RESUMO

Helicobacter pylori encodes homologues of PilM, PilN and PilO from bacteria with Type IV pili, where these proteins form a pilus alignment complex. Inactivation of pilO changes H. pylori motility in semi-solid media, suggesting a link to the chemosensory pathways or flagellar motor. Here, we showed that mutation of the pilO or pilN gene in H. pylori strain SS1 reduced the mean linear swimming speed in liquid media, implicating PilO and PilN in the function, or regulation of, the flagellar motor. We also demonstrated that the soluble variants of H. pylori PilN and PilO share common biochemical properties with their Type IV pili counterparts which suggests their adapted function in the bacterial flagellar motor may be similar to that in the Type IV pili.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to explore the correlation between the different doses of remifentanil-based anaesthesia and postoperative pain in randomised trials. METHODS: The electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane, clinical trial registries, and Google Scholar were searched up to November 2022 for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the dose dependent efficacy of remifentanil for postoperative pain intensity and hyperalgesia. RESULTS: 31 studies involving 2019 patients were included for analysis. Compared with the high remifentanil dose administration, patients in low doses showed less postoperative pain intensity at 1-2 h (weighted mean differences (WMD): 0.60, 95% CI, 0.05 to 1.15), 3-8 h (WMD: 0.38, 95% CI, 0.00 to 0.75), 24 h (WMD: 0.26, 95% CI, 0.04 to 0.48) and 48 h (WMD: 0.32, 95% CI, 0.09 to 0.55). Remifentanil-free regimen failed to decrease the pain score at 24 h (WMD: 0.10, 95% CI, -0.10 to 0.30) and 48 h (WMD: 0.15, 95% CI, -0.22 to 0.52) in comparison with remifentanil-based anaesthesia. After excluding trials with high heterogeneity, the dose of the remifentanil regimen was closely correlated with the postoperative pain score (P=0.03). In addition, the dose of the remifentanil regimen was not associated with the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) (P=0.37). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis reveals that the low dose of remifentanil infusion is recommendable for general anaesthesia maintenance. No evidence suggests that remifentanil-free regimen has superiority in reducing postoperative pain. Moreover, remifentanil doesn't have a dose dependent effect in initiating PONV. Promoting the development of green finance (GF) is a critical way to address the environmental and developmental problems in China. While existing studies have examined the macroscopic role of GF, few pay attention to its impact on micro-enterprises. To investigate the effect of GF on micro-enterprises, this study considers green credit as a quasi-natural experiment to investigate the effect on firms' green total factor productivity (GTFP). We use the SBM-Malmquist method to measure firms' GTFP and adopt the double dual machine learning approach to explore its impact and potential mechanisms. The findings indicate that (1) the GF can effectively promote the GTFP at the firm level, which has been reconfirmed by robustness tests. (2) The GF can improve firms' GTFP through three pathways: promoting firms' green innovation, alleviating financing constraints, and strengthening managers' environmental concerns. (3). The heterogeneity analysis verifies that state-owned enterprises and large-size firms are more sensitive to the response of green finance. The results of this study lend support to the establishment of green finance and the formulation of corporate green development strategies.

As a non-destructive sensing technique, Raman spectroscopy is often combined with regression models for real-time detection of key components in microbial cultivation processes. However, achieving accurate model predictions often requires a large amount of offline measurement data for training, which is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. In order to overcome the limitations of traditional models that rely on large datasets and complex spectral preprocessing, in addition to the difficulty of training models with limited samples, we have explored a genetic algorithm-based semi-supervised convolutional neural network (GA-SCNN). GA-SCNN integrates unsupervised process spectral labeling, feature extraction, regression prediction, and transfer learning. Using only an extremely small number of offline samples of the target protein, this framework can accurately predict protein concentration, which represents a significant challenge for other models. The effectiveness of the framework has been validated in a system of Escherichia coli expressing recombinant ProA5M protein. By utilizing the labeling technique of this framework, the available dataset for glucose, lactate, ammonium ions, and optical density at 600 nm (OD600) has been expanded from 52 samples to 1302 samples. Furthermore, by introducing a small component of offline detection data for recombinant proteins into the OD600 model through transfer learning, a model for target protein detection has been retrained, providing a new direction for the development of associated models. Comparative analysis with traditional algorithms demonstrates that the GA-SCNN framework exhibits good adaptability when there is no complex spectral preprocessing. Cross-validation results confirm the robustness and high accuracy of the framework, with the predicted values of the model highly consistent with the offline measurement results.

