RESUMO

Plumage color is an intuitive external poultry characteristic with rich manifestations and complex genetic mechanisms. In our previous study, we observed that there were more dark variations in plumage color in the F2 population derived from the hybridization of 2 white duck varieties. Therefore, based on the statistics of plumage color of 308 F2 populations, we further used the resequencing data of these individuals to detect copy number variations (CNVs) in the whole genome and conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to determine the genetic basis related to plumage color traits. The CNV detection revealed 9,337 CNVs, with an average length of 15,950 bp and a total length of 142.02 MB, accounting for approximately 12.91% of the reference genome. The CNV distribution on the chromosomes was relatively uniform, and the number of CNVs on each chromosome positively correlated with the length of the chromosome. In the pure black plumage group, 2,101 CNVs were only identified, and 1,714 were specifically identified in the pure white plumage group. Ten CNVs were randomly selected for validation using quantitative real-time PCR, and 9 CNVs had the same CNV types as predicted, with an accuracy of 90%. Based on GWAS, we identified 2 CNVs potentially associated with plumage color variations, with the associated CNV regions covering 9 genes. Enrichment analysis of these 9 candidate genes showed significant enrichment of 3 pathways (ribosome biogenesis in eukaryotes, RNA transport, and protein export) and 17 gene ontology terms. Among these, VWA5A can downregulate MITF by binding to the regulatory factors SOX10. The occurrence of CNV may indirectly contribute to duck plumage color variation by affecting the regulatory factors of the switch gene MITF in the melanogenesis pathway. These findings have improved the understanding of the genetic basis of duck plumage color variation and have been beneficial for developing and using plumage color traits in subsequent poultry breeding.

Au@Ag core-shell composites were successfully fabricated on urchin-like covalent organic frameworks (COFs), providing a platform with numerous hot spots for the detection of two categories of emerging contaminants: sulfonamide antibiotics and nanoplastics, using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Au seeds (∼10 nm) were generated on the COFs, leveraging the reducing properties of the vinyl and imino groups within the framework. This ensured the growth of dense and uniformly distributed Ag nanoparticles. The COFs exceptionally large surface area (2324 m2 g-1) and high adsorption capacity, significantly contributed to the enrichment and detection of trace pollutants. As a result, using a portable Raman spectrometer, limits of detection of 0.008 µmol L-1 for sulfamethoxazole and 0.029 mg L-1 for polystyrene nanoplastics were achieved.

The development of targeted chemotherapeutic agents against colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the most common cancers with a high mortality rate, is in a constant need. Nannocystins are a family of myxobacterial secondary metabolites featuring a 21-membered depsipeptide ring. The in vitro anti-CRC activity of natural and synthetic nannocystins was well documented, but little is known about their in vivo efficacy and if positive, the underlying mechanism of action. In this study we synthesized a nitroaromatic nannocystin through improved preparation of a key fragment, and characterized its in vitro activity and in vivo efficacy against CRC. We first described the total synthesis of compounds 2-4 featuring Heck macrocyclization to forge their 21-membered macrocycle. In a panel of 7 cancer cell lines from different tissues, compound 4 inhibited the cell viability with IC values of 1-6 nM. In particular, compound 4 (1, 2, 4 nM) inhibited the proliferation of CRC cell lines (HCT8, HCT116 and LoVo) in both concentration and time dependent manners. Furthermore, compound 4 concentration-dependently inhibited the colony formation and migration of CRC cell lines. Moreover, compound 4 induced cell cycle arrest at sub-G1 phase, apoptosis and cellular senescence in CRC cell lines. In three patient-derived CRC organoids, compound 4 inhibited the PDO with IC values of 3.68, 28.93 and 11.81 nM, respectively. In a patient-derived xenograft mouse model, injection of compound 4 (4, 8 mg/kg, i.p.) every other day for 12 times dose-dependently inhibited the tumor growth without significant change in body weight. We conducted RNA-sequencing, molecular docking and cellular thermal shift assay to elucidate the anti-CRC mechanisms of compound 4, and revealed that it exerted its anti-CRC effect at least in part by targeting AKT1.

