RESUMO

We aimed to determine the prognostic values of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, body mass index, and prognostic nutritional index scores in patients with high-grade glioma. This was a retrospective observational case series. Between 2015 and 2020, 79 patients with high-grade gliomas 2 oncology centers were included in our study. All patients (n = 79) had high-grade glial tumors and were treated with RT. Sixty-nine (87.3%) patients died, and the median 2 years overall survival was 12.7 months. Recurrence was observed in 25 (31.6%) patients at the end of the treatment. The median recurrence free survival was 24.4 months. There was no significant correlation between systemic inflammation indicators and survival parameters for OS and RFS. Only a marginally significant association between the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and RFS was found. Systemic inflammatory parameters and outcomes were not significantly correlated in patients with high-grade gliomas.

RESUMO

Late diagnosis and treatment of ovarian ischemia can lead to worsening of ischemia, irreversible damage to ovarian functions and infertility. In this process, there is no approved medical treatment that can reduce the negative effects of ischemia and contribute positively to ovarian functions during reperfusion after detorsion. Rats were randomly assigned into one of six groups of eight animals each. The groups were designed as follows: The control group, The ischemia(I) group, The Ischemia + Trimetazidine (I + TMZ) (20 mg/kg) group, and The ischemia-reperfusion group (I/R). The Ischemia-Reperfusion + Trimetazidine (I/R + TMZ) (20 mg/kg) group, and The Sham + Trimetazidine (Sham + TMZ) (20 mg/kg) group. In this study performed thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total thiol (-SH), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß), interleukin 6 (IL-6), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κß). Increased oxidative stress and inflammation were as a result of ovarian I and I/R application. Trimetazidine (TMZ), was sufficient to reduce the oxidative stress and inflammation. TLR4 and NF-κß, which were upregulated by oxidative stress and inflammation, were regressed by TMZ. TMZ should be considered as a potential therapeutic agent in addition to surgery in the clinical treatment of ovarian torsion.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The quality of life of children diagnosed with enuresis is affected negatively compared with that of healthy children. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the education program given within the framework of nursing activities on the quality of life of children diagnosed with enuresis. STUDY DESIGN: The study was conducted on 60 children aged 7-12 years who applied to the urology clinic of a hospital in Turkey and were diagnosed with enuresis. Data were collected using the Pediatric Incontinence Questionnaire (PINQ). Children who met the study criteria were divided into two groups, control and experimental, using the random draw method. Participants in the experimental group were educated by the researcher with using the Enuresis Education Booklet. RESULTS: Of the 60 children, 43.3% were aged 7-8 years and 63.3% were male. At baseline, the children in the control group revealed a total mean PINQ score of 45.00 ± 11.52, and the total mean PINQ score was 45.80 ± 12.05 at 1 month. At baseline, the children in the experimental group revealed a total mean PINQ score of 47.00 ± 11.88, and the total mean PINQ score of was 32.404 ± 8.62 at 1 month. A measurement carried out in the education and control groups 1 month later showed a statistically significant difference in the total mean PINQ scores (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Explaining the disease thoroughly to a child created a positive effect on the child's quality of life.

RESUMO

Constitutional mismatch repair deficiency (CMMRD) is an autosomal recessively inherited childhood cancer predisposition syndrome results from biallelic germline mutations affecting the key DNA mismatch repair gene: MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, or PMS2. CMMRD is associated with a high risk of developing early onset of central nervous system tumors, hematologic, and intestinal tract tumors. Clinical manifestations, genetic screening, and cancer prevention strategies are limited. In this report we present a patient with metachronous Wilms tumor, glioblastoma, and acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. He had cutaneous features of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Molecular testing revealed a novel homozygous mutation in MSH6 (c.2590G>T; p.G864*) that has not been reported previously. CMMRD should be considered in patients with cutaneous features similar to NF1 if tumor is found other than expected tumors in NF, early onset cancer, and strong family history of cancer.