Bacterial flagella and type IV pili (TFP) are surface appendages that enable motility and mechanosensing through distinct mechanisms. These structures were previously thought to have no components in common. Here, we report that TFP and some flagella share proteins PilO, PilN, and PilM, which we identified as part of the Helicobacter pylori flagellar motor. H. pylori mutants lacking PilO or PilN migrated better than wild type in semisolid agar because they continued swimming rather than aggregated into microcolonies, mimicking the TFP-regulated surface response. Like their TFP homologs, flagellar PilO/PilN heterodimers formed a peripheral cage that encircled the flagellar motor. These results indicate that PilO and PilN act similarly in flagella and TFP by differentially regulating motility and microcolony formation when bacteria encounter surfaces.

The bacterial flagellar motor is a molecular nanomachine, the assembly and regulation of which requires many accessory proteins. Their identity, structure and function are often discovered through characterisation of mutants with impaired motility. Here, we demonstrate the functional association of the Helicobacter pylori peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein (HpPal) with the flagellar motor by analysing the motility phenotype of the ∆pal mutant, and present the results of the preliminary X-ray crystallographic analysis of its globular C-terminal domain HpPal-C. Purified HpPal-C behaved as a dimer in solution. Crystals of HpPal-C were grown by the hanging drop vapour diffusion method using medium molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) Smear as the precipitating agent. The crystals belong to the primitive orthorhombic space group P1 with unit cell parameters a = 50.7, b = 63.0, c = 75.1 Å. X-ray diffraction data were collected to 1.8 Å resolution on the Australian Synchrotron beamline MX2. Calculation of the Matthews coefficient (VM=2.24 Å3/Da) and molecular replacement showed that the asymmetric unit contains two protein subunits. This study is an important step towards elucidation of the non-canonical role of H. pylori Pal in the regulation, or function of, the flagellar motor.

