Humic acid (HA), a principal constituent of natural organic matter (NOM), manifests ubiquitously across diverse ecosystems and can significantly influence the environmental behaviors of Cd(II) in aquatic systems. Previous studies on NOM-Cd(II) interactions have primarily focused on the immobilization of Cd(II) solids, but little is known about the colloidal stability of organically complexed Cd(II) particles in the environment. In this study, we investigated the formation of HA-Cd(II) colloids and quantified their aggregation, stability, and transport behaviors in a saturated porous media representative of typical subsurface conditions. Results from batch experiments indicated that the relative quantity of HA-Cd(II) colloids increased with increasing C/Cd molar ratio and that the carboxyl functional groups of HA dominated the stability of HA-Cd(II) colloids. The results of correlation analysis between particle size, critical aggregation concentration (CCC), and zeta potential indicated that both Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) and non-DLVO interactions contributed to the enhanced colloidal stability of HA-Cd(II) colloids. Column results further confirmed that the stable HA-Cd(II) colloid can transport fast in a saturated media composed of clean sand. Together, this study provides new knowledge of the colloidal behaviors of NOM-Cd(II) nanoparticles, which is important for better understanding the ultimate cycling of Cd(II) in aquatic systems.

Acne is a common and chronic skin condition characterized by high incidence, recurrent symptoms and difficult cure. Summarizing the clinical treatment experience, it was found that the powder for ascending and descending was effective in the treatment of acne. Our aim was to use network pharmacology and molecular docking to reveal the hub genes, biological functions, and signaling pathways of powder for ascending and descending against acne. First, the chemical components and target genes of PAD were sifted using the TCMSP and HERB database. The targets of acne were obtained simultaneously from the CTD, OMIM and GeneCards database. The obtained drug targets and disease targets were imported into the R language software to draw Venn diagrams. Then, the potential targets were imported into the String website to construct a protein interaction network diagram. And Cytoscape software was used for topological analysis to screen the core targets, and the core targets were analyzed by GO functional enrichment and KEGG pathway enrichment. Finally, molecular docking was used to verify the predictions of key genes' reliability. The core targets of the treatment of acne were TNF, GADPH, IL-6 and so on. The results of enrichment analysis showed that the treatment of acne with PAD may be related to TNF signaling pathway and AGE-RAGE signaling pathway. The molecular docking verification showed that the components were well bound to the core targets of acne, and the docking ability of stigmasterol and TNF (-12.73 kcal/mol) was particularly outstanding.

