RESUMO

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of potential superhydrophobic-oleophilic materials. The organic ligands in superhydrophobic MOFs usually contain long alkyl chains, fluorine groups or aromatic rings with large π conjugation, the preparation of which suffers from high cost, complex operation and so on. In addition, the topological structure of MOFs plays an important role in the hydrophobicity, which may be ignored previously. Here we report a superhydrophobic-oleophilic MOF (BiPPA2) obtained by a facile and fast method, which not only displays a large water contact angle of up to 163° and a small sliding angle of nearly equal to 0°, but also exhibits high sorption capacity for multiple oils and organic solvents, well reusability and high oil retention. In addition, BiPPA2 is stable in a wide pH range (0.5-11.0). Finally, the single crystal structure of BiPPA2 is resolved to reveal the intrinsic reason for the super-hydrophobicity. This work may inspire the further design of pristine superhydrophobic MOFs based on a simple method, which enriches the family of superhydrophobic MOFs and has great significance for practical applications.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic ozonation is considered to be a promising approach for the treatment of refractory organic pollutants, but the design of efficient catalyst remains a challenge. Surface modification provides a potential strategy to improve the activity of photocatalytic ozonation. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were first performed to check the interaction between O3 and TiO2-OH (surface hydroxylated TiO2) or TiO2-F (surface fluorinated TiO2), and the results suggest that TiO2-OH displays better O3 adsorption and activation than does TiO2-F, which is confirmed by experimental results. The surface hydroxyl groups greatly promote the O3 activation, which is beneficial for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Importantly, TiO2-OH displays better performance towards pollutants (such as berberine hydrochloride) removal than does TiO2-F and most reported ozonation photocatalysts. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency reaches 84.4 % within two hours. This work highlights the effect of surface hydroxylation on photocatalytic ozonation and provides ideas for the design of efficient photocatalytic ozonation catalysts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the production of galactosedeficient IgA1 (GdIgA1) and the deposition of immune complexes in the kidney. Exploring the landscape of immune dysregulation in IgAN is valuable for pathogenesis and disease treatment. We conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the causal correlations between inflammation and IgAN. METHODS: Based on available genetic datasets, we investigated potential causal links between inflammation and the risk of IgAN using two-sample MR. We used genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of 5 typical inflammation markers, 41 inflammatory cytokines, and 731 immune cell signatures, accessed from the public GWAS Catalog. The primary method employed for MR analysis was Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW). To confirm consistency across results, four supplementary MR methods were also conducted: MR-Egger, Weighted Median, Weighted Mode, and Simple Mode. To assess pleiotropy, we used the MR-Egger regression intercept test and Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) test. Cochrane's Q statistic was applied to evaluate heterogeneity. Additionally, the stability of the MR findings was verified through the leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: This study revealed that interleukin-7 (IL-7) and stem cell growth factor beta (SCGF-ß) were possibly associated with the risk of IgAN according to the IVW approach, with estimated odds ratios (OR) of 1.059 (95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.015 to 1.104, P = 0.008) and 1.043 (95 % CI 1.002 to 1.085, P = 0.037). Five immune traits were identified that might be linked to IgAN risk, each with P-values below 0.01, including natural killer T %T cell (OR = 1.058, 95 % CI: 1.020 to 1.097, P = 0.002), natural killer T %lymphocyte (OR = 1.055, 95 % CI: 1.016 to 1.096, P = 0.006), CD25++ CD8+ T cell %T cell (OR = 1.057, 95 % CI: 1.016 to 1.099, P = 0.006), CD3 on effector memory CD4+ T cell (OR = 1.045, 95 % CI: 1.019 to 1.071, P = 0.001), and CD3 on CD28+ CD45RA+ CD8+ T cell (OR = 1.042, 95 % CI: 1.016 to 1.068, P = 0.001). CD4 on central memory CD4+ T cell might be a protective factor for IgAN (OR = 0.922, 95 % CI: 0.875 to 0.971, P = 0.002). Moreover, IgAN may be implicated in a high risk of elevated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (OR = 1.114, 95 % CI 1.002 to 1.239, P = 0.046). CONCLUSION: Our study revealed exposures among typical inflammation markers, inflammatory cytokines, and immune cell signatures that may potentially linked to IgAN risk by MR analysis. This insight may advance our understanding of the etiology of IgAN and support the development of targeted therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