PURPOSE: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common in the lithotomy position after laparoscopic surgery. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) plays an important role in DVT prevention. However, few studies have compared the different compression areas of IPC application. It was hypothesized that the location of the compression sleeves could have an impact on the effects of thromboprophylaxis. METHODS: In this randomized, controlled trial performed from August 2020 to March 2021, 164 patients scheduled to undergo laparoscopic Dixon surgery were randomly assigned to one of four groups, based on the bilateral placement of compression sleeves during surgery: feet, calves, thighs, or control (no IPC). Both lower extremities were monitored for DVT on days 1 and 7 after surgery, using ultrasonographic assessment of mean blood velocity, blood flow volume, and diameter of the common femoral veins. Thrombosis-related hematologic analysis was performed. FINDINGS: On day 1 after surgery, IPC of the feet or calves was associated with a reduced prevalence of DVT compared with controls (both: P = 0.024; OR = 0.09; 95% CI, 0.01-0.72), while IPC of the thighs had no significant benefit (P = 0.781; OR = 0.86; 95% CI, 0.29-2.55). The prevalence of DVT in the left extremity was lower with IPC of the feet and calves compared with controls (both, P = 0.048). The mean blood velocity in the common femoral vein was significantly increased after surgery with IPC of the left and right feet (P = 0.006 and 0.007, respectively) and calves (P = 0.011 and P = 0.026, respectively) compared with controls. Similarly, the volume of blood flow in the left common femoral vein was greater with IPC of the feet and calves (P = 0.03 and 0.027, respectively). However, on day 7 after surgery, the between-group differences in the prevalences of DVT and hematologic indicators of thrombosis were not significant. IMPLICATIONS: On day 1 after surgery, IPC application at the feet or calves facilitated venous return and, hence, reduced the prevalence of DVT, especially in the left extremities. However, there were no significant differences in the prevalences of DVT or thrombosis-related hematologic indicators among the four groups on the day 7 after surgery. BACKGROUND: Freshwater sediment microbes are crucial decomposers that play a key role in regulating biogeochemical cycles and greenhouse gas emissions. They often exhibit a highly ordered structure along depth profiles. This stratification not only reflects redox effects but also provides valuable insights into historical transitions, as sediments serve as important archives for tracing environmental history. The Anthropocene, a candidate geological epoch, has recently garnered significant attention. However, the human impact on sediment zonation under the cover of natural redox niches remains poorly understood. Dam construction stands as one of the most far-reaching anthropogenic modifications of aquatic ecosystems. Here we attempted to identify the ecological imprint of damming on freshwater sediment microbiome. RESULTS: We conducted a year-round survey on the sediment profiles of Lake Chaohu, a large shallow lake in China. Through depth-discrete shotgun metagenomics, metataxonomics, and geophysiochemical analyses, we unveiled a unique prokaryotic hierarchy shaped by the interplay of redox regime and historical damming (labeled by the 137Cs peak in AD 1963). Dam-induced initial differentiation was further amplified by nitrogen and methane metabolism, forming an abrupt transition governing nitrate-methane metabolic interaction and gaseous methane sequestration depth. Using a random forest algorithm, we identified damming-sensitive taxa that possess distinctive metabolic strategies, including energy-saving mechanisms, unique motility behavior, and deep-environment preferences. Moreover, null model analysis showed that damming altered microbial community assembly, from a selection-oriented deterministic process above to a more stochastic, dispersal-limited one below. Temporal investigation unveiled the rapid transition zone as an ecotone, characterized by high species richness, low community stability, and emergent stochasticity. Path analysis revealed the observed emergent stochasticity primarily came from the high metabolic flexibility, which potentially contributed to both ecological and statistical neutralities. CONCLUSIONS: We delineate a picture in which dam-induced modifications in nutrient availability and sedimentation rates impact microbial metabolic activities and generate great changes in the community structure, assembly, and stability of the freshwater sediment microbiome. These findings reflect profound ecological and biogeochemical ramifications of human-Earth system interactions and help re-examine the mainstream views on the formation of sediment microbial stratification. Antibiotic residues in animal-derived food pose a risk to food safety and human health. Here, a smartphone-based pH-responsive 3-channel colorimetric biosensor is constructed for rapid detection of non-enzymatic multi-antibiotic residues in milk. In this system, a magnetic separation and enrichment approach is designed to specifically capture different antibiotic residues in complex environment. Indicators loaded on polydopamine-silver nanoparticles with excellently pH responsive visualization properties are utilized to ensure the high sensitivity of detection system. Moreover, smartphones are introduced to fulfill the demand for portable and on-site inspection of practical applications. It achieves simultaneous detection of oxytetracycline, kanamycin and streptomycin in the linear range of 1-105 pg/mL with detection limits of 0.085, 0.168, and 0.307 pg/mL, respectively. The practicality of the reported multi-antibiotic residues detection system is successfully demonstrated and evaluated challenging milk samples. Therefore, this system demonstrates the wide applications in multi-antibiotic residue analysis and food safety guarantee.

SARS-CoV-2, the pathogen of COVID-19, has introduced massive confirmed cases and millions of deaths worldwide, which poses a serious public health threat. For the early diagnosis of COVID-19, we have constructed an electrochemical biosensor-combined magnetic separation system with copper nanoflower-triggered cascade signal amplification strategy. In the proposed system, magnetic beads were utilized to fabricate the recognition element for capturing the conserved sequence of SARS-CoV-2. As the copper ions source, oligonucleotides modified copper nanoflowers with special layered structure provide numerous catalysts for click chemistry reaction. When target sequence RdRP_SARSr-P2 appears, copper nanoflowers will be bound with magnetic beads, thus prompting the Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction through the connection of the SARS-CoV-2 conserved sequence. Then, a large number of signal molecules FMMA can be grafted onto the modified electrode surface by electrochemically mediated atom-transfer radical polymerization to amplify the signal for the quantitative analysis of SARS-CoV-2. Under optimal conditions, a linear range from 0.1 to 103 nM with a detection limit of 33.83 pM is obtained. It provides a powerful tool for the diagnosis of COVID-19, which further benefits the early monitoring of other explosive infectious diseases effectively, thus guaranteeing public health safety.