Plants have intricate mechanisms that tailor their defence responses to pathogens. WRKY transcription factors play a pivotal role in plant immunity by regulating various defence signalling pathways. Many WRKY genes are transcriptionally activated upon pathogen attack, but how their functions are regulated after transcription remains elusive. Here, we show that OsWRKY7 functions as a crucial positive regulator of rice basal immunity against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The activity of OsWRKY7 was regulated at both translational and post-translational levels. Two translational products of OsWRKY7 were generated by alternative initiation. The full-length OsWRKY7 protein is normally degraded by the ubiquitin-proteasome system but was accumulated following elicitor or pathogen treatment, whereas the alternate product initiated from the downstream in-frame start codon was stable. Both the full and alternate OsWRKY7 proteins have transcriptional activities in yeast and rice cells, and overexpression of each form enhanced resistance to Xoo infection. Furthermore, disruption of the main AUG in rice increased the endogenous translation of the alternate stabilized form of OsWRKY7 and enhanced bacterial blight resistance. This study provides insights into the coordination of alternative translation and protein stability in the regulation of plant growth and basal defence mediated by the OsWRKY7 transcription factor, and also suggests a promising strategy to breed disease-resistant rice by translation initiation control.

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, ω-3) is an antioxidant that reduces triglyceride (TG) levels in blood, a component of cell membranes and a precursor compound of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, ω-3) and eicosatrienoic acid (DHA, ω-3). Fatty acid content is a quantitative trait regulated by multiple genes, and the key genes regulating fatty acid metabolism have not been systematically identified. This study aims at investigating the protein-encoding genes regulating ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content in chicken meat. We integrated genomics, transcriptomics and lipidomics data of Jingxing yellow chicken (JXY) to explore the interactions and associations among multiple genes involved in the regulation of fatty acid metabolism. Several key genes and pathways regulating ω-3 fatty acid metabolism in chickens were identified. The upregulation of GRB10 inhibited the mTOR signaling pathway, thereby improving the content of EPA and DHA. The downregulation of FGFR3 facilitated the conversion of ALA to EPA. Additionally, we analyzed the effects of ALA supplementation dose on glycerol esters (GLs), phospholipid (PL) and fatty acyl (FA) contents, as well as the regulatory mechanisms of nutritional responses in FFA metabolism. This study provides a basis for identifying genes and pathways that regulate the content of FFAs, and offers a reference for nutritional regulation systems in production.

The Chinese crested (CC) duck is a unique indigenous waterfowl breed, which has a crest cushion that affects its survival rate. Therefore, the CC duck is an ideal model to investigate the genetic compensation response to maintain genetic stability. In the present study, we first generated a chromosome-level genome of CC ducks. Comparative genomics revealed that genes related to tissue repair, immune function, and tumors were under strong positive selection, indicating that these adaptive changes might enhance cancer resistance and immune response to maintain the genetic stability of CC ducks. We also assembled a Chinese spot-billed (Csp-b) duck genome, and detected the structural variations (SVs) in the genome assemblies of three ducks (i.e., CC duck, Csp-b duck, and Peking duck). Functional analysis revealed that several SVs were related to the immune system of CC ducks, further strongly suggesting that genetic compensation in the anti-tumor and immune systems supports the survival of CC ducks. Moreover, we confirmed that the CC duck originated from the mallard ducks. Finally, we revealed the physiological and genetic basis of crest traits and identified a causative mutation in TAS2R40 that leads to crest formation. Overall, the findings of this study provide new insights into the role of genetic compensation in adaptive evolution.

