RESUMO

The efficacy of electron transport layers (ETLs) is pivotal for optimizing the device performance of perovskite photovoltaic applications. However, colloidal dispersions of SnO2 are prone to aggregation and possess structural defects, such as terminal-hydroxyls (OHT) and oxygen vacancies (VOs), which can degrade the quality of ETLs, impede charge extraction and transport, and affect the nucleation and growth processes of the perovskite layer. In this study, the Sb(OH)4 - ions hydrolyzed from SbCl3 in colloidal dispersion can bind to defect sites and effectively stabilize the SnO2 nanocrystals are demonstrated. Upon oxidative annealing, a Sb2O5@SnO2 composite film is formed, in which the Sb2O5 not only mitigates the aforementioned defects but also broadens the energy range of unoccupied states through its dispersed conduction band. The increased electron affinity (EA) facilitates more efficient capture of photoexcited electrons from the perovskite layer, thus augmenting electron extraction and minimizing electron-hole recombination. As a result, a significant improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 22.60% to 24.54% is achieved, with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of up to 1.195 V, along with excellent stability of unsealed devices under various conditions. This study provides valuable insights for the understanding and design of ETLs in perovskite photovoltaic applications.

Lignans are widely distributed in nature, primarily found in the xylem and resins of plants, with the constituent units C6-C3, and their dimers are the most common in plants. In recent years, the trimeric sesquilignans have also received increasing attention from scholars. More than 200 derivatives have been isolated and identified from nearly 50 families, most of which are different types (monoepoxy lignans, bisepoxy lignans, benzofuran lignans) connected with simple phenylpropanoids through ether bonds, C-C bonds, and oxygen-containing rings to constitute sesquilignans. Some of them also possess pharmacological properties, including antioxidants, hepatoprotectives, antitumors, anti-inflammatory properties, and other properties. In addition, the chemical structure of sesquilignans is closely related to the pharmacological activity, and chemical modification of methoxylation enhances the pharmacological activity. In contrast, phenolic hydroxyl and hydroxyl glycosides reduce the pharmacological activity. Therefore, the present review aims to summarize the chemical diversity, bioactivities, and constitutive relationships to provide a theoretical basis for the more profound development and utilization of sesquilignans.

Aqueous ammonium ion batteries (AAIBs) are garnering increasing attention due to their utilization of abundant resources, cost-effectiveness, safety, and unique energy storage mechanism. The pursuit of high-performance cathode materials has become a pressing issue. In this study, we propose and synthesize ferrocene-embedded hydrated vanadium pentoxide (Fer/VOH) for implementation in AAIBs. The inclusion of ferrocene serves to expand the interlayer spacing, mitigate interlayer forces, and introduce the electron-rich environment characteristic of ferrocene. This augmentation facilitates the creation of additional oxygen vacancies, substantially enhancing the capacity and efficiency of ammonium ion storage. Notably, our investigation reveals that the incorporation of ferrocene attenuates the hydrogen bonding interactions associated with ammonium ions, rendering them more amenable to the interlayer embedding and release processes. Building upon these advantages, Fer/VOH exhibits a specific capacity of 313 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g, representing the highest reported performance among vanadium oxides utilized in AAIBs to date. Even after 2000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A/g, Fer/VOH maintains a reversible specific capacity of 89 mAh/g, with a capacity retention rate of 54.8%. This study confirms the viability of Fer/VOH as a cathode material for AAIBs and offers a novel approach to enhancing the electrical conductivity and diminishing the hydrogen bonding forces in vanadium oxide intercalation through the embedding of electron-rich species and positronic groups.

