RESUMO

A technique for tracking the interface position of non-metal-metal composite liners during high-speed implosion is proposed in this paper. Based on the magnetic diffusion difference between metal and non-metal, the interface position information is obtained by measuring magnetic fields in the cavity of the liner. An efficient magnetic flux estimation algorithm based on iterative magnetic diffusion simulation is also proposed to estimate the magnetic flux loss of the liner. Numerical experiments show that the estimation algorithm can reduce the relative error to less than 0.5%. The composite solid liner experimental results show that the maximum error is about 2% under imperfect experimental conditions. Detailed analysis suggests that this method can be widely applied to non-metallic sample materials (electrical conductivity is less than 103 ∼ 104 S/m). The technique provides a useful supplement to the existing interface diagnosis methods for high-speed implosion liners.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Timber harvesting and industrial wood processing laterally transfer the carbon stored in forest sectors to wood products creating a wood products carbon pool. The carbon stored in wood products is allocated to end-use wood products (e.g., paper, furniture), landfill, and charcoal. Wood products can store substantial amounts of carbon and contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse effects. Therefore, accurate accounts for the size of wood products carbon pools for different regions are essential to estimating the land-atmosphere carbon exchange by using the bottom-up approach of carbon stock change. RESULTS: To quantify the carbon stored in wood products, we developed a state-of-the-art estimator (Wood Products Carbon Storage Estimator, WPsCS Estimator) that includes the wood products disposal, recycling, and waste wood decomposition processes. The wood products carbon pool in this estimator has three subpools: (1) end-use wood products, (2) landfill, and (3) charcoal carbon. In addition, it has a user-friendly interface, which can be used to easily parameterize and calibrate an estimation. To evaluate its performance, we applied this estimator to account for the carbon stored in wood products made from the timber harvested in Maine, USA, and the carbon storage of wood products consumed in the United States. CONCLUSION: The WPsCS Estimator can efficiently and easily quantify the carbon stored in harvested wood products for a given region over a specific period, which was demonstrated with two illustrative examples. In addition, WPsCS Estimator has a user-friendly interface, and all parameters can be easily modified.

RESUMO

DNA-damaging treatments such as radiotherapy (RT) have become promising to improve the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors by enhancing tumor immunogenicity. However, accompanying treatment-related detrimental events in normal tissues have posed a major obstacle to radioimmunotherapy and present new challenges to the dose delivery mode of clinical RT. In the present study, ultrahigh dose rate FLASH X-ray irradiation was applied to counteract the intestinal toxicity in the radioimmunotherapy. In the context of programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) blockade, FLASH X-ray minimized mouse enteritis by alleviating CD8+ T cell-mediated deleterious immune response compared with conventional dose rate (CONV) irradiation. Mechanistically, FLASH irradiation was less efficient than CONV X-ray in eliciting cytoplasmic double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and in activating cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) in the intestinal crypts, resulting in the suppression of the cascade feedback consisting of CD8+ T cell chemotaxis and gasdermin E-mediated intestinal pyroptosis in the case of PD-L1 blocking. Meanwhile, FLASH X-ray was as competent as CONV RT in boosting the antitumor immune response initiated by cGAS activation and achieved equal tumor control in metastasis burdens when combined with anti-PD-L1 administration. Together, the present study revealed an encouraging protective effect of FLASH X-ray upon the normal tissue without compromising the systemic antitumor response when combined with immunological checkpoint inhibitors, providing the rationale for testing this combination as a clinical application in radioimmunotherapy.