STUDY DESIGN: Basic science laboratory study. OBJECTIVE: To identify hub genes related to bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in the ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) and analyze their functional characteristics. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The exact etiology and pathologic mechanism of OLF remain unclear. BMPs are pleiotropic osteoinductive proteins that may play a critical role in this condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The GSE106253 and GSE106256 data sets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The messenger RNA (mRNA) and long noncoding RNA expression profiles were obtained from GSE106253. The microRNA expression profiles were obtained from GSE106256. Differentially expressed genes were identified between OLF and non-OLF groups and then intersected with BMP-related genes to obtain differentially expressed BMP-related genes. The least absolute shrinkage selection operator and support vector machine recursive feature elimination were used to screen hub genes. Furthermore, a competing endogenous RNA network was constructed to explain the expression regulation of the hub genes in OLF. Finally, the protein and mRNA expression levels of the hub genes were verified using Western blot and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. RESULTS: We identified 671 Differentially expressed genes and 32 differentially expressed BMP-related genes. Hub genes ADIPOQ , SCD , SCX , RPS18 , WDR82 , and SPON1 , identified through the least absolute shrinkage selection operator and support vector machine recursive feature elimination analyses, showed high diagnostic values for OLF. Furthermore, the competing endogenous RNA network revealed the regulatory mechanisms of the hub genes. Real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that the mRNA expression of the hub genes was significantly downregulated in the OLF group compared with the non-OLF group. Western blot showed that the protein levels of ADIPOQ, SCD, WDR82 , and SPON1 were significantly downregulated, whereas those of SCX and RPS18 were significantly upregulated in the OLF group compared with the non-OLF group. CONCLUSION: This study is the first to identify BMP-related genes in OLF pathogenesis through bioinformatics analysis. ADIPOQ , SCD , SCX , RPS18 , WDR82 , and SPON1 were identified as hub genes for OLF. The identified genes may serve as potential therapeutic targets for treating patients with OLF.

Nannocystins are a family of 21-membered cyclodepsipeptides with excellent anticancer activity. However, their macrocyclic architecture poses a significant challenge to structure modification. Herein, this issue is addressed by leveraging the strategy of post-macrocyclization diversification. In particular, a novel serine-incorporating nannocystin was designed so that its appending hydroxyl group could diversify into a wide variety of side chain analogues. Such effort facilitated not only structure-activity correlation at the subdomain of interest, but also the development of a macrocyclic coumarin-labeled fluorescence probe. Uptake experiments indicated good cell permeability of the probe, and endoplasmic reticulum was identified as its subcellular localization site.

Graphene oxide (GO) shows a remarkable reinforcing effect in the application of cement composite engineering while it also harms the workability of fresh cement slurry. Hydroxylated graphene (HO-G) can effectively avoid the severe adverse effects on the fluidity of cement slurry as happened in the case of GO, but the enhancement of the flexural strength of cement composites is not as good as that of GO. As such, considering the advantages and disadvantages of these two nanomaterials in cement-based composite applications, this study investigated the effect of hybrid GO/HO-G with various ratios on the macro-properties and microstructure of cement composites in comparison with that of individual GO and HO-G. The results revealed a better synergistic improvement on the strength and durability of mortar by hybrid GO/HO-G in comparison with the individual effects of GO or HO-G. In particular, when 0.015 wt% GO and 0.015 wt% HO-G were combined as multiple-additives added into cement mortar, the improvement ratio of compressive strength and chloride migration resistance at 28 days were 40.2% and 21.9%, which were far better than those of the mortar containing a single additive (0.03 wt% GO or 0.03 wt% HO-G). Additionally, the hybrid GO/HO-G not only could greatly reduce the degrada-tion of the fluidity of mortar as happened in the case of GO, but also further reinforced the flexural strength of cement composites when compared with its HO-G counterpart. The combination of these two nanofillers as multiple-nanoadditives for cement reinforcement is quite promising due to their synergistic effect and possesses strong potential for reinforcing and functionalizing cement composites.

