RESUMO

A hybrid operating room is a space that meets all the stringent requirements of an operating room harbouring the facilities of an interventional radiology or cardiology room. This technical innovation facilitates complex endovascular and hybrid operations in a sterile environment. The high-end imaging technique with the ability to perform three-dimensional reconstructions will lead to improved quality of endovascular operations. Moreover, this technique enables physicians to explore and extend the boundaries not only of cardiovascular but also of navigated minimally invasive surgical techniques.

RESUMO

Early accurate determination of burn depth is important to determine the optimal treatment of burns. The method most used to determine burn depth is clinical assessment. This is a cheap method, but not the most accurate. Laser Doppler imaging (LDI) is a technique with which a more accurate (>95%) estimate of burn depth can be made by measuring the dermal perfusion. It is hypothesised that the introduction of LDI will lead to quicker decisions as to whether or not to operate, possibly leading to a shorter length of hospital stay and lower medical costs. To test this hypothesis, a multicentre randomized controlled trial is presently being conducted in the Dutch burn centres.

RESUMO

We present three patients, a 55-year-old man, a 69-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, with a seatbelt sign following a car accident. All 3 patients exhibited various injuries that may occur in the case of a blunt trauma, for example rib fractures. In one patient, however, symptoms of internal abdominal injury occurred several days after the accident. The presence of a seatbelt sign is associated with an increased risk of internal abdominal injury. We therefore advise a CT scan of the abdomen in patients who present with a seatbelt sign, even if abdominal ultrasound does not reveal signs of injury.