RESUMO

Magnetically driven loading techniques based on high current pulsed power drivers are very important tools for researching material dynamic behaviors and high-pressure physics. Based on the technologies of a Marx generator energy storage and low impedance coaxial cable energy transmission, a compact high current pulsed power driver CQ-7 was developed and established at the Institute of Fluid Physics, China Academy of Engineering Physics, which can generate precisely shaped current waveforms for magnetically driven loading experiments. CQ-7 is composed of 256 two-stage Marx generators in parallel with low impedance, high voltage coaxial cables for current output. The 256 Marx generators are divided into 16 groups, and each separate group can be individually triggered to discharge and shape currents in sequence by a low jitter, high voltage pulse trigger with 16 output signals. The electrical parameters of CQ-7 are a capacitance of 20.48 µF, an inductance of 4.12 nH, and a resistance of 3.35 mΩ in a short circuit. When working at the charging voltage of ±40-±60 kV, CQ-7 can deliver a peak current from 5 to 7 MA to the short-circuit loads with a rising time of 400-700 ns at different discharging time sequences. Two different experiments were conducted to test the performance of CQ-7: magnetically driven high velocity flyer plates and solid liner implosion. The results show that CQ-7 can accelerate the aluminum flyer plate with a size of 12 × 8 × 1 mm3 to more than 7.5 km/s and uniformly drive the aluminum liner with an inner diameter of 6.2 mm and a thickness of 0.4 mm to more than 9.5 km/s. Furthermore, these experiments indicate that CQ-7 is a robust platform for material dynamics and high-pressure physics.

RESUMO

A complex impedance measurement device with a short response time and high noise immunity is presented in this paper. The device based on a radio-frequency reflectometer was specially developed for electro-physical property investigations of materials in quasi-isentropic compression experiments. The maximum operating frequency of the device is up to 600 MHz for reducing intense low-frequency noises. Meanwhile, an off-line signal processing code was developed to improve the response time of the device to less than 10 ns. Using the device, the complex impedance and electrical conductivity of water compressed by an explosive-driven magnetic flux compression generator were measured, and an abrupt change in the complex impedance of water caused by a liquid-solid transition was directly observed under intense electromagnetic interference.

RESUMO

High-energy, high-dose, microfocus X-ray computed tomography (HHM CT) is one of the most effective methods for high-resolution X-ray radiography inspection of high-density samples with fine structures. Minimizing the effective focal spot size of the X-ray source can significantly improve the spatial resolution and the quality of the sample images, which is critical and important for the performance of HHM CT. The objective of this study is to present a 9 MeV HHM CT prototype based on a high-average-current photo-injector in which X-rays with about 70µm focal spot size are produced via using tightly focused electron beams with 65/66µm beam size to hit an optimized tungsten target. In digital radiography (DR) experiment using this HHM CT, clear imaging of a standard 0.1 mm lead DR resolution phantom reveals a resolution of 6 lp/mm (line pairs per mm), while a 5 lp/mm resolution is obtained in CT mode using another resolution phantom made of 10 mm ferrum. Moreover, comparing with the common CT systems, a better turbine blade prototype image was obtained with this HHM CT system, which also indicates the promising application potentials of HHM CT in non-destructive inspection or testing for high-density fine-structure samples.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate whether high-energy X-rays (HEXs) of the PARTER (platform for advanced radiotherapy research) platform built on CTFEL (Chengdu THz Free Electron Laser facility) can produce ultrahigh dose rate (FLASH) X-rays and trigger the FLASH effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: EBT3 radiochromic film and fast current transformer (FCT) devices were used to measure absolute dose and pulsed beam current of HEXs. Subcutaneous tumor-bearing mice and healthy mice were treated with sham, FLASH, and conventional dose rate radiotherapy (CONV), respectively to observe the tumor control efficiency and normal tissue damage. RESULTS: The maximum dose rate of HEXs of PARTER was up to over 1000 Gy/s. Tumor-bearing mice experiment showed a good result on tumor control (p < 0.0001) and significant difference in survival curves (p < 0.005) among the three groups. In the thorax-irradiated healthy mice experiment, there was a significant difference (p = 0.038) in survival among the three groups, with the risk of death decreased by 81% in the FLASH group compared to that in the CONV group. The survival time of healthy mice irradiated in the abdomen in the FLASH group was undoubtedly higher (62.5% of mice were still alive when we stopped observation) than that in the CONV group (7 days). CONCLUSION: This study confirmed that HEXs of the PARTER system can produce ultrahigh dose rate X-rays and trigger a FLASH effect, which provides a basis for future scientific research and clinical application of HEX in FLASH radiotherapy.