Polyethylene (PE) exists widely in many habitats as a persistent organic pollution and poses a major threat to the ecological environment. In this study, bacterial communities in freshwater lake sediments were exposed to culture media using PE films as the sole carbon source in aerobic and anaerobic microculture environments, and they were able to adhere and adapt to the PE films for a longer period of time. The results demonstrated that the pH value of the medium in the two cultural conditions was distinct, as were the rates of films weight loss and surface functional group alterations. We also concluded the certain bacterial genera from freshwater lake sediments who may be able to degrade PE films under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Simultaneously, the dominating bacterial communities between the medium and the film differed significantly under two cultural settings, as did the community composition, while metabolism was the primary function.

BACKGROUND: Mask ventilation during anaesthesia induction is generally used to provide adequate oxygenation but improper mask ventilation can result in gastric insufflation. It has been reported that oxygen administered by transnasal humidified rapid-insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) during anaesthesia induction can maintain oxygenation but its effect on gastric insufflation is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate whether THRIVE provided adequate oxygenation without gastric insufflation. The secondary aim was to explore the change in cross-sectional area of the antrum (CSAa) during anaesthesia induction. Other potential risk factors of gastric insufflation were also explored. DESIGN: A prospective, randomised, double-blind study. SETTING: Single centre, Department of Anaesthesiology, 1 st Affiliated Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, China, from May 2022 to September 2022. PATIENTS: A total of 210 patients (age >18 years, ASA classification I to III) scheduled to undergo general anaesthesia were enrolled. INTERVENTIONS: For induction of general anaesthesia, patients were randomised into two groups: THRIVE and pressure-controlled facemask ventilation (PCFV). The THRIVE group received high-flow nasal oxygen with no additional ventilation. The PCFV group had pressure-controlled positive pressure ventilation from the anaesthesia machine via a tight fitting facemask. Gastric insufflation was detected using real-time ultrasonography. The CSAa was measured from ultrasonography images obtained before anaesthesia induction and at 0, 1, 2 and 3 min after loss of consciousness. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The incidence of gastric insufflation during the period from loss of consciousness until intubation. RESULTS: The THRIVE group had a lower incidence of gastric insufflation during anaesthesia induction than the PCFV group (13.0 vs. 35.3%, odds ratio (OR) = 0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.14 to 0.56, P  < 0.001). Increase in the CSA after anaesthesia induction was significantly correlated with gastric insufflation (OR = 5.35, 95% CI, 2.90 to 9.89, P  < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that advancing age (OR = 1.04, 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.07), obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OR = 2.43, 95% CI, 1.24 to 4.76), higher Mallampati score (OR = 2.66, 95% CI, 1.21 to 5.85) and PCFV (OR = 4.78, 95% CI, 2.06 to 11.06) were important independent risk factors for gastric insufflation. CONCLUSION: During anaesthesia induction, the THRIVE technique provided adequate oxygenation with a reduced incidence of gastric insufflation. PCFV, advancing age, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and the Mallampati score were found to be independent risk factors for gastric insufflation during anaesthesia induction. The formation of black and odorous water is a complex process influenced by various factors such as organic matter and environmental conditions. However, there are limited studies on the role of microorganisms in water and sediment during the blackening and odorization process. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of black and odorous water formation by simulating organic carbon-driven black and odorous water through indoor experiments. The study revealed that the water turned black and odorous when DOC reached 50 mg/L and the microbial community structure in the water changed significantly during this process, with the relative abundance of Desulfobacterota increasing significantly and Desulfovibrio being the main dominant genus in Desulfobacterota. Additionally, we observed a notable decrease in the α-diversity of the microbial community in water and a considerable increase in microbial function of sulfur compounds respiration in water. In contrast, the sediment microbial community changed slightly, and the main functions of the sediment microbial community remained unchanged. The partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) suggested that organic carbon will drive the blackening and odorization process by affecting DO levels and microbial community structure and that the contribution of Desulfobacterota in water to the formation of black and odorous water was higher than that in sediment. Overall, our study provides insights into the characteristics of black and odorous water formation and suggests potential ways to prevent its formation by controlling DOC and inhibiting the growth of Desulfobacterota in water bodies.