Aldehydes are primary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in local Chinese chicken meat and contribute green grass, fatty, citrus, and bitter almond aromas to chicken meat. To understand the genetic basis of these aldehyde VOC aromas, we used approximately 500 Chinese Jingxing Yellow (JXY) chickens to conduct genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on the flavor traits with the data of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions and deletions (INDELs). In total, 501 association variants (253 SNPs and 248 INDELs) were found to be suggestively (SNPs: p-value < 2.77e-06 and INDELs: p-value < 3.78e-05) associated with total aldehydes (the sum of nine aldehydes), hexanal, heptanal, benzaldehyde, (E,E)-2,4-nonadienal, octanal, (E)-2-decenal, nonanal, decanal, and octadecanal. Of them, six SNPs and 23 INDELs reached a genome-wide significance level (SNPs: p-value < 1.38e-07 and INDELs: p-value < 1.89e-06). Potential candidate aldehyde genes were functionally annotated for lipid metabolism, especially fatty acid-related pathways and phospholipid-related gene ontology (GO) terms. Moreover, the GWAS analysis of total aldehydes, hexanal, and nonanal generated the most significant signals, and phenotypic content differed between different genotypes at candidate gene-related loci. For total aldehydes and hexanal traits, candidate genes were annotated based on the significant and suggestive variants on chromosomes 3 and 8 with highly polymorphic linkage blocks. The following candidate genes were also identified: GALM, MAP4K3, GPCPD1, RPS6KA2, CRLS1, ASAP1, TRMT6, SDC1, PUM2, ALDH9A1, MGST3, GMEB1, MECR, LDLRAP1, GPAM and ACSL5. We also found that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (C18:2n6c linoleic acid and C18:3n3 linolenic acid) were significantly correlated with total aldehydes and hexanal contents. PUFAs are important aldehyde precursors, and consistently, our results suggested that candidate genes involved in fatty acid pathways and phospholipid GO terms were identified in association loci. This work provides an understanding of the genetic basis of aldehyde formation, which is a key flavor-forming compound.

Amino acids and fatty acids are the main precursors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in meat. The purpose of this study was to determine the main VOC components in chicken breast muscle (BM) and abdominal fat (AF) tissue, as well as the source of VOCs, to provide a basis for quality improvement of broilers. BM and AF served as experimental and control groups, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and untargeted metabolomics were employed to identify the source of VOCs. The results revealed nine VOCs in BM and AF tissues, including hexanal, octanal, and nonanal. VOCs including 1-octen-3-ol, (E,E)-2, 4-nonadienal, and benzaldehyde were significantly elevated in BM compared with AF (p < 0.05), while heptane and diethyl disulphide showed the opposite trend (p < 0.05). Levels of hexanal, heptanal, and octanal were similar in the two tissues. Metabolites of VOCs in chicken BM were investigated by weighted co-expression network analysis. However, only blue module in BM tissue was positively correlated with hexanal (r = 0.66, p = 0.01), heptanal (r = 0.67, p = 0.008), and (E,E)-2,4-nonadienal (r = 0.88, p = 3E-05). L-tyrosine, L-asparagine, adenosine, and valine were the main precursors of (E,E)-2,4-nonadienal and heptanal in BM tissue. Amino acids are the main precursors of 1-octen-3-ol, (E,E)-2, 4-nonadienal, and heptanal in chicken meat, while fatty acids are the main precursors of diethyl disulfide. However, hexanal can be synthesized from amino acids and small amounts of fatty acids as precursors. These findings expand our understanding of VOCs in chicken.

1-Octen-3-ol makes an important contribution to meat flavor. The goal of this study was to identify the metabolic pathways of 1-octen-3-ol formation in meat. We found 218 metabolites associated with 1-octen-3-ol content in 20 samples of chicken meat, including mevalonic acid (positive correlation), corticosterone (negative correlation), and other lipids and lipid-like molecules. Among these 218 metabolites, 17 metabolites were differentially expressed in different 1-octen-3-ol content groups. Similarly, 37 genes were not only differentially expressed, but were significantly correlated with 1-octen-3-ol. The regulation of HSP90AA1, PTPN9, and other genes converted more mevalonic acid to 1-octen-3-ol. Meanwhile, mevalonic acid, a key material in the synthesis of cholesterol, caused a decrease in corticosterone content, affecting ZNF414 and KLF15 gene expression. These findings reveal the effect of cholesterol on 1-octen-3-ol content, as well as a positive regulation of mevalonic acid on the production of 1-octen-3-ol in chicken meat.

