RESUMO

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a common minimally invasive technique used to treat varicose veins. The most commonly used laser wavelengths for EVLA/EVLT of varicose veins are 810 nm and 1470 nm. The laser pulse frequency is typically set to continuous wave (CW) mode, with a pulse duration of a few milliseconds (ms) delivered in a radial mode. The energy delivered per pulse is typically set between 40 and 120 Joules, with a power setting of 10 to 30 watts and an intensity setting of 40 to 120 J/cm2. The controversy exists regarding the benefits of performing saphenofemoral junction (SFJ) ligation prior to EVLA to decrease the recurrence rate of varicose veins. This meta-analysis aims to investigate the effectiveness of combining EVLA with high ligation versus using EVLA alone in treating lower extremity varicose veins. We conducted a systematic search of four databases from their inception until July 1, 2022, for randomized controlled trials and prospective controlled trials evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of EVLA with or without high ligation for the treatment of lower extremity varicose veins. In analyzing binary data, rate difference (RD) is used, while odds ratio (OR) is used for evaluating the confidence interval (CI) of binary data. A P value of less than 0.05 is deemed statistically significant. Heterogeneity is assessed using the chi-square test. If the I2 statistic, which reflects statistical heterogeneity, is greater than 50%, a random-effects model should be used. In the absence of significant statistical heterogeneity, a fixed-effects model should be used if I2 is less than 50%. We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool to assess the quality of the studies and Review Manager 5.4 for the primary and secondary outcome analysis. The meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook. There were no significant differences in the rate of major complications (RR = 1.63; 95% CI, 0.40-6.69; P = 0.50) or in the frequency of minor complications (RR = 1.07, 95% CI, 0.87-1.31; P = 0.52) between the EVLA with high ligation (EVLA/HL) group and the EVLA group. However, the rate of vein occlusion was significantly lower in the EVLA group than in the EVLA/HL group (RR = 1.06; 95% CI, 1.03-1.09; P = 0.0004). Our meta-analysis indicates that combining EVLA with high ligation provides stable long-term clinical efficacy in treating varicose veins of the lower extremities, although it increases the invasiveness of the surgery. The use of EVLA alone may be less effective in preventing vein occlusion.

RESUMO

Background: There have been many studies on long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as tumor markers. LINC00958 is a lncRNA that has been studied in a variety of tumor types. This meta-analysis aims to explore the relationship between LINC00958 and clinical prognosis and pathological characteristics in various cancers. Methods: We searched for related studies from PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library and Embase (up to October 2021). The association of LINC00958 expression with clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis was evaluated using the pooled odds ratios (ORs) or hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: 16 studies (1,121 patients) were included in this meta-analysis, we found that overexpression of LINC00958 was associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.84; 95% CI: 1.36-2.49; p < 0.001). We also found that LINC00958 overexpression was correlated with positive lymph node metastasis (LNM) (OR = 1.91; 95% CI: 1.39-2.63; p < 0.001), advanced degree of infiltration (OR = 1.64; 95% CI: 1.11-2.41; p = 0.013), advanced tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage (OR = 2.80; 95% CI: 1.48-5.33; p = 0.002). Other clinicopathological characteristics have no obvious correlation, such as age, sex, tumor size, distant metastasis, and differentiation grade (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In summary, the overexpression of LINC00958 is significantly correlated with poor OS, positive LNM, advanced degree of infiltration, and advanced TNM stage. LINC00958 might serve as a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for a variety of cancers. However, rigorous studies with large sample sizes are still needed for further research and demonstration.

