RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk variables related to the types of candidemia for each patient, who was admitted into the intensive care unit regardless of the patient with or without complete diagnosis of COVID-19, during the period of March 2019 to December 2022. METHODS: The evaluation comparison of demographic and clinical data of COVID-19 positive and negative patients with candidemia confirmed in blood, 113 cases were assessed. Variables such as gender, age, age of hospitalization, history of hospitalization, concurrently infection, The acute physiology and chronic health evaluation-II scores, comorbidity checking, intubation, central venous catheter use, parenteral nutrition use, steroid use, antibiotic use, lymphopenia, and laboratory variables were evaluated. Candida species distribution, antifungal susceptibility in blood culture were determined. RESULTS: Coronavirus disease-19 was present in 62.8% of cases confirmed candidemia, and these cases were significantly different from COVID-19 negative cases. Significance was found in more intubation, central venous catheter use, parenteral nutrition, and steroid therapy in Group 2. There was no significance with species distribution and associated infection. In total, COVID-19 positive had higher hemoglobin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transaminase, and white blood cell levels, which may be associated with the possibility of revealing and controlling candidemia. CONCLUSION: Candida albicans and Candida Parapsilosis (C. parapsilosis) are the species seen in infected COVID-19 patients, while C. parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis are found in non-COVID-19 ones. Risk factors were intubation, parenteral nutrition, central venous catheter, and steroid in the COVID-19 group.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Mortality of healthcare-associated Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia can be 50-60% in intensive care units (ICUs). We aimed to determine the risk factors for 28-day mortality in patients with sepsis due to A. baumannii bacteremia during their ICU follow-up. METHODOLOGY: Demographic characteristics, disease severity scores on admission and bacteremia day (BD), resistance status, invasive interventions, and laboratory values showing the infection and severity of the BD, were compared between groups with and without mortality as a retrospective cohort study in the ICU of a tertiary hospital. RESULTS: Of a total of 2411 patients, there were 192 cases of bacteremia. After applying the exclusion criteria, 39 patients were recruited for the study, 25 of whom died (mortality rate 64.1%). Higher age, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II) on admission and high Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score (SOFA), Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW) (p < 0.001), and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) (p = 0.002) on the BD and invasive intervention in follow-up were associated with mortality. When CRP and RDW were both positive, sensitivity was 72%, specificity was 100%, negative predictive value was 33%, and positive predictive value was 100% for the 28-day mortality after BD. Based on multivariate analysis, CRP and RDW values on the BD were independent risk factors for mortality. CONCLUSIONS: It is critical to monitor SOFA, RDW, and CRP values in older ICU patients with SAPS II scores and who undergo invasive intervention in follow-up. Increases in these parameters may indicate bacteremia with high mortality due to A. baumannii.

RESUMO

Salvia officinalis L. is a medicinal plant extensively used in foods, traditional medicine, and the pharmacological industry. In the current study, the effects of different irrigation regimes [irrigation after 70 ± 5 (regular), 105 ± 5 (moderate drought stress), and 140 ± 5 (severe drought stress) mm evaporation] and nutrient sources (control, NPK, farmyard manure, foliar fertilizer, and hydrogel) were investigated on the growth parameters and essential oil (EO) components of S. officinalis in the greenhouse. The plants were harvested two times. The regular irrigation treatment had the most significant effect on plant height (51 cm), fresh and dry herb weight (51.5 and 18.1 g plant-1), and fresh and dry leaf weight (40.1 and 13.1 g plant-1). The highest amount of EO was observed after moderate drought stress (1.48%). The NPK treatment had the greatest effect on plant height (40 cm), branch number (19 per plant), fresh and dry herb weight (53.4 and 18.9 g plant-1), fresh and dry leaf weight (41.2 and 13.6 g plant-1), and EO content (1.67%). The 1st cutting was superior in EO amount, while the 2nd cutting had a high agronomic yield. α-Thujone (from 21.6 to 34.2%) was identified as the predominant compound. Additionally, the content of α-thujone in the 2nd cutting was higher after moderate drought stress, NPK, and hydrogel treatments. Moreover, 1,8-cineole, ß-thujone, camphene, α-pinene, α-humulene, viridiflorol, borneol, and bornyl acetate were the other main compounds. As a general result, regular irrigation and NPK treatments improved the agronomic yield of S. officinalis. The plants under drought stress produced high amounts of EO. The farmyard manure also improved plant yield by providing a part of the plant's nutritional needs. Therefore, it could be concluded that it is crucial to determine the effects of limited water availability and various nutrient sources on yield and chemical compositions for medicinal and aromatic plant growth.

