RESUMO

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the prognostic value of Cyclin-dependent kinases 6 (CDK6) expression levels and establish a machine learning-based radiomics model for predicting the expression levels of CDK6 in high-grade gliomas (HGG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical parameters and genomic data were extracted from 310 HGG patients in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and 27 patients in the Repository of Molecular Brain Neoplasia Data (REMBRANDT) database. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression, as well as Kaplan-Meier analysis, were performed for prognosis analysis. The correlation between immune cell Infiltration with CDK6 was assessed using spearman correlation analysis. Radiomic features were extracted from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) in the Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) database (n = 82) and REMBRANDT database (n = 27). Logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM) were employed to establish the radiomics model for predicting CDK6 expression. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were utilized to assess the predictive performance of the radiomics model. Generate radiomic scores (RS) based on the LR model. An RS-based nomogram was constructed to predict the prognosis of HGG. RESULTS: CDK6 was significantly overexpressed in HGG tissues and was related to lower overall survival. A significant elevation in infiltrating M0 macrophages was observed in the CDK6 high group (P < 0.001). The LR radiomics model for the prediction of CDK6 expression levels (AUC=0.810 in the training cohort, AUC = 0.784 after cross-validation, AUC=0.750 in the testing cohort) was established utilizing three radiomic features. The predictive efficiencies of the RS-based nomogram, as measured by AUC, were 0.769 for 1-year, 0.815 for 3-year, and 0.780 for 5-year, respectively. CONCLUSION: The expression level of CDK6 can impact the prognosis of patients with HGG. The expression level of HGG can be noninvasively prognosticated utilizing a radiomics model.

RESUMO

We aimed to study whether the Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) expression is correlated with the prognosis of patients with high-grade gliomas (HGGs) and predict its expression level prior to surgery, by constructing radiomic models. Clinical and gene expression data of 310 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were included for gene-based prognostic analysis. Among them, contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (T1WI + C) from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) with genomic data was selected from 82 patients for radiomic models, including support vector machine (SVM) and logistic regression (LR) models. Furthermore, the nomogram incorporating radiomic signatures was constructed to evaluate its clinical efficacy. BTK was identified as an independent risk factor for HGGs through univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Three radiomic features were selected to construct the SVM and LR models, and the validation set showed area under curve (AUCs) values of 0.711 (95% CI, 0.598-0.824) and 0.736 (95% CI, 0.627-0.844), respectively. The median survival times of the high Rad_score and low-Rad_score groups based on LR model were 15.53 and 23.03 months, respectively. In addition, the total risk score of each patient was used to construct a predictive nomogram, and the AUCs calculated from the corresponding time-dependent ROC curves were 0.533, 0.659, and 0.767 for 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. BTK is an independent risk factor associated with poor prognosis in patients, and the radiomic model constructed in this study can effectively and non-invasively predict preoperative BTK expression levels and patient prognosis based on T1WI + C.

RESUMO

We proposed and demonstrated a metasurface based terahertz polarizer consisting of an optically responsive nanocomposite and a flexible base body, which fulfilled the function of linear-to-circular polarization conversion in transmission mode. Meanwhile, as the dynamic and stretchable materials enable the active manipulation of conversion points, evident frequency shifts for circular polarization transformation were discovered by applying laser irradiation and tension. Hence the modulation of conversion points covered a broadband with combination of those two external excitations. This THz polarization convertor may find its applications in polarization controls and beam steering, which also provides a low-cost and large-scale manufacturable method to achieve versatile active THz devices.

