PURPOSE: To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and perirenal fat stranding (PRFS), which is defined as linear or curvilinear soft tissue densities in the perirenal fat on computed tomography (CT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Adults who had abdominal CT for health screening at a single institution between October 2022 and March 2023 were included retrospectively. Two radiologists assessed the extent of PRFS for each CT and graded it as absent, mild/moderate, and severe. Logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the associations between PRFS and metabolic syndrome-related factors, as well as age and gender. RESULTS: Among 701 participants (mean age, 56.8 years ± 9.7; 336 women and 365 men), 87 (12.4%) had mild (n = 80) or moderate (n = 7) PRFS. None had severe PRFS. The presence of PRFS was independently associated with higher body mass index (odds ratio [OR], 2.561 and 9.842 for overweight and obese, respectively; p ≤ 0.001), elevated blood pressure with or without anti-hypertensive medication (OR, 2.232; p = 0.015), anti-diabetic medication (OR, 3.129; p < 0.001), and lipid-lowering medication (OR, 1.919; p = 0.019), older age (OR, 4.545 and 9.109 for 50-59 years and ≥ 60 years, respectively; p ≤ 0.002), and male gender (OR, 10.065; p < 0.001). Sixty three of 87 (72.4%) participants with PRFS had metabolic syndrome, while 265 of 614 (43.2%) participants without PRFS did (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Incidental mild or moderate PRFS may be associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome or related disorders in otherwise healthy adults.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has complex effects on bone health, and dual-energy spectral computed tomography (CT) has become increasingly valuable for bone quantification. However, the relationship between bone base material pairs (BMPs) and abdominal fat volume in patients with MetS remains underexplored. This study thus aimed to analyze the relationship between abdominal fat volume and various bone BMPs using dual-energy spectral CT in young and middle-aged patients with MetS. Methods: Patients with MetS who underwent sleeve gastrectomy at the Center of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases, Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, from June to November 2021 were retrospectively collected. The abdominal fat measurements and BMPs were acquired using dual-energy spectral CT imaging. These included the volumes of total abdominal fat (TAF), abdominal visceral fat (AVF), and abdominal subcutaneous fat (ASF), as well as bone densities based on hydroxyapatite (water), i.e., HAP (water), and calcium (water), i.e., Ca (water), BMPs. After grouping the patients by sex, we analyzed the differences in clinical and imaging features. The correlation between the clinical and imaging parameters of patients with MetS was evaluated with Pearson correlation coefficients. Age- and sex-adjusted partial correlation analysis between fat volume and bone BMPs was conducted for patients of different sexes. Additionally, multiple linear regression analyses were performed with age, sex, and TAF volume as the independent variables and with Ca (water) and HAP (water) as dependent variables. Results: A total of 112 young and middle-aged patients with MetS were included in this study, including 85 females and 27 males. Compared to male patients with MetS, the females with MetS exhibited higher lumbar Ca (water) and HAP (water) BMPs, with lower volumes of TAF and AVF and a smaller abdominal circumference (P<0.01). The volumes of TAF, AVF, and ASF were negatively correlated with the average Ca (water) and HAP (water) BMPs in the first to third lumbar vertebrae (L1-L3) (P<0.05). Ca (water) and HAP (water) BMPs decreased with age and increasing TAF volume (P<0.001). The fitted equations for the relationship between bone BMPs with age, sex, and TAF volume were as follows: (I) bone Ca (water) BMP = 76.469 - 0.500 age + 6.762 sex - 0.002 TAF volume; (II) bone HAP (water) BMP =171.704 - 1.138 age + 11.825 sex - 0.004 TAF volume. Conclusions: In young and middle-aged patients with MetS, the abdominal fat volume was negatively correlated with lumbar bone Ca (water) and HAP (water) BMPs, implying that increased abdominal fat volume may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of osteopenia among those with MetS. The reduction of bone Ca (water) and HAP (water) with high abdominal fat volume may hold clinical significance for fracture risk in individuals with MetS.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the predictive value of abdominal fat characteristics measured by computed tomography (CT) in identifying early recurrence within one year post-initial transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) in patients with nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). A predictive model integrating fat features and clinical factors was developed to guide individualized treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 203 NMIBC patients from two medical centers was conducted. Abdominal CT images were analyzed using 3D Slicer software. Spearman correlation, logistic regression, and the Lasso algorithm were employed for data analysis. Predictive efficacy was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and decision curve analysis (DCA). Calibration was evaluated using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. RESULTS: Significant differences in abdominal fat characteristics were found between the recurrence and nonrecurrence groups. All fat features positively correlated with body mass index (BMI), with bilateral perirenal fat thickness (PrFT) showing superior predictive performance. Multivariate logistic regression identified independent predictors of early recurrence, including tumor number, early perfusion chemotherapy, left and right PrFT, and visceral fat area (VFA) at umbilical and renal hilum levels. The Lasso-based model achieved an AUC of 0.904, outperforming existing models. CONCLUSION: Abdominal fat characteristics, especially bilateral PrFT, strongly correlate with early recurrence in NMIBC. The Lasso-based model, integrating fat and clinical factors, offers superior predictive efficacy and could improve individualized treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Body condition score (BCS) is a subjective tool and the deposition of subcutaneous fat differs from the deposition of abdominal fat. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate by multivariate regression models and ultrasonography the amount of fat accumulated in different areas of the abdominal cavity in Jersey non-pregnant non-lactating cows and its association with their BCS. METHODS: From a commercial farm, 21 non-pregnant non-lactating Jersey cows were selected at random. Cows were placed in a headlock line, and BCS was evaluated (scale 1-5 with a 0.25 unit increment) by the same assessor. Ultrasonographic evaluation was performed using a Sonosite machine in duplicate, considering key anatomical points of the body to predict total abdominal fat (AT), retroperitoneal fat (RT), omental fat (OT) and mesenteric fat (MT). A regression analysis for each abdominal fat depot and the BCS was run using SAS. RESULTS: Models from the lowest to the largest r2 are reported. The r2 for the models were MT r2 = 0.023; RT r2 = 0.1047; OT r2 = 0.323 and AT r2 = 0.369. Correlation between BCS and abdominal fat depots was positive, lower for mesenteric and retroperitoneal fat, but higher for omental and total abdominal fat. Cows were divided on the basis of the median of BCS distribution to high (≥3.5) and low (≤3.25). Those with high BCS had significantly larger amounts of fat in different anatomical areas of abdominal cavity than cows with low BCS. CONCLUSION: BCS has a low-to-moderate association with abdominal fat depots, but a high variability exists within each BCS punctuation, which supports the notion that fat accumulation patterns and metabolic turnover between abdominal and subcutaneous fat differ from each other.