RESUMO

This paper reports on the development of a magnetically driven high-velocity implosion experiment conducted on the CQ-3 facility, a compact pulsed power generator with a load current of 2.1 MA. The current generates a high Lorentz force between inner and outer liners made from 2024 aluminum. Equally positioned photonic Doppler velocimetry probes record the liner velocities. In experiment CQ3-Shot137, the inner liner imploded with a radial converging velocity of 6.57 km/s while the outer liner expanded at a much lower velocity. One-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics simulation with proper material models provided curves of velocity versus time that agree well with the experimental measurements. Simulation then shows that the inner liner underwent a shock-less compression to approximately 19 GPa and reached an off-Hugoniot high-pressure state. According to the scaling law that the maximum loading pressure is proportional to the square of the load current amplitude, the results demonstrate that such a compact capacitor bank as CQ-3 has the potential to generate pressure as high as 100 GPa within the inner liner in such an implosion experiment. It is emphasized that the technique described in this paper can be easily replicated at low cost.

RESUMO

Room-temperature superconductivity has always been an area of intensive research. Recent findings of clathrate metal hydrides structures have opened up the doors for achieving room-temperature superconductivity in these materials. Here, we report first-principles calculations for stable H-rich clathrate structures of uranium hydrides at high pressures. The clathrate uranium hydrides contain H cages with stoichiometries of H24, H29, and H32, in which H atoms are bonded covalently to other H atoms, and U atoms occupy the centers of the cages. Especially, a UH10 clathrate structure containing H32 cages is predicted to have an estimated T c higher than 77 K at high pressures.

RESUMO

The lateral flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from soils to inland waters and ultimately to the ocean represents a fundamental component of the global carbon cycle. To estimate the DOC flux, we developed an empirical terrestrial-aquatic DOC fluxes model (TAF-DOC). TAF-DOC incorporates various environmental factors (e.g., meteorology, sulfur, and nitrogen deposition) that to-date have not been comprehensively considered or well-represented in existing modeling frameworks. TAF-DOC was applied to estimate spatial-temporal patterns of DOC flux and potential fates across the conterminous United States during the 1985 to 2018 time period. Our results suggest that TAF-DOC successfully characterized spatial-temporal of DOC flux. As expected, the interannual pattern of DOC flux was strongly regulated by precipitation, but the long-term trend was significantly influenced by the rate of atmospheric wet sulfur deposition. From 1985 to 2018, TAF-DOC estimated DOC loading from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems in the conterminous United States to be 33.5 ± 2.2 TgC per year, which was roughly 0.39-0.49% of total soil organic carbon stock estimates. The dominant fate of terrestrially-derived DOC was delivery to the coastal ocean in riverine export (41%), with another 21% buried in sediment and the remaining 12.8 ± 0.4 TgC per year (38%) returned to the atmosphere through outgassing from inland waters. Assuming the quantities of DOC sediment burial and export to the ocean as an annual sink of terrestrially-derived carbon, budget inventories and models that do not account for DOC flux in the conterminous United States will underestimate the net annual carbon sink by as much as 5.5-6.4%.

RESUMO

The structural stability of hydrogen C2/c phase from 0 K to 300 K is investigated by combining the first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional perturbation theory. Without considering the temperature effect, the C2/c phase is stable from 150 GPa to 250 GPa based on the harmonic phonon dispersion relations. The hydrogen molecules at the solid lattice sites are sensitive to temperature. The structural stability to instability transition of the C2/c phase upon temperature is successfully captured by the radial distribution function and probability distribution of atomic displacements from first-principles MD simulations, confirmed by the phonon power spectrum analysis in the phase space. The existence of phonon quasiparticle for different normal modes is observed directly. The phonon power spectrum of specific normal modes corresponding to the Raman and infrared (IR) activations are depicted at different temperatures and pressures. The changes of frequency with temperature are in agreement with experimental results, supporting the C2/c as the hydrogen phase III. For the first time, the anharmonic phonon dispersion curves and density of states are predicted based on the phonon quasi-particle approach. Therefore, the temperature dependence of lattice vibrations can be observed directly, providing a more complete physical picture of phonon frequency distribution with respect to the Raman and IR spectra. It is found that the high-frequency regions adopt significant frequency shifts compared to the harmonic case.