Objective: To examine the effects of fish oil supplements on the clinical course of cardiovascular disease, from a healthy state to atrial fibrillation, major adverse cardiovascular events, and subsequently death. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: UK Biobank study, 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2010, with follow-up to 31 March 2021 (median follow-up 11.9 years). Participants: 415 737 participants, aged 40-69 years, enrolled in the UK Biobank study. Main outcome measures: Incident cases of atrial fibrillation, major adverse cardiovascular events, and death, identified by linkage to hospital inpatient records and death registries. Role of fish oil supplements in different progressive stages of cardiovascular diseases, from healthy status (primary stage), to atrial fibrillation (secondary stage), major adverse cardiovascular events (tertiary stage), and death (end stage). Results: Among 415 737 participants free of cardiovascular diseases, 18 367 patients with incident atrial fibrillation, 22 636 with major adverse cardiovascular events, and 22 140 deaths during follow-up were identified. Regular use of fish oil supplements had different roles in the transitions from healthy status to atrial fibrillation, to major adverse cardiovascular events, and then to death. For people without cardiovascular disease, hazard ratios were 1.13 (95% confidence interval 1.10 to 1.17) for the transition from healthy status to atrial fibrillation and 1.05 (1.00 to 1.11) from healthy status to stroke. For participants with a diagnosis of a known cardiovascular disease, regular use of fish oil supplements was beneficial for transitions from atrial fibrillation to major adverse cardiovascular events (hazard ratio 0.92, 0.87 to 0.98), atrial fibrillation to myocardial infarction (0.85, 0.76 to 0.96), and heart failure to death (0.91, 0.84 to 0.99). Conclusions: Regular use of fish oil supplements might be a risk factor for atrial fibrillation and stroke among the general population but could be beneficial for progression of cardiovascular disease from atrial fibrillation to major adverse cardiovascular events, and from atrial fibrillation to death. Further studies are needed to determine the precise mechanisms for the development and prognosis of cardiovascular disease events with regular use of fish oil supplements.

BACKGROUND: Testicular cancer (TC) is currently the most common malignancy in young and middle-aged men. A comprehensive assessment of TC burden is in lack. METHOD: Global incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of TC from 1990 to 2019 were obtained. Estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify trends in TC changes during the period. Relationships between disease burden and age, sociodemographic index (SDI) levels, human development index (HDI) were further analyzed. RESULTS: Globally, incident cases of TC more than doubled from 1990 to 2019, together with an increasing of global age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) of TC from 1.9 to 2.8. The age-standardized deaths rates (ASDR) remained stable from 0.31 to 0.28. The similar results were reflected in the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). In 2019, the highest ASIR were found in Southern Latin America, Central Europe and Western Europe. Analogously, the highest ASDR were found in Southern Latin America followed by Central Latin America and Central Europe. The burden of incidence increased with SDI, appropriately reached a peak at about 0.78, and then declined. Similarly, the burden of deaths increased with SDI, met a maximum at about 0.7. CONCLUSIONS: From 1990 to 2019, the ASIR of TC has increased significantly, while the ASDR has been relatively stable and slightly decreased. The disease burden of TC is shifting to regions and countries with moderate to high levels of development. TC remains a rapidly growing global health problem, and new changes in TC burden should be considered when formulating new TC control policies.

Posterior circulation ischemia vertigo (PCIV) is vertebrobasilar insufficiency resulting in vertigo. Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction (BBTD) is broadly applied to treat PCIV in China, but its efficacy and detailed mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of BBTD on PCIV, and identify important gut microbiota and its derived short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) changes and the detailed mechanism through 16 S rRNA sequencing with SCFAs profiling. In this study, the model of PCIV was established by surgical ligation of the right subclavian artery (RSCA) and right common carotid artery (RCCA). We found that BBTD administration effectively reduced the volume of cerebral infarction and improved neurologic functions, reduced neuronal apoptosis and neuroinflammatory. Moreover, BBTD significantly modulated the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota, including increasing the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Prevotella and Akkermansia and decreasing relative abundances of Lachnospiraceae, Bacteroidetes (S24-7) and Ruminococcaceae. BBTD treatment also increased propionate content. Propionate mediates the the recovery of neurological functions and anti-apoptotic effects of BBTD in PCIV rat. Our findings wish to discover the potential mechanism of BBTD treatment on PCIV and promote its clinical application.