RESUMO

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in Warthin tumor of the parotid gland is an extremely rare entity. This is so far described only in the adult age group, and only one patient has been reported in the pediatric age group until today. Herein, we describe our patient and review the literature. This was a case of a 9-year-old girl admitted with a painless swelling in the left side of her face for at least 2 weeks. Histopathologic examination of total parotidectomy specimens revealed mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in the Warthin tumor. This case is the youngest patient reported to date.

RESUMO

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are considered as the two crucial reactions in key renewable-energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite promising research progress in the preparation of various non-noble metal based electrocatalysts, it is still highly challenging but desirable to develop novel fabrication strategies to synthesize highly active and cost-effective ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts in a precisely controlled manner. Herein, we report atomic layer deposition (ALD) of highly monodisperse Co3O4 nanocrystals of different sizes on N-doped electrospun carbon nanofibers (nCNFs) as high performance bifunctional catalysts (Co@nCNFs) for the ORR and OER. Co@nCNFs (with an average Co3O4 particle size of ∼3 nm) show high ORR performance exhibiting an onset potential of 0.87 V with a low Tafel slope of 119 mV dec-1 approaching that of commercial Pt/C. Similarly, the Co@nCNF electrocatalyst showed remarkable catalytic activity in the OER. The turnover frequency (TOF) value determined at an overpotential of 550 mV for the Co@nCNFs is ∼0.14 s-1 which is ca. 3 and ca. 15-fold higher than those of bulk Co (∼0.05 s-1) and the standard state-of-the-art IrO x (0.0089 s-1) catalyst, respectively. This work will open new possibilities for fabrication of inexpensive non-noble metal materials in highly controlled manner for applications as bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysis.

Foto-Özdemir D, Balseven-Odabasi A, Teksam Ö, Karadag F, Akçan F, Yilmaz E. Medicolegal evaluation of a maternal filicide attempt: a case report. Turk J Pediatr 2019; 61: 622-628. Filicide mainly refers to the murder of a child by his/her parents. Even though filicide is a rare event, outcome of filicide is more severe compared to other types of murders. In this report, we aim to discuss the factors in which the case of a woman who attempted to kill her 2.5-year-old daughter along with the demographical characteristics. Twenty-nine-year-old mother attempted to kill her daughter by hanging. Even though the victim did not die as the mother, regretted her action the triggers and the plot of the case discussed within the filicide framework. Therefore, the presented case report would contribute to the understanding of the nature of the filicide, and it might bring a different perspective, because of the different development process of filicide, sharing the disorder and interwoven motivations between the child and mother. In this respect, we aim to draw attention of pediatricians, child psychiatrists and forensic pathologists about the importance of filicide.

RESUMO

A 3D RuO2/Mn2O3/carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite has been prepared in this study by a facile two step microwave synthesis, as a bi-functional electrocatalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). RuO2 nanoparticles with the mean size of 1.57 nm are uniformly distributed on Mn2O3 nano-rods grown on electrospun CNFs. The electrocatalytic activity of the composites are investigated towards ORR/OER under alkaline condition. The ternary RuO2/Mn2O3/CNF composite showed superior ORR activity in terms of onset potential (0.95 V versus RHE) and Tafel slope (121 mV dec-1) compared to its RuO2/CNF and Mn2O3/CNF counterparts. In the case of OER, the RuO2/Mn2O3/CNF exhibited 0.34 V over-potential value measured at 10 mA cm-2 and 52 mV dec-1 Tafel slope which are lower than those of the other synthesized samples and as compared to state of the art RuO2 and IrO x type materials. RuO2/Mn2O3/CNF also exhibited higher specific capacity (9352 mAh [Formula: see text]) than CNF (1395 mAh [Formula: see text]), Mn2O3/CNF (3108 mAh [Formula: see text]) and RuO2/CNF (4859 mAh g carbon -1) as the cathode material in Na-O2 battery, which indicates the validity of the results in non-aqueous medium. Taking the benefit of RuO2 and Mn2O3 synergistic effect, the decomposition of inevitable side products at the end of charge occurs at 3.838 V versus Na/Na+ by using RuO2/Mn2O3/CNF, which is 388 mV more cathodic compared with CNF.