RESUMO

Background: Dysregulation of long non-coding (lncRNA) has been reported in various solid tumors. HOXA cluster antisense RNA 2 (HOXA-AS2) is a newly identified lncRNA with abnormal expression in several human malignancies. However, its prognostic value remains controversial. This meta-analysis synthesized available data to clarify the association between HOXA-AS2 expression levels and clinical prognosis in multiple cancers. Methods: Four public databases (Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library) were used to identify eligible studies. Hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined to assess the correlation of HOXA-AS2 expression with survival outcomes and clinicopathological features of cancer patients. Publication bias was measured using Begg's funnel plot and Egger's regression test, and the stability of the combined results was measured using sensitivity analysis. Additionally, multiple public databases were screened and extracted to validate the results of this meta-analysis. Results: The study included 20 studies, containing 1331 patients. The meta-analysis showed that the overexpression of HOXA-AS2 was associated with poor overall survival (HR = 2.06, 95% CI 1.58-2.69, p < 0.001). In addition, the high expression of HOXA-AS2 could forecast advanced tumor stage (OR = 3.89, 95% CI 2.90-5.21, p < 0.001), earlier lymph node metastasis (OR = 3.48, 95% CI 2.29-5.29, p < 0.001), larger tumor size (OR = 2.36, 95% CI 1.52-3.66, p < 0.001) and earlier distant metastasis (OR = 3.54, 95% CI 2.00-6.28, p < 0.001). However, other clinicopathological features, including age (OR = 1.09, 95% CI 0.86-1.38, p = 0.467), gender (OR = 0.92, 95% CI 0.72-1.18, p = 0.496), depth of invasion (OR = 2.13, 95% CI 0.77-5.90, p = 0.146) and differentiation (OR = 1.02, 95% CI 0.65-1.59, p = 0.945) were not significantly different from HOXA-AS2 expression. Conclusion: Our study showed that the overexpression of HOXA-AS2 was related to poor overall survival and clinicopathological features. HOXA-AS2 may serve as a potential prognostic indicator and therapeutic target for tumor treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare compression with no-compression, after radiofrequency endothermal ablation of a truncal varicose vein. METHODS: Databases, such as PubMed, Embase, Cochran Library, and Web of Science, were independently searched by two researchers for relevant literature, preliminary screening was performed, and the full text was read to select studies that met the inclusion criteria. The quality of the included literature was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool, and meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4. RESULTS: A total of four randomized controlled trials were included and a total of 552 patients were involved. Among them, 273 patients were in the compression group and 279 in the no-compression group. Meta-analysis results showed that the pain using the 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale was lower in the compression group than the pain in the no-compression group (MD = -4.22, 95% CI = -7.95 - -0.49, p = 0.03). No significant differences in terms of occlusion rate (RR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.96-1.02, p = 0.55), Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (MD = 0.46, 95% CI = -0.80-1.73, p = 0.47), and complications (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.61-2.94, p = 0.47) were observed between groups. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests that compression therapy reduced post-operative pain compared to the no-compression group. However, no additional advantages were observed in terms of occlusion rates, quality of life scores and complications.

RESUMO

Microbial communities of soil aggregate-size fractions were explored with molecular and networking assays for topsoil samples from a clayey rice paddy under long-term fertilization treatments. The treatments included no fertilizer (NF) as control, chemical fertilizer only (CF), chemical fertilizer with swine manure (CFM), and chemical fertilizer with rice straw return (CFS). Following a wet-sieving protocol, water-stable aggregates were separated into size fractions of large macroaggregates (L-MacA, >2,000 µm), macroaggregates (MacA, 2,000-250 µm), microaggregates (MicA, 250-53 µm), fine microaggregates (F-MicA, 53-2 µm), and fine clay (F-Clay, <2 µm). Mass proportion was 32.3-38.2% for F-MicA, 23.0-31.5% for MacA, 19.0-23.1% for MicA, 9.1-12.0% for L-MacA, and 4.9-7.5% for F-Clay, respectively. The proportion of MacA was increased, but F-Clay was reduced by fertilization, whereas the mean weight diameter was increased by 8.0-16.2% from 534.8 µm under NF to 621.5 µm under CFM. Fertilization affected bacterial 16S rRNA and fungal 18S rRNA gene abundance in F-MicA and F-Clay but not in aggregates in size larger than 53 µm. However, bacterial and fungal community α-diversities and community structures were quite more divergent among the fertilization treatments in all size fractions. Organic carbon and gene abundance of bacteria and fungi were enriched in both L-MacA and MacA but depleted in F-Clay, whereas microbial Shannon diversity was rarely changed by fraction size under the four treatments. L-MacA and MacA contained more bacteria of r-strategists and copiotrophs, whereas F-MicA and F-Clay were demonstrated with a higher abundance of K-strategists and oligotrophs. Guilds of parasitic and litter saprotrophic fungi were enriched in F-MicA but depleted in L-MacA. Furthermore, most of bacterial and fungal operational taxonomic units were strongly interacted in L-MacA and MacA rather than in MicA and F-Clay. Thus, MacA acted as micro-hotspots enriched with functional and networked microbial communities, which were enhanced with organic/inorganic fertilization in the rice paddy.