We established an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method for simultaneously analyzing the metabolites of bisphenols and phthalates in urine to identify the associations between these exposure levels and prostate cancer (PCa) based on a case-control study. After purifying urine samples with SPE, 18 metabolites were separated on a C18 column, and MS detection was performed. The UPLC-MS/MS method has been proven effective at evaluating bisphenol and phthalate exposure (0.020-0.20 µg/L of the limits of detection, 71.8 %∼119.4 % of recoveries, 0.4 %∼8.2 % of precision). Logistic regression explored the association between exposure level and PCa in 187 PCa cases and 151 controls. The detection rates of bisphenol A (BPA) and most phthalate metabolites were 100 % ranging from 0.06-46.74 and 0.12-899.92 µg/g creatinine, respectively, while the detection rates of other bisphenols and mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) are low, ranging from 0 % to 21.85 %. Correlation analysis of the metabolite levels indicated that the exposure sources of BPA, di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were different, and that the exposure sources of di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) may differ between two groups. Logistic regression analysis revealed that BPA (OR<0.45 vs ≥1.43 =10.02) and DEHP exposure (OR<21.75 vs ≥45.42 =48.26) increased the risk of PCa.

BACKGROUND: A promoter is a specific sequence in DNA that has transcriptional regulatory functions, playing a role in initiating gene expression. Identifying promoters and their strengths can provide valuable information related to human diseases. In recent years, computational methods have gained prominence as an effective means for identifying promoter, offering a more efficient alternative to labor-intensive biological approaches. RESULTS: In this study, a two-stage integrated predictor called "msBERT-Promoter" is proposed for identifying promoters and predicting their strengths. The model incorporates multi-scale sequence information through a tokenization strategy and fine-tunes the DNABERT model. Soft voting is then used to fuse the multi-scale information, effectively addressing the issue of insufficient DNA sequence information extraction in traditional models. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time an integrated approach has been used in the DNABERT model for promoter identification and strength prediction. Our model achieves accuracy rates of 96.2% for promoter identification and 79.8% for promoter strength prediction, significantly outperforming existing methods. Furthermore, through attention mechanism analysis, we demonstrate that our model can effectively combine local and global sequence information, enhancing its interpretability. CONCLUSIONS: msBERT-Promoter provides an effective tool that successfully captures sequence-related attributes of DNA promoters and can accurately identify promoters and predict their strengths. This work paves a new path for the application of artificial intelligence in traditional biology.

Biosensing is vital for many areas like disease diagnosis, infectious disease prevention, and point-of-care monitoring. Microfluidics has been evidenced to be a powerful tool for biosensing via integrating biological detection processes into a palm-size chip. Based on the chip structure, microfluidics has two subdivision types: open microfluidics and closed microfluidics, whose operation methods would be diverse. In this review, we summarize fundamentals, liquid control methods, and applications of open and closed microfluidics separately, point out the bottlenecks, and propose potential directions of microfluidics-based biosensing.

BACKGROUND: The association between long-term exposure to ozone (O3) and adult-onset asthma (AOA) remains inconclusive, and analysis of causality is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To examine the causal association between long-term O3 exposure and AOA. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 362,098 participants was conducted using the UK Biobank study. Incident cases of AOA were identified using health administrative data of the National Health Services. O3 exposure at participants' residential addresses was estimated by a spatio-temporal model. Instrumental variable (IV) modelling was used to analyze the causal association between O3 exposure and AOA, by incorporating wind speed and planetary boundary layer height as IVs into time-dependent Cox model. Negative control outcome (accidental injury) was also used to additionally evaluate unmeasured confounding. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 11.38 years, a total of 10,973 incident AOA cases were identified. A U-shaped concentration-response relationship was observed between O3 exposure and AOA in the traditional Cox models with HR of 0.916 (95% CI: 0.888, 0.945) for O3 at low levels (<38.17 ppb), and 1.204 (95% CI: 1.168, 1.242) for O3 at high levels (≥38.17 ppb). However, in the IV analysis we only found a statistically significant association between high-level O3 exposure and AOA risk, but not for low-level O3 exposure. No significant associations between O3 exposure and accidental injury were observed. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest a potential causal relationship between long-term exposure to high-level ambient O3 and increased risks of AOA.