BACKGROUND: Chicken intramuscular fat (IMF) content is closely related to meat quality and performance, such as tenderness and flavor. Abdominal fat (AF) in chickens is one of the main waste products at slaughter. Excessive AF reduces feed efficiency and carcass quality. RESULTS: To analyze the differential deposition of IMF and AF in chickens, gene expression profiles in the breast muscle (BM) and AF tissues of 18 animals were analyzed by differential expression analysis and weighted co-expression network analysis. The results showed that IMF deposition in BM was associated with pyruvate and citric acid metabolism through GAPDH, LDHA, GPX1, GBE1, and other genes. In contrast, AF deposition was related to acetyl CoA and glycerol metabolism through FABP1, ELOVL6, SCD, ADIPOQ, and other genes. Carbohydrate metabolism plays an essential role in IMF deposition, and fatty acid and glycerol metabolism regulate AF deposition. CONCLUSION: This study elucidated the molecular mechanism governing IMF and AF deposition through crucial genes and signaling pathways and provided a theoretical basis for producing high-quality broilers.

The role of hexanal in flavor as an indicator of the degree of oxidation of meat products is undeniable. However, the genes and pathways of hexanal formation have not been characterized in detail. In this study, we performed differential gene expression analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) on groups of Tiannong partridge chickens with different relative hexanal content in order to find the genes involved in the formation of hexanal and the specific pathways of hexanal formation. Then we confirmed the relationship of these candidate genes with hexanal using Jingxing Yellow chicken and Wenchang chicken. In this study, WGCNA revealed a module of co-expressed genes that were highly associated with the volatile organic compound hexanal. We also compared transcriptome gene expression data of samples from chicken groups with high and low relative contents of hexanal and identified a total of 651 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Among them, 356 genes were up regulated, and 295 genes were downregulated. The different biological functions associated with the DEGs, hub genes and hexanal were identified by functional analysis using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotations. Among all the hub genes in the significant module identified by WGCNA, more were enriched in the PPAR signaling pathway, the proteasome pathway, etc. Additionally, we found that DEGs and hub genes, including SLC27A1, ACOX3, NR4A1, VEGFA, JUN, EGR1, CACNB1, GADD45A and DUSP1, were co-enriched in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway, p53 signaling pathway and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway, etc. Transcriptome results of the Jingxing Yellow chicken population showed that the SLC27A1 gene was significantly associated with hexanal and enriched in the PPAR pathway. Our study provides a comprehensive insight into the key genes related to hexanal content, and can be further explored by functional and molecular studies.

However, the recent surge in fire accidents and explosions emanating from energy storage devices have been closely associated with the highly flammable components that make up these devices which have often led to the loss of life and property. Therefore, replacing flammable materials with fire retardant materials has been recognized as the critical solution to the ever-growing fire problem in these devices. This review summarizes the progress achieved so far in the field of fire retardant materials for energy storage devices. Finally, a perspective on the current state of the art is provided, and a future outlook for these fire-retardant materials, strategies, and new characterization methods is discussed.

A very low dosage of graphene oxide (GO) can enhance the mechanical durability of cement composites, but the reinforcing enhancement is highly dependent on the uniform dispersion of graphene in the matrix. Carboxylic groups at GO nanosheets have a decisive effect on GO aggregation in an alkaline cement solution because they have a strong complexation ability with aqueous Ca2+ released by cement hydration and subsequently crosslinks the adjacent graphene sheets, causing the immediate coagulation of GO. The available methods of homogeneously dispersing GO in a cement slurry cannot completely eliminate this carboxylic-crosslinking-induced GO coagulation. In this study, many hydroxyl groups were introduced onto the edge and planar nanosheets to prepare water-soluble hydroxylated graphene (HO-G) by facile ball milling. The structure of HO-G was thoroughly characterized in detail, and its dispersion behavior in pure water and Ca(OH)2 was extensively investigated. These results showed that the prepared HO-G exhibited good hydrophilicity and excellent colloidal dispersion ability against high pH and Ca2+ ions compared to GO. The effect of HO-G on the workability, mechanical strength, and chloride penetrability of a cement mortar was further studied. At a content of 0.03% by cement mass, HO-G provided 28.62 and 21.19% enhancements of compressive strength and 3.85 and 7.89% enhancements of flexural strength at 3 and 28 days, respectively, while the non-steady-state migration coefficient decreased by 31.51% compared to the reference mortar. Compared to GO, a lower dosage of HO-G exhibited a similar reinforcing effect to cement composites with little adverse impact on the fluidity of the fresh cement slurry. Moreover, the addition of HO-G could refine the pore structure, accelerate the hydration process of cement to some degree, and generate more hydration products so that the structure of the cement mortar was densified. Considering its environmentally friendly preparation, HO-G, as a promising reinforcing nanofiller, could provide a new solution to develop nanoengineered cement composites.