RESUMO

We previously reported that prolonged exposure to an enriched environment (EE) enhances hippocampal synaptic plasticity, with one of the significant mechanistic pathways being activation of ß2-adrenergic receptor (ß2-AR) signaling, thereby mitigating the synaptotoxic effects of soluble oligomers of amyloid ß-protein (oAß). However, the detailed mechanism remained elusive. In this work, we recorded field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSP) in the CA1 region of mouse hippocampal slices treated with or without toxic Aß-species. We found that pharmacological activation of ß2-AR, but not ß1-AR, selectively mimicked the effects of EE in enhancing LTP and preventing oAß-induced synaptic dysfunction. Mechanistic analyses showed that certain histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors mimicked the benefits of EE, but this was not seen in ß2-AR knockout mice, suggesting that activating ß2-AR prevents oAß-mediated synaptic dysfunction via changes in histone acetylation. EE or activation of ß-ARs each decreased HDAC2, whereas Aß oligomers increased HDAC2 levels in the hippocampus. Further, oAß-induced inflammatory effects and neurite degeneration were prevented by either ß2-AR agonists or certain specific HDAC inhibitors. These preclinical results suggest that activation of ß2-AR is a novel potential therapeutic strategy to mitigate oAß-mediated features of AD.

RESUMO

Background: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common form of lung cancer and is often accompanied by brain metastasis (BM). The heterogeneity of the tumor renders all current conventional treatments less effective. This study aims to dissect tumor cell heterogeneity and identify potential therapeutic targets. Methods: We conducted single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) in 8 patients with treatment-naïve LUAD BM and included scRNA-seq data of 10 primary LUAD samples and their matched adjacent normal tissue from GSE131907 to determine the tumor cell heterogeneity. Results: Our analyses revealed tumor cells derived from brain metastases were more heterogeneous. Tumor cells from BM harbored significantly more copy number variants (CNVs), and cells of magnoid subtype were the critical source of malignant cells both in BM and the primary lung tumor. Pseudo-time trajectory analysis revealed that malignant cells had upregulated genes enriched for cell cycle and cell division. Integrated analysis of tumor cells revealed 2 distinct malignant cell clusters (cluster 4 and cluster 6) and their marker genes. The signatures identified in the single-cell profile had prognostic value in the bulk tumor profiles. Moreover, the signature of cluster 4 had significant prognostic value in predicting patients surviving longer than 3.5 years, while the signature of cluster 6 showed better predictive ability within 1 year. Magnoid-type cells are most likely to develop into the riskiest cell type and potentially promote tumor progression. Conclusions: scRNA profiling that integrates LUAD BM and primary LUAD can provide information on those malignant cells with BM potential, offering additional prognostic information at cellular level, and may serve as a foundational resource for further tumor cell dissection and therapeutic target exploration.

RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease affecting the elderly, frequently causes cognitive impairment and memory decline, and there are currently no effective therapeutic drugs available. Glutamate excitotoxicity is one of the pathogeneses of AD, and there is evidence that glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) can significantly reduce glutamate concentrations in the hippocampi of mice, but its role in APP/PS1 transgenic mice is unknown. We investigated the improvement of neurological function and related protein expression following subcutaneous injection of GOT in mice with AD. We performed immunohistochemical staining on the brain tissue of 3-, 6-, and 12-month-old mice and found that the content of the ß-amyloid protein Aß1-42 in the 6 months old GOT treatment group was significantly reduced. Meanwhile, the APP-GOT group outperformed the APP group in the water maze and spatial object recognition experiments. The number of neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area of the APP-GOT group increased when compared to the APP group according to Nissl staining. Electron microscopic examination of the hippocampal CA1 area demonstrated that the number of synapses in the APP-GOT group was more than that in the APP group, and the mitochondrial structure was relatively complete. Finally, the protein content of the hippocampus was detected. In comparison to the APP group, SIRT1 content increased in the APP-GOT group whereas Aß1-42 content decreased, and Ex527 could reverse this trend. These results suggest that GOT can significantly improve the cognitive function of mice in the early stage of AD, and the underlying mechanism may be through decreasing Aß1-42 and increasing SIRT1 expressions.

