prevent developmental delays in children.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the real-life performance of clinical vignettes and multiple-choice questions generated by using ChatGPT. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled study in an evidence-based medicine training program. We randomly assigned seventy-four medical students to two groups. The ChatGPT group received ill-defined cases generated by ChatGPT, while the control group received human-written cases. At the end of the training, they evaluated the cases by rating 10 statements using a Likert scale. They also answered 15 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) generated by ChatGPT. The case evaluations of the two groups were compared. Some psychometric characteristics (item difficulty and point-biserial correlations) of the test were also reported. RESULTS: None of the scores in 10 statements regarding the cases showed a significant difference between the ChatGPT group and the control group (p > .05). In the test, only six MCQs had acceptable levels (higher than 0.30) of point-biserial correlation, and five items could be considered acceptable in classroom settings. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the quality of the vignettes are comparable to those created by human authors, and some multiple-questions have acceptable psychometric characteristics. ChatGPT has potential in generating clinical vignettes for teaching and MCQs for assessment in medical education.

BACKGROUND: To compare dentofacial effects of distalization with miniscrew-supported pendulum and infrazygomatic crest miniscrews. METHODS: The study included 36 patients whose lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained before (T0) and after (T1) distalization. Patients were divided into two groups according to the treatment methods: 1) distalization with miniscrew-supported pendulum (MSP) (n = 19; 14 girls and 5 boys; mean age 16.9 ± 1.46 years) and 2) distalization with infrazygomatic crest (IZC) miniscrews (n = 17; 8 girls and 9 boys; mean age 17.0 ± 1.68 years). Dental, skeletal and soft tissue measurements were performed on lateral cephalograms taken from individuals. RESULTS: A significant molar distalization was achieved both in the MSP group (3.52 ± 0.76 mm at 8.71 ± 2.02 months) and the IZC group (3.5 ± 0.74 mm at 9.7 ± 2.5 months) (P < 0.001 for both). Premolar distalization was significantly lower in the MSP group (1.73 ± 1.09 mm) than in the IZC group (2.81 ± 0.79 mm) (P < 0.01). Significant molar tipping was observed in both groups (P < 0.001), while no significant difference was found between the groups (P > 0.05). Retrusion of maxillary incisors were significantly higher in the IZC group (2.75 mm) than in the MSP group (0.98 mm) (P < 0.01). A significant difference was found between the two groups with regard to the changes in overjet and overbite (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both distalization methods were found to be effective in achieving a Class I molar relationship in patients with Class II malocclusion.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence, specifically large language models such as ChatGPT, offers valuable potential benefits in question (item) writing. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of generating case-based multiple-choice questions using ChatGPT in terms of item difficulty and discrimination levels. METHODS: This study involved 99 fourth-year medical students who participated in a rational pharmacotherapy clerkship carried out based-on the WHO 6-Step Model. In response to a prompt that we provided, ChatGPT generated ten case-based multiple-choice questions on hypertension. Following an expert panel, two of these multiple-choice questions were incorporated into a medical school exam without making any changes in the questions. Based on the administration of the test, we evaluated their psychometric properties, including item difficulty, item discrimination (point-biserial correlation), and functionality of the options. RESULTS: Both questions exhibited acceptable levels of point-biserial correlation, which is higher than the threshold of 0.30 (0.41 and 0.39). However, one question had three non-functional options (options chosen by fewer than 5% of the exam participants) while the other question had none. CONCLUSIONS: The findings showed that the questions can effectively differentiate between students who perform at high and low levels, which also point out the potential of ChatGPT as an artificial intelligence tool in test development. Future studies may use the prompt to generate items in order for enhancing the external validity of the results by gathering data from diverse institutions and settings.

WHAT IS THE EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGE?: A fundamental challenge in medical education is creating high-quality, clinically relevant multiple-choice questions (MCQs). ChatGPT-based automatic item generation (AIG) methods need well-designed prompts. However, the use of these prompts is hindered by the time-consuming process of copying and pasting, a lack of know-how among medical teachers, and the generalist nature of standard ChatGPT, which often lacks the medical context. WHAT ARE THE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS?: The Case-based MCQ Generator, a custom GPT, addresses these challenges. It has been trained by using GPT Builder, which is a platform designed by OpenAI for customizing ChatGPT to meet specific needs, in order to allow users to generate case-based MCQs. By using this free tool for those who have ChatGPT Plus subscription, health professions educators can easily select a prompt, input a learning objective or item-specific test point, and generate clinically relevant questions. WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO A WIDER GLOBAL AUDIENCE?: It enhances the efficiency of MCQ generation and ensures the generation of contextually relevant questions, surpassing the capabilities of standard ChatGPT. It streamlines the MCQ creation process by integrating prompts published in medical education literature, eliminating the need for manual prompt input. WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?: Future development aims at sustainability and addressing ethical and accessibility issues. It requires regular updates, integration of new prompts from emerging health professions education literature, and a supportive digital ecosystem around the tool. Accessibility, especially for educators in low-resource countries, is vital, demanding alternative access models to overcome financial barriers.

