RESUMO

Respiratory infections are currently understood to be caused by pathogens released through the nose or mouth of an infected individual, and subsequently transmitted to susceptible hosts. These pathogens are enclosed in liquid particles that are aerosolized from the respiratory tract during activities such as breathing, speaking, sneezing, and coughing. These particles vary widely in size, ranging from submicron to several microns. While past research has largely overlooked the human respiratory system, recent analysis has revealed that the actual structure of the nasal cavity significantly influences the prediction of aerosol transmission during exhalation. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyze the aerosol transmission generated during exhalation from the nasal and oral cavities. Realistic nasal and oral cavity structures were taken into account, and authentic temperature distributions were applied to the surfaces. Additionally, inhalation conditions for susceptible individuals were established to evaluate the risk of inhalation-generated exposure. Through various simulation scenarios, we separately discussed the impact of environmental wind speed, separation distance, and exhalation flow rate. The simulation results indicate that environmental wind amplifies the complexity of the flow field and the transmission and deposition of particles between two individuals. Under ambient wind velocities of 0.5 m/s and 1 m/s, it was observed that over 80% of the particles with a diameter of 1 µm inhaled through the nasal cavity accounted for the total deposition on the infected individual. Furthermore, high exhalation flow rates exhibited higher deposition ratios at close distances, in line with our expectations. Therefore, it is advisable to minimize close contact as much as possible during periods of frequent respiratory infections, and to wear masks in order to reduce the risk of inhalation exposure.Implications: During the activities such as breathing, speaking, sneezing, and coughing, liquid particles containing pathogens are aerosolized from the respiratory tract and are released from nose or mouth through the nebulization. In this study, we investigated the transmission of aerosols from human exhalation in the outdoor environment, innovatively taking the real oral-nasal structure and the active inhalation of vulnerable people into consideration, and explored the human-to-human transmission of respiratory viruses. The results are beneficial for public health assessment and policy development.

RESUMO

Transpiration is a key process that couples the land-atmosphere exchange of water and carbon, and its maximum water transport ability affects plant productivity. Functional traits significantly influence the maximum transpiration rate; however, which factor plays the dominant role remains unknown. SAPFLUXNET dataset, which includes sap flux density of diverse species worldwide, provides fundamental data to test the importance of photosynthetic and hydraulic traits on maximum tree-level sap flux density (Js_max). Here, we investigated variations in Js_max of 2194 trees across 129 species using data from the SAPFLUXNET dataset, and analysed the relationship of Js_max with photosynthetic and hydraulic traits. Our results indicated that Js_max was positively correlated with photosynthetic traits at both leaf and tree level. Regarding hydraulic traits, Js_max was positively related to xylem hydraulic conductivity (Ks), leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity (Kl), xylem pressure inducing 50 % loss of hydraulic conductivity (P50), xylem vessel diameter (Vdia), and leaf-to-sapwood area ratio (AlAs). Random forest model showed that 87 % of the variability in Js_max can be explained by functional traits, and hydraulic traits (e.g., P50 and sapwood area, As) exerted larger effects on Js_max than photosynthetic traits. Moreover, trees with a lower sapwood area or depth could increase their sap flux density to compensate for the reduced whole-tree transpiration. Js_max of the angiosperms was significantly higher than that of the gymnosperms. Mean annual total precipitation (MAP) were positively related to Js_max with a weak correlation coefficient. Furthermore, Js_max showed a significant phylogenetic signal with Blomberg's K below 0.2. Overall, tree species with acquisitive resource economics or more efficient hydraulic systems show higher water transport capacity, and the efficiency of xylem hydraulic system rather than the demand for carbon uptake predominantly determines water transport capacity.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of instant versus text messaging intervention (TMI) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. Methods: This study was conducted in an infectious disease hospital of Jinan, China from October 2020 to June 2021, using non-randomized concurrent controlled design to compare the effectiveness of instant messaging intervention (IMI) versus TMI. The intervention strategies (health messaging, medication reminder, and peer education) and contents were consistent between the two groups, and the difference was service delivery method and type of information. The primary outcome was the proportion of achieving optimal ART adherence, defined as never missing any doses and delayed any doses more than 1 hour. Results: A total of 217 participants (including 72 in TMI group and 145 in IMI group) were included in the study. The proportion of achieving optimal adherence was higher in IMI group than TMI group at the first follow-up (90.2% versus 77.6%, p = 0.021) and second follow-up (86.5% versus 76.6%, p = 0.083). The effect of IMI versus TMI on improving ART adherence was found not to be statistically significant (risk ratio (RR) = 1.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95-3.94) in complete-case analysis. However, when excluding participants who did not adhere to the interventions, a significant improvement was observed (RR = 2.77, 95%CI: 1.21-6.38). More participants in IMI group expressed highly rated satisfaction to the intervention services than those in TMI group (67.3% versus 50.0%). Conclusions: The IMI demonstrated superior efficacy over TMI in improving ART adherence and satisfaction with intervention services. It is suggested that future digital health interventions targeting ART adherence should prioritize instant messaging with multimedia information in areas with Internet access. Trial registration: The study was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Register (ChiCTR), with number [ChiCTR2000041282].

