INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to compare the loneliness, psychological well- being, depression, and social participation of elderly people living in Turkish society between rural and urban areas. The sample group of the study, in which a correlational survey model was used, consisted of 610 elderly adults. METHOD: The study population consists of two groups: the first group consists of individuals over 65 years of age living in the city (Istanbul) (n= 291), and the second group consists of individuals over 65 years of age living in rural areas (rural areas of Ordu) (n= 319). Socio-demographic Information Form, Loneliness in the Elderly Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, Psychological Well-Being in the Elderly Scale, and Social Inclusion Scale were applied online. Statistical analyses of the study were conducted using SPSS 27.00, and the Independent Samples t-test and ANOVA test were used. RESULTS: According to the findings of this study, statistically significant results were found in psychological well-being, social inclusion, social relations, loneliness and depression, and place of residence. It was observed that the social isolation and social acceptance levels of those living in urban areas were higher than those living in rural areas. Social, loneliness, and depression scores of those living in the village/town were found to be higher than those living in the city centre. Furthermore, the social relationship scores of those living in the village/town were found to be higher than those living in the city centre. CONCLUSION: The increasing elderly population worldwide has become an issue that requires global measures. Place of residence is one of the factors thought to affect older people's health and well- being. It is thought that the study data will contribute to new policies that will ensure the protection and promotion of elderly health and those working in this field. In addition, the study, which provides information about Turkish culture, will also enable intercultural comparisons.

BACKGROUND: A minimal number of studies have documented the impact of Vestibular rehabilitation (VR) on the recovery rate of patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of structured VR programs on severity of dizziness, kinesiophobia, balance, fatigue, quality of sleep, activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QoL) in subjects with chronic BVH. METHOD: Twenty-five participants diagnosed with BVH were included in the study. A structured VR program was applied in 50-minute sessions once a week and as a home exercise program 3 times a day over 8 weeks. Participants were evaluated for severity of dizziness with the visual analog scale, for kinesiophobia with the tampa scale of kinesiophobia, for balance with the Semitandem, tandem, and standing tests, for quality of sleep with the Pittsburgh sleep quality index, for ADL with the vestibular disorders activities of daily life, for QoL with dizziness handicap inventory and for fatigue with the fatigue severity scale at the baseline (T1), at 4th week (T2), 8th week (T3), and 20th week (T4) after study started. RESULTS: Significant difference in terms of Tandem Test and 1 Leg Stand Test was found in favor of T3-T4 Period (P < .05). There were significant improvements in terms of vestibular disorders activities of daily life, tampa scale of kinesiophobia, Pittsburgh sleep quality index and dizziness handicap inventory in favor of the T3 to T4 Period (P < .05). Significant difference in terms of visual analog scale was found in favor of T2 Period (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: A twelve-week structured VR program may enhance severity of dizziness, kinesiophobia, balance, quality of sleep, ADL and QoL in participants with chronic BVH.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative adhesion is an important complication after middle-ear surgeries. Although many materials have been tried to prevent this complication, the use of Poly (dl-lactide ε-caprolactone) as an anti-adhesive material after middle-ear surgery has not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-adhesive effect of poly (dl-lactide ε-caprolactone) on the ears of rats with middle-ear mucosa damage. METHODS: In our study, 14 Wistar albino rats and 28 ears in total were used. The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups. Middle ear mucosa damage was performed in all groups with a transcanal approach under otomicroscopy in sterile conditions. The effects of poly (dl-lactide ε-caprolactone), silicone sheet, and absorbable gelatin sponge were compared histologically with the secondary healing group. In addition, hearing evaluation was performed before the procedure and on the 28th postoperative day. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed in transient otoacoustic emission and distortion product otoacoustic emissions tests performed before and after the surgical procedure when the groups were compared. While adhesion was observed in the tympanic membrane in the absorbable gelatin sponge group, no adhesion was observed in the other groups. In the absorbable gelatin sponge group, increased fibroblastic activity, inflammation, and neovascularization were observed in the middle-ear mucosa. No significant difference was observed in silicone sheet, poly (dl-lactide ε-caprolactone), and control groups in terms of fibroblastic activity, inflammation, and neovascularization. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that absorbable poly (dl-lactide ε-caprolactone) is nonototoxic and biocompatible with the rat's middle ear cavity by short-term evaluation.

