RESUMO

With high prevalence and substantial mortality, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are significant public health concerns. Utilizing a large, population-based dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, our study probes the relationship between COPD prevalence and hepatic steatosis and fibrosis, as measured by Vibration-Controlled Transient Elastography. We analyzed data from 693 individuals with COPD and 7229 without. Through weighted multivariate logistic regression analysis, a restricted cubic spline curve, and threshold effect analysis, we investigated the correlation between the severity of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis and the presence of COPD. Our findings revealed a positive correlation between the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and COPD prevalence [OR = 1.03 (95% CI 1.01, 1.05)], even after multivariate adjustment. Furthermore, we observed a U-shaped association between CAP and COPD, where the inflection point, CAP value of 264.85 dB/m, corresponded to the lowest COPD prevalence. Our study emphasizes a substantial and complex link between hepatic steatosis and COPD. These findings urge healthcare professionals to factor liver health into COPD management and prompt further exploration into the underlying mechanisms. This could pave the way for the development of improved prevention and treatment strategies.

RESUMO

Bone development and lung function are integral to child and adolescent health. Both influence an individual's overall well-being and potentially affect long-term health. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study aims to elucidate the relationship between lung function and bone mineral density (BMD) in a representative sample of children and adolescents. The analysis covered 3410 participants aged 8 to 19 years. We employed weighted multivariate linear regression and restricted cubic spline curve visualizations to explore the intricate association between lung function metrics, particularly first-second expiratory volume 1 second/forced vital capacity ratio, and lumbar BMD. Our data indicated a positive association between lung function and lumbar BMD in children and adolescents. Specifically, higher lung function metrics were linked with increased lumbar BMD. This association was more pronounced in younger participants or those with a lower body mass index. A significant positive relationship exists between lung function and BMD in the pediatric population. Recognizing this association is crucial for holistic health strategies for children and adolescents. This study underscores the need for integrated health monitoring during formative years, which can influence health trajectories as these individuals transition to adulthood.

RESUMO

Sludge biochar(BC), which was prepared by the pyrolysis of waste-activated sludge at 450℃, was applied for peroxymonosulfate(PMS) activation to construct a BC/PMS system for ciprofloxacin(CIP) degradation. The physical and chemical properties of BC were studied using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS), a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR), X-ray diffraction(XRD), a Zeta potential analyzer, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy(EPR). The effects of BC dosage, PMS dosage, initial pH value, and inorganic anions on CIP removal in the BC/PMS system were investigated. Further, the degradation mechanism of the BC/PMS system was speculated through the free radical quenching experiment and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analysis. The results showed that the CIP degradation rate was 49.09% at a BC dosage of 1.0 g·L-1, PMS of 3.0 mmol·L-1, CIP of 20 mg·L-1, and pH of 6.0 in 120 min. SO42- and NO3- had no obvious effect on the removal of CIP in the BC/PMS system, whereas HCO3- and Cl-could inhibit CIP degradation significantly. The CIP removal in the BC/PMS system was attributed to the common function of the radical pathway dominated by ·OH and SO4-· and the non-radical pathway dominated by 1O2. The CIP degradation pathway mainly included piperazine ring opening and hydroxylation reaction.

RESUMO

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) represents a prevalent form of cancer, with low early diagnosis rates and high mortality rates, posing a global health challenge. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) assume a crucial role within the tumor immune microenvironment (TME) of LUAD. Here, a collection of 97 HSP-related genes (HSPGs) was assembled based on prior literature reports, of which 36 HSPGs were differentially expressed in LUAD. In The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort, we constructed a prognostic model for risk stratification and prognosis prediction by integrating 13 HSPGs. In addition, the prognostic significance and predictive efficacy of the HSP-related riskscore were examined and validated in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) cohort. To facilitate the clinical use of this riskscore, we also established a nomogram scale by verifying its effectiveness through different methods. In light of these outcomes, we concluded a significant correlation between HSPs and TME in LUAD, and the riskscore can be a reliable prognostic indicator. Furthermore, this study evaluated the differences in immunophenoscore, tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion score, and sensitivity to several common chemotherapy drugs among LUAD individuals in different risk groups, which may aid in clinical decision-making for immune therapy and chemotherapy in LUAD individuals.

