RESUMO

Sulfate is the second most common nonmetallic ion in modern oceans, as its concentration dramatically increased alongside tectonic activity and atmospheric oxidation in the Proterozoic. Microbial sulfate/sulfite metabolism, involving organic carbon or hydrogen oxidation, is linked to sulfur and carbon biogeochemical cycles. However, the coevolution of microbial sulfate/sulfite metabolism and Earth's history remains unclear. Here, we conducted a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis to explore the evolutionary history of the dissimilatory sulfite reduction (Dsr) pathway. The phylogenies of the Dsr-related genes presented similar branching patterns but also some incongruencies, indicating the complex origin and evolution of Dsr. Among these genes, dsrAB is the hallmark of sulfur-metabolizing prokaryotes. Our detailed analyses suggested that the evolution of dsrAB was shaped by vertical inheritance and multiple horizontal gene transfer events and that selection pressure varied across distinct lineages. Dated phylogenetic trees indicated that key evolutionary events of dissimilatory sulfur-metabolizing prokaryotes were related to the Great Oxygenation Event (2.4-2.0 Ga) and several geological events in the "Boring Billion" (1.8-0.8 Ga), including the fragmentation of the Columbia supercontinent (approximately 1.6 Ga), the rapid increase in marine sulfate (1.3-1.2 Ga), and the Neoproterozoic glaciation event (approximately 1.0 Ga). We also proposed that the voluminous iron formations (approximately 1.88 Ga) might have induced the metabolic innovation of iron reduction. In summary, our study provides new insights into Dsr evolution and a systematic view of the coevolution of dissimilatory sulfur-metabolizing prokaryotes and the Earth's environment.

RESUMO

Low electricity generation efficiency is one of the key issues that must be addressed for the practical application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Modification of microbial electrode materials is an effective method to enhance electron transfer. In this study, magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles synthesized by co-precipitation were added to anode chambers in different doses to explore its effect on the performance of MFCs. The maximum power density of the MFCs doped with 4.5 g/L Fe3O4 (391.11 ± 9.4 mW/m2) was significantly increased compared to that of the undoped MFCs (255.15 ± 24.8 mW/m2). The COD removal efficiency of the MFCs increased from 85.8 ± 2.8% to 95.0 ± 2.1%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests revealed that the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles enhanced the biocatalytic activity of the anode. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that 4.5 g/L Fe3O4 modified anodes enriched the exoelectrogen Geobacter (31.5%), while control MFCs had less Geobacter (17.4%). Magnetite is widely distributed worldwide, which provides an inexpensive means to improve the electrochemical performance of MFCs.

RESUMO

Piezoelectric composites have shown great potential in constructing electrical microenvironment for bone healing since their integration of polymer flexibility and ceramic piezoelectric coefficient. Herein, core-shell structured BaTiO3@carbon (BT@C) hybrid nanoparticles were prepared by in situ oxidative self-polymerization and template carbonization. Then the BT@C was introduced into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) scaffolds manufactured by selective laser sintering. On one hand, the carbon shell could strengthen the local electric field loaded on BT in poling process owing to it served as a diffusion layer to provide space for charge transfer and accumulation. In this case, more electric domain within BT would be aligned along the polarization field direction and thus promoted the paly of BT's piezoelectric activity. On the other hand, the carbon shell could induce the formation of ß phase due to the sp2 hybrid-bonded carbon atoms in carbon shell forming electrostatic interaction with hydrogen atoms in PVDF chains, which further enhanced the piezoelectric response of the scaffolds. Results showed that the scaffold presented augmented piezoelectric performance with output voltage of 5.7 V and current of 79.8 nA. The improved electrical signals effectively accelerated cell proliferation and differentiation. Furthermore, the scaffold displayed improved mechanical performance due to rigid particle strengthen effect.