The metabolic changes that occur during the early post-partum period in dairy cows can indeed lead to an imbalance in energy utilization, resulting in the production of excessive ketone bodies. This can have detrimental effects on the cow's health and milk production, leading to economic losses for dairy producers. The release of non-esterified fatty acids into the blood due to increased lipolysis is a key factor in the development of ketosis. Abdominal adiposity is a key factor on these outcomes in modern dairy cows. The redirection of energy and glucose towards lactose synthesis and milk yield leaves a deficit of gluconeogenic precursors, leading to the conversion of acetyl-CoA into ketone bodies instead of entering the Krebs cycle. These ketone bodies, including acetone, acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate, accumulate in the blood and can be detected in various bodily fluids, such as urine, blood and milk, allowing for diagnostic testing. Prevention is indeed crucial in managing ketosis in dairy cattle. Supplementation of propylene glycol in the diet or the use of monensin, either in the diet or in the form of a slow-release bolus, can help prevent the occurrence of ketosis. However, avoiding high body condition (subcutaneous fat) and excessive abdominal adiposity during the dry period and parturition plus an adequate cow comfort are fundamental tasks to avoid ketosis and related disorders. These interventions aim to provide additional energy sources or enhance the cow's ability to utilize energy efficiently, thus reducing the reliance on excessive lipolysis and ketone body production.