RESUMO

Although studies have reported the modification effect of air pollutants on heat-related health risk, little is known on the modification effect among various particulate matter with different particle size on mortality. We aimed to investigate whether the associations of hot temperatures with daily mortality were modified by different air pollutant levels in Shandong Province, China. Daily data of air pollutants, meteorological factors, and mortality of 1,822 subdistricts in Shandong province from 2013 to 2018 were collected. We used a time-stratified case-crossover model with an interaction term between the cross-basis term for ambient temperature and the linear function of particulate matter ≤1 µm (PM1), PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone to obtain heat-mortality associations during the hot season. Results showed that the cumulative odds ratio of extreme heat on mortality over 0 to 10 days was 3.66 (95% CI: 3.10-4.31). The mortality risk during hot seasons was stronger at high air pollutant levels. The modification effect of particulate matters on heat-related mortality decreased by its aerodynamic diameter. Females and older adults over 75 years were more vulnerable to the modification effect of air pollutants, and significant differences were detected in the association between temperatures and mortality stratified by PM1 and PM2.5. Higher heat-related mortality risks were observed at high NO2 levels, especially for cardiorespiratory disease. The findings suggest that more consideration should be given to the combined effect of very fine particles and NO2 with ambient heat when developing healthcare strategies, and women and older adults should be given priority in health-related settings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and HIV prevention services uptake are inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the discrepancy between the perceived and actual HIV risk, and quantify the associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and three HIV prevention services utilization among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shandong province, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shandong province in June 2021. Participants were eligible if they were born biologically male, aged 18 years or older, had negative or unknown HIV status, and had sex with men in the past year. Participants were recruited online. The discrepancy between their perceived and actual risk of HIV infection was evaluated by calculating the Kappa value. Bayesian model averaging was used to assess the associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and HIV prevention services uptake. RESULTS: A total of 1136 MSM were recruited, most of them were 30 years old or younger (59.9%), single (79.5%), with at least college education level (74.7%). Most participants (97.4%) perceived that they had low risk of HIV infection, and 14.1% were assessed with high actual risk. The discrepancy between their perceived and actual risk of HIV infection was evaluated with a Kappa value of 0.076 (P < 0.001). HIV testing uptake had a weak association with perceived high HIV prevalence among social networks (aOR = 1.156, post probability = 0.547). The perceived high HIV prevalence among national MSM was positive related to willingness to use PrEP (aOR = 1.903, post probability = 0.943) and PEP (aOR = 1.737, post probability = 0.829). Perceived personal risk (aOR = 4.486, post probability = 0.994) and perceived HIV prevalence among social networks (aOR = 1.280, post probability = 0.572) were related to history of using PrEP. Perceived personal risk (aOR = 3.144, post probability = 0.952), actual risk (aOR = 1.890, post probability = 0.950), and perceived risk among social networks (aOR = 1.502, post probability = 0.786) were related to history of using PEP. CONCLUSIONS: There is discordance between perceived and actual personal risk of HIV infection among MSM in China. HIV risk assessment and education on HIV prevalence among MSM should be strengthened to assist high-risk populations aware their risk accurately and hence access HIV prevention services proactively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Astrocytes play a vital role in offering functional support for neurons, which are related to the pathogenic mechanism of depression. Ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1) is demonstrated with antidepressant-like activities. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate whether GRb1 can inhibit mitophagy-mediated astrocytic pyroptosis to protect neurons in depression. STUDY DESIGN: Model rats were subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for determining the in vivo antidepressant activity of GRb1. METHODS: The mitophagy-mediated antipyroptosis role of GRb1 was assessed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) + ATP-stimulated astrocytes. The mechanism by which GRb1 protects synaptic plasticity was investigated using hippocampal neurons incubated in an astrocyte medium. The rat depressive-like behaviors were determined through sucrose preference, forced swimming, and the open-field tests. Escitalopram was used in the anti-depression control of GRb1. Cyclosporin A (CsA), a mitophagy inhibitor, and interleukin (IL)-1ß were used to reverse the role of GRb1 in mitophagy and pyroptosis, respectively. RESULTS: GRb1 inhibited LPS-induced inflammation and activation in the astrocytes and repressed nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway. Also, GRb1 repressed LPS + ATP-promoted astrocytic pyroptosis. During GRb1 treatment, the activation of mitophagy with a decrease in ROS was observed in LPS + ATPs-stimulated astrocytes. CsA enhanced GRb1-decreased ROS and promoted astrocytic pyroptosis. The GRb1-treated astrocyte medium suppressed neuron death and increased neuron viability and synaptic density. Escitalopram and GRb1 improved the depressive-like behaviors of the rats. GRb1 activated mitophagy and inhibited astrocytic activation and pyroptosis in rats with depression. It also reduced impairments in synaptic structures and increased synaptic density in depressive-like rats. IL-1ß increased astrocytic pyroptosis and reversed GRb1-enhanced synaptic plasticity in the rats exposed to CUMS. There were no statistical changes in depressive-like behaviors between GRb1 and Escitalopram groups. CONCLUSION: GRb1 modulates mitophagy and the NF-κB pathway to inhibit astrocytic pyroptosis, thereby maintaining neurological homeostasis by repressing inflammation and enhancing synaptic plasticity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Patients with hypertension have a risk of depression. Morinda officinalis oligosaccharides (MOOs) have anti-depressant properties. In this study, we aimed to determine whether MOOs can improve the symptoms of depression in individuals with hypertension. METHODS: Dahl salt-sensitive rats fed with a high-salt diet were stimulated by chronic unpredictable mild stress to mimic hypertension with depression. Primary astrocytes and neurons were isolated from these rats. Astrocytes underwent LPS stimulation to simulate the inflammatory astrocytes during depression. MOOs were administrated at 0.1 mg/g/day in vivo and 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL in vitro. Mitophagy was inhibited using 5 mM 3-methyladenine (3-MA). Astrocyte-mediated neurotoxicity was detected by co-culturing astrocytes and neurons. RESULTS: MOOs decreased systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and mean arterial pressure, thereby improving depression-like behavior, including behavioral despair, lack of enthusiasm, and loss of pleasure during hypertension with depression. Furthermore, MOOs inhibited inflammation, astrocytic dysfunction, and mitochondrial damage in the brain. Then, MOOs promoted autophagosome and lysosome enriched in mitochondria in LPS-stimulated astrocytes. MOOs suppressed mitochondrial damage and the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1ß in astrocytes undergoing LPS stimulation. Importantly, MOOs rescued the impaired neurons co-cultured with astrocytes. The effects of MOOs on LPS-stimulated astrocytes were reversed by 3-MA. Finally, MOOs upregulated LPS-downregulated Mfn2 expression in astrocytes. Mfn2 inhibition partly reversed the effects of MOOs on hypertension with depression. Intriguingly, Mfn2 suppression activated PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway during MOOs treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Astrocytes develop neuroinflammation in response to mitochondrial damage during hypertension with depression. MOOs upregulated Mfn2 expression to activate the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway-mediated mitophagy, thereby removing impaired mitochondria in astrocytes. HIGHLIGHTS: 1. MOOs have anti-hypertensive and anti-depressive properties. 2. MOOs inhibit inflammation and injury in astrocytes during hypertension with depression. 3. MOOs induce mitophagy activation in inflammatory astrocytes with mitochondrial damage. 4. MOOs upregulate Mfn2 expression in astrocytes. 5. Mfn2 activates mitophagy to resist mitochondrial damage in astrocytes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This investigation aims to determine the antidepressant role of Xingpijieyu formula (XPJYF) mediated via gut microbiota (GM)-brain axis. METHODS: We collected fecal microbiota from patients with depressive disorder (DD) and cultured microbiota in vitro. Some of microbiota were transplanted into germ-free rats with the intragastric administration of XPJYF grain at the dose of 1.533 g/kg/day. The behaviors were studied by forced swimming test, open field test, sucrose preference test, and body weight. Products of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, neurotransmitter, and serum cytokines were investigated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a biomarker of astrocyte, was quantified using immunofluorescence. Microbiota culturing in vitro after XPJYF treatment was analyze by 16 s RNA sequencing technology. We used lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to mimic activated rat primary astrocyte in vitro. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cytokines, and oxidative stress factors were determined by western blotting, and glycometabolism in astrocyte was investigated by 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) uptake, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and glucose-1-phosphate (G1P) kits. RESULTS: Microbiota composition during 8 mg/ml of XPJYF (H12-8) for 12 h showed the more consistency. Lactococcus is enriched in DD-derived microbiota composition, and Biffdobacterium and Lactobacillus in H12-8 group. GLUCOSE1PMETAB-PWY and PWY-7328 of which biofunctions were dominantly encoded by Biffdobacterium were the top two of altered pathways. XPJYF improved behaviors and repressed astrocyte activation in depression rats. XPJYF elevated 2-DG uptake, ATP, glucose-1-phosphate, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and inhibited cytokines and oxidative stress in LPS-induced astrocyte. CONCLUSION: XPJYF treatment targets inflammation, activation, and glycometabolim in astrocyte via gut microbiota modulation, thereby improve animal behaviors, HPA axis dysfunction, and neurotransmitter synthesis in depression rats.

