BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) poses a significant challenge for physicians, necessitating the management of cell damage and the preservation of organ functions. Various surgical procedures, such as vascular surgery on extremities, temporary cross-clamping of the abdominal aorta in aortic surgery, and the use of a tourniquet in extremity surgeries, may induce lower limb IRI. The susceptibility to IRI is heightened in individuals with diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fullerenol C60 and sevoflurane on mouse muscle tissue in a lower limb IRI model and to assess their potential in preventing complications arising from ischemia-reperfusion in mice with streptozocin-induced diabetes. METHODS: A total of 36 adult Swiss albino mice were randomly divided into six groups, each consisting of six mice: control group (group C), diabetes group (group D), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion group (group DIR), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-fullerenol C60 group (group DIR-FC60), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-sevoflurane group (group DIR-S), and diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-sevoflurane-fullerenol C60 group (DIR-S-FC60). Streptozocin (55 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered to induce diabetes in the relevant groups, with mice displaying blood glucose levels of 250 mg/dL or higher at 72 h were considered diabetic. After 4 weeks, all groups underwent laparotomy under anesthesia. In DIR-FC60 and DIR-S-FC60 groups, fullerenol C60 (100 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administrated 30 min before the ischemia period. Sevoflurane, delivered in 100% oxygen at a rate of 2.3% and 4 L/min, was administered during the ischemia period in DIR-S and DIR-S-FC60 groups. In the IR groups, a microvascular clamp was placed on the infrarenal abdominal aorta for 120 min during the ischemia period, followed by the removal of the clamp and a 120-min reperfusion period. At the end of the reperfusion, gastrocnemius muscle tissues were removed for histopathological and biochemical parameter examinations. RESULTS: Histopathological examination revealed a significant reduction in the disorganization and degeneration of muscle cells in the DIR-S-FC60 group compared to the DIR group (p = 0.041). Inflammatory cell infiltration was notably lower in the DIR-S, DIR-FC60, and DIR-S-FC60 groups than in the DIR group (p = 0.031, p = 0.011, and p = 0.013, respectively). The total damage scores in the DIR-FC60 and DIR-S-FC60 groups were significantly lower than in the DIR group (p = 0.018 and p = 0.008, respectively). Furthermore, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the DIR-S, DIR-FC60, and DIR-S-FC60 groups were significantly lower than in the DIR group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). Catalase (CAT) enzyme activity in the DIR-S, DIR-FC60, and DIR-S-FC60 groups was higher than in the DIR group (p = 0.001, p = 0.014, and p < 0.001, respectively). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity in the DIR-FC60 and DIR-S-FC60 groups was also higher than in the DIR group (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that administering fullerenol C60 30 min prior to ischemia in diabetic mice, in combination with sevoflurane, led to a reduction in oxidative stress and the correction of IR-related damage in muscle tissue histopathology. We believe that the administration of fullerenol C60 before IR, coupled with sevoflurane administration during IR, exerts a protective effect in mice.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome that develops in the host against microorganisms. This response develops away from the primary infection site and results in end-organ damage. The present study aimed to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects on lung and kidney tissue of silymarin (S) and dexmedetomidine (DEX) applied 1 h before and after sepsis induced by the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) method in rats. A total of 62 rats was randomly divided into eight groups: i) Control (n=6); ii) cecal perforation (CLP; n=8); iii) S + CLP (n=8; S + CLP; S administered 1 h before CPL); iv) CLP + S (n=8; S administered 1 h after CLP); v) DEX + CLP (n=8; D + CLP; DEX administered 1 h before CLP); vi) CLP + D (n=8; DEX administered 1 h after CLP); vii) SD + CLP (n=8; S and DEX administered 1 h before CLP) and viii) CLP + SD (n=8; S and DEX administered 1 h after CLP). After the cecum filled with stool, it was tied with 3/0 silk under the ileocecal valve and the anterior surface of the cecum was punctured twice with an 18-gauge needle. A total of 100 mg/kg silymarin and 100 µg/kg DEX were administered intraperitoneally to the treatment groups. Lung and kidney tissue samples were collected to evaluate biochemical and histopathological parameters. In the histopathological examination, all parameters indicating kidney injury; interstitial edema, peritubular capillary dilatation, vacuolization, ablation of tubular epithelium from the basement membrane, loss of brush border in the proximal tubule epithelium, cell swelling and nuclear defragmentation; were increased in the CLP compared with the control group. Silymarin administration increased kidney damage, including ablation of tubular epithelium from the basement membrane, compared with that in the CLP group. DEX significantly reduced kidney damage compared with the CLP and silymarin groups. The co-administration of DEX + silymarin decreased kidney damage, although it was not as effective as DEX-alone. To conclude, intraperitoneal DEX ameliorated injury in CLP rats. DEX + silymarin partially ameliorated injury but silymarin administration increased damage. As a result, silymarin has a negative effects with this dosage and DEX has a protective effect. In the present study, it was determined that using the two drugs together had a greater therapeutic effect than silymarin and no differences in the effects were not observed any when the application times of the agents were changed.