PURPOSE: To compare the audiological performances of Turkey's most up-to-date bone conduction implant processors. METHODS: Twenty-six bone-anchored hearing instrument users, thirteen in each group, were evaluated for speech understanding in quiet and several signal-to-noise ratios. RESULTS: We noticed the differences at 0.5 and 1 kHz measurements in free field frequency specific test, aided SRT scores, non-adaptive and adaptive matrix test results for a few conditions created a statistically significant difference in favor of Baha-6®. CONCLUSIONS: Both processors offer positive gains to their users in noisy and silent conditions. However, the data showed statistically significant differences for some measurements that may be critical for patients in daily practice.

In this study, a biological conduit, consisting of an adipocyte-derived mesenchymal stem cell (AdMSCs) sheet and amniotic membrane (AM), was designed for the reconstruction of peripheral nerve defects. To evaluate the effect of the produced conduit on neural regeneration, a 10-mm sciatic nerve defect was created in rats, and experiments were carried out on six groups, i.e., sham control group (SC), negative control group (NC), nerve autograft group (NG), the biological conduit (AdMSCs + AM) group, the commercial PGA tube conduit (PGA) group, and the conduit only consisting of AM (AM) group. The effects of different nerve repair methods on the peripheral nerve and gastrocnemius muscle were evaluated by functional, histological, and immunohistochemical tests. When the number of myelinated axons was compared between the groups of AdMSCs + AM and PGA, it was higher in the AdMSCs + AM group (p < 0.05). The percentage of gastrocnemius collagen bundle area of AdMSCs + AM group was found to be statistically lower than the PGA group (p < 0.05). The muscle fiber diameter of AdMSCs + AM group was lower than that of the NG group, but significantly higher than that of the PGA group and the AM group (p < 0.001). Muscle weight index was significantly higher in the AdMSCs + AM group compared to the PGA group (p < 0.05). It was observed that nerve regeneration was faster in the AdMSCs + AM group, and there was an earlier improvement in pin-prick score and sciatic functional index compared to the PGA group and the AM group. In conclusion, the biological conduit prepared from the AdMSCs sheet and AM is regarded as a new biological conduit that can be used as an alternative treatment method to nerve autograft in clinical applications.