BACKGROUND: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the predominant etiological agent of seafood-associated foodborne illnesses on a global scale. It is essential to elucidate the mechanisms by which this pathogen disseminates. Given the existing research predominantly concentrates on localized outbreaks, there is a pressing necessity for a comprehensive investigation to capture strains of V. parahaemolyticus cross borders. RESULTS: This study examined the frequency and genetic attributes of imported V. parahaemolyticus strains among travelers entering Shanghai Port, China, between 2017 and 2019.Through the collection of 21 strains from diverse countries and regions, Southeast Asia was pinpointed as a significant source for the emergence of V. parahaemolyticus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed clear delineation between strains originating from human and environmental sources, emphasizing that underlying genome data of foodborne pathogens is essential for environmental monitoring, food safety and early diagnosis of diseases. Furthermore, our study identified the presence of virulence genes (tdh and tlh) and approximately 120 antibiotic resistance-related genes in the majority of isolates, highlighting their crucial involvement in the pathogenesis of V. parahaemolyticus. CONCLUSIONS: This research enhanced our comprehension of the worldwide transmission of V. parahaemolyticus and its antimicrobial resistance patterns. The findings have important implications for public health interventions and antimicrobial stewardship strategies, underscoring the necessity for epidemiological surveillance of pathogen at international travel hubs.

The vagus nerve, a pivotal link within the gut-brain axis, plays a critical role in maintaining homeostasis and mediating communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. It has been reported that gastrointestinal infection by Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) triggers gut inflammation and manifests as anxiety-like behaviors, yet the mechanistic involvement of the vagus nerve remains to be elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated that unilateral cervical vagotomy markedly attenuated anxiety-like behaviors induced by S. typhimurium SL1344 infection in C57BL/6 mice, as evidenced by the open field test and marble burying experiment. Furthermore, vagotomy significantly diminished neuronal activation within the nucleus of the solitary tract and amygdala, alongside mitigating aberrant glial cell activation in the hippocampus and amygdala. Additionally, vagotomy notably decreases serum endotoxin levels, counters the increase in splenic Salmonella concentration, and modulates the expression of inflammatory cytokines-including IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α-in both the gastrointestinal tract and brain, with a concurrent reduction in IL-22 and CXCL1 expression. This intervention also fostered the enrichment of beneficial gut microbiota, including Alistipes and Lactobacillus species, and augmented the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the gut. Administration of GABA replicated the vagotomy's beneficial effects on reducing gut inflammation and anxiety-like behavior in infected mice. However, blockade of GABA receptors with picrotoxin abrogated the vagotomy's protective effects against gut inflammation, without influencing its impact on anxiety-like behaviors. Collectively, these findings suggest that vagotomy exerts a protective effect against infection by promoting GABA synthesis in the colon and alleviating anxiety-like behavior. This study underscores the critical role of the vagus nerve in relaying signals of gut infection to the brain and posits that targeting the gut-brain axis may offer a novel and efficacious approach to preventing gastrointestinal infections and associated behavioral abnormalities.

