RESUMO

Core-only InAs nanowires (NWs) remain of continuing interest for application in modern optical and electrical devices. In this paper, we utilize the II-VI semiconductor CdSe as a shell for III-V InAs NWs to protect the electron transport channel in the InAs core from surface effects. This unique material configuration offers both a small lattice mismatch between InAs and CdSe and a pronounced electronic confinement in the core with type-I band alignment at the interface between both materials. Under optimized growth conditions, a smooth interface between the core and shell is obtained. Atom probe tomography (APT) measurements confirm substantial diffusion of In into the shell, forming a remote n-type doping of CdSe. Moreover, field-effect transistors (FETs) are fabricated, and the electron transport characteristics in these devices is investigated. Finally, band structure simulations are performed and confirm the presence of an electron transport channel in the InAs core that, at higher gate voltages, extends into the CdSe shell region. These results provide a promising basis toward the application of hybrid III-V/II-VI core/shell nanowires in modern electronics.

RESUMO

We present low-temperature magnetotransport measurements on selectively grown Sb2Te3-based topological insulator ring structures. These devices display clear Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the conductance originating from phase-coherent transport around the ring. The temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude indicates that the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations originate from ballistic transport along the ring arms. We attribute these oscillations to the topological surface states. Further insight into the phase coherence is gained by comparing with similar Aharonov-Bohm-type oscillations in topological insulator nanoribbons exposed to an axial magnetic field. Here, quasi-ballistic phase-coherent transport is confirmed for closed-loop topological surface states in the transverse direction enclosing the nanoribbon. In contrast, the appearance of universal conductance fluctuations indicates phase-coherent transport in the diffusive regime, which is attributed to bulk carrier transport. Thus, it appears that even in the presence of diffusive p-type charge carriers in Aharonov-Bohm ring structures, phase-coherent quasi-ballistic transport of topological surface states is maintained over long distances.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the isolated and combined effects of caffeine and citrulline malate (CitMal) on jumping performance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and pain perception in resistance-trained participants. METHODS: Using a randomized and double-blind study design, 35 resistance-trained males (n = 18) and females (n = 17) completed four testing sessions following the ingestion of isolated caffeine (5 mg/kg), isolated CitMal (12 g), combined doses of caffeine and CitMal, and placebo. Supplements were ingested 60 min before performing a countermovement jump (CMJ) test (outcomes included jump height, rate of force development, peak force, and peak power), one-repetition maximum (1RM) squat and bench press, and repetitions to muscular failure in the squat and bench press with 60% of 1RM. Pain perception was evaluated following the repetitions to failure tests. The study was registered at ISRCTN (registration number: ISRCTN11694009). RESULTS: Compared to the placebo condition, isolated caffeine ingestion and co-ingestion of caffeine and CitMal significantly enhanced strength in 1RM bench press (Cohen's d: 0.05-0.06; 2.5-2.7%), muscular endurance in the squat (d: 0.46-0.58; 18.6-18.7%) and bench press (d: 0.48-0.64; 9.3-9.5%). However, there was no significant difference between isolated caffeine ingestion and caffeine co-ingested with CitMal, and isolated CitMal supplementation did not have an ergogenic effect in any outcome. No main effect of condition was found in the analysis for CMJ-derived variables, 1RM squat and pain perception. CONCLUSION: Caffeine ingestion appears to be ergogenic for muscular strength and muscular endurance, while adding CitMal does not seem to further enhance these effects.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to validate the blood pressure (BP) measurement device Erkameter 125 PRO according to the International Protocol revision 2010 of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH-IP2). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 33 patients aged 32-79 years, BP measurements were performed alternately using the Erkameter 125 PRO and the reference mercury sphygmomanometer according to ESH-IP revision 2010. For the analysis, a total of 99 comparisons were included. RESULTS: All absolute differences between the test device and the reference were within 10 mmHg for systolic blood pressure (SBP), and all except one for diastolic blood pressure (DBP). A total of 93 out of 99 comparisons for SBP showed an absolute difference within 5 mmHg and 92 out of 99 for DBP. The mean±SD difference between the Erkameter 125 PRO and the standard reference was -0.5±3.5 mmHg for SBP and 0.5±3.5 mmHg for DBP. As to part 2 of ESH-IP 2010, all patients had a minimum of two out of three measurements within 5 mmHg difference for SBP and 31 out of 33 patients for DBP. CONCLUSION: The Erkameter 125 PRO fulfilled the requirements of parts 1 and 2 of the ESH-IP revision 2010 and can be recommended for office BP measurements in adults.