RESUMO

Disclosure of HIV status offers potential benefits to individuals and is also good for public health. Limited studies have been conducted to gain insight into the current situation and associated factors of HIV disclosure among HIV-positive Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) in the era of "treat all." We carried out a cross-sectional study among MSM receiving antiretroviral therapy from October 2020 to January 2021 at a hospital in Jinan, China. We used univariate and multivariable logistic regression to examine the factors associated with general disclosure and disclosure to family, friends, and sexual partners. Of the 585 participants recruited, 62.2% reported HIV disclosure, among which 25.3% had disclosed their status to family members, 25.3% had disclosed it to friends, and 28.4% had disclosed it to partners. The findings suggest that HIV disclosure is more likely to occur among individuals who are younger, married/cohabiting, and who self-identify as homosexual/bisexual. Participants with higher education levels or personal monthly incomes are less likely to disclose their HIV status. Furthermore, related factors of disclosure vary across the types of disclosure targets. Given the positive outcomes of disclosure, interventions and implementation research to facilitate it are urgently needed for MSM.

RESUMO

Annual gross primary productivity (AGPP) is the basis for grain production and terrestrial carbon sequestration. Mapping regional AGPP from site measurements provides methodological support for analysing AGPP spatiotemporal variations thereby ensures regional food security and mitigates climate change. Based on 641 site-year eddy covariance measuring AGPP from China, we built an AGPP mapping scheme based on its formation and selected the optimal mapping way, which was conducted through analysing the predicting performances of divergent mapping tools, variable combinations, and mapping approaches in predicting observed AGPP variations. The reasonability of the selected optimal scheme was confirmed by assessing the consistency between its generating AGPP and previous products in spatiotemporal variations and total amount. Random forest regression tree explained 85 % of observed AGPP variations, outperforming other machine learning algorithms and classical statistical methods. Variable combinations containing climate, soil, and biological factors showed superior performance to other variable combinations. Mapping AGPP through predicting AGPP per leaf area (PAGPP) explained 86 % of AGPP variations, which was superior to other approaches. The optimal scheme was thus using a random forest regression tree, combining climate, soil, and biological variables, and predicting PAGPP. The optimal scheme generating AGPP of Chinese terrestrial ecosystems decreased from southeast to northwest, which was highly consistent with previous products. The interannual trend and interannual variation of our generating AGPP showed a decreasing trend from east to west and from southeast to northwest, respectively, which was consistent with data-oriented products. The mean total amount of generated AGPP was 7.03 ± 0.45 PgC yr-1 falling into the range of previous works. Considering the consistency between the generated AGPP and previous products, our optimal mapping way was suitable for mapping AGPP from site measurements. Our results provided a methodological support for mapping regional AGPP and other fluxes.

RESUMO

It was to investigate the neuroprotective mechanism of tanshinone after cerebral infarction via the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant reaction element (ARE) signaling pathway. Forty specific pathogen-free (SPF) Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were selected, all of which were male, approximately seven weeks old, weighing 250 ± 25 g. They were randomly divided into a model group, a non-model operation group, a positive control group, and an experimental group with ten SD rats in each group. The model of cerebral infarction in rats was established by the wire occlusion method. The model group and non-model operation group (control group) were injected with normal saline daily, the negative control group was injected with Keap1 gene inhibitor daily, and the experimental group was injected with tanshinone IIA (10 mg·kg-1·d-1) daily. Animal behavior analysis was performed on the 7th day after the operation, and pathology and the neuroprotective effects of