Carbon storage and the aboveground biomass of farmland provide practical significance for understanding global changes and ensuring food production and quality. Based on soil carbon storage, aboveground biomass, climate, geochemistry, and other data from 19 farmland ecological stations in China, we analysed the distribution characteristics of farmland carbon storage in topsoil and aboveground biomass. We notably revealed the response direction and degree of climate and geochemical factors to farmland carbon storage in topsoil and aboveground biomass. The results indicated that the average carbon stocks of farmland in different regions ranged from 0.28 to 7.91 kg m-2, the average fresh weight of the aboveground biomass (FAB) ranged from 1370.64 to 5997.28 g m-2, and the average dry weight of the aboveground biomass (DAB) ranged from 119.95 to 852.35 g m-2. The least angle regression (LARS) and the best subsection selection regression (BSS) showed that evapotranspiration and extreme low temperatures were significant climatic factors affecting carbon sequestration and aboveground biomass on long-time scales. The linear mixed-effects model (LMM) further showed that AN and AP had significant long-term effects on carbon sequestration and aboveground biomass (p < 0.05), with AN having the highest contribution to SOC%, FAB, and DAB. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that carbon sequestration and aboveground biomass in agricultural fields were significantly positively correlated (p < 0.05). Introduction: The detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) could provide a potential diagnostic modality for the early detection and surveillance of colorectal cancers. However, the overall diagnostic accuracy of the proposed tests remains uncertain. Objective: This systematic review is to ascertain the diagnostic accuracy of using VOC analysis techniques and electronic noses (e-noses) as noninvasive diagnostic methods for colorectal cancer within the realm of clinical practice. Methods: A systematic search was undertaken on PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to scrutinize pertinent studies published from their inception to September 1, 2023. Only studies conducted on human subjects were included. Meta-analysis was performed using a bivariate model to obtain summary estimates of sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood ratios. The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 tool was deployed for quality assessment. The protocol for this systematic review was registered in PROSPERO, and PRISMA guidelines were used for the identification, screening, eligibility, and selection process. Results: This review encompassed 32 studies, 22 studies for VOC analysis and 9 studies for e-nose, one for both, with a total of 4688 subjects in the analysis. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of VOC analysis for CRC detection were 0.88 (95% CI, 0.83-0.92) and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.78-0.90), respectively. In the case of e-nose, the pooled sensitivity was 0.87 (95% CI, 0.83-0.90), and the pooled specificity was 0.78 (95% CI, 0.62-0.88). The area under the receiver operating characteristic analysis (ROC) curve for VOC analysis and e-noses were 0.93 (95% CI, 0.90-0.95) and 0.90 (95% CI, 0.87-0.92), respectively. Conclusion: The outcomes of this review substantiate the commendable accuracy of VOC analysis and e-nose technology in detecting CRC. VOC analysis has a higher specificity than e-nose for the diagnosis of CRC and a sensitivity comparable to that of e-nose. However, numerous limitations, including a modest sample size, absence of standardized collection methods, lack of external validation, and a notable risk of bias, were identified. Consequently, there exists an imperative need for expansive, multi-center clinical studies to elucidate the applicability and reproducibility of VOC analysis or e-nose in the noninvasive diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Colloids can potentially affect the efficacy of traditional acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment methods such as precipitation and filtration. However, it is unclear how colloids affect antimony (Sb) migration in AMD, especially when natural organic matter (NOM) is present. To conduct an in-depth investigation on the formation and migration behavior of NOM, iron (Fe), Sb and NOM-Fe-Sb colloids in AMD, experiments were performed under simulated AMD conditions. The results demonstrate significant variations in the formation of NOM-Fe-Sb colloids (1-3-450 nm) as the molar ratio of carbon to iron (C/Fe) increases within acidic conditions (pH = 3). Increasing the C/Fe molar ratio from 0.1 to 1.2 resulted in a decrease in colloid formation but an increase in particulate fraction. The distribution of colloidal Sb, Sb(III), and Fe(III) within the NOM-Fe-Sb colloids decreased from 68 % to 55 %, 72 % to 57 %, and 68 % to 55 %, respectively. Their distribution in the particulate fraction increased from 28 % to 42 %, 21 % to 34 %, and 8 % to 27 %. XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS analyses demonstrated that NOM facilitates the formation and crystallization of Fe3O4 and FeSbO4 crystalline phases. The formation of the colloids depended on pH. Our results indicate that NOM-Fe-Sb colloids can form when the pH ≤ 4, and the proportion of colloidal Sb fraction within the NOM-Fe-Sb colloids increased from 9 % to a maximum of 73 %. Column experiments show that the concentration of NOM-Fe-Sb colloids reaches its peak and remains stable at approximately 3.5 pore volumes (PVs), facilitating the migration of Sb in the porous media. At pH ≥ 5, stable NOM-Fe-Sb colloids do not form, and the proportion of colloidal Sb fraction decreases from 7 % to 0 %. This implies that as pH increases, the electrostatic repulsion between colloidal particles weakens, resulting in a reduction in the colloidal fraction and an increase in the particulate fraction. At higher pH values (pH ≥ 5), the repulsive forces between colloidal particles nearly disappear, promoting particle aggregation. The findings of this study provide important scientific evidence for understanding the migration behavior of NOM-Fe-Sb colloids in AMD. As the pH gradually shifts from acidic to near-neutral pH during the remediation process of AMD, these results could be applied to develop new strategies for this purpose.