RESUMO

Objective: We aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of prophylactic sac embolization during endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in patients suffering from abdominal aortic aneurysms. Methods: We performed a systematic literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, EMbase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP, Wanfang and China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) to identify studies evaluating the outcomes of sac embolization vs. no embolization among patients who had received EVAR. The time limit of the search was from the establishing database to July 22, 2022. Outcome measures involved the type II endoleak rate, the other endoleak rate, the reintervention rate, mortality, and operation time. Fixed (no heterogeneity) or random effects models were constructed for each outcome. The outcomes are represented as the odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Among the 2,622 studies screened, 13 studies involving 747 participants were included in the review. The incidence of early-term type II endoleak (OR = 0.2, 95% CI (0.13,0.31), P < 0.00001), mid-term type II endoleak (OR = 0.23, 95% CI (0.15,0.37), P < 0.00001), late-term type II endoleak (OR = 0.27, 95% CI (0.16,0.46), P < 0.00001) and reintervention (OR = 0.50, 95% CI (0.37,0.78), P = 0.002) within the sac embolization group were significantly lower than those in the non-embolization group. No significant differences were observed between the two groups were found for the other endoleak rates (OR = 0.67, 95% CI (0.34,1.32), P = 0.25), mortality (OR = 0.64, 95% CI (0.25,1.66), P = 0.36) and operation time operation (MD = 5.76, 95% CI (-8.30,19.83), P = 0.42). Conclusions: EVAR combined with sac embolization effectively reduces the incidence of type II endoleak and the reintervention rate without enhancing the operation time. Therefore, more high-quality studies are still needed for validation due to the limited amount and quality of included literature. RESUMO

Heavy metal(loid) contamination represents an immense challenge in sustainable agriculture. Arsenic, in particular, poses a great risk to the quality of agricultural products (e.g., rice grain). The sulfur amendment is recommended as an effective practice to remediate heavy metal(loid)-polluted soil, given its function in enhancing crop production and alleviating heavy metal(loid) accumulation in the plant. This study aims to investigate the roles of sulfur fertilizer on arsenic accumulation in rice and to explore the key mechanisms. In this study, Elemental sulfur (ES) and gypsum sulfur (GS) were chosen as sulfur fertilizers, with different application rates (0, 0.15, and 0.30 g S kg-1 soil). The results showed that ES and GS treatment significantly increased rice grain yield by 46.6-59.7% and significantly reduced the rice grain arsenic content by more than 39.1%. The sulfur treatment decreased soil pe + pH values. ES treatment increased the availability of arsenic in the bulk soil, whereas GS showed little effect. Sulfur application promoted the formation of iron and manganese plaques, which could suppress the migration of arsenic from soil to rice root. In addition, the sulfur treatment decreased the arsenic that migrating from rice roots to grains by 33.3-66.7%. This study indicates that sulfur application could increase arsenic availability in paddy soil; however, it can inhibit arsenic accumulation in rice grains via increasing the root plaques content and inhibiting the translocation of arsenic from roots to grains.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Manure and biochar soil amendments have shown many benefits to soil quality and crop productivity. This study aimed to reveal the effects of biochar and manure applications on soil fertility improvement and crop productivity in yellow cinnamon soil. RESULTS: This study based on a 5-year field experiment. Four treatments were designed, included the control (CK), biochar amendment, manure amendment, and both biochar and manure amendment (BM). The results showed that: after five years, both biochar and manure treatment improved soil structure by increasing soil mean weight diameter (MWD), and soil water and nutrient supply was also increased by increasing the contents of water content, available potassium and available phosphorus. The productivity was also enhanced as wheat yield under the biochar, manure, and BM treatments increased by 3.59-11.32% compared with CK. In addition, biochar and manure treatment increased soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) by > 15%, and soil total nematode abundance was significantly increased. Furthermore, the nematode community structure was significantly affected by biochar and manure treatment, dominant trophic group in CK was herbivores, but bacterivores were dominant in the biochar and manure treatments. The distribution of nematode genera was closely related to soil chemical properties and microbial biomass. Increases in the Shannon's diversity index, and decreases in the dominance index and summed maturity index after the 5-year treatment indicated a sustainable soil ecosystem after the biochar and manure applications. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that biochar and manure result in better soil quality and increased productivity in yellow cinnamon soil.

RESUMO

Recently, concerns over heavy metal contamination of soil have grown. The application of sulfur has been recommended to enhance crop productivity and increase soil cadmium (Cd) immobilization. In this study, a pool experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of two sulfur sources and multiple treatment levels on rice growth and Cd accumulation. The two sulfur forms were elemental sulfur (S0) and gypsum, both of which were applied at 0, 0.15, and 0.30 g S kg-1 soil, for a total of five treatments. The results showed that both S0 and gypsum significantly increased rice biomass compared to the control (CK), and rice yield was increased 2.8-4.8 folds. The effect size was greater for gypsum than S0. The application of S0 reduced the rice grain Cd concentration from 0.61 mg kg-1 (CK) to 0.41-0.46 mg kg-1, while gypsum reduced the Cd concentration to 0.24-0.43 mg kg-1. The lower gypsum application level achieved the greatest reduction in rice grain Cd accumulation. This study further demonstrated that the application of S0 and gypsum led to a decrease in the labile Cd percentage and an increase in the stable Cd percentage. In bulk soil, iron and manganese oxide-bound Cd increased by 6.4-7.3% and 0.7-2.0% for the S0 and gypsum treatments, respectively. In the rhizosphere, residual Cd increased by >0.6%. Furthermore, this study found that sulfur application reduced Cd transfer from root to shoot, and significantly decreased rice grain Cd accumulation. These findings indicate that sulfur application to paddy soils can promote rice productivity and effectively remediate soil Cd contamination, with a greater effect by gypsum than S0.