Sepsis remains a serious public health issue that needs to be addressed globally. Severe liver injury caused by sepsis increases the risk of death in patients with sepsis. Liensinine (Lie) is one of the primary active components in Plumula nelumbinis and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Nevertheless, the effects of Lie on septic liver injury are unclear. This research investigated the protective effect of Lie (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) on liver damage via intraperitoneal administration of LPS (10 mg/kg) to C57BL/6 mice. Lie was given through intraperitoneal injection once a day for five days. Mice were treated with LPS intraperitoneally for 6 h at 1 h after Lie administration on the last day. The results suggested that Lie could decrease AST and ALT levels in serum, ameliorate histopathological changes and inhibit cell apoptosis in mice with LPS-induced septic liver injury. In addition, Lie inhibited increases in the mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, iNOS and IL-6. Lie also increased the mRNA level of IL-10. Lie reduced the content of MDA, a marker of lipid peroxidation, and increased the activity of the antioxidant enzymes GSH-Px, CAT and SOD. Our results also showed that Lie could suppress the LPS-activated MAPK and NF-κB pathways and trigger the Nrf2 signaling pathway both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, an Nrf2 inhibitor (ML385) weakened the suppressive effect of Lie on the MAPK and NF-κB pathways. Our results demonstrated that the suppressive effect of Lie on the MAPK and NF-κB pathways was partially reliant on activation of the Nrf2 pathway. In summary, these results indicate that Lie can improve inflammation and oxidative stress by activating Nrf2, which is a prospective therapeutic drug for alleviating septic liver injury.

RESUMO

Conductive π-d conjugated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide concerns in electrocatalysis due to their intrinsic high conductivity. However, the poor electrocatalytic stability is still a major problem that hinders the practical application of MOFs. Herein, a novel approach to enhancing the stability of MOF-based electrocatalyst, namely, the introduction of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), is reported. Impressively, the π-d conjugated MOF FeCo3(DDA)2 (DDA = 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-9,10-anthraceneedione) exhibits ultrahigh oxygen evolution reaction (OER) stability (up to 2000 h). The experimental studies demonstrate that the presence of H-bonds in FeCo3(DDA)2 is responsible for its ultrahigh OER stability. Besides that, FeCo3(DDA)2 also displays a prominent OER activity (an overpotential of 260 mV vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 46.86 mV dec-1). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the synergistic effect of the Fe and Co sites in FeCo3(DDA)2 contributes to its prominent OER performance. This work provides a new avenue of boosting the electrocatalytic stability of conductive π-d conjugated MOFs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the diabetic microvascular complications with complex pathophysiology, and exploring the landscape of immune dysregulation in DN is valuable for pathogenesis and disease treatment. We crystallized possible inflammatory exposures into 91 circulating inflammatory proteins and 109 blood immune cells; and assessed the causal relationship between inflammation and DN using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Based on publicly available genetic data, we explored causal associations between inflammation and DN risk by two-sample MR analysis. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for 91 circulating inflammatory proteins, 109 immune cells absolute counts, and DN were acquired from the GWAS Catalog. Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) was the main MR method, while MR-Egger and MR-pleiotropy residuals and outliers (MR-PRESSO) were utilized for sensitivity analysis. Cochrane's Q was used to test for heterogeneity. The leave-one-out method ensured the stability of the MR results. RESULTS: This study revealed that higher levels of TNF-related activation-induced cytokine and tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 14 were possibly associated with the increased risk of DN according to the IVW approach, with estimated odds ratios (OR) of 1.287 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.051 to 1.577, P = 0.015) and 1.249 (95% CI 1.018 to 1.532, P = 0.033). Five immune cell traits were identified that might be linked to increased DN risk, including the higher absolute counts of HLA DR+ natural killer cell (OR = 1.248, 95% CI 1.055 to 1.476, P = 0.010), IgD+ CD38+ B cell (OR = 1.148, 95% CI 1.033 to 1.276, P = 0.010), CD25++ CD8+ T cell (OR = 1.159, 95% CI 1.032 to 1.302, P = 0.013), CD4- CD8- T cell (OR = 1.226, 95% CI 1.032 to 1.457, P = 0.020), and IgD- CD38- B cell (OR = 1.182, 95% CI 1.009 to 1.386, P = 0.039). In addition, elevated levels of interleukin-1 alpha (OR = 0.712, 95% CI 0.514 to 0.984, P = 0.040) and unswitched memory B cell (OR = 0.797, 95% CI 0.651 to 0.974, P = 0.027) may reduce the risk of developing DN. CONCLUSION: We identified inflammation-related exposures that may be associated with the risk of DN at the level of genetic prediction, which contributes to a better understanding of the etiologic of DN and facilitates the development of targeted therapies for DN.

