RESUMO

The objectives of this systematic review were to estimate the prevalence of depression and to identify the relationship between depression and quality of life (QOL) among high school and university students. Literature search was performed in the Scopus, Embase, PubMed, Scielo, CINAHL and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA methodology. The results were presented through descriptive approaches and meta-analysis. Thirty-six studies met the eligibility criteria, and twenty-six were included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 27% (95% CI 0.21-0.33) among students, being high school and university students was 25% (95% CI 0.14-0.37) and 27% (95% CI 0.20-0.34), respectively, and most studies have shown that depression was associated with low QOL. Among the limitations of the study is the difficulty of generalizing the results found, considering the large sample of health students. New studies should be conducted considering the severity, duration, and patterns of depressive symptoms in high school and university students, to better understand the relationship between depression and QOL.

OBJECTIVES: Increased Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) has been associated with improvement of cognitive function in response to exercise. Evidences indicate a role for IGF-1 in beta-amyloid clearance and reducing hyperphosphorylation tau in Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is a need to investigate the IGF-1 response to exercise in AD patients due to well-known potential effects of exercise on IGF-1. The aim of this study was to examine circulating IGF-1 levels in AD patients and older adults without dementia after acute exercise and to verify the associations among cardiorespiratory fitness, cognition and IGF-1 levels. METHOD: Seventy-four older adults (40 older adults without dementia and 34 AD patients) participated in this study. The outcomes included IGF-1 plasma levels and performance in the submaximal exercise stress test. Secondary outcomes included cognitive functions, depressive symptoms, level of physical activity, insulin-resistance, and cholesterol. All participants performed the incremental test on a treadmill and IGF-1 was collected before and after the exercise. RESULTS: A tendency to the difference of baseline IGF-1 plasma levels between the groups was found. After the acute exercise AD patients also presented higher levels of circulating IGF-1 compared to the Older adults without dementia. Correlations among cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive functions were found. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that AD patients and older adults respond differently to acute exercise in terms of circulating IGF-1 levels. This response seems to indicate either an IGF-1 resistance or a compensatory exercise-induced to lower IGF-1 levels in AD patients. Cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with global cognition, executive function, attention and information processing speed.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive degenerative disorder that negatively affects quality of life of patients and family members. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the cognition, level of physical activity and functioning of elderly individuals with mild AD and those without dementia. METHODS: The study comprised 24 elderly with mild AD (mean age = 76.9 ± 5.3 years) and 30 elderly without dementia (mean age = 74.1 ± 5.6 years). The following instruments were applied to evaluate cognitive functions: MMSE; Frontal Assessment Battery; Clock Drawing Test; Corsi Blocks, and Verbal Paired Associates. Event-related potential P300 was used to evaluate cognitive processing. The Modified Baecke Questionnaire For Older Adults was applied to evaluate the level of physical activity together with use of a pedometer for 7 consecutive days. For the evaluation of the functioning, the Direct Assessment of Functional Status-Revised scale and functional tests were used. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the groups in level of physical activity and functioning, except on the test evaluating flexibility. CONCLUSION: Elderly with AD had cognitive, functional and physical activity deficits which can manifest even in the early stages of the disease.


A doença de Alzheimer é um processo neurodegenerativo e progressivo que afeta, negativamente, a qualidade de vida do paciente e de seus familiares. OBJETIVO: Comparar a cognição, nível de atividade física capacidade funcional de idosos no estágio leve da doença de Alzheimer e de idosos sem demência. MÉTODOS: Participaram deste estudo 24 idosos no estágio leve da doença de Alzheimer (média de idade = 76,9 ± 5.3 anos) e 30 idosos sem demência (média de idade = 74,1 ± 5,6 anos). Foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos de avaliação cognitiva: MEEM, Bateria de Avaliação Frontal, Teste do Desenho do Relógio, Blocos de Corsi e Pares Verbais Associados. Além disso, foi realizado o exame eletroencefalográfico P300 para avaliar o tempo de processamento de informação. Para quantificar o nível de atividade física foi utilizado o Questionário Baecke Modificado para Idosos e o pedômetro, que foi utilizado por 7 dias consecutivos. A funcionalidade foi avaliada através da escala Direct Assessment of Functional Status-Revised, juntamente com testes funcionais que avaliaram os componentes da capacidade funcional. RESULTADOS: Foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os grupos para o nível de atividade física e funcionalidade motora, com exceção da avaliação da flexibilidade. CONCLUSÃO: Idosos com doença de Alzheimer apresentam prejuízos cognitivos, funcionais e de nível de atividade física, os quais encontram-se alterados nos estágios iniciais da doença.