BACKGROUND: Reliable typing of amyloid is essential. Amyloid extraction from tissue enables immunochemical typing of the precursor protein using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of a panel of ELISAs for typing the four main types (AA, ATTR, AL-kappa and AL-lambda amyloid). METHODS: From 1996 to 2023 subcutaneous abdominal fat tissue aspirates were obtained from 1339 amyloidosis patients and 868 controls. Amyloid was visually graded 0-4+ in Congo red-stained smears. Amyloid extracted from tissue by Guanidine was typed using a panel comprising four ELISAs. RESULTS: All amyloid protein concentrations in extracts correlated with amyloid grade in smears. Typing sensitivity was low (23.3%) in samples with grade 1+/2+ amyloid. Overall typing sensitivity of the panel was 81.6% for all easily visible amyloid (grade 3+/4+): high for AA (98.8%) and ATTR (96.8%) and fair for AL-kappa (66.7%) and AL-lambda (75.9). Overall typing specificity was 98.0% and the overall positive predictive value was 98.0%. CONCLUSIONS: We describe a highly specific ELISA panel for routine typing of the main amyloid types in fat tissue. Until more sensitive typing techniques will become generally available, typing easily visible amyloid in fat tissue using this ELISA panel is reliable, affordable and straightforward.

Low or insufficient testosterone levels caused by caponization promote fat deposition in animals. However, the molecular mechanism of fat deposition in caponized animals remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the metabolomics and transcriptomic profiles of adipose tissues and study the effect of testosterone and leptin on the proliferation of adipocytes. We observed a significant enlargement in the areas of adipocytes in the abdominal fat tissues in capon, as well as increased luciferase activity of the serum leptin and a sharp decrease in the serum testosterone in caponized gander. Metabolomics and transcriptomic results revealed differentially expressed genes and differentially expressed metabolites with enhanced PARR signal pathway. The mRNA levels of peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor γ, fatty acid synthase, and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 in goose primary pre-adipocytes were significantly upregulated with high leptin treatment and decreased significantly with increasing testosterone dose. Hence, reduced testosterone and increased leptin levels after caponization possibly promoted adipocytes proliferation and abdominal fat deposition by altering the expression of PPAR pathway related genes in caponized ganders. This study provides a new direction for the mechanism through which testosterone regulates the biological function of leptin and fat deposition in male animals.

Excessive abdominal fat deposition negatively impacts poultry meat production and carcass yield. Identification of novel adipogenesis regulators may help improve production performance declines caused by excessive fat deposition. NUMB Endocytic Adaptor Protein (NUMB) typically functions as a cell fate determinant and plays a significant role in cell development and various diseases. Here, we found that NUMB is abundantly expressed in chicken abdominal fat depots and is induced in cultured adipocytes following adipogenic treatment. The gain- and loss-of-function experiments demonstrated that NUMB promotes the proliferation and G1/S transition of chicken adipocytes, enhances adipocyte differentiation, and increases the expression of PPARγ1 transcript. Through mRNA-seq analysis and molecular experiments, we further confirmed that NUMB inhibits the transcriptional activation of the NOTCH1 pathway and the expression of the downstream transcription factor HES1 by inducing NOTCH1 degradation. Nevertheless, the inhibition of the NOTCH1/HES1 axis alone cannot fully explain NUMB's role in adipogenesis, as NUMB also regulates the expression of multiple adipogenic transcription factors such as E2F1, EGR2, and NR4A3. Our data suggest that NUMB is a potent activator of adipogenesis and enhances our understanding of its regulatory mechanisms in chicken abdominal fat deposition.

CONTEXT: Studies in heterogenous groups of people with respect to sex, body mass index (BMI), and glycemic status (normoglycemia, impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes), indicate no relationship between liver fat accumulation and pancreatic insulin secretion. OBJECTIVE: To better understand the association of liver fat with insulin secretion. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 61 men with abdominal obesity who had high liver fat (HLF, ≥5.6% by magnetic resonance spectroscopy, n=28) or low liver fat (LLF, n=33), but were balanced on BMI, total body fat, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and pancreatic fat. A frequently sampled 5-hour oral glucose tolerance test with 11 samples, in conjunction with mathematical modeling, was used to compute indices of insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion (oral minimal model). RESULTS: Compared to subjects with LLF, those with HLF had significantly greater fasting glucose, insulin, C-peptide, and triglyceride; lower high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol; but similar glycated hemoglobin. Areas under the 5-hour curve for glucose, insulin, and C-peptide were greater in the HLF group than the LLF group (by ∼10%, ∼38%, and ∼28%, respectively); fasting and total postprandial insulin secretion rates were ∼37% and ∼50% greater, respectively (all P<0.05); whereas the insulinogenic index was not different. HLF subjects had lower whole-body and hepatic insulin sensitivity, disposition index, and total insulin clearance than LLF subjects (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Accumulation of liver fat is associated with increased insulin secretion independently of total adiposity, abdominal fat distribution, and pancreatic fat. Thereby, hyperinsulinemia in fatty liver disease is partly because of insulin hypersecretion and partly because of impaired insulin clearance.