RESUMO

Recently, amorphous materials have gained great attention as an emerging kind of functional material, and their characteristics such as isotropy, absence of grain boundaries, and abundant defects are very likely to outrun the disadvantages of crystalline counterparts, such as low conductivity, and ultimately lead to improved charge transfer efficiency. Herein, we investigated the effect of amorphization on the charge transfer process and photocatalytic performance with a phosphonate-based metal-organic framework (FePPA) as the research object. Comprehensive experimental results suggest that compared to crystalline FePPA, amorphous FePPA has more distorted metal nodes, which affects the electron distribution and consequently improves the photogenerated charge separation efficiency. Meanwhile, the distorted metal nodes in amorphous FePPA also greatly promote the adsorption and activation of O2. Hence, amorphous FePPA exhibits a better performance of photocatalytic C(sp3)-H bond activation for selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. This work illustrates the advantages of amorphous MOFs in the charge transfer process, which is conducive to the further development of high performance MOFs-based photocatalysts.

RESUMO

The escalation of global eutrophication has significantly increased due to the impact of climate change, particularly the increased frequency of extreme rainfall events. Predicting and managing eutrophication requires understanding the consequences of precipitation events on algal dynamics. Here, we assessed the influence of precipitation events throughout the year on nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics in a drinking water reservoir from January 2020 to January 2022. Four distinct precipitation patterns, namely early spring flood rain (THX), Plum rain (MY), Typhoon rain (TF), and Dry season (DS), were identified based on rainfall intensity, duration time, and cumulative rainfall. The study findings indicate that rainfall is the primary driver of algal dynamics by altering nutrient levels and TN:TP ratios during wet seasons, while water temperature becomes more critical during the Dry season. Combining precipitation characteristics with the lag periods between algal proliferation and rainfall occurrence is essential for accurately assessing the impact of rainfall on algal blooms. The highest algae proliferation occurred approximately 20 and 30 days after the peak rainfall during the MY and DS periods, respectively. This was influenced by the intensity and cumulative precipitation. The reservoir exhibited two distinct TN/TP ratio stages, with average values of 52 and 19, respectively. These stages were determined by various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainfall-driven inflows and were associated with shifts from Bacillariophyta-dominated to Cyanophyta-dominated blooms during the MY and DS seasons. Our findings underscore the interconnected effects of nutrients, temperature, and hydrological conditions driven by diverse rainfall patterns in shaping algal dynamics. This study provides valuable insights into forecasting algal bloom risks in the context of climate change and developing sustainable strategies for lake or reservoir restoration.