We aimed to evaluate the effect of a combination of natural products on parameters related to inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and oxidative stress in a cohort of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients with Serum Amyloid A amyloidosis, in a non-randomized, 24-week open-label interventional study. Morinda citrifolia (anti-atherosclerotic-AAL), omega-3 (anti-inflammatory-AIC), and extract with Alaskan blueberry (antioxidant-AOL) were given to patients with FMF-related biopsy-proven AA amyloidosis. Patients were >18 years and had proteinuria (>3500 mg/day) but a normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Arterial flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), and serum biomarkers asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), pentraxin (PTX3), malondialdehyde (MDA), Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were studied at baseline and after 24 weeks of treatment. A total of 67 FMF-related amyloidosis patients (52 male (77.6%); median age 36 years (range 21−66)) were enrolled. At the end of a 24-week treatment period with AAL, AIC, and AOL combination therapy, ADMA, MDA, PTX3, hsCRP, cholesterol, and proteinuria were significantly decreased compared to baseline, while CuZn-SOD, GSH-Px, and FMD levels were significantly increased. Changes in inflammatory markers PTX3, and hsCRP were negatively correlated with FMD change, and positively correlated with decreases in proteinuria, ADMA, MDA, cholesterol, and CIMT. Treatment with AAL, AIC and AOL combination for 24 weeks were significantly associated with reduction in inflammatory markers, improved endothelial functions, and oxidative state. Efficient control of these three mechanisms can have long term cardiovascular and renal benefits for patients with AA amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem involvement (BSI) has been reported as a major predictive factor for future disability in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMPs) and Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) can be used to detect demyelinating lesions in vestibular pathways in MS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty three people with MS and 40 controls were evaluated with Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), vHIT and cVEMP. RESULTS: The median value of DHI in MS group was significantly higher than controls (p<.001). According to vHIT results, while the results of horizontal canal vestibulo-ocular reflex gain in group with brain stem involvement (gBSI (+)) were significantly different from both controls and group without brain stem involvement (gBSI (-)) (p= .036 and .024, respectively), results of gBSI (-) were similar with controls (p= .858). When cVEMP results were examined, mean P1 wave latency in gBSI (+) was significantly longer than controls (p= .002), but difference between gBSI (-) and controls and gBSI (+) was not statistically significant (p= .104 and .279, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: vHIT and cVEMP can be used in diagnosis and follow-up of people with MS without demyelinating brainstem lesions on MRI.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of atherosclerosis in the pathogenesis of sudden hearing loss by evaluating the newly discovered markers, serum salusin-α and salusin-ß. We also aimed to evaluate atherosclerosis risk factors, such as lipid profile, smoking, body mass index, waist circumference and mean blood pressure of the patients. METHODS: Fifty-two patients diagnosed with sudden hearing loss (study group) and fifty healthy people (control group) were included in the study. Detailed history was taken from the patients and risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as smoking, body mass index, waist circumference, lipid profile, mean blood pressure and serum salusin-α and salusin-ß levels, were evaluated. The study group was divided into recovery group (subgroup I) and non-recovery group (subgroup II). RESULTS: The salusin-ß median value was found to be significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The salusin-ß median value was found to be significantly higher in subgroup 2 and was found to be a poor prognostic factor (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: From the results obtained in this study, it is thought that salusin-ß peptide is increased in patients with sudden hearing loss and it can be evaluated as a poor prognostic factor.

Insect wings are an outstanding example of how a proper interplay of rigid and flexible materials enables an intricate flapping flight accompanied by sound. The understanding of the aerodynamics and acoustics of insect wings has enabled the development of man-made flying robotic vehicles and explained basic mechanisms of sound generation by natural flyers. This work proposes the concept of artificial wings with a periodic pattern, inspired by metamaterials, and explores how the pattern geometry can be used to control the aerodynamic and acoustic characteristics of a wing. For this, we analyzed bio-inspired wings with anisotropic honeycomb patterns flapping at a low frequency and developed a multi-parameter optimization procedure to tune the pattern design in order to increase lift and simultaneously to manipulate the produced sound. Our analysis is based on the finite-element solution to a transient three-dimensional fluid-structure interactions problem. The two-way coupling is described by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for viscous air and structural equations of motion for a wing undergoing large deformations. We 3D-printed three wing samples and validated their robustness and dynamics experimentally. Importantly, we showed that the proposed wings can sustain long-term resonance excitation that opens a possibility to implement resonance-type flights inherent to certain natural flyers. Our results confirm the feasibility of metamaterial patterns to control the flapping flight dynamics and can open new perspectives for applications of 3D-printed patterned wings, e.g. in the design of drones with target sound.

INTRODUCTION: Left internal mammary artery (LIMA) grafts should be used in patients undergoing CABG. No other procedure results in patency equivalent to that of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD)-LIMA bypass graft. The CHA2DS2-Vasc-HS scoring system can be used to successfully predict CAD severity in stable CAD patients. We aimed to investigate the relationship between LIMA flow and the CHA2DS2-Vasc-HS score. METHODS: A total of 684 patients, who underwent CABG surgery, were included in this study. Previous history of bypass surgery, emergency operations, patients with Leriche syndrome and patients with severe obstructive pulmonary and subclavian artery disease were excluded from our study. Patients with a LIMA flow that was suitable for bypass grafting, as determined during the intraoperative evaluation, were included in the low LIMA flow group, and the CHA2DS2-Vasc-HS score was calculated for all patients. RESULTS: Patients in the low LIMA flow group (Group 1) were older. The CHA2DS2-Vasc-HS score (P < 0.001), presence of mild or moderate COPD (P = 0.022), number of severely diseased vessels (P = 0.036), and BMI (P < 0.001) were independent predictors of poor LIMA flow. The cutoff value of the CHA2DS2-VASc-HS score for the prediction of poor LIMA flow was >5.5, with a sensitivity of 92.9% and specificity of 83.4% (AUC: 0.938, 95% Cl: 0.906 - 0.970, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: A preoperative high CHA2DS2-Vasc-HS score can be used to predict low intraoperative LIMA flow. The CHA2DS2-Vasc-HS score is an easy-to-use and reliable estimation method and can be used as an additional preoperative of LIMA flow in patients undergoing CABG due to severe CAD.