Purpose: The development of multiple system diseases is increased by obesity. However, the connection between obesity and developmental disabilities (DDs) in children is unclear. As an obesity index, the weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) assessed fat distribution and muscle mass. In this study, we examined the correlation between WWI and DDs among children 6 to 17 years of age. Methods: This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database (NHANES) covering 2003 to 2018, which included the data of 17,899 participants between 6 and 17 years of age. Data regarding their waist circumference, weight, and DDs were collected via physical examinations and questionnaire, respectively. A person's WWI is calculated by dividing their waist circumference by their weight squared. The correlation between WWI and DDs was studied using weighted multiple logistic regression models. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted utilizing a generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting. Results: After adjusting for all covariates, WWI was positively related to DDs in children ages 6-17. Based on the sensitivity analysis, the correlation between the WWI and prevalence of DDs remained consistent across subgroups. Additionally, there was a J-shaped correlation between the WWI and the prevalence of DDs in children ages 6 through 11. Conclusion: Children 6-17 years of age with a high WWI were at greater risk for DDs; however, the causal relationships and potential mechanisms require further exploration.

Objective: Most polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients have metabolic abnormalities in which insulin resistance (IR) plays a pivotal role. Cinnamon is a herbal medicine with insulinotropic properties. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of cinnamon on ovarian volume, androgenic profile, and metabolic and anthropometric parameters in women with PCOS. Materials and Methods: A single-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was carried out on 39 overweight / obese women with PCOS. For six months, subjects in the cinnamon (500 mg) (n=19) and placebo (n=20) groups were given three capsules daily. Before and after the intervention, the variables were assessed. The data was analyzed using the GraphPad Prism software. Results: After the intervention, the two intervention and control groups had significant differences in abdominal subcutaneous fat and ovarian volume, but they did not differ significantly in terms of body mass index (BMI). Also, after the intervention, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of lipid profile and the concentration of androgenic biomarkers of insulin resistance. Conclusion: Cinnamon supplementation improves ovarian volume and subcutaneous abdominal fat but has no effect on anthropometric parameters, lipid profile, insulin resistance, or androgen hormones.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the utility of CT-based abdominal fat measures for predicting the risk of death and cardiometabolic disease in an asymptomatic adult screening population. METHODS: Fully automated AI tools quantifying abdominal adipose tissue (L3 level visceral [VAT] and subcutaneous [SAT] fat area, visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratio [VSR], VAT attenuation), muscle attenuation (L3 level), and liver attenuation were applied to non-contrast CT scans in asymptomatic adults undergoing CT colonography (CTC). Longitudinal follow-up documented subsequent deaths, cardiovascular events, and diabetes. ROC and time-to-event analyses were performed to generate AUCs and hazard ratios (HR) binned by octile. RESULTS: A total of 9223 adults (mean age, 57 years; 4071:5152 M:F) underwent screening CTC from April 2004 to December 2016. 549 patients died on follow-up (median, nine years). Fat measures outperformed BMI for predicting mortality risk-5-year AUCs for muscle attenuation, VSR, and BMI were 0.721, 0.661, and 0.499, respectively. Higher visceral, muscle, and liver fat were associated with increased mortality risk-VSR > 1.53, HR = 3.1; muscle attenuation < 15 HU, HR = 5.4; liver attenuation < 45 HU, HR = 2.3. Higher VAT area and VSR were associated with increased cardiovascular event and diabetes risk-VSR > 1.59, HR = 2.6 for cardiovascular event; VAT area > 291 cm2, HR = 6.3 for diabetes (p < 0.001). A U-shaped association was observed for SAT with a higher risk of death for very low and very high SAT. CONCLUSION: Fully automated CT-based measures of abdominal fat are predictive of mortality and cardiometabolic disease risk in asymptomatic adults and uncover trends that are not reflected in anthropomorphic measures. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Fully automated CT-based measures of abdominal fat soundly outperform anthropometric measures for mortality and cardiometabolic risk prediction in asymptomatic patients. KEY POINTS: Abdominal fat depots associated with metabolic dysregulation and cardiovascular disease can be derived from abdominal CT. Fully automated AI body composition tools can measure factors associated with increased mortality and cardiometabolic risk. CT-based abdominal fat measures uncover trends in mortality and cardiometabolic risk not captured by BMI in asymptomatic outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the primary cause of mortality globally. The prevalence of obesity is rising worldwide; there seems to be a significant positive association between obesity and CVDs. The distribution of fat in the abdominal area in the form of visceral (VAT) or subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) affects the risk of CVDs. The aim of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of the available literature regarding the association between the VAT-to-SAT ratio and CVDs. METHODS: A comprehensive search strategy was used to retrieve all human observational studies indexed in PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases/search engines (from Jan 2000 up to Oct 2023). The VAT-to-SAT or SAT-to-VAT ratio was an independent variable and various cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and heart failure, were considered as outcomes of interest. RESULTS: Out of 1173 initial studies, 910 papers were screened. Based on the inclusion criteria, 883 papers were excluded. Finally, 27 papers (18 cross-sectional and 9 cohort studies) published between 2010 and 2023 which met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of abdominal fat seems to be associated with the risk of CVDs; the majority of the evidence suggests that a higher abdominal VAT-to-SAT ratio is associated with the development of CVDs. Therefore, this ratio can be used as a prognostic indicator for CVDs. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

