In this study, we report the implementation of a comprehensive wastewater surveillance testing program at a university campus in Singapore to identify Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected individuals and the usage of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) as well as other emerging contaminants (ECs). This unique co-monitoring program simultaneously measured SARS-CoV-2 with chemical markers/contaminants as the COVID-19 situation evolved from pandemic to endemic stages, following a nationwide mass vaccination drive. SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in wastewater from campus dormitories were measured using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and corroborated with the number of symptomatic COVID-19 cases confirmed with the antigen rapid test (ART). Consistent results were observed where the concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA detected in wastewater increased proportionately with the number of COVID-19 infected individuals residing on campus. Similarly, a wide range of ECs, including disinfectants and antibiotics, were detected through sensitive liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) techniques to establish PPCPs consumption patterns during various stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore. Statistical correlation of SARS-CoV-2 RNA was observed with few ECs belonging to disinfectants, PCPs and antibiotics. A high concentration of disinfectants and subsequent positive correlation with the number of reported cases on the university campus indicates that disinfectants could serve as a chemical marker during such unprecedented times.

This study investigated the nutrient removal, decarbonization potentials, and bioenergy production (i.e., algal biomass and biogas) between a membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) and a sequencing photobioreactor (SPBR) as the post-treatment process of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for municipal wastewater treatment. All photobioreactors without aeration showed favourable performance on AnMBR effluent polishing and bioenergy production. In comparison, MPBRs achieved higher removal efficiencies with 98.4 %-99.1 % NH4-N and 74.8 %-88.4 % PO4-P removal compared to the SPBRs with 41.1 %-82.0 % NH4-N and 39.6 %-72.9 % PO4-P removal. MPBRs enhanced more nutrient utilization (24.9-49.3 g(N)/(m3·d) and 3.4-8.1 g(P)/(m3·d)) and CO2 assimilation (22.9-43.4 g(C)/(m3·d)), and concentrated more microalgae with 1.58-1.98 g/L higher than the SPBRs. Moreover, the MPBR effectively upgraded the biogas from AnMBR with superior methane percentage of 89.4 %-93.4 % due to its better CO2 biofixation. The MPBR, with better carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous removal and bioenergy production, following AnMBR is an attractive decarbonized technology for future sustainable wastewater treatment.

In this study, two lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR), seeded with intertidal wetland sediment (IWS) and activated sludge (AS), were constructed to compare their performances in treating high-salinity (3%) wastewater. Under a wide range of influent TOC (178-620 mg/L) and NH4+-N (25-100 mg/L), both the MBBRs (Riws and Ras) exhibited excellent TOC removal efficiencies of >95%. Regarding nitrogen reduction, Riws exhibited a significantly superior TN removal efficiency of 90.2 ± 1.8% than that of Ras (76.8 ± 2.9%). A correlation analysis was innovatively conducted comparing the results between metagenomic sequencing and DNA pyrosequencing, and positive linear relationships were found with R2 values of 0.763-0.945. Meanwhile, for illustration of different TN removal performance, nitrogen metabolic pathways were also assessed. Moreover, a list of functional oxidases (EC: 1.13.11.1, EC: 1.13.11.2, EC: 1.13.11.24, EC: 1.13.12.16, EC: 1.4.3.4, EC: 1.16.3.3, EC: 1.14.14.28) was found in IWS, revealing its potential in degradation of recalcitrant organics.

RESUMO

Waste generation is becoming a global concern owing to its adverse effects on environment and human health. The utilization of waste as a feedstock for production of value-added products has opened new avenues contributing to environmental sustainability. Microorganisms have been employed for production of biosurfactants as secondary metabolites by utilizing waste streams. Utilization of waste as a substrate significantly reduces the cost of overall process. Biosurfactant(s) derived from these processes can be utilized in environmental and different industrial sectors. This review focuses on global market of biosurfactants followed by discussion on production of biosurfactants from waste streams such as agro-industrial waste and waste cooking oil. The need for waste stream derived circular bioeconomy and scale up of biosurfactant production have been narrated with applications of biosurfactants in environment and industrial sectors. Road blocks and future directions for research have also been discussed.

Rapid population growth, combined with increased industrialization, has exacerbated the issue of solid waste management. Poor management of municipal solid waste (MSW) not only has detrimental environmental consequences but also puts public health at risk and introduces several other socioeconomic problems. Many developing countries are grappling with the problem of safe disposing of large amounts of produced municipal solid waste. Unmanaged municipal solid waste pollutes the environment, so its use as a potential renewable energy source would aid in meeting both increased energy needs and waste management. This review investigates emerging strategies and monitoring tools for municipal solid waste management. Waste monitoring using high-end technologies and energy recovery from MSW has been discussed. It comprehensively covers environmental and economic relevance of waste management technologies based on innovations achieved through the integration of approaches.

Bio-based rhamnolipid production from waste streams is gaining momentum nowadays because of increasing market demand, huge range of applications and its economic and environment friendly nature. Rhamnolipid type biosurfactants are produced by microorganisms as secondary metabolites and have been used to reduce surface/interfacial tension between two different phases. Biosurfactants have been reported to be used as an alternative to chemical surfactants. Pseudomonas sp. has been frequently used for production of rhamnolipid. Various wastes can be used in production of rhamnolipid. Rhamnolipids are widely used in various industrial applications. The present review provides information about structure and nature of rhamnolipid, production using different waste materials and scale-up of rhamnolipid production. It also provides comprehensive literature on various industrial applications along with perspectives and challenges in this research area.