Increasing evidence implicates chronic inflammation as the main pathological cause of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Exploration of key targets in the inflammatory pathway may provide new treatment options for DN. We aimed to investigate the role of Src homology 2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (SHP2) in macrophages and its association with DN. The upregulated phosphorylation of SHP2 was detected in macrophages in both patients with diabetes and in a mouse model. Using macrophage-specific SHP2-knockout (SHP2-MKO) mice and SHP2fl/fl mice injected with streptozotocin (STZ), we showed that SHP2-MKO significantly attenuated renal dysfunction, collagen deposition, fibrosis, and inflammatory response in mice with STZ-induced diabetes. RNA-sequencing analysis using primary mouse peritoneal macrophages (MPMs) showed that SHP2 deletion mainly affected mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathways as well as MAPK/NF-κB-dependent inflammatory cytokine release in MPMs. Further study indicated that SHP2-deficient macrophages failed to release cytokines that induce phenotypic transition and fibrosis in renal cells. Administration with a pharmacological SHP2 inhibitor, SHP099, remarkably protected kidneys in both type 1 and type 2 diabetic mice. In conclusion, these results identify macrophage SHP2 as a new accelerator of DN and suggest that SHP2 inhibition may be a therapeutic option for patients with DN.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a challenging diabetic complication that manifests as chronic inflammation. Yet, the mechanism underlying diabetes-associated myocardial injury is not fully understood. We investigated the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of linderalactone, a natural compound that can prevent diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy in mice. Diabetes was induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (120 mg/kg, i.p.). Diabetic mice were administrated with linderalactone (2.5 or 5 mg/kg) by gavage for five weeks. Harvested heart tissues were then subjected to RNA-sequencing analysis to explore the potential mechanism of linderalactone. Linderalactone prevented heart dysfunction by inhibiting myocardial hypertrophy, fibrosis, and inflammation, without altering blood glucose. RNA-sequencing indicated that linderalactone exerted its cardioprotective effects mainly by affecting the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/ activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) pathway. Linderalactone also suppressed endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress mediated by the diabetes-activated MAPKs/ATF6 pathway, thereby reducing myocardial hypertrophy and inflammation in heart tissues and in cultured cardiomyocytes. Inhibition of MAPKs or a deficiency of ATF6 in cardiomyocytes mimicked the linderalactone-associated decreases in high glucose-induced hypertrophy and inflammation. Linderalactone showed beneficial effects in alleviating diabetic cardiomyopathy, in part by modulating the MAPK/ATF6 signaling pathway to mitigate myocardial hypertrophy and inflammation. Linderalactone may have clinical utility in the treatment for diabetes-associated cardiomyopathy.

The creation of anisotropic nanostructures with precise size control is desirable for new properties and functions, but it is challenging for ionic self-assembly (ISA) because of the non-directional electrostatic interactions. Herein, the formation of size-controllable tetragonal nanoprisms is reported via crystallization-directed ionic self-assembly (CDISA) through evaporating a micellar solution on solid substrates. First, ISA is designed with a crystalline polyethylene oxide (PEO) containing cationic polymer poly(2-(2-guanidinoethoxy)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(ethyleneoxide)-b-poly(2-(2-guanidinoethoxy)-ethylmethacrylate) (PGn -PEO230 -PGn ) and an anionic 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) to form micelles in aqueous solution. The PG segments binds excessive TPPS with amplenet chargeto form hydrophilic corona, while the PEO segments are unprecedentedly dehydrated and tightly packed into cores. Upon naturally drying the micellar solution on a silicon wafer, PEO crystallizationdirects the micelles to aggregate into square nanoplates, which are further connected to nanoprisms. Length and width of the nanoprisms can be facilely tuned by varying the initial concentration. In this hierarchical process, the aqueous self-assembly is prerequisite and the water evaporation rate is crucial for the formation of nanostructures, which provides multiple factors for morphology regulating. Such precise size-control strategy is highly expected to provide a new vision for the design of advanced materials with size controllable anisotropic nanostructures.