RESUMO

A novel and recyclable composite material, Fe3O4/N co-doped sludge biochar (FNBC), was developed from original sludge biochar (BC) and found to have excellent stability and superior catalytic capacity during the ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation under the action of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In the FNBC/PMS system, an approximately complete removal of CIP was achieved within 60 min under the condition of 1.0 g/L FNBC, 3.0 mM PMS, and 20 mg/L CIP, which was about 2.08 times of that in BC/PMS system (48.01%). Besides, FNBC/PMS system could effectively remove CIP under the influence of wide pH (2.0-10.0) or inorganic ions compared with BC/PMS system. Moreover, it was found that there were radical produced under the effect of Fe element, defects, functional groups, pyridinic N and pyrrolic N and non-radical caused by graphitic N, carbon atoms next to the iron atoms and better adsorption capacity in the FNBC/PMS system. It was observed that the contribution of hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2), which were the main reactive oxygen species, during the CIP degradation, were 75.80%, 11.49% and 10.26%, respectively. Furthermore, total organic carbon (TOC) variation was analyzed and the degradation pathway of CIP was speculated. The application of this material could combine the recycling of sludge with the effective degradation of refractory organic pollutant, providing an environmentally friendly and economic method.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have investigated the clinical significance of securin expression in solid cancers; however, the results have been inconsistent. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis of published studies to assess the clinical value of securin expression in patients with solid cancers. METHODS: The Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Web of Science, PubMed, and EMDASE databases were searched for eligible studies (from inception up to April 2021). Bioinformatics analysis based on The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset was also performed to evaluate the prognostic value of securin expression. RESULTS: A total of 25 articles with 26 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis implied that high securin expression was positively correlated with unfavorable overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio = 1.52, 95% CI, 1.33-1.73; P < .001) and lymph node metastasis (odd ratio = 2.96, 95% CI, 2.26-3.86; P < .001). Consistently, our bioinformatics analysis showed that increased securin expression was associated with worse OS and shorter disease-free survival in cancer patients. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that securin overexpression was positively associated with metastasis and inversely related to the prognosis of patients with solid cancers. However, additional high-quality studies should be conducted to validate these findings.

RESUMO

In this study, biochar derived from municipal sludge (SBC) was modified by CoFe-Layered double hydroxides (CoFe-LDH), and used as adsorbent and oxidant for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) for the first time. Under the optimal conditions, the CIP removal rate is increased by 24% compared with the single SBC, while the removal rates of total organic carbon and total nitrogen in the modified one are increased by 24% and 27%, respectively. Mechanism investigation suggested that the specific surface area and adsorption sites of modified biochar increased, and more CIP was adsorbed to the composite surface and then oxidized by more environmental persistent free radicals contained in the CoFe-LDH@SBC, when the adsorbed CIP molecules was oxidized and degraded, the adsorption sites can be freed and thus new CIP could be adsorbed to the CoFe-LDH@SBC. In addition, the plausible degradation pathways of CIP were proposed according to high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculation. It not only reveals that CoFe-LDH@SBC has the high ability of adsorption and oxidation for CIP removal but also sheds novel insight into the application of biochar.