RESUMO

Endothelial dysfunction is associated with the development of hypertension. We hypothesize that inflammatory and normal endothelial exosomes play their roles by mediating endothelial function, and they induce endothelial angiogenesis through different signaling pathways. Endothelial cell-derived exosomes were isolated from the human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) treated with (TExo) or without (CExo) tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. We monitored dermal microcirculation profiles in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and WKY rats using a laser Doppler imager and a laser Doppler perfusion and temperature monitor. Tube formation, levels of angiogenesis-related proteins in HUVEC-conditioned media, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were assessed following TNF-α, CExo, or TExo treatments. Western blot analysis was conducted to examine signaling proteins associated with inflammation and ROS. The results showed increased blood perfusion and the mean amplitude of endothelial oscillator in SHRs following CExo administration. TNF-α, CExo, and TExo treatments promoted endothelial tube formation and elevated levels of angiogenic factors and ROS. TExo significantly increased phosphorylation levels of STAT3, p38, and level of NF-κB, while decreasing phosphorylation levels of JNK and Erk (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). CExo significantly increased STAT3 phosphorylation and reduced JNK and Erk phosphorylation (all P < 0.01). In conclusion, TNF-α and TExo induce inflammatory and pathological angiogenesis via the NF-κB pathway, while CExo exhibits a physiologically pro-angiogenic effect on endothelial cells. Increased ROS, interplaying with inflammatory signals, contribute to exosome-mediated alterations of endothelial function, thereby playing a role in the development of hypertension.

RESUMO

Exostosis (also known as osteochondroma) is the most common benign bony lump of young people, usually arising at the distal femur. Vascular complications associated with exostoses are rare and include true aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm formation, deep vein thrombosis, arteriovenous fistula, and arterial insufficiency of the limbs. Few case reports describe pseudoaneurysms resulting from exostoses in mature adults, and no consensus has been reached regarding the optimal therapy. We report the case of a 51-year-old male patient complaining of persistent right thigh pain with a pulsatile mass and right calf swelling, without a history of trauma or hereditary multiple exostoses. The diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography angiography, which showed a pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery resulting from an exostosis on the lateral aspect of the distal femur. A Doppler ultrasound examination confirmed popliteal vein thrombosis caused by the compression of the pseudoaneurysm. Surgical treatment consisted of removing the exostosis, excision of the pseudoaneurysm, and an end-to-end anastomosis. The deep vein thrombosis was treated with rivaroxaban for 3 months. The patient was discharged after 6 days and followed up for 6 months with satisfactory results.