This study proposes an efficient method for monitoring the submerged fermentation process of Tremella fuciformis (T. fuciformis) by integrating electronic nose (e-nose), electronic tongue (e-tongue), and colorimeter sensors using a data fusion strategy. Chemometrics was employed to establish qualitative identification and quantitative prediction models. The Pearson correlation analysis was applied to extract features from the e-nose and tongue sensor arrays. The optimal sensor arrays for monitoring the submerged fermentation process of T. fuciformis were obtained, and four different data fusion methods were developed by incorporating the colorimeter data features. To achieve qualitative identification, the physicochemical data and principal component analysis (PCA) results were utilized to determine three stages of the fermentation process. The fusion signal based on full features proved to be the optimal data fusion method, exhibiting the highest accuracy across different models. Notably, random forest (RF) was shown to be the most accurate pattern recognition method in this paper. For quantitative prediction, partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR) were employed to predict the sugar content and dry cell weight during fermentation. The best respective predictive R2 values for reducing sugar, tremella polysaccharide and dry cell weight were found to be 0.965, 0.988, and 0.970. Furthermore, due to its ability to capture nonlinear data relationships, SVR had superior performance in prediction modeling than PLSR. The results demonstrated that the combination of electronic sensor fusion signals and chemometrics provided a promising method for effectively monitoring T. fuciformis fermentation.

The mitigation of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated from household consumption, accounting for 52% of China's total greenhouse gas emissions, plays a pivotal role in China's pursuit of reaching a carbon peak by 2030. The study used three waves of nationally representative longitudinal data, energy statistics data, and input-output table to estimate household CO2 emissions (HCEs) in China at the micro-scale. The dynamic relationship between household consumption pattern transition and HCEs per capita was explored by applying maximum likelihood and structural equation modeling (ML-SEM) with panel data. The results indicate that per capita HCE level in a given year appears to be positively associated with HCE level for the same household in the previous year. A U-shaped relationship between consumption pattern transition and HCEs per capita was confirmed, as well as the reinforcement effect of income on the impacts of consumption pattern transition. The increase in consumption propensity, household income, share of wage-income, household asset values, and house space results in higher HCEs per capita. The family size and dependency ratio have a negative relationship with HCEs, whereas households that are female-oriented and more Internet-dependent tend to produce more CO2. Exploring the consumption transition of households is crucial for reducing CO2 emissions at the household level in China.

BACKGROUND: For chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection patients, increasing evidence has demonstrated the effectiveness of expanding the indications and applicable population for antiviral therapy. However, the expanded indication of antiviral therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains to be further explored. METHODS: 196 HBV-related HCC patients who received radical hepatectomy and nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) therapy at Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital were enrolled in this study. HCC recurrence, overall survival (OS), early virological (VR) and biochemical responses (BR) of patients were compared between different NAs therapy and the use of anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) therapy. RESULTS: NAs therapy at different timing of surgery was a strong independent risk factor for postoperative recurrence and overall mortality of HBV-related HCC patients. Furthermore, in HCC patients who received postoperative anti-PD-1 therapy, patients with HBV DNA < 1000 copy/mL had significantly better recurrence-free survival (RFS) and OS than those with HBV DNA ≥ 1000 copy/mL (HR: 7.783; P = 0.002; HR: 6.699; P < 0.001). However, the differences of RFS and OS rates between entecavir group and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate group were not statistically significant. Similar results were also observed in the rates of early VR, BR and combined VR and BR. CONCLUSION: Timely and reasonable preoperative NAs therapy showed clinical benefit in improving the prognosis of patients with HBV-related HCC, even in the case of normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level and negative hepatitis e antigen (HBeAg). Furthermore, a possible synergistic effect between antiviral therapy and anti-PD-1 therapy was founded and need further verification.