Sediment microbes are crucial for maintaining biogeochemical cycles in aquatic ecosystems, yet the influence of sediment geophysical structure on microbial communities remains unclear. In this study, we collected sediment cores from a nascent reservoir in its initial stage of deposition and utilized the multifractal model to comprehensively characterize the heterogeneity of sediment grain size and pore space. Our results demonstrate that both environmental physiochemistry and microbial community structures varied significantly with depth, with the grain size distribution (GSD) being the key driver of sediment microbial diversity, as revealed by the partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) method. GSD can potentially impact microbial communities and biomass by controlling pore space and organic matter. Overall, this study represents the first attempt to apply soil multifractal models into the integrated description of physical structure in sediment. Our findings provide valuable insights into the vertical distribution of microbial communities.

OBJECTIVE: To assess sarcoma margins with more accuracy and aid surgical planning, we constructed three-dimensional (3D) digital models with computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image fusion data and validated the preciseness of the models by comparing them with 3D models constructed with CT only data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive set of patients treated in our center who were preoperatively evaluated with the fusion image model. Models based on fusion images or CT-only data were constructed. Volumes of both tumors were calculated and the tumors were overlapped to see the location of differences between the two models. RESULTS: A consecutive 12 cases (4 male vs. 8 female) were included in this study. Most of the tumors were located in the pelvic bone or spine. The volume of the two tumor models was different and the differences were mainly in the peripheral region of the tumor. CONCLUSION: CT and MRI fusion image 3D models are more accurate than models with CT-only data and can be very helpful in preoperative planning of sarcoma patients.

PURPOSE: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is a common complaint following thyroidectomy. Dexamethasone was reported to alleviate POST when administered via different routes. This study aimed to compare the effects of local spray and perineural injection surrounding the internal branch of superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN) in preventing POST and alleviating postoperative impaired voice function. METHODS: A randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial was performed to test the efficacy of the iSLN block in inhibiting of POST. A total of 161 patients who underwent elective thyroidectomy were randomly allocated to two groups. Group Spray: 4 mg dexamethasone was sprayed on to the vocal cord; Group iSLN: bilateral perineural injection with 4 mg dexamethasone around the iSLN. The incidence and severity of POST, swallowing pain, and its side effects were evaluated. Postoperative acoustic analysis, including jitter and shimmer, was also performed. RESULTS: Group iSLN exhibited a significantly less incidence and intensity of POST at 6 h and 24 h (P < 0.001). The patients experienced less swallowing pain at 6 h (P < 0.001) after the surgery, compared with Group Spray. When compared with Group Spray, Group iSLN improved postoperative voice function, which was characterized by lower jitter and lower shimmer value at 6 h and 24 h (P < 0.001) after the surgery. The severity of postoperative cough is higher in Group Spray (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients undergoing elective thyroidectomy, those who received perineural injection surrounding iSLN with dexamethasone had improved voice function and presented with more excellence in the inhibition of POST and cough, in comparison with the local spray. GABAergic system disinhibition played an important role in the pathogenesis of remifentanil-induced hyperalgesia (RIH). K+-Cl--cotransporter-2 (KCC2) has the potential to enhance the strength of GABAergic signaling function. However, few reports have focused on the additive analgesic effect of KCC2 enhancer and GABAA receptor agonist on the spinal dorsal horn. Therefore, we evaluated the role of GABA type A receptor (GABAAR) agonist (muscimol), KCC2 enhancer (CLP257) in remifentanil-induced hyperalgesia, as well as GABA and KCC2 receptors responses in the dorsal spinal horn. Remifentanil started to reduce paw withdrawal mechanical thresholds at postoperative 4 h and lasted to 72 h. The RIH associated decreases in spinal GABA release was transient. The amount of spinal GABA transmitter by microdialysis was observed to be decreased at the beginning and reached bottom at 150 min, then returned to the baseline level at 330 min. The synthesis and transportation of GABA transmitter were inhibited, characterized as spinal GAD67 and GAT1 downregulation after the establishment of RIH model. The effect of RIH on GABA receptor downregulation was linked to the reduced expression of spinal KCC2 receptor. This decrease in KCC2 expression has coincided with an early loss of GABA inhibition. KCC2 enhancer, which is reported to lead to a reduction in intracellular Cl-, can enhance GABA-mediated inhibitory function. Both muscimol and CLP257 could dose-dependently inhibit mechanical hypersensitivity caused by remifentanil-induced downregulation of GABAAα2R and KCC2, respectively. Compared with muscimol acting alone, the joint action of CLP257 and muscimol showed a higher pain threshold and less c-fos expression via upregulation of KCC2 and GABAAα2R. Taken together, these findings suggested that the RIH was initiated by decreased GABA release. Downregulation of GABAAα2R and KCC2 receptor contributed to spinally mediated hyperalgesia in RIH. KCC2 enhancer was proved to potentiate antinociceptive effect of GABAAR agonist in RIH.