This study aimed to evaluate whether the Pediatric Dysphagia Risk Screening Instrument (PDRSI) was a suitable test for children with cerebral palsy (CP) and assess the instrument's Turkish validity and reliability. One-hundred twenty-six children with CP participated in this study. "Cronbach's alpha (ɑ)," "Cronbach's ɑ when one item is deleted," "inter-item correlation," and "corrected item-to-total correlation" were used to assess internal consistency. In addition, inter-rater agreement tests (Cohen's kappa coefficient) were conducted for reliability. Construct validity was used to assess the validity. Moreover, flexible fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of the swallowing method was used to describe the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and calculate the sensitivity and specificity of T-PDRSI. It was found that the PDRSI had adequate validity and reliability. The PDRSI can be used in children with CP as a valid and reliable instrument with high sensitivity and specificity.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of fullerenol C60 on lung and kidney tissue in sevoflurane­treated rats with lower extremity ischemia­reperfusion (IR) injury. A total of 30 Wistar albino rats weighing 225­275 g were used and were equally divided into five groups (n=6/group): i) Sham; ii) IR; iii) IR­fullerenol C60 (IR­FUL); iv) IR­sevoflurane; and v) IR­fullerenol C60­sevoflurane (IR­FUL­SEVO). Fullerenol C60 was administered intraperitoneally prior to lower extremity IR induction and sevoflurane was administered during the IR injury. Subsequently, lung and kidney histopathological examinations, and serum biochemical analyses were performed. Lung tissue showed markedly increased congestion and neutrophil infiltration in the IR group compared with in the sham group, and notable decreases in congestion and neutrophil infiltration were observed in the treatment groups compared with in the IR group. In the histopathological evaluation of the kidney samples, vacuolization, loss of brush border in tubular epithelial cells, tubular epithelial loss and varying degrees of tubular damage were observed in all groups that underwent IR. There was a significant increase in the mean renal tubule injury score in all IR groups compared with that in the sham group. In addition, the mean kidney injury score was significantly lower in the IR­FUL and IR­FUL­SEVO groups than that in the IR group. It was observed that the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor­α, interleukin 1ß and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in the lung and kidney tissues were increased following IR, and were decreased in the groups treated with fullerenol C60 and sevoflurane. Notably, it was determined that the reduction in cytokine expression was greatest in the IR­FUL group. When the oxidant status parameters in the lungs and kidneys were examined, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances levels, and catalase and glutathione S­transferase enzyme activities were significantly different in the groups receiving sevoflurane or fullerenol C60 treatment compared with those in the IR group. The present study demonstrated the protective effects of fullerenol C60 on the lung and kidney tissues of rats under sevoflurane anesthesia after establishment of lower extremity IR. The results of the present study showed that fullerenol C60 can reduce oxidative and histopathological damage in the lungs and kidneys following IR of the lower extremities.

Aim: The aim of our study is to show whether the administration of hydrogen-rich saline solution (HRSS) intraperitoneally before left main coronary artery (LAD) ischemia protects the myocardium against ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Materials and methods: After ethics committee approval, 24 Wistar Albino rats were divided into 4 groups, 6 rats in each group. For experimental IR, myocardial ischemia was performed by LAD ligation. Left thoracotomy was performed without ischemia in the Control group (Group C). Left thoracotomy was performed without myocardial ischemia to the rats in the HRSS group, and HRSS was given intraperitoneally (ip) at a rate of 10 ml/kg throughout the procedure. In the MIR-HRSS group, a single dose of 10 ml/kg HRSS was administered 5 min before reperfusion. Histopathological and biochemical parameters were compared in myocardial tissue samples taken at the end of the reperfusion period. Results: When the groups were compared among themselves in terms of TOS and TAS levels, there was a significant difference between the groups (p = 0.006, p = 0.002). The severity of cardiomyocyte degeneration was significantly greater in MIR group than that in the control and HRSS groups (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001, respectively), as well as severity score of cardiomyocyte degeneration was higher in MIR-HRSS group compared with HRSS group (p = 0.035). Conclusion: Our study shows that HRSS is protective in IR injury, with the application of HRSS 5 min before reperfusion, interstitial edema severity, subendocardial haemorrhage are reduced, and oxidant status parameters are increased, while antioxidant status parameters are decreased. We believe that when it is supported by other studies, the protective effects of HRSS on IR damage will be shown in detail and its indications will be expanded.