RESUMO

In order to achieve a wider organic light-emitting diode (OLED) commercial popularity, solution processing inverted polymer light-emitting diode (iPLED) is a trend for further development, but there is still a gap for solution processing devices to achieve commercialization. The improvement of the performance iPLEDs is a research topic of intense current interest. The modification of the cathode interface layer of poly[(9,9-bis(3'-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PF-NR2) can greatly improve the performance of the devices. However, the electron transportation of the cathode interface layer of PF-NR2 films is currently poor, and there is substantial interest in improving its electron transportation to further enhance the performance of organic optoelectronic devices. In this paper, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with a particle size of 20 nm were prepared and doped into the interface layer PF-NR2 at a specified ratio. The electron transportation of the interface layer of PF-NR2 was greatly improved, as judged by conductive atomic force microscopy measurements, which is due to the excellent conductivity of Au NPs. Herein, we demonstrate improved electron transportation of the interface layer by doping Au NPs in PF-NR2 film, which provides important and practical theoretical guidance and technical support for the preparation of high performance organic optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

We proposed an ultrasensitive specific terahertz sensor consisting of two sets of graphene micro-ribbon with different widths. The interference between the plasmon resonances of the wide and narrow graphene micro-ribbons gives rise to the plasmon induced transparency (PIT) effect and enables ultrasensitive sensing in terahertz region. The performances of the PIT sensor have been analyzed in detail considering the thickness and refractive index sensing applications using full wave electromagnetic simulations. Taking advantage of the electrical tunability of graphene's Fermi level, we demonstrated the specific sensing of benzoic acid with detection limit smaller than 6.35 µg/cm2. The combination of specific identification and enhanced sensitivity of the PIT sensor opens exciting prospects for bio/chemical molecules sensing in the terahertz region.

RESUMO

We report continuous measurements of the sound velocity along the principal Hugoniot curve of α quartz between 0.25 and 1.45 TPa, as determined from lateral release waves intersecting the shock front as a function of time in decaying-shock experiments. The measured sound velocities are lower than predicted by prior models, based on the properties of stishovite at densities below ∼7 g/cm^{3}, but agree with density functional theory molecular dynamics calculations and an empirical wide-regime equation of state presented here. The Grüneisen parameter calculated from the sound velocity decreases from γ∼1.3 at 0.25 TPa to 0.66 at 1.45 TPa. In combination with evidence for increased (configurational) specific heat and decreased bulk modulus, the values of γ suggest a high thermal expansion coefficient at ∼0.25-0.65 TPa, where SiO_{2} is thought to be a bonded liquid. From our measurements, dissociation of the molecular bonds persists to ∼0.65-1.0 TPa, consistent with estimates by other methods. At higher densities, the sound velocity is close to predictions from previous models, and the Grüneisen parameter approaches the ideal gas value.

RESUMO

We demonstrated that attenuated total reflectance terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (ATR THz-TDS) is able to monitor oxidative stress response of living human cells, which is proven in this work that it is an efficient non-invasive, label-free, real-time and in situ monitoring of cell death. Furthermore, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of cultured living human breast epithelial cells, and along with their evolution under oxidative stress response induced by high concentration of H2O2, were quantitatively determined in the work. Our observation and results were finally confirmed using standard fluorescence-labeled flow cytometry measurements and visible fluorescence imaging.