tanshinone IIA on cells were assessed, including cell proliferation, autophagy, oxidative damage, and mitochondrial membrane permeability. The neuroprotective mechanism based on the Keap1-Nrf2/ARE pathway was explored and analyzed. Compared with the model group, the number of Keap1 proteins in the experimental group and the control group was substantially reduced (P < 0.05), and the experimental group was substantially different from the model group (P < 0.01). The protein expression of Nrf2, HO-1, and NQO1 increased substantially (P < 0.05), and the experimental group was substantially different from the model group (P < 0.01). In summary, tanshinone IIA promoted the proliferation of nerve cells, inhibited the production of cellular reactive oxygen species, inhibited the change in mitochondrial membrane potential, and activated the Keap1-Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway. It also induced and regulated the upregulation of downstream NQO1, HO-1, etc. and protected cells from cerebral infarction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Research on the relationship between disclosure of HIV status to male sexual partners (HIV disclosure) and quality of life (QOL) revealed complex and even contradictory results. The impact of HIV disclosure on various domains of QOL and the mediation effect between them are unclear. The purposes of this study were to explore the impact of HIV disclosure on QOL among men who have sex with men (MSM), and whether HIV treatment self-efficacy mediated these relationships. METHODS: The data came from a baseline survey on the design of a randomized control trial conducted in Shandong, China. A total of 579 MSM patients were included. SPSS 24.0 was used to conduct independent samples t test, one-way analysis of variance and nonparametric tests and the PROCESS macro was used to conduct mediation analysis. RESULTS: Among 579 participants, 16.06% disclosed their HIV infection status to their male sexual partners. The effect of HIV disclosure on QOL was mediated by treatment self-efficacy. Self-efficacy played partial mediating role in social relationships, meaning that HIV disclosure had both direct and indirect effects on this factor. In the overall QOL and domains of physical, psychological, independence, and environment, HIV disclosure had an indirect effect only through self-efficacy and no significant effect on the spirituality domain. CONCLUSIONS: The results emphasize the importance of HIV disclosure and self-efficacy on the QOL of MSM patients and suggest that health care providers should assist MSM patients in deciding whether to disclose their HIV status during daily medical services.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Consistent and complete adherence is considered an essential requirement for patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ART duration on ART adherence, identify the trend of complete adherence, and compare the factors associated with ART adherence between short-term and long-term ART group among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Jinan of China. METHODS: MSM living with HIV aged 18 or above and currently on ART were recruited from October to December 2020 using convenience sampling. Univariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used to evaluate the impact of ART duration on adherence and compare factors associated with ART adherence between subgroups. The Mann-Kendall test was used to identify the trend of complete adherence. RESULTS: A total of 585 participants were included in analysis, consisting of 352 on short-term ART (ART initiation ≤ 3 years) and 233 on long-term ART (ART initiation > 3 years). Significant difference of complete ART adherence between short-term and long-term ART group was detected (79.8% vs. 69.1%, P = 0.003). Multivariable analysis showed that men with longer ART duration were less likely to report complete ART adherence (AOR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.81-0.95). A descending trend of complete adherence was identified (Z = 1.787, P = 0.037). Alcohol use and lack of medication reminders were barriers to complete adherence for both of the subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Sustained efforts to encourage maintaining adherence for a lifetime are necessary, especially for those on long-term ART. Future interventions should be tailored to subgroups with different ART duration and individuals with specific characteristics.