RESUMO

The cycloaddition reaction between CO2 and epoxide is an efficient way to convert CO2 into high value-added chemicals. Therefore, it is particularly important to develop efficient catalysts that can catalyze the reaction under mild conditions. In this work, a metal-organic framework (Bi-HHTP, consisting of bismuth (Bi) as metal dots and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxy-triphenylene (HHTP) as organic linkers) with zigzagging corrugated topology was successfully synthesized, which shows excellent catalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Various characterizations suggest that the excellent activity is derived from the following reasons: (1) the abundant exposed Bi sites provide Lewis sites for adsorption of epoxides and CO2; (2) the free holes produced over Bi-HHTP under light irradiation which could oxidize epoxide, which consequently facilitateing the subsequent ring-opening reaction; and (3) the existence of synergistic photocatalytic and photothermal effect in Bi-HHTP. This study provides a new avenue of developing bismuth-based metal organic frameworks to promote the efficiency of cycloaddition of CO2 under mild conditions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of novel ZelanteDVT™ catheter rheolytic thrombectomy in the single-session endovascular management of subacute deep venous thrombosis (DVT). METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 31 patients with subacute DVT who underwent ZelanteDVT™ catheter rheolytic thrombectomy. Procedure data, associated complications, and venous patency score were recorded. The deep venous patency and post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) rate were assessed in all patients during follow-up visits. RESULTS: After procedure, 19.4% (6/31) patients improved to grade III thrombus removal, while the remaining patients improved to grade II. Significant iliac vein compression syndrome was identified in 54.8% (17/31) patients, and 82.4% (14/17) of them received stent implantation. No serious procedure-related complications occurred. The median follow-up time was 13 months. The primary patency rate at 12 months was 83.87%, and the incidence of PTS was 19.35%. CONCLUSION: This novel rheological thrombectomy catheter seems to have a promising application prospect for single-session treatment of subacute DVT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postoperative sleep disturbance (PSD) is a prevalent clinical complication that may arise due to various factors. The purpose of this investigation is to identify the risk factors for PSD in spinal surgery and establish a risk prediction nomogram. METHODS: The clinical records of individuals who underwent spinal surgery from January 2020 to January 2021 were gathered prospectively. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, along with multivariate logistic regression analysis, was employed to establish independent risk factors. A nomogram prediction model was devised based on these factors. The nomogram's effectiveness was evaluated and verified via the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: A total of 640 patients who underwent spinal surgery were analyzed in this investigation, among which 393 patients experienced PSD with an incidence rate of 61.4%. After conducting LASSO regression and logistic regression analyses using R software on the variables in training set, 8 independent risk factors associated to PSD were identified, including female, preoperative sleep disorder, high preoperative anxiety score, high intraoperative bleeding volume, high postoperative pain score, dissatisfaction with ward sleep environment, non-use of dexmedetomidine and non-use of erector spinae plane block (ESPB). The nomogram and online dynamic nomogram were constructed after incorporating these variables. In the training and validation sets, the area under the curve (AUC) in the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were 0.806 (0.768-0.844) and 0.755 (0.667-0.844), respectively. The calibration plots indicated that the mean absolute error (MAE) values in both sets were respectively 1.2% and 1.7%. The decision curve analysis demonstrated the model had a substantial net benefit within the range of threshold probabilities between 20% and 90%. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram model proposed in this study included eight frequently observed clinical factors and exhibited favorable accuracy and calibration. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was retrospectively registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200061257, 18/06/2022).

RESUMO

Hydrophobic modification of bagasse fibers (BFs) through a green approach can promote its reuse in asphalt and enhance the utilization value of agricultural and forestry waste in road engineering. In contrast to traditional chemical modification, this study reports a new method for the hydrophobic modification of BFs using tannic acid (TA) and the in situ growth of FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs), resulting in FeOOH-TA-BF, which is used to prepare styrene-butadiene styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt. The experimental results show that the surface roughness, specific surface area, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity of the modified BF are improved, which is beneficial for enhancing the interface compatibility with asphalt. Specifically, compared with BF/SBS-modified asphalt, FeOOH-TA-BF/SBS-modified asphalt exhibits 39.21% and 23.26% increase in the elastic modulus G' and viscous modulus G″, respectively, at the optimal dosage of 2.5%, corresponding to 6.15-fold and 7.13-fold increase in the fatigue life at 2.5% and 5.0% strain respectively, and 22.0% improvement in shear resistance performance. In the meantime, 2.5-fold enhancement of the storage stability. Therefore, this study provides a simple, environmentally friendly, and efficient hydrophobic modification method that is of great significance for promoting the resource utilization of solid waste BF.

RESUMO

Background and objective: The rapid diagnosis of rice nitrogen nutrition is of great significance to rice field management and precision fertilization. The nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) based on the standard nitrogen concentration curve is a common parameter for the quantitative diagnosis of rice nitrogen nutrition. However, the current NNI estimation methods based on hyperspectral techniques mainly focus on finding a better estimation model while ignoring the relationship between the critical nitrogen concentration curve and rice hyperspectral reflectance. Methods: This study obtained canopy spectral data using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hyperspectral remote sensing and determined the rice critical nitrogen concentration curve and NNI. Taking the spectrum at critical nitrogen concentration as the standard spectrum, the original spectral reflectance and logarithmic spectral reflectance data were transformed by the difference method, and the features of the spectral data were extracted by a Autoencoder. Finally, the NNI inversion models of rice based on Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Bald Eagle Search-Extreme Learning Machine (BES-ELM) were constructed by taking the feature bands of four spectral extractions as input variables. Results: 1) from the feature extraction results of the self-encoder, simple logarithmic or difference transformation had little effect on NNI estimation, and logarithmic difference transformation effectively improved the NNI estimation results; 2) the estimation model based on the logarithmic difference spectrum and BES-ELM had the highest estimation accuracy, and the coefficient of determination (R2) values of the training set and verification set were 0.839 and 0.837, and the root mean square error (RMSE) values were 0.075 and 0.073, respectively; 3) according to the NNI, the samples were divided into a nitrogen-rich group (NNI ≥ 1) and nitrogen-deficient group (NNI < 1). Conclusion: The logarithmic difference transformation of the spectrum can effectively improve the estimation accuracy of the NNI estimation model, providing a new approach for improving NNI estimation methods based on hyperspectral technology.