Topiramate (TPM), a carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor, is known for its anti-obesity effect. Even though, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is present in 80% of obese patients, TPM's effects on oxidant-antioxidant parameters and CA activity on fatty liver is not known. 24 Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: control, TPM, diet, and diet + TPM. Diet groups fed with high-fat diet while control and TPM groups received standard chow for six weeks. Than 100 mg/kg/day TPM (po) was added to TPM groups for 21 days. Rats' weight and blood glucose levels were monitored weekly, and at the end of the study liver removed for biochemical and histological analysis. TPM eliminated the increases in weight and blood glucose levels caused by high-fat diet. TPM decreased CA activity in all groups. MDA levels increased significantly in TPM and DT groups (p = 0.004; p = 0.008). GSH levels were decreased in the TPM, D and DT groups (p = 0.004; p = 0.015; p = 0.003). Similarly, GPx activity levels were significantly decreased in all groups. Histological evaluation revealed notable infiltration, eosinophilia and cytoplasmic vacuolization in the TPM group. Steatosis and NAFLD activity score (NAS) were higher in the diet group. Ballooning, infiltration and NAS were higher in the diet + TPM group compared to control. CA activity negatively correlated with MDA (p < 0.001), and positively correlated with GSH (p < 0.001). TPM caused oxidant stress and liver damage, which are exacerbated in NAFLD induced rats. Therefore, use of TPM in patients with liver disease should be considered very carefully.

Artemisinin (ARS) is well known as an effective agent in the treatment of malaria through the rapid elimination of Plasmodium falciparum parasites. This study aims to investigate the effect of ARS in treating adnexal torsion, one of the most common gynecological surgical emergencies. ARS was administered intraperitoneally once 30 min before unilateral ovarian torsion in two different doses (10 mg/kg vs. 50 mg/kg). Torsion was maintained for 3 h and then held in the detorted state for 3 h. Bilateral adnexectomy was performed to measure antioxidant enzyme activities and oxidant levels on the ipsilateral ovary and to make histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses on the contralateral ovary. Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury dramatically upregulated the activities of CAT, GST, and MDA levels in the ipsilateral ovary, which were all downregulated by ARS treatment. A significant increase in follicular cell degeneration, congestion, and edema in the contralateral ovary was seen in the I/R group, which was significantly reduced with ARS treatment. Furthermore, I/R injury resulted in a significant increase in apoptosis as shown by the increased levels of BAX and CASP-3, and decreased levels of BCL-2 whereas ARS significantly reduced the impact of the injury. Our data, based on a rat I/R injury model, show that both ipsilateral and contralateral ovaries are protected with ARS pretreatment, and 50 mg/kg ARS treatment demonstrates to be more effective than the 10 mg/kg ARS.