RESUMO

AIM: The investigation aims to evaluate the potential effect of Shugan Granule (SGKL) on the gut, brain, and behaviors in rats exposed to chronic restraint stress (CRS). METHODS: The fecal microbiota and metabolite changes were studied in rats exposed to CRS and treated with SGKL (0.1 mg/kg/day). Depressive behaviors of these rats were determined through an open-field experiment, forced swimming test, sucrose preference, and weighing. Moreover, LPS-stimulated microglia and CRS-stimulated rats were treated with SGKL to investigate the regulation between SGKL and the PI3K/Akt/pathway, which is inhibited by LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor. RESULTS: (i) SGKL improved the altered behaviors in CRS-stimulated rats; (ii) SGKL ameliorated the CRS-induced neuronal degeneration and tangled nerve fiber and also contributed to the recovery of intestinal barrier injury in these rats; (iii) SGKL inhibited the hippocampus elevations of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in response to CRS modeling; (iv) based on the principal coordinates analysis (PCoA), SGKL altered α-diversity indices and shifted ß-diversity in CRS-stimulated rats; (v) at the genus level, SGKL decreased the CRS-enhanced abundance of Bacteroides; (vi) Butyricimonas and Candidatus Arthromitus were enriched in SGKL-treated rats; (vii) altered gut microbiota and metabolites were correlated with behaviors, inflammation, and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway; (viii) SGKL increased the LPS-decreased phosphorylation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway in microglia and inhibited the LPS-induced microglial activation; (ix) PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway inactivation reversed the SGKL effects in CRS rats. CONCLUSION: SGKL targets the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway by altering gut microbiota and metabolites, which ameliorates altered behavior and inflammation in the hippocampus.