RESUMO

Potassium permanganate (PP) toxicity causes serious morbidity and mortality, though it is rarely observed clinically. Supportive treatment is essential because there is no specific antidote. Gastrointestinal (GI) damage rarely occurs due to the ingestion of PP. A 66-year-old visually impaired patient was admitted to the intensive care unit of our hospital due to toxicity following the intake of 20 PP pills in a suicide attempt. Upper GI system endoscopy was performed at the 20th hour of hospitalisation. Ulcero-necrotic corrosive gastritis was found to have developed in the stomach corpus. In this case report, we aim to discuss the current diagnostic and treatment approaches in PP poisonings in lieu of the previous literature.

RESUMO

In this study, synthesis of insoluble polymeric ligand (L) and its transition metal complexes [Cu(L)Cl2]·2H2O (1), [Co(L)Cl2(H2O)2] (2) and [Ni(L)Cl2(H2O)2] (3), having the azomethine groups, were synthesized by the condensation reactions of the diamines and dialdehydes. The structural properties were characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods using by elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared, Thermo Gravimetric Analysis, Powder X-ray Diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and Inductively Coupled Plasma. The solubilities of the synthesized polymeric materials were also investigated and found as insoluble some organic and inorganic solvents. Additionally, their catalytic performance was carried out for the esterification reaction of acetic acid and butyl acetate. The highest conversion rate is 75.75% by using catalyst 1. The esterification of butanol gave butyl acetate with 100% selectivity.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to assess the oncology patients' spiritual needs and activities. Besides, the study was to provide clinical evaluation of the feasibility and usefulness of the Patients Spiritual Needs Assessment Scale. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed by using a demographic and spiritual practices questionnaire, the Turkish version of the Patients Spiritual Needs Assessment Scale. The results of our study demonstrated that the most common spiritual needs of patients with cancer were "to address issues before death and dying" (100%), "feel a sense of peace and contentment" (94.8%), and "for companionship" (93.5%). Spiritually assessing a patient with cancer requires knowledge of how spiritual needs may manifest and how to talk with a client about his or her spiritual needs. These findings can help nurses to begin this process of providing spiritual care for patients with cancer.

RESUMO

We produced UV curable lenses with properties blocking short wave UV light. In the UV-curable formulations, we used an oligomer (Ac-PEEK) with another urethan oligomer (Mw = 2000). Radically active, molecular weight controlled Ac-PEEK was obtained by reacting 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate with molecular- weight- controlled and isocyanate terminated PEEK (Mn = 4500). We characterized all synthesized monomer, oligomer and optical materials with UV/Vis spectrophotometer with interferogram, elemental analyser, mass spectrophotometer, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analyzer, differential scanning calorimeter, scanning electron microscopy and gas chromatography. Results suggested that newly synthesized oligomer with the structure of PEEK absorbs short wave UV-light. Ageing tests [ISO 11979-5, Ophthalmic implants-intraocular lenses (IOL)-Part 5: Biocompatibility] performed on the IOL materials were successful. High contact angle of the obtained lenses suggests that all lenses were hydrophobic and SEM results revealed that lenses are morphologically homogeneous. Based on all positive properties just mentioned, we safely conclude that the lenses produced in this study are very promising for IOL production.

RESUMO

Specimen of freshwater fish (Cyprinidae) was collected from polluted and clean areas in dam Lake of Seyhan. Ten (n=10) fish were taken from each site. Liver preparations of fish from the two sources were comparatively assayed for glutathione-S-transferase (GST), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), catalase (CAT), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA). All systems were significantly (p<0.1) affected at the polluted site. The microscopic examination of the liver tissues of the fish living in the polluted area showed mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration, cloudy degenerations, congestions and also micro- and macrovesicular fatty degenerations. These results provide evidence that both biochemical parameters and histopathological observations can be assumed as sensitive indicators of fish liver metabolism for polluted areas.
