There is a lack of micro evidence on whether medical insurance may optimize the household financial asset allocation by transferring health risk, despite the fact that health risk is a significant component driving families' precautionary savings. This article empirically examines the impact of health risk and social medical insurance on household risky financial asset allocation using a Probit model, based on data from the 2015-2019 China Household Finance Survey (CHFS). The findings indicate that social medical insurance, with its lower level of security, reduces the likelihood, but it can alter households' preferences for risk by lowering marginal effect of health risk. According to the findings of the heterogeneity analysis, people who live in rural and less developed areas are more likely to experience the risk-inhibiting effects of social medical insurance and health risk. The eroding and risk-suppressing impacts of social medical insurance are likewise less pronounced for households headed by women and older people, as is the health risk's suppressive influence on household involvement in risky financial markets. Compared with social medical insurance, commercial medical insurance with a higher level of coverage can dramatically increase household participation in riskier financial markets. This article provides micro-empirical evidence for the household asset allocation effect of medical insurance.

Purpose: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Off-label (OL) use of antineoplastic drugs to treat malignancies is prevalent. In this study, we quantified and characterized OL use of antineoplastic drugs to treat malignancies in China. Methods: This was a retrospective study using nationwide data collected from 2008 to 2010. Use of antineoplastic drugs was considered OL if they were used for indications not reflected in the package insert published by the National Medical Products Administration at the time of prescription. Descriptive analysis and Spearman rank correlation were used to evaluate the frequency and pattern of OL drug use. Results: In total, 51,382 patients with malignancies, 24 categories of antineoplastic drugs, and 77 types of malignancies treated with OL drugs were included in this study. Twenty commonly used antineoplastic drugs (ICD encoded as L01) were used OL in 10-61% of cases, and four commonly used endocrine therapy antineoplastic drugs (ICD encoded as L02) were used OL in 10-19% of cases. There was a significant negative correlation between the disease constituent ratio and the average OL use rate of antineoplastic drugs for various malignancies. In contrast, there was a significant positive correlation between the average OL use rate of antineoplastic drugs and the number of malignancies treated with OL drugs. Conclusion: This study provided information regarding OL use of antineoplastic drugs for treatment of malignancies, and showed that OL use was prevalent. In addition, uncommon malignancies were more likely to be treated with OL antineoplastic drugs. Furthermore, more commonly used antineoplastic drugs were more likely to be used OL.

Theanine (thea) is one of the most important plant-derived characteristic secondary metabolites and a major healthcare product because of its beneficial biological activities, such as being an antianxiety agent, promoting memory, and lowering blood pressure. Thea mostly accumulates in Camellia plants and is especially rich in Camellia sinensis (tea plant). Although some functional genes (e.g., TS, GOGAT, and GS) attributed to thea accumulation have been separately well explored in tea plants, the evolution of a regulatory module (highly interacting gene group) related to thea metabolism remains to be elaborated. Herein, a thea-associated regulatory module (TARM) was mined by using a comprehensive analysis of a weighted gene coexpression network in Camellia and non-Camellia species. Comparative genomic analysis of 84 green plant species revealed that TARM originated from the ancestor of green plants (algae) and that TARM genes were recruited from different evolutionary nodes with the most gene duplication events at the early stage. Among the TARM genes, two core transcription factors of NAC080 and LBD38 were deduced, which may play a crucial role in regulating the biosynthesis of thea. Our findings provide the first insights into the origin and evolution of TARM and indicate a promising paradigm for identifying vital regulatory genes involved in thea metabolism.

Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) represent one form of complementary and alternative medicine. The popularity and complexity in production make them attractive and vulnerable to adulteration in stages ranging from planting to production. Adulteration refers to the addition of extraneous, improper, or inferior ingredients that should not be present in TCMs. To detect and combat adulterated TCMs, supplementary testing methods (STMs), which expand the capability of routine testing standards, have been applied in China since 2003. From 2003 to 2017, a total of 184 STMs for TCMs were approved by the Chinese national drug regulatory authority. By assessing these STMs, this research intends to identify those TCMs vulnerable to adulteration, to list common adulterants, and to characterize the techniques of analysis. The results show that adulteration of TCMs can be classified into three main categories: the addition of undeclared drugs/chemical substances, substitution with non-drug components, and the addition of foreign non-drug materials. The top five therapeutic areas of TCMs vulnerable to adulteration are diabetes, calm and sleep, sexual dysfunction, pain relief, and rheumatism. A total of 166 adulterants were detected in the adulterated TCM preparations and herbal products studied here, with 158 adulterants in TCM preparations and 43 in herbal products, with 35 adulterants in common. Each STM consists of different pharmaceutical analysis techniques, including tests for physical-chemical properties, chromatography, spectroscopic techniques, and mass spectrometry. The analytical methodology of STMs relies on the combination of these techniques, with HPLC ranking the highest percentage (76.1%) and physical-chemical techniques the lowest percentage (11.4%). This research shows that STMs have played a crucial role in combating adulterated TCMs. However, STMs represent merely a product testing-centered regulatory strategy. The inspection of cultivation and manufacturing processes should also be strengthened. More importantly, the awareness and self-discipline of TCM manufacturers in implementing good manufacturing practices and regulating the planting and cultivation of raw materials should be improved.