Epidemiological evidence for long-term air pollution exposure and Parkinson's disease (PD) is controversial, and analysis of causality is limited. We identified 293,888 participants who were free of PD at baseline in the UK Biobank (2006-2010). Time-varying air pollution [fine particulate (PM2.5) and ozone (O3)] exposures were estimated using spatio-temporal models. Incident cases of PD were identified using validated algorithms. Four methods were used to investigate the associations between air pollution and PD, including (1) standard time-varying Cox proportional-hazard model; (2) Cox models weighted by generalized propensity score (GPS) and inverse-probability weights (IPW); (3) instrumental variable (IV) analysis; and (4) negative control outcome analysis. During a median of 11.6 years of follow-up, 1822 incident PD cases were identified. Based on standard Cox regression, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for a 1 µg/m3 or ppb increase in PM2.5 and O3 were 1.23 (1.17, 1.30) and 1.02 (0.98, 1.05), respectively. Consistent results were found in models weighted by GPS and IPW, and in IV analysis. There were no significant associations between air pollution and negative control outcomes. This study provides evidence to support a causal association between PM2.5 exposure and PD. Mitigation of air pollution could be a protective measure against PD.

Individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are particularly vulnerable to dementia, but it remains unclear whether air pollution exposure links with higher risk of dementia among those with CVD. The data were derived from the UK Biobank study (UKB). Dementia-free participants with CVD at baseline were included. Air pollution exposure was assessed through land use regression models, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOX). A Cox proportional hazards model was used to investigate the associations between air pollution exposure and incident dementia among individuals with CVD. Air pollution was associated with dementia among individuals with CVD, and the hazard ratios of dementia associated with each interquartile range (IQR) µg/m3 increase in air pollution were 1.07 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.12) for PM2.5, 1.10 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.15) for PM10, 1.08 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.14) for NO2 and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.09) for NOx. Associations between air pollution and all-cause dementia were found to be significant among individuals with hypertension. Adverse effects of air pollution were also observed for Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD), with a higher effect for AD. Observed associations remained similar in subgroups of APOE ε4 carriers and noncarriers, although there was a higher risk difference across different air pollution concentration among these individuals carrying APOE ε4. Air pollution emerges as a critical risk factor for dementia among individuals with CVD, regardless of genetic susceptibility indicated by the APOE genotype. Notably, individuals with hypertension might be susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution, leading to a higher incidence of dementia. Understanding these impacts on dementia among individuals with CVD may promote better targeted prevention and clinical management strategies.

Despite the remarkable progress of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), challenges remain in terms of finding effective and viable strategies to enhance their long-term stability while maintaining high efficiency. In this study, a new insulating and hydrophobic fluorinated polyimide (FPI: 6FDA-6FAPB) was used as the interface layer between the perovskite layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) in PSCs. The functional groups of FPI play a pivotal role in passivating interface defects within the device. Due to its high work function, FPI demonstrates field-effect passivation (FEP) capabilities as an interface layer, effectively mitigating non-radiative recombination at the interface. Notably, the FPI insulating interface layer does not impede carrier transmission at the interface, which is attributed to the presence of hole tunneling effects. The optimized PSCs achieve an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.61 % and demonstrate excellent stability, showcasing the efficacy of FPI in enhancing device performance and reliability.

2,2',7,7'-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl)-amine-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) represents the state-of-the-art hole-transporting material (HTM) in n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its susceptibility to stability issues has been a long-standing concern. In this study, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of the untapped potential within the family of spiro-type HTMs using an innovative anisotropic regulation strategy. Diverging from conventional approaches that can only modify spirobifluorene with single functional group, this approach allows us to independently tailor the two orthogonal components of the spiro-skeleton at the molecular level. The newly designed HTM, SF-MPA-MCz, features enhanced thermal stability, precise energy level alignment, superior film morphology, and optimized interfacial properties when compared to Spiro-OMeTAD, which contribute to a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.53% for PSCs employing SF-MPA-MCz with substantially improved thermal stability and operational stability. Note that the optimal concentration for SF-MPA-MCz solution is only 30 mg/ml, significantly lower than Spiro-OMeTAD (>70 mg/ml), which could remarkably reduce the cost especially for large-area processing in future commercialization. This work presents a promising avenue for the versatile design of multifunctional HTMs, offering a blueprint for achieving efficient and stable PSCs.