RESUMO

Cardiac angiosarcomas are extremely rare in childhood, they are rapidly progressive tumours that often present themselves as diagnostic dilemmas, resulting in delayed diagnosis. Also, extracardiac manifestations, including abdominal pain, are extremely rare in patients with intracardiac tumors. We herein present the case of a 15-year-old girl who presented with abdominal pain. Echocardiography and thoracic computed tomography showed right atrial mass. The patient underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Eight months after treatment, abdominal recurrence was detected. The abdominal mass was resected, and radiotherapy and new chemotherapy protocol were given. The present case illustrates a rare case of primary cardiac angiosarcoma posing a diagnostic dilemma in an adolescent girl.

RESUMO

The effects of varying LiPF6 salt concentration and the presence of lithium bis(oxalate)borate additive on the electronic structure of commonly used lithium-ion battery electrolyte solvents (ethylene carbonate-dimethyl carbonate and propylene carbonate) have been investigated. X-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy (a non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering method) was utilized together with a closed-circle flow cell. Carbon and oxygen K-edges provide characteristic information on the electronic structure of the electrolyte solutions, which are sensitive to local chemistry. Higher Li+ ion concentration in the solvent manifests itself as a blue-shift of both the π* feature in the carbon edge and the carbonyl π* feature in the oxygen edge. While these oxygen K-edge results agree with previous soft X-ray absorption studies on LiBF4 salt concentration in propylene carbonate, carbon K-edge spectra reveal a shift in energy, which can be explained with differing ionic conductivities of the electrolyte solutions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Sexual abuse in childhood is a significant public health problem because of the destructive results both to the individual and to the community. The aim of this study was to examine the sociodemographic characteristics of children who were victims of sexual abuse, the relationship of the victim and abuser, and the findings of sexual abuse. MATERIAL AND METHODS An examination was made of the results of forensic medicine and psychiatric evaluations of child victims of sexual abuse. The sociodemographic characteristics of the cases and the characteristics of the incidents of sexual abuse were evaluated at the Forensic Medicine Department of Cumhuriyet University between 2013 and 2016. RESULTS A total of 55 cases were included in the study, comprising eight males (14.5%) and 47 females (85.5%) in the age range of 5-17 years. The vast majority of the cases were high school students. The place of the abuse incident was the home of the victim or the perpetrator in 29 cases (52.7%). The sexual abuse was determined to be bodily penetration in 32 cases (58.1%). In 32 cases (58.1%), the perpetrator was known to the victim. CONCLUSIONS The study findings that the perpetrator of the sexual abuse was known to the child, that predominantly female children were attacked, and the low sociocultural level of the cases were consistent with other studies reported in the literature. To prevent sexual abuse of children, to make an early diagnosis, and to provide rehabilitation for the abused children, it is essential that the evaluations of these cases are made using a professional multidisciplinary approach.

RESUMO

Here, we report the synthesis of vanadium diselenide (VSe2) three-dimensional nanoparticles (NPs) and two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) utilizing nanosecond pulsed laser ablation technique followed by liquid-phase exfoliation. Furthermore, a systematic study has been conducted on the effect of NP and NS morphologies of VSe2 in their catalytic activities toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline, neutral, and acidic conditions. Research on VSe2 clearly demonstrates that these morphologies do not have a significant difference for ORR and OER; however, a drastic effect of morphology was observed for HER. The ORR activity of both NSs and NPs involves ∼2.85 numbers of electrons with the Tafel slope of 120 mV/dec in alkaline and neutral pH. In alkaline solution, NPs are proved to be an efficient catalyst for OER with an onset potential 1.5 V; however, for HER, NSs have a better onset potential of -0.25 V. Moreover, the obtained NPs have also better catalytic activity with a 400 mV anodic shift in the onset potential compared to NSs. These results provide a reference point for the future application of VSe2 in energy storage and conversion devices and mass production of other 2D materials.