The purity of the seeds is one of the important factors that increase the yield. For this reason, the classification of maize cultivars constitutes a significant problem. Within the scope of this study, six different classification models were designed to solve this problem. A special dataset was created to be used in the models designed for the study. The dataset contains a total of 14,469 images in four classes. Images belong to four different maize types, BT6470, CALIPOS, ES_ARMANDI, and HIVA, taken from the BIOTEK company. AlexNet and ResNet50 architectures, with the transfer learning method, were used in the models created for the image classification. In order to improve the classification success, LSTM (Directional Long Short-Term Memory) and BiLSTM (Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory) algorithms and AlexNet and ResNet50 architectures were hybridized. As a result of the classifications, the highest classification success was obtained from the ResNet50+BiLSTM model with 98.10%.

AIM: Although there are many scales that measure stigma, there is no scale with the necessary adequacy to measure stigma in the perinatal period. The study aims to develop the stigma scale for women with mental illness in the perinatal period and test its validity and reliability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were reached via patients, visitors, and hospital staff who applied to Sakarya Training and Research Hospital between 01/06/2022 and 01/12/2022. Two hundred people (female n = 134, male n = 66) aged 18-65 participated in the study and "Sociodemographic data form," "Perinatal Mental Illness Stigma Scale (PMISS)," "Social Distance Scale," and "Beliefs Towards Mental Illness Scale" were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22 and the AMOS 26 program. RESULTS: The Content Validity Index of the scale items was between 0.80-1. Cronbach's alpha coefficient score of the general scale was 0.94, the "Discrimination and Prejudice" sub-dimension was 0.93, and the "Labeling" sub-dimension was 0.88. It was determined that item-total score correlations varied between 0.410 and 0.799. P value calculated < 0.05 in Barlett's test and 0.94 in the Kaiser-Meyer Olkin test. These values show that factor analysis can be applied to the scale. According to the Exploratory Factor Analysis result, the scale has a 2-factor structure, explaining 60% of the total variance. The Guttman Split-Half coefficient of the scale was 0.882, and the Spearman-Brown coefficient was 0.883. The scale was reapplied to 30 participants with an interval of three weeks. The correlation coefficient between the two measurements was 0.91, indicating that the scale satisfies the invariance principle over time. CONCLUSION: The PMISS is a reliable measurement tool that can be used to investigate stigma towards mental illness during the perinatal period in the Turkish population.

BACKGROUND: Anatomy is a crucial part of medical education, and there have been attempts to improve this field by utilizing various methods. With the advancement of technology, three-dimensional (3D) materials have gained popularity and become a matter of debate about their effectiveness compared to two-dimensional (2D) sources. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of 3D PDFs compared to 2D atlases. METHODS: This study is a randomized controlled trial involving 87 Year-1 and Year-2 medical students at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Turkey. The study was conducted in two steps. In Step-1, students were randomized to watch lecture videos on liver anatomy and male genitalia anatomy supplemented with either a 3D PDF (intervention group) or 2D atlas (control group) images. Following the video lectures, a test (immediate test) was administered. In Step-2, the same test (delayed test) was administered 10 days after the immediate test. The test scores were compared between the intervention and control groups. In addition to the descriptive analyses, Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed. RESULTS: In the immediate test, while there was no significant difference between the groups for the liver test (p > 0.05), 3D PDF group's scores (Median = 24.50) was significantly higher than the 2D atlas group's in the genitalia test (Median = 21.00), (p = 0.017). The effect size (Cohen's d) was 0.57. In the delayed test, there was no significant difference between the groups in the liver and genitalia tests (p > 0.05). However, the effect size in the immediate genitalia test was 0.40. Year-1 students' immediate test of genitalia performances were significantly higher in the 3D PDF group (Median = 24.00) than the 2D atlas group (Median = 19.00), (p = 0.016). The effect size was 0.76. Also, Year-1 students' 3D PDF group (Median = 20.50) presented with significantly higher performance than the 2D atlas group (Median = 12.00), (p = 0.044) in the delayed test of genitalia, with the 0.63 effect size. CONCLUSION: 3D PDF is more effective than 2D atlases in teaching anatomy, especially to initial learners. It is particularly useful for teaching complex anatomical structures, such as male genitalia, compared to the liver. Hence, it may be a valuable tool for medical teachers to utilize during lectures.