RESUMO

Afforestation is an effective method to increase carbon (C) sinks and address climate change. It is crucial to understand how the stand growth affects C sequestration capacity, especially when the trade-offs with timber production from plantations have not been fully examined. We used a chronosequence approach to estimate C storage in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) plantations (including the trees, understory, litter, and soils) at seven stand ages (3, 8-11, 16, 21, 25, 29, and 32 years). Ecosystem C storage increased nonlinearly from 76.4 to 282.2 t ha-1 with stand age and was fitted with a logistic model that had a maximum C storage and age of 271.9 t ha-1 and 33 years, respectively, to reach 95% of the maximum stored C. The C increment was mainly contributed by an increase in tree biomass, which ranged from 2.8 to 177.7 t ha-1 and comprised 4-64% of the total ecosystem C. Live root C (sum of the stump, coarse, and fine root C) showed a logistic increase from 2.0 to 26.3 t ha-1 with stand age and constituted 2.5-9.3% of ecosystem C. Understory plants and litter represented a small pool (<2% of ecosystem C). The C storage in shrubs and litter slightly increased, while that in herbs decreased as the stands aged. Soil C storage was an important and relatively stable pool, ranging from 69.6 to 130.1 t ha-1. Stand volume was also best fitted with a logistic model with a maximum value of 552.6 m3 ha-1. Additionally, the time needed to reach 95% of the maximum volume was 25 years. Hence, extending the rotation age to over 30 years for Chinese fir plantations could potentially maximize the synergistic benefits of C storage to mitigate climate change and obtain timber products for economic profit.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Forest ecosystems play an important role in carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, and achieving China's target to become carbon (C) neutral by 2060. However, changes in C storage and net primary production (NPP) in natural secondary forests stemming from tree growth and future climate change have not yet been investigated in subtropical areas in China. Here, we used data from 290 inventory plots in four secondary forests [evergreen broad-leaved forest (EBF), deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved mixed forest (DEF), deciduous broad-leaved forest (DBF), and coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (CDF)] at different restoration stages and run a hybrid model (TRIPLEX 1.6) to predict changes in stand carbon storage and NPP under two future climate change scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). RESULTS: The runs of the hybrid model calibrated and validated by using the data from the inventory plots suggest significant increase in the carbon storage by 2060 under the current climate conditions, and even higher increase under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios. In contrast to the carbon storage, the simulated EBF and DEF NPP declines slightly over the period from 2014 to 2060. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained results lead to conclusion that proper management of China's subtropical secondary forests could be considered as one of the steps towards achieving China's target to become carbon neutral by 2060.

RESUMO

Ginsenoside Rg1 is the principal active ingredient in ginseng. The antidepressant effects of Rg1 have been validated; however, the specific underlying mechanism of this effect needs further research. Rats were subjected to the chronic restraint stress (CRS) depression model. Rg1, or a positive control drug, was administered to the rats. Depression-like behaviours were evaluated through behavioural experiments. Cytokine, mRNA, protein, ATP, and mitochondria DNA levels were detected using the indicated methods. Lentivirus-packaged plasmids were injected into the rat brain for GAS5 overexpression or knockdown. In vitro mitochondrial dysfunction was evaluated by detecting mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial membrane potential. Direct interaction between GAS5 and EZH2 was validated by RNA immunoprecipitation and RNA pull-down assay. The enrichment of EZH2 and H3K27me3 was evaluated through chromatin immunoprecipitation quantitative real-time PCR. Rg1 treatment alleviated depression-like behaviours, microglial activation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in CRS rats. Similarly, GAS5 knockdown revealed a similar protective effect of Rg1 treatment. GAS5 overexpression in the rat brain compromised the protective effect of Rg1 treatment. Moreover, Rg1 treatment or GAS5 knockdown attenuated microglial activation and mitochondrial dysfunction in vitro. Mechanically, GAS5 was suppressed SOCS3 and NRF2 expression by facilitating EZH2-mediated transcriptional repression. Rg1 attenuated microglial activation and improved mitochondrial dysfunction in depression by downregulating GAS5 expression. Mechanically, GAS5 might regulate microglial activation and mitochondrial dysfunction via the epigenetic suppression of NRF2 and SOCS3.