RESUMO

More clinical evidence is needed regarding the relative priority of treatments for brain metastases (BMs) from EGFR/ALK-negative/unselected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched. Overall survival (OS), central nervous system progression-free survival (CNS-PFS), and objective response rate (ORR) were selected for Bayesian network meta-analyses. We included 25 eligible randomized control trials (RCTs) involving 3,054 patients, investigating nine kinds of treatments for newly diagnosed BMs and seven kinds of treatments for previously treated BMs. For newly diagnosed BMs, adding chemotherapy, EGFR-TKIs, and other innovative systemic agents (temozolomide, nitroglycerin, endostar, enzastaurin, and veliparib) to radiotherapy did not significantly prolong OS than radiotherapy alone; whereas radiotherapy + nitroglycerin showed significantly better CNS-PFS and ORR. Surgery could significantly prolong OS (hazard ratios [HR]: 0.52, 95% credible intervals: 0.41-0.67) and CNS-PFS (HR: 0.32, 95% confidence interval: 0.18-0.59) compared with radiotherapy alone. For previously treated BMs, pembrolizumab + chemotherapy, nivolumab + ipilimumab, and cemiplimab significantly prolonged OS than chemotherapy alone. Pembrolizumab + chemotherapy also showed better CNS-PFS and ORR than chemotherapy. In summary, immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based therapies, especially ICI-combined therapies, showed promising efficacies for previously treated BMs from EGFR/ALK-negative/unselected NSCLC. The value of surgery should also be emphasized. The result should be further confirmed by RCTs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adult brainstem high-grade glioma (HGG) is a refractory disease, and the treatment strategy of resection is still controversial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prognostic value of brainstem HGG resection in adults. METHODS: We collected 126,386 samples from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 1998 and 2016, and screened 973 patients diagnosed with adult brainstem HGG, who were in turn, grouped into 899 cases of non-resections and 74 cases of resections. Competing risk models were used to screen independent prognostic factors. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to reduce the influence of confounding factors. Conditional survival (CS) rate was considered to evaluate the changes in overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) of patients with HGG over time. RESULTS: Based on the competing risk model and PSM, univariate analysis showed that age ≥ 45 years and male gender were poor prognostic factors for adult brainstem HGG. No previous history of glioma was a beneficial factor. Multivariate analysis revealed only the absence of a history of glioma to be a favorable prognostic factor. Considering the CS rate of the resection group, after the patient had survived for 3 years, the OS and DSS remained unchanged at 100% during the fourth and fifth years, whereas in the non-resection group, the OS and DSS of the patients were 82% and 74%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Adult brainstem HGG resection has a poor prognosis in the early stage; however, patients have a potentially significant survival benefit after 3 years of survival.

RESUMO

Two terahertz metamaterials were joined by a conductivity variable VO2 patch to obtain a metamaterial dimer. By applying voltage or heat to the VO2 patches, active modulation of terahertz wave could be achieved. A cut-wire metamaterial was placed adjacent to the VO2 joined dimer to affect its electromagnetic response. It was found that the cut wire could heavily impact the resonance mode of the VO2 joined dimer, which gives dual resonance dips in transmission spectrum for both insulating and conducting states of VO2 patches. As a result, by tuning the conductivity of VO2, active dual band phase modulation could be achieved with high transmission window by this dimer-cut wire coupling system.

RESUMO

While zebrafish (Danio rerio) have been accepted worldwide for evaluating chemical hazards to aquatic vertebrates, and in some countries it is mandated to generate fish toxicity data using native species, such as Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) in China. This represents an additional regulatory constraint that may cause redundant tests, additional animal uses, and higher costs. Previous studies showed that juvenile G. rarus was more sensitive than zebrafish juveniles and embryos to metals. To better understand the sensitivity of G. rarus to organic chemicals, we selected 29 fragrance ingredients belonging to various chemical classes and with differing physicochemical properties, for which good quality zebrafish acute toxicity data were available and tested them with juvenile G. rarus and embryo D. rerio using the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development test guidelines. Chemical toxicity distribution (CTD) and chemical ratio distribution (CRD) models were established to systematically compare the sensitivity between juveniles of G. rarus and D. rerio, as well as between D. rerio embryos and juveniles. The results of the CTD models showed that for tested chemicals, the sensitivity of juvenile G. rarus was similar to that of D. rerio juveniles and embryos. The CRD comparisons revealed that juvenile G. rarus was slightly less sensitive by a factor of ~2 than juvenile D. rerio to ingredients belonging to Verhaar class 3 and Ecological Structure Activity Relationship ester class, while comparable to other chemicals. These comparative experiments demonstrated that fish toxicity data with G. rarus can be submitted for use in chemical registrations outside China, which would avoid repeating animal tests using D. rerio. Meanwhile, the similar sensitivity of zebrafish juveniles and embryos to fragrance ingredients confirmed the suitability of replacing juveniles by zebrafish embryos. RESUMO