This study aims to answer the question "Are voting behaviours of postgraduate students, a voter group who are politically educated and well-informed about voting behaviours, affected by socio-psychological factors?." In particular, if so, it also aims to reveal which socio-psychological factors affect their voting behaviours. The Q-methodology is utilised in this study. The main reason for this methodological preference is that the Q-methodology is a good tool for systematically identifying and examining a particular group's subjective views that are held around the factors shaping and affecting their voting behaviours by providing factor loadings. Factor loadings, or the cluster of participants, allow us better to illustrate each participant's association with each of the identified socio-psychological or otherwise factors, similar or different orders of ranking by the participants, to detect individual differences, and, therefore, to indicate (1) whether the socio-psychological factors affect the voting behaviours of the participants, and (2) if so, which socio-psychological factor(s) affects most. This also helps us to conclude that the participants who are mostly associated with one or more factors have similar voting behaviours corresponding to or in opposition to the assumptions of the socio-psychological approach. The participants of the research are 57 postgraduate students studying Political Science and Public Administration at Akdeniz University. The results of the research indicate that most of the participants cluster around two separate factors: while the participants gathered under Factor 1 take their political decisions more rationally and are ready to vote for alternative candidates and political parties in different elections, those who load under Factor 2 are affected by some socio-psychological factors: loyalty to her family's (the family factor) and inner circles' political preferences (the inner circle factor), and a long-term commitment and an emotional attachment to a political party and/or the candidate (the time factor). The voting behaviours of the participants gathered under no factors are, however, affected by relatively mixed factors. In addition, it is also revealed that the titles that most differentiate the preferences of the participants cluster around both Factors 1 and 2 are family, education, and rationality.

Multi-electrode recording of neural activity in cultures offer opportunities for understanding how the structure of a network gives rise to function. Although it is hypothesized that network size is critical for determining the dynamics of activity, this relationship in human neural cultures remains largely unexplored. By applying new methods for analyzing neural activity to human iPSC derived cultures at either low-densities or high-densities, we uncovered the significant impacts that neuron number has on the individual neurophysiological properties of cells (such as firing rates), the collective behavior of the networks these cultures formed (as measured by entropy), and the relationship between the two. As a result, simply changing the densities of neurons generated dynamics and network behavior that differed not just in degree, but in kind. Beyond revealing the relationship between network structure and function, our findings provide a novel analytical framework to study diseases where network level activity is affected.

Objective The aim of this study is to compare preoperative and postoperative radiological results in knees with medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRT) and varus alignment, with a particular emphasis on medial meniscal extrusion (MME), following high tibial osteotomy (HTO) without root repair. Method Patients who underwent open wedge HTO for medial compartment osteoarthritis between January 2015 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The inclusion criteria were defined as patients with preoperative and postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and weight-bearing radiographs including radiological images of the entire lower extremity. After conducting data screenings, patients diagnosed with a preoperative MMPRT were included in the study. Patients underwent measurements of medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), mechanical lateral distal femoral angle (mLDFA), and mechanical axis deviation (MAD) on anteroposterior radiographs encompassing the entire lower extremity during the preoperative and postoperative first year. In order to determine the degree of arthritis, The Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system was employed on preoperative and the most recent anteroposterior knee radiographs of the patients. MME, the distance (in millimeters) between the peripheral border of the meniscus body (meniscocapsular junction) and the medial border of the tibial plateau, was measured and calculated on coronal MRI. Preoperative and postoperative measurements of MPTA, MAD, MME, and KL staging were compared. Results The study included a total of 21 patients, comprising 7 males and 14 females. Among these, 6 were left-sided and 15 were right-sided cases, with an average age of 52.2 (±6.1) years. The mean follow-up duration for the patients was 5.4 (±2.3) years, with an average time of 2.2 (±1.6) years from surgery to the MRI. While significant differences were observed between preoperative and postoperative measurements for MAD and MPTA (p <0.01), no significant difference was found in MME measurement (p: 0.507). Pearson correlation analysis was employed to determine the correlation between preoperative and postoperative values of MME, MPTA, and MAD. A significant negative correlation was observed between preoperative MME and MPTA (r: -0.464, p:0.034). No significant correlation was found between postoperative MME and MAD or MPTA. Comparisons based on KL staging between the preoperative and postoperative periods did not reveal any significant differences (p: 0.525). Conclusion In knees with both MMPRT and varus alignment, our study demonstrated that postoperative MME and radiological progression of arthritis did not increase after HTO without MMPRT repair. These findings suggest that HTO treatment performed without MMPRT repair may prevent an increase in MME and the progression of arthritis. According to the results of our study, we observed a negative correlation between MME and MPTA during the preoperative period, which supports the relationship between varus deformity and MME.