Introduction: Oxidative stress has an important role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common type of dementia. Boric acid (BA) contributes significantly to the protection of the brain by reducing lipid peroxidation and supporting antioxidant defense. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of BA treatment in AD rats. Materials and Methods: Four groups were formed as Control (C), Alzheimer's (A), Alzheimer's + Boric acid (ABA), Boric acid (BA). Intracerebroventricular injection of Streptozotocin (STZ) was preferred to create an AD. After 4 weeks, BA was applied 3 times every other day. The Radial Arm Maze Test (RAMT) was used to evaluate memory and learning abilities. Biochemical and histopathological evaluations were made in the hippocampus. Results: Initial RAMT inlet/outlet (I/O) numbers were similar. Two weeks after STZ injection, I/O numbers decreased in group A and ABA compared to group C and BA (p<0.05). After the second BA application, I/O numbers increased in the ABA group compared to the A group (p<0.05). In group A, PON-1, TOS and OSI levels were higher and TAS levels were lower than in groups BA and C. After BA treatment, PON-1 and OSI levels were lower in the ABA group than in the A group (p<0.05). Although there was an increase in TAS value and a decrease in TOS, this did not make a statistical difference. The thickness of the pyramidal cell in CA1 and the granular cell layers in the dentate gyrus, and the number of intact and degenerated neurons in the pyramidal cell layer were similar between the groups. Discussion: Significant improvement in learning and memory abilities after BA application is promising for AD. Conclusion: These results show that BA application positively affects learning and memory abilities, and reduces oxidative stress. More extensive studies are required to evaluate histopathological efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonographic evaluation of trigger points detected by physical examination in patients with myofascial pain syndrome is being used more frequently in clinical care. However, the sonographic appearance of trigger points, in association with pain and disability, has not been adequately described. OBJECTIVE: To reveal the presence of trigger points with ultrasonography in those with myofascial pain syndrome and to determine if ultrasound images can help discriminate between demographic and disease characteristics. METHODS: Fifty-two participants with chronic neck pain (NP) were in this cross-sectional study. The pain intensity was evaluated using a 0-10 cm visual analog scale (VAS). The neck disability index measured the NP-induced disability status of the participants. Ultrasonography was used to measure the thicknesses of the paraspinal muscles and the presence of hypoechoic areas within these muscles. RESULTS: There was a positive correlation between the VAS scores of the participants and the ultrasonographic detection of myofascial trigger points (MTPs) in the multifidus and middle trapezius muscles (right/left r = .30, p = .027; r = .29, p = .029; r = .32, p = .009, r = .30, p = .011, respectively). These features correlated with the disability levels of the participants and the MTPs on both the right and left sides of the splenius, multifidus, upper trapezius, and middle trapezius (r = .32, p = .028; r = .38, p = .013, r = .25, p = .027; r = .33, p = .016; r = .25, p = .025, r = .32, p = .018, r = .28, p = .013, r = .29, p = .016, respectively). A significant correlation was present between the detection of MTP at ultrasonography and decreased muscle thickness in the relevant muscles (between p = .001 and p = .034). CONCLUSION: The detection of MTPs with ultrasonography is associated with the severity of pain and disability in those with chronic NP. Features on ultrasound include hypoechoic changes within muscle and reduced muscle thickness associated with MTPs.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a geriatric syndrome. Changes in the whole body that occur with aging also affect swallowing functions and cause presbyphagia. This condition may progress to oropharyngeal and/or esophageal dysphagia in the presence of secondary causes that increase in incidence with aging. However, no study has been published that provides recommendations for use in clinical practice that addresses in detail all aspects of the management of dysphagia in geriatric individuals. This study aimed to answer almost all potential questions and problems in the management of geriatric dysphagia in clinical practice. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team created this recommendation guide using the seven-step and three-round modified Delphi method via e-mail. The study included 39 experts from 29 centers in 14 cities. RESULTS: Based on the 5W and 1H method, we developed 216 detailed recommendations for older adults from the perspective of different disciplines dealing with older people. CONCLUSION: This consensus-based recommendation is a useful guide to address practical clinical questions in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and follow-up for the management of geriatric dysphagia and also contains detailed commentary on these issues.