Although the spin Hall effect provides a pathway for efficient and fast current-induced manipulation of magnetization, application of spin-orbit torque magnetic random access memory with low power dissipation is still limited to spin Hall materials with low spin Hall angles or very high resistivities. This work reports a group of spin Hall materials, Pt1 -x (TiO2 )x nanocomposites, that combines a giant spin Hall effect with a low resistivity. The spin Hall angle of Pt1 -x (TiO2 )x in an yttrium iron garnet/Pt1 -x (TiO2 )x double-layer heterostructure is estimated from a combination of ferromagnetic resonance, spin pumping, and inverse spin Hall experiments. A giant spin Hall angle 1.607 ± 0.04 is obtained in a Pt0.94 (TiO2 )0.06 nanocomposite film, which is an increase by an order of magnitude compared with 0.051 ± 0.002 in pure Pt thin film under the same conditions. The great enhancement of spin Hall angle is attributed to strong side-jump induced by TiO2 impurities. These findings provide a new nanocomposite spin Hall material combining a giant spin Hall angle, low resistivity and excellent process compatibility with semiconductors for developing highly efficiency current-induced magnetization switching memory devices and logic devices.

RESUMO

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have attracted worldwide attention due to their ubiquitous occurrence, bioaccumulation, and toxicological effects, yet the fate of PFASs in a lotic ecosystem is largely unknown. To elucidate spatial distribution and multimedia partitioning of legacy and emerging PFASs in a lotic river flowing into an estuary, PFASs were synchronously analyzed in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment, and biota samples collected along Guangzhou reach of the Pearl River, South China. Geographically, the concentrations of PFASs in the water phase showed a decreasing trend from the upper and middle sections (urban area) to the down section (suburban area close to estuary) of the river. While perfluorooctanoic acid predominated in water and SPM, more diverse compositions were observed in sediment and biota with the increase in contributions of long-chain PFASs. Field-derived sediment-water partitioning coefficients (Kd) and bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of PFASs increased with the increase in perfluorinated carbons. Besides hydrophobicity, water pH and salinity significantly affected the multimedia partitioning of PFASs in a lotic ecosystem. In addition, 87 homologues (63 classes) were identified as emerging PFASs in four media using suspect analysis. Interestingly, Kd and BAF of the emerging PFASs were often higher than legacy PFASs containing the same perfluorinated carbons, raising a special concern on the environmental risk of emerging PFASs.

RESUMO

Metamaterials have shown great potential for modulation on the amplitude, phase and polarization of the terahertz wave. Here vacancies were introduced into the metamaterial arrays to tune the mutual interaction between the constituent resonators, which could heavily affect the electromagnetic response of the whole metamaterial arrays. We show that the introduced vacancies in the metamaterial arrays can effectively affect the resonance mode of the metamaterial arrays. Based upon the vacancy mediated coupling, a silicon-metal hybrid metamaterial arrays were designed to achieve active modulation of propagating terahertz waves.

RESUMO

In recent years, the use of quantum dots (QDs) cocatalysts to improve the hydrogen evolution activity from the water splitting of photocatalysts has become a popular research topic. Herein, we successfully prepared a novel 0 dimension/2 dimension (0D/2D) heterojunction nanocomposite (denoted Ag2S quantum dots (QDs)/g-C3N4) with excellent photocatalytic performance by anchoring the Ag2S QDs cocatalyst on the surface of g-C3N4 through a self-assembly strategy. Ag2S QDs with an average particle size of approximately 5.8 nm were uniformly and tightly modified on g-C3N4. The Ag2S QDs/g-C3N4 composite with 0.5 wt% Ag2S QDs loading achieved the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 471.1 µmol·g-1·h-1 with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.48% at 405 nm. Such remarkable hydrogen evolution activity far exceeded that of undoped g-C3N4 and Ag2S nanoparticles (NPs)/g-C3N4. Moreover, it was 2.04 times the activity of Pt/g-C3N4 with Pt as the cocatalyst. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the energy band broadening of Ag2S QDs caused by the quantum size effect and the convenient and effective charge transfer between g-C3N4 and Ag2S QDs cocatalysts. The mechanism underlying the enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution activity was further proposed. This study demonstrates that semiconductor-based quantum dots are strong candidates for excellent cocatalysts in photocatalysis.