INTRODUCTION: Congo red staining of fat pad fine needle aspiration specimens is a method utilized for evaluation of amyloid deposition. However, these specimens can pose diagnostic challenges for cytopathologists. As part of ongoing internal quality improvement measures, the objective of this study was to evaluate the intradepartmental interobserver agreement of these specimens and to identify factors that affect the variability of the interpretations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were 7 participants, which included 3 trainees, 3 cytopathologists, and 1 cytotechnologist. Each participant reviewed 50 Congo red stained fat pad fine needle aspiration slides. The interpretations were categorized into 3 groups: negative, indeterminate/suspicious, and positive. The participants also noted any interpretation challenges they encountered for each case. RESULTS: There was only slight interobserver agreement among all participants (κ = 0.133). Stratified by participant group, the interobserver agreement among the trainees was slight bordering on poor (κ = 0.028) and among cytopathologists was fair (κ = 0.249). The highest agreement between 2 observers was between 2 cytopathologists and the level of agreement was moderate bordering on fair (κ = 0.426). There were only 3 cases (6.0%) with full agreement among observers, while in 25 cases (50.0%), there were 2 category differences in interpretations. The primary diagnostic challenge reported by participants was when weak or focal birefringence was encountered as well as cases complicated by poor stain quality and overstaining. CONCLUSIONS: We found only slight interobserver agreement among all study participants. A major area of challenge was cases with weak birefringence resulting in high variance of interpretation among participants.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (A-CCI) with body composition and overall survival in patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC). RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In this cohort study, patients (≥ 18 years old) with CRC were followed for 36 months. Computed tomography images of the third lumbar were analyzed to determine body composition, including skeletal muscle area (SMA), skeletal muscle index (SMI), skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). Phenotypes based on comorbidity burden assessed by A-CCI and body composition parameters were established. RESULTS: A total of 436 participants were included, 50% male, with a mean age of 61 ± 13.2 years. Approximately half of the patients (50.4%) had no comorbidity, and the A-CCI median score was 4 (interquartile range: 3-6). A higher A-CCI score was a risk factor for 36-month mortality (HR = 3.59, 95% CI = 2.17-5.95). Low SMA and low SMD were associated with a higher A-CCI. All abnormal phenotypes (high A-CCI and low SMA; high A-CCI and low SMD; high A-CCI and high VAT) were independently associated with higher 36-month mortality hazard (adjusted HR 5.12, 95% CI 2.73-9.57; adjusted HR 4.58, 95% CI 2.37-8.85; and adjusted HR 2.36, 95% CI 1.07-5.22, respectively). CONCLUSION: The coexistence of comorbidity burden and abnormal body composition phenotypes, such as alterations in muscle or fat compartments, may pose an additional risk of mortality in patients newly diagnosed with CRC. Early assessment and management of these phenotypes could be crucial in optimizing outcomes in such patients.