RESUMO

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a predominant malignancy, and its high mortality prompts us to incessantly probe the relevant targeted treatment. This work intended to study the molecular mechanism of ESPL1 in LUAD. Bioinformatics analysis was performed for pan-cancer and prognosis analysis as well as target gene prediction. Expression of ESPL1 mRNA and let-7c-5p was determined via qRT-PCR, and western blot was employed to detect protein level of ESPL1. Dual-luciferase reporter gene method verified the interaction between ESPL1 and let-7c-5p. Thereafter, CCK-8, wound healing, Transwell, and flow cytometry assays were utilized to investigate proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of LUAD cells. The results revealed that ESPL1 was upregulated in LUAD, which was associated with poor prognosis. Overexpressed ESPL1 promoted LUAD cells to invade, proliferate, and migrate. Furthermore, ESPL1 was a target gene of let-7c-5p. Let-7c-5p was downregulated in LUAD cells, and played a suppressive role in LUAD malignant development, while reversed by ESPL1. Taken together, it was posited that let-7c-5p/ESPL1 may be underlying therapeutic targets of LUAD.

RESUMO

A novel system combined with photocatalytic fuel cell and electrochemical system assisted by reverse electrodialysis (PREC) is proposed for H2O2 production and electricity generation. Results demonstrated the H2O2 concentration increased gradually with time and reached around 940 mg/L at 24 h. The optimum air flow rate was 15 L/min. The current efficiency was 31.3%. The maximum short-circuit current density, maximum open-circuit voltage and maximum power density were 0.95 mA/cm2, 1.52 V and 68 W/m2. The salinity-driven potential, created with the five pairs of the HC and LC cells in the PREC, was calculated to be 0.72 V. Additionally, the energy efficiency (ηE) was 40.5%. The integrated system is confirmed to be serviced as an efficient technology for H2O2 electro-genneration and salinity-gradient energy utilization simultaneously.

RESUMO

: Although adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) hold the promise of effective therapy for myocardial infarction, low cardiac retention of implanted ASCs has hindered their therapeutic efficiency. We investigated whether an externally applied static magnetic field (SMF) enhances cardiac localization of "magnetic" cells and promotes heart function recovery when ASCs are preloaded with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles. The influence of SMF (0.1 Tesla) on the biological activities of SPIO-labeled ASCs (SPIOASCs) was investigated first. Fifty-six female rats with myocardial infarction underwent intramyocardial injection of cell culture medium (CCM) or male SPIOASCs with or without the subcutaneous implantable magnet (CCM-magnet or SPIOASC-magnet). Four weeks later, endothelial differentiation, angiogenic cytokine secretion, angiogenesis, cardiomyocyte apoptosis, cell retention, and cardiac performance were examined. The 0.1-Tsela SMF did not adversely affect the viability, proliferation, angiogenic cytokine secretion, and DNA integrity of SPIOASCs. The implanted SPIOASCs could differentiate into endothelial cell, incorporate into newly formed vessels, and secrete multiple angiogenic cytokines. Four weeks after cell transplantation, the number of cardiac SPIOASCs was significantly increased, vascular density was markedly enlarged, fewer apoptotic cardiomyocytes were present, and heart contractile function was substantially improved in the SPIOASC-magnet treated rats in comparison with the SPIOASC-treated rats. The SPIOASCs could differentiate into endothelial cells, incorporate into vessels, promote angiogenesis, and inhibit ischemic cardiomyocyte apoptosis. An externally applied SMF offered a secure environment for biological properties of SPIOASCs, increased the cardiac retention of implanted magnetic SPIOASCs, and further enhanced heart function recovery after myocardial infarction. SIGNIFICANCE: This pilot proof-of-concept study suggests that a 0.1-Tesla static magnetic field does not adversely affect the viability, proliferation, angiogenic cytokine secretion, or DNA integrity of the superparamagnetic iron oxide-labeled adipose-derived stem cells (SPIOASCs). Implantation of adipose-derived stem cells promotes myocardial neovascularization and inhibits ischemic cardiomyocyte apoptosis through endothelial differentiation, incorporation into vessels, and paracrine factor secretion. An externally applied static magnetic field enhanced myocardial retention of intramyocardially injected "magnetic" SPIOASCs and promoted cardiac function recovery after myocardial infarction. With further preclinical optimization, this approach may improve the outcome of current stem cell therapy for ischemic myocardial infarction.