RESUMO

Single-atom photocatalysis has been demonstrated as a novel strategy to promote heterogeneous reactions. There is a diversity of monoatomic metal species with specific functions; however, integrating representative merits into dual-single-atoms and regulating cooperative photocatalysis remain a pressing challenge. For dual-single-atom catalysts, enhanced photocatalytic activity would be realized through integrating bifunctional properties and tuning the synergistic effect. Herein, dual-single-atoms supported on conjugated porous carbon nitride polymer are developed for effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction, featuring the function of cobalt (Co) and ruthenium (Ru). A series of in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations are conducted for quantitative analysis of structure-performance correlation. It is concluded that the active Co sites facilitate dynamic charge transfer, while the Ru sites promote selective CO2 surface-bound interaction during CO2 photoreduction. The combination of atom-specific traits and the synergy between Co and Ru lead to the high photocatalytic CO2 conversion with corresponding apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 2.8% at 385 nm, along with a high turnover number (TON) of more than 200 without addition of any sacrificial agent. This work presents an example of identifying the roles of different single-atom metals and regulating the synergy, where the two metals with unique properties collaborate to further boost the photocatalytic performance.

RESUMO

Pituitary adenomas, the most common type of lesion in the sellar region, rank third among all brain tumors, with an incidence of 73-94 cases per 100,000 individuals. Due to its high resolution, MRI is highly efficient in brain imaging and has emerged as the most appropriate method for tumor consistency evaluation. The present study aimed to assess the levels of collagen types I and III in pituitary adenomas with different consistencies and to determine the value of T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) MRI for predicting tumor consistency. A total of 55 patients with pituitary adenomas were divided into the soft and firm tumor groups according to intraoperative tumor consistency. The ratio of the tumor to Pons' signal intensities on T2WI scans was determined. A receiver operating characteristic curve was plotted to assess the specificity and sensitivity of T2WI in predicting tumor consistency. Average optical density (AOD) values for collagen types I (0.046±0.008 vs. 0.052±0.012, P=0.033) and III (0.044±0.008 vs. 0.050±0.010, P=0.016) were significantly lower in the soft tumor group compared with those in the firm tumor group. There was no significant difference in the ratio of the tumor to Pons' signal intensities on T2WI scans. The area under the ROC curve was 0.595±0.078 (P=0.250). The maximum tumor diameter significantly differed between the soft and firm tumor groups (P=0.001). AOD values for collagen types I and III were significantly correlated with the maximum tumor diameter (P<0.001). The amounts of collagen types I and III were elevated in firm pituitary tumors compared with the soft ones. The ratio of tumor to Pons' signal intensities on T2WI scans was not able to accurately predict tumor consistency. The size of pituitary adenomas may be associated with the expression levels of collagen types I and III.

RESUMO

Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity (FET) test was proposed as an alternative to the traditional test methods using larval or adult fish. However, whether fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) embryo is appropriate for FET remains uncertain. In the present study, ecological threshold of toxicological concern (ecoTTC) values and uncertainty factors (UFs) for each Verhaar et al. category in P. promelas were identified by employing probabilistic ecological risk assessment (PERA) approach with chemical toxicity distributions (CTDs). The sensitivity among different life stages and toxicity among different mode of actions (MOAs) classes were comprehensively compared by CTD comparisons. The results showed that embryo exhibited the less or similar sensitivity compared to larva or adult for Verhaar et al. MOA classes (1-4) while adults were more sensitive, followed by embryo than larval for non-classified chemicals. Considering growth effect as endpoint to class 1, class 3, and non-classified chemicals on P. promelas embryo and larva was more sensitive than mortality. Non-classified chemicals especially inorganic compounds were most toxic to P. promelas embryo for the four concerned Verharr et al. MOA-specific chemical classes. This study also derived uncertainty factors (UFs) as 26.5 (9.8, 109) for embryo-to-larva, 6.26 (3.94, 11.0) for embryo-to-adult, 15.6 (10.1, 36.1) for mortality-to-growth, and 3.03 (1.86, 7.08) for mortality-to-reproduction, which can be applied for extrapolations of life stage-to-life stage and effect-to-effect to reduce the underestimating and overestimating risk by the use of default UF such as 10, 100 or 1000. Our findings are vital for feasibility of FET test of P. promelas for ecotoxicity testing and ecological risk assessment for chemicals with different MOAs.