In light of ongoing research elucidating the intricacies of obesity and metabolic syndrome, the role of abdominal fat (especially visceral fat) has been particularly prominent. Studies have revealed that visceral adipose tissue can accelerate the development of metabolic syndrome by releasing various bioactive compounds and hormones, such as lipocalin, leptin and interleukin. A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 167 patients with obesity. Among them, 105 patients who satisfied predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. The parameters evaluated included total abdominal fat area (TAFA), laboratory indicators and anthropometric measurements. Weight reduction was quantified through percent total weight loss (%TWL) and percent excess weight loss (%EWL) postoperatively. Binary logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were employed to identify predictors of weight loss. Binary logistic regression analysis emphasized that total abdominal fat area was an independent predictor of %EWL ≥75% (p < 0.001). Total abdominal fat area (p = 0.033) and BMI (p = 0.003) were independent predictors of %TWL ≥30%. In our cohort, %TWL ≥30% at 1 year after surgery was closely related to the abdominal fat area and BMI. Based on these results, we formulated a novel model based on these factors, exhibiting superior predictive value for excellent weight loss.

Abdominal fat, which in the past was often regarded as waste and discarded, has in recent years been used as a fat source to produce meat by-products. Yellow abdominal fat has higher economic value. Therefore, improving the color of abdominal fat plays an important role in improving the appearance of meat products. This study aimed to identify the contributors and the regulatory network involved in the formation of yellow and white color in abdominal fat. We found that four xanthophyll compounds were significantly different in yellow and white abdominal fat chicken, including zeaxanthin, lutein, canthaxanthin, and ß-cryptoxanthin. There were 551 different and 8 common metabolites significantly correlated with these 4 xanthophyll compounds. Similarly, a total of 54 common genes were identified in 4 common related pathways (Complement and coagulation cascades, Metabolic pathways, PPAR signaling pathway, Carbon metabolism) of the 8 common metabolites. The high expression of HAAO in the yellow abdominal fat group leads to the degradation of tryptophan and its intermediate 5-hydroxyindole, and subsequently to the formation of the four xanthophyll compounds. This process is also regulated by tyrosine, kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (KMO), homogentisate 1, 2-dioxygenase (HGD), etc. Together, these findings show the effect of tryptophan on abdominal fat color, as well as a negative regulatory effect of HAAO and 5-hydroxyindole on the production of xanthophyll compounds involved in abdominal fat coloration.

1. The liver of chickens is a dominant lipid biosynthetic tissue and plays a vital role in fat deposition, particularly in the abdomen. To determine the molecular mechanisms involved in its lipid metabolism, the livers of chickens with high (H) or low (L) abdominal fat content were sampled and sequencing on long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), messenger RNA (mRNA) and small RNA (microRNA) was performed.2. In total, 351 expressed protein-coding genes for long non-coding RNA (DEL; 201 upregulated and 150 downregulated), 400 differentially expressed genes (DEG; 223 upregulated and 177 downregulated) and 10 differentially expressed miRNA (DEM; four upregulated and six downregulated) were identified between the two groups. Multiple potential signalling pathways related to lipogenesis and lipid metabolism were identified via pathway enrichment analysis. In addition, 173 lncRNA - miRNA - mRNA interaction regulatory networks were identified, including 30 lncRNA, 27 mRNA and seven miRNA.3. These networks may help regulate lipid metabolism and fat deposition. Five promising candidate genes and two lncRNA may play important roles in the regulation of adipogenesis and lipid metabolism in chickens.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between inflammatory markers and abdominal fat assessed by ultrasound in prepubertal children with and without excess weight. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 241 prepubertal children, 156 with obesity, 37 with overweight, and 48 with normal weight, aged five to ten years, who were followed at a research unit on Childhood Obesity from a teaching hospital belonging to a public health system. The concentration of interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α and C-reactive protein were assessed and regression analyses, considering outcome variables such as abdominal wall and intra-abdominal fat thickness measured by ultrasound, were performed. RESULTS: The findings highlighted an association between abdominal fat and inflammatory markers, even in children at this young age group. Subcutaneous fat showed a stronger association with inflammatory biomarkers compared to intra-abdominal fat when performing logistic regression, with a positive association between tumor necrosis factor-α and abdominal wall thickness equal to or greater than the 75th percentile in adjusted logistic regression (OR: 18.12; CI 95 %: 1.57: 209.55). CONCLUSIONS: Abdominal wall fat, in contrast to what is often observed in adults, appears to have a greater impact on chronic inflammation related to excessive weight in very young children.