The effect of marine microalgae on the corrosion behavior of carbon steel (CS) still needs further investigation due to their dual roles. In this study, the corrosion behavior of Q235 CS specimens in f/2 medium with absence and presence of three classes of marine microalgae Synechococcus sp., Chlorella sp., and Thalassiosira sp. was investigated during a 16-day immersion period by the weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization curve, and surface analysis techniques. The biomass of the three microalgae was monitored at the same time. The results showed that the values of weight loss and corrosion current density decreased, and the values of charge transfer resistance increased in the CS specimens treated with these microalgae. On day 16, the inhibition efficiency of Thalassiosira sp. group was the highest (80.78%), followed by Chlorella sp. group (70.80%), and finally Synechococcus sp. group (69.38%). But the inhibition efficiency diminished with time. Furthermore, in these microalgal treatment groups, the passivation films were found to consist of a biofilm and a corrosion product film. This study revealed that the three microalgae can effectively strengthen the barrier of the CS specimens in the f/2 medium, leading to slow down their corrosion rates.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, farmer-assisted live streaming has become a hot topic in China. In this manuscript, we explore the ways in which broadcaster and platform characteristics jointly influence consumers' purchase intention. To examine our hypotheses, we distributed questionnaires to 261 Chinese consumers who viewed farmer-assisted live streaming. Correlational analyses, regression analyses, and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to examine our hypotheses. The results show that broadcasters' expertise is positively related to consumer trust and that platform reputation moderates this relationship. In addition, consumer trust mediates the positive relationship between broadcasters' expertise and consumer purchase intention. Furthermore, the theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

PURPOSE: Nonampullary duodenal adenocarcinoma (NADA) is a rare disease. Although several prognostic factors have been reported for this disease, they remain controversial due to their rarity. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed 54 cases of invasive NADA, focusing on the microsatellite instability (MSI) phenotype, programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, and prognostic factors. METHODS: Expression of the PD-L1 protein and cell differentiation markers in tumors was detected by immunohistochemistry. Microsatellite markers (NR-21, NR-22, NR-24, BAT-25, and BAT-26) were amplified for MSI assessment by PCR. RESULTS: The incidence of MSI in invasive NADA was 35.2%. No significant correlation between the MSI phenotype and clinicopathological factors was observed. Positive expression of PD-L1 by immune cells was common in advanced-stage disease (p = 0.054), and positive expression of PD-L1 in cancer cells correlated significantly with the histologically undifferentiated type (p = 0.016). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated a significantly better overall survival (OS) in patients with MSI (p = 0.013) and at early-stage disease (p = 0.000) than in those with microsatellite-stable or at late tumor stages. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that MSI (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.282, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.106-0.751, p = 0.011) and early tumor stage (stage I-II) (HR: 8.81, 95% CI: 2.545-30.500, p = 0.001) were independent better prognostic factors of OS. CONCLUSIONS: MSI and early tumor stage (stage I-II) were independent better prognostic factors of OS. A high proportion of MSI phenotypes and positive PD-L1 expression may be helpful for identifying immune checkpoint inhibitors as a novel therapeutic strategy.

Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland is a rare, well-differentiated gastric cancer entity, and very few patients transition to poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma during progression. Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland originates from the mucosa of the gastric fundic gland, usually without chronic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia. Histologically, the tumor cells are closely arranged to form anastomosing tubular glands, and more than 95% of tumor cells differentiate towards chief cells. Most gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland cases are characterized by submucosal involvement, but the tumor volume is usually small, with lymphatic and vascular invasion rarely observed. Therefore, endoscopic submucosal dissection can be an ideal treatment, leading to a favorable prognosis, and recurrence and metastasis of the disease are uncommon.

BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of coronary heart disease (CHD) in young patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS We included 972 CHD patients (≤50 years old) with coronary artery stenting who were prospectively enrolled and followed for 1 year. Clinical characteristics, risk factors, and predictors of outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS The prevalence of current smoker, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and positive family history of CHD were 18.9%, 34.3%, 14.5%, 4.4%, and 44.2%, respectively. Most of the patients underwent coronary stenting due to stable angina (48.8%) and unstable angina (UA; 48.1%). After 1-year follow-up, 64 patients (6.6%) experienced clinical outcomes and the most common event was UA (n=56). Compared to patients without clinical outcomes, those with outcomes were more likely to be male, have higher systolic blood pressure, more likely to have hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and more likely to be presented as unstable angina. Multivariate regression analysis showed only age (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.12 and 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.26), smoking (HR: 1.15 and 95% CI: 1.06-1.23), presence of hypertension (HR: 1.19 and 95% CI: 1.13-1.31), and diabetes mellitus (HR: 1.16 and 95% CI: 1.09-1.28), more vessels with stenosis (HR: 1.27 and 95% CI: 1.20-1.48) and presented with acute coronary syndrome (HR: 1.35 and 95% CI: 1.21-1.55) were independently associated with clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Most of the young (≤50 years of age) CHD patients had poor management of risk factors and better controlling these risk factors would be helpful for the primary and secondary prevention of premature CHD in Guangdong province.

Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the contaminants of concern in aquaculture ponds due to their frequent detection and high bioaccumulation in aquatic products and hence high dietary risks to human beings. In this study, magnetic activated carbon (MAC) was added as a stabilization and removal adsorbent to native pond sediment with known contamination of HMs and PAHs to reduce the tissue residues and dietary risks of HMs and PAHs in a model aquaculture species (Venerupis philippinarum) in the course of a 28-day bioaccumulation experiment. Meanwhile, passive sampling techniques based on diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were applied to sense the bioavailable fraction of HMs and PAHs in sediment during the stabilization process. The results showed that 3% dosage of MAC to sediment achieved the most cost-effective stabilization for HMs and PAHs. A remarkable decrease was observed with the tissue residues of HMs and PAHs in V. philippinarum (28-47% for HMs and ~76% for ∑PAHs), which was quantitatively linked to the decline in their bioavailable concentrations in sediment pore water (31-46% for HMs and ~76% for ∑PAHs). Consequently, the target hazard quotients (THQs) posed by HMs and incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) by PAHs in V. philippinarum were reduced by 38% and 46%, respectively. Along with the magnetic recovery of ~70% MAC from the sediment, HMs (4.8-13%) and PAHs (2-60%) can be effectively removed. We further established a multi-domain equilibrium sorption model that was able to predict the optimal amendment of MAC for quantitative mitigation of bioavailable PAHs in sediment pore water within a certain range of MAC dosage. Future studies are warranted to explore the applicability domain of MAC for in situ remediation in aquaculture ponds to ensure the quality of farming organisms or to serve other purposes in aquatic systems.

During the process of DNA replication, insertions or deletions of repeat sequences easily occur in microsatellites due to DNA polymerase slippage in instances of defective mismatch repair; this phenomenon is known as microsatellite instability. Based on genetic profiling, microsatellite instability gastric cancer is regarded as a separate subtype of gastric cancer that is associated with old age, the female sex, a distal gastric location, and a lower number of lymph node metastases. According to numerous retrospective studies, microsatellite instability is a favourable predictive marker for prognosis. However, during the perioperative period, gastric cancer patients with microsatellite instability after chemotherapy often exhibit a poor and unfavourable prognosis. This result still remains controversial. The efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in microsatellite instability-high tumours ranges from detrimental to beneficial effects. Due to the widespread expression of immune checkpoint molecules (such as programmed death-1 and programmed death-ligand 1) in tumours with microsatellite instability, immune checkpoint inhibitors have been utilized to treat microsatellite instability gastric cancer and tremendously improve the efficacy of treatment and survival of microsatellite instability patients. In this review, we attempt to outline the definitions of microsatellites and microsatellite instability, the methods used to screen for microsatellite instability, the clinical characteristics of microsatellite instability gastric cancer, and its responses to chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment. Overall, determining the status of microsatellites is essential before developing a tailored treatment strategy for patients with microsatellite instability gastric cancer.