RESUMO

Biochar addition to soil has been widely accepted as an option to enhance soil carbon sequestration by introducing recalcitrant organic matter. However, it remains unclear whether biochar will negate the net carbon accumulation by increasing carbon loss through CO2 efflux from soil (soil respiration). The objectives of this study were to address: 1) whether biochar addition increases soil respiration; and whether biochar application rate and biochar type (feedstock and pyrolyzing system) affect soil respiration. Two series of field experiments were carried out at 8 sites representing the main crop production areas in China. In experiment 1, a single type of wheat straw biochar was amended at rates of 0, 20 and 40 tha(-1) in four rice paddies and three dry croplands. In experiment 2, four types of biochar (varying in feedstock and pyrolyzing system) were amended at rates of 0 and 20 tha(-1) in a rice paddy under rice-wheat rotation. Results showed that biochar addition had no effect on CO2 efflux from soils consistently across sites, although it increased topsoil organic carbon stock by 38% on average. Meanwhile, CO2 efflux from soils amended with 40 t of biochar did not significantly higher than soils amended with 20 t of biochar. While the biochars used in Experiment 2 had different carbon pools and physico-chemical properties, they had no effect on soil CO2 efflux. The soil CO2 efflux following biochar addition could be hardly explained by the changes in soil physic-chemical properties and in soil microbial biomass. Thus, we argue that biochar will not negate the net carbon accumulation by increasing carbon loss through CO2 efflux in agricultural soils.

RESUMO

Maize production plays an important role in global food security, especially in arid and poor-soil regions. Its production is also increasing in China in terms of both planting area and yield. However, maize productivity in rainfed croplands is constrained by low soil fertility and moisture insufficiency. To increase the maize yield, local farmers use NPK fertilizer. However, the fertilization regime (CF) they practice is unbalanced with too much nitrogen in proportion to both phosphorus and potassium, which has led to low fertilizer use efficiency and excessive greenhouse gases emissions. A two-year field experiment was conducted to assess whether a high yielding but low greenhouse gases emission system could be developed by the combination of balanced fertilization (BF) and biochar amendment in a rainfed farmland located in the Northern region of China. Biochar was applied at rates of 0, 20, and 40 t/ha. Results show that BF and biochar increased maize yield and partial nutrient productivity and decreased nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. Under BF the maize yield was 23.7% greater than under CF. N2O emissions under BF were less than half that under CF due to a reduced N fertilizer application rate. Biochar amendment decreased N2O by more than 31% under CF, while it had no effect on N2O emissions under BF. Thus BF was effective at maintaining a high maize yield and reducing greenhouse gases emissions. If combined with biochar amendment, BF would be a good way of sustaining low carbon agriculture in rainfed areas.

RESUMO

Suberin-derived substituted fatty acids have been shown to be potential biomarkers for plant-derived carbon (C) in soils across ecosystems. Analyzing root derived suberin compounds bound in soil could help to understand the root input into a soil organic carbon pool. In this study, bound lipids were extracted and identified in root and topsoil samples. Short-chain suberin diacids were quantified under rice (Oryza sativa L.) and rape (Brassica campestris) rotations with different cultivar combinations in a Chinese rice paddy. After removal of free lipids with sequential extraction, the residual bound lipids were obtained with saponification and derivatization before analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Diacids C16 and C18 in bound lipids were detected both in rice and rape root samples, while diacids C20 and C22 were detected only in rape root samples. Accordingly, diacids were quantified in both rhizosphere and bulk soil (0-15 cm). The amount of total root-derived diacids in bulk soil varied in a range of 5.6-9.6 mg/kg across growth stages and crop seasons. After one year-round rice-rape rotation, root-derived suberin diacids were maintained at a level of 7-9 mg/kg in bulk soil; this was higher under a super rice cultivar LY than under a hybrid cultivar IIY. While concentrations of the analyzed diacids were generally higher in rhizosphere than in bulk soil, the total diacid (DA) concentration was higher at the time of rape harvest than at rice harvest, suggesting that rape roots made a major contribution to the preservation of diacids in the paddy. Moreover, the net change in the concentration and the ratios of C16:0 DA to C18:1 DA, and of C16:0 DA to C18:0 DA, over a whole growing season, were greater under LY than under IIY, though there was no difference between cultivars within a single growth stage. Overall, total concentration of root-derived suberin diacids was found to be positively correlated to soil organic carbon concentration both for bulk soil and rhizosphere. However, the turnover and preservation of the root suberin biomolecules with soil property and field conditions deserve further field studies.