BACKGROUND: Due to many different reasons such as possible coronavirus colonization in tonsillar tissue, decreased enzymatic antiviral activity, decreased cytokine activity from palatine tonsil tissue and reduced humoral and cellular immune response, tonsillectomy may alter the incidence of Covid-19. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To reveal the frequency of Covid-19 in patients who underwent tonsillectomy and to analyze the effect of tonsillectomy on the severity of the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged between 15 and 65 and had a history of tonsillectomy were compared with control group in terms of incidence and severity of Covid-19 disease. RESULTS: A 4% Covid rRT-PCR test positivity rate was detected in patients with tonsillectomy whereas; it was 6.8% in the control group with a statistically significant difference. However, in terms of disease severity there was no difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: It has been proven that tonsillectomy surgery does not pose an additional risk in terms of COVID 19 disease severity. The positive effect of tonsillectomy in terms of disease frequency has been even demonstrated for the first time in the literature.

The aim of the study was to compare the clinical phenotype of patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF)-related AA amyloidosis, according to the age of FMF diagnosis and E148Q genotype. Patients with biopsy-confirmed FMF-related AA amyloidosis were included in the study. Tel-Hashomer criteria were applied in the diagnosis of FMF. All patients had detailed baseline assessment of clinical features, renal functions, genetic testing, histopathological diagnosis of amyloidosis, and treatment received. Multiple comparisons were performed according to the age of diagnosis, disease phenotype, mutation, and mortality. Our study included 169 patients with a diagnosis of AA amyloidosis. There were 101 patients diagnosed with FMF < 18 years of age and 68 patients diagnosed who were ≥18 years of age. The three most common clinical manifestations were fever (84.6%), abdominal pain (71.6%), and arthritis (66.9%). The most common allele among FMF patients was M694V (60.6%), followed by E148Q (21.4%), and M680I (10.3%). The most frequent genotypes were M694V/M694V (45.0%), M694V/E148Q (14.8%), and E148Q/E148Q (11.2%) among 169 patients in our cohort. During the follow-up period, 15 patients (10 male, 5 female) died, of whom 14 had M694V homozygous genotype and one was homozygous for E148Q. Clinicians should be aware of patients with homozygous E148Q genotype for close monitoring and further evaluation. The possible relationship between E148Q and AA amyloidosis needs to be confirmed in other ethnicities.

The aim of our study is to evaluate the relationship between peripheral facial paralysis and the patients who had a contact with a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patient or had COVID-19. Patients with a history of contact with a COVID-19 patient or having COVID-19 disease, who were admitted to the emergency department for peripheral facial paralysis in the last 6 months, were included in the study. Facial paralysis grade at first presentation, treatment modality, treatment duration, post-treatment facial paralysis grade, and additional findings were analyzed. A total of 34 patients, 20 females and 14 males, were included into the study. Nasal-oropharyngeal reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was test taken from patients with a history of contact, and patients having COVID-19 disease were determined as positive in 5 and 3 patients, respectively. Peripheral facial paralysis was detected as an initial finding in 5 of these 8 patients, and paralysis developed in 7-12 days after the diagnosis of the COVID-19 disease in the remaining 3 patients. The grade of first admission paralysis did not change in one patient in the (+) group, while improvement was observed in all patients in the (-) group. Neuroinvasive potential of COVID-19 in the central and peripheral nervous system was reported in current literature. Our study indicates peripheral facial palsy can also be encountered during the clinical course of COVID-19 and should be considered a finding of this disease.