Anser cygnoides has a spherical crest on the beak roof, which is described as knob. However, the mechanisms affecting knob morphology are unclear. Here, we investigated the phenotypic characteristics and molecular basis of knob-size differences in Yangzhou geese. Anatomically, the knob was identified as frontal hump in the frontal area of the skull, rather than hump of upper beak. Although the frontal hump length, and height varied greatly in geese with different knob phenotypes, little was changed in the width. Histologically, knob skin in large-size knobs geese have a greater length in the stratum corneum, stratum spinosum, and stratum reticular than that in small-size knobs geese. Moveover, the 415 differentially expressed genes were found between the large knobs and small ones through transcriptome profiling. In addition, GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analysis revealed 455 significant GO terms and 210 KEGG pathways were enriched, respectively. Among these, TGF-ß signaling and thyroid hormone synthesis-signaling pathways were identified to determine knob-size phenotype. Furthermore, BMP5, DCN, TSHR and ADCY3 were recognized to involve in the growth and development of knob. Our data provide comprehensive molecular determinants of knob size phenotype, which can potentially promote the genetic improvement of goose knobs.

Chicken meat flavor has deteriorated with the increase of meat production. With the aim to identify the main aroma compounds in chicken meat, 972 Chinese local chickens are used to analyze the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in meat by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The results revealed that various VOCs present in the meat belong to aldehyde, alcohol and alkane classes. Total aldehyde content is highest in breeds significantly negatively correlated with the content of the other two classes, and their flavor can be distinguished by E-nose. Also, 9 common VOCs were shared by different breeds. Furthermore, principal component analysis identified hexanal and 1-octen-3-ol as the major VOCs according to the three classes, 9 common VOCs, or all VOCs as a whole in each breed, respectively. This study identified the main aroma VOCs in chicken meat, which could serve as a basis for breeding chickens with improved meat flavor.

The underlying molecular mechanism of lipid metabolism in peripheral blood lymphocytes from chicken infected with reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) remains poorly understood. Therefore, this scientific question was explored in vitro and in vivo. The results indicated that triglyceride content was significantly reduced, but the free fatty acid content and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 activity were significantly increased in blood lymphocytes after REV infection. By RNA sequencing, 97 known differentially expressed genes (DEG) related to lipid metabolism or glycometabolism were screened via Gene Ontology term analysis. On the basis of these 97 DEG, enriched pathways, including the peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway, were identified. Among these 97 DEG, some representative genes were related to lipolysis and fatty acid utilization (PPARG, LPL, PLIN2, ACOX1, ACSL1, FABP3, and FABP4). However, other genes related to lipid biosynthesis (ACSL3, ACSL6, DGAT2, LPIN1, and LPIN2) were downregulated. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction results confirmed the accuracy of the RNA sequencing data, and the in vivo outcome supports theses in vitro results. Our findings revealed that REV regulates fatty acid and lipid metabolism in peripheral blood lymphocytes from chicken. After the lymphocytes were infected with REV, the exogenous fatty acids were preferentially used; genes involved in fatty acid utilization were upregulated via the PPAR pathway, whereas genes involved in lipid and fatty acid biosynthesis were downregulated.

A general and metal-free visible-light-induced decarboxylative arylation procedure at room temperature was described for the construction of acylated heterocyclic derivatives, such as benzimidazo/indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones, aroylazaspiro[4.5]trienones, thioflavones, and so on. This practical arylation procedure was conducted by using 2,4,5,6-tetra(9H-carbazol-9-yl)isophthalonitrile (4CzIPN) as a photocatalyst under mild conditions, which avoided the use of an additional base, traditional heating, and metal reagents.