RESUMO

Photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) has become a major domain velocity measurement technique for shock physics experiments. In this study, we propose and validate a bi-fiber quasi-axis probe for PDV that consists of a multimode source fiber and a single-mode detection fiber. This structure makes the received light by the probe totally reflected or scattered from the target, and, therefore, is free from the influence of unwanted return light. The light-receiving efficiency of the probe was calculated by the Monte Carlo method and was validated by static experiment. We validate that the feasibility of probe by dynamic experiments with measurement depth up to 6 cm. Above all, the bi-fiber quasi-axis probe is a promising supplementary probe for PDV for shock physics experiments.

RESUMO

A new approach for dual-mode (namely broadband mode and narrowband mode) terahertz (THz) pulses generation in a single lithium niobate (LN) crystal excited by spatially shaped tilted-pulse-front femtosecond (fs) laser pulse was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The two THz emission modes are generated simultaneously while spatially separated. Both central frequency and bandwidth of narrowband THz emission is controllable by in situ tuning the spatial modulation period and beam size of the fs-laser, and the broadband (0.1-1.5 THz) THz emission keeps almost unchanged while tuning the narrowband emission. Further optimization achieves the narrowband THz emission with energy spectral density up to 0.27 µJ/THz and with bandwidth narrowly down to 23 GHz. Such dual-mode THz source is useful for nonlinear THz optics, such as selected resonant THz excitation with broadband THz probe spectroscopy of crystalline matters.

RESUMO

While myelin deficit of the central nervous system leads to several severe diseases, the definitive diagnostic means are lacking. We proposed and performed terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) combined with chemometric techniques to discriminate and evaluate the severity of myelin deficit in mouse and rhesus monkey brains. The THz refractive index and absorption coefficient of paraffin-embedded brain tissues from both normal and mutant dysmyelinating mice are shown. Principal component analysis of time-domain THz signal (PCA-tdTHz) and absorption-refractive index relation of THz spectrum identified myelin deficit without exogenous labeling or any pretreatment. Further, with the established PCA-tdTHz, we evaluated the severity of myelin deficit lesions in rhesus monkey brain induced by experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, which is the most-studied animal model of multiple sclerosis. The results well matched the pathological analysis, indicating that PCA-tdTHz is a quick, powerful, evolving tool for identification and evaluation myelin deficit in preclinical animals and potentially in para-clinical human biopsy.

RESUMO

Pulsed terahertz spectroscopy is suitable for spectroscopic diagnostics of ultrafast events. However, the study of irreversible or single shot ultrafast events requires ability to record transient properties at multiple time delays, i.e., time resolved at single shot level, which is not available currently. Here by angular multiplexing use of femtosecond laser pulses, we developed and demonstrated a time resolved, transient terahertz time domain spectroscopy technique, where burst mode THz pulses were generated and then detected in a single shot measurement manner. The burst mode THz pulses contain 2 sub-THz pulses, and the time gap between them is adjustable up to 1 ns with picosecond accuracy, thus it can be used to probe the single shot event at two different time delays. The system can detect the sub-THz pulses at 0.1 THz-2.5 THz range with signal to noise ratio (SNR) of ∼400 and spectrum resolution of 0.05 THz. System design was described here, and optimizations of single shot measurement of THz pulses were discussed in detail. Methods to improve SNR were also discussed in detail. A system application was demonstrated where pulsed THz signals at different time delays of the ultrafast process were successfully acquired within single shot measurement. This time resolved transient terahertz time domain spectroscopy technique provides a new diagnostic tool for irreversible or single shot ultrafast events where dynamic information can be extracted at terahertz range within one-shot experiment.

RESUMO

A cylindrical lens telescope tilted-pulse-front pumping scheme was proposed for high energy terahertz (THz) pulse generation. This scheme allows higher pump energy to be used with lower saturation effects under high pump fluence, and higher THz generation efficiency was achieved within large range of pump energy. The optimum pump pulse duration and crystal cooling temperature for THz generation in LiNbO3 (LN) crystal were also researched systematically. Excited by 800-nm laser, up to 0.19 mJ THz pulse energy and 0.27% conversion efficiency was demonstrated under 800-nm 400-fs laser excitation with ~100-mJ pulse energy and 150-K LN cooling temperature.