Genetic manipulation of Escherichia coli influences the regulation of bacterial metabolism, which could be useful for the production of different targeted products. The RpoZ gene encodes for the ω subunit of the RNA polymerase (RNAP) and is involved in the regulation of the relA gene pathway. RelA is responsible for the production of guanosine pentaphosphate (ppGpp), which is a major alarmone in the stringent response. Expression of relA is reduced in the early hours of growth of RpoZ mutant E. coli. In the absence of the ω subunit, ppGpp affinity to RNAP is decreased; thus, rpoZ gene deleted E. coli strains show a modified stringent response. We used the E. coli K-12 MG1655 strain that lacks rpoZ (JEN202) to investigate the effect of the modified stringent response on recombinant protein production. However, the absence of the ω subunit results in diminished stability of the RNA polymerase at the promoter site. To avoid this, we used a deactivated CRISPR system that targets the ω subunit to upstream of the promoter site in the expression plasmid. The expression plasmid encodes for Chaetomium thermophilum formate dehydrogenase (CtFDH), a valuable enzyme for cofactor regeneration and CO2 reduction. A higher amount of CtFDH from the soluble fraction was purified from the JEN202 strain compared to the traditional BL21(DE3) method, thus offering a new strategy for batch-based recombinant enzyme production.

In this study, nanofibrous matrices of poly(L-lactic acid)-hydroxyapatite (PLLA-HAp) were successfully fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) electrospinning for use in the treatment of irregular bone damages. Compressibility analysis showed that 3D nanofibrous grafts occupied at least 2-fold more volume than their 2D form and they can easily take shape of the defect zone with irregular geometry. Moreover, the compression moduli of the PLLA and PLLA-HAp grafts were calculated as 8.0 ± 3.0 kPa and 11.8 ± 3.9 kPa, respectively, while the strain values of the same samples at the maximum load of 600 kPa were 164 ± 28% and 130 ± 20%, respectively. Treatment of the grafts with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution increased the surface roughness and thus the alloplastic graft materials (PLLA-HAp/M) protecting the fiber morphology were produced successfully. Then, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was loaded into the surface modified grafts and activated with 10% calcium chloride. The efficiency of the activation was evaluated with flow cytometry and it was found that after activation the percentages of CD62 (P-selectin) and CD41/61 (glycoprotein IIb/IIIa) proteins increased approximately 4-fold. Surface hydrophilicity and biological activity of the PLLA-HAp grafts were enhanced by fibrin coating after PRP activation. Thein vitrocell culture studies which were carried out by using mouse pre-osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) showed that graft materials supported by PRP increased cellular proliferation and osteogenic differentiation significantly. Thein vivoresults demonstrated that compared with bare PLLA-HAp/M grafts, the PRP loaded grafts (PRP-PLLA-HAp/M) induced significantly greater bone formation based on computed tomography, histological and immunohistochemical analyses. Our findings suggest that 3D PLLA nanofibrous matrices can be used as a graft material for irregular bone defects especially when combined with PRP as an osteogenic induction agent.