OBJECTIVE: With this study, it was aimed to investigate whether the thoracic muscle mass of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 was related to disease severity and disease characteristics and to evaluate whether muscle mass measurement had a predictive effect on predicting disease severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred twenty-three subjects (patient group = 161 and control = 62) who presented to our coronavirus disease 2019 outpatient clinic between May 2020 and September 2020 were included in the study. The medication, oxygen, and intubation requirements of the patients and their disease duration and hospital stay were also recorded. At the T4 level, thoracic and back (pectoralis, intercostalis, paraspinals, serratus, and latissimus dorsi) muscles and at the T12 level erector spinae muscles were measured in terms of area (cm2 ). RESULTS: T4-level muscle cross-sectional area results were found to be negatively correlated with the presence of pneumonia and the requirement of oxygen and intubation. In addition, both T4- and T12-level muscle cross-sectional area results were factors associated with oxygen and intubation requirements. T4-level muscle cross-sectional area results were also associated with the presence of pneumonia. CONCLUSION: We predict that there may be a relationship between the decrease in the mass of the accessory respiratory muscles and the severity of the disease.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to reveal the relationships between the cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the paraspinal muscles and the severity of low back pain (LBP), including the level of disability. METHODS: This single-center cross-sectional study was conducted on 164 patients with chronic LBP. The effects of demographic characteristics, posture, level of physical activity, disc herniation type, and sarcopenia risk on the CSAs of paraspinal muscles were evaluated along with the relationship between the CSAs and severity of pain and disability in all patients. The CSAs of paraspinal muscles were evaluated using the software program Image J 1.53. RESULTS: A negative significant correlation was found between age and the paraspinal muscle's CSA (P < 0.05), whereas a positive correlation was present between the level of physical activity and the CSA of the paraspinal muscle at the L2-3 and L3-4 levels. The CSAs of paraspinal muscles in patients with sarcopenia risk was significantly lower than those in patients without sarcopenia risk (P < 0.05). The CSAs of paraspinal muscles at the L2-3 and L3-4 levels in obese patients were significantly higher than those in overweight patients (P = 0.028, P = 0.026, respectively). There was no relationship between the CSAs of paraspinal muscles and pain intensity or disability. CONCLUSIONS: Although this study did not find a relationship between paraspinal CSAs and pain or disability, treatment regimens for preventing paraspinal muscles from atrophy may aid pain physicians in relieving pain, restoring function, and preventing recurrence in patients with chronic LBP.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in older adults. It has been reported in the literature that 11-68% of older adults experience swallowing difficulties. This study aimed to investigate the presence of dysphagia in older adults, whether this dysphagia is related to age (presbyphagia) or sarcopenia by comparing it with adults. Two hundred twenty-five patients were included in this cross-sectional study. The participants were divided into two groups by age as 'adults' and 'older adults'. Sarcopenia, dysphagia and malnutrition evaluations were performed. Older adult and adult groups were compared in terms of malnutrition, dysphagia and sarcopenia. The number of patients with dysphagia was significantly higher (P = 0.007) in the older adults. In older adults, all sarcopenic evaluation parameters were found significantly lower than adults (P < 0.05). The number of older adults with malnutrition was significantly lower in patients with normal swallowing (P < 0.05). The swallowing difficulty can be detected in older adults even if it does not cause any complaint. While most swallowing disorders may be due to age-related changes, about a third may be accompanied by sarcopenia.

Obesity is a health problem that can exacerbate the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). In the current study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a short-term exercise program on fatigue, depression, anxiety, and walking performance in normal-weight and overweight patients with MS (PwMS). Sixty-two PwMS were divided into groups according to their BMI (BMI normal/BMI high). Also, they were all included in the exercise program. The participants took a moderate-intensity walking program 5 days a week for 4 weeks, including 30 min between 5 min of warm-up and 5 min of cooling periods. Also, patients underwent breathing, posture, flexibility, and stretching exercises for 4 weeks. Fatigue, depression, anxiety, 6-minute walking test (6MWT), and BMI were measured before and after the 4 weeks. After the exercise program, there were statistically significant improvements in fatigue, depression, anxiety, and the 6MWT. However, no relation could be detected between the examined variables and BMI. All patients participated effectively in the exercise program, regardless of BMI. The results obtained from this study support that a short-term exercise program is an effective therapeutic intervention, unrelated to BMI, in improving fatigue, depression, anxiety, and walking performance in PwMS.