Sediments cover a majority of Earth's surface and are essential for global biogeochemical cycles. The effects of sediment physiochemical features on microbial community structures have attracted attention in recent years. However, the question of whether the interstitial space has significant effects on microbial community structures in submerged sediments remains unclear. In this study, based on identified OTUs (operational taxonomic units), correlation analysis, RDA analysis, and Permanova analysis were applied into investigating the effects of interstitial space volume, interstitial gas space, volumetric water content, sediment particle features (average size and evenness), and sediment depth on microbial community structures in different sedimentation areas of Chaohu Lake (Anhui Province, China). Our results indicated that sediment depth was the closest one to the main environmental gradient. The destruction effects of gas space on sediment structures can physically affect the similarity of the whole microbial community in all layers in river dominated sedimentation area (where methane emits actively). However, including gas space, none of the five interstitial space parameters were significant with accounting for the microbial community structures in a sediment layer. Thus, except for the happening of active physical destruction on sediment structures (for example, methane ebullition), sediment interstitial space parameters were ineffective for affecting microbial community structures in all sedimentation areas.

In this study, the sorption behaviors and mechanisms between polystyrene microplastics (micro-PS) and 4-rings polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pyrene (Pyr) and its derivatives (S-Pyr), including 1-methylpyrene (P-CH3), 1-hydroxypyrene (P-OH), 1-aminopyrene (P-NH2), 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid (P-COOH) were investigated at neutrality. The results revealed that the sorption rates of micro-PS for S-Pyr were higher than those for parent Pyr. Meanwhile, -CH3 could slightly facilitate the sorption, whereas -OH, P-NH2, and P-COOH intensively inhibit the sorption of S-Pyr onto micro-PS. The sorption capacities of Pyr/S-Pyr increased with decreasing size of micro-PS. Besides, the effects of salinity and temperature on the sorption characteristics of micro-PS for Pyr/S-Pyr depended on their substituents. Combined with experimental and computational methods, it could be concluded that the main sorption mechanisms were possibly hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction and pore-filling. The observations reported here could improve predictions of environmental behaviors and bioavailability of PAHs and micro-PS.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from macroalgae is regarded a crucial source of autochthonous DOM in coastal ocean. In the present study, the characteristics of DOM from the macroalgae Ulva pertusa decomposition (U. pertusa-DOM) and its binding behaviors with Cu(II) using multiple spectroscopic techniques and chemometric analyses. The labile U. pertusa-DOM could be consumed and transformed by microorganisms. The absorption spectroscopic descriptors indicate that the hydrophobicity, aromaticity, and molecular weight of the U. pertusa-DOM increase during the 27-day incubation period. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis suggests that the relative abundance of the protein-like component (C1) (96.10-84.96%) sequentially decreases, whereas the humic-like components (C2) (2.16-9.73%) and (C3) (1.75-5.31%) in the U. pertusa-DOM increase with the U. pertusa decomposition. The Cu(II) binding properties of the U. pertusa-DOM are dependent on the decomposition time. The order of the conditional stability constant (logKM) is C2 > C1 > C3. The complexation capacity (f) of C1 is higher than those of C2 and C3 at a specific time. Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy reveals that the microbial degradation could accelerate the Cu(II) binding to humic-like fractions in the U. pertusa-DOM. These findings will help us better understand the biogeochemical behaviors of macroalgal DOM and heavy metal in coastal ecosystems.