BACKGROUND: Untreated traumatic tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs) may lead to permanent perforations and hearing loss. There are many materials that have been previously used for repairing the TMPs. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and histological effects of Vivosorb (Vv) and Epifilm on healing of TMPs in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The posterior-inferior quadrant of the tympanic membranes (TMs) in right ears of 14 rats was perforated using a 20-g needle and then the animals were randomly divided into 2 equal groups (n = 7). The perforated right TMs were treated with either Vv (Vv group) or Epifilm (Ep group). The left TMs of 7 rats were perforated in same way and allowed to close spontaneously without any topical material applications (spontaneous closure group as sham control, SC). The left tympanic membranes of the other 7 rats were not perforated and used as normal controls (NC group). On postoperative 15th day, tympanic bullas were extracted from killed rats and examined morphometrically and histopathologically. RESULTS: Perforation closure rate was 85.7% (6/7) in both Vv and SC groups. Perforations of Ep group closed in 7/7 (100%) ears. The thicknesses of the perforated membranes were increased in SC and especially Vv groups. Also, connective tissue fibrosis, blood clots, and epithelial degenerations were detected in SC and Vv groups. The mean fibroblastic reaction scores of Vv, Ep, and SC groups were 2.14(+), 0.57(+), and 1.71(+) respectively, on comparison with NC group. The mean neovascularization score was 1.42(+) in Vv group, 0.14(+) in Ep group, and 0.57(+) in SC group. CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Vivosorb and especially Epifilm can improve the healing process in traumatic TMPs and additionally, Epifilm might be more preferred for the treatment of TMPs because of causing lesser fibrosis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effect of modified extracorporeal endonasal septoplasty on nasal tip shape and function in patients with severe caudal septal deviation. METHODS: The study population comprised of 55 patients undergoing modified extracorporeal endonasal septoplasty, which called marionette septoplasty. To analyse the aesthetic objective outcomes, postoperative photographs were measured for projection index (PI), tip projection (TP), nasolabial angle (NLA), tip deviation angle (TDA), nasofrontal angle (NFA), supratip height (STH), columellar height (CH), at three times (2 weeks, 3, and 6 months after surgery) and were compared with preoperative photographs. Functional and aesthetic outcomes were also evaluated using nasal obstruction symptom evaluation (NOSE) scale and standardized cosmesis and health nasal outcomes survey (SCHNOS). RESULTS: Between the pre- and post-operative 6th-month examinations, a significant increase in PI and TP were 7%, and 5% respectively. There was a significant alteration in the NLA and TDA values following the last examination (mean difference ± standard error of mean 9.68 ± 0.9° and 1.5 ± 0.8°, respectively). Moreover, the technique did not make a significant change in the final NFA, STH, and CH, measurements. Following surgery, the NOSE and SCHNOS scores were decreased significantly and the improvement continued over time until the last examination. CONCLUSION: The present study findings suggest that the marionette septoplasty technique is an effective to correct and stabilize severe caudal septal deviations. This technique also can provide tip support and protection with a low incidence of dorsal irregularity.

PURPOSE: To compare the results of video head impulse test (vHIT) and caloric testing (CT) in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) and Ménière's disease (MD) and to investigate the relationship between these two tests. METHODS: Patients with definite unilateral MD and VM were included in the study. All patients underwent both vHIT and CT. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gains of lateral semicircular canals and saccadic waves in vHIT and the canal paresis factor for the CT were examined. RESULTS: CT was found abnormal in 39 (66.1%) patients with MD and in 17 (34%) patients with VM, while abnormal gain of the lateral canal was obtained in 23 MD (39%) patients and 9 (18%) VM patients. In all, 11.9% of patients with an abnormal vHIT had a normal CT, whereas 33.9% of those with an abnormal CT had a normal vHIT. CONCLUSION: Loss of VOR detected by caloric testing is more common and severe in MD than VM. Although vHIT is useful and can give complementary information, vestibular testing with the caloric test still seems more sensitive for detecting hVOR pathology.

Chronic inflammation and proteinuria is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with chronic kidney diseases and rheumatologic disorders. Our aim was to investigate the CVD events (CVDEs) and survival between the patients with FMF-related AA amyloidosis and glomerulonephropathies (GN) to define possible predictors for CVDEs. A prospective follow-up study with FMF-amyloidosis and glomerulonephropathy (GN) was performed and patients were followed for CVDEs. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), FGF-23, serum lipid, hsCRP levels, BMI and HOMA were assessed. A Cox regression analysis was performed to evaluate the risk factors for CVDEs. There were 107 patients in the FMF-amyloidosis group and 126 patients with GN group. Forty-seven CVDEs were observed during the 4.2-years follow up; all 28 patients in the FMF-amyloidosis group and 14/19 patients with GN developed CVDEs before the age of 40 (p = 0.002). CVD mortality was 2.8 times higher (95% CI 1.02-7.76) in patients with FMF-amyloidosis. Across both groups, FMD and FGF23 (p < 0.001) levels were independently associated with the risk of CVDEs. Patients with FMF-amyloidosis are at increased risk of early CVDEs with premature mortality age. FGF 23, FMD and hsCRP can stratify the risk of early CVD in patients with FMF-related AA amyloidosis.