RESUMO

A 68-year-old woman with a history of multiple myeloma presented to the clinic with pain and vision loss in her right eye. Proptosis was observed in her right eye and eye movements were restricted in all directions. Best corrected visual acuity was 3/10 in her right eye. On biomicroscopic examination, hyperemia and subconjunctival hemorrhage were present. Fundus examination of the right eye revealed optic disc edema and choroidal folds. In magnetic resonance imaging two orbital masses were detected. Based on the patient's history and ocular examination, we evaluated the masses as orbital metastasis of multiple myeloma. Palliative radiotherapy was recommended.

RESUMO

Mesoporous Li4 Ti5 O12 (LTO) thin film is an important anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Mesoporous films could be prepared by self-assembly processes. A molten-salt-assisted self-assembly (MASA) process is used to prepare mesoporous thin films of LTOs. Clear solutions of CTAB, P123, LiNO3 , HNO3 , and Ti(OC4 H9 )4 in ethanol form gel-like meso-ordered films upon either spin or spray coating. In the assembly process, the CTAB/P123 molar ratio of 14 is required to accommodate enough salt species in the mesophase, in which the LiI /P123 ratio can be varied between molar ratios of 28 and 72. Calcination of the meso-ordered films produces transparent mesoporous spinel LTO films that are abbreviated as Cxx-yyy-zzz or CAxx-yyy-zzz (C=calcined, CA=calcined-annealed, xx=LiI /P123 molar ratio, and yyy=calcination and zzz=annealing temperatures in Celsius) herein. All samples were characterized by using XRD, TEM, N2 -sorption, and Raman techniques and it was found that, at all compositions, the LTO spinel phase formed with or without an anatase phase as an impurity. Electrochemical characterization of the films shows excellent performance at different current rates. The CA40-350-450 sample performs best among all samples tested, yielding an average discharge capacity of (176±1) mA h g-1 at C/2 and (139±4) mA h g-1 at 50 C and keeping 92 % of its initial discharge capacity upon 50 cycles at C/2.

RESUMO

Template-directed synthesis of nanomaterials can provide benefits such as small crystalline size, high surface area, large surface-to-volume ratio, and structural stability. These properties are important for shorter distance in ion/electron movement and better electrode surface/electrolyte contact for energy storage applications. Here nanostructured FePO4 cathode materials were synthesized by using peptide nanostructures as a template inspired by biomineralization process. The amorphous, high surface area FePO4 nanostructures were utilized as a cathode for lithium-ion batteries. Discharge capacity of 155 mAh/g was achieved at C/20 current rate. The superior properties of biotemplated and nanostructured amorphous FePO4 are shown compared to template-free crystalline FePO4.

RESUMO

The malignant variant of epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) of the kidney is uncommon, extremely aggressive and behaves like a renal cell carcinoma. We present a case of a 12-year-old male with malignant EAML who was treated according to adult treatment protocols. To our knowledge, axitinib has not been used before in children. We conclude that adult protocols, in this rare case, could be safely used in rare childhood malignancies.

RESUMO

Low electrical efficiency for the lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) electrochemical reaction is one of the most significant challenges in current nonaqueous Li-O2 batteries. Here we present ruthenium oxide nanoparticles (RuO2 NPs) dispersed on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a cathode, which dramatically increase the electrical efficiency up to 73%. We demonstrate that the RuO2 NPs contribute to the formation of poorly crystalline lithium peroxide (Li2O2) that is coated over the CNT with large contact area during oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This unique Li2O2 structure can be smoothly decomposed at low potential upon oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by avoiding the energy loss associated with the decomposition of the more typical Li2O2 structure with a large size, small CNT contact area, and insulating crystals.