OBJECTIVE: Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hUC-MSCs) gained importance in acute/chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy because of their outstanding regenerative potential in various pathologic conditions. The present study was designed to determine to what extent hUC-MSCs contribute to myocardial regeneration in acute experimental myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. METHODS: Animals were assigned into two groups; the control group received intramyocardial PBS injections, while the hUC-MSC group received calcein-AM-labeled 8.8 × 106/kg hUC-MSCs. Three weeks following the acute MI induction, rats were sacrificed after assessing the left ventricular (LV) function using echocardiography. For the assessment of infarct size, the triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) test was used in isolated hearts. Collagen-rich scar tissue was demonstrated using Masson's trichrome staining, followed by the detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), α-sarcomeric actin (α-SA), von Willebrand factor (vWF), CD68 and CD206 expressions in control and cell-injected sections. RESULTS: Echocardiography revealed a significant difference (P = 0.037) in the LV ejection fraction between groups. TTC assays demonstrated a significant difference (P = 0.006) between the groups regarding the ratio of the infarcted LV area. Calcein-AM-loaded cells were identified mostly in ischemic myocardium. Transplanted cells also expressed human-specific cTnI, providing concrete proof of transdifferentiation into cardiomyocytes, and α-SA. vWF+ cells verified the neovascularization in the ischemic myocardium. Finally, a slight shift from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory macrophages (CD68+/CD206+) was noted in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the intramyocardial transplanted hUC-MSCs engrafted and partially transdifferentiated into cardiomyocytes, reduced scar formation, and induced angiogenesis through the association of pro/anti-inflammatory macrophages.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between the physical problems of children with CP and caregiving burden and the emotional expression characteristics of caregivers. METHODS: The study included 144 caregivers of child with cerebral palsy and Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and Expressed Emotion Scale (EES) will be applied to the caregivers who will participate in the study. Disease severity of children with cerebral palsy will be evaluated by the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) in children with cerebral palsy. Communication Function Classification System (CFCS) will be used to examine the communication of children with their families. RESULTS: Accordingly, a positive, statistically significant, moderate correlation was found between the GMFCS, MACS, and CFCS scores and ZBI scores in patients with cerebral palsy (r ~ 0.50; p < 0.01). In this study, a positive, statistically significant but weak correlation was found between GMFCS, MACS, and CFCS scores and EES scores in patients with cerebral palsy (r ~ 0.30; p < 0.01). A statistically significant, moderate correlation was found between ZBI and EES (r ~ 0.50; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: According to the results of our study, as motor skills and communication skills decrease, especially the burden of caregivers increases and the family's emotional expression processes are related to these variables. We think that in the long-term follow-up of children with CP, it may be useful to provide appropriate psychiatric support by evaluating caregivers appropriately.

PURPOSE: We aimed to determine whether varying the magnetic field during magnetic resonance imaging would affect the development of chicken embryos and neural tube defects. METHODS: Following incubation for 24 h, we exposed chicken embryos to varying magnetic fields for 10 min to assess the impact on development. Three magnetic resonance imaging devices were used, and the eggs were divided into four groups: group 1 is exposed to 1 T, group 2 is exposed to 1.5 T, group 3 is exposed to 3 T, and group 4, control group, was not exposed to magnetic field. After MRI exposure, all embryos were again put inside incubator to complete 48 h. "The new technique" was used to open eggs, a stereomicroscope was used for the examination of magnified external morphology, and each embryo was examined according to the Hamburger and Hamilton chicken embryo stages. Embryos who had delayed stages of development are considered growth retarded. Growth retardation criteria do not include small for stage. RESULTS: Compared with embryos not exposed to a magnetic field, there was a statistically significant increase in the incidence of neural tube closure defects and growth retardation in the embryos exposed to magnetic fields (p < 0.05). However, although the incidence of neural tube closure defects was expected to increase as exposure (tesla level) increased, we found a higher rate of defects in the 1.5-T group compared with the 3-T group. By contrast, the highest incidence of growth retardation was in the 3-T group, which was consistent with our expectation that growth retardation would be more likely as tesla level increased. CONCLUSIONS: We therefore conclude that the use of magnetic resonance imaging as a diagnostic tool can result in midline closure defects and growth retardation in chicken embryos. We hypothesize that this may also be true for human embryos exposed to MRI. If a pregnant individual is to take an MRI scan, as for lumbar disc disease or any other any other reason, our results indicate that consideration should be given to an avoidance of MRI during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The most important issue in flap surgery is flap viability. This study aimed to compare the effects of most commonly used phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors on flap survival. METHODS: A 3 × 9 cm flap was elevated from the dorsum of 32 Wistar albino rats. In the control group, saline was administered 2 hours before the flap elevation and continued for 2 days after the surgery. In the sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil groups, the related drug was administered. Blood flow in the flaps was monitored with laser Doppler flowmetry. On postoperative day 7, flaps were photographed and biopsies were obtained. RESULTS: The ratios of flap necrosis area in the tadalafil, sildenafil, and vardenafil groups were lower than that in the control group, but without significant difference (p = 0.077). Histopathological evaluation revealed no significant difference among the groups. CONCLUSION: The ratio of flap necrosis area tended to be lower in the groups receiving oral PDE5 inhibitors than in the control group, although not statistically significant. The role of PDE5 inhibitors needs to be evaluated in larger studies before a conclusion can be made regarding their effects on flap viability.
