RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of large apical preparations with Reciproc (REC), Hyflex CM (HCM) and Twisted File Adaptive (TFA) systems using micro-computed tomography (MCT). Ninety mesiobuccal (MB) and distobuccal (DB) root canals of maxillary molars (n = 45) were scanned using MCT before and after the shaping procedures. The root canals (n = 15) were prepared until REC 40.06, HCM 40.04 and TFA 35.04. The root canal transportation (RCT), centring ability (CA), change in volume of the root canal and at different levels (VC), remaining dentine thickness (RDT), removal of dentine wall (RDW) and working time (WT) were evaluated. Data were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests, and the one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests with a level of significance set at 5%. No significant difference among the instruments was found regarding the RCT, CA, RDT, RDW and WT (P > 0.05), in larger apical preparations in curved MB and straight DB canals of maxillary molars.

UNLABELLED: The light-curing technique is relevant to reduce the degree of polymerization shrinkage, improving clinical and esthetic success of composite resin restorations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in vitro the effect of four light-curing techniques on depth of cure of a composite resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten specimens of a composite resin were made in cylindrical cavities prepared in PVC plates (3.0 X 7.0 mm) for each light-curing technique. Four photoactivation methods were investigated: stepped, ramped, pulse-delay and traditional. Specimens were longitudinally sectioned and polished for microhardness measurements (kg/mm(2)), which were made at 0.1, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mm from the irradiated surface. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: The effect of factors studied (curing method and distance from the surface) and the interaction of these factors was statistically significant (p<0.05). The traditional method of cure provided higher microhardness values (69.6 +/- 2.5) than the stepped (63.5 +/- 3.1) and pulsed (63.9 +/- 3.2) methods at all depths evaluated, but it did not differ from the ramped method (66.7+/- 4.4) at 0.1 and 1.0 mm of depth. CONCLUSION: All techniques employed provided satisfactory cure of the composite resin up to the depth of 2.0 mm from the irradiated surface.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of AH Plus, Epiphany, Acroseal, Endofill, and Polifil after active lateral condensation technique, by using a bacterial test, during 64 days. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred bovine incisors were cleaned and shaped; then they were filled with the endodontic sealers and adapted into a microcentrifuge tube. The setup root/microcentrifuge tube was added to glass flasks containing Brain Heart Infusion broth. A culture of Enterococcus faecalis was inserted into the upper chamber of each assembly. Daily leakage was evaluated through the broth turbidity. RESULTS: The results were submitted to statistical analysis (Kaplan-Meier method, Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests). CONCLUSIONS: AH Plus and Endofill had the worst sealing ability when compared with Polifil, which showed the least leakage. Acroseal and Epiphany showed a tendency toward having an intermediate behavior; however, there was no significant difference among Acroseal, Epiphany, and the other sealers.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare the influence of preflaring on the accuracy of 4 electronic apex locators (EALs): Root ZX, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator, Mini Apex Locator, and Apex DSP. METHODS: Forty extracted teeth were preflared by using S1 and SX ProTaper instruments. The working length was established by reducing 1mm from the total length (TL). The ability of the EALs to detect precise (-1mm from TL) and acceptable (-1+/-0.5 mm from TL) measurements in unflared and preflared canals was determined. RESULTS: The precise and acceptable (P/A) readings in unflared canals for Root ZX, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator, Mini Apex, and Apex DSP were 50%/97.5%, 47.5%/95%, 50%/97.5%, and 45%/ 67.5%, respectively. For preflared canals, the readings were 75%/97.5%, 55%/95%, 75%/97.5%, and 60%/87.5%, respectively. For precise criteria, the preflared procedure increased the percentage of accurate electronic readings for the Root ZX and the Mini Apex Locator (P < .05). For acceptable criteria, no differences were found among Root ZX, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator, and Mini Apex Locator (P > .05). Fisher test indicated the lower accuracy for Apex DSP (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The Root ZX and the Mini Apex Locator devices increased significantly the precision to determine the real working length after the preflaring procedure. All the EALs showed an acceptable determination of the working length between the ranges of+/-0.5mm except for the Apex DSP device, which had the lowest accuracy.