RESUMO

Total solar radiation is an important factor affecting carbon exchange in forest ecosystem. In order to understand the effects of radiation change on carbon exchange in Chinese fir plantation, long-term monitoring data of carbon dioxide flux and meteorological factors measured by open eddy covariance system and meteorological gradient observation system were used in this study. The clearness index (kt) was used to represent the condition of solar radiation. We analyzed the effects of kt on net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE) in the central subtropical Chinese fir plantation during the growing season (from April to October). The results showed that total solar radiation in clear sky was usually higher in the morning than that in the afternoon, and that NEE was lower in the morning than in the afternoon. Such difference in NEE reached the maximum when the solar elevation angle was about 50°. At the medium kt(0.42-0.52), carbon absorption of Chinese fir plantation was the strongest. The ave-rage maximum relative change of NEE in 10 years in different solar elevation angles ranged from 11.0% to 29.4%, while the minimum and maximum critical values appeared at 35°-40° and 45°-50°, respectively. When kt was at the moderate degree due to the existence of clouds, carbon absorption and diffuse photosynthetically active radiation of Chinese fir plantation reached the maximum, and the latter might be the main reason for the former. Moderate radiation condition with the presence of cloud clould promote NEE of Chinese fir plantation and lead to largest carbon absorption.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents are at a special stage of physical and mental development, which is a susceptible period for mental disorders. Since the outbreak of coronavirus pneumonia in December 2019, long term stress may have negative effects on the mental health of the adolescents. In the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the study was designed to investigate the mental and psychological health of adolescents in China and its possible related factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was adopted using a structured questionnaire which were distributed through the Internet to measure depression, anxiety, life events and stress related factors. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses were conducted to process the data. RESULTS: The final sample comprised 795 adolescents. The total detection rate of depression was 76.48% and the total detection rate of anxiety was 33.08%. ANOVA showed that there were significant differences in depression scores in terms of gender, anxiety scores, history of mental disorders, COVID-19 knowledge reserve, family and social contradictions (p<0.05). And there were significant differences in anxiety scores in terms of gender, depression scores, mental health knowledge reserves, family and social contradictions (p<0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that anxiety score, health status and COVID-19 knowledge reserve were positively associated with depression score (p<0.01), and history of psychosocial disorders was negatively associated with depression score (p<0.05); depression score, family and social contradictions were significantly positively correlated with anxiety score (p<0.01), and history of mental disorders was significantly negatively correlated with SDS score (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: During the outbreak of COVID-19, adolescent students with better understanding of the pandemic, more complete knowledge of mental health, and better family and social relationship had less impact on their mental health. Therefore, to ensure a sound social support system, elaborate health instruction, and family communication and mutual understanding are conducive to alleviating the psychological stress caused by the epidemic, and it is positive for adolescent students to maintain a good mental health.

RESUMO

Introduction: Numerous studies have reported the modification of particulate matters (PMs) on the association between cold temperature and health. However, it remains uncertain whether the modification effect may vary by size of PMs, especially in Shandong Province, China where the disease burdens associated with cold temperature and PMs are both substantial. This study aimed to examine various interactive effects of cold exposure and ambient PMs with diameters ≤1/2.5 µm (PM1 and PM2.5) on premature deaths in Shandong Province, China. Methods: In the 2013-2018 cold seasons, data on daily mortality, PM1 and PM2.5, and weather conditions were collected from the 1822 sub-districts of Shandong Province. A time-stratified case-crossover study design was performed to quantify the cumulative association between ambient cold and mortality over lag 0-12 days, with a linear interactive term between temperature and PM1 and PM2.5 additionally added into the model. Results: The mortality risk increased with temperature decline, with the cumulative OR of extreme cold (-16.9°C, the 1st percentile of temperature range) being 1.83 (95% CI: 1.66, 2.02), compared with the minimum mortality temperature. The cold-related mortality risk was 2.20 (95%CI: 1.83, 2.64) and 2.24 (95%CI: 1.78, 2.81) on high PM1 and PM2.5 days, which dropped to 1.60 (95%CI: 1.39, 1.84) and 1.60 (95%CI: 1.37, 1.88) on low PM1 and PM2.5 days. PM1 showed greater modification effect for per unit concentration increase than PM2.5. For example, for each 10?g/m3 increase in PM1 and PM2.5, the mortality risk associated with extreme cold temperature increased by 7.6% (95% CI: 1.3%, 14.2%) and 2.6% (95% CI: -0.7%, 5.9%), respectively. Discussion: The increment of smaller PMs' modification effect varied by population subgroups, which was particularly strong in the elderly aged over 75 years and individuals with middle school education and below. Specific health promotion strategies should be developed towards the greater modification effect of smaller PMs on cold effect.