RESUMO

In this paper, we have reported a multifunctional device from graphene/TiO2/p-Si heterojunction, followed by its systematical analysis of optical response in a device under ultraviolet-visible-infrared band and transmission changes of terahertz waves in the 0.3-1.0 THz band under different bias voltages. It is found that photodetector in the "back-to-back" p-n-p energy band structure has a seriously unbalanced distribution of photogenerated carriers in the vertical direction when light is irradiated from the graphene side. So this ensures a higher optical gain of the device in the form of up to 3.6 A/W responsivities and 4 × 1013 Jones detectability under 750 nm laser irradiation. Besides, the addition of TiO2 layer in this terahertz modulator continuously widens the carrier depletion region under negative bias, thereby realizing modulation of the terahertz wave, making the modulation depth up to 23% under - 15 V bias. However, almost no change is observed in the transmission of terahertz wave when a positive bias is applied. A similar of an electronic semiconductor diode is observed that only allows the passage of terahertz wave for negative bias and blocks the positive ones.

RESUMO

Glioma is the most common malignancy of the nervous system with high rates of recurrence and mortality, even after surgery. The 5-year survival rate is only about 5%. NEK8 is involved in multiple biological processes in a variety of cancers; however, its role in glioma is still not clear. In the current study, we evaluated the prognostic value of NEK8, as well as its role in the pathogenesis of glioma. Using a bioinformatics approach and RNA-seq data from public databases, we found that NEK8 expression is elevated in glioma tissues; we further verified this result by RT-PCR, Western blotting and immunochemistry using clinical samples. Functional enrichment analyses of genes with correlated expression indicated that elevated NEK8 expression is associated with increased immune cell infiltration in glioma and may affect the tumour microenvironment via the regulation of DNA damage/repair. Survival analyses revealed that high levels of NEK8 are associated with a poorer prognosis; higher WHO grade, IDH status, 1p/19q codeletion, age and NEK8 were identified as an independent prognostic factor. These findings support the crucial role of NEK8 in the progression of glioma via effects on immune cell infiltration and suggest that it is a new prognostic biomarker.

RESUMO

Chemical production and consumption in Asia are increasing at an unprecedented rate, calling for regulations on chemical management. Under the New Chemical Substance Notification in China, information on ecotoxicological effects of chemicals is mandatory for the simplified registration of chemicals with the requirement that one ecotoxicological test is conducted locally. It is now mandatory to use the native fish species Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus). However, its chemical sensitivity compared to that of fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) or zebrafish (Danio rerio) is still unclear. We performed a holistic literature review on toxicity data with G. rarus from 1997 to 2020. Species sensitivity among G. rarus, P. promelas, and D. rerio and life-stage sensitivity of G. rarus were systematically investigated for various chemicals using both chemical ratio distribution and probabilistic chemical toxicity distribution approaches. Comparatively, the Chinese native fish species G. rarus was more sensitive than D. rerio, particularly to metals. Juvenile and adult G. rarus were more sensitive than its larvae and embryos. The observed lower sensitivity of G. rarus embryo was likely due to the thick embryonic chorion, discrepant methods of collecting embryos, and the paucity of toxicity data, implying the necessity to standardize G. rarus embryo tests and validate the sensitivity with various types of chemicals. This unique review allows us to conclude that G. rarus studies could be used in worldwide registrations and that further investigations are needed to use G. rarus embryos as alternatives to the fish test.