RESUMO

Exosomes are biological small spherical lipid bilayer vesicles secreted by most cells in the body. Their contents include nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids. Exosomes can transfer material molecules between cells and consequently have a variety of biological functions, participating in disease development while exhibiting potential value as biomarkers and therapeutics. Growing evidence suggests that exosomes are vital mediators of vascular remodeling. Endothelial cells (ECs), vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), inflammatory cells, and adventitial fibroblasts (AFs) can communicate through exosomes; such communication is associated with inflammatory responses, cell migration and proliferation, and cell metabolism, leading to changes in vascular function and structure. Essential hypertension (EH), atherosclerosis (AS), and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are the most common vascular diseases and are associated with significant vascular remodeling. This paper reviews the latest research progress on the involvement of exosomes in vascular remodeling through intercellular information exchange and provides new ideas for understanding related diseases.

RESUMO

Mounting evidence has confirmed that essential hypertension (EH) is closely related to low-grade inflammation, but there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of the state of immune cells in the circulating blood of patients with EH. We analyzed whether hypertensive peripheral blood immune cell balance was destroyed. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of all subjects were analyzed using time-of-flight cytometry (CyTOF) based on 42 kinds of metal-binding antibodies. CD45+ cells were categorized into 32 kinds of subsets. Compared with the health control (HC) group, the percentage of total dendritic cells, two kinds of myeloid dendritic cell subsets, one intermediate/nonclassical monocyte subset and one CD4+ central memory T cell subset in the EH group, was significantly higher; the percentage of low-density neutrophils, four kinds of classical monocyte subsets, one CD14lowCD16- monocyte subset, one naive CD4+ and one naive CD8+ T cell subsets, one CD4+ effector and one CD4+ central memory T cell subsets, one CD8+ effector memory T cell subset, and one terminally differentiated γδ T cell subset, decreased significantly in EH. What is more, the expression of many important antigens was enhanced in CD45+ immune cells, granulocytes, and B cells in patients with EH. In conclusion, the altered number and antigen expression of immune cells reflect the imbalanced immune state of the peripheral blood in patients with EH.

RESUMO

We investigate the problem of statistical analysis of interval-valued time series data - two nonintersecting real-valued functions, representing lower and upper limits, over a period of time. Specifically, we pay attention to the two concepts of phase (or horizontal) variability and amplitude (or vertical) variability, and propose a phase-amplitude separation method. We view interval-valued time series as elements of a function (Hilbert) space and impose a Riemannian structure on it. We separate phase and amplitude variability in observed interval functions using a metric-based alignment solution. The key idea is to map an interval to a point in R 2 , view interval-valued time series as parameterized curves in R 2 , and borrow ideas from elastic shape analysis of planar curves, including PCA, to perform registration, summarization, analysis, and modeling of multiple series. The proposed phase-amplitude separation provides a new way of PCA and modeling for interval-valued time series, and enables shape clustering of interval-valued time series. We apply this framework to three different applications, including finance, meteorology and physiology, proves the effectiveness of proposed methods, and discovers some underlying patterns in the data. Experimental results on simulated data show that our method applies to the point-valued time series.